Interview: Greg Kihn Discusses New Music, Book and Tour Plans

greg kihn band tour 2023

If you’ve ever played in a classic-rock cover band, chances are you had a Greg Kihn song somewhere in your set list.

Through the early Eighties, the Greg Kihn Band racked up a series of hit singles, like “The Breakup Song (They Don’t Write ’Em),” “Lucky” and, his highest-charting track, 1983’s “Jeopardy,” all of which were issued on the independent power-pop label Beserkley Records.

Kihn released his last album in 1996, the same year that he launched his literary career with the novel Horror Show and became a radio fixture on KUFX FM in San Jose. After a string of ownership changes, KUFX became a superstation in San Francisco, and Kihn’s morning radio program was heard by millions each week.

But last September, following 17 years with the station, Kihn was dropped from the program, and his contract was allowed to lapse when it came up for renewal soon after.

Since then, the guitarist had a new burst of creative energy. He’s releasing digital remasters of classic albums from his group’s days. He’s also considering a summer tour with the Greg Kihn Band that will include his hits and possibly some new material. Plus, he’ll soon release a new Beatles-related fictional work titled Rubber Soul . Even without a radio show, Kihn has a big year ahead of him, as Guitar World learned in the following interview.

GUITAR WORLD: What led to your breakup with KUFX?

I’ve been doing radio for 17 years, 16 of them as the number-one morning show in San Francisco. The station I worked at was sold [ to Entercom Communications in January 2011 ], and I was probably the highest paid guy there. I was a ratings winner. I guess they looked around for things to cut and I was the one who had a great big bull’s-eye on my back that said “Highly Compensated Employee”! [ laughs ]

The thing is, radio is now a very corporate thing. It never used to be this bad. There used to be a few mom-and-pop radio stations and a few small radio groups, but now it’s all big corporations who buy the stations and basically do whatever they want. I stayed on for a year and a half [ following the Entercom purchase ], and then they cut me loose. Since I was let go, I’ve really been on a creative burst. I’ve finished a novel and started writing songs again. I’ve also started rehearsing the band, and now we have a few offers for tours this summer.

greg kihn band tour 2023

What’s it like being back in the studio again?

I’d forgotten how much fun the whole process of creating is. Back when the band was in its prime, we would rehearse every day. Being in the studio and coming up with ideas was when it was the most fun. Before you know it, you’re writing songs.

“Jeopardy” was a huge hit for you. What do you remember about that time in your career?

I remember exactly where I was when I found out it was Number One. We were driving in the tour bus, out in the middle of nowhere, and saw a sign for Custer’s Last Stand, so we stopped. I got on the payphone and called the record company to see how the song was doing, and the guy on the other end said, “Son, your record’s just gone to Number One! ” [ laughs ]. The guys and I all high-fived each other and then drove around until we found a bar. We celebrated the rest of the afternoon by drinking a pitcher of margaritas and getting toasted. [ laughs ]

How did that song come about?

One day, Steve Wright [ keyboardist for the Greg Kihn Band ] came over to my house with a Casio [ portable keyboard ] and started playing me that riff, and I swear to God, out of nowhere, as if I was channeling the song, I just started singing, “Our love’s in jeopardy”…the ooh s and everything! I don’t know where it came from. It was completely spontaneous. Steve looked at me and asked, “Hey, did you know I was coming over?” And I said, “No, it just popped out of my head!” We wrote that song in 15 minutes. [ laughs ].

All of the great songs seem to write themselves. If it takes you three weeks to finish a song, you know that song isn’t going anywhere. But if you can write a song that just pops out of you like it writes itself, nine times out of 10 it’s going to be a hit. All of my Top 10 hits, like “Jeopardy,” “Breakup Song” and “Lucky,” all came flying out. I figure that half of the songs the Beatles wrote were like that. They just sat down and stuff would come flying out.

What’s the secret to getting in the zone?

If I knew the answer to that, I’d be a millionaire! [ laughs ] But I think the key as a songwriter is to try and get yourself mentally in that space. You can’t worry about things like needing to have your transmission fixed or that your taxes are overdue. You need to have your mind completely cleared, and then the ideas will come. You also have to just wait and be patient. The harder you try to make it happen, the harder it becomes.

Tell me a little about your upcoming book.

It’s a murder mystery that will probably be coming out in March called Rubber Soul . It’ll be published by Premier Digital Publishing. It’s a historical fiction story about a guy who meets and becomes best friends with the Beatles before they become the Beatles. He sticks with them up until they’re superstars. It culminates with their harrowing 1966 experiences in Manila after they allegedly snub the Marcos regime. [ The Beatles turned down an invitation to a reception at the palace of Ferdinand Marcos, then president of the Philippines. The palace responded by turning mobs of angry Marcos followers against the group and making the Beatles pay a large sum of money before being allowed to leave the country. ]

What are your plans for the rest of this year?

I’ll probably be spending the summer touring and having fun. The last full-fledged tour for me was at least 16 years ago. I was always a weekend warrior, but as far as a real tour is concerned, I haven’t done one for as long as I’ve been on radio. But it’s just like riding a bike, and I’m really looking forward to it.

Greg Kihn’s latest book, Rubber Soul , will be released In March. To keep up to date on Kihn’s show dates and book and album releases, check out his web site and Facebook .

Remembering Greg Kihn: A lasting impact on music, radio, and literature

G reg Kihn, the Bay Area rock musician famous for the 1980s hits "Jeopardy" and "The Breakup Song," passed away at the age of 75 due to complications from Alzheimer's disease on August 13, 2024.

His death marks the end of a career that left a mark on rock and pop music, particularly in the 1980s. Born and raised in Baltimore, Maryland, Kihn's musical journey truly began when he moved to the San Francisco Bay Area in the 1970s. He signed with Berkeley's Beserkley Records, a label known for nurturing the "power pop" sound that combined "teenage innocence" and catchy melodies with a dash of rock edge.

This move proved pivotal, as Kihn, with his band aptly named the Greg Kihn Band, began to release a string of albums with playful, pun-filled titles such as Next of Kihn (1978), RocKihnRoll (1981), and Kihntinued (1982). These albums helped establish his signature blend of rock and pop, and brought him greater recognition in the music world. Kihn’s breakthrough came in 1981 with "The Breakup Song (They Don’t Write ’Em)," a power pop tune that resonated with fans for its raw lyrics and catchy hooks.

The song peaked at No. 15 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart, earning his place in the rock scene. His biggest commercial success, however, came two years later with the release of "Jeopardy" in 1983. The song, with its infectious, bouncy rhythm, shot up to No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 and even topped the Billboard dance chart. Its accompanying music video became a regular fixture on MTV, further amplifying its popularity.

In a testament to its cultural relevance, " Weird Al " Yankovic famously parodied the song with "I Lost on Jeopardy," a version that even featured Kihn in a cameo role in the video.

Greg Kihn was more than a musician

Aside from his success in music, Greg Kihn’s influence extended into radio broadcasting. In 1995, he transitioned into radio by joining San Jose’s KFOX (KUFX-FM), initially hosting a nighttime show. His engaging personality and deep knowledge of rock music quickly made him a favorite among listeners, leading to his long-standing position as the station's weekday morning host, a role he held for 16 years.

His contributions to the radio industry were recognized in 2012 when he was inducted into the Bay Area Radio Hall of Fame. Kihn was also a writer. His creative output included six novels, four of which were horror-themed. Admittedly, this writer hasn't read them, but one can imagine Jack Nicholson in his most "Here’s Johnny!" form saying "They don't write 'em like that anymore" after Wendy sees his "All work and no play makes Jack a dull boy" masterwork.

In 2013, he ventured into historical fiction with Rubber Soul , a murder mystery set in the world of the Beatles . His literary work reflected his wide-ranging imagination and love for storytelling, further demonstrating his artistic versatility.

In addition to writing, Kihn had a lesser-known passion—breeding rare mantises, an unusual hobby that showcased his curiosity beyond the world of entertainment. Despite his many talents and achievements, Greg Kihn remained grounded and well-loved by those who knew him personally. The statement on his official website fondly recalls him not only as a rock star but as a kind-hearted individual who inspired and brought joy to many.

Kihn’s legacy continues to live on through his contributions to rock music, radio, and literature, with his early pioneering work at Beserkley Records playing a pivotal role in shaping the sound of West Coast rock during the late 1970s and 1980s. His ability to seamlessly transition from rock frontman to radio personality to novelist underscores the breadth of his talent and his lasting impact across multiple creative fields.

Top 10 Greg Kihn Band Songs

The Greg Kihn Band Songs

Feature Photo: Nick Ares, CC BY-SA 2.0 <https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/2.0>, via Wikimedia Commons

Our Top 10 Greg Kihn Band songs list looks back at some of the great Greg Kihn Band songs released during their initial 1980s run. The band had a massive hit single in 1983 entitled “Jeopardy.” While they never were able to archive the success of that hit single ever again, the Greg Kihn Band did release a large catalog of great rock and roll records while continuing to tour over the next four decades. There have been many lineup changes over the years, but the one constant has always been the very talented and entertaining Greg Kihn.

# 10 – Tear That City Down

We open up our top 10 Greg Kihn Band songs list with the groove-filled song “Tear That City Down.” The song was released on the album Kihnspiracy . The song was written by Greg Kihn, Gary Phillips, Greg Douglass, Larry Lynch and Steve Wright. “Tear That City Down,”  served as the follow-up single to Greg Kihn’s massive hit entitled “Jeopardy.”

# 9 – Happy Man

Continuing with our top 10 Greg Kihn Band songs list we present the rocking single “Happy Man.” The song was released on their 1982 album Kihntinued.   It was the second single released from the album. “Happy Man,” faired better than the first as it broke the Billboard Hot 100 peaking at number 30. You just sometimes never know what song will be greeted more friendly on the radio.

# 8 – Testify

This one has a great guitar riff that you swear you heard before, but just can’t pinpoint it. The song “Testify,” was released on the Greg Kihn Band album entitled Kihntinued . The album was released in 1982. The song “Testify,” was the first single released from the album. Although it failed to break the Billboard Hot 100, it did become a top 10 hit on the Billboard Album Tracks charts peaking at number five.

# 7 – Lucky

This is a great Greg Kihn Band song that should have been a bigger hit than it was. The groove and melody are completely addicting on this one. Its just one of those perfect summer songs. “Lucky,” was released on the 1985 album entitled Citizen Kihn .  The song broke the Billboard Top 40 peaking at number 40. It would also be the last Greg Kihn Band song to ever break the Billboard Top 40

# 6 – Fascination

At number six on our top 10 Greg Kihn songs list is the new wave sounding track “Fascination.” For some reason, there were a lot of songs being released in the early 1980s called “Fascination.”  The song was released on the 1983 album Kihnspiracy . It was placed as the second track on the LP but was never released as a single. It’s one of those great deep tracks.

# 5 – Love And Rock And Roll

The Greg Kihn Band that recorded the album  Love and Rock & Roll was an entirely new band of musicians with the exception of  Greg Kihn. The most significant change in the lineup was the addition of a new guitarist named Joe Satriani . Pretty much unknown at the time, Joe Satriani would only record one album with the group before leaving to start his solo career. A career that would be jettisoned by his former student Steve Vai’s success and acknowledgment that Joe Satriani was his guitar teacher. Yes, that’s a Joe Satriani guitar solo at 2:20 . It’s not a long guitar solo but it makes an immediate impact and helped define the new sound of the Greg Kihn Band making this one of the most exciting albums Greg Kihn ever released.

# 4 – Reunited

No this is not the Peaches and Herbs song, this is a great rock and roll original from the Greg Kihn Band. The song was released in 1984 on the album Kihntagious .  The song and album served as the follow-up to his mega-selling 1983 album Kihnspiracy.  The video also continued the storyline we saw at the end of the video Jeopardy , well sort off. The videos that the band did were not of the highest quality from a technical standpoint, but they were a product of their times and budget. Nonetheless, we always enjoyed Greg Kihn Band videos. The band leader overacted to a point where he was fun to watch. Totally entertaining music and videos, especially this one. Where did that good witch come from?

# 3 – Another Girl Another Planet

This one lands in the number three spot for one reason…. Joe Satriani . If you heard this one without knowing it was the Greg Kihn Band, you never would have guessed it was them. This is the outlier in their catalog and its amazing. From the opening moment all the way through, its Joe Satriani shining all over. The song was never released as a single, the album didn’t really sell well. In the end, no one really with the exception of die hard Greg Kihn fans know this song even exists. That’s why we are ClassicRockHistory.com. Yeah Baby!

# 2 – The Breakup Song

The world was introduced to the sound of the Greg Kihn band with this fabulous song entitled “ The Breakup Song (They Don’t Write ‘Em). ” For many, this is one of those forgotten early 80s gems that music fans loved when it first was released. The song “ The Breakup Song (They Don’t Write ‘Em) ” would become the Greg Kihn Band’s first top 20 hit on the Billboard Hot 100 and the first of only two times that the band would reach that high on the Top 100. The song reached even higher on the Billboard Rock Albums and Top Tracks charts where it peaked at number five. “ The Breakup Song (They Don’t Write ‘Em) ” was released on the album Rockihnroll. The album was released in 1981. “ The Breakup Song (They Don’t Write ‘Em) ” was written by Greg Kihn and Steve Wright.

# 1 – Jeopardy

Our Top 10 Greg Kihn Band songs list comes to a close with Greg Kihn’s legendary song “Jeopardy.” There are a handful of songs that define certain periods of 1980’s music, “Jeopardy,” is one of them. “Jeopardy,”  would become the biggest hit of Greg Kihn’s musical career. It also became one of the biggest hits of the 1980s. The song was released in 1983 on the album entitled Kihnspiracy .

The song “Jeopardy,”  broke the Billboard Hot 100’s top 10 in 1983 reaching all the way up to number two on the charts. It was stopped from hitting number one by a song and an act that would have stopped anything. Michael Jackson’s earth-shattering song “Beat It,” which featured Eddie Van Halen and Steve Lukather of Toto prevented “Jeopardy,” from gaining the number one spot. Still, after all these years it’s impossible to not mention the name Greg Kihn without bringing up his song “Jeopardy.”
