Tour de France Stage 21: Tadej Pogačar wins third Tour de France title

Slovenia's Tadej Pogačar won the 2024 Tour de France with yet another commanding stage victory during Sunday’s time trial.

Pogačar is now the first man in the 21st century to win both the Giro D’Italia and Tour de France in the same season after winning six individual Tour stages along his way to the overall victory. The Slovenian won his third Tour de France following his victories in 2020 and 2021. He has now successfully reclaimed the title from rival Jonas Vingegaard , the 2022 and 2023 champion.

"I cannot describe how happy I am after two hard years in the Tour de France," Pogačar said after his victory. "This year everything (went) to perfection, I’m out of words.

"This is the first Grand Tour where I was totally confident every day," Pogačar added.

After three weeks of exhilarating competition between the sport’s greatest rivalry in Pogačar and Vingegaard, historic moments and over 2,000 miles of racing, this year’s final stage was historic as it switched Paris’ Champs-Élysées for the Promenade des Anglais. This year was the first time the finish line was not in or near Paris because the city is hosting the 2024 Paris Olympic Games .

The time trial included a 21-mile ride from Monaco to Nice, France, with rolling hills and an overall elevation gain of 695m − not a negligible figure but significantly less inclined than the recent mountainous stages. Pogačar led rivals Vingegaard and Remco Evenepoel through every checkpoint of today's time trial. This year was the first time since 1989 that the competition ended with a time trial.

Although Vingegaard did not achieve a coveted three-peat, his inspiring runner-up performance was an extraordinary feat considering he returned to competition after having suffered serious injuries that hospitalized him for 12 days in April.

Belgium's Remco Evenepoel rounded out the general classification podium following a third-place finish in today's time trial. This result is an outstanding achievement for the 24-year-old who made his Tour de France debut this year. Evenepoel also won the white jersey, awarded to the best young rider, with a commanding lead. He will surely be one to watch in the future.

Looking forward, Pogačar said he will now turn his focus to the World Road Championships in September, where he will take on reigning World Champion Mathieu van der Poel of the Netherlands.

"Van der Poel looks really good in the World Championships jersey, but I want to take it from him this year," Pogačar said. "We’ll see."

USA Today Sports provided live updates during the final stage of the Tour de France:

Here are the final general classification standings for the 2024 Tour de France:

Slovenia’s Tadej Pogačar wins the time trial and the 2024 Tour de France

Tadej Pogačar is your 2024 Tour de France Champion. Just when you thought Pogačar could not be any more dominant, the Slovenian beat rival Jonas Vingegaard and World Time Trial Champion Remco Evenopoel to win the final stage of the Tour de France and seal his general classification victory. The Slovenian is now the only person in the 21st century to win the Giro D’Italia and Tour de France in the same season.

Pogačar looks unstoppable

Pogačar is on the brink of victory having just passed through the third and final checkpoint over a minute faster than rival Vingegaard.

American Matteo Jorgenson overtakes Harold Tejada as Stage 21 leader

Jorgenson has improved upon Harold Tejada’s time to become the current leader of today’s time trial in 47 minutes and 32 seconds despite a minor crash along the route. The general classification riders are still on the course and are on track to beat Jorgenson's time.

Tadej Pogačar extends lead over Jonas Vingegaard and Remco Evenepoel

Pogačar passed through the second checkpoint 24 seconds ahead of Vingegaard and 51 seconds ahead of Evenepoel. The Slovenian is on track to win his sixth stage of the Tour on his way to officially winning his third Tour de France yellow jersey.

Tadej Pogačar establishes early lead over Jonas Vingegaard and Remco Evenepoel

Pogačar led the golden trio through the first checkpoint, reaching the mark seven seconds ahead of Vingegaard and 26 seconds ahead of Evenepoel. These margins are currently too slim to make a difference in the general classification standings.

Richard Carapaz caps off successful Tour de France with polka-dotted jersey win

Carapaz has finished the time trial within the time limit, concluding a successful Tour de France and officially securing the polka-dotted jersey, which recognizes the field’s best climber. He is the first Ecuadorian man to win this jersey.

Slovenia’s Tadej Pogaçar starts final stage looking to win his third Tour de France

Yellow jersey wearer Tadej Pogaçar of UAE Team Emirates has officially started the final stage of what is likely to be his third Tour de France victory. Pogaçar has had such a dominant Tour that he should win the general classification standings barring any disaster such as a serious fall.

Denmark’s Jonas Vingegaard begins

The 2022 and 2023 Tour de France Champion has started the time trial. The current runner-up in the yellow jersey standings, Vingegaard trails Pogaçar by over five minutes. Although only a catastrophe from Pogaçar could hand Vingegaard the win, the Dane has much to be proud of after returning to competition following serious injuries from a crash in April.

Remco Evenpoel is off!

Belgium’s Evenepoel of Soudal-QuickStep has started the time trial as the favorite to win today’s stage with the best time trial ability on paper. The white jersey wearer is the reigning World Time Trial Champion and edged out Tadej Pogačar to win the only other time trial of this Tour de France. Evenepoel is currently in third place in the general classification standings, approximately eight minutes behind lead Tadej Pogačar. Although he most likely will not be able to catch Pogačar or Vingegaard, he should be in a good position to defend his third-place podium position as well as his white jersey, which signifies the best young rider of the Tour.

Matteo Jorgenson falls

Jorgenson appeared to slip while zooming around a bend but promptly got up and resumed cycling. He appears to be okay.

Hometown hero Romain Bardet finishes his Tour de France

France’s Romain Bardet of Team dsm–firmenich PostNL has officially concluded what is expected to be his last Tour de France. The hometown favorite finished to resounding cheers to cap off one of the most successful French cycling careers of this generation. Although Bardet will finish outside of the top 10 in the general classification standings, Bardet got his storybook ending with a victory during the first stage of the Tour.

American Matteo Jorgenson starts time trial

Jorgenson , 25, has started the route from Monaco to Nice. He is the highest-ranked American on the general classification leaderboard, standing in eighth place after Stage 20 following a particularly successful second half of the Tour.

The first of the general classification leaders are off

Italy’s Giulio Ciccone of Lidl-Trek was the first of the top 10 general classification leaders to start the time trial. The race is heating up as the rest of the top contenders prepare to tackle the course.

Richard Carapaz sets off

Ecuador’s Richard Carapaz of EF Education–EasyPost has started the time trial. If he finishes within the time limit, he will officially become the first Ecuadorian to win the polka-dotted jersey that signifies the Tour’s best climber. He was already named the super-combative rider of the Tour earlier this morning.

Wout van Aert finishes an underwhelming Tour de France

Wout van Aert of Visma-Lease a Bike has finished his 2024 Tour de France with a time of 53 minutes and 38 seconds in the time trial, good for 74th place so far in today’s standings. The 29-year-old Belgian was the first of the realistic contenders for today’s stage win to set off. Van Aert has won nine individual Tour stages during his career, including two individual time trials, but did not come away with a stage victory this year despite several top-10 finishes.

American Neilson Powless finishes Tour de France with fourth-fastest time trial so far

Powless finished the time trial in 49 minutes and nine seconds, 55 seconds behind current leader Harold Tejada. He now sits in fourth place in today’s stage rankings with the best general classification riders, including American Matteo Jorgenson, still to come.

Harold Tejada overtakes Lenny Martinez in Stage 21 standings

Harold Tejada of Astana Qazaqstan has improved on Frenchman Lenny Martinez’s time to take a 10-second lead. The Colombian now leads today’s time trial standings with a mark of 48 minutes and 14 seconds. The field’s best general classification riders are still to come.

Mark Cavendish gives emotional interview

Cavendish spoke to the media after he finished the time trial.

"It was just about enjoying it," Cavendish said of today's stage. "There’s no pressure for me today, which is strange for a final stage of the Tour. I knew my family were waiting at the finish and I was just absorbing it. I think I got all the emotions out of the way yesterday and I could really just enjoy today."

Cavendish also confirmed that today’s stage was "likely" his last professional race and reflected on his career.

"I feel very lucky to have had the career I’ve had, to work with the people I have, to meet the people I have and be able to live the dream," Cavendish said. "You see the success, you see the photos of wins, videos of wins, but it’s rare people see everything that goes in behind, everything that makes it. It’s taught me a lot about myself, it’s taught me a lot about how to be a father, and that’s the biggest thing I take from the sport."

What is the green jersey in the Tour de France?

The green jersey is awarded to the best overall rider in the points classification. Points are awarded at stage finishes and intermediate sprints during stages, so the jersey usually designates the best overall sprinter of the Tour. Eritrea's Biniam Girmay was awarded the green jersey this year.

Why is the Tour de France not finishing in Paris?

The Tour de France will not finish in or near Paris for the first time in history because of the ongoing preparations for the 2024 Paris Olympic Games . Instead, the race will finish in the southeastern French city of Nice. The finish line is located at the Promenade des Anglais − Nice's version of Paris' Champs-Elysée, the traditional finish of the tour.

Read more about the historic decision here .

Biniam Girmay officially makes history as first Black green jersey winner

After finishing Stage 21 within the time limit, Biniam Girmay of Eritrea and Intermarché-Wanty is officially the first Black rider in history to win the points classification. Girmay has had a stellar Tour de France, establishing himself as the best sprinter of the field with his three stage victories and green jersey win, even after suffering injuries that required stitches during Stage 16 .

Jasper Philipsen finishes his Tour de France

Choosing to contest the stage with a road bike instead of a time trial bike, Belgium’s Jasper Philipsen has finished the time trial in 52 minutes and 55 seconds. After a disappointing start to the competition, Philipsen turned his fortunes around, winning three sprint stages , but ultimately lost his battle for the green jersey to Eritrea’s Biniam Girmay.

Mark Cavendish finishes final Tour de France

One of the greatest sprinters in history has officially said farewell to cycling’s most iconic competition. Great Britain’s Mark Cavendish, 39, crossed the Tour de France finish line for the final time in a time of 54 minutes and 38 seconds. The Brit was set to retire at the end of last season but returned for a final Tour de France after he crashed out of last year’s race. Cavendish finally got his fairytale ending to his inspiring career during this year’s Stage 5, where he sprinted to victory for a record-breaking 35th career Tour de France stage win. It’s safe to say Cavendish accomplished what he came for (and more).

Biniam Girmay has started!

Green jersey wearer Biniam Girmay of Eritrea is now on the course. Girmay has had a breakout performance during this year’s competition, picking up three stage wins with his fierce sprint finishes. Despite a crash during Stage 16 that left Girmay needing stitches, the Eritrean edged out Jasper Philipsen for the green jersey (points classification). All Girmay needs to do is complete the trial within the time limit and he will become the first Black rider in history to win the green jersey accolade.

Polka-dotted jersey wearer Richard Carapaz wins super-combative rider award

After votes from a jury and the public, Ecuador’s Richard Carapaz has been named the super-combative rider of this year’s Tour de France. Carapaz made history as the first Ecuadorian to win an individual Tour stage with his Stage 17 victory and the first to win the mountains classification after yesterday’s final group racing stage.

And they're off!

Italy's Davide Ballerini was the first to set off on the course, just ahead of his Astana Qazaqstan teammate Mark Cavendish, who is beginning his final Tour de France stage of his illustrious, record-breaking career.

Start times finalized

There will be a staggered start to the individual time trial with 90 seconds between each rider. The cyclists will start in reverse order of the general classification standings, with yellow jersey wearer Pogačar beginning the stage last at 12:45 p.m. ET. Italy's Davide Ballerini will be the first to start at 8:40 am ET.

Tadej Pogacar Returns to the Top, Winning the Tour de France

Pogacar won his third Tour, beating his rival Jonas Vingegaard by 6:17 after a final time trial victory in Nice on Sunday.

A cyclist in a yellow uniform and helmet holds his arms above his head.

By Victor Mather

When an athlete wins a championship two years in a row, but then slips to second the next two years, it’s fair to assume that he may be starting a downswing — that he is a cut below the new champion and that he will struggle to beat him in the years ahead.

But Tadej Pogacar of Slovenia turned the tables on his rival and the defending champion, Jonas Vingegaard of Denmark, this year in the Tour de France, completing a smashing victory on Sunday to take his third title.

Pogacar’s championship was confirmed in the final time trial from Monaco to Nice on Sunday. Setting off last among the Tour’s 141 surviving riders, crouched over his time trial bike — with its solid rear wheel for aerodynamics — Pogacar in the race leader’s yellow jersey rode with the confidence of a sure winner. He capped his stellar three-week run with another stage win, his sixth, finishing 1:03 ahead of Vingegaard to take the Tour by 6:17 overall.

“After two hard years in the Tour de France, always some mistakes,” Pogacar said. “This year — everything to perfection. I am super happy to win here.”

The location (Nice, not Paris) and the format (time trial, not flat stage) were unusual for a final stage, but Sunday turned out to be the same as almost every Tour finale: a coronation more than an actual contest.

Pogacar had led by 5 minutes 14 seconds going into the day, a lead that would have required an epic meltdown or total disaster of some kind to be overhauled.

Going into the weekend, after impressive day on impressive day in the mountains of France, Pogacar held a seemingly unassailable lead of 3 minutes 11 seconds. But there was always the chance he would melt down on the brutal Alpine climbs of the last two mountain stages. He did not, and instead extended his lead over Vingegaard, the winner of the previous two Tours.

On Friday, Pogacar attacked on a brief final climb with five miles to go and created a gap between him and Vingegaard. He then ran down Matteo Jorgenson of the United States, who had been up front for much of the day.

Leaving the field gasping behind him, Pogacar climbed to the ski station Isola 2000 and won the stage, his fourth of the race, and added almost two minutes to his overall lead.

Vingegaard, who was returning from broken ribs and a collarbone sustained in a crash in April, acknowledged afterward that the race was all but over, and on Saturday seemed to focus more on holding second place over Remco Evenepoel of Belgium. On the final mountain of the Tour, the Col de la Couillole, the two leaders eventually left Evenepoel behind.

Vingegaard set the tempo with Pogacar glued to him. With a half-mile left, they dropped the last challenger, Richard Carapaz of Ecuador, and high in the Alps the two best riders in the Tour raced to the finish line.

There the winner was Pogacar again, accelerating away in the last couple hundred yards, helped because Vingegaard was tired after leading for so long.

After Sunday’s time trial, Pogacar completed what is known as a double: winning the two biggest cycling tours, the Giro d’Italia and the Tour de France, in the same season. He is the first to complete a double since Marco Pantani in 1998.

Of his third Tour win, Pogacar said: “This is the first one I was totally confident every day. Even in the Giro I had one bad day — I won’t tell which one.”

Leaving aside Lance Armstrong, whose seven victories from 1999 to 2005 were stripped from him after revelations of drug use, the record for most victories in the Tour is five, held by four riders. Pogacar’s three tied him for sixth place.

Carapaz won the polka dot jersey as best climber, Evenepoel won the white jersey as best young rider and Biniam Girmay of Eritrea, who had earlier in the race become the first Black African to win a Tour stage, won the green jersey as best sprinter.

Either Pogacar or Vingegaard has now won the last five yellow jerseys, and they have finished one-two the past four years. At ages 25 and 27, there is no reason to think their battles won’t continue for some years to come.

Tour de France 2024 Route stage 20: Nice - Col de la Couillole

Tour de France 2024

The penultimate stage of Le Tour has Paris-Nice written all over it. Not only does the race start in Nice, but also three of the four mountains served as finishes in recent editions of the Race to the Sun.

In 2018 it was Simon Yates who won the Paris-Nice stage to the Col de la Colmiane. Primoz Roglic and Daniel Felipe Martínez turned out on top on Col de Turini, respectively in 2022 and 2019. And in Tadej Pogacar showcased his skills on the Col de la Couillole. By the way, all climbs – with the exception of the Couillole – were tackled from another side than will be the case on the Tour.

So the Tour goes ‘Paris-Nice’ and it does so in stile. The race kicks into gear at the Place Masséna in Nice. The riders rolll out in northerly direction and enter the first climbs after 15 kilometres. The Col de Braus is a 10 kilometres effort at 6.6%.

Straight after the descent the road goes back up again. The Col de Turini is the longest – 20.7 kilometres – climb of the day and it leads to the highest point at 1,608 metres above sea level. The average gradient on the Turini sits at 5.7%.

The riders fly through the midway marker on descent and back in the valley, in Roquebillière, the next climb begins at shallow gradients. This part of the Col de la Colmiane is not classified as a climb, but it does go up. Only the last 7.5 kilometres – at 7.1% – are KOM classified, but if you count from bottom to top the Colmiane is roughly 20 kilometres long and averaging almost 5%.

Following the downhill to Saint-Sauveur-sur-Tinée the finish climb kicks in. The Col de la Couillole is a 15.7 kilometres long ascent with an average gradient of 7.1%. The section some 6 kilometres before the finish was important in the 2023 edition of Paris-Nice. Following an initial move by Chris Harper the big three of that race took the reins. Tadej Pogacar, David Gaudu and Jonas Vingegaard distanced the field before Pogacar sprinted to victory in the last few hundred metres.

The first three riders across the line gain time bonuses of 10, 6, and 4 seconds.

The countdown begins for the Tour de France arrival in Nice 2024. Literally and figuratively. A counter has been installed at Rauba Capeu counting the days before the arrival of the Tour de France in Nice. The iconic “I Love Nice” sculpture has now been changed to the colors of the Tour de France.

I Love Nice sign

The dates to keep in mind are July 20 and July 21 2024 . On Saturday 20th July, the riders will set off from the Promenade des Anglais on a spectacular route up to the Col de la Couillole in Stage 20 .The race will close with a time trial between Monaco and Nice, ending at Place Massena on Sunday July 21 in Stage 21 . For the first time in the history of the famous bicycle race, the cyclists will arrive in a city other than Paris. And it ends with an exciting time trial rather than the traditional procession down the Champs Elysées.

Cyclists in Nice

Tour de France 2024

The Olympic Games in Paris this year (26 July to 11 August) has forced a change of plans for the Tour de France. Since Paris will be embroiled in preparations for the Olympics, the Tour de France will completely bypass the City of Light. Instead, the prestigious cycling race will begin in Florence the 29 June and continue in central Italy before proceeding through France. Here is a map of the entire route:

Tour de France route map

The race consists of 21 individual stages, each offering its own unique characteristics and challenges. These stages vary in length, terrain, and difficulty, ranging from flat, sprinter-friendly routes to grueling mountain climbs.

Throughout the race, rest days are scheduled to allow riders to recuperate and recharge their energy levels. These rest days also provide an opportunity for teams to strategize and make any necessary adjustments for the remainder of the race.

In addition to individual stage victories, riders compete for the overall classification, symbolized by the iconic yellow jersey (maillot jaune). The rider with the lowest cumulative time across all stages wears the yellow jersey and leads the general classification. Other classifications include the green jersey (points classification), polka dot jersey (mountains classification), and white jersey (best young rider).

Riders must finish each stage within a specified time limit to remain in the race. Failure to do so may result in elimination from the Tour de France.

The fact that the race will conclude with a time trial this year means that there will be no winner until the finish line is crossed at Place Massena. Should be exciting!

Where to Watch the Tour de France 2024

Yes there will be crowds. Everywhere. But especially in Nice and Monaco. Some of the details are still being worked out but we do know that it will be free to watch the cyclists arrive in Nice at the end of the race. There will be barriers placed along the Promenade des Anglais as the racers speed down the Prom from the Quai Rauba Capeu to the Hotel Negresco where they will reverse course before finishing at the Place Massena. There will be grandstands around the Place Massena and along the Prom with tickets distributed to partners and associates of ASO, the company that runs the Tour de France. There will also be barriers along the entire route to the Place Massena behind which the public can gather to watch the exciting finish.

I don't need to remind you that the public viewing areas will be jammed. If you act fast though, you may be able to score a hotel room with a view of the race. Here are the hotels along the Promenade des Anglais with a view of the Tour de France:

Hotel Mercure Nice Promenade

Hotel La Perouse

Hotel Suisse

Hyatt Regency Palais Méditerranée

Opera Promenade 4 (apartments)

Hotel Le Royal

Hotel West End

Hotel Westminister

Hotel Le Negresco

Another option is to climb Castle Hill which gives you a view of the race. Bring binoculars!

Back Country

Viewing the Tour de France from a country road or a mountain village can be a great way to explore the lesser known highlights of the region and also join in the Tour de France fun. The problem is getting there and finding parking if you go by car. In most cases it's preferable to arrive by public transport. Here are some possible vantage points:

Drap Transport: train or bus

L'Escarene Transport: train

Sospel Transport: train

Lantosque Transport: buses

Saint Martin de Vesubie Transport: bus

Valdeblore Transport: buses

Col de la Couillole Transport: car only

Beausoleil Transport: bus or on foot from Monaco

La Turbie Transport: bus

Col d'Eze Transport: car only

Villefranche-sur-Mer Transport: bus or train

Another option for viewing the race is to head up to Isola 2000, a ski resort that's easily accessible by bus from Nice. Stage 19 will finish there on 19 July.

I must emphasize that the planning for viewing the Tour de France is in its preliminary stages. Do bookmark this page or subscribe to my blog as I will be updating as information arrives.

Tour de France 2024 : dream finale on the french riviera

The day after the finish of Paris-Nice, Tour de France organisers unveiled, in the presence of Nice mayor Christian Estrosi and Prince Albert II of Monaco, the details of the last two stages of the 2024 edition. A mountainous course from Nice to Col de la Couillole has been designed for the 20th stage scheduled on Saturday, July 20th, while the 21st stage will be contested in a 35-km time trial on Sunday, July 21st, between Monaco and Place Masséna in Nice . An ideal programme for an exciting final weekend.

nice tour de france 2024

For the Tour de France to finish far from its traditional Parisian finale is already a historic first. But for the last two days of the 2024 edition, an extremely promising menu has been prepared, including all the necessary ingredients for major upsets at the top... on the Saturday as well as on the Sunday! The weekend on the French Riviera will start with a mountain stage that will be as tight (132 km) as it is tough. There will be a Paris-Nice feel to it for, after rediscovering the Col de Braus, the peloton will tackle the climb to Col de Turini where Egan Bernal wore the yellow jersey in 2019 as did Primoz Roglic in 2022. Riders familiar with the Race to the Sun will then return to Col de La Colmiane, where Roglic also triumphed on his last visit in 2021. Going up, down and up again, climbers will finally battle it out on Col de la Couillole, which saw Richie Porte in 2017 and Tadej Pogacar in 2023 raise their arms.

After starting out this Tour de France from Italy, the riders will once again cross borders for a handful of kilometres, this time for a short visit to Monaco. The principality was already the launchpad of an individual time trial for the first stage of the 2009 Tour. This time the main contenders will not be seeking the first yellow jersey of the edition but, much more importantly, the last! It remains to be seen whether the GC positions at that stage will make it possible, probable or unrealistic for the most coveted outfit in cycling to change hands in the last TT of the Tour: like Charly Gaul winning the 1958 edition ahead of Vito Favero ;  Jan Janssen did it at the expense of Herman Van Springel in 196 8; Greg LeMond to the dismay of Laurent Fignon in 1989 ; Cadel Evans quite logically against Andy Schleck in 2011 ; and most recently Tadej Pogacar in a battle between Slovenians against Primoz Roglic in 2020 . The same two will perhaps face each other in 2024, possibly in the company of Danish, Belgian, Spanish or even French rivals. In this final 35.2-km effort, they will have to make the best of climbs familiar to the Race to the Sun regulars. La Turbie and Col d’Eze feature on the route that will lead them swiftly to Nice and Place Masséna.

The 2024 Men’s Tour de France Will Finish in Nice

A time trial on the last day could create some rare final stage drama at the Tour—but it won’t be in Paris.

1st tour de france femmes 2022 stage 1

For the first time since 1905, the Tour de France will not finish in Paris. In 2024, racers of Le Tour will finish with a time trial in the French seaside town of Nice. Why? The Olympic Games in Paris. Despite the race being shifted a week earlier to allow riders to compete in both Le Tour and the Olympic Games, the end of the race is still only five days before the Olympic opening ceremonies, and Paris simply couldn’t host both major events so close together.

Athletes from around the world will already be gathering in Paris by the time the Tour de France is in the final stages, making Paris a gridlocked nightmare for organizing any event outside of the Olympics.

Yesterday, the Mayor of Nice Christian Estrosi, Tour de France general director Christian Prudhomme, Director General of Amaury Sport Organisation (ASO) Yann Le Moenner, and Prefet of Alpes Maritimes Bernard Gonzalez made the announcement that Nice will host the final stage of the 2024 Tour de France. Nice has been part of the Tour in the past, and of course, it’s hosted the Paris-Nice finish line, but this will be the first time Nice has hosted a cycling finale of this magnitude. (The 2024 Tour de France will also dip into Italy.)

cycling tdf france presser

Equally exciting is the time trial format, which can create a tension-filled final stage if there are several riders with only seconds dividing them. As ASO explains, “The sporting qualities of the riders likely to win mean that the Tour could remain undecided until the last few kilometres, as was the case in 1989, the last time the event offered a time trial to close the proceedings. On that day, Greg LeMond beat Laurent Fignon by 58 seconds to win his second Tour by the narrowest margin in history, eight seconds... It is said that records are made to be broken, and the context of a battle of mere seconds takes on a new dimension when looking at the final weekend in general.”

No comment has been made regarding the 2024 Tour de France Femmes, however. We’re hoping to get more information soon, since if the timeline that ASO has used in 2022 and 2023 continues, with the first stage of the women’s race starting at the end of the men’s Tour, the Tour de France Femmes will overlap with the Olympic Games. We hope to have more information about the 2024 Tour de France Femmes soon.

The 111th edition of the Tour de France is expected to start in Italy in 2024, with the Grand Depart in Florence and stages celebrating former winners Gino Bartali, Riccardo Nencini, Marco Pantani, Ottavio Bottecchia and Fausto Coppi.

Bottecchia was the first Italian to win the Tour de France and 2024 marks the 100th anniversary of his victory.

The Tour de France has visited Italy a number of times but never started there. Thanks to an estimated €10 million fee raised by the Tuscany, Emilia-Romagna and Piemonte regions, the 2024 Grand Boucle will include  three stages in Italy and the start of stage 4 in Pinerolo before the race heads into France via the Alps.

According to a detailed report by La Gazzetta dello Sport , the 2024 Tour de France will also have a unique finish, with Nice expected to host the final stage instead of Paris.

The French capital will host the Olympic Games in 2024, making it impossible to host the traditional final stage of the Tour de France on the Champs-Élysées just a few days before the Opening Ceremony. The 2024 Tour de France will be held between Saturday June 29 and Sunday July 21, a week earlier than usual, with the Paris Olympics scheduled for between July 26 and August 11.

Prudhomme visits Bologna to discuss Italian Tour de France Grand Départ Pogacar: The pressure for this year's Tour de France is already there Tour de France 2022

Tour de France director Christian Prudhomme visited Italy in 2020 to first negotiate a deal for the Grand Depart and in recent weeks race staff have visited the locations of the different stages to assess the logistics.

According to La Gazzetta dello Sport , the opening stage will start in Florence in Piazzale Michelangelo that overlooks the Renaissance city. The 190km road stage will celebrate 1938 and 1945 Tour winner Gino Bartali by passing through his birthplace in Ponte a Ema. The stage will then climb through the Apeninnes and finish on the Romagna coast in Rimini to show off the Adriatic coastline.

Stage 2 will start in Cesenatico, where Marco Pantani was born, and also climb into the hills before a finish in central Bologna after 200km of racing. This  stage could climb up to Barberino di Mugello to remember 1960 winner Gastone Nencini.

Stage 3 will be from Modena to Piacenza with another hilly road stage, much like the 2021 Giro d’Italia stage to Sestola, where the USA’s Joe Dombrowski won. The area is known as Italy’s food valley due to the production of cured ham and Parmigiano cheese.

After a transfer west to Piemonte, the Tour de France will leave Italy from Pinerolo, recalling Fausto Coppi’s legendary breakaway in the 1949 Tour de France. Coppi was the first rider to ever complete the Giro d’Italia-Tour de France double in 1949 and repeated the feat in 1952.

Prudhomme is expected to confirm Italy as the host of the 2024 Grand Depart when the full route of the 2023 race is presented in Paris in late October.
