7 continents in 4 months: Holland America Line reveals 2026 world cruise

Portrait of Nathan Diller

If visiting all seven continents is on your travel bucket list, a new cruise from Holland America Line will make it easy for you.

The cruise line’s 2026 Grand World Voyage will traverse the globe over 132 days, stopping at 47 ports in 39 countries. Passengers just have to get themselves to Fort Lauderdale, Florida, the trip’s round-trip departure point.

“We asked thousands of past guests and travel advisors for their opinions about the perfect Grand World Voyage, so this may be one of our most thoroughly researched routes ever for a world cruise,” Holland America’s president, Gus Antorcha, said when announcing the itinerary to guests currently sailing on the line’s 2024 Grand World Voyage on Monday, according to a news release. “This itinerary includes destinations we know guests love, packed with memorable moments and overnight stays."

When is the 2026 Grand World Voyage?

The cruise will set sail on Jan. 4, 2026, on the line’s 1,432-guest Volendam ship which launched in 1999.

Where will the cruise sail?

Antorcha said the cruise will visit fewer ports than previous Grand World Voyages “to allow more time to explore the destinations we visit and to create a voyage that does not feel rushed.”

Passengers will head down South America’s east coast before making their way to Antarctica. There, they will have a four-day Antarctic Experience (though guests won’t disembark due to the ship’s size ).

The ship will then head to destinations like the South Pacific and Australia, with time to explore the Great Barrier Reef. The remainder of the voyage includes Singapore, the Maldives , the Mediterranean and northern Europe. The trip will wind down with a transatlantic crossing before one last stop in San Juan, Puerto Rico.

Passengers will stay overnight at nine ports, including Rio de Janeiro, Brazil; Sydney, Australia; Bali in Indonesia and Alexandria, Egypt. There will also be five late-night departures in Civitavecchia, Italy, Oslo, Norway, and San Juan, among others.

Other highlights include visits to Easter Island, Adamstown in the Pitcairn Islands, and Bordeaux, France.

What is a world cruise?: Here's what sets the months-long voyages apart

How much does the cruise cost?

Pricing info is not yet available, but an inside cabin on the line's 2025 Grand World Voyage currently starts at $24,999.

Travelers can call 1-800-522-3399 or contact their travel adviser to make a future cruise request for the 2026 itinerary and get priority booking confirmation before the cruise opens for sale to the public in May.

This 42-day Cruise Will Sail From Florida to Europe to the Middle East Next Year

Holland America's “42-day Ultimate Mediterranean & Atlantic Passage” will make 16 stops including Greece, Tel Aviv, Morocco, and more.

holland america world cruises

Tim Rue/Getty Images

Holland America Line will launch a 42-day cruise across the Atlantic Ocean and around Europe and the Middle East from Florida next year, inspired by a journey the cruise line took nearly 100 years ago.

The “42-day Ultimate Mediterranean & Atlantic Passage” cruise will sail from Fort Lauderdale on Nov. 9, 2024, and visit 16 different ports before heading back to Florida, according to the cruise company . The sailing is part of the company’s Legendary Voyages, which are longer cruises ranging from 25 to 59 days.

Travelers who board the company’s Volendam ship will first sail to the Azores before heading over to Tangier, Morocco, and on to Italy and Greece where they will have the opportunity to visit popular cities like Florence, Rome, and Athens. The cruise will then head down to Israel where guests can explore Tel Aviv and Jerusalem before making its way to Egypt and Tunisia.

On its way back to Florida, passengers will stop in Gibraltar, Spain, and Casablanca.

“Holland America Line was one of the first companies to feature cruise vacations that went beyond a transatlantic crossing, and today we’re continuing to innovate our itineraries by offering memorable voyages like this ultimate Mediterranean and Atlantic passage sailing,” Beth Bodensteiner, the chief commercial officer for Holland America Line, said in a statement. “Since introducing this new Legendary category of cruises that offer an in-depth focus on one region, they’ve been very popular. We’re excited to add a longer voyage that makes it easy to explore the Med in depth without a long-haul flight.”

Holland America said the cruise is inspired by a trip the company took in 1925, which departed from New York City on the Rotterdam IV and sailed to several of the same ports next year’s cruise will visit.

Last year, Holland America celebrated its 150th anniversary with a series of heritage cruises , including a special transatlantic cruise that recreated the company’s first sailing by crossing the Atlantic Ocean before the company was even incorporated.

The company is also planning an epic 133-day pole-to-pole Grand Voyage in 2025, which will sail as far south as Antarctica and as far north as the Arctic Circle off the coast of Norway.

The 5 best destinations you can visit on a Holland America ship

Gene Sloan

Of the seven big lines that account for the majority of cruises taken by North Americans, Holland America is the brand most known for far-flung, globe-circling itineraries.

You'll find Holland America ships in almost every corner of the world at some point during the year, operating itineraries that are unusual in their diversity of routes and specific port calls.

Still, the line's heaviest presence by far is in Europe, Alaska and the Caribbean. In a typical summer, the line will deploy around half of its vessels to Europe while sending the other half to Alaska. The two regions are often the line's entire focus for summers.

For more cruise guides, news and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

During the winter, the line will move at least half of these ships to the Caribbean, while also sending some on far-reaching voyages across the world to Asia, Australia and South America.

For the coming winter, seven of the line's 11 ships are scheduled to sail in the Caribbean, and there will be at least one ship each in Asia, Australia and South America. There also will be one ship operating an epic, around-the-world voyage — a long tradition at the line.

In all, Holland America ships sail to 98 countries, hitting all seven continents. They visit more than 470 different ports and cruise destinations. These are much larger numbers than found with such rival lines as Celebrity Cruises . The latter boasts voyages to around 300 ports in 79 countries .

Among Holland America's itineraries, you'll find everything from one-night sampler cruises between Seattle and Vancouver, B.C., to 128-night around-the-world voyages that feature stops at dozens of countries. That's a much broader range than most other big lines, including Celebrity, Royal Caribbean , Norwegian Cruise Line and Carnival Cruise Line .

Whether you're looking for a quick getaway or an epic voyage, you can't go wrong with these five top Holland America cruise destinations.

Related: The 4 classes of Holland America ships, explained

holland america world cruises

Some of Holland America's most popular itineraries are in Europe, where the line has traditionally been a significant player. In a typical year, Holland America will deploy around half of its vessels to the region from spring until fall, making Europe one of its biggest focuses for more than half the year.

The itineraries that Holland America offers in Europe are wide-ranging, with a diverse set of routings in both the Mediterranean as well as across Northern Europe.

In the Mediterranean, sailings include everything from seven- to 28-night voyages that offer the chance to see such iconic destinations as Barcelona, Spain, and Rome, Florence and Naples, Italy, on a single cruise.

Some Holland America cruises in the Mediterranean also include visits to Istanbul and Kusadasi in Turkey (the latter a gateway to the famed ruins of Ephesus), and Haifa and Ashdod in Israel (for visits to Jerusalem and other iconic destinations in the country).

In Northern Europe, Holland America will take you to such well-known Baltic cities as Stockholm, Sweden; Tallinn, Estonia; Helsinki, Finland; and St. Petersburg, Russia, in a single sailing (note that Holland America's calls in St. Petersburg are on hold for now due to the war in Ukraine). There also are itineraries that will bring you to Iceland, Greenland and the Norwegian fjords.

Related: The ultimate guide to Holland America cabins and suites

Among the longest sailings Holland America offers in Europe is a 35-night "British Isles, Spitsbergen & Iceland Fjords Explore" trip that brings a complete circumnavigation of England and Scotland, several stops along the coast of Norway, and calls in both Iceland and the Norwegian-controlled Arctic island of Spitsbergen.

In Northern Europe, Holland America ships mostly sail out of Amsterdam and Rotterdam in the Netherlands (a nod to the company's Dutch heritage) and Copenhagen, Denmark.

In the Mediterranean, the line's hubs are Barcelona; Civitavecchia (the port for Rome) and Venice in Italy; and Piraeus (the port for Athens).

2. Caribbean and The Bahamas

holland america world cruises

You usually won't find a single Holland America ship in the Caribbean and the Bahamas over the summer, when the line turns its focus to sailings in Europe and Alaska. However, come winter, Holland America will reposition quite a few of its vessels to the Caribbean and Bahamas sailings.

For the coming winter, for instance, Holland America currently has seven of its 11 vessels scheduled to sail in the regions — including its two newest and biggest ships, the 2,660-passenger Rotterdam and the 2,650-passenger Nieuw Statendam.

Holland America offers a broad range of Caribbean and Bahamas itineraries from a single home port in the regions — Fort Lauderdale's Port Everglades .

If you're looking for something short, the line has you covered in the form of quick, three-night cruises out of Port Everglades to its private island in the Bahamas, Half Moon Cay. The line also offers four- and five-night voyages out of Port Everglades to the Bahamas and Key West, Florida. However, Holland America is best known for longer sailings in the Caribbean. These include lots of seven-night itineraries to the Eastern Caribbean, Western Caribbean and Southern Caribbean, but also a large number of even longer, 10- to 21-nights Caribbean voyages.

The latter trips offer the chance to see a broader mix of Caribbean islands than is typical on Caribbean sailings.

Related: The ultimate guide to Holland America's Mariner Society loyalty program

Among the most elaborate of the itineraries that Holland America offers out of Port Everglades, for instance, is a 21-day "Southern Caribbean Wayfarer/Seafarer" voyage that brings calls at the islands of St. Martin (specifically, to the Dutch side of the island known as St. Maarten), St. Lucia, Barbados, Martinique, St. Kitts, St. Thomas, Grand Turk, Hispaniola (for a visit to the Dominican Republic), Bonaire, Curacao, Aruba and Half Moon Cay in the Bahamas.

The voyage is actually a combination of two shorter, back-to-back sailings that are designed without repeating ports.

holland america world cruises

Holland America is particularly known for voyages to Alaska, where it dominates the market for cruises along with sister line Princess Cruises.

In recent years, Holland America has deployed as many as eight ships to Alaska in the summer — far more than most other lines. In the wake of a significant downsizing over the past two years , the line is cutting that number back a bit. However, it's still planning on deploying at least six vessels to Alaska in the coming summers — a huge number.

Holland America also operates its own wilderness lodges in Alaska, as well as tourist trains and buses. It uses the lodges, trains and buses to offer an extensive range of nine- to 14-night Alaska "cruisetours" that combine a cruise with land-based touring.

The Alaska cruise season is a short one, lasting roughly from May to September. For 2022, Holland America plans to deploy six ships to the Alaska market:

  • Eurodam : The 2,104-passenger vessel will operate seven-night voyages to Alaska round trip out of Seattle. It'll call at the Alaska towns of Sitka, Juneau and Ketchikan; Icy Strait Point, Alaska; and Victoria, British Columbia. It'll also visit Alaska's Glacier Bay National Park for glacier viewing.
  • Koningsdam : The 2,650-passenger ship will operate seven-night voyages to Alaska round trip out of Vancouver, B.C. It'll call at the Alaska towns of Skagway, Juneau and Ketchikan. It'll also visit Tracy Arm and Alaska's Glacier Bay National Park for glacier viewing.
  • Oosterdam. Like Eurodam, the 2,388-passenger ship will operate seven-night voyages to Alaska round trip out of Seattle. It'll call at the Alaska towns of Sitka, Juneau and Ketchikan; and Victoria, British Columbia. It'll also visit Alaska's Hubbard Glacier for glacier viewing.
  • Zuiderdam . Like Koningsdam, the 1,916-passenger ship will operate seven-night voyages to Alaska round trip out of Vancouver, B.C. It'll call at the Alaska towns of Skagway, Juneau and Ketchikan. It'll also visit Tracy Arm and Glacier Bay National Park for glacier viewing.
  • Nieuw Amsterdam: The 2,106-passenger ship will primarily operate one-way voyages to Alaska between Vancouver, B.C., and Whittier, Alaska. It'll call at the Alaska towns of Skagway, Juneau and Ketchikan. It'll also visit Glacier Bay National Park for glacier viewing, as well as either Hubbard Glacier or College Fjord.
  • Noordam : Like Nieuw Amsterdam, the 1,924-passenger vessel will primarily operate one-way voyages to Alaska between Vancouver, B.C., and Whittier, Alaska. It'll call at the Alaska towns of Skagway, Juneau and Ketchikan. It'll also visit Glacier Bay National Park for glacier viewing as well as either Hubbard Glacier or College Fjord.

The appeal of the one-way sailings on Nieuw Amsterdam and Noordam is that they can be combined with stays at the Holland America lodges mentioned above to create the longer "cruisetours" of Alaska that combine a one-way cruise with a land tour.

The land tour portion of such trips brings visits to such well-known interior Alaska locations as Denali National Park and the town of Fairbanks. Holland America is also unique among cruise lines in offering cruisetours that include a land tour into the Yukon Territory of Canada.

4. Panama Canal

Have you always wanted to experience a transit through the Panama Canal? Among major cruise lines, Holland America has one of the biggest array of sailings through the waterway.

In a typical year, the line will operate more than two dozen voyages to the canal, some of which are round-trip sailings from Florida's Port Everglades while others are one-way trips between Fort Lauderdale and San Diego, California.

In the case of the former sailings, Holland America ships only transit part-way through the canal after entering it through the Gatun Locks on its Caribbean side. Such trips typically include a transit into the canal through the locks, cruising in the canal to Gatun Lake and a transit out of the canal through the locks before a stop at nearby Colon, Panama.

Among the shore excursions available from the port of Colon is a bus tour to see the locks in action from observation areas on land.

Other port calls during such Panama Canal cruises typically include the Caribbean islands of Aruba and Curacao; Cartagena, Colombia; and Puerto Limon, Costa Rica.

In the case of the one-way voyages between Florida and California, Holland America's ships will make the full journey through the canal's three sets of locks from the Caribbean to the Pacific or vice versa.

Other port calls during such cruises typically include Puerto Vallarta and Hautulco, Mexico; Puerto Quetzal, Guatemala; Corinto, Nicaragua; Puerto Caldera, Costa Rica; and Cartagena, Colombia.

5. The World

holland america world cruises

In addition to focused voyages in a wide range of cruise destinations from Europe to Alaska, Holland America has long been known for epic around-the-world voyages that include stops at dozens of destinations in four, five or even six continents.

These trips typically take place on the line's smaller vessels and can last four months or longer, allowing Americans to travel across the globe without ever getting on an airplane.

Normally, Holland America's around-the-world voyages begin and end at Florida's Port Everglades.

The line plans one such trip for 2023 — a 128-day voyage from Port Everglades starting on Jan. 3, 2023, that includes stops in North America, Australia, Africa and Europe.

Taking place on the 1,964-passenger Zuiderdam, the trip includes a transit of the Panama Canal, multiple stops in French Polynesia including Bora Bora and Moorea; visits to multiple destinations in New Zealand; and calls at Madagascar, Mozambique, South Africa, Namibia, Angola, Ghana, the Ivory Coast, Gambia and Senegal.

In addition to its around-the-world cruises, Holland America is also known for full circumnavigations of South America that begin and end in Port Everglades.

For 2023, the line plans one such journey — a 74-day cruise on the 1,432-passenger Volendam that starts on Jan. 3, 2023.

Bottom line

Holland America offers an incredibly wide range of itineraries in cruise destinations around the world, from South America to Asia. However, you'll find the most choices among Holland America itineraries in Europe, Alaska and the Caribbean. The line is also well-known for voyages through the Panama Canal and for its epic around-the-world cruises. Its annual around-the-world sailings, in particular, are something that sets it apart from other big lines.

Sailing with Holland America: How It Differs from Other Cruise Lines

Ways Holland America is Different

Sharing is caring!

Choosing the right cruise line is key to having a great vacation, and Holland America Line offers a different experience than what you’ll find on some other popular cruise lines. With a rich history and legacy spanning over 150 years, Holland America has evolved from a transatlantic passenger line into a premium cruise brand known for its mid-size ships, elegant ambiance, and thoughtful amenities.

Even though, as someone in my mid-twenties, I may be younger than most Holland America guests, I’ve found sailing with Holland America enjoyable for several of these reasons.

In this post, I’ll share ten aspects that set Holland America apart from other cruise lines, including key differences to be aware of.

10 Things That Make Holland America Different

1. mid-size cruise ships.

Holland-America

When you cruise with Holland America , you aren’t going to be sailing on mega-ships. In fact, their mid-size cruise ships range from 1,400 passengers to 2,700 passengers. With fewer passengers, you’ll experience shorter lines and fewer crowds, creating a laid-back cruising experience.

While Holland America’s cruise ships doesn’t have waterslides and theme park style attractions that you’ll find on some popular cruise lines, they still offer a range of amenities for your enjoyment. From sports courts to pools and hot tubs, you’ll find everything you need for a fun and relaxing cruise.

Holland America’s newest class of ships, the Pinnacle Class, comes in at just under 100,000 tons. As someone who has cruised on many different cruise ships, I think the Pinnacle Class is perfectly sized.

One of the best features of Holland America’s Pinnacle Class ships is their ease of navigation. Unlike the sprawling mega-ships, these mid-size vessels are designed for easy exploration, with less chance of getting lost. It’s a small detail that makes a big difference to your cruising experience.

In an industry where many major cruise lines have been focusing on making their cruise ships bigger and more extravagant, Holland America has embraced the mid-size cruise ship. This unique selling point makes HAL stand out from the other cruise lines.

2. Grand Dutch Cafe

Holland America Grand Dutch Cafe

Exclusively available on Pinnacle Class cruise ships, the Grand Dutch Cafe is a rare gem among casual dining venues at sea. This unique experience, found only on Holland America ships, features Dutch decor, serves specialty Dutch drinks, and offers a menu that’s a true reflection of Dutch culinary culture.

Before sailing with Holland America, I didn’t know much about the Dutch culture. However, the Grand Dutch Cafe was a great way to experience local Dutch cuisine.

Furthermore, the food is freshly made, tasty, and complimentary! The Dutch Pea Soup, Bossche Bol, and Dutch Poffertjes are some of my favorite Dutch Cafe menu items that are worth trying.

3. Unique History

holland america new york hotel rotterdam

Since 1873, Holland America has offered transatlantic voyages between Europe and the Americas. Originally headquartered in Rotterdam, Netherlands, HAL established itself as a prestigious and reliable shipping line.

Over the years, Holland America evolved from a shipping company to a cruise line focusing on leisure travel. In 1989, the Dutch cruise line was acquired by Carnival Corporation, becoming part of the world’s largest cruise vacation company.

Now, Holland America is a cruise line known for exceptional service, enriching itineraries, and traditional cruising experience.

Origin Story

On board Holland America cruise ships, you’ll learn about their unique and important history on the first night of your cruise in the show, Origin Story. Origin Story is shown on the World Stage, covering the triumphs, challenges and impact Holland America has had throughout its 150+ years.

4. Music Walk

holland america cruise music walk

If you enjoy listening to live music, then you’ll love Music Walk. This is easily the most happening place to be each evening of a Holland America cruise!

Music Walk features three venues, Billboard Onboard, Rolling Stone Rock Room, and B.B King’s Blues Club.

Throughout the evenings, Music Walk is where a lot of the evening entertainment is taking place. You’ll see cruise passengers enjoying a drink , relaxing, and dancing, to the live music.

Since Music walk features different genres of music, there is something for everyone of every age. The performances alternate, so you can get the change to see multiple live musical performances in the same evening.

5. Pickleball Courts

pickleball holland america

Whether you’re a new or experienced pickleball player, you’ll love the Pickleball courts onboard Holland America. Every Holland America cruise ship is equipped with a Pickleball court. At the Pickleball court, you can take lessons, play games against other passengers, and enter tournaments.

Since Holland America is the official Professional Pickleball Association partner, Pickleball is extremely popular onboard. The Pickleball court is always busy, making finding other people to play with easy.

Furthermore, you can purchase your own Holland America pickleball set in the gift shop. This is a great souvenir and a nice touch for those who love Pickleball.

6. Enrichment Activities

holland america cruise

Something that sets Holland America apart from other cruise lines is their emphasis on enrichment activities. Onboard Holland America ships, you can attend presentations about destinations, cultural topics, enjoy wine tastings, and even painting classes.

One of the most memorable experiences during my Alaska cruise with Holland America was the opportunity to learn from a local wildlife expert. As we sailed through Glacier Bay National Park, we also had a park ranger on hand to spot wildlife, answer questions, and share their knowledge about Alaska with us.

I enjoyed learning about Alaska directly from these local experts. This made me appreciate visiting Glacier Bay and Alaska much more, and I felt I learned something new throughout my cruise vacation.

7. Destinations

Half Moon Cay Cruise Private Island

Whether you’re looking for a relaxing 7-day Caribbean itinerary or a 120+ grand voyage, Holland America likely has an itinerary you’ll enjoy. Holland America visits all seven continents and has some of the most interesting and unique itineraries any cruise line offers.

If Alaska is on your wish list, consider sailing with Holland America. Since Holland America has been sailing to Alaska since 1947, you’ll have more access to wildlife than any other cruise line.

With over 70 years of experience in Alaskan waters, Holland America cruises offer an expertise and deep knowledge of the region, providing passengers with unique and immersive experiences getting up close to Alaskan nature and wildlife.

Furthermore, Holland America’s private island, Half Moon Cay , is a cruiser favorite. At Half Moon Cay, Bahamas, you’ll find stunning crystal blue beaches, white sand, tropical wildlife, and fun excursions.

Holland America takes pride in its interesting and unique itineraries as a cruise line. If you’re a cruiser who loves visiting new destinations, you’ll enjoy cruising with Holland America.

8. Fresh Fish Program

Holland America Line’s Fresh Fish Program is a unique culinary initiative designed to provide guests with the freshest seafood available while at sea. HAL uses locally sourced, sustainable fish and seafood, ensuring fresh, environmentally responsible, and delicious dishes are served on board.

When the cruise ship docks in various ports, the culinary team sources fresh fish from local vendors and markets, allowing guests to enjoy regionally inspired and fresh seafood meals. Holland America’s commitment to quality and sustainability enhances the onboard dining experience.

9. Dutch Influence

holland america cruise

Onboard Holland America cruise ships, you’ll notice the rich Dutch influence woven throughout your experience. From the elegant Dutch decor adorning the ship to the distinctive Royal Delft dishes, the commitment to its heritage is evident. Guests can enjoy unique events such as the Royal Dutch Tea and the vibrant Orange Party, all of which celebrate and honor Holland America’s proud Dutch roots.

Orange Party

If you’re going on first Holland America cruise, don’t forget to pack some orange clothing for the Orange Party. It’s a big part of the experience, where you’ll join other passengers in wearing something orange as a tribute to the Dutch Royal Family.

This fun tradition extends onboard, and it creates a very unique atmosphere. There will also be Dutch treats and snacks, orange colored drinks (like an Aperol Spritz), and music and dancing.

The Dutch influence onboard HAL cruise ships is something you will not find on any other cruise line!

10. Upgraded Cabin Amenities

holland america Cabin

One of the benefits of sailing with Holland America are upgraded cabin amenities . In your stateroom, you’ll find plush bathrobes and umbrellas to use during your cruise. In the well appointed bathrooms, you’ll find Elemis toiletries, including handsoap, lotion, shampoo and conditioner.

During our cruises to Alaska and Norway , the inclusion of an umbrella in our stateroom was a thoughtful touch. It was handy on those rainy days in port, ensuring we were always prepared for the weather.

Furthermore, Holland America offers twice-a-day housekeeping and turndown service. While housekeeping (down to once a day on some cruise lines) has been a cutback frequent cruisers have been complaining, this is a nice little luxury of classic cruising still found on HAL cruises.

How holland america is evolving to attract a broader audience.

The cruise line attracts customers of all ages.

While some travelers may think of Holland America as a line that caters to older travelers or multi-generational families, the numbers show otherwise. Its ships have amenities like kids clubs, but the cruise brand chooses to focus less on customer demographics, and more on “psychographics.” Understanding what drives consumers to take a trip to somewhere new and the emotions that go along with it have helped the line grow without the water slides, racetracks and theme park attractions of other ships.

Psychographics are a focus for the cruise line, which are helping to expand its audience.

“Holland America Line is looking to attract passengers with a particular mindset – rather than targeting a younger demographic,” writes Harry Kemble for Travel Weekly , adding that the approach seemed to help bring in a younger audience anyway.

Cruise lines are in a constant battle to win market share. Holland America is one of the oldest sailing lines in the world, but that does not mean it attracts the most mature-in-age clientele. Instead, it has been steadily investing in culinary and entertainment experiences, two things that are top of mind when consumers consider a cruise. This focus has helped the brand continue to evolve in numerous ways without leaving behind its core strengths.

Committed to its niche markets

The cruise line is adding a glacier guarantee to its Alaska sailings.

Best High-Yield Savings Accounts Of 2024

Holland America has long been a leader in cruises to Alaska and has invested in hotels and wilderness lodges in the state. This allows it to sell pre- or post-tour packages in conjunction with its seasonal cruises to Alaska. The line bases six ships between April and October with July and August being its busiest months (also coinciding with school breaks.

Holland America is so invested in Alaska that it owns hotels and resorts around the state, including within the national parks, through which it offers special deals on vacation packages to cruise guests.

Holland America bases six ships in Alaska each season.

It recently launched a new “glacier guarantee” on its sailings within Alaska, that’s how committed the line is that travelers will see what they come to see. If you don’t see at least one glacier on the sailing, you receive a future cruise credit equal to 15% of your cruise fare.

There is also a new Glacier Day on each Alaska sailing, highlighting the fact that Holland America offers more glacier experiences than any other cruise line. It includes scenic commentary, Dutch pea soup on the deck, cocktails made using real glacier ice, talks from Glacier Bay National Park Rangers and Huna cultural interpreters and an open bow to see glaciers up close.

The cruise line promotes responsible wildlife viewing rather than letting travelers roam free within ... [+] the national parks.

It is all part of the line’s “We Love Alaska” programming with onboard presentations, menu items and special events that honor the people and culture of Alaska. People were even able to help the line name an orphan moose via social media in a partnership with the Alaska Wildlife Conservation Center, which takes in injured and orphaned animals.

The winning name, Denali, will be used for the next orphaned animal that the center adopts. Holland America promotes responsible wildlife viewing from its ships and on its shore excursions.

Holland America is known in the industry for its Alaska sailings.

Beth Bodensteiner, chief commercial officer for Holland America Line, calls it a “fine-tuning” of its Alaska sailings where “everything from cocktails to wildlife maps” immerses guests in “all facets of Alaska.”

The line offers seven and 14-day sailings as well as a new 28-day Arctic Circle itinerary that visits a dozen Alaskan ports. This is part of a strategy this year to offer longer sailings. Travel Weekly reports that there are options to sail for as many as 35 days on transatlantic journeys adding ports like Bermuda and the Canary Islands in Spain that have returned to the cruise line’s route map.

Holland America has itineraries all around the world.

Holland America is more than Alaska though. The line sails in the family-friendly Caribbean, where it will have a 15% boost in capacity this year over 2023, according to Cruise Industry News . It also has itineraries to all seven continents, including longer cruises that cross oceans or world sailings that sometimes are advertised as “pole-to-pole” expeditions.

For the 2025-2026 season, the cruise line plans to base its three, newest Pinnacle Class ships in the Caribbean. It will also offer itineraries as long as 14 nights and base its ships in Miami, both of which are new for Holland America.

Dutch heritage sets it apart

One of the main restaurants aboard a Holland America ship

The cruise line was founded in the Netherlands in 1873 and made its first sailing to the United States in 1882. Like other companies of the day, it focused on providing transportation between continents as well as moving goods and mail around the world. These days, the company is part of Carnival Cruise Line, but it remains committed to its heritage.

The brand embraces that with its Dutch Day to honor the cruise line’s history of 150 years. It takes place on every sailing with Dutch-themed menus that complement what is served in Grand Dutch Café aboard each ship serving Dutch snacks like chocoladebols (a Dutch Cream Puff), maple stroopwafels and gevulde koeken (a Dutch cookie with marzipan).

Sustainability focus

Chef Masaharu Morimoto spearheads the sustainable fish program.

The cruise line was the first (and is the only) cruise brand to receive certification from the Responsible Fisheries Management Board. On its sailings, the fish served in its dining rooms is sourced locally with special selections highlighted on each menu.

But, that’s not enough for a line that makes many of its most iconic sailings through protected waters. The company conducted biofuel tests aboard the MS Rotterdam by using 100% low carbon intensity biofuel when sailing in the Norwegian World Heritage Fjords. The line is testing the practice although it had “nothing to share” at press time for potential expansion of the program.

The Norwegian fjords are another hallmark destination for Holland America.

The Norwegian Fjords, a bread and butter sailing for the line, have begun to tighten requirements on the types of ships and how they sail through their famous waters.

Its new Pinnacle class of ships doubles down on these environmental measures, too. Its two newest ships, Nieuw Statendam and Rotterdam, use LED lighting throughout, and the rest of the fleet has switched to this energy-saving system in public areas. The line also piloted a test aboard Rotterdam where it used 100% low carbon intensity biofuel for one of its engines on a sailing through the Norwegian fjords.

By 2030, the company wants to reduce its food waste by 50%, and it has installed food dehydrators on all of its ships that help to reduce waste volume by 75%-95%.

Culinary options grow

The cruise line relies on local seafood aboard all of its ships.

Onboard dining is a quintessential part of any cruise, and Holland America continues to grow its lineup of specialty restaurants. Chef Masaharu Morimoto spearheads the sustainable fish program and lends his recipe talent to the menu in the main dining room.

It has even been featured during live broadcasts from the line’s Eurodam ship on Bravo’s “Top Chef.” Morimoto also has his Morimoto By Sea specialty restaurant (his first on a cruise ship) on Holland America’s Nieuw Amsterdam, but also as a pop-up experience in different restaurants on the other ships in the fleet.

Sourcing sustainable seafood is a key focus for Holland America.

The focus of the program is to tap into the cruise line’s network of iconic ports and deliver as many as 80 types of fresh fish “port to plate” onboard within 48 hours of being caught. Holland America has been honored by the Marine Stewardship Council and Aquaculture Stewardship Council and is the first cruise brand to serve 100% fresh, certified sustainable and traceable wild Alaska seafood in its restaurants via its Responsible Fisheries Management certification.

Many of these same eco-friendly provisions take place at its land-based venues as well. McKinley Chalet in Alaska is one of many resorts within Denali National Park to receive Marine Stewardship Council certification, following in the footsteps of its sibling marine resorts.

The cruise line has numerous restaurants with various types of cuisine.

It’s not just restaurants where it wants to stand out, but in its food and beverage partnerships, too. Holland America works with many well-known brands to bring this focus to life. Most recently, it tapped Lindt Chocolates to supply Lindor truffles as part of its turndown amenity service.

Award-winning bartender Ivy Mix is also helping the line develop a menu of Latin-inspired cocktails that appear on its Mexico and Latin American sailings.

Onboard entertainment in every form

Holland America is adding new production shows for different ships, including 15 shows specifically ... [+] for its "grand voyage" world sailings.

Holland America has long been known for having live entertainment in various corners of the ship. It also offers musical revues, guest performers and comedians, none of which comes as a surprise to traditional cruise guests. But, the line is investing in other partnerships that attract a younger or more engaged traveler.

This year, it launched a partnership with Audible to swap onboard libraries for a virtual book club offering with an infinite number of choices. It is the first cruise line to offer a co-branded book club of this scale. Content includes everything from language lessons and history books to destination guides and fiction.

The thermal suite is a place for guests to relax in the spa.

“We know from extensive research that reading is a top priority for guests both on and off vacation, so the Audible collaboration was a natural next step for us to connect with our guest community,” said Kacy Cole, chief marketing officer, Holland America Line.

Passengers also receive an extended Audible free trial, in addition to complimentary in-stateroom Audible content so that their experience continues long after they disembark. It comes with a monthly book club that also includes podcasts and other original content. This is made even easier to use now that all of the line’s 11 ships have SpaceX's Starlink wireless high-speed internet.

All Holland America ships have numerous venues with live music.

Fifteen new production shows are scheduled to debut in 2025 on the line’s “grand voyages,” which are its longest and travel around the world. According to Bill Prince, vice president of entertainment, Holland America has never introduced this many shows at one time.

Many of the shows and musical performances will tie together with the cruise itinerary. For example, European tenors will perform on Mediterranean sailings while Nova Scotian music will feature on Eastern Canada sailings. The cruise line is also adding the Rolling Stone Lounge (with its seven-piece band that plays a variety of music like rock and rhythm and blues) to more ships and while growing the onboard Billboard Onboard piano bar that plays from the Billboard’s top 100 hits with a different theme each evening.

By leaning into the emotional connections of travelers, Holland America is taking a different approach using “psychographics” to grow market share. Instead of adding flashy rides, it is targeting experiences that transcend age, helping the brand draw to a well-rounded mix of travelers.

Port of Call Port of Call (Arrival, Departure)

holland america world cruises

Nowadays Rotterdam is a vital part of the economy of the Netherlands. The Port of Rotterdam, the largest port in the world with a total throughput of about 300 million metric tons a year provides a solid base for industry in and around the Rotterdam area. Its population is about 575000, which makes it one of the largest cities in the Netherlands, but the number of people that work in the Rotterdam area or are otherwise economically dependent of it exceeds that number by far. The density of population is among the highest in the Netherlands, exceeding 4000 per square kilometer. Shipping, storage and forwarding are of course among the most important activities in the region, but the port of Rotterdam has also created a large chemical industry, which is fully dependent upon the transport facilities for the inflow of crude oil and the shipping of the various refined end products. Large petrochemical plants have sprung up, especially on the south bank of the Maas. These plants are in operation 24 hours a day. The development of Europoort ('Euro gate') started in 1957. A large complex of ports and industrial areas was created between Rotterdam and the entry to the North Sea. When more space was needed, the Maasvlakte ('Maas Flats') was created. By means of dikes, dams and sand deposits the coast line was altered to include many square kilometers of newly created land, where the Petroleum Harbors, container terminals, ore terminals and the Maasvlakte power plant are located. An interesting feature is the 'disaster area', a training complex where fire brigades train to cope with large-scale industrial accidents. The complex includes a grounded tanker that is set on fire several times a day. The name Europoort suggests that Rotterdam wanted to become the gateway to Europe. By 1963 this suggestion had become outdated, because in that year Rotterdam could claim to be the largest port in the world, a record that it still holds. In fact, the Berge Stahl, a 365000 ton ore carrier, is fully dependent on the port of Rotterdam, since this is the only port on the European continent that this ship (with its 23m/75ft draught) can access. After the flood in 1953 a large project was initiated to prevent such floodings in the future. This project, the 'Delta plan', involved stronger and higher dikes and numerous flood barriers. The latest of those flood barriers to be completed was the storm surge barrier in the Nieuwe Waterweg near Hoek van Holland. Two enormous doors mounted on swing arms can be used to close off the Nieuwe Waterweg, should storm and high water require so in order to protect the country from flooding. Normally the doors are open, so as not to impede the flow of ships through the Nieuwe Waterweg. Building and development have become a way of life for Rotterdam. The city has continued to grow, and it shows no signs of slowing down. And although this constant increase of population, urbanization and development all breed their own problems, Rotterdam is ready for the next millennium. As the economic heart of the Netherlands, with a population heading towards 600000, it had better be ready.

Funchal city is the capital and owes its name to the plant called "funcho". This plant existed in abundance in this area. Sweets are still made from this plant today. The category of city was granted by King Manuel I, on 21 August, 1508. It's a city of white rows of houses that climb up the hills, like an amphitheatre around a beautiful bay of blue sea. This architectonic distribution, due to the region's rugged and high terrain, covers itself with special beauty to bring in the New Year, since it makes it possible to put on a fireworks display of rare beauty and present a unique festive illumination for the season. Funchal's port is the entry door for many cruise ships as well as for the loading and unloading of goods shipped by sea. The city is divided into three principal areas: on the west side, we have the tourist area where we find most of the hotels; on the east side, the so-called "Zona Velha" or "Cidade Velha" (Old Zone or Old Town), where old constructions predominate, some of them having been transformed into typical restaurants; and the central part, where a great part of the commerce and characteristic monuments are found.

Santa Cruz de la Palma

The capital and port, Santa Cruz de La Palma is a charming town with beautiful streets, squares and steeply inclined alley ways and offers visitors a lively ambience with its friendly people. It sits on the edge of a volcanic crater which gives the town the form of an amphitheatre. The picturesque Real Street which is the centre of commercial and social life leads you to Espana Square where two fine examples of 16th century buildings are to be found, the Church of Iglesia del Salvador and the Town Hall. Santa Cruz de La Palma also has an excellent Museum of National History with wonderful zoological examples and traces of the original population as well as a large library.

The island of Tenerife is the largest of the Canary archipelago - 2,053 square kilometres - and it has the shape characteristic of a triangle. The island of eternal spring because of its peerless climate is full of huge contrasts and has a great variety of scenery in the different regions. A mountain chain runs through its centre fro Anaga to Teno and on both of its slopes there are large, exuberantly fertile valleys, among them especially La Orotava and Gumar. In the heart of the chain there is a gigantic, natural crater, called Las Cañadas del Teide, which is about 29 km across and has officially been declared a National Park. It lies over 2,000 m above sea level. North of the crater stands El Pico del Teide, a 3,718 m high mountain, which is the highest point in Spain. It is snowcovered in the winter and marks the island with its unique silhouette. Tenerife has an extremely varied plant life, large, wooded mountains, extensive areas where banana, tomato, potato and other agricultural products are grown. Its coast is rocky and lined by cliffs in some places, while in others there are beaches with soft, clean sand, which are sometimes black and sometimes golden. The capital of the island and of the province is Santa Cruz de Tenerife, which has 220,000 inhabitants. It is a cheerful, light-filled, modern city on a gentle slope and it is open towards the wide plains in the south. It is the seat of the military headquarters, La Capitanía General de Canarias, and Santa Cruz is known as a hospitable, cordial city. Beautiful gardens, especially García Sanabria, the Municipal Park, and busy streets make it easy for the visitor to feel at home there. The port in a large bay surrounded by the steep cliffs of the Anaga mountain chain is an important sea traffic and communications centre between Europe, Africa and America. It is visited by ships from all kinds of countries and numerous tourist cruises make it their port of call throughout the year. It is the busiest Spanish port as regards the movement of goods and it is among the most important regarding the number of ships. The whole city deliberately moves down towards the port and comes to rest, though full of bustling activity, in the nearby España and La Candelaria Squares. Around the latter there are some of the important official buildings, such as El Cabildo Insular, the island government building, where the Archaeological and Anthropological Museum is found; Carta Palace - a curious example of regional architecture and decoration, dating from the 17C and today officially a Sight of Interest to National Art and Architecture -, the Casino Principal, the Monument to the Fallen and El Triunfo de la Candelaria are also found in this area. La Concepción's is the most important church. Its nave and four aisles shelter interesting Baroque works of art and most valuable reminders of Canary history. There La Cruz de la Conquista, the Cross of Conquest, is kept together with the flags taken from Sir Horace Nelson, the British admiral, on the occasion of his unsuccessful attack on the fortified city. Carta Chapel and the beautiful choir stalls, which are found in the presbytery today, are also of interest to art. Another church worthy of special mention is San Francisco's, which is 18C Baroque next to a beautiful square. On El Principe Square with its lush laurel trees, there is the Municipal Museum of Paintings and Sculpture, with important paintings by Ribera, B. Brueghel, Madrazo, Van Loo, etc., as well as a department especially dedicated to Canary painting. On Anaga Avenue, a beautiful, broad thoroughfare skirting the port area of Santa Cruz, there is Paso Alto Castle and its Military Museum - where objects reminiscent of the past are kept -, a peaceful place for a walk near the Royal Yacht Club of Tenerife, which lies in the vicinity of the Nautical School and close to La Casa del mar. There is a magnificent view of the bay. The Provincial Public Library and the Provincial Office of Records are found in La Casa de la Cultura, comodoro Rodin St. Near the city centre, there are two Places of Interest to National tourism: las Teresitas, with a 1,500m long, artificial beach of golden sands, and Las Gaviotas. Especially noteworthy is the picturesque Taganana are, with the El Roque and Almáciga beaches of black sand. The Reina Sofía International Airport - Tenerife Sur - lies 60km from Santa Cruz and the Tenerife Norte Airport is nine kilometres away. The capital is the point of departure of the great southern motorway of the island, which links Santa Cruz with the different places and tourist centres of that area, and of the northern motorway, which leads to the important tourist centre of El Puerto de la Cruz; 22km from the capital lies Mount La Esperanza, covered with extensive Canary pine forests. There is a road crossing over it leading to Las Cañadas del Teide. On the way there are observation platforms with breathtaking views of the islands.

Las Palmas de Gran Canaria with its 400,000 inhabitants is a vibrant modern city which also has a contrasting historical centre with lovely old buildings and a well-developed tourist infrastructure to accommodate the most demanding visitor. Las Palmas de Gran Canaria has always been an important junction and commercial centre on the routes between Europe, Africa and America. This international vocation has made it the ideal spot for holding meetings both at national and international level. With good communications by air and sea and 20 kilometers away from the city, its airport has daily links to the main cities in Europe and America. The city's endowment of cultural and leisure activities and the possibility to attend exhibitions, lectures, theatre and concerts all the year round, provide a further incentive to choose this city, giving whatever event may be organised here even greater guarantee of success. It is worth noting that according to the North American Travel Association journal, the capital of Gran Canaria has the best climate in the world, with an annual average temperature of 23ºC making possible the bath in its beaches at any time of the year.

Arrecife was once just a port - that of Teguise. There were two main fortresses, San Gabriel and San José with a third - Castillo de San Gabriel - located on a small island in front of Arrecife. The third fort was connected to the main one by a drawbridge. It was from these forts that the islanders tried (unsucessfully in the end) to defend themselves against pirate attacks. A fourth castle, that of Castillo de San Juan, is home to the city's Museum of Contemporary Art. One of the museum's main attractions is the work of Cesar Manrique. Today, Arrecife is the island's capital. Of the 90,000 residents on Lanzarote, half reside in Arrecife. Along the beach-front there's a wide, palm-lined promenade. The wide, main street through the city is Léon y Castillo and most of the remaining streets of the city are narrow and form part of the one-way system. The Gran Hotel in Arrecife is the only high-rise building on the island. Since its construction, laws have been passed preventing any further high rises and the hotel itself, closed down and currently unused. Leon y Castillo is the main shopping street and as you walk along away from the seafront, head to the right as you come to the end of this street and enjoy the view over El Charco. Here's a strange tip for you; if you're down by the fishing docks when the fisherman return (bearing in mind they can often be out for up to three weeks at a time) and have a plastic bag with you, the generous fisherman are known for giving away samples of their sardine catch. Barbecued sardines are a local favourate.

Lisbon is Portugal’s hilly, coastal capital city. From imposing São Jorge Castle, the view encompasses the old city’s pastel-colored buildings, Tagus Estuary and Ponte 25 de Abril suspension bridge. Nearby, the National Azulejo Museum displays 5 centuries of decorative ceramic tiles. Just outside Lisbon is a string of Atlantic beaches, from Cascais to Estoril.

Dover is one of the most-visited towns in England but most of the 13 million people who travel to Dover each year are bound for one of the many ferries, catamarans or hydrofoils that cross the English Channel (more properly called the Dover Straits) to North-West France. A small number of travellers actually stop in the town and enjoy the 'Dover hospitality' that is on offer. There is information on these pages for people travelling into Dover by road/rail/cycle and for those wanting to take a ferry to France, including Port & Ferry News. Drivers will see very little of Dover itself as they enter on either the A20 from the South or the A2 from the North-West. In both cases, the roads arrive at the Harbour, where they join. The whole of Dover's town stretches inland from the Harbour and continues along three valleys into the Kent countryside. Dover is at one end of the North Downs and has several ranges of hills, two of which have fortresses dating from the medieval and Roman eras, as well as more modern (19th Century) times. Behind the town centre are the modern-day barracks, Dover's past and current commitments to the country have always included more than can be seen under the famous White Cliffs. Modern-day Dover has a mixed economy but is still very-heavily dependant on the ferry industry. Other major employers include: the Ministry of Defence (at Connaught Barracks), numerous freight companies, vehicle sellers & repairers! The history of Dover is best covered in the many books and videos on the subject (available, of course, at the town's Museum!).
