How to set a custom scale for each website in macOS Safari

Safari 14 Mac icon

Website designers have particular feelings about how their work should look on your display. The rise of  responsive design  over the last several years has led to most sites automatically resizing their type and graphics and reshaping their layout to fit the size of your browser window or the device you’re using. You should be able to read, navigate, and interact with a web page without making your own adjustments. (Responsive design means the site uses style sheets and sometimes JavaScript to  respond  to the dimensions of the view within the browser window.)

Unfortunately, designers may have better eyesight than many of us who use the sites they produce, leading to sites that are perfectly responsive in showing type that’s too small to read. I’m sure you’ve had the experience as often as I have of squinting and leaning in more closely to read the type on a page or puzzle out a symbol.

You likely know that you can use keyboard shortcuts in Safari for macOS (and other browsers) to scale the contents of the page larger and smaller. Press Command-hyphen (used here as a “minus”) to shrink everything on a page relative to its 100 percent scale. Press Command-equal sign (used here for the plus sign also found on the key) to enlarge a page. (Safari recognizes the intent without you need to press Shift to directly “type” the plus sign. You can type Command-= or Command-Shift-=.)

Some sites take this enlargement and reduction better than others. Press Command-0 (zero) to take the site back to Actual Size, whatever that means in a relative world.

safari enlarge screen

However, what you may be unaware of is that Safari retains these zoom preferences in a way that lets you modify them later and set and overall default. Go to  Safari > Preferences > Websites  and click Zoom . Here you see a list of the zoom percentage for sites in open tabs and windows, as well as any custom zoom values you’ve set for other sites visited with the browser.

You can also use the “When visiting other websites” pop-up menu to change the default zoom for any site you subsequently visit.

Apple offers another kind of zoom as part of its accessibility features that can trip you up because the keyboard shortcuts are nearly identical. Accessibility’s Zoom option enlarges the entire display in intervals above 100 percent. Press Command-Option-equal sign to enlarge the display and Command-Option-hyphen to reduce it. The minimum is 100 percent. (Command-Option-8 toggles between your last enlargement and 100 percent.) The Zoom view in the Accessibility preference pane offers more customization options.

How to Modify Text Size in the Safari Browser on a Mac

You don't have to squint to read web pages in Safari

safari enlarge screen

  • Step-by-Step: Change the Font Size in Safari

Change the Zoom Level in Safari

Add zoom controls to the safari toolbar, enlarge safari pages on macs with a trackpad.

When viewing a web page in the Safari web browser for the Mac, the text and screen contents may be too small to see comfortably, especially if you use a small-screen laptop. In other situations, the screen contents may be too large.

Safari makes it easy to change the font size and zoom level of web pages so that you can view web pages comfortably.

These instructions apply to Safari versions 13 through 9, covering macOS Catalina through OS X El Capitan.

Change the Font Size in Safari

To make the text larger or smaller, adjust the web page's font size.

Open the Safari browser on your Mac and go to a web page.

To increase the font size, press Option + Command + + (the plus sign).

To decrease the font size, press  Option + Command + - (the minus sign).

Alternatively, to increase the font size, go to View and select Make Text Bigger .

To decrease the font size from the menu, go to View and select Make Text Smaller .

Web sites stay at the font size you set. To return everything to its original state, go to the History menu item, select Clear History , and then select Clear History again.

Changing the zoom level on a web page is a little different from changing the text size because the tool increases or decreases the size of both text and images. Here's how to change the zoom level on a web page in Safari:

Go to the View menu at the top of the screen and select Zoom In to make all content on the current web page appear bigger. Repeat to make the content even larger.

Alternatively, use the keyboard shortcut  Command + + (the plus sign) to increase the zoom level.

To make the web page content display at a smaller size in Safari, select View > Zoom Out .

Or use the keyboard shortcut  Command + - (the minus sign) to make all content appear smaller.

To reset the zoom, go to View > Actual Size , or use the keyboard shortcut Command + 0 (zero). This command isn't available until you zoom in or out on the page.

Add a zoom icon to the Safari toolbar to make zooming in and out even easier. Here's how:

Go to View  and select  Customize Toolbar .

In the pop-up window, select the pair of buttons labeled  Zoom  and drag the buttons to Safari's main toolbar.

Select  Done  to exit the customization screen.

Two new buttons appear on the toolbar. Select the small letter A to zoom out, and select the larger letter A to zoom in.

Macs with a trackpad have more ways to change a web page's size. Place two fingers together on the trackpad and then spread your fingers apart to make a Safari web page bigger. Pull the two fingers back together to reduce the size of the web page.

A double-tap with two fingers on the trackpad zooms in closely on a section of the web page. A second double-tap returns the page to standard size.

Having trouble reading Safari's tiny fonts on your Mac? It's easy to make all of the smallest fonts in Safari bigger by default with a quick change in Safari Preferences. Here's how.

In Safari, you may be familiar with increasing or decreasing the font size on a website-to-website basis using the Command+Plus ("+") and Command+Minus ("-") keyboard shortcuts . But if you don't want to fiddle with those settings for every site, Safari allows you to increase the minimum font size and have it apply to all the websites you visit.

This is similar to Safari's Page Zoom feature . While the zoom feature enlarges both the content and the text, the font size feature retains the original page formatting and doesn't touch the media on the page.

Related: How to Set a Default Zoom Level in Safari for Mac

To get started, open the Safari browser on your Mac. Click "Safari" in the top menu bar and choose "Preferences" from the drop-down menu.

In Safari Preferences, click the "Advanced" tab.

In the "Advanced" tab, locate the "Accessibility" section and click the check mark next to "Never Use Font Sizes Smaller Than." In the drop-down menu, choose between "14," "18," or "24" -point font sizes.

If you find the text really hard to read, go with the 24-point font size, which will double the default text size for most websites. However, for some people, the 18-point size is the sweet spot.

Instantly, you will see the text in all open websites change to a larger size.

If you change your mind later and want the smaller font sizes back, click "Safari" in the menu bar and navigate to Preferences > Advanced, and then uncheck the "Never Use Font Sizes Smaller Than" option. Alternately, you can simply select a smaller font size from the menu.

If you'd like to do the same thing on your iPhone or iPad, you can't make a blanket change that applies to all websites, but you can increase or decrease the font size on any web page in Safari in just a few taps. Happy browsing!

Learn how to make the text bigger in Safari for every website to see things more clearly when browsing the web on your iPhone, iPad, and Mac.

Make text bigger Safari on Mac

While there’s sort of an unofficial standard when it comes to text size for a webpage, you’ll come across one or two along the way that use a very small font. And even if you don’t, you might simply have a little trouble viewing the text on pages clearly.

What you might not realize is that with one simple setting, you can always see the text in a larger size in Safari.

Change the font size in Safari on Mac

  • Open Safari and click Safari > Settings or Preferences from the top menu bar.
  • Choose the Advanced tab.
  • Check the box next to Accessibility for Never use font sizes smaller than and pick a size from the drop-down box. You can try out different sizes and see the changes immediately within Safari. This lets you pick the right one for you.

Never use font sizes smaller than 18 in Safari settings on Mac

Close the Safari Settings pane and then enjoy browsing the web without squinting.

Change Safari’s font size on iPhone or iPad

The simplest way to change the font size in Safari on your iPhone or iPad is to use the View Menu button in the address bar. While this change will only apply to the site you’re visiting, the setting will be remembered each time you visit that domain, even if you close the tab and reopen it.

  • With a webpage open in Safari on your iOS device, tap the View Menu button in the address bar.
  • Tap the large A on the right to increase the size or the small A on the left to decrease it.

Adjust text size in Safari on iPhone

And remember, you can also use the Reader View and adjust the per-site settings for Safari on iOS.

Many people don’t take the time to explore the accessibility options on their devices unless they really need to. But some terrific features can make your device experience so much better. And this is one of them.

Do you want Safari to fill the screen instead of looking like a window every time you open it? Fortunately, you're just a few menu clicks away from that! By default, Safari will open as a window, but this wikiHow article teaches how to have Safari on your Mac open in full-screen all the time!

Things You Should Know

  • Maximize Safari by clicking the green icon and selecting "Enter Full Screen."
  • Alternatively, use keyboard shortcuts like "Cmd + Ctrl + F" to make Safari full-screen.
  • Once Safari is in full-screen mode, go to "System Settings > General" and uncheck the box next to "Close windows…"

Step 1 Click the green

  • Alternatively, press a keyboard shortcut to enter Full Screen without using your mouse. For macOS Big Sur and earlier, press Cmd + Ctrl + F . For macOS Monterey and later, press Fn + F . [2] X Research source Press those shortcut buttons again or Esc to close full-screen.
  • Move your mouse over areas to reveal hidden objects when Safari is full screen. For example, the Dock is hidden when you use Safari in full screen. Simply make it appear again by moving your mouse to wherever your Dock is.

Step 1 Open System Settings.

  • If you're using an older version of macOS, "System Settings" will instead be "System Preferences."

Step 2 Click Desktop & Dock.

  • If you're using an older macOS version, this is a checkbox in "General" instead. Make sure it's unchecked so your Safari windows will not be closed when you quit the application.
  • Press Cmd + Q to quit Safari without closing any windows. If you go to your open windows and close them with "Cmd + W," then you won't be able to restore that window by opening Safari again. Instead, press Cmd + Q to be able to re-open that window in full-screen mode whenever you open Safari.

Expert Q&A

  • If you're using an iPad and split-screen is causing your Safari to take up only half the screen, disable it by dragging the grey line. Thanks Helpful 0 Not Helpful 0

Satisfactory: How to Make Efficient Factories (Tips, Tricks, & Strategies)

Rocksteady's rumored new batman game definitely won't be the game i want, should you start a new farm for stardew valley version 1.6.

In Satisfactory , players build large-scale production lines to harvest materials on an alien planet and convert them to manufactured materials. Like most resource management simulators, efficiency is incredibly important for progression. Without a proper balance of supply and demand, even the most basic factories can begin to falter.

Using a facility shows several different metrics, including information such as how much power it consumes, and how long it takes to produce the next item. There is also a Productivity Display that shows what the current Productivity of the facility is, indicating how well the facility is functioning. Here are a few tips and tricks for managing the Productivity of your factory.

How Productivity Works In Satisfactory

The ins & outs of productivity.

Productivity is measured as the percentage of time a facility is spent using power ( from different types of power generators ) without stalling. All facilities have materials coming in and products going out, but a fine balance is needed to accomplish this well. If too few materials are being fed to the facility, it will stop and wait to receive new items.

As players progress through Satisfactory their factories will become more and more complicated. This guide shows how to make factories efficient.

Similarly, facilities can only hold so many products before they need to be emptied. If the output is too slow , facilities will fill up and be unable to produce more until their storage is emptied. One of the best ways to avoid this is to connect facilities to Storage Containers , which will automatically hold items produced by your facilities. Using Conveyor Mergers or Splitters allows multiple products to be fed to a single Storage Container.

Is Productivity Important?

Where to find a balance.

While Productivity is important for your factories, achieving 100% efficiency is not feasible starting around mid-game. In the early game, it will be somewhat normal to see the Productivity Display showing 100% on most of your facilities. However, once your factory reaches a certain size, there will be downtime due to long-distance deliveries of materials or long processing times for different products. Especially when resources have to travel long distances to your facility, there will be waiting involved.

In the mid- to late-game, players can use trucks, drones, and even trains to more efficiently move materials across long distances .

However, that doesn't mean you shouldn't aim to improve Productivity. Carefully managing the inputs and outputs using conveyor belts can make improvements in even the largest of factories. Make sure to keep in mind the splitters, mergers, and multi-layered conveyor belts using Conveyor Lifts to allow stacking of material supply lines. With a bit of practice, Satisfactory players should have no trouble maximizing their production output.

Make favorite icons larger? Safari 14

Now that I have, unfortunately, upgraded to Safari 14, I have recreated my Top sites in a favorites folder. Is there any way to make the icons larger? All 16 of them sit in the middle of my 27" screen much too small —unable to even name them correctly. Ridiculous, unless some maven out there knows how to increase the icon's size.

Thanks! - John

  • Is it possible to change the size of the icon on your Favorites on Safari? A while ago there was an update that caused the Favorite icons to increase in size. When you click on the search bar, underneath it you have all of your saved Favorite sites. They used to be a tad smaller and I've been trying to find a way to get them back to their previous size without any success. I thought I would get used to it by now but I haven't. It bugs me a bit and I was hoping there was a solution. 904 3
  • What happened to being able to drag favorites from Safari start page and arranging them in my order? Why can I no longer drag and move my favorites icon on the safari start page? Not on the Home Screen and NOT the favorites folder. I use to be able to hold down and drag them just like the Home Screen, now when you press and hold a small page opens and asks if you want to copy, edit, share, save it to a group or delete. I just want it to wiggle so I can rearrange them to how I use them. I think this change happened after who knows which update but it is very frustrating. I have read all previous suggestions about rearranging the folder or rearranging the Home Screen, not what I’m looking for. Any hints? Thank you. 653 2
  • Safari Startpage Icons Is there a way to edit which Icon image is associated with a particular "favorite" page? For example, on my start page I have the "Meta" icon image associated with Google search page, and The NY Times icon is associated with Wordle, and the Wordle icon is associated with the NYT. This problem pre-dates my "upgrade" to MacOS Ventura. It's mainly a problem because I'm not a fan of a certain app and its CEO. 249 1

Disappointing no response to this after more than a week. I also don't like that when you have a LOT of tabs, they are reduced to just the icon. I wish there were options to control how these are displayed, and especially that tabs could be colored for easy identification.

They have a 'Settings for This Website...' on most Safari website/pages where you can change the default page zoom, which I have it set on 200% for this page as an example, but for some unexplained reason it's greyed out and disabled for the Start Page - and even the aA resizing icons and <cmd+> are disabled. Hopefully an update will rectify this problem.

But a lot of Apple's 'web' sites, such as the App Store for example don't have this functionality either, and for a company that pride's itself on accessibility, it's very disappointing.
