2019 Land, sand, sea and Spain

It started out like any other year for Sixthman – lots of back-to-back Caribbean cruises starting in January and continuing through March. We took on several returning events, and added some new faces to our roster with Kesha’s Weird and Wonderful Rainbow Ride , our third-ever TV-show based event with the Trailer Park Boys , and welcomed Melissa Etheridge and Jon Bon Jovi to the Sixthman artist host family.

After a running start, our year became drastically different as we took on new challenges with Resort Festivals and Europe! Kid Rock returned, but this time brought his Flyin' High Island Jam  to the Dominican Republic at the Hard Rock Hotel & Casino. Then our staff headed overseas for the first time in Sixthman history, bringing our floating festivals to an entire new audience, including an all-new crowd for us with Belle and Sebastian’s Boaty Weekender.  We also explored Europe with some familiar faces by bringing Joe Bonamassa and Jon Bon Jovi's already-established events across the Atlantic. We hit the sand once again in November for the inaugural All The Best Fest with John Prine at Breathless + Now Onyx Resort. And that's the story of how we completed 19 events in 2019!

2018 Conquered the quest to 1 million

Over the years, we’ve kept track of how many days we spend at sea as a company – and we encourage our guests to do the same! We call it Saltiness, and if you’ve ever sailed with us, you can find the information in your Sixthman account. We’ve had our sights set on conquering that huge “1 Million Days at Sea” milestone for years, and we finally hit it onboard the 18th sailing of  The Rock Boat.  We also encouraged our guests to share their personal number of days at sea with us all season.

Our spring roster consisted of all returning events once again, and we brought two brand new festivals to life in our Fall season, first with  Brantley Gilbert’s Kick It In The Ship Cruise , followed by  Chris Jericho’s Rock ‘n’ Wrestling Rager at Sea , featuring the first-ever wrestling ring at sea! Not to mention, both of these gave all of our other events a run for their money when it comes to cruise name length.

2017 Two ships and a dream

Over the past several years, Norwegian Pearl had truly become our home away from home, and we continued to make modifications and staging improvements so it was even more suitable for our events. However, Norwegian Jade, the Pearl’s sister ship, was relocated to Tampa and became a brand new venue option for us. There were a few differences, but the majority of the ship was the same footprint and Norwegian agreed to outfit the ship similarly to the Pearl, giving us two ships to choose from when producing our festivals. We were able to use both ships throughout our season – and for the first time ever, we had a “changeover day” in two different cities. The disembarkation for the   Walker Stalker Cruise   in Miami was the same day as the embarkation of   Keeping The Blues Alive at Sea   in Tampa. Obviously we had to dive into some crazy new logistical planning to pull that off, but we made it happen! We added one new event in the Spring with   Pitbull’s After Dark Party , and the rest of our Spring events were returning favorites. We proudly celebrated   Cayamo ’s 10 th   sailing in February, and we also hit a major company-wide milestone on that same sailing by completing our 100 th   festival at sea! The fall brought one more brand-new festival our way with   Warped Rewind at Sea , a new partnership with Vans Warped Tour.

2016 Expanding our reach

For over a decade, we’ve pioneered the festival cruising industry and have continued raising the bar across the board. So what happens when we expand into industries beyond music, our tried and true? In 2016, we found out as we took the leap by jumping into the realms of entertainment and sports. Brand new to the Sixthman roster,  The Impractical Jokers Cruise ,  Walker Stalker Cruise , and  Gronk’s Party Ship  made their inaugural journeys across the Caribbean. New communities were formed and we learned even better ways to serve our guests through a different scope. We also added one new music festival to our roster with the first-ever  Outlaw Country Cruise , a partnership with Sirius XM's Outlaw Country. We finished out our spring season with six returning festivals - all full ships. We headed back out to sea in the fall for a short one-cruise “season” as we celebrated our 6 th   sailing with The Hottest Band in the World, KISS!

2015 New office, new beginnings

As we entered a new year, we found ourselves getting settled into a brand new office. The team members that we’d brought on months prior had gone from timid toe-dippers, to salty sailors eager to explore greater depths of our expanding company. Based on what we learned in 2014, we scaled back the number of events with the intention of working smarter, not harder. The Rock Boat hit the high seas for it’s milestone 15th voyage, and we introduced another new event, Blues Alive at Sea with Joe Bonnamassa . Our CEO, Andy Levine, joined the Sixthman Home Team for the first time ever and remained on land during the first round of cruises, leaving the events in the capable hands of his team. When he sailed later on in the season as a guest, we didn’t believe he’d stay hands-off and actually enjoy a much-needed vacation…he proved us all wrong!

After the end of a successful spring season, we headed back to Atlanta to give our sea legs a much needed break. The recently launched Sixthman Sessions gained a great deal of momentum during the next few months as bands from all over the country graced our new office stage with live performances during the work day. October arrived like a freight train and we suddenly found ourselves aboard Norwegian Pearl ready to blow our final three events of 2015 out of the water.

2014 Back to back to back to back

One of the unanswered questions in our industry is this: What is the growth potential if we were to have a partner to invest with us, allowing us to take more risk? At the beginning of 2014, Norwegian brought a new ship to Miami and the Norwegian Pearl was available for an 8 week window between January and March, so we took it. We produced our annual cruises and added some new ones that we had been curious about over the years. Our new additions included Sail Across The Sun with Train , Progressive Nation at Sea and PARAHOY with Paramore . We gained a new partner with Delbert McClinton's team and helped them produce the 20th Sandy Beaches Cruise , and we experimented with programming the entertainment on a normal Norwegian sailing with the first-ever  LIVE LOUD Festival . We probably bit off more than we could chew. But we learned a ton about executing back-to-back festivals and finding the amount of new cruises that we could successfully nurture each year. After taking some time to rest and reset, we prepared ourselves for the fall cruise season and introduced the world to two new events; Florida Georgia Line’s: This Is How We Cruise and  Mad Decent Boat Party . Both events were highly successful, creating two new communities we loved serving. But with new beginnings came the end of an era as the 8th Simple Man Cruise with Lynyrd Skynyrd  made its final voyage, closing out the fall season of 2014 with fond memories and bittersweet farewells.

2013 The beat goes on

Norwegian made investments in the Norwegian Pearl to make it more “Music Cruise Friendly” and we moved all of our cruises over in 2013. It was nice to be such a priority on board and be able to work closer with the ship to deliver a world class experience to our guests and artists. While our guests preferred the Norwegian Pearl, there were little things that they missed from other ships we had used. We worked quickly to identify those things and fill the gaps to make it a better vacation overall. We realized the ship had 1200 crew members and we only showed up with 80 staff to work alongside them for each Sixthman sailing, and finding ways to allow them to be more engaged made a huge difference. There are 14 of them for every one of us, so we appreciated them having the enthusiasm needed to make our festivals happen. This year we added two new festivals to our lineup - ALABAMA Festival at Sea and our first bluegrass event, Mountain Song at Sea .

2012 The missing puzzle piece

In the summer of 2011, we were approached by Norwegian Cruise Line to become a part of their family via an acquisition. After months of discussions and negotiations, we agreed to become a Norwegian owned subsidiary in February of 2012. We produced 8 cruises in 2012. It was less than 2011, but our roster was strong -   The Rock Boat , Simple Man Cruise , KISS Kruise , 311 Cruise , Cayamo , TCM and Kid Rock Cruise  were all solid, recurring annual events. We wrapped up our 3-year stint with Graceland, our partners for the  Elvis Cruises, and also enjoyed the adventure of bringing the 1st Weezer Cruise to life. This year, we were finally able to bring The Rock Boat back to New Orleans, after our "unfinished business" there in 2005 due to Hurricane Katrina.

2011 Moving in the right direction

Kid Rock and VH1 returned for their 2nd year and we were fortunate to be able to start partnerships with 311 , KISS and Turner Classic Movies to create new festivals. 311’s fans crashed our servers for the first time ever during their presale signups, but the band and their excitable fans created the most amazing, energy-filled atmosphere for any Sail Away Show we had ever witnessed. KISS attracted fans from 30 countries and performed a 2 hour "unmasked and unplugged" set for their first Sail Away Show. Our first film festival with TCM gave us a chance to work with Celebrity Cruise Line and earn our first non-music driven sold out cruise.

After our spring events ended, we worked with our new sponsor, Cabo Wabo Tequila to plan  Sixthman's Summer Road Trip , our second-ever bus tour. We loved the idea of bringing some artist favorites from the cruises to guests in their hometowns!

2010 Getting stronger in more ways than one

After holding at 5-6 festivals a year in 2008 and 2009 to build our foundation and process, we had the opportunity to take on new events in 2010. We moved all but two cruises to Tampa and spread them out over 5 months to give ourselves a better chance for success. We brought the  VH1 ,  Zac Brown Band and Kid Rock  cruises to life for the first time and we also ventured into lifestyle cruising with a Jillian Michaels Cruise .  One highlight during this year was when Kid Rock decided to get on the Ship’s PA System at 1:30 in the morning to invite all the guests up to the pool deck for a party while he DJ’d for 3 hours. We also achieved a milestone by celebrating the 10th Rock Boat, which was still going strong as our flagship event.

2009 Now we groovin'

We applied our lessons from 2008 and were able to execute the  Simple Man Cruise , The Rock Boat , Ships & Dip , Cayamo and Mayercraft Carrier to our standards. We had only worked with Carnival in the past but selected Norwegian Cruise Line to host two of our cruises this year. The idea of going to a new cruise line was daunting but our team did an excellent job. Getting to work with two different cruise lines helped us learn much quicker and would end up being worth the extra work to build relationships and understand two styles. This was also the first time we jumped up to bigger ships, going from 2,200 person capacity ships to 2,800 person capacity ships. Our team used the term “huggable” to describe the difference between the smaller ships and the bigger ships. We felt like somewhere in the 2,500 person range, it lost a little bit of intimacy. Since then, we've mainly used the smaller ships because it felt like more of a "huggable" family.

That fall, we added one more new event to the roster with The Elvis Cruise , a partnership with Elvis Presley Enterprises.

2008 SOS we did too much

With 10 months to prepare, we felt that producing 5 cruises in one month was doable. In the end, it nearly brought us to our knees. The funny thing about our experience is that we were constantly in a position with our guests where we were asking them for a chance to make something right. While it took a huge emotional and physical toll on all of us, that experience had a profound impact on how we would prepare, staff and anticipate our guests' needs in the future. It’s almost like we had to go through that to see what we were made of. It also allowed our guests to see what we were made of. We never gave up and did not rest until all our guests were back on track. We still reflect back on this year as the one that defined what our recipe needed to be in order to grow without compromising the quality of the experience. Our new cruises this year, Cayamo and Mayercraft Carrier , proved to be great experiences and both signed on again for the following year.  At the end of 2008, Sixthman had outgrown the little yellow house we used as an office since 2004, and moved into a bigger space next to the Zoo in Atlanta.

2007 Going in some new fun directions

Going from one cruise a year to three in one month was overwhelming. Lynyrd Skynyrd went first followed by the the Rock Boat and then the Barenaked Ladies. We pulled it off and both Lynyrd Skynyrd and the Barenaked Ladies committed to doing it again because they loved it so much. That was a huge moment to see all three events become annual festivals instead of just one-offs. That’s when we really knew we had a business we could build. Within a few months of completing these festivals, John Mayer agreed to do a cruise and we decided to start another festival of our own,  Cayamo, a singer-songwriter based event conceived by Ken Levitan who managed Lyle Lovett, Emmylou Harris, Patty Griffin, John Hiatt, Shawn Colvin and Buddy Miller.

2006 Turning it back up again

The Rock Boat was hosted in January out of Galveston, TX due to the port of New Orleans still being closed from Hurricane Katrina. We allowed guests who had been booked on the cancelled TRB V to transfer to TRB VI, and ended up with a great crowd on board. One day, we hit some bad weather on the way back from Mexico and had to move all the shows indoors. The band Wideawake stole the show by playing in the Atrium as guests lined the railings of 7 storeis and stayed there for 2 hours.  On the last night of the cruise, Sister Hazel kicked off a jam and every artist from the lineup got up and played one song. It went 'til 6:00am as we pulled back into Galveston. Sister Hazel brought their new manager on the cruise and he liked it so much he asked us if we could do a cruise for his other band Lynyrd Skynyrd . This was an exciting time for us, but the idea of doing 3 cruises in a year totally freaked us out. Each one was like giving birth - just as painful and just as rewarding. That summer, we took The Rock Boat on the road for the first time and produced a bus tour called The Rock Bus, featuring two of The Rock Boat's most popular acts from that year, Wideawake and Zack Brown Band.

2005 Caught in the eye of the storm

The Rock Boat was set to sail out of New Orleans at the end of September and sold out months in advance.  We decided to add a 2nd Rock Boat in January of 2006, thinking we would have one event every 6 months.  One month before we were scheduled to sail, Hurricane Katrina hit New Orleans and Carnival rented our ship to FEMA so they could use it to house relief workers and families that had lost their homes. The Rock Boat was cancelled. We were sure we'd go out of business. Even though the cruise line owed us our charter fee back, we were still out all the money in marketing, artist fees and a year's worth of general operating costs. After a trip to Miami, Carnival agreed to pay us all our unrecoverable expenses and allow us to stay in business. Guests were calling us saying, “keep our money... just don’t go out of business."  This is when we realized we were in the community business, and that was a defining moment for sure. In an effort to make the best of a bad situation, we invited guests and artists to Atlanta during the weekend we were supposed to be on the cruise, and 500 guests traveled to " Rock For Relief ," a concert with most of the bands scheduled to play on board. We ended up raising $55,000 for Hurricane Katrina Relief that weekend.  At the end of December, Andy got a call from the Barenaked Ladies manager asking if we could help them host their fans on a cruise. We said “We’ve been waiting on your call.”  We also decided that we would no longer represent Sister Hazel as a management client, but help them find a new manager and continue being their partner on The Rock Boat.

2004 Narrowing our focus

We put The Rock Boat on sale in November of 2003 and it sold out within a few weeks. The hard work and patience had paid off. Gavin DeGraw joined us for this sailing with 20+ other artists.  Zac Brown performed on his first cruise with us after winning a Battle of the Bands contest in the Southeast. We were learning so much about producing a vacation rather than just a concert.  We didn’t have to vote anymore about whether to do it or not. The Rock Boat was here to stay, and we even ventured into producing a similar festival at a ski resort in Colorado, and called it The Rock Slope.

We couldn’t wait to announce the next Rock Boat.  We invited a lot of the same bands and Tonic jumped in on the fun.  The event grew a little, but it didn't sell out. It was a lot of risk and work, so we had a meeting afterwards to vote whether to keep it going or shut it down. In the end, we determined that we'd give it one more year.

2001 Getting the game plan together

During a weekly message board chat with the Sister Hazel street team, fans requested a weekend hang with the band since they had been working so hard to promote them. Andy relayed the message to the band and they simply said, “lets do it”. Andy didn't know where to start, but while traveling on a flight from New York to Atlanta, fate placed him in the seat next to a travel agent who suggested a cruise. So... we did it! We invited 400 fans on a cruise over Labor Day for what we dubbed, “Rock and Roll at Sea" .  We had no idea what we were in for, but it was a ton of fun. It was while we were stopped in Key West on that trip that Andy decided he wanted to build a business based on bringing fans and bands on vacation together. The cruise returned, and we soon set our sights on chartering an entire ship for the next year so we could make it a real festival.  We called Edwin McCain, Pat McGee, Cowboy Mouth and asked them to join us in 2002. If they could bring 400 fans each, we could fill an entire ship. We began getting prices from cruise lines to rent the ship on September 10th, 2001. The next day, the world changed and a cruise was the last thing we could think about. When we picked conversations back up with the cruise lines, prices had dropped significantly. We still had to come up with $750,000 to rent a ship, and none of us had the money.  So we built a website and asked 1,000 fans to put down a $99 deposit, and then took our plan to a local Atlanta businessmen who loaned us the money. We were on our way!

EARLY Let's get this party started

Andy Levine played in a band called Waterdog with Jett Beres and Ryan Newell from Sister Hazel. He wasn’t very good, but he booked all the gigs so they let him stay in the band.  When the band dissolved in the Spring 1994, Andy began promoting concerts for a local Gainesville club called Richenbachers. Sister Hazel was starting up and Andy had a great relationship with the band so they decided to work together.  In 1996, Sister Hazel released an independent album and sold 10,000 copies in 90 days, leading them to sign a record deal with Universal Records. From the beginning, Andy and the band invested heavily in connecting with their fans and organized an official street team to help spread the word about Sister Hazel. In 1997, the band earned a #1 song, “All For You”, which propelled the album to Platinum status. As the band toured, the street team, called “The Hazelnuts,” continued to grow.

The Cayamo Cruise: 13th Annual “Journey Through Song”

Kevin Wierzbicki

It’s unlikely that singer/songwriter Steve Poltz will ever be in the doghouse for forgetting his wedding anniversary. You don’t tend to forget things that happen on a cruise ship with a couple thousand friends wishing you well. Poltz got married aboard the Norwegian Cruise Line ship Pearl, at sea somewhere near the Bahamas during the 2020 sailing of the Cayamo Cruise .

cayamo cruise history

Poltz wasn’t the only one making precious memories during Cayamo, which took place Feb. 3-10. With a star-studded lineup that included Brian Wilson, Jeff Tweedy, Mavis Staples , Lake Street Dive and dozens of Americana artists, fans were thrilled with shows that ran virtually non-stop every day of the cruise. It all got started with a high energy set from Staples who played the ‘sail away’ show as the Pearl pulled out of Miami. With the city’s skyline illuminated in the background, Staples began her set with the Staples Singers classic “If You’re Ready (Come Go with Me)” before moving into “Who Told You That” and the rather surprising choice of cover songs, the Talking Heads cut “Slippery People.” In the mood to share the spotlight, Staples called Tweedy onto the stage for a duet on “Brothers and Sisters” and followed that treat up by bringing Lake Street Dive on for an extra-soulful version of “Build a Bridge.” A take on the Buffalo Springfield hit “For What It’s Worth” and the gospel chestnut “Wade in the Water” were also performed.

cayamo cruise history

It was special enough to have a chance to see acts like Anderson East, Soggy Bottom Boys, the Quebe Sisters, Deer Tick, Raul Malo, Buddy Miller and Ashley Monroe perform their sets, but every day Cayamo was also stacked with unique happenings. Besides playing two shows packed with Beach Boys hits, Brian Wilson and his fellow former Beach Boys Al Jardine and Blondie Chaplin participated in a Q&A session where they answered queries submitted by fans.

cayamo cruise history

Rodney Crowell and Allison Moorer hosted an “Art of Memoir” session where they discussed their difficult upbringings and their respective memoirs, performing a couple of songs relevant to the books along the way. In a separate show, Moorer reunited with the Mastersons, long-time members of her band that she had not performed with in years. And of course with Mavis Staples on board, there was a gospel show. Joining Mavis for the Sunday morning event were Dan Tyminski, the Wailin’ Jennys, the Quebe Sisters, Emily Scott Robinson and others. To top off the gospel show, singer Saundra Williams, of the Mavis Staples band, sung a song that she had written on the ship earlier in the day. And for enthusiastic early risers, Jim Lauderdale led numerous tai chi sessions.

cayamo cruise history

The 2020 sailing of Cayamo was the 13th incarnation of the festival, and amazingly Shawn Mullins has appeared on them all. Crowell, Lauderdale and Buddy Miller were also returning favorites with multiple sailings under their belts, but this year Cayamo also featured a large contingent of players enjoying their maiden voyages. Some of the first-timers were Madison Cunningham, Ike Reilly, Grayson Capps, Della Mae and Them Coulee Boys. Them Coulee Boys, a rocking bluegrass outfit from Wisconsin, and Della Mae, an all-female roots and bluegrass band out of Nashville, won their spots on the cruise by getting the most votes (along with Emily Scott Robinson) in Cayamo’s Soundcheck competition. Reilly and Capps showed their talent for storytelling during their shows, not only with their music but with funny anecdotes in between songs. Cunningham, a 22-year-old from Los Angeles, was one of the most talked about of the first-time Cayamoans. Performing with just a bass player and drummer, or sometimes alone with her electric guitar, Cunningham floored the crowd with a selection of her self-penned songs like the dreamy “Dry as Sand,” “Like You Do,” “No One Else to Blame” and an homage to her home town, “L.A.” Cunningham often recalls Joni Mitchell, both with her voice and phrasing and her intelligent lyrics.

cayamo cruise history

Cayamo’s motto is “A Journey Through Song,” and the slogan is quite fitting. The only time the musical fun slows down a bit is on the days that the ship pulls into port; on those days shows are only scheduled in the evening so that cruisers can spend the day ashore and not miss anything. The Pearl called at two Caribbean ports this time out; Antigua and St. Croix in the U.S. Virgin Islands. Many cruisers headed straight to the beach or shopping while others indulged in a variety of shore excursions; not surprisingly a visit to the Captain Morgan rum distillery in St. Croix was a popular adventure.

cayamo cruise history

Having been constructed especially for music cruises, the Pearl is the preferred ship for Cayamo. And while the Pearl accommodates live music in more than half a dozen venues, the ship also has all the amenities you’d expect from a cruise liner; pool and hot tubs, spa, casino, arcade, shopping and lots of places to eat and drink. Cayamo events took place seemingly in every nook and cranny as artist signings and merch sales, meet and greets, moonshine tasting, jam sessions and more kept Cayamoans busy.

Next year Cayamo takes place Feb. 20-27, 2021 aboard the Pearl as she sails from Miami to St. Thomas in the U.S. Virgin Islands and St. Kitts. And if you see Mr. and Mrs. Steve Poltz aboard, don’t forget to wish them a happy anniversary.

THROUGH THE LENS: The 2024 Cayamo Cruise Presented Roots Music at Its Finest

Lyle Lovett - Cayamo 2024 - Photo by Boom Baker

The 16th edition of the Cayamo cruise set sail from Miami on March 1 for a week of roots music at sea. Promoted by founder Sixthman as “A Journey Through Song,” the floating festival once again delivered on its promise of unforgettable sets and rare collaborative performances that can only occur on a self-contained ship. The comingling of the performers with one another, and with their fans, is not accidental nor merely encouraged, it’s a prerequisite.

With female artists almost in equal numbers with male artists, and Black and LGBTQ+ artists well represented, it was most likely the most diverse lineup in the festival’s history.

Cayamo was covered for Through the Lens by veteran cruisers Brenda Rosser and Boom Baker, with additional photos contributed by fellow ND photographers Brian Miller, Larry John Fowler, and Jean Van Devanter White.

Cayamo 2024 by Brenda Rosser

There is no one more revered or beloved in the roots music world than Buddy Miller. So it was fitting that he kicked things off before our Miami departure, telling passengers “It’s good to be home.” Backed by Phil Madeira, Brady Blade, and Dave Jacques, and with guests Steve Fishell, Shawn Colvin, The War and Treaty, and Eamon McLaughlin, Miller had us in tears of joy.

As we we sailed out of port, The Mavericks had those of us at Pool Deck up and dancing. Lyle Lovett brought a top-notch version of his acoustic group for two fast-paced shows. Returning artists The Lone Bellow, Lake Street Dive, The War and Treaty, Rodney Crowell, The Mavericks, Billy Bragg, and Shawn Mullins all had packed shows all week. In addition to her solo shows and guest spots with Buddy Miller, Lovett and others, Shawn Colvin hosted a show with Crowell, Rachael Price, and Bragg. Nikki Lane put on a tight and fun set under the blazing Caribbean sun, filled with leaps into the audience and some sass for a cruiser who had accidentally absconded with her Starbucks coffee the day before.

Susan Werner gave a master class in performance. She did “Barbed Wire Boys” in the audience and sang “Somewhere Over the Rainbow” on the Atrium staircase. During Shawn Mullins’ variety show, she went onto the wheelchair platform for the “L’amour Est un oiseau rebelle” aria from the opera Carmen , adding, “I have a degree in opera, but I never use it, it’s just a good party trick.” She finished by sitting on audience members’ laps, sliding down the row one lap at a time.

KT Tunstall kept things lively. Kelly Willis brought a tight backing band and a satchel of songs. Brandy Clark hosted a lively songwriters   in the round with Dom Flemons and Willis. Clark’s smooth solo shows featured songs from her recent self-titled release ( ND review ) . Clark also highlighted her band members’ duo project, Tattletale Saints, for several songs in her sets.

In addition to the Cayamo performing veterans, some newer artists delighted the crowds as well. Voted onto the ship via the cruise’s Soundcheck competition, Kyshona’s powerful vocals had audiences calling her a force of nature.

Abe Partridge had me laughing and crying at his Great Outdoors show on the sun-drenched back deck. Do not miss this unique songwriter and folk artist if he comes to your town.

Adeem the Artist was a revelation. I loved Adeem’s songs and engaging and humorous look at life. A highlight was their new single, “One Night Stand,” which they termed “the gay ’90s country bop song you didn’t know you needed.”

Gabe Lee’s songs reminded me of early Jason Isbell and John Prine but with his own distinct voice. Lee and his terrific backing band found many new fans.

A special note of appreciation for some MVP side players. who appeared on many stages, alongside many artists: Kelly Halloran (violin), Bridget Kearney (bass), Rachel Coats (bass) and Luciana Costa (dobro).

Cayamo 2024  by  Boom Baker

This was my 12th Cayamo cruise and the best music vacation ever. In addition to the music, there are plenty of auxiliary activities involved, including wine tasting and jewelry making, plus excursions when the ship docked at ports in Puerto Plata, Dominican Republic, and Oranjestad, Aruba. It was another week of music, sun, and camaraderie with like-minded souls.

There were many young artists that were able to play with their heroes and held their own, such as Gabe Lee (another artist voted onto the cruise via the Soundcheck competition), who with his band backed Raul Malo in his solo show. I especially enjoyed Jenny Owen Youngs’ performances, Sunny War’s maturity, and Alexa Rose’s relatable themes.

As good as the individual sets were, showcases helmed by The Bluegrass Situation   and Black Opry Revue were the twin peaks of this year’s cruise. With BGS, Mipso hosted a nightcap set with Hiss Golden Messenger, Dom Flemons, Lizzie No, Rachel Price, and Taylor Ashton. Black Opry, a loose association of Black artists in country, Americana, blues, folk and roots music, presented numerous sets that were among my favorite Cayamo moments. The highlight for me was a writers-in-the-round set with performances from Leyla McCalla, Dom Flemons, Jon Muq, Sunny War, SistaStrings, The Kentucky Gentlemen, Brady Blade, Ping Rose, and The War and Treaty. To say it was inspirational is an understatement.

To top it off, BGS & Black Opry paired up to host a late-night Live Artist Karaoke, where guitarist Ping Rose’s cover of Prince’s “Purple Rain” went through the stratosphere. So did my heart and soul.

When is Labor Day 2024? What to know about history of holiday and why it's celebrated

The calendar is getting ready to flip from August to September, which will soon mean the return of colorful leaves on trees, football season and bonfires. It also means Labor Day is approaching, meaning the unofficial end of summer.

During the three-day Labor Day weekend, many Americans will travel , shop for deals online and in-store and maybe sneak in one final visit to the beach or neighborhood pool.

However, the federal holiday is much more than just the summer's last hurrah. Observed each year on the first Monday of September, Labor Day is at heart a celebration of the hard-won achievements of America's labor movement and a recognition of what workers have contributed to the nation's prosperity.

Here's what to know about the Labor Day holiday, including when it is in 2024 and how it started.

When should you leave? The best and worst times for traffic over Labor Day Weekend 2024

When is Labor Day in 2024?

In 2024, Labor Day falls on Monday, Sept. 2.

Why do we celebrate Labor Day?

Rooted in the the labor movement of the 19th century, the holiday originated during a dismal time for America's workers, who faced long hours, low wages and unsafe conditions.

As labor unions and activists advocated and fought for better treatment for workers at the height of the Industrial Revolution, the idea arose to establish a day dedicated to celebrating the members of trade and labor unions,  according to History.com .

Even today, many Americans continue to celebrate Labor Day with parades and parties − festivities outlined in the first proposal for a holiday, according to the  U.S. Department of Labor . Since those early celebrations, Labor Day is now also marked with speeches by elected officials and community leaders who emphasize the economic and civic significance of the holiday.

How did Labor Day begin?

Two workers can make a solid claim to the title of Labor Day's official founder, according to the labor department.

Some records show that it was Peter J. McGuire, the co-founder of the American Federation of Labor, who in 1882 first suggested the idea for the holiday. However, recent research supports the contention that machinist Matthew Maguire proposed the holiday in 1882 while serving as secretary of the Central Labor Union in New York.

Regardless of which man deserves the credit, Labor Day soon became recognized by labor activists and individual states long before it became a federal holiday.

Organized by the Central Labor Union, the first Labor Day holiday was celebrated in 1882 in New York City, according to the labor department. On that day, 10,000 workers took unpaid time off to march from City Hall to Union Square, according to History.com.

New York was also the first state to introduce a bill recognizing Labor Day, but Oregon was the first to pass such a law in 1887, according to the labor department. By 1894, 32 states had adopted the holiday.

When did Labor Day first become federally recognized?

Labor Day became a national holiday in 1894 when President Grover Cleveland signed a law passed by Congress designating the first Monday in September a holiday for workers.

But the federal recognition was hard-won, having come after a wave of unrest among workers and labor activists brought the issue of workers' rights into public view.

In May that year, employees of the Pullman Palace Car Company in Chicago went on strike to protest wage cuts and the firing of union representatives, according to History.com. A month later, the government dispatched troops to Chicago to break up a boycott of the Pullman railway cars initiated by labor activist Eugene V. Debs, unleashing a wave of fatal riots.

Congress quickly passed an act making Labor Day a legal holiday in the District of Columbia and the territories. By June 28, Cleveland signed it into law.

Princess Cruises is launching its largest-ever Caribbean cruise season in 2026, sailing to all regions of the Caribbean for the first time in the company’s history.

Travelers will be able to choose from 90 different voyages during the summer of 2026 on two of its ships, the Regal Princess and the Caribbean Princess , according to the cruise line . The two ships will depart from Port Everglades in Ft. Lauderdale and Port Canaveral, respectively.

“Princess continues to expand access to our world-class premium experience now operating from eight North America homeports,” John Padgett, the president of Princess Cruises, said in a statement. “With ships now departing from both Central Florida and South Florida, it’s easier and more convenient than ever to set sail aboard the iconic Love Boat.”

From Ft. Lauderdale, travelers can venture out on 7-day Eastern or Western Caribbean sailings to destinations like San Juan, Cozumel, and Grand Turk, or cruise on 8-day Southern Caribbean sailings to ports like Aruba, Bonaire, and Curaçao. Or combine them on a 14-day trip to visit multiple regions.

From Port Canaveral, travelers can board a 7-day trip to the Eastern or Western Caribbean. These trips can also be combined into a 14-day sailing.

The company’s 2026 voyages are now available to book with Princess . As a bonus, travelers who are members of the company’s Captain’s Circle loyalty program will receive up to $200 in onboard credits when they book a summer 2026 cruise by Oct. 31. Members will receive $50 per person for voyages lasting seven to 10 days and $100 per person for combined 14-day voyages.

Travelers heading on a Princess Cruises trip have a more convenient way to get there thanks to the company’s partnership with high-speed rail company Brightline . As part of the “Rail & Sail" feature, Princess will provide a complimentary motorcoach service between either Brightline’s Orlando or Fort Lauderdale train stations and the embarkation terminal.

By Rob Dickens

It was my second Cayamo Cruise.

They (the organisers, Sixthman) – call it a “Journey Through Song”.  Sounds a little pretentious but on reflection it fits like a glove.

I had the spiritual awakening of Cayamo 2017.  I was blessed by wonderful music, the friendliest punters ever encountered and easy access to most everywhere musically.  I signed up again this year which is the eleventh edition of this regularly sold-out and much sought after (by artists and fans alike) event.  You can read my adventures last year HERE .  I am overlooking some of the background so I don’t repeat myself.  Only material changes are accounted for in this article.

Variation – The Boat

The boat is the Norwegian Pearl (not the Jade) which is pretty much the same, give or take.  Venue-wise, there is no Medusa Lounge which I thought was beset with low light, poor sight lines and barely-raised stage.  In its stead this year was The Atrium which is a two-level central point on the boat with reception desk, vivid decorations and bars – better all round.

Variation – Departure City

Rather than leave out of Tampa Florida, the Pearl set sail from New Orleans which was (and remains so at the time of writing) in the vice-like party grip of Mardi Gras.

Variation – The Second Port Stop-Over

Harvest Caye, Belize turned out to be a tiny island constructed for and owned by the cruise line, Norwegian.  Some quipped it was the land of “Make Belize”!

Variation – Two-Year Belt

Yep, no longer the minnow, and wearing the “Maiden Voyage” badge (literally!).  What’s in a badge anyway?  As any serial festival goer would attest – the first year is exploration with a little trepidation (particularly if doing it solo), the second year is have no fear ….hence, with shackles unleashed, it’s…er…full steam ahead.

Variation – The Line-Up

The critical ingredient to the new event is the line-up which probably, on paper to these eyes, surpassed that of 2017.  Here they all are, in publicised pecking order:

John Prine, Brandi Carlile (solo), Patty Griffin

Richard Thompson, Buddy Miller, Lee Ann Womack

Paul Thorn, Margo Price, Shawn Mullins

Jim Lauderdale, Gregory Alan Isakov, John Paul White

Hayes Carll, JD McPherson, Joe Purdy and Amber Rubarth

John Fullbright, Drew & Ellie Holcomb, The Band of Heathens

Aaron Lee Tasjan, Brent Cobb, The Cactus Blossoms

The McCrary Sisters, Joe Pug, Lindi Ortega

Traveller (Robert Ellis, Jonny Fritz, Cory Chisel), Humming House, BJ Barham

Kelsey Waldon, Steve Poltz, Max Gomez

Charley Crockett, Brian Wright, Michael McDermott

Devon Gilfillian, Lillie Mae, Scott Miller

The War and Treaty, Michael Logen, Sean McConnell

Caleb Caudle, Flagship Romance, Heart Society

Worthy of note is the Cayamo tradition of ballots from the Cayamo faithful to claim the last three spots on the boat.  It’s a nice touch.

Collaborations

A speciality of Cayamo is collaborations.  Born principally of having so much talent together with no place to leave and so they have more time than usual to relax, check out other performers and, most importantly for the punters, be available for hooking up with anyone who asks them.  Guesting for one song (or the whole set), agreeing to participate in a major tribute event or just hitching up for an in-the-round ….it makes this cruise experience unique, the extent of which I have not witnessed anywhere else.

Let’s start at the beginning, shall we?

See that band at the very bottom of the line-up list?   Heart Society had a preview show on the Pool Deck.  They have just released a highly impressive EP – Wake The Queen .  This husband and wife couple from Jackson Mississippi (Teneia Sanders-Eichelberger and Ben Eichelberger) belt our forceful blues and gospel oozing with passion and feeling.

A Celebration of John Prine  was the sail away show.  Shot glasses of Hurricanes were handed out as the ship was released from its chains and slowly moved down the Mississippi River towards the Gulf Of Mexico and ultimately the Caribbean Sea.  What a celebration it was, seventeen songs from Prine himself and a treasury of covers from  Brandi Carlile  (solo and with  Richard Thompson ),  Margo Price, Buddy Miller  (with  Patty Griffin  and  Lee Ann Womack ),  Gregory Alan Isakov, BJ Barham, Paul Thorn, Drew and Ellie Holcomb, John Paul White, Aaron Lee Tasjan, Joe Purdy, Max Gomez, Scott Miller, Hayes Carll , host  Jim Lauderdale  and Shawn Mullins led an all-star finale.  Stunning.

What better way to follow that than with a set from John Prine  himself.  Joined by his usual compatriots Jason Wilbur (guitar) and Dave Jacques (bass), the great Kenneth Blevins  on drums and Fats Kaplin on everything else.  Some Prine classics were impeccably and lovingly delivered, guest spots from Carlile, Purdy,  Dave Cobb  and, most enjoyably, two new songs from his Cobb-produced forthcoming release, the first new material for quite a few years.  As to the timing of the new album (between now and May), Prine quipped that he did not know when it would be out specifically “even though I own the record company!”

Amber Rubarth  and  Joe Purdy  presented their journey back to some classic folk tunes which form the foundation of the recent movie American Folk (in which they starred).  Gentle harmonies, interwoven finger picking and warm humour were to the fore.  You can read more about American Folk HERE .

Finally I get to see The Band of Heathens .  This Austin Texas outfit has dual front men and songwriters Ed Jurdi and Gordy Quist.  Effortless Americana and alt. country, rock and even more influences filled their set.  Extended versions of “Records In Bed” and “Don’t Call On Me” saw them at their jamming best.

Colorado’s  Gregory Alan Isakov  invited Texan  Hayes Carll  and Arkansas’s Joe Purdy for a wonderful hour ‘in-the-round’ session exchanging originals and covers in a delightful manner.

Paul Thorn ’s upcoming gospel album Don’t Let The Devil Ride is out in March but advance copies were available on the boat.  Thorn teamed up with Nashville’s McCrary Sisters for a special extended preview of the new songs in a lively hour entitled Paul Thorn’s Mission Temple Fireworks Revival.  Spiritually fulfilling and emotionally uplifting.

Brian Wright hails from Waco Texas but now is a Nashvillian and principally known as guitarist for Aaron Lee Tasjan .  He has his own prominent skill sets as I attested at last year’s AmericanaFest as my top live show of the year .  On this occasion, in The Atrium on Wednesday night, it was Aaron Lee’s band that he used (with ALT himself on guitar) and it was fever pitched with songs about tractor beams, the yesteryear reflections of “Patrick’s Crossing”, topics of selective hearing, “Mrs Rosenthal”, biting references to L.A. In “We Don’t Live There Anymore” and a cover of Don William’s sharp “If Hollywood Don’t Need You”.  Purdy guested and the closer, the cathartic “Glory Hallelujah” brought the house down with its striking ebbs and flows.

The Tribute to Tom Petty  on the outdoor Pool Deck was yet another collaboration that you would not easily be able to witness on shore.  The Band of Heathens were the house band, laying the foundation for various artists as they paid homage to the great Petty and his songs – Barham, The Holcombs, Wright, Price, Caudle, Robert Ellis, Steve Poltz, Kasey Waldon, Miller, Lillie Mae and Tasjan.  When Tasjan and Griffin were deep into their interpretation, the rain set in and everyone leapt for cover, including the instruments and speakers.  (The end of the tribute was rescheduled to another time which ,alas, I did not make it due to a schedule clash).

A couple of hours later,  Hayes Carll ’s set was blessed by the presence of the Heathens throughout, playing impeccably – never threatening to over-play their hand, just providing perfect support for their fellow Texan.  Carll announced that his new album would be out around the end of 2018 and some of the new material on show tonight sounded tantalising.  What a treat to see these great performers together.

Buddy and Jim’s Radio Show was actioned-packed -The McCrary’s, Mae and John Paul White .   The War and Treaty  were, however, the ones that blew everyone away, the duo being the major discovery and talk of the ship all week.  The two songs they performed and a little glimpse of their incredible personal stories were eye-opening indeed.  The emotion they bring to a full set would be breathtaking, judging from this snippet.  (The duo will attend next week’s Folk Alliance International in Kansas City Missouri, I will catch them and report back on this experience later).

The praises for Scott Miller ’s new album Ladies Auxiliary (produced by Anne McCue ) have already been made on this site (check our review HERE ).  During his Atrium set, only four songs from that new collection featured and little opportunity was taken to promote himself in a Merch-Store kind of way.  However, his self-promotion reaches brilliant proportions when he plays.  Sharp lyrics, memorable melodies and imagery and a quick satirical mind that takes some keeping up with.  Another joy.

Under the guise of Richard Thompson’s Unlikely Set , there was Thompson, swapping stories and songs with Ellis and  John Fullbright  for an hour.  The ad-lib Django Reinhardt jam involving all the players was just about the high point of the whole week.

Other high points included  Margo Price ’s two stirring wind-swept sets (what a golden voice and attitude that pricks up your ears), BJ Barham wowed the audience with his song-writing intensity and absorbing tales, South Georgia’s Brent Cobb ’s self-effacing honesty and strong songs, The Cactus Blossoms ’s modern take on classic harmonies a la  the Everly Brothers and Ricky Nelson – dreamy but with a tremolo punch, J D McPherson ’s set was a great rock and roll exhibit, Max Gomez  with his beat-up Martin guitar and classy accomplices had plenty of melody and lyrical attractions, as were the two new songs from  Patty Griffin , and finally Fulbright’s closing tribute to  Leon Russell.

Extra-Curricula

There were plenty of other stimulating activities to do for those that needed a break from the wall of performances, such as a leatherworks class with Jonny Fritz , guest jamming, guitar clinics, a screening of the aforementioned American Folk movie, open mic. showcases, songwriter workshops, tai chi with  Jim Lauderdale  and a songwriting podcast with  Joe Pug .

A Journey Through Song indeed.

As you can see, numerous highlights have not been hard to find.  A very strong and pretty diverse performer list made this easy.  There were quite a number of singer-songwriters on board and, at times, this author felt the need for a bigger, more forceful experience which admittedly was not that hard to find.  The Heathens and Fulbright’s band were two examples of where to get some rocking solace.

Again, as was the case on last year’s cruise, the collegial showcases provided an experience like no other.

A final word for the ‘Cayamo Family’.  Many have been on every Cayamo.  A significant group has been on consecutive trips and appear as though they might just be spiritually bolted onto the ship’s fixtures, equipped for every future voyage until their health or wallets say otherwise.

Music lovers them all.  Polite, friendly, happy for the music and overjoyed to renew acquaintances with an ever-growing circle of friends.  Those circles are powerful and addictive.

I still haven’t worked out what ‘Cayamo’ means.

I don’t know when I will be back on board (sooner, hopefully).

May the Cayamo Family sail together forever.

The official (Sixthman) etymology of Cayamo is Cay (island in Caribbean) and Amo (love). There is also a region in Cuba called Cayamo (which includes Guantánamo Bay)

Thanks for solving that one Ironbath

The incredible high energy performances of Steve Poltz deserve a major shout out.

Thanks Jack. Missed him except for the Petty tribute. Hope to catch him at Folk Alliance this week.

That’s one of the very few downsides to Cayamo, you can’t see and hear it all.

BGS Returns to Cayamo: Our Tips and Event Highlights for the Voyage

In a mere 10 days, Cayamo’s 16th edition will set sail from Miami for a week of Americana and roots music afloat on the beautiful Caribbean. Fans will spend the intimate week enjoying shows, collaborations, activities, and special events featuring the best musicians and artists in the roots music scene, all while porting in the Dominican Republic and Aruba. The voyage has been long sold out, but for the lucky folks who will be on board the Norwegian Pearl, BGS has a few tips, tricks, and event highlights you won’t want to miss from the jam packed Cayamo schedule.

If you aren’t a ticket holder for Cayamo 2024, join the waiting list – and it’s never too early to start planning next year! This one-of-a-kind roots music event is a truly special experience. Check out the list below for just a few reasons why Cayamo is such a hot ticket and why we’re so looking forward to being back on board with all of you in a few short days.

Buddy Miller’s Port Show Send-Off

Guitarist, producer, and Music City renaissance man Buddy Miller is no stranger to Cayamo, but this year he’s doing a very special port show to kick-off the entire voyage. Directly after the welcome toast on the pool deck on Friday, March 1, Miller will give the Norwegian Pearl a proper send off with the very first performance of the cruise. Catch his set from 3:45 to 5:00pm, with the all aboard call following at 5:30pm, then it’s bon voyage and goodbye to Miami!

As you can tell from this video shot from the audience on Cayamo 2019, you never know who is going to get up on stage with whom – we’re excited to see what special collaborations Miller puts on with other artists and pickers on the lineup.

The BGS Nightcap Hosted by Mipso

BGS Returns to Cayamo: Our Tips and Event Highlights for the Voyage

One of the reasons we  love Cayamo is getting to hang with and reconnect with so many of our friends! On Tuesday, March 5, at 11:00pm in the ship’s Stardust Theater we’ll reprise our popular Nightcap super jam show from last year, this time with our old pals Mipso as hosts. Speaking of special collaborations, there are bound to be many, many such collaborations at our Nightcap, so don’t miss it if you’ll be on board.

Cayamo Wine Tasting

Let’s continue with “hangs with friends” for another moment, because a bit earlier in the week, before our BGS Nightcap, Jacob Sharp of Mipso and our own executive director, Amy Reitnouer Jacobs, will be hosting a casual and friendly Cayamo Wine Tasting on Monday, March 4 from 1:00pm to 2:00pm in the ship’s Summer Palace. Sharp moonlights as a wine connoisseur and distributor when not making/playing music and our own Reitnouer Jacobs is known to love a good bottle, too. So if you’d like to sip and “nerd out” a bit about wine, soil, grapes, and winemaking, don’t miss the Cayamo Wine Tasting! It’s a perfect example of the unique types of events available to attendees. As the event description puts it, “Amy and Jacob’s friendship is based around sharing food, wine, and music that they see as emotionally poignant – and they’re excited to share that connection with you.”

BGS / Black Opry Artist Karaoke

BGS Returns to Cayamo: Our Tips and Event Highlights for the Voyage

Everyone loves karaoke and the teams at BGS and Black Opry certainly agree on that point! We couldn’t imagine a more fun cruise ship activity than getting together a bunch of the amazing artists on the Cayamo lineup to sing karaoke songs with the Black Opry house band backing them up. It’s sure to be a wild, hilarious, and enormously fun time. Catch the action in the Atrium on deck 7 on Wednesday, March 6 at 11:30pm. You never know who might show up to holler your favorite karaoke track!

Coffee & Conversation

Join the hosts of BGS’s podcast Basic Folk , Lizzie No and Cindy Howes, for a live-taped podcast conversation over coffee on Monday, March 4, at 9:00am. Their discussion, entitled, “Community/Commodity: Supporting and Sustaining Artists, Orgs, and Fans in the 21st Century,” will explore how the music industry, its artists, musicians, fans, and listeners can be active participants in creating a world where art isn’t just about consumption – and where music isn’t just a commodity. Bring your morning coffee or tea and enjoy a stimulating conversation that asks how events and organizations like Cayamo can be a model for more community-supported and community-engaging music in the future.

In today’s day and age, it seems like one must choose between capitalism or community… or is that really the case? Is there a way that these two can live side by side in the music industry? We’ll discuss all that and more in this very special live recording of FOLK DEBATE CLUB AT SEA! by Basic Folk.

Shows, Shows, Shows!

Of course, let’s not lose the forest for the trees, here. The most tantalizing part of Cayamo is indeed the limitless live shows, special concerts, and on-stage collaborations that the cruise is known for the world over. Boasting over 100 scheduled shows, there’s music for all tastes and from across the American roots spectrum. Below we’ll collect a handful we’re especially excited to catch on the ship.

We can’t wait to set sail with all of you on Cayamo 2024!

SistaStrings

You know them from their work with Peter Mulvey, Allison Russell, Brandi Carlile, Brandy Clark, and many more, but SistaStrings aren’t just a premier string duo working as side musicians with all your favs in Americana – they’re impeccable as a stand-alone group, too. We’ll be catching their set on Saturday, March 2, but we’ll also be keeping an eye out for them to pop up with many other performers on the lineup throughout the voyage.

Sunny War has long been a BGS favorite and she’s certainly one not-to-miss during Cayamo 2024. Her music is often touted for its combination of blues and punk, but even a fleeting exposure to her particular musical stylings reveals she is an artist all her own. There’s nobody out there who quite sounds like Sunny War.

If you’re looking for Good Country while on board Cayamo, look no further than Gabe Lee. A Nashville native, Lee offers a forward-looking, gritty, and real take on Music Row’s particular brand of country music. He’s an excellent songwriter and frontman who’s opened for most of your favorite roots artists and we can’t wait to see him shine on the ship.

OF COURSE we’re so excited Black Opry is on board Cayamo 2024. You won’t want to miss our karaoke event, but even more important is that you don’t miss their marquee event, the Black Opry Writer’s Round, which has been a tent pole of this collective’s work for the past several years. (That show is Monday, March 4, at 11:00am in the Stardust Theater.)

There’s a reason why Black Opry is showing up just about everywhere these days – and it’s not just Beyoncé going country. This collective centers the art and experiences of a group of folks who remain underserved and underrepresented in Nashville, on Music Row, and at events like these. And the artists they showcase are always of the highest quality.

In whatever iteration Black Opry will take during their many events on Cayamo, they will demonstrate yet again that these musicians, pickers, and singer-songwriters making American Roots music are joyfully carrying on an age-old tradition – while reminding all of us how none of these genres would exist without the vital contributions of Black folks and Black creators.

BGS Returns to Cayamo: Our Tips and Event Highlights for the Voyage

On a Cayamo cruise, it’s OK to rock the boat

A concert on the deck of the cruise ship Norwegian Pearl.

W hen fans sway to the music at a Cayamo concert, it’s not always because of a catchy beat.

Seats actually rock and roll on the Norwegian Pearl cruise ship as Grammy Award winners like John Prine and Steve Earle perform for passionate crowds at the annual music festival in the Caribbean. The stage can also shift along with the ocean waves.

“My legs are doing fine, but my voice is just getting its sea legs,’’ Prine told his opening-night audience after hitting a wobbly note.

Prine, Earle, and John Hiatt were the headliners at this year’s ninth Cayamo cruise, a seven-day celebration of singer-songwriters that took place the first week in February.

But the genre-spanning festival, which features folk, blues, and bluegrass as well as country, rock, and gospel, gives equal attention to talented but lesser-known artists with dedicated followings. This year, that group included John Fullbright, Shawn Mullins, David Bromberg, Shawn Colvin, Lucinda Williams, Buddy Miller, Chris Stapleton, Kacey Musgraves, and three husband-and-wife pairings: Larry Campbell and Teresa Williams; Jason Isbell and Amanda Shires; and Abner Ramirez and Amanda Sudano, a duo puckishly known as Johnnyswim.

Sixthman, the Atlanta-based creator of Cayamo, has also tailored musical cruises for fans of rock, country, blues, Elvis, Lynyrd Skynyrd, KISS, and Kid Rock. However, no cruise has a more devoted fanbase than Cayamo, most of whom are aging baby boomers who remember Woodstock more clearly than their Internet passwords.

Of the 2,000 passengers on this year’s voyage, more than half had been on at least two previous Cayamo cruises and 101 people had been on every trip since the first one in 2008. I sat next to one of those nine-timers, as they’re known in Cayamo circles, at Prine’s opening-night concert in the 920-seat Stardust Theater, the largest venue on the ship.

“It’s like a big family here,’’ said Sharon Meyer, a retired state government worker from Boulder, Colo. “It’s not like a regular cruise. People come mainly for the music, not just to eat and lie in the sun.’’

Many of the musicians are also Cayamo veterans.

Seventeen acts in this year’s lineup had performed on at least two other Cayamo cruises. Mullins, an Atlanta native best known for his 1998 hit “Lullaby,’’ is the reigning champ, having played on all nine. But Miller isn’t far behind. A producer and performer who has worked with Johnny Cash, Levon Helm, Emmylou Harris, and Willie Nelson, Miller has missed only one Cayamo outing — and that was because he had a heart attack a week before the 2011 cruise that led to triple-bypass surgery.

“Some people thought that was a lousy excuse,’’ he said with a laugh one night in the ship’s casino.

For musicians who spend more time on the road than long-haul truck drivers, Cayamo offers a relaxing week of camaraderie and collaboration with fellow performers they rarely see the rest of the year. Guest appearances at Cayamo concerts are as common as seasickness jokes.

“It’s a chance to see a lot of friends and people you admire,’’ said Campbell, a multi-instrumentalist who spent eight years touring with Bob Dylan’s band. “We’re musicians, but we’re also fans.’’

My wife and I signed up for Cayamo at the urging of longtime friends, a Miami couple who share similar musical tastes. We never had any desire to go on a cruise until our friends, who are six-time Cayamo cruisers, convinced us that we would be spending most of our time listening to music instead of pigging out at the buffet tables, drinking funny-sounding cocktails, or slathering ourselves with suntan lotion.

They were right. You can attend concerts practically around-the-clock, starting most days around noon and stretching into the wee hours of the morning. We were usually too exhausted to stay up for the late-night shows, though I made it to a couple of midnight jam sessions where it seemed half the musicians on board showed up to play impromptu gigs as if they were hanging out in your living room.

Music gorging wasn’t the only activity on the ship. You could also bowl, swim, play basketball, gamble, or take tai chi and sand art classes. My wife did tai chi every morning because she thought the instructor was cute, while my extracurricular schedule consisted mostly of losing money at the poker tables.

We stayed in a comfortable stateroom with a queen-size bed, a desk, a bathroom, a small sitting area, and a sliding glass door that led to a private balcony, which we hardly ever used. Prices range from $1,315 per person for an interior room to $5,775 for the ultra-luxurious owner’s suite, which includes butler service for those too lazy to fetch their own food and drinks.

The prices included everything except soda, liquor, transportation to the departure port in Miami, excursion fees during stops in St. Maarten and Tortola, and a daily gratuity charge that ranged from $12.95 to $14.95 per person based on your type of room. We did brief tours of both islands, but many passengers preferred to stay on the boat and enjoy a quiet afternoon resting their ears for the next concert.

We heard few complaints on our cruise, and most of them were minor gripes about things like the occasionally fickle sound system and the thickness of the toilet paper.

“The toilet paper is so thin you couldn’t wipe a smile off your face,’’ Hiatt quipped.

Mike Lynch, Tech Mogul Acquitted of Fraud, Dies at 59

The British entrepreneur was found not guilty of fraud charges in the sale of his company to Hewlett-Packard. He was celebrating his acquittal when his yacht sank off the coast of Sicily.

Two men walking in suits, wearing ties, with trees behind them on a street.

By Michael J. de la Merced

Michael de la Merced reported on Mike Lynch’s career and legal battles over the course of 13 years across two continents.

Mike Lynch , a British software mogul who was once celebrated as a top technology leader — only to spend more than a decade defending himself against accusations that he orchestrated one of the biggest frauds in Silicon Valley history — died on Monday after his yacht sank off the coast of Sicily . He was 59.

An official in the Italian city of Palermo confirmed on Thursday that Mr. Lynch’s body had been recovered by divers.

Twelve guests and 10 crew members were onboard the yacht, the Bayesian, when it went down during a violent storm. Mr. Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, was rescued, along with nine crew members and five other passengers. Seven bodies have been recovered, including one thought to be that of Mr. Lynch’s daughter, Hannah Lynch.

Mr. Lynch’s death came two months after he was acquitted in federal court in San Francisco of criminal fraud charges, tied to the $11 billion sale of his company, Autonomy, to Hewlett-Packard in 2011. The takeover, widely regarded among investors as one of the worst deals in history , led HP to accuse Mr. Lynch of deception.

Prosecutors in the United States charged Mr. Lynch with more than a dozen counts of fraud and conspiracy related to the deal, with a potential sentence running to about two decades in prison.

On the day in 2023 that a British judge found him liable for civil fraud in the matter, the British government — despite numerous appeals by Mr. Lynch — approved his extradition to the United States. He was confined to a townhouse in San Francisco under 24-hour surveillance, on his own dime. During his house arrest, his mother, Dolores, and his brother, Richard, died.

The accusations sullied the reputation of Mr. Lynch, who was known at one point as Britain’s Bill Gates.

Michael Richard Lynch was born on June 16, 1965, to Michael and Dolores Lynch, working-class immigrants from Ireland, and grew up outside London. He attended private school on a scholarship and graduated from Cambridge before founding Autonomy in 1996. The company helped clients analyze unstructured information to unearth hidden insights about their businesses.

By 2011, Autonomy had become one of Britain’s most prominent technology companies, with its home base sometimes called “Silicon Fen” — a name derived from its location at the southern tip of the Fenland, a marshy area in eastern England.

Mr. Lynch became a celebrity in British tech circles. He was a member of the Royal Society, one of the country’s top scientific associations; an adviser to David Cameron, the prime minister at the time; and a member of the BBC’s board.

Autonomy drew the attention of HP, which had sought to transform its fortunes by buying a high-powered software company, and which eventually paid 60 percent over the British company’s market value. But investors and analysts opposed the deal, and HP wrote down the value of the transaction by $8.8 billion. HP fired the chief executive who led the deal and, soon after, Mr. Lynch himself.

Meg Whitman, the former eBay leader who took over HP, accused Mr. Lynch and his lieutenants of “serious accounting improprieties” that misled her company over the state of Autonomy’s business.

But Mr. Lynch — armed with the hundreds of millions that he collected from Autonomy’s sale — hired an army of lawyers to argue that HP had been aware of the company’s practices. His team also said that Mr. Lynch had largely delegated the company’s day-to-day financial operations.

Mr. Lynch’s trial began in San Francisco in March. It stretched out over three months and involved reams of often dense internal documents. After two days of deliberations, a jury found Mr. Lynch and Stephen Chamberlain, a former Autonomy vice president of finance who faced similar charges, not guilty on all counts. (Mr. Chamberlain was fatally struck by a car on Saturday while out for a run, his lawyer, Gary S. Lincenberg, said Monday in an emailed statement.)

After the verdict, Mr. Lynch said in a statement, “I am looking forward to returning to the U.K. and getting back to what I love most: my family and innovating in my field.” He later returned to his homes, in London and Suffolk.

While defending himself against the HP accusations, Mr. Lynch became a venture capitalist, founding Invoke Capital to invest in companies including the cybersecurity provider Darktrace.

More recently, he had begun to focus on artificial intelligence research, including ways the technology could help those with hearing difficulties.

His survivors include his wife and another daughter, Esme.

Kirsten Noyes contributed research.

Cayamo Cruise to Sail in 2022 With Punch Brothers, Emmylou Harris, Dawes

By Joseph Hudak

Joseph Hudak

After being dry-docked by the pandemic, the Cayamo Cruise is returning to the water in 2022. The concert-at-sea company Sixthman announced Cayamo’s lineup on Wednesday, a robust schedule with Punch Brothers , Emmylou Harris , and Grace Potter among the headliners.

Dawes , the Mavericks , Richard Thompson, Indigo Girls, and Ruthie Foster are also on the cruise, set for March 18th through 25th. This year’s theme is “A Journey Through Song.” Other artists include the Jayhawks, Kathleen Edwards, Shawn Mullins, John Paul White, the Secret Sisters, Sierra Hull, Allison Russell, Brittney Spencer, Ida Mae, and Tré Burt.

Cayamo will also pay tribute to the memory of John Prine, who died in April 2020 from Covid-19. Members of Prine’s band, along with the songwriter’s son Tommy Prine, will perform various sets under the banner “Souvenirs: Songs of John Prine.”

This marks the 14th installment of Cayamo, which first launched in 2008. The 2022 cruise sails from Miami to St. Thomas and St. Kitts. Presale packages are available at cayamo.com .

The Covid crisis sidelined the concert cruise industry since the start of the pandemic in early 2020, canceling cruises by artists like Kiss, Melissa Etheridge, and Kesha. In January, Sixthman announced the return of Outlaw Country Cruise , which, like Cayamo, will sail in 2022.

How do I book during the pre-sale?

After you sign up for the pre-sale you will receive your booking information via email. It will include an Earliest Booking Time (EBT).

At or after your EBT, go to cayamo.com/booknow . Once you sign in, your time will be verified and you'll be able to begin the booking process. You can also book over the phone at 877-379-9175.

LET'S TALK PROFILES! If your traveling companion needs a Sixthman profile, they can create one here or you can create one for them while booking.

If they already have a Sixthman profile, ask them to add you as an Approved Lead Guest in their account here . Once that is done, you'll be able to add them as a guest in your stateroom while booking. Hooray!

Anyone who has traveled with Sixthman previously or signed up for the Cayamo Pre-Sale has a profile and will not need to create one.

For forgotten login credentials, recover them here ; you can also contact us and we will be happy to look them up for you (try our live chat feature or contact us ).

Please Note: Being a part of the pre-sale does not guarantee that staterooms will be left for purchase when it’s your time to book. Booking times are attached to a single Sixthman profile and are non-transferable.

Will the artists be on board the whole time?

Our artists are excited to join you on board for the whole event. However, there may be some cases where they must join us during the trip or depart early due to schedule or family commitments.

How are currencies going to work?

Cayamo is sold in US Dollars and all charges incurred prior to sailing will be charged as USD. Currency conversion shown on the website is for example purposes only. All pre-sailing payments will be processed as USD and non-USD accounts are subject to your bank’s exchange rate at the time of each transaction and are also subject to any foreign transaction fees of your bank.

All onboard charges will be listed and charged in US Dollars and non-USD accounts are subject to your bank’s exchange rate at the time of each transaction and are also subject to any foreign transaction fees of your bank.

Can I attend if I am pregnant or just had a baby?

Norwegian will make every effort to accommodate you, providing you have not entered the 24th week of pregnancy when the cruise ends. Please include your cruise details in an email to the Access Desk  or [email protected] with a medical certificate establishing your due date prior to the cruise.

Infants under six months of age are not eligible for travel on Norwegian ships.

What is the process for bringing and storing breast milk on board?   After you have received your Norwegian Cruise Line reservation number (approximately 4-6 weeks prior to sailing) please reach out to the   Access Desk   and they will make note on your boarding pass to allow you to bring breast milk through security upon embarkation. For storing breast milk on board, you can request to have your mini-fridge emptied out in advance with the Access Desk or with your cabin steward on board. For cabins without a mini-fridge, you can request for breast milk to be stored by your cabin steward on board or for an ice bucket to be provided for the room.

What are my breast feeding options while in port?   While there are no designated breastfeeding areas while in port, please see a staff member for recommendations. Additionally, all guests are able to easily exit and board the ship at their leisure to access cabins while we are docked in port.

What service charges should I expect to see on board?

A fixed service charge will be added to your onboard spending account in the amount of $20.00* per person per day for Interiors, Ocean Views, Balconies, and Club Balcony Suites and $25.00* per person per day for Suites.

The reason there's a fixed service charge is an important one: the ship crew is encouraged to work together as a team. Staff members including restaurant staff, stateroom stewards and behind-the-scenes support staff are compensated by a combination of salary and incentive programs that your service charge supports.

Additionally, a 20% auto-service charge will be applied for some other onboard services and experiences. These include, but are not limited to, beverage purchases (alcohol and non-alcoholic as well as ALL beverage packages), specialty dining packages, alcohol tastings, and spa and salon services.

While you are welcome to extend additional gratuities at your discretion, these minimum service charges are agreed to be paid by you upon booking your stateroom.  Should your concerns not be met with satisfaction you can adjust the charges.

*Prices subject to change.

What happens once the staterooms you have allotted for sale as First Available are sold out?

Prior to 30 days before sailing (January 29, 2025) , any newly available staterooms will be released weekly on Fridays. At 11am ET on Fridays First Available staterooms will become available to anyone with an Earliest Booking Time (EBT) for the event. At 1pm ET, any staterooms remaining available become available to the general public. Stateroom availability depends on how many First Available Staterooms have been assigned that week; some weeks there may be no new staterooms available, while other weeks there may be several new staterooms available.

Beginning 30 days prior to sailing (January 29, 2025) , any newly available cabins will be released daily at 1pm ET.

Sign up for our email newsletter and text updates to stay informed of event updates. Once we have fulfilled all committed First Available bookings to a stateroom, all periodically released staterooms will be available on a first come, first served basis.

What is the First Available guarantee? What happens if I book a First Available Stateroom and do not get placed in a stateroom by 30 days prior to sailing?

Our goal is to accommodate 99% of our First Available bookings.

If we are unable to assign you to a stateroom by 30 days prior to sailing (January 29, 2025), you earn a $1,000 future Sixthman event credit and have two options:

  • You can notify us to process your full refund plus receive a $1,000 future Sixthman event credit (valid for 3 years). Any purchased travel protection would be included in the refund.
  • If you are willing to accept a stateroom less than 30 days prior to the festival, we can continue to try to find a stateroom for you. When we place you in a stateroom, your $1,000 future Sixthman event credit will be automatically applied to your booking. If we are unable to place you in a stateroom before sailing we will automatically process your full refund and issue your $1,000 future Sixthman event credit (valid for 3 years).

Additionally, anyone we aren't able to assign to a stateroom will be prioritized for next year's  pre-sale (registration required) and will be assigned a booking time after guests who sail  but before prior year alumni (if any) and before new guests.

Please note: we recommend booking refundable travel (airfare, hotels, etc.) in the event you are unable to sail - Sixthman does not provide refunds for external purchases.

What options are available to book in this process and what is the cost associated?

Pending availability, you may book a First Available Interior, First Available Oceanview or First Available Balcony stateroom.

How do you determine how many First Available Staterooms to sell?

We utilize historical cancellation data from all our festivals to predict how many staterooms will become available prior to sailing. Life happens and sometimes our guests have to cancel. Plus, while we never intentionally hold staterooms back to release later, sometimes we need fewer staterooms for production/talent/staff than originally planned, allowing us to offer those to guests.

What will my final cost be for a First Available Stateroom?

First Available Staterooms are set to the maximum price for a room of that stateroom type. You will be placed in the first available stateroom that matches the category you booked. Should your assigned stateroom be priced lower than the First Available price, you will be refunded the difference. You will ultimately only pay the price of the stateroom you are assigned.

When will I know my stateroom number?

You will be assigned to a specific stateroom by 30 days prior to the festival’s embarkation date (January 29, 2025) or be eligible for a $1,000 future Sixthman event credit.

When will I receive my Norwegian reservation number?

All guests receive reservation numbers approximately 4-6 weeks prior to the festival’s embarkation date. Should you be placed into a specific stateroom after this time frame, you can anticipate receiving your reservation number approximately 10 days after your stateroom is assigned.

What is the cancellation policy for First Available Staterooms? What if I change my mind and want to remove myself from my first available reservation?

All reservations, including First Available reservations, are non-refundable. Please review our cancellation policy . If you are unsure about your ability to attend the festival, we recommend you delay booking a first available stateroom until you are certain you can attend.

What happens with the cost of my non-refundable travel if I am not placed in a stateroom prior to sailing?

Sixthman does not provide refunds for external purchases, therefore we recommend you book refundable travel. Please read our “What is the First Available guarantee” FAQ for further details.

How do payments work for my reservation?

All standard payment options will be available to First Available Staterooms bookings. Review our payment options here .

How long is my $1,000 Sixthman Future Event Credit valid?

Your Sixthman Future Event Credit will expire three years from the date of issue.

I am interested in a Suite. Why is this not a First Available option?

If any Suites become available, they will be offered to booked guests through our desired upgrade list. Once you are booked in a stateroom, you may contact us to join the desired upgrade list to be notified if a Suite becomes available. This means you may book a First Available Balcony stateroom and request to be on the desired upgrade list; in this case you may be automatically placed in a Balcony stateroom or offered a Suite (which, if you decline, will keep you in line for a Balcony stateroom assignment).

Do you fulfill First Available Staterooms before you accommodate the desired upgrade list?

First Available Staterooms are true stateroom bookings and as such are prioritized over the desired upgrade list. Once all First Available Staterooms have been placed, we will accommodate as many people from the Desired Upgrade List as possible. Note that Club Balcony Suites and Suites are not offered in First Available so any staterooms openings for those types are offered out via the Desired Upgrade List before being released for sale.

Once I book a First Available stateroom do I get approval over which room I am placed into?

No. You will be automatically assigned into the next available stateroom that matches the room type that you purchased.

Am I able to transfer to another festival after booking my First Available reservation?

Should you wish to transfer your reservation to another festival, you would follow the standard transfer guidelines in place for the festival you are currently booked on.

What is the payment schedule?

Enroll in Automatic Monthly Billing and customize your own payment schedule! See the details .

If you decide not to do automatic monthly billing, this manual payment plan allows guests to make installment payments on their cruise over time. The date that you place your reservation will dictate your deposit amount, after which you would be required to make any future payments according to the schedule. To make a payment on an existing reservation, please sign in to your account .

Payment Schedule

  • Another 25% is due on July 30th, 2024
  • Another 25% is due on September 30th, 2024
  • Remaining 100% is due on November 30th, 2024

Single occupancy staterooms require twice the above amounts. Past due payments are subject to a $35 late fee. See the Terms and Conditions for full details.

What if I want to book a single occupancy stateroom?

Guests traveling by themselves in their own stateroom are responsible for the double-occupancy rate of the stateroom (the double rate times two). Single occupancy staterooms will be charged Taxes and Fees for only one guest, and will receive a discount of $199.00 off the second cruise fare.

How do I make a payment?

To make a payment, booked guests can sign in to their Sixthman account and click 'Make a Payment' next to their reservation. Any named guest on a reservation can submit an online payment.

Payments can also be made via phone by calling Sixthman at 877-379-9175.

How do I purchase cruise or travel protection?

You may purchase travel protection while placing your reservation online or by calling Sixthman Guest Services at 1-877-379-9175 after your reservation has been placed. Insurance is sold per person and based of the amount you'd like covered (minimum coverage is the per person cost of the cabin plus all taxes and fees). You may also call Sixthman to request additional coverage for other non-cruise travel, such as airfare and deposits on ground or hotel.

For a complete list of rates and coverage details please visit www.sixthman.net/protection . Please note that the CFAR benefit (CANCEL FOR ANY REASON) is in addition to the standard policy and allows a refund of up to 50% of the non-refundable Trip Cost for reservations that are canceled without a covered reason up until 48 hours prior to sailing. This benefit must be purchased within 21 days of trip purchase.

Can each roommate make their own payments?

The Lead Guest on the reservation is responsible for making sure minimum payments are met. However, each guest can sign in (or call in) individually to make their own payment for their share of the cabin with their own credit card information. When making the reservation, the Lead Guest can pay for only their portion of the minimum initial deposit, but the reservation must be brought current within 72 hours. Within this time frame, other guests can make their initial payments. The Lead Guest is responsible for making sure the reservation is current within 72 hours or will risk cancellation.

Can I make changes to my booking?

Only Lead Guests can request to change or remove existing guests, or to upgrade to a higher-priced category.  Downgrading your cabin to a cabin of lesser value is not allowed. The Lead Guest must request these changes by phone or email.

Because the Lead Guest owns the reservation, any changes to this guest are subject to a Lead Guest change fee of $299.  No lead guest changes or transfers are permitted during the pre-sale or after November 30, 2024.  Lead Guest changes are also not permitted after an event sells out, except to guests who were named in the reservation prior to the sell out.  Permitted changes incur a $299 Lead Guest change fee.

ALL names must be received by November 30, 2024.  Each reservation is allowed one free name change prior to November 30, 2024.  Additional changes prior to that date are subject to a $50 administrative fee per change.

Any changes, including adding unnamed guests made after November 30, 2024, but more than one week before the cruise are $75 per change. Any changes, including adding unnamed guests made within a week of the cruise are $100 per change.

How do I add a guest to my stateroom?

If you're the lead guest with an existing reservation you can add a guest online. First, your guest needs a Sixthman username, and needs to give you permission to add them to your stateroom.

Provide your guest with your Sixthman username, and have them create a Sixthman profile here , or sign in to their existing profile. In the Guest Permissions section have them add you to their Approved Lead Guests list.

Once they're done, you can sign in to your profile and they'll appear in Your Authorized Guests list. Now, go to your current reservation and add them in the Personal Information section.

What if I miss a payment?

One week after missing a scheduled payment date, a late fee of $35 is added to the reservation.

Three weeks after missing a scheduled payment date, a final notice of impending cancellation is sent, and the reservation may be cancelled by Sixthman within 7 days.

If you are unable to make a payment as scheduled, please contact Sixthman PRIOR to the payment due date.  In extreme circumstances, alternate payment schedules may be arranged.  Alternate payment schedules are solely at the discretion of Sixthman.  Defaulting on alternate payment arrangements will result in immediate cancellation of your reservation.

Gift cards must be redeemed at least 14 days prior to sailing and cannot be redeemed on board.  Be sure to read the FAQs and the terms and conditions at sixthman.net/giftcard for full details!

What are the age requirements for Cayamo?

Failure to produce this letter at embarkation may result in boarding being denied, with no refund of cruise fare provided.

Infants sailing onboard a Norwegian vessel must be at least six months of age at time of sailing .

Note: Two people under the age of 21 may travel together in the same stateroom if they are a married couple and provide proof of marriage to a Norwegian representative at the pier before embarkation.

How will admission work in the Stardust Theater?

Shows in the Stardust Theater will be general admission with a reserved area for Priority Tickets for select shows. Each guest will receive Priority Tickets for a reserved seat for several performances in the Stardust Theater based on their show preferences. When it is time to rank the Stardust shows and select your seating preferences we will email all guests.

Where is the designated reserved Priority Ticket area in the Stardust Theater? Does it change per show?

Take a look! Priority Tickets are reserved seats located in rows A-S in the lower orchestra center through the upper orchestra center. Pending popularity of the show (how many guests ranked it) the reserved ticketed seats might fluctuate a few rows – meaning it might only extend to Row O in some shows leaving P, Q, R, S available for general admission guests. Our ushers will communicate that to you in the theater. We will only clear the Priority Ticket area after each performance for the next show's ticket holders.

cayamo cruise history

How are Priority Tickets Assigned?

All guests will receive multiple priority tickets, and alumni will receive additional ticket(s) based on sailing history.

The process :  Guests eligible for each round are sorted according to the date their Cayamo cabin was booked, and, one at a time, are assigned a ticket for their highest ranked available* show.  If their highest ranked show is full we try their next highest ranked show until we have successfully assigned that guest a ticket.  Once the guest who booked first has a ticket, we move on to the guest who booked second.  *Once 316 people have been assigned a bonus ticket for a single show, that show is full.

Once all guests have been assigned their Priority Ticket shows, guests are assigned into the Priority Ticket seats shown here .  Seats are assigned as follows:

For each Priority Ticket show, all guests assigned to the show are sorted according to the date and time their Cayamo cabin was booked, and, one at a time, are assigned a seat for the show. Whether you are a new guest or a returning alumni, it is important to know that seats are filled from house right to house left beginning with Row A. Cabinmates who are assigned to the same show are seated next to each other, unless they have requested different customizations for tickets (i.e. if one doesn't want farther back than Row M and the other doesn't want farther back than Row S).

The number of Priority Tickets guests receive is based on alumni status, and are as follows:

  • 1-2 Voyages = 2 Priority Ticket Show assignments
  • 3-7 Voyages = 3 Priority Ticket Show assignments
  • 8-16 Voyages = 4 Priority Ticket Show assignments

Will I be seated with my traveling companion(s)?

Guests booked on the same reservation who make the same priority seating show selections, checked artists, and same answers to seat preferences will be seated together. The best way to ensure this is to have one guest make all the selections and click the red button with “Save Rankings for all Guests” when submitting your choices.

I require wheelchair accessible or mobility impaired seating. Will you ensure that I also have access to priority show selections?

We will hold a certain number of Priority Ticket spots on the wheelchair accessible platform for each show in Stardust based upon demand to ensure that you get to see the shows you want! Additional accessible seating will be available for general admission on a first come, first served basis.

Will artists billed as headliners in previous years be playing the same number of shows?

Yes, generally each artist performs 2-3 shows throughout Cayamo with the possibility of some of the performances being collaborative shows. Anticipate that headliner talent will play both the Pool Deck and Stardust Theater.

Can Sixthman book my hotel, airfare, rental car or shuttles?

We realize that your vacation begins the moment you book your cabins and we wish we could look after your entire journey.  However, the only part of your trip we can truly impact is the part that happens when you step on the ship.  In years past, we have tried to manage the experience you have with hotels, airlines, rental cars, shuttles and we just can’t get them to care like we do. We will see you on the ship and put our energy into making it the greatest vacation you have ever had!

How do I get to the Port of Miami?

For directions check out our Port page .

Checking your bags at the port

At the port you will hand over any luggage you wish to check to the porters, and your bags will be delivered directly to your cabin.  DON'T PACK YOUR DOCUMENTATION, MEDICATION OR OTHER IMPORTANT ITEMS IN ANY BAG YOU PLAN TO CHECK, AS BAGS MAY TAKE UNTIL 8PM TO ARRIVE TO YOUR CABINS.

Each piece of checked luggage must have a luggage tag listing your name, ship and cabin number. Luggage tags can be printed prior to the cruise during registration for e-documents and additional tags may be obtained at port from the curbside porters.  * Please note that curbside porters are not employees of Norwegian and it’s customary to tip them $1 per bag .

DO NOT PACK YOUR PASSPORT, TRAVEL DOCUMENTS OR ALCOHOL IN YOUR CHECKED BAG.

Do I need a passport? What type of identification will I need to board the ship?

Remember, at time of booking, you acknowledged that the laws that regulate the  necessary travel documentation  are subject to change and that it is your responsibility to be aware of what is required for travel.

View the latest information from Norwegian at ncl.com/traveldocs .  Below are recommendations based on the current U.S. government policy. This information could be updated without notice.

Please note that the name on your ticket must match the name on your passport or you will need to provide an original copy of proof of change of name (marriage license, etc).

U.S. Citizens

Sixthman highly recommends all guests travel with a passport valid for at least six months beyond completion of travel. Although a passport is not required for U.S. citizens taking cruises that begin & end in the same U.S. port, traveling with a passport enhances your disembarkation experience, as delays may be expected upon your return to the U.S. if you do not have one. Additionally, passports make it easier for you to fly from the U.S. to a foreign port should you miss your scheduled port of embarkation, or need to fly back to the U.S. for emergency reasons. If you do not have a passport you can use an original or state certified copy of a Birth Certificate as listed below.

The Western Hemisphere Travel Initiative (WHTI) allows U.S. citizens (including children) sailing on cruises that begin and end in the same U.S. port to travel with one of the following WHTI compliant document:

  • Valid U.S. Passport
  • Passport Card
  • Enhanced Driver's License (EDL)
  • Original or state certified copy of a Birth Certificate   PLUS a government-issued photo ID*
  • Certificate of Naturalization   PLUS a government-issued photo ID*
  • Trusted Traveler Program Membership Card, e.g., Nexus Card, Sentri Card or Fast Card PLUS a government-issued photo ID*

*A government-issued photo ID is also required for all guests, including children 16 and over. For more information, a complete list of WHTI-compliant documents or to obtain a passport application, visit travel.state.gov .

For more information or to obtain a passport application, visit travel.state.gov .

Non-U.S. Citizens

All guests must carry a valid passport, and if necessary, a multiple entry visa is required for entry into the United States (i.e. B-2 Visitors Visa), or a visa waiver. Please be sure to check with the proper agencies and authorities (such as your local immigration office) before you sail because we can't board you without the proper documents. Travelers from the 38 Visa Waiver Program (VWP) countries* must have a machine-readable passport to enter the U.S. without a visa. All VWP travelers are required to obtain an electronic travel authorization prior to boarding a carrier to travel by air or sea to the U.S. under the VWP .

*ANDORRA, AUSTRALIA, AUSTRIA, BELGIUM, BRUNEI, CHILE, CZECH REPUBLIC, DENMARK, ESTONIA, FINLAND, FRANCE, GERMANY, GREECE, HUNGARY, ICELAND, IRELAND, ITALY, JAPAN, LATVIA, LIECHTENSTEIN, LITHUANIA, LUXEMBOURG, MALTA, MONACO, NETHERLANDS, NEW ZEALAND, NORWAY, PORTUGAL, REP. If you are not a US Citizen and are uncertain that you have the correct documentation please call US Immigrations at 1-800-375-5283 to be sure your identification will be satisfactory.

Alien Residents of the United States holding an Alien Registration Card (ARC or "Green Card") (Form I-551) may travel to Canada, Mexico, Bermuda (see Visa Restrictions on Bermuda) and the Caribbean with just their valid ARC and Proof of Identity. However, it is recommended that these guests also carry their passports from their country of citizenship if available. In some instances, ARC holders may still be required to have sailing permits and/or visas to enter countries Norwegian Cruise Line visits in these areas. Please note that travel anywhere else in the world requires a valid passport from the country you are a citizen of and subsequently subjects you to any documentation, visa and health requirements of all countries visited.

What if I do not have proper identification?

There is no Jedi Mind Trick around this, you MUST have proper identification to be permitted to board the ship. If you arrive at port without proper identification, while Sixthman will assist you in contacting the appropriate agencies, we cannot guarantee that you can successfully attain proper identification from the port, and this may result in being denied boarding without compensation. And this makes us sad.

How can I stay up to date with what's happening on board during the festival?

Prior to sailing, you'll be able to see the schedule here . There are several resources on Norwegian Gem to help you navigate your festival experience. Once we set sail, we may encounter some changes due to weather or logistical variations. Therefore the following onboard resources will your best source for staying up to date.

The #1 best way to stay in the loop is to utilize Sixthman.net/today . There you can always find the MOST up-to-date information (such as schedule and onboard announcements). Simply connect to the ship's Wi-Fi (NCL_Internet_Gem) once on board. You do not need to purchase an internet package for the site to work.

Other sources of info include: TV screens, TVs with touch screens, daily announcements, onboard newsletter delivered to your stateroom, and the Cruise Norwegian app.

You may submit questions regarding the event via Sixthman.net/ask during your cruise. The Sixthman team will reply in a prompt manner.

There is a service wheel outside of your stateroom door, which can be turned to display “Welcome”, “Make Up Cabin”, “Turn Down Cabin” and “Do Not Disturb”. This will help you communicate with your cabin steward as well as allow for onboard deliveries. When the service wheel is set to “Do Not Disturb” you may miss a delivery.

Will I get to try all of the curated dining on board?

There's a multitude of curated dining opportunities on board, and unfortunately, it's not possible for  each cabin  to dine at all six pop-up restaurants during our four-night sailing, try everything on each pop-up restaurants menu, and/or partake in all of the curated spotlights available on the buffet throughout the day. There's just too much food!

T here is a potential for shared seating with other Chefs Making Waves cruisers based on party size and table availability, and   each cabin cannot  dine at all six pop-up restaurants during our four-night sailing. While menus will offer various course options keeping in mind common allergies/restrictions, it is not guaranteed that there will always be a course option at the pop-up restaurants that fit your unique dietary restrictions/allergy needs.

Disclaimer : While onboard dining is included, optional elevated culinary experiences and specialty premium spirit tastings could be offered for additional fees.

What is the Sixthman Zero Tolerance Policy?

Cayamo enforces a strict policy against the use or possession of contraband, paraphernalia, illegal controlled substances, narcotics (including marijuana), other THC products (gummies, candies), and any type of weapons or firearms. This policy always applies in all locations, including the port, ship, and the entire duration of your sailing.

You will be traveling internationally and are subject to federal laws. Please be aware that even items considered legal under state jurisdiction may be prohibited. The importation or return of certain substances can be a local, state, and federal crime, and individuals found in possession of contraband is at risk of arrest and will be removed from the passenger manifest, permanently prohibiting them from sailing with Cayamo . No refunds will be issued in such cases.

You will encounter multiple contraband-detecting K9 units and law enforcement resources in the port, on the gangways of the ship during embarkation and disembarkation, and on the private island. Like airports, your expectation of privacy is limited, and you may be subject to search for any reason.

If you have federally legal prescription medications with you, they must be stored in their original prescription containers with the name on the prescription matching the name of the person in possession of the container. Additionally, carry ONLY the amount of medication required for the duration of your stay with us.

Cayamo travels internationally to a sovereign nation with its own distinct laws and constitution. You will NOT have the same constitutional protections that we enjoy in the U.S. or wherever you call home.

Anyone who violates the Zero Tolerance Policy or disturbs the peace and safety of the ship will be detained or arrested and discharged at the next stop without a refund.

What is the Norwegian Cruise Line Guest Conduct Policy?

Refer to Norwegian's website for the full policy

SAFETY AND SECURITY

Safety and security are everyone’s responsibility. Should anyone become aware of unsafe or possibly illegal behavior during their cruise, they should immediately report this to the ship’s Security Staff or other ship management. This may be done through ship’s telephone system by dialing 911 or by seeking the assistance of a crew member.

GUEST CONDUCT

GUEST AND CREW INTERACTION Our crew members are friendly, outgoing and helpful, and they will do their very best to make your vacation as enjoyable as possible. Please do not misinterpret their friendliness. Crew members are prohibited from engaging in physical relationships with guests. Crew members are not permitted to socialize with guests beyond their professional duties, and are not permitted to be in guest staterooms, except for the performance of their shipboard duties. Guests are expected to respect these policies and are similarly prohibited from engaging in physical relationships with crew members. Guests are not permitted in any restricted or crew area of the ship, including crew staterooms and corridors.

VERBALLY ABUSIVE OR OFFENSIVE LANGUAGE Verbally abusive or offensive language directed toward anyone, to include guests, crew members, governmental officials, or others is not permitted.

INAPPROPRIATE OR ABUSIVE BEHAVIOR Inappropriate or abusive behavior including uninvited physical contact, solicitation, harassment, vandalism, theft, violence, use of fake/false identification, underage drinking (see alcohol section below), providing alcohol to those under the allowed age (see alcohol section below), possession of illegal substances/items or any other illegal or offensive conduct is not permitted.

UNSAFE BEHAVIOR Sitting, standing, laying or climbing on, over or across any exterior or interior railings or other protective barriers, or tampering with ship’s equipment, facilities or systems designed for guest safety is not permitted. Guests may not enter or access any area that is restricted and/or for the use of crew members. Any other unsafe behavior, including failure to follow security instructions, is not permitted.

DISCOURTEOUS OR DISRUPTIVE BEHAVIOR Pool, deck and theater chairs may not be reserved. Topless sunbathing is not permitted. Boom boxes or loud radios are not permitted. Roller blades, roller skates, skateboards, hoverboards, scooters, surfboards, bicycles, and similar items may not be utilized on-board; except for mobility aids related to special needs, as approved by the ship’s management.

SMOKING As the health and well-being of our guests and crew is of the utmost importance, Norwegian Cruise Line instituted changes to its smoking policy for all sailings after November 1, 2014 . The specific changes prohibit smoking on stateroom balconies and limit smoking in the casino to players. On Norwegian Getaway and Norwegian Breakaway, smoking on The Waterfront will be permitted on the starboard side, except by the outdoor dining areas. Public areas throughout all our ships are smoke-free. If you smoke regular or electronic cigarettes, you can do so in designated areas only. For more information on our smoking policy please go here.

CURFEWS Ship’s management reserves the right to enact and enforce curfews on an individual, group, or ship-wide basis, if in the sole judgment of the ship’s Captain, such steps become necessary to ensure guest or crew safety. Children under the age of 17 are not allowed unaccompanied by an adult after 1:00 am.

DISEMBARKING FROM A SHIP Parents or guardians must not permit any guest in their care under age 18 from leaving a ship in any port without responsible adult supervision.

PARENTAL AND GUARDIAN RESPONSIBILITY For purposes of this Guest Conduct Policy, a minor is defined as anyone under the age of 18. A young adult is defined as anyone ages 18, 19 or 20. Parents and guardians are responsible for the behavior and appropriate supervision of their accompanying minor(s) and young adult(s) throughout their vacation. This obligation applies during transfers to and from ships, inside terminals, while on board, at our ports of call, during shore excursions and at our private destinations. This responsibility applies at all times, regardless of whether the parents and guardians are physically in the company of their minor(s) and young adult(s).

ALCOHOL Norwegian Cruise Line guests are expected to be responsible for their actions at all times, including during transfers to and from ships, inside terminals, while onboard, at our ports of call, during shore excursions and at our private destinations. Consuming alcohol to excess impairs one’s judgment and reduces one’s ability to recognize and avoid potentially dangerous situations. Guests who choose to consume alcohol must do so responsibly. The ship’s staff may refuse to serve alcoholic beverages to any guest who does not consume alcohol responsibly. Ship’s personnel may request verification of a guest’s age to verify they are of age to consume alcohol pursuant to this policy. Any guest that violates this alcohol policy, will be considered for disciplinary action pursuant to the “Consequences Section” of this Guest Conduct Policy, and may lose their privileges to use the disco or other areas or facilities of the ship or maybe required to disembark the vessel.

Guests are not permitted to bring alcoholic (except wine & a corkage fee will be charged) beverages onboard and Security reserves the right to inspect containers (water bottles, soda bottles, mouthwash, luggage, etc.) at any time. Alcoholic beverages that are purchased from onboard shops or in ports-of-call (which must be presented to security upon re-boarding), will be held until the last night of the cruise. The Freestyle Daily will list the location and time for pick up. Guests who are under the permitted drinking age will not have alcohol returned to them.

The minimum drinking age for all alcoholic beverages on Norwegian Cruise Line ships is 21. Guests who are 18 - 20 years of age can purchase and consume beer or wine when the ship is in international waters (3 miles out of US territorial waters). The age modification does not apply for Alaska and Hawaii sailings. The parent or legal guardian must be onboard the sailing with the young adult and present themselves at the Front Desk so they can sign the form allowing the consumption of beer and wine only. A notarized Parent Consent Form or any other document allowing for temporary guardianship for the purposes of the sailing only will not be accepted.

For purposes of complying with the minimum drinking age requirements, a guest’s age is established upon embarkation (beginning of the cruise). If a guest celebrates their birthday during the cruise, and thereby becomes of age to consume alcohol, the guest may thereafter ask the Guest Services Manager to modify ship’s records to permit their consumption of alcohol during the remainder of the cruise. The guest will be required to appear at Guest Services to present a government issued form of identification to permit verification of their age.

On cruises embarking in a country where the legal drinking age is lower than 21 and where a young adult (age 18, 19 or 20) is not traveling with a parent or legal guardian, they will generally not be permitted to consume alcohol. There may be exceptions made to this restriction in areas of the world where local laws require and Norwegian Cruise Line concurs. Details on such exceptions can be obtained from the Guest Services Desk. No guest under age 18 may possess or consume alcohol at any time, while onboard or at our private destinations. No guest under age 21 may possess or consume alcohol at our private destinations. Any guest who goes ashore and consumes alcohol (whether under the supervision of a parent/guardian or not) is responsible for ensuring they consume responsibly and retain their ability to recognize and avoid potentially dangerous situations when they return to the ship. Parents/guardians are reminded they are responsible for the actions of their child/young adult at all times while on a Norwegian Cruise Line cruise.

Guests who violate any alcohol policy, including but not limited to underage drinking; providing alcohol to minors or young adults; possessing, concealing or attempting to conceal alcoholic items in their luggage, when boarding, or while on board; engaging in alcohol drinking games; or failing to consume alcohol responsibly, will be considered for discipline under the provisions of this policy.

PROHIBITED ITEMS

For the most up-to-date list, please check Norwegian's website .

DRONES (Game Flying Device) Guests are not permitted to bring drones on board for safety of other guests, as well as the welfare of the vessel.

ITEMS WITH HEATING ELEMENTS OR OPEN FLAMES Certain items that generate heat or produce an open flame are not permitted onboard. This includes clothing irons, hotplates, candles, incense and any other item that may create a fire hazard. Curling irons and hair dryers are allowed and may require a converter.

DRUGS OR OTHER ILLEGAL SUBSTANCES No illegal drugs or other illegal substances including but not limited to medical marijuana are allowed onboard or may be utilized during a Norwegian Cruise Line vacation, including during transfers to and from ships, inside terminals, during shore excursions or at our private island. Illegal drugs or substances will be confiscated and appropriate action taken, which may include removal from the ship and involvement of appropriate authorities. In addition, foreign governments at Norwegian Cruise Line ports of call have strict laws that address drug possession. Guests found in violation of such laws are subject to arrest and prosecution by the foreign jurisdiction (and perhaps United States or other authorities as well) and may be prevented from re-boarding the ship.

WEAPONS, EXPLOSIVES OR OTHER DANGEROUS ITEMS No weapon, explosive, or other item that presents a risk of harm to persons or property, are permitted onboard. They will be taken by ship’s Security and appropriate action taken. Guests are not allowed to bring their own scuba gears onboard such as oxygen tanks, diving knives, spears, etc.

HEALTH AND ENVIRONMENT

HAND WASHING Guests are strongly encouraged to wash their hands with soap and hot water after using the restroom and before eating or handling food. Medical experts say this is one of the best ways to prevent illnesses from starting or spreading.

ILLNESSES AND ISOLATION OF GUESTS Norwegian Cruise Line follows practices and maintains policies that seek to prevent illnesses from affecting our guests. One of the best ways to prevent the spread of contagious illnesses like gastrointestinal viruses, colds and flu is to wash your hands thoroughly for at least 20 seconds with soap and hot water after using the restroom and again before eating anything. In the event you experience symptoms that indicate a gastrointestinal illness, such as diarrhea or vomiting, or know of someone experiencing these symptoms, you must advise the medical staff immediately. In addition, some gastrointestinal illnesses remain contagious up to 72 hours or more after symptoms subside; therefore, if you or someone you know experienced such an illness just prior to your cruise, you must immediately notify the ship’s medical staff. This will permit the crew to take steps to reduce the chance that your illness will spread to others on the ship. Failure to immediately report a contagious illness to the ship’s medical staff, or to accurately describe its onset, greatly increases the likelihood the illness will spread to others and is a violation of this Guest Conduct Policy. In the event of a contagious illness, the ship’s crew will take steps to curtail its spread to other guests, including if necessary, steps set forth in the Consequences Section on next page.

CONSEQUENCES

FAILURE TO ACT IN ACCORDANCE WITH THIS POLICY MAY RESULT IN:

  • Intervention by Security, other management personnel or law enforcement
  • Removal of certain onboard privileges, which may include being detained, quarantined or confinement
  • Confiscation of illegal/contraband/prohibited items (may be turned over to law enforcement authorities) and used for prosecution
  • Denial of boarding on the current or any future Norwegian Cruise Line cruise vacation
  • Reporting of incidents to government and law enforcement authorities for follow-on legal action
  • Removal from ship at the next port-of-call. Guests removed from a Norwegian Cruise Line ship pursuant to this policy, are responsible. Documentation requirements for re-entry into the guest’s home country are also the responsibility of the guest.

Where can I find out more about accommodations for guests with special needs?

Sixthman and Norwegian Cruise Lines are committed to ensuring that EVERY guest onboard has access to the moments that makes life ROCK!

Prior to booking, check out our ship’s accessibility details . To discuss any questions you may have regarding this information or your specific needs, you may contact the Sixthman Guest Services team prior to booking, and remember to discuss your needs with the reservationist at the time of booking.

Your information and requirements will be sent to Norwegian’s Access Desk approximately 60 days prior to sailing. If your needs require more advanced notice, the Sixthman team will notify Norwegian accordingly. Approximately 4-6 weeks before sailing, via email, you will receive your Norwegian reservation number and additional information regarding how you may contact the Access Desk directly for any additional questions you have before embarkation.

What accommodations are available for guests with medical food allergies and diabetes?

At time of booking, please discuss your needs with the Sixthman Guest Services team by contacting us . We can arrange to have no sugar, low sodium meals, and gluten free items for guests with those specific medical dietary restrictions upon request. Refrigerators are available in all staterooms for storing insulin.

Are wheelchairs, scooters or mobility assistive devices available for boarding and once on the ship?

Once on board, wheelchairs are available for guest use ONLY in the event of a medical emergency. However, if you require mobility assistance for embarkation and/or debarkation, these items are available upon request when you arrive at the port. If you require the use of a mobility assistive device throughout your vacation, we ask that you travel with your own, or rent one from a third party company that works with the cruise line such as Scootaround . You may rent equipment once you receive your Norwegian reservation number 4-6 weeks prior to sailing.

Scootaround Phone: (toll-free) 1-888-441-7575 scootaround.com

If you have any food allergy or a dietary requirement that requires Kosher meals or gluten free food products, please advise Sixthman at the time of booking. Norwegian cannot guarantee Kosher meal or gluten free food product requests made within 45 days of sail date.

Can vegan diets be accommodated?

The ship offers vegetarian options, but not specifically vegan options in the main dining rooms. You will be able to navigate your dietary needs by speaking with the restaurant manager on board (during the first day of sailing) in order to discuss what dishes may be prepared for you. The buffets, of course, will contain many fresh food items that are vegan (vegetables, fruits, beans), but for any cooked dishes, you will need to inquire if they had been prepared with butter vs. oil, etc. You may also bring with you pre-packaged snack items to supplement your dietary needs, but no fresh food items, as they are prohibited by US Customs.

Sign language interpreting services may be provided for deaf guests upon request. A request for sign language interpreting should be made at the time of booking, but no later than 90 days prior to sailing. Requests are subject to a number of considerations, including but not limited to, the availability of interpreters and cabin space. A request for an interpreter with less than 90 days’ notice may still be granted but cannot be guaranteed.

Please visit Norwegian Cruise Line’s Accessibility Assistance page for complete details.

By request, an embarkation day meeting with a staff member who will see to your accessibility needs during the cruise and/or vessel orientation tour is available for blind or low vision guests. Service animals are allowed on board but must be arranged through the Access Desk prior to the cruise.

Are service dogs permitted to travel?

Yes. Norwegian Cruise Line accepts service dogs that are trained to perform a specific task. A service dog may be needed for many different conditions, which would be acceptable under the American with Disabilities Act (ADA) guidelines. In accordance with the ADA, Norwegian Cruise Line does NOT accept “Emotional Support” dogs as service dogs; they CANNOT sail.

Please visit Norwegian Cruise Line’s Accessibility Assistance page for complete details about what travel documentation is required for service animals to travel.

What if I encounter the need for medical attention during my trip?

Things To Do

Travel | travel: here’s how you can have a ball on a baltic cruise.

cayamo cruise history

How different is the Baltic compared to other cruise regions? For one thing, its season runs from April to September, not year-round like the Caribbean, Mediterranean and Mexican Riviera. Also, an itinerary set in the Baltic Sea emphasizes city life over wildlife. Nature takes a backseat to culture, history, language and the arts. If you want to see Northern Europe’s flora and fauna, book a voyage to the Norwegian fjords instead. And as for wildlife of a human kind, there’s not much of that, either. It’s a Baltic cruise, not a booze cruise.

But if your idea of wild is docking on a picturesque island to enjoy a day exploring a medieval village graced by the cutest-ever restaurant with a menu that’s only in Swedish — oh, and lovingly nestled between the ruins of two 13th-century churches —then by all means go stone-cold crazy on a Baltic cruise.

Thirty-six ships representing 20 English-speaking cruise lines can take you there over six magical months next year. Not all 2025 itineraries include a stop in Visby, the well-preserved Hanseatic town and UNESCO World Heritage Site referred to above, but this is the Baltic we’re talking about — the place oozes enchantment.

Duration-wise, next year’s offerings range from four six-day sails from Oslo to Stockholm aboard MSC Cruise’s 3,223-passenger Poesia ( msccruises.com ) to an 83-day roundtripper out of New York on Silversea’s 392-capacity Silver Shadow ( silversea.com ), debarking on June 11.

Eleven nights is considered the sweet spot in the Baltic, making the sweetest sail in 2025 a Windstar Cruise ( windstarcruises.com ) for its loaded itinerary. With no sea days and a couple of overnighters between June 29 and July 10, the all-suite, 312-passenger Star Legend will visit at least one port in Sweden, Finland, Estonia, Latvia, Lithuania, Poland, Germany and Denmark. That’s eight of the nine countries bounding the Baltic. The outlier is Russia, which hasn’t welcomed a major cruise line since the attack on Ukraine in February 2022.

The loss of culture-rich St. Petersburg on Baltic itineraries is an economic gain for Latvia’s Riga, Lithuania’s Klaipeda and other ports that were considered secondary stops before the invasion. Albeit bittersweet, veteran Baltic cruisers may appreciate taking the cobbled roads less traveled.

Exploring world capitals

The Parliament House is an example of Stockholm's striking architecture. (Photo by David Dickstein)

With cruises strictly sailing in the Baltic Sea, Copenhagen and Stockholm are where the majority begin and end. A third world capital, Helsinki, is often nestled on the front or back end of the itinerary, while Estonia’s chief city of Tallinn usually fits somewhere near the halfway point of voyages of nine days or longer.

Worthy of a pre- or post-cruise overnight stay at minimum, Stockholm is the Swedish meatball of tourist meccas. Appetizing and authentic as a destination, hearty in its array of attractions, the city is full of flavor as well with a diverse population of nearly a million people spread across seven distinct districts. A hotel in the Slussenomradet neighborhood is a wise choice for its central location and metro station that serves as a hub of public transport for Stockholm ( visitstockholm.com ).

Slussen is also mere steps from trendy Sodermalm and Gamla Stan (Old Town), home of the must-see Royal Palace and Nobel Prize Museum, where a handwritten manuscript signed by Albert Einstein in 1922 is among the mind-blowing artifacts on display. Stromma runs a fleet of boats and busses that offer hour-long tours with English narration. If you’ve got the time, take the ferry to the island of Djurgarden. A museum dedicated to the most famous pop band ever to come out of Sweden is there — do we really have to say it’s ABBA? — along with the adrenaline-pumping Grona Lund amusement park and the less thrilling Royal National City Park.

Copenhagen ( visitcopenhagen.com ) is just as “wonderful” as the hit song from the 1952 film, “Hans Christian Andersen,” says. Bursting with unique history, architecture, food and scenery, Denmark’s capital deserves much more time than a cruise often provides. And as sure as Thumbelina is tiny, does this town love its native-son author. HCA’s influence is evident throughout the city, from the iconic harborside Little Mermaid statue, a head-scratching must-see if there ever was one, to his classic fairytales depicted on the “The Flying Trunk” ride at Tivoli Gardens ( tivoli.dk ), which, opened in 1843, is the third-oldest operating amusement park in the world. If Tivoli’s 114-year-old rollercoaster is too fast and furious for you, a touristy, but worthwhile boat ride through Nyhavn’s narrow and exciting canals will be more your speed. Central to all this is the stately Phoenix Copenhagen, and being the official hotel in town for several cruise lines, Windstar included, it’s a snap to be dropped off there with your luggage after an enjoyable three-hour post-cruise tour.

Helsinki's wellness culture extends to its cruise port. (Photo by David Dickstein)

The bustling city harbor of Helsinki has impressive architecture, a colorful open-air market, a couple of stunning churches, some world-class museums and history that goes back thousands of years. What it lacks is a bona fide must-see. If only there was a place that’s different and easy to get to. Cue Suomenlinna Island. Built during the Swedish era as a maritime fortress and naval base, this wonderful place appeals to lovers of culture and nature, and gives cruisers a chance to breathe, especially if there hasn’t been a sea day yet. Accessible only by ferry, the island attracts more locals than tourists, which world travelers know is a plus. Quaint museums, a supermarket and a scattering of cafes add to the experience, as does the magnificent views of Helsinki ( visitfinland.com ) at the beginning and end of each 15-minute leg.

Medieval Old Town in Tallinn has a fairytale quality. (Photo by David Dickstein)

Estonia’s capital city of Tallinn ( visittallinn.ee/eng ) has one of the best-preserved medieval town centers in Europe. So vibrant and chockablock with shops, restaurants and historical buildings, it’s not unusual for cruise passengers to spend their entire port time within this UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Discovering charming ports

Old-time hat making is demonstrated at a Turku crafts museum. (Photo by David Dickstein)

Turku is Finland’s No. 1 summer destination, but registers barely a blip as an international cruise port. And foreign passengers are the lesser for it. Finland’s oldest city — its founding dates back to 1229 — is a natural stop between Stockholm and Helsinki, but the former capital city doesn’t get the love it deserves. Windstar, Crystal and Regent Seven Seas have Turku ( en.visitturku.fi ) on the schedule this year and next, but a reason there aren’t more stems from the costly requirement of having pilots assist ships through the world’s largest archipelago. As local leaders work on a solution, this hamlet along the banks of the Aura River is winning visitors over with its medieval castle and cathedral (both still in use), a 157-year-old market hall (canned bear meat, anyone?), the open-air Luostarinmaki Handicrafts Museum (survivor of the Great Fire of 1827), and a foodie scene that just got more exciting with the opening of Eatery Alex 1917, Chef Richy Virahsawmy’s new gem on nearby Ruissalo Island. Michelin, take note.

When taken to a port city where World War II started and the Solidarity movement was established, setting the stage for the collapse of communism in Eastern Europe, one should expect a strong slate of shore excursions. Gdansk, Poland ( visitgdansk.com ) delivers with a tour of the city with narration focused on Solidarity history, and another to Stutthof, the last Nazi concentration camp liberated by the Allies. On the lighter side, most cruise ships offer courtesy shuttles to and from St. Mary’s Street, the city’s principal pedestrian promenade.

Wismar is a Hanseatic town rich in Gothic, Baroque and Renaissance architecture, and Warnemunde is a lovely seaside resort town, but these ports in northern Germany are often on a Baltic itinerary to serve as gateways to Berlin ( germany.travel/en ). Germany’s exciting capital is about three hours away by rail or bus, making getting there a long trek for just a few hours of sightseeing. Still, many cruisers happily do this despite an investment of 13 total hours and hundreds of euros. But when a cruise itinerary has the ship parking overnight, spending more on a roundtrip train ticket, hotel and tours is a no-brainer, especially for first-timers.

Berlin takes a week to do right, but 24 hours can be enough time to see most of the biggies: Brandenburg Gate, Checkpoint Charlie, surviving sections of the Berlin Wall, the observation deck of the 1,207-foot-high TV Tower, the Reichstag Building with its glass dome, Museum Island, a boat tour with Stern + Kreis, amazing restaurants and nightlife to match. So wunderbar. So is the Hotel Amano Grand Central that’s not only clean and quiet with rooms going for as low as $80, but it’s directly opposite Berlin’s Central Station. High-fived myself with that find.

A bloodless longsword battle breaks out at Visby's annual Medieval Week. (Photo by David Dickstein)

Which brings us to back to adorable and strollable Visby, a Baltic favorite on the scenic island of Gotland ( visitsweden.com ). Even when the annual medieval festival isn’t going on in August, a warm, village-like atmosphere welcomes cruisers with traditional Swedish hospitality. Walking, biking and motorcoach tours to the countryside may be prebooked through the ship, and a Hop on-Hop Off bus can be picked up dockside. Or simply explore this delightful destination on your own. Just make sure this love-at-first-sight thing doesn’t have you forgetting to make the all-aboard. Parting Visby is such sweet sorrow.
