On this exciting private tour of Salt Spring Island, your guide can pick you up anywhere in Victoria, BC. Your trip begins with a scenic drive from Victoria up the Saanich Peninsula, where you board a BC ferry. Enjoy a pleasant 30-minute crossing through the stunning archipelagos of the Gulf Islands.

Just like Victoria, Salt Spring Island has a history that dates back to the mid-1850s. Explore its rich and interesting history as you see old cemeteries, churches, heritage homes, and ancient apple orchards and sheep farms en route. The art galleries of Salt Spring Island feature First Nation and contemporary British Columbia art.

The Island is an artist colony with famous artists like Jim Erickson, winner of the Oscar for set decoration on Lincoln, and world-renowned wildlife artist Robert Bateman, who lives on the island and has an art gallery in Victoria’s Inner Harbour that is well worth visiting.

Part of the Salt Spring Island tour is the spectacular drive to the various island highlights. The seaside scenery, rural mountain roads, and fields are unforgettable. You may wish to go up Mount Maxwell, the highest point on the island, for an exhilarating view of the bays, neighbouring islands, and parts of the greater Victoria region.

The island boasts an abundance of wildlife and foul, Garry oak forests, and beautiful lakes. With some luck, we may catch an eagle soaring high above the trees. Visit local vineyards, a cheese farm, and tour into the heart of a vibrant artist community. On Saturdays during the summer months, we can visit Salt Spring Island’s famous market featuring crafts, jewelry, pottery, food, and music.

KAYAK SALT SPRING

Customized, private kayak tours for 2 to 6 people, starting at $160 per group.

Create your adventure!

Tours available from May until mid-October 2024, weather  permitting

Your experienced guide, John, has degrees in biology and education.  He has logged over 200 commercial kayaking days.

New!  Kayak sails are now standard on our Delta14s and 20Ts on all tours! (Not all tours present an opportunity for kayak sailing, but the boats are rigged with sails for those times when the wind is right.)

Kayak Salt Spring's mission is to provide family-oriented, educational, and environmentally friendly kayaking adventures that promote the natural beauty and preservation of Salt Spring Island's wilderness.  We use Canadian made Delta 14s and 20Ts on all of our tours.

WALKER HOOK TOUR  2 - 3 HRS. (weather  permitting ) 2 nautical miles

Walker Hook Beach, accessible only by boat, is the largest sandy beach on Salt Spring Island. After a leisurely 30 to 45 minute paddle past eagles nests and picturesque shoreline, we stop for a break.  We have plenty of time to wander the beach before returning.  Depending on the weather, this can be a short easy, flat water paddle or an exciting adventure.

Private 2 person tour starting at $160 per group (additional people $60 per person, maximum group size 6 people)

ELEANOR POINT AND RUSSELL ISLAND TOURS (weather and tides permitting) Time and distance estimates are shown below Russell Island

Eleanor point.

Starting from Kingfisher Cove, we paddle past pretty bays before rounding Eleanor Point.  From there, the coastline changes to kelp beds and sandstone cliffs.   This rugged coastline, that gets pounded  by winter storms, is a treat to paddle  during  the summer months.  After an hour on the water, we select one of several sandy bays to stop for a break.  With spectacular shoreline, the return trip provides opportunities  to  explore nooks and crannies that were were missed on the way out.   This is a good tour for anyone who likes geology.

 RUSSELL ISLAND

For a little extra fun, walk the beautiful  trails to the old Hawaiian homestead. Russell Island is part of Gulf Island National Park Reserve .  During the walk, John teaches about native plants that live in the Coastal   Douglas  Fir Zone.  This stop also adds some extra on-water scenery to the Eleanor short tour.

If the weather doesn't cooperate for the trip to Eleanor Point, we can do a short tour to Russell and some scenic areas towards Fulford Harbour.

When the tide is too low to launch from Kingfisher Cove, we can still do a Russell Island Tour from Isabella Point Road in Fulford Harbour.

PREVOST ISLAND TOUR (weather  permitting ) 4 to 5 HR,  6 - 8 nautical miles

Enjoy the rugged beauty of the Gulf Islands National Park Reserve at James Bay on Prevost Island. After an easy paddle down Long Harbour, we reach the Captain Passage.  A short but sometimes challenging crossing takes us to Prevost Island.  There are lots of trails and beaches to explore at James Bay, so a minimum one hour stop is recommended. Back on the water, we explore more rugged coastline before the crossing back to Salt Spring.  Although this tour can be done at any time,  it's best features, intertidal life and large beaches, can only be seen on a low tide.

Private 2 person tour starting at $225 per group (additional people $60/person, maximum group size 6)

PORTLAND ISLAND TOUR (weather permitting) 6-8 HR  8-10 nautical miles

Looking for an all day adventure?  Consider doing a circumnavigation of Portland Island in the Gulf Islands National Park Reserve.  Starting at Kingfisher Cove or Isabella Point Rd, we paddle up Fulford Harbour, making a stop at Russell  Island, before crossing to Portland.  Once at Portland Island, we make stops at Arbutus Point and Shell Beach before crossing back.  Washrooms are available  at every stop.  You can expect about 4 to 5 hours of paddling and 2 hours on land with 3 or more breaks. This tour is weather sensitive and will only be done under idea conditions.

 $300 per group

(additional people $60/person, maximum group size 6)

20230519_181938.jpg

SANSUM NARROWS TOURS (update Sept. 7, 23   -  due to access road conditions, this tour is probably done for the season  )

2.5 hr  3 nautical miles or 4 hr  6 nautical miles  .

Situated between Maple Mountain and Mt. Maxwell, this tour offers beautiful scenery .  The northern section of Sansum Narrows is somewhat protected from the southeast winds and is often our best option on windy days. The combination of non-turbulent currents up to 3 knots and wind can make this trip either a challenging paddle or an easy flat water tour.  If we get the tides just right, we can paddle into a small cave (at your own risk).

2.5 hour $175 per group

4 hour $225 per group

LONG HARBOUR PADDLE 2 - 3 HR  3.5 nautical miles

With great protection from strong winds, this beautiful trip can be done on almost any day no matter what the weather.   Starting deep in the harbour, we head out past the ferry terminal and beautiful  houses towards Nose Point.  Coming  back on the opposite side there are opportunities to check out little bays and islands  including Clamshell Islet.

(this tour has no stops or snacks)

$160 per group

Kayak Sailing in Long Harbour ( time, distance and price are the same as the Long Harbour Paddle above )

Our Pacific Action sails have arrived and we have finished testing them.  You can lean more about Pacific  Action products  here .

We plan to have Pacific Action sails available for purchase later in the season.

Salt Spring Studio Tour Logo

Check out the map and follow the blue and white SHEEP signs.

If you’d like to taste the very best of what salt spring has to offer, nothing compares to the mix of creativity, hand-made art and world-class craftsmanship that you can enjoy on the island’s famous studio tour..

The Studio Tour makes it possible for you to watch artists while they work, following their passion. You can try on some unique jewellery, attend a wine tasting, or watch art come to life! You can watch an artisan hand-weave a functional placemat or a beautiful scarf…, and even try weaving yourself!

tours salt spring island

Depending on your schedule, enjoy as many unique artisans as you choose, and you can still have enough time before the ferry to pick up a one-of-a-kind piece for yourself!

Many studios produce perfect gifts for weddings, anniversaries, birthdays, or…, that perfect piece for the very special people in your life.

tours salt spring island

With 18 studios to discover on the Tour, all you require to enjoy the studios of your choice is a current Studio Tour Map and a bit of spare time. Some studios offer a one-of-a-kind experience, such as a workshop tour or a hands-on demonstration on creating a work of art.

Our Studio Tour’s diverse selection also includes freshly-baked goods, sumptuous wines and perfectly-aged cheeses that you can enjoy while you see how they’re made.

Artists are usually present to answer questions about their work and to help you understand the creative process and the Salt Spring way of life.

Our colourful map outlines what each artist creates as well as the location of their studio. Our free maps are available at B.C tourism information centers, in marinas, hotels and B&Bs, on all three ferries serving the island.

How do you know if you are at one of our studios? Just look for our trademark black sheep sign pointing the way to a unique experience. Numbers on the signs, map and in the Tour Book allow you find the studios that match your interests.

This island is a perfect getaway from Vancouver or Victoria and I’m here to share the top things to do to help you start planning your perfect Salt Spring Island weekend itinerary! From paddle-boarding on the beaches to winery tours and lavender farms, Salt spring Island has something for everyone.

Salt Spring Island brings out the artisan and crafty side of their visitors with plenty of local goodies to try. Make sure to keep reading and check out our favourite things to do on this charming island!

Table of Contents

How to get to Salt Spring Island

tours salt spring island

Salt Spring Island is one of BC’s many Gulf Islands and is located close to Victoria and Nanaimo. There are a few different options for your ferry to Salt Spring Island, but you must get to Vancouver Island first. If you’re coming from Vancouver, you will be taking either the Horseshoe Bay ferry to Nanaimo or the Tsawwassen ferry to Swartz Bay.

From Victoria’s Swartz Bay, you will be taking the ferry to Fulford Harbour. This is our favourite ferry because it is larger and the route is prettier with better views. This ferry will take 35 minutes. Another option from Nanaimo’s Departure Bay would be to drive 15 minutes to Crofton to take the Crofton ferry. This ferry is smaller but will only take 25 minutes to Vesuvius Harbour.

Always make sure to check ferry times and consider scheduling your ferry tickets in advanced if you’re travelling on weekends. The Sunday ferries often sell out quickly and you won’t want to be stuck at the harbour waiting for hours. Check out BC Ferry times and schedules here .

Where to Stay on Salt Spring Island

We’ve enjoyed different stays on all of our visits to Salt Spring Island! There are plenty of Airbnbs and great hotels to choose from. Since the island is small, you’ll choose between staying near the city centre or about 15-20 minutes out in the wilderness. Here I’ll share our top 3 options for accommodations on Salt Spring Island.

Salty Stay Cabin

tours salt spring island

Salty Stay Cabin is an Airbnb that is owned by a local Salt Spring Islander under the brand SALT. SALT is their locally produced shop that you can visit in Upper Ganges or shop online. You can find more details on their website or through Airbnb.

The cabin itself is located about 20 minutes from Ganges on a private road next to Mehinick Beach. This was a great base to explore other beaches close by and Ruckle Park was minutes away. We loved this stay because it felt like a modern cabin getaway, with lots of natural light and outdoor space.

Harbor House Hotel

Harbour House Hotel is a fantastic option located directly in Ganges. We loved this location because it was so close to everything we needed and acts as a great base to do grocery shopping or head to the local restaurants. Our room was facing towards the harbour and we enjoyed sunset views over the water during our stay.

Camp in Ruckle Park

tours salt spring island

If you’re interested in camping during your visit to Salt Spring Island, make sure to check out Ruckle Park’s campground. There are more than 80 sites and you can reserve online through this link . Ruckle Park is beautiful and a must-see on your trip to Salt Spring Island and worth a night of camping.

Top 15 Things to do on Salt Spring Island

tours salt spring island

If you’re planning your weekend away on Salt Spring Island, I’ve come up with a list of the top 15 things to do on Salt Spring Island to help with your itinerary! There’s so much to do on this small island, and luckily you’ll only have to drive 30-45 minutes to get across the entire island. Keep reading for our top 15 things to do on Salt Spring Island!

1. Hike Mount Erskine

tours salt spring island

Mount Erskine is definitely the best hike on Salt Spring Island! We really enjoyed the views from the summit, and the hike was steep but enjoyable. The trail took us through a beautiful mossy forest and gave us views overlooking the ocean towards Vancouver Island. Check out trail reports on AllTrails for more statistics!

2. Take your 4×4 up Mount Maxwell

tours salt spring island

We think this is the next best view from Salt Spring Island, and it’s even cooler that you need to drive a 4×4 to get up to the top! You can definitely hike up the road if you do not have a proper vehicle. This bumpy, pot-holled, steep drive is best enjoyed after a fresh rain so you can get you 4×4 muddy! The views overlooking the ocean towards Fulford Harbour & Vancouver Island are incredible.

3. Picnic at Ruckle Park & Ruckle Heritage Farm

tours salt spring island

Ruckle Provincial Park is a beautiful, coastal park on Salt Spring Island with plenty of day-hikes. We enjoyed walking beside the ocean in the mossy, green forest! One of the best parts of this park is that Ruckle Heritage Farm is located right at the beginning so you can check-out the local farm goods or say hello to the animals before your hike.

4. Visit Salt Spring Cheese

tours salt spring island

Salt Spring Cheese creates some of the best artisan goat cheese we’ve ever had, and visiting their farm is definitely one of my top recommendations. The free-range farm features chickens and goats that you can say hello to, and wander over to their garden and cheese shop. You can order items to take home or small plates to enjoy on their outdoor patio.

5. Check out the Saturday Market

Salt Spring Island’s Saturday Market is definitely a must on your weekend trip to the island! With over 120 local vendors, you’ll definitely find something to take home from their world-class artisans and food producers. You’ll enjoy browsing the market and meeting local farmers and artists!

6. Shopping in Ganges

tours salt spring island

Ganges is definitely up and coming in the food and shopping scene! Upper Ganges is where you’ll find most of the boutique shops on Salt Spring Island, and make sure to check out Francis Bread, Woodshed Provisions, SALT and OMG Boutique.

7. Try Salt Spring Wild Cider

tours salt spring island

Salt Spring Wild Cider is a must on your weekend getaway to Salt Spring Island, and I recommend going on a sunny day to sit on their patio! They offer delicious small plates and patas shareable plates along with their home-brewed cider. We loved the Ginger cider the best, so we took one home with us. Their patio is also dog-friendly!

8. Visit Sacred Mountain Lavender Farm

tours salt spring island

You must visit Sacred Mountain Lavender farm on Salt Spring Island. They have a beautiful property and it would be amazing to see when the lavender is in full bloom. Their boutique shop offers plenty of lavender-goods, and we especially loved their hand-made soaps and lavender honey!

9. Grab a beer at Salt Spring Brewing

We love checking out local breweries, and Salt Spring Island has it’s own Salt Spring Brewery for you to try! There’s a great outdoor patio for you to enjoy some beer and snacks, or head inside to their tasting room.

10. Check out the local Farm Stands

One of the coolest things you’ll notice on Salt Spring Island is the amount of farm stands set up on the side of the road! We found farm stands for eggs, baked goods, and even popsicles. They operate on an honour system and some of them even look like mini vending machines!

11. Go Beach-Hopping

tours salt spring island

There are some fantastic beaches to visit on Salt Spring Island and each offer their own coastal vibes. We enjoyed Beddis Beach the most, for its white shell beach and dog-friendly area. We also checked out Vesuvius Beach and Mehinick Beach.

12. Go for a Winery Tour

Salt Spring Island is known for it’s great wine and are 2 wineries you must visit on Salt Spring Island! Gary Oaks Winery and Salt Spring Vineyard are the two best wineries on the island and a perfect way to spend an afternoon.

13. Paddle-boarding or Kayaking

tours salt spring island

Salt Spring Island is great for paddle-boarding and kayaking because of the more calm waters around the island, and Ganges Harbour is a great spot to try for beginners. You can find rentals and tours from Salt Spring Adventure Co .

14. Rent a Bicycle around the island

Another great option if you’re not interested in water sports would be to rent a bicycle from Salt Spring Adventure Co and enjoy a bike ride around the island! Since it’s such a small island you can complete a loop in a day if you’d like, or find local trails and maps that are provided with your rental.

15. Explore Fulford Harbour

I wanted to include Fulford Harbour as a great option on your last day on Salt Spring Island. I love the ferry from here, so if you aim to catch the ferry you should arrive an hour or 1.5 hours ahead of your sailing to explore the harbour. You’ll find a small cafe to grab a coffee, pastries or sandwiches and plenty of spots to enjoy while watching the waves. You can explore around the harbour to find sea creatures and we saw so many starfish!

Restaurants on Salt Spring Island

tours salt spring island

There are plenty of fantastic restaurant options on Salt Spring Island! I’m here to share some of our favourite shops and restaurants for you to choose from on your trip to Salt Spring Island.

  • Moby’s Pub
  • Salt Spring Wild Cider

  • Treehouse Cafe
  • Fernwood Cafe
  • Rock Salt Restaurant & Cafe
  • Auntie Pesto’s
  • Embe Bakery
  • Oystercatcher

When is the best time to Visit Salt Spring Island?

tours salt spring island

Salt Spring Island enjoys year-round mild temperatures, but the best times to visit Salt Spring Island would be in the Summer or early Fall. In the Spring, you can often enjoy rainy days and muddy trails. In the summer, you’ll be enjoying a lot more sunshine and the beaches will be packed with people!

We’ve travelled to Salt Spring Island in the winter, and while it’s still beautiful, remote and slow, you’ll notice that most restaurants, shops and farm stands are closed for the winter. Some of the Salt Spring island charm is lost during the Winter, so I recommend visiting in other seasons.

Spending a weekend on Salt Spring Island

tours salt spring island

Salt Spring Island is a small island getaway that can be enjoyed in a weekend! I recommend visiting this island for a long-weekend trip or for a short 2-day getaway from Vancouver. You do not need to spend much time on Salt Spring Island to see everything, but extending your trip will allow you to slow down and relax away from the mainland!

I definitely recommend visiting Salt Spring island and adding it to your BC bucket-list! This is a perfect weekend getaway and you’ll enjoy the charming island way of life. If you’re looking for more BC Island adventures, make sure to check out our Vancouver Island blog posts !

The Salty Cat - 43 passenger

Although her official name is The Pride of Victoria, we affectionatley call her The Salty Cat.  Custom built for the Canadian Coast Guard in 1969, she spent many seasons on the unruly West Coast of Vancouver Island braving huge seas, high winds, and countless ocean liners transporting goods from around the World to Vancouver, Seattle and beyond.  She is 45 feet (13.7 metres) long, and 17 feet (5.2 metres) wide making her far more stable than most ships out there.  So if you have ever felt a little sea sick in the past, I'm confident you will be comfortable on our beamy catamaran.

The Salty Cat is a Transport Canada certified vessel licensed to carry 43 passengers.  Every year we haul her out of the water for rigourous inspections, upgrades and routine maintenance.  Safety of all on board is our number one priority and we are equipped with a 50 passenger liferaft, Transport Canada approved lifejackets, including ones for children, fire suppression systems in each of our engine rooms, numerous fire extinguishers, our own fire hose above deck, and we practice safety drills weekly.

The Salty Cat is fully licensed and carrys a range of local wines and beers, plus select spirits, should you choose to enjoy a cocktail on our journey.  We have a head on board (bathroom), a galley (kitchen), a great sound system (so feel free to bring along cd's or an ipod), and numerous decks offer excellent photo opportunities giving uninterrupted 360 degree panoramic views.
