What it’s like to travel to Maui right now — one year after the catastrophic wildfires

Five hundred feet outside the Lahaina burn zone, the tourists receive their leis.

As the torches of the Old Lahaina Luau flicker, bartenders mix mai tais and hula dancers get ready. After dinner, dancer and emcee Niki Rickard gathers the performers in a circle and asks the audience for “a moment of silence ... to acknowledge all we have lost.”

A year after the deadliest U.S. wildfire in a century, which killed at least 102 people and leveled 2,200 structures, this is what passes for business as usual in West Maui. Though 98% of the island carries no visible signs of the fire, most of the city of Lahaina was leveled and remains behind roadblocks as crews begin the transition from cleanup to reconstruction.

Homes and businesses lay in ruins after a devastating wildfire swept through town.

In the first two weeks after the fire, most of the city’s 12,700 residents moved into hotels, with FEMA footing many bills. Since then, amid ferocious debate about the island housing shortage and how to rebuild, most fire survivors have moved to longer-term housing or left the island. Many are back at work now, tending to tourists.

This tangle of mourning, recovery and tourism has many travelers wondering if it’s possible or respectful to spend a vacation on Maui now.

The answer is yes, according to every resident, worker and visitor I asked in three days on the island. But tourism lags about 25% behind pre-fire levels, and the situation can seem as layered as a Maui onion. While the average hotel room rents for more than $500 per night, residents scramble for housing and equilibrium.

It’s easy to spend a week on the island in full vacation mode without setting foot in Lahaina. Conversely, the island’s recovery campaign includes a variety of “voluntourism” options (detailed below) for those who want to dedicate half a day or more to pitching in.

But some curious visitors fall between those extremes. Tourism workers say this can lead to hard feelings, especially when visitors try to photograph damage or ask intrusively about lost homes and loved ones. That’s when many Mauians turn away, get angry or post signs at the end of their block reading, “Locals still grieving. Show Respect. No tourists.”

“Be sensitive,” said Siobhan Wilson, co-owner of the Maui Butterfly Farm in Olowalu. “Don’t go up and ask people, ‘What did you see and what happened?’ If people want to talk, they will.”

“Come with aloha. Leave with aloha,” said longtime resident George Pali, sitting at a Wahikuli Wayside Park picnic table near some long-term tents. “You guys [in California] have wildfires all the time, right? So you have some idea.”

Here’s an update for anyone considering travel to Maui, including reasons why you might or might not want to include a stop in Lahaina.

What’s open in Lahaina, and what’s gone

Most of Front Street, Lahaina’s commercial backbone, is no more. Little remains to remind a visitor that this was the capital of the Hawaiian Kingdom in the early 19th century under King Kamehameha II. But the flames didn’t claim everything.

At the north end of the street, a handful of restaurants and a dive shop were left largely intact, including the Old Lahaina Luau, despite its thatched roofs. It reopened in March and attracts up to 350 guests nightly, many of them happy to be adding dollars to the diminished local economy.

The Old Lahaina Luau reopened in March after the Maui wildfires on August 2023 destroyed most of Lahaina.

When Niki Rickard takes the microphone before those luau audiences, she doesn’t mention her own story. But it’s a potent one, and it hints at the experiences of many survivors.

Both of her parents are longtime employees of the luau, which started in 1986. Beginning about age 4, Rickard dreamed of dancing there, then landed a job doing just that. Now 30, she also handles sales and emcee duties, summarizing the island’s history of migration, colonization, whaling, plantations and resilience in diplomatically measured tones.

Last August, she had just returned from maternity leave when the fire broke out.

Neither Rickard, her husband or their daughter was injured, but their home burned.

“My daughter was 3 months old,” Rickard said in an interview.

Niki Rickard stands smiling in front of a rack of purple flower leis

Since the fire, Rickard has been among the thousands of residents dealing with temporary housing, an island-wide child-care shortage and plenty of government and insurance red tape.

“A lot of people in the community are not so happy with the government,” she said carefully.

The luau’s director of public and cultural relations, Kawika Freitas, also acknowledged “a lot of negative feelings” from those who believe the island reopened to tourism too soon. But people need work, Freitas said, and the luau employs about 160 people.

On the same block, the Mala Ocean Tavern reopened in February. Aloha Mixed Plate and Star Noodle (siblings of the luau under the same owner) reopened in March and Aug. 1, respectively. Honu Oceanside is to follow in late summer or fall.

Many more reopenings are expected in the coming weeks and months, giving visitors more reasons to stop and perhaps spend. Meanwhile, because of Maui’s layout, many others will be driving through on their way north.

Parasailing is popular off the Ka'anapali coastal resort area of West Maui.

The drive along Lahaina Bypass highway

The August fire, which began near downed utility poles amid drought conditions and gusting winds, blackened 6,721 acres in Lahaina and the up-country area near Kula. It didn’t reach Maui’s east coast (which includes the famed road to Hana) or the southwest coast (which includes the city of Kihei and the Wailea resort area) or the northern coast (which includes Kahului airport).

Nor did flames get to the west coast hotels and condos that begin with Ka’anapali, just a mile north of Lahaina.

But to reach those resorts, visitors do drive the Lahaina Bypass highway. Just before the highway passes over Lahainaluna Road, those visitors see a sobering roadside shrine on their right — scores of crosses and photos, strewn with leis. (Having been warned that many residents see the memorial as a place for victims’ families and survivors only, I didn’t approach on foot.)

Sign on a telephone pole reads "Locals still grieving Show respect No tourists"

In the next mile, as drivers transition from the highway to Keawe Street and Honapiilani Highway, several signs thank first responders, exhort the community to be strong and call for tourists to show respect. Only a few charred ruins are visible from the road. Six-foot-high roadside screens shield many properties from view.

Visitors won’t see Waiola Church, Lahaina Hongwanji Mission, the historic Baldwin Home or popular restaurants like Kimo’s, Fleetwood’s on Front Street or Cheeseburger in Paradise, all burned. The city’s iconic banyan tree, damaged but recuperating, remains off-limits.

FEMA reports that by July 31, cleanup crews had cleared 319,000 tons of fire debris, nearly 34 tons of asbestos and 3,000 fire-damaged cars, with 47 rebuilding permits issued by Maui County.

On Saturday, utility company Hawaiian Electric, the state of Hawaii and five other defendants announced a $4-billion settlement agreement with fire victims, pending court approval. Total damages have been estimated at $5.5 billion or more.

One Maui resident, asking to be unnamed, told me he’d just finished a six-month job in the burn zone, wearing a Tyvek suit and respirator, waiting for blessings before stepping onto home sites, scraping ash and asbestos, finding class rings, guns, jewels and puddles of melted aluminum.

Yet just north of Lahaina, a visitor reenters the Maui seen on postcards and screensavers.

What West Maui’s resorts look like and what they cost

In the morning, catamarans glide up to the beach, kids line up for surf lessons, and golfers head to the courses at Kapalua. At day’s end, legions gather to watch the sunset as daredevils leap from the Black Rock Beach boulders to the sea.

Though the Royal Lahaina and Outrigger resorts in Ka’anapali housed many fire survivors as recently as early July, state and federal officials say the vast majority have moved on to intermediate or permanent housing.

In June, Hawaii’s state tourism statistics show, visitor arrivals to Maui were down 21.8% from the year before, with spending down 27.1%.

The average Maui County hotel rate that month: $554 per night, down 10.5% from the year before, with a third of rooms empty.

The average vacation rental cost less — $401 per night, with a 44% vacancy rate. But that may soon change. Maui Mayor Richard Bissen has proposed converting 7,000 condo units from short-term use to long-term within three years, creating more housing for residents.

“We’ve been coming here for years, and I have never seen the [Ka’anapali] walkway so clear,” said Russ Hill of Santa Clarita, who has a West Maui timeshare.

A moment later, he strapped into a parasailing rig, zoomed 500 feet above Ka’anapali Beach and saw exactly what he wanted to see: island slopes under clear blue skies, a line of hotels along the beach, a few leaping dolphins and no reminders of the fire except the boat captain’s “Maui Strong” T-shirt.

How visitors become volunteers

Napili Noho , an emergency service hub in Napili Park, stands about three miles north of Ka’anapali. It didn’t exist before the fire. Now it often gets 200 guests in a day.

They browse a free store stocked with food, shoes and hygiene items, sit for meals (prepared with help from other charities) or step into the lomi lomi tent, where masseurs and chiropractors give free treatments.

Most days, at least one short-term volunteer visitor shows up, having signed up online . On the Tuesday I arrived it was Tom Fox, 81, a semiretired real estate agent from Pleasanton.

For years, Fox and his wife have been visiting West Maui to play golf and lie low. They were at their Napili condo when the fire struck and wound up inviting their housekeepers to stay in the condo for several weeks.

Now the housekeepers have moved on, Fox said, and he’s found that he’s not as good as his wife is at keeping busy.

“So I found out about this place and came on down,” Fox said. The day before, he’d bought Mason jars for storing cooking oil. Now he was labeling them for community members who might speak English, Hawaiian, Spanish, Chinese, Tagalog, Tongan or Samoan.

Around him, other workers were breaking down bulk packages of salt, soap and other goods, including another volunteer from off-island, a 38-year-old man who goes by the name Savage.

“I was supposed to be here five days,” he told me.

Until last August, Savage said, he was working as a health-focused life coach in Las Vegas. After the Maui disaster, he joined an island-bound group of volunteers from his church.

A man in a tank top among shelves filled with goods.

Once he arrived, Savage, who said he has Dakota Sioux heritage and is an Air Force combat veteran, found that “this was very familiar to me.”

Eleven months after arriving, Savage moves from task to task in his flip-flops, walkie-talkie in hand, four days a week, helping displaced residents feed families and cope with makeshift living situations. He’ll be here “until I’m at peace that it’s time to move on.”

The key, Savage said, is offering comfort without giving advice or trying to counsel anyone. That might mean “asking aunties for cooking recipes,” he said. “Just talking story. Our community may not need to shop as much as they need distractions from life. They might not know where they’re going to be next week.”

Things to note In the high country at the south end of Maui, Haleakala National Park’s popular Crater Road and summit area have been closed periodically because of nearby brushfires. Check the park website before planning a visit.

To volunteer on Maui, don’t rely on last-minute suggestions from your hotel’s concierge or activities desk. Make a plan in advance. Mauinuistrong.info includes many volunteering options, as does the website of the Hawaiian Tourism Authority . Malama Kula operates in the up-country area. Napili Noho runs the emergency services hub in Napili Park. Maui Cultural Lands runs programs to protect cultural resources, plant native vegetation and battle invasive species, with volunteer workdays every Saturday in the Honokowai Valley above Ka’anapali. Similar work happens Wednesdays and Thursdays at Kipuka Olowalu , south of Lahaina.

The Lahaina Cannery and Lahaina Gateway malls are open, and more Lahaina businesses are reopening every month. This website tracks reopenings.

Multiple trailers caught fire overnight at Camping World RV Sales in Westmoreland County

By Mike Darnay , Lauren Linder

Updated on: August 28, 2024 / 12:23 PM EDT / CBS Pittsburgh

ALLEGHENY TOWNSHIP, Pa. (KDKA) -- Explosions burst into flames at a Westmoreland County camper dealership Wednesday morning. Allegheny Township Police Chief Daniel Uncapher told KDKA that at least 18 campers were destroyed or damaged.

No one was hurt. Now investigators are trying to figure out what caused it to start.

screenshot-2024-08-28-063439.png

Bright orange flames shot into the sky from the back lot of Camping World off Route 356. Rachel Ramsey and her husband woke up to loud explosions.

"It just looked like a huge bonfire," Ramsey said. "You just hear like pop, pop, pop."

They got nervous and ran outside to see what was going on, and quickly realized it was coming from campers.

"It looked like three of them were on fire and it was spreading, so you'd hear, like, really big pops and hisses as the tires would explode," Ramsey said.

Uncapher said first responders got called to respond to the area at 4:42 a.m. and found several RVs on fire.

"Our officers got on scene within seven minutes," Uncapher said.

Firefighters from 10 companies worked to extinguish the flames, and for hours continued to put out hot spots that could have come from multiple chemicals on the vehicles.

"On any camper you have a lot of fuel sources, you have batteries, you have propane tanks, you have sometimes diesel and gas," Uncapher said.

Uncapher said the business was empty at the time.

"The gates were closed. They were still closed when the officers got here, so we have no reason to believe that anybody broke in," Uncapher said.

However, a cause remains unclear.

Either way, Ramsey is a little shaken, knowing things could have been much worse.

"I'm definitely not going to forget it. It was quite a way to wake up at 4:30," Ramsey said.

The state fire marshal is investigating with help from local police and fire.

KDKA reached out to Camping World for comment but has not heard back at this time.

What The Travel Corporation Sale Means for Tour Operators and Travel Agencies

Dennis Schaal

Dennis Schaal , Skift

July 17th, 2024 at 5:19 PM EDT

If the deal goes through, Apollo might merge some of The Travel Corporation's brands, or pair them with other assets the private equity firm owns.

Dennis Schaal

Expect more private equity deals in the tour operator and travel agency sectors.

That was the view of a source familiar with The Travel Corporation’s operations in the wake of news it would be acquired by Apollo Global Management . The source added that multiple private equity firms had also expressed interest in the Travel Corporation.

“And one of the themes all of these PE guys are talking about is the next generation of tour operators, which of course, are digital natives and connected from a data perspective,” the source said, who predicted that there will be plenty of private equity deals to come in these areas.

Travel agencies with a luxury clientele are attractive targets post-Covid, the source added.

Not A Fire Sale

The Travel Corporation is a family owned business and one factor driving the sale was that there was no heir apparent, the source said.

“We know globally that some of the old school tour operators have seen growth slow, but by no means was the business [TTC] in a terrible place. The business was in a strong place,” the source said.

The source didn’t comment on the value of the deal but wouldn’t characterize it as a “fire sale.”

The Tollman family opted to retain ownership of the Red Carnation Hotel Collection, which generated a big chunk of the group’s profits, but well under 50%, the source added.

What Apollo Might Do

“I imagine one of the things Apollo is thinking is in line with what all the other VC firms are doing,” the source said. “Can you take these traditional businesses, put in a better technology stack, which both potentially reduces the cost of customer acquisition, and increases operating margin. And then all of a sudden, you take a business that has OK margins, and turn it into a business that has pretty good margins.”

The source predicted that Apollo might consolidate some of The Travel Corporation brands — it owns 18 brands — and/or merge them with other Apollo assets. Over the years, Apollo has owned or invested in the Venetian Las Vegas, Great Wolf Resorts, American Express Global Business Travel, Oceania Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line, Caesars Entertainment, Diamond Resorts, Expedia and Atlas Air, among other holdings.

World Travel Holdings Co-CEO Chimes In

Brett Tollman, CEO of The Travel Corporation, declined to comment on the deal.

But another CEO of a major family owned business in travel, Jeff Tolkin, the co-CEO of World Travel Holdings , one of the largest cruise and vacation sellers in the U.S., spoke to Skift Wednesday about the implications of the Apollo-The Travel Corporation deal.

“As for the future of family owned businesses, I don’t think this portends anything but a bright future because this deal clearly evidences a successful conclusion for the Tollman assets sold,” Tolkin said.

Tolkin, who said he didn’t know the sale price of The Travel Corporation deal, added he doesn’t believe there will be many similar deals for acquisitions of family owned tour operators because there aren’t many big ones left.

Tauck’s Take on The Travel Corporation Sale

Tauck is one of the few large family owned tour operators that remain, and the company has been public about not being for sale, the source familiar with The Travel Corporations’ operations said.

Tauck CEO Dan Mahar confirmed that the company is not for sale, adding: “Every family and every family business is unique and one transaction does not represent a broader trend.”

He said Tauck is “thriving” as it approaches the beginning of its second century in business, adding that the company has “zero debt and robust family-capital to power our new strategic plan and [we] require no outside funding.”

“We love what we do,” Mahar said. “We are in great businesses, serving a growing market with a strong outlook in the decades ahead. Our guests are engaged with our brand and more loyal than ever. Our team is exceptionally strong and engaged by our business purpose and opportunity. We have respectful, deep relationship with partners around the world and we are united to bring the very best experience to our guests.”

Mahar added that the Tauck family is deeply engaged and has a strong governance system with involvement of multiple generations of the Tauck family, and all are united for the long term.”

Tolkin’s Take on Private Equity

Tolkin said the sale of The Travel Corporation would have no impact on World Travel Holdings.

Family owned travel agencies could be acquisition targets, though, Tolkin said.

“Private equity firms often use a rollup strategy or increase profitability in other ways,” Tolkin said. “Travel agencies are clearly here to stay and a growth sector in the travel business.”

He added: “The underlying fundamentals are there.”

Tolkin said family owned businesses are “the backbone of the American economy. Private equity is one exit strategy that many family owned businesses eventually employ. This is a natural progression where both sides win.”

Southwest's Airfare Fire Sale Hopes To Boost Slow Travel Days

travel fire sales

The travel season is approaching and airlines are jockeying to pack flights full of vacationers. To that end, Southwest Airlines is having a bit of a fire sale.

The airline has dramatically  slashed its rates  on certain routes; until the sale ends on Thursday, it's possible to pick up one-way flights for $49 along certain domestic routes.

International travel isn't quite as cheap, but you can still find flights out of the country for around $130. Those flights are mostly only available on Tuesdays and Wednesdays, but cheap flights to U.S. territories like San Juan and Puerto Rico are open Monday through Thursday.

This comes on top of abnormally low fare rates thanks to rock-bottom fuel costs. The airfare prediction app  Hopper reports  flight prices are down 20 percent from where they were two years ago.

Semi-regular sales like these help give Southwest a competitive edge against other big U.S. carriers. It's a fair bet that United, Delta and American will drop some of their fare prices sometime soon in response.

But unlike previous sales, the cheap domestic flights only apply to flights on Tuesdays, Wednesdays and Saturdays. Those are typically  the days of the week  with the lightest travel rates, so it makes sense for Southwest to try to drum up some extra business on those days.

The fire sale covers flights from Aug. 23 through Dec. 14. Southwest has a full list of destinations and prices available on its website.

14 RVs, 1 camper damaged in overnight fire in Westmoreland County

APOLLO, Pa. — Fifteen vehicles were damaged in an overnight fire at a Westmoreland County RV dealer.

Westmoreland County 911 said crews were called to a two-alarm fire at Camping World RV Sales in Apollo.

The fire was raging at 4:40 a.m., and a neighbor caught it on video.

“My husband and I woke up to a really loud boom we thought there was a gunshot or something and looked out the window and saw the fire,” said Rachel Ransey, who can see Camping World’s back parking lot from her backyard.

Ramsey called 911, along with other neighbors who heard loud popping sounds that police say could have been propane tanks exploding. She was nervous her house would catch fire.

“Yeah there was a big explosion. I don’t know what flew. Something flew in the pool. I think it was a bunch of ash,” she said.

Ten fire departments responded to bring the fire under control. But, as the flames spread they consumed 14 RV’s and a Mercedes camper. Some of the vehicles were burned so badly only shells were left.

“The gates were closed, they were still closed when the officers got here so we have no reason to believe anyone broke in,” said Dan Uncapher with the Allegheny County Police Department.

Police plan on looking at video from a security camera on a building that could offer clues into how the fire started. Pennsylvania State Police and the Fire Marshal are investigating to determine the exact cause.

Hot, Hot, Hot! Caribbean Resorts Are Having Fire Sales

By Frommer's Staff

WeJustGotBack.com

Wow, we can't remember a better time to book a family getaway in the Caribbean, with killer deals and special promotions dropping out of the sky every day. Still, we've learned the hard way that deals aren't always as good as they seem at first glance. So we got out our calculators and did the math on four seemingly terrific deals. Here's a peek at how we separated the sunny steals from the washouts.

Bailout Package at Aruba's Westin

Everybody's looking for a bailout these days -- but as we've all seen, not all bailouts are worth having. Take the Vacation Bailout package at Aruba's Westin resort : If you book a six-night stay, you get a $200 resort credit and one night free. Sounds great, right?

The 481-room resort has a beautiful beach and awesome freeform swimming pool, and offers plenty of places to spend that resort credit, such as the spa, casino, and solid (but, alas, not free) kids' program for ages 6 to 12. Its Destination Club features crafts, sandcastle-building, iguana-feeding, a Little Chefs cooking class, and Friday evening s'more roasts.

When we priced a trip with the bailout package rate (factoring in the resort credit), a room with two queen beds came to about $2,300 for six nights -- a $700 savings compared to normal rates. The Vacation Bailout must be booked by December 31, but you can travel through April 16, 2009.

Deal or no deal? It's a deal, but not as good as you'd think. Book the resort's " Better Tomorrows " package instead, which gives you 50% off for every other night you stay (thus averaging a 25% savings over two nights). It brings the same six-night total to $2,050 -- not only $250 cheaper than the bailout package, but all the savings go back to you. Now that 's what we call a bailout. To take advantage of the Better Tomorrows package, you must arrive Thursday through Sunday, and travel by March 31, 2009.

Save 50% at All-Inclusive Almond Resorts

Wow! Half-price Caribbean deals keep landing at our feet. This one is offered by Almond Resorts, which has five all-inclusive properties on Barbados and St. Lucia. Four of the properties welcome families, while one is adults-only. Rates include unlimited food and beverage (á la carte, buffet-style, and room-service) and most activities, including kids' programming for kids, from newborns to teens.

Of the four family-friendly properties, the two least expensive options are those on St. Lucia, the Almond Smugglers Cove Resort and Almond Morgan Bay Resort . With this deal, an all-inclusive four-day/three-night stay for a family of four can be had for as little as $900 if booking land only. Packages including airfare are also available; we price-checked the same four-day stay for a family of four at $3,450 if flying out of New York in January.

Note: American Airlines has increased non-stop service from New York's JFK to St. Lucia three times a week. In addition, American Airlines flies direct from Miami daily, while American Eagle serves St. Lucia from Puerto Rico five times a day.

This offer is available for bookings through December 19. You must travel by February 9, 2009.

Get 50% Off at Wyndham Nassau in The Bahamas

Some deals are more spin than substance, so when we see one that's a guaranteed money-saver we sit up and take notice. The Wyndham Nassau Resort & Crystal Palace Casino is offering a Vacation Stimulus package : stay two consecutive nights between now and the end of 2009 and get the next two nights free. That translates into a hefty 50% discount. The package also includes a $100 food and beverage credit for use at the resort. Rates begin at $309 per night for an oceanview room, so a four-night stay would cost from $618 -- averaging just $155 a night (plus dining credit). The booking deadline is January 31, 2009. The fine print says the number of available with this deal are limited, so don't wait too long if you want specific travel dates.

Winter Sale on St. Maarten

Faced with a sickly global economy and airline route cutbacks, the tourist offices of Caribbean islands have been stepping up promotions to entice travelers to their tropical shores. Case in point: The island of St. Maarten is running a "2009 Winter Sale" that offers a 15% discount on regular rates at nine resorts on the island. You need to book by January 31, 2009, and travel between December 20 and April 30, 2009. Stay seven nights or longer, and you'll also get $100 in "spending credits" good at nearly 50 island restaurants, spas, nightspots, and spas.

Times have been tough for tourism in St. Maarten, and deals are plentiful. So we decided to see if the winter sale was really the best deal on the table right now. Here's what we found:

  • Three of the hotels participating in the winter sale -- La Vista Hotel, Mary's Boon Hotel, and Oyster Bay -- are not running any additional deals, so the 15% discount is the best option.
  • Two hotels that are participating in the winter sale -- Coral Beach Club and Turquoise Shell Inn -- are offering other promotions that offer the equivalent of 15% savings. Note: We question the kid-friendliness of Turquoise Shell Inn, as it doesn't accept children under 5.

Here's where things get more interesting:

  • At the Princess Heights Hotel, a "book early" special gives a 20% discount for stays booked by December 14 (less than two weeks away, so hurry). The deal also includes a free rental car.
  • Sister resorts Sonesta Great Bay and Sonesta Maho Beach are both offering discounts of up to 35% for stays between December 20 and January 31, 2009. Savings are on a sliding scale depending on number of nights stayed; you save 25% when you stay two to four nights, and more when you visit for five to nine nights.
  • Divi Little Bay Beach Resort is advertising two specials on its site. The "beat the clock" deal lets you save 30% if you stay before December 20. You can also save 30% by reserving before December 20 and traveling between March 15 and December 23, 2009.

Deal or no deal? While a 15% discount seems pretty good at face value, it's anemic when you look at the big picture at some of the partipating resorts. In fact, you can do twice as well by booking other online deals at four of the participating hotels. You can save 30% at Divi Little Bay Beach Resort and up to 35% if you book at least five nights at Sonesta Great Bay or Sonesta Maho Beach.

'Like a bomb going off': Fire rips through RVs at Camping World in Allegheny Township

Brian C. Rittmeyer

An early-morning fire damaged or destroyed more than a dozen recreational vehicles Wednesday at Camping World on Route 356 in Allegheny Township.

Neighbors reported the fire to Westmoreland County 911 about 4:40 a.m. after explosions roused them from sleep, Allegheny Township police Chief Dan Uncapher said.

Rachel Ramsey, who has lived next to the business for six months, said she saw three vehicles on fire. Uncapher said 15 vehicles were involved. A Mercedes conversion van and 14 other campers were damaged or destroyed.

“It sounded like a bomb going off,” Ramsey said.

Ash and other bits of debris littered Ramsey’s yard and above-ground swimming pool.

A neighbor across the street, who declined to give her name, said booms woke up her and her husband, and they kept hearing explosions and loud pops. She has two cats who, she said, were “freaked out” from all the noise.

“I was nervous. I was scared,” Ramsey said. “It was spreading pretty quickly.”

The explosions neighbors heard likely were propane tanks and other combustible equipment and materials on the vehicles, Uncapher said.

“It looked like it originated from one location,” he said. “They’re all packed together in the back. Where it comes from is yet to be determined.”

The business was not occupied at the time, and no one was hurt, Uncapher said. There was no damage to the building.

Firefighters from 10 departments responded.

A manager of Camping World who did not identify himself said company policy prohibits employees from speaking about the incident. He said the dealership remains open to customers and business is continuing as normal.

The vehicles that burned were parked behind the business. The area is under video surveillance, and that footage will be reviewed by investigators, Uncapher said.

A state police fire marshal is investigating the cause.

The best US travel deals for January

Caroline Tanner

Though much of our focus recently has been on securing the best Black Friday and Cyber Monday travel deals , the deals don't stop in the new year. In fact, January is a prime time for budget-conscious travelers to continue saving money.

From New York City to Napa Valley (and many destinations in between), there are many places across America that you can visit on a budget when the first month of the year rolls around.

Here's how to save even more money when traveling in January.

New York City: Hotel Week

Although it seems like New York City is always expensive, NYC Hotel Week offers travelers the chance to save up to 23% at more than 140 properties across the five boroughs for stays between Jan. 3 and Feb. 12.

The discount is for standard room rates at brands like Hyatt , Marriott and Hilton , among others.

For example, with the promotion, cash rates for a stay on Jan. 3 at the Hyatt Centric Times Square New York in a standard room with a king-size bed start at $216 (excluding taxes and fees). The same room on that date would otherwise set you back $234 for the member rate, $247 for the World of Hyatt members advance purchase rate and $280 for the standard nonmember rate. So, you could save $64 by choosing this special promotion.

To take advantage of this promo, visit NYC & Company's official website . From there, you will be directly linked to special booking pages for each hotel where the promotional code should already be applied. If a code is not automatically entered, try using the code "HTLWK" to view Hotel Week prices.

If you end up visiting the city for Hotel Week, be sure to check out NYC & Company's other NYC Winter Outing offerings from Jan. 17 through Feb. 12. During this time, visitors and locals can get special reservations at the city's top restaurants during NYC Restaurant Week , two-for-one Broadway tickets during NYC Broadway Week and two-for-one tickets to popular attractions and museums during NYC Must-See Week .

The average domestic round-trip airfare for January 2023 is $230, but the average flight to New York City in January costs $190, according to data provided by the booking site Hopper.

Some of the airports with affordable round-trip flights to LaGuardia Airport (LGA) and Newark Liberty International Airport (EWR) in January include:

  • Nashville International Airport (BNA), starting at $77 on Spirit.
  • Boston Logan International Airport (BOS), starting at $138 on JetBlue, American Airlines, United Airlines and Delta Air Lines.
  • O'Hare International Airport (ORD), starting at $148 on both United and Delta.

Other domestic cities: Chicago and Los Angeles

Though generally less expensive to visit than New York City, Chicago is also an option in winter; January is the cheapest month to fly to the Windy City. During January, flights drop an average of 33% in price, according to booking portal Kayak , which says to book at least two weeks before departure to score a flight priced below average.

The average round-trip flight to Chicago in January is $187, while the average hotel room costs $140 per night, per Hopper data.

Last month, we found flights from across the U.S. to Chicago at the start of the year for less than $200 round trip , including on United, American, Delta and Southwest. Those flights are still available at the same price.

For example, you can currently book round-trip flights to ORD from the following airports:

  • BOS and Bradley International Airport (BDL), starting at $118 on Delta and United.
  • Denver International Airport (DEN), starting at $68 on Frontier.
  • George Bush Intercontinental Airport (IAH) and Philadelphia International Airport (PHL), starting at $114 on American.

With your well-priced flight in hand, consider the below Chicago properties, which have starting rates at a little more than $100 per night:

  • Hyatt House Chicago / West Loop-Fulton Market, where rates start at $113 per night.
  • Hyatt Centric Chicago Magnificent Mile, where rates start at $127 per night.
  • The Drake (Hilton), where rates start at $131 per night.
  • Hyatt Regency Chicago, where rates start at $147 per night.
  • Swissotel Chicago (Accor), where rates start at $152 per night.
  • LondonHouse Chicago, Curio Collection by Hilton, where rates start at $168 per night.
  • Hilton Chicago/Magnificent Mile Suites, where rates start at $168 per night.

If Chicago in the winter is too cold for you (frankly, there is a reason flights are cheap), consider Los Angeles ; flights to the City of Angels are nearly half off their normal price tag, according to Kayak . Those who prefer Northern California will find a slight drop in flights to San Francisco in January as well, Kayak reports .

Though the average round-trip flight to LA is slightly more expensive than to Chicago ($228), the average cost of a hotel room in LA in January is just $118 per night, per Hopper.

Escape the cold of Chicago for sunny LA with round-trip flights to Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) starting at $158 in January on United and American. Or, fly from EWR to LAX for as little as $180 with Alaska, United or JetBlue.

Once you find a flight, know that there are many Hilton-affiliated properties in central LA for less than $200 per night throughout the month, including:

  • DoubleTree by Hilton Hotel Los Angeles Downtown, where rates start at $180 per night.
  • The Wayfarer Downtown LA, Tapestry Collection by Hilton, where rates start at $191 per night.
  • Hilton Checkers Los Angeles, where rates start at $193 per night.

Two Hyatt properties are available at similar rates. Hotel Figueroa has rooms for as little as $141 per night, while Tommie Hollywood rooms are bookable starting at $185 per night.

Although IHG and Marriott properties are more expensive, you can still find good rates with these brands, too, including:

  • The Westin Bonaventure Hotel & Suites, Los Angeles (Marriott), where rates start at $203 per night.
  • Hotel Indigo Los Angeles Downtown (IHG), where rates start at $212 per night.
  • Sheraton Grand Los Angeles (Marriott), where rates start at $229 per night.
  • InterContinental Los Angeles Downtown (IHG), where rates start at $244 per night.

National parks and winter-themed activities

travel fire sales

Not only can you usually get a reprieve from the usual national park crowds by visiting during the winter months, but you may also enjoy more comfortable conditions when visiting certain parks, such as those in desert settings that can see temperatures climb above 100 degrees in the summer.

Related: 10 of the best national parks to visit during winter

From Joshua Tree National Park and Death Valley National Park in California to Grand Canyon National Park in Arizona, there are several national parks in the U.S. that feature desert landscapes.

Because most national parks welcome fewer visitors when temperatures drop, you'll usually find flight deals.

For example, Kayak reports that January is the cheapest month to fly domestically to larger airports by Yellowstone National Park, including Casper-Natrona County International Airport (CPR), Salt Lake City International Airport (SLC) and Billings-Logan International Airport (BIL). Oftentimes, these airports are less expensive to fly to than smaller regional airports closer to the parks.

Similarly, United currently has round-trip flights in January from EWR to Bangor International Airport (BGR) — the closest major airport to Maine's Acadia National Park — that start at $188.

Time your visit to coincide with Martin Luther King Jr. Day and you may even be able to enter for free: The holiday is one of five dates when entrance fees are waived . For 2023, the holiday falls on Jan. 16.

An added bonus to visiting in January is that there are winter-specific activities only available at certain parks during winter. For example, at Yellowstone, you can take a guided snowmobile tour. You can also go skiing, sledding, snowshoeing, ice climbing, ice skating and snow tubing at a number of parks, including Acadia, Yosemite National Park in California, Rocky Mountain National Park in Colorado and Olympic National Park in Washington.

Wine country in winter

travel fire sales

Northern California's wine country — specifically Napa Valley — is also far less crowded and cheaper to visit in January, as the fall harvest season is over and temperatures have fallen.

Beyond saving money, you'll have the chance to enjoy some timely events specific to winter, including Napa Valley Restaurant Week , which takes place from Jan. 20-29 in 2023. You'll also find special deals from wineries, such as the Winter in the Wineries Passport , which allows visitors to taste and tour 16 wineries for only $75.

If you plan to stop in San Francisco as part of your Napa Valley visit, you can save some bucks along the way — hotels there often cost less than what you'll pay to stay in the Napa area . The following are just a few San Francisco hotels currently showing availability in January for less than $250 a night:

  • Hilton San Francisco Union Square, where rates start at $160 per night.
  • Parc 55 San Francisco — a Hilton Hotel, where rates start at $174 per night.
  • The Westin St. Francis San Francisco on Union Square (Marriott), where rates start at $201 per night.
  • Kimpton Hotel Enso (IHG), where rates start at $216 per night.
  • JW Marriott San Francisco Union Square, where rates start at $228 per night.
  • InterContinental Mark Hopkins San Francisco (IHG), where rates start at $244 per night.

Related: Book this, not that: San Francisco hotels

Bottom line

The average hotel room in the U.S. costs $230 per night in January, according to Hopper, and it can be hard to find ways to cut expenses when you travel, even during historically slow seasons like winter. Fortunately, there are some domestic destinations that you can visit without breaking the bank.

To help you stick to a smaller budget, start your search with Google Flights to see if you can find a timely flight deal. Remember to look for limited-time offers for reduced rates at hotels, too, such as the annual NYC Hotel Week deal for properties throughout New York City.
