Getting a Dubai tourist SIM is a pretty straightforward process. However, there are multiple mobile operators in the UAE, so it gets rather confusing for tourists to decide which mobile network SIM they should go for based on the packages offered.

However, there’s no need to worry, as we have simplified everything for you! Below, you will find a list of mobile operators in the UAE with information about purchasing their SIM and which operator is the most suitable for you.

Du is a mobile operator in UAE, launched in 2007. If you want to get a Du SIM card, you can get one on arrival at the airport or from the Du store.

The upside of getting a Du tourist SIM from the immigration counters at the Dubai airport is that you get it for free with 1GB of local data as a welcome bonus. As for the activation, you don’t need to go through extensive steps as the SIM is already activated using your passport information.

To start using the du SIM, you simply have to insert it into your mobile and verify your date of birth via a verification text. Once the verification is complete, you will get 1GB of local data for free, valid for 24 hours .

You can also purchase a Du SIM card from its franchise store across the city. If you just buy the SIM without any package, it will cost around AED 10; however, if you activate a bundle package (starting from AED 49), you’ll get the SIM for free. You’ll just need your passport to get started.

Etisalat is the 18th largest mobile operator in the world and operates in more than 16 countries. Therefore, we can say that it is one of the best SIM cards for Dubai.

You can get an Etisalat SIM from the Dubai airport when you land. And while it does not offer free data, it has plenty of packages.

• If you’re only here for less than a day and you’re a light internet user – you can grab a FREE 1GB/24 hr validity Etislat eSim – yup, the same deal as Du, but it doesn’t seem to be openly advertised.
• The cheapest paid Visitor Line gives you 2GB of data + 30 flexi minutes, valid for 28 days for AED 49 ($13.30 USD).
• Visitor Line + gives you 4GB of data + 30 flexi minutes valid for 28 days for AED 79 ($21.50 USD)
• Visitor Line Premium gives you 8GB of data + 120 flexi minutes valid for 28 days for AED 125 ($34 USD)
• If you’re a heavy online user and caller, go with Visitor Line Premium + 22.5GB of data + 525 flexi minutes valid for 28 days for AED 200 ($54.50 USD), or
• Unlimited 7 Days – includes 100 flexi minutes for 200 AED ($54.50 USD)

Its important to note that Visitor Line packages are valid until your visa; therefore, if you plan on staying in Dubai for good, you can switch to Etisalat’s other pre-paid and post-paid packages.

Virgin Mobile is a newer mobile operator in UAE by the Virgin Mobile brand (though it is a fully owned subsidiary of Du and uses the same network). It offers special tourist SIM cards with different packages to people visiting Dubai for business or vacations.

You can get the SIM from the airport as soon as you land; however, the tourist SIM is for one-time use. This means you can use it for as long as your package lasts and won’t be able to renew it.

Virgin Mobile offers four packages for its Dubai tourist SIM:

• A 7-day package costs AED 150 with 21GB of data (capped at 3GB per day)
• A 10-day package costs AED 200 with 40GB of data (capped at 4GB per day)
• A 7-day package costs AED 200 with unlimited data
• A 15-day package costs AED 300 with unlimited data
• A 30-day package costs AED 500 with unlimited data

SIMs Sold by Third-Party Companies

If you see online tour operators selling you a SIM card, it will be based on services provided by one of the above three networks.

All should have reliable coverage in metropolitan areas. Beyond that, in the mountains and the desert, it’s time to switch off and get yourself an offline map, as the network will be patchy or non-existent no matter whose network you use (they are all ultimately government-owned and share much of their infrastructure).

As international travellers, we’ve become big fans of using Airalo eSIMs whenever possible. The eSIM they sell for the UAE is marketed as “ Burj Mobile ” (digging beneath the cover, we believe it runs on the Etisalat network, so you shouldn’t encounter any connectivity issues)

There are currently six different Burj Mobile packages

• 1GB valid for 7 Days for $4.50 USD (AED 16.53 )
• 2GB Valid for 15 days for $7.00 USD (AED 25.71)
• 3GB valid for 30 days for $9.50USD (AED 34.90)
• 5GB valid for 30 days for $13.00 USD (AED 47.74)
• 10GB valid for 30 days $21.00 USD (AED 77.12)
• 20GB valid for 30 days $35.00 USD (AED 128.53)

These have dramatically reduced in price since they were first released.

NB these are all for data only; if you think you’ll need to make phone calls too, you’re better waiting until arrival and getting a local Dubai SIM with a phone number attached!

Using Airalo is super easy. Once you purchase online, you’ll need to press activate and change any existing eSIMs on your phone to the new eSIM. The clock starts ticking as soon as you land and connect to the UAE network. (Note that in the UAE’s infinite wisdom when it comes to blocking tech, you may not be able to reach the Airalo site from the UAE, so do activate before you arrive ready).

If you are travelling more widely around the Middle East and just popping into Dubai briefly, you may also want to look at Airalo’s Middle East option, Menalink , with packages as follows:

• 1GB valid for 7 Days for $15 USD
• 2GB valid for 15 days for $28 USD
• 3GB valid for 30 days for $39 USD

Popular online tour provider Get Your Guide partners with KitMyTrip to deliver several incredible value tourist bundles to consider – they take all the guesswork of how to sign up for a network; you really have to decide how data-hungry you are!

You’ll need to find their kiosks in arrivals at DXB Terminals 1 and 3 to get your data set up ( NB not for arrivals in DXB Terminal 2, DWC airport or AUH airport in Abu Dhabi ).

• Their SIM card-only package lets you choose from 2GB, 4GB, 8GB, 22.5GB and unlimited over 7 or 14 days – starting from $15 USD – check it out here
• Another option they offer is to combine your SIM with a NOL card for public transport and entry to IMG Worlds of Adventure Theme Park – check it out here
• Pocket Wifi Rental – If you’ve got multiple devices, this one could be your solution; rent a mobile hotspot and return it after your trip – suitable for 4 to 10 days, or add extra days on – check it out here

Do read the fine print if pre-packaged SIM bundles will work for you, only 1 per passport and users must be over 18, so you can’t hand one out to each of the kids. In this instance, families should consider pocket wifi options.

The free tourist SIM is a free SIM card Du Telecommunications offers to people visiting Dubai. This SIM card can be picked up from the immigration counter at the Dubai airport and is activated using your passport details. It contains 1GB of free local data valid for 24 hours. Once the time is over, you can recharge your SIM with the various tourist packages offered by Du.

We recommend getting a SIM card on arrival in Dubai from the airport. The reason? It’s simple, it’s easy, and it’s fast. Plus, multiple SIM card sellers at the airport make buying it pretty straightforward. You have to provide your passport details, go through the various packages, and get the SIM. On the other hand, you can also pre-order your SIM card. You have to contact the mobile operator, select a package, and provide your home address in your country. The mobile operator will then mail the SIM card to your address. However, we won’t recommend this option, as it takes too long, plus you never know when you will receive the SIM via mail. Also, what if it gets lost on the way? And this method isn’t suitable if you make a sudden plan to visit Dubai. eSIM’s, on the other hand, where you don’t need a physical SIM card to be delivered, could be your easiest option these days. Simply activate it as soon as you land and you’re instantly connected, no need to queue at a counter when you get to DXB.

Based on the offers and packages by Du, Etisalat, and Virgin Mobile, the best SIM card for Dubai is Du. Because for starters, it offers a free tourist SIM to the visitors. You can quickly insert it into your mobile and get connected almost instantly. Etisalat is also a good option, but it is a bit expensive, and its Visitors Line’s validity depends on your visa expiration. However, it is a good option if you’re in Dubai for limited days. Those wanting convenience and with a compatible device should try the Airalo eSIM – it’s not the cheapest option but super easy for those who only need a little bit of data.

As mentioned earlier, getting a tourist SIM in Dubai is easy. You can either get it from the airport or the mobile network provider’s store. The representative will ask for your passport, take its copy, and register the SIM card in your name. Getting a Dubai tourist SIM card is not a big deal. It is pretty simple if you know how to go about the process.

What is the Visitor Line and who can benefit from it?

The Visitor Line is a new prepaid pack from Etisalat, exclusively designed for the visitors travelling to the UAE. Whether you are on a business trip, a tourist, a job seeker or just visiting family, the Visitor Line gets you connected immediately with a rich pack selection of your choice. The best thing to do is to use a local SIM Card , in this way you can use your smartphone, maps, call home and even make calls in the UAE (to reserve restaurants, tours or just in case of emergencies, especially if you plan to rent a car) without spending a fortune: with a fixed and affordable price you can use the internet (and social networks) and call without risk and without problems.

Dubai SIM Card for Tourists: All You Need to Know

Dubai and the UAE have an excellent telecommunications network, although tariff plans for smartphones are generally quite expensive. Furthermore, many foreign SIM cards do not work here, or the costs of calls and the internet can be exorbitant.

For this reason, most tourists arriving in Dubai choose to buy a UAE SIM Card, which allows significant savings , even over 90% compared to international roaming rates .

At the airport there are desks that sell Dubai SIM Cards for Tourists, they are specifically designed for travelers who stay for a maximum of 30 days (which can be easily extended) and want to use the internet and call without worries.

Dubai SIM Card: Which mobile operator to choose?

In the UAE there are only two mobile internet operators: Du and Etisalat . It’s practically a monopoly, so the rates are pretty high. However, the coverage is quite good, both operators offer excellent coverage of all major cities and roads.

The quality of the internet connection is very good: 4G high-speed connection is available in most of the UAE, 5G is also available in some areas of Dubai and Abu Dhabi.

Etisalat offers better coverage in the most remote areas of the country, Du is more popular with tourists, due to better rates and a better service reputation.

At Dubai International Airport you will also find another mobile operator: Virgin Mobile , which operates on the Du network, but which I have not yet had the opportunity to try. However, their prices did not seem so advantageous to me.

The difference between Etisalat and Du is mainly the price and how many GB and minutes they offer. So, let’s see what is the most advantageous offer at the moment for a Dubai SIM Card for Tourists.

Dubai SIM Card Prices for Tourists

The SIM Cards for Tourists that you can buy at Dubai Airport (and which work in all UAE) usually offer enough GB and minutes at a much more affordable price than that of a regular SIM Card.

The two companies, Du and Etisalat , have similar prices and reliable service, because they are both partially owned by the government.

ETISALAT Dubai SIM Card Prices for Tourists

Virgin 7 Days Tourist Plan:

Virgin UAE 10 days tourist plan is offering 40GB data (4GB per Day), 30 local minutes and SMS, and 20 international calling minutes and SMS. While buying a SIM card you can choose any of them to offer as your visa validity. The price of this package is 200 AED Including 5% VAT per 10 days.

Virgin 15 Days Tourist Plan:

This package is also called a half-monthly Virgin tourist SIM card. Virgin is also offering a 75GB unlimited data offer in which customers can use daily 5GB data including 30 local calling minutes and SMS and 20 international calling minutes and SMS. If you are coming to UAE for 30 days, you can reactivate this package again after 15 days. the price of 15 days tourist SIM card is 300 AED per 15 days including 5% VAT.

Virgin SIM card is some costly than other SIM cards. Because this network provides an international call plan including free data and local calls so, it costs the same price as other networks if you also get international call packages. If the customers need unlimited internet data, they can activate the booster data plan whose price is 100 AED. Comparison of Etisalat, DU, and Virgin SIM Card

If we compare Etisalat vs DU tourist SIM cards then both networks are equal in prices and calling minutes. It is difficult to know which Etisalat and DU which is the best network. If we compare DU vs Virgin and Etisalat vs Virgin then Virgin can be a good network. Buying a Sim Card at Abu Dhabi Airport in 2024

Are you planning your trip to the United Arabic Emirates and flying to Abu Dhabi and wondering what is the best way to stay connected? Get yourself an eSIM card or buy a prepaid sim card at Abu Dhabi International Airport. How?

This is a complete guide for buying a sim card for traveling to the UAE on arrival at Abu Dhabi International Airport. It is mostly the cheapest way to get a data connection on your phone. It avoids high roaming costs and you don't need to struggle with slow overseas data roaming plans.

My recommendation

Traveltomtom recommends buying a Virgin Mobile sim card at Abu Dhabi Airport if you use a lot of data, if you just need a couple GB's Etisalat or DU will both do the job.

But let me tell you that eSIM cards for Dubai that you order on the internet are even cheaper. A Nomad eSIM card with 10 GB data only costs $22 USD. A prepaid sim card at Abu Dhabi Airport with 10 GB data cost $34 USD.

Prices for tourist sim cards at Abu Dhabi Airport are the same as if you buy a prepaid sim card in one of the Etisalat or Du retail stores in the malls in Abu Dhabi.

Therefore Traveltomtom recommends buying a sim card at the airport to get instantly connected for your trip to Abu Dhabi.

Arrival at Abu Dhabi International Airport - AUH

Airport arrival at Abu Dhabi International Airport (AUH) are much more laid-back compared to its crazy busy neighboring airport Dubai (DXB). AUH Airport is much smaller and navigating through the airport is not that overwhelming.

Also the waiting lines at Abu Dhabi Airport are not that long in general. Depending on the situation I sometimes use Abu Dhabi Airport for traveling to Dubai. A Taxi from Abu Dhabi Airport to Dubai costs about $100 USD.

After you left the plane you will be directed to immigration. If you have a new passport from one of the eligible countries you can use the e-gates, which makes entering the UAE even faster. The baggage reclaim hall is rather small with low ceilings and can be a little busy if many flights arrive at the same time, but in general it is easy going. 

Already at the luggage belts you can buy a prepaid sim card for the UAE, more about that later. After picking up your luggage you walk past the duty free into the arrival hall which is pretty small as well. On your left side there is a cafe and a convenience store and on your right side there are more sim card shops as well as the car rental desks.

Where to buy a sim card at Abu Dhabi Airport

As I just mentioned there are already sim card sellers at the luggage belt. You can find a desk of Etisalat as well as a desk of Virgin Mobile between luggage belt 3 and 4. The guys from Etisalat are pretty annoying hassling every passenger walking past to buy an Etisalat sim card. Even when they are already helping other costumers.

If you are intended to buy a Virgin Mobile prepaid sim card then this is your only chance, because if you walk through the customs baggage check and get to the arrival hall you can't go back into the luggage claim area.

In the arrival hall there are two more mobile internet operator stores: Du and another Etisalat which also sell prepaid sim cards for the UAE for tourists.

Prices UAE prepaid sim cards at Abu Dhabi

Prepaid sim card prices and packages constantly change. Traveltomtom does everything in its power to keep information as up to date as possible. The below prices are updated in August 2024. Your input is appreciated if you have any updated info about buying a sim card in Abu Dhabi.

As of August 2024: 1 AED = $0.27 USD and $1 USD = 3.67 AED.

• 40* GB data + 30 minutes + 20 international minutes for 7 days = 200 AED
• 75* GB data + 30 minutes + 20 international minutes for 7 days = 300 AED

Etisalat Luggage Belt 3-4

At Etisalat they say that you get a free UAE sim card if you buy a package, but that is with every operator the same, so don't get too excited. Etisalat offfers the following prepaid sim cards deals valid for 28 days:

• 2 GB data + 30 Flexi minutes = 49 AED - $13.3 USD
• 4 GB data + 30 Flexi minutes = 79 AED
• 8 GB data + 120 Flexi minutes = 125 AED
• 22.5 GB data + 525 Flexi minutes = 200 AED 

They also have a prepaid sim card deal with unlimited data in the UAE for 10 days:

• Unlimited data + 100 Flexi minutes for 10 days = 319 AED

There is also an Etisalat store in the arrival hall where they sell the exact same prepaid sim cards for tourists as at the luggage belts.

DU Arrival Hall

A DU prepaid sim card is also free when buying one of the following data plans valid for 28 days: 

• 2 GB data + 30 Flexi minutes = 49 AED
• 6 GB data + 30 Flexi minutes = 99 AED - $27 USD
• 10 GB data + 30 Flexi minutes = 139 AED
• 20 GB data + 30 Flexi minutes = 189 AED

DU also has a prepaid sim card deal with unlimited data in the UAE for 10 days:

• Unlimited data for 10 days = 299 AED - $81 USD

Another reminder that if you want to buy a prepaid sim card in Abu Dhabi city center you will find the exact same packages and prepaid sim card deals at the official retail stores in the malls as at the airport.

Best UAE sim card at Abu Dhabi Airport

As you can see in the above comparison of the prepaid sim card deals in Abu Dhabi the cheapest sim card in Abu Dhabi cost 49 AED, which is $13 USD and you get 2 GB data. Both, Etisalat and DU offer this exact same UAE prepaid sim card deal. 

This is a simple but great deal if you are just looking to stay connected on your trip to Abu Dhabi and occasionally use social media apps. But if you are a heavy data user Virgin Mobile turns out to be much cheaper as they give you much more GB's for the same price.

To find the best prepaid sim card for Abu Dhabi I also compared the 4G/5G network coverage in UAE of Etisalat and DU and came to the conclusion that although Etisalat has the better 5G network, for tourists there is not much difference as every tourist spot in the UAE is covered with an excellent 5G signal on both networks.
