Lightning McQueen and Mater are in front of the Courthouse when Lizzie drives by. She says good morning to Lightning and Mater in a rude way, but she says it in a nice way to the statue of Stanley . Lightning McQueen asks Mater how Lizzie and Stanley met. Mater replies by telling one of his stories, which "all started last week."

The story starts with him putting up a new town sign with a clock on it. The sign falls on Mater, and the clock ends up on his "nose." Mater sneezes, and then disappears.

He ends up inside the Tail Light Caverns. He exits the caverns to go tell everyone back in town. However, when he does, he can't find the town, but he does see a car at a nearby spring. When Mater gets closer to the car, he discovers that it's Stanley! Stanley asks Mater if he needs a radiator cap. When Mater says no, Stanley leaves to go to California in search of customers. Mater realizes that if Stanley didn't stay, there wouldn't be a Radiator Springs in the future! So, he goes to the present, gets Lightning, and they both go back to the past, where Mater removes Lightning's radiator cap and calls out to Stanley, saying that there's a car that needs a radiator cap (Lightning). So, Stanley gives Lightning a new radiator cap. Two cars that also need radiator caps enter the scene, and Stanley leads them to the spring, where the cars get a "drink." Mater suggests that Stanley build a town right next to "this here radiator spring." Stanley likes the idea, and even comes up with a name for the town right then and there: Radiator Springs . While Stanley was planning how to build the town, Mater and Lightning travel to the future to speed things up a bit.

Mater and Lightning then travel to 1927. Stanley shows them the town. Then, Stanley takes note of a Model T (which turns out to be Lizzie) that arrives in town. Lizzie breaks down, so Mater helps her out. Lizzie sees Lightning and appears to be falling in love with him, and Mater realizes that if Lizzie falls in love with Lightning, then she won't fall in love with Stanley, and then Stanley will leave town, and there'd be no Radiator Springs! But then Lizzie asks Lightning to get out of the way, revealing that she had her eye on Stanley, not Lightning, as Mater thought. Lightning introduces Lizzie and Stanley. Stanley took Lizzie to his spring so that she could get a drink. Then he took her to get a new radiator cap. Then, Lightning and Mater leave.

They reappear in Radiator Springs at the time that Lizzie and Stanley get married. After getting married, they went honeymooning at Comfy Caverns. Then, Mater and Lightning leave, and Mater finishes his story.

Lightning says that there's no such thing as time travel, but then Lizzie comes and thanks Lightning for introducing her and Stanley. Mater says, "And that's how you make history."

Redick to be inducted into Duke Athletics Hall of Fame

Duke University Athletics , Duke University Athletics

Eric Johnson , Sports Anchor / Reporter

DURHAM, N.C. – Roanoke native and Cave Spring High School graduated JJ Redick has gotten another “call to the hall”--this time from his Alma Mater Duke University.

Redick, one of the most prolific scorers in NCAA history with 2,769 career points as a Blue Devil, was a two-time National Player of the Year pick in 2005 and 2006 while helping Duke to a four-year record of 116-23 with two league regular season championships, three conference tournament crowns and four NCAA Tournament berths including a march to the Final Four in 2004.

During his sophomore campaign, the two-time team captain set the ACC record for consecutive free throws made (54) en route to establishing the league single-season standard for free throw percentage (.953). The three-time All-America, three-time All-ACC, three-time ACC All-Tournament, two-time ACC Tournament MVP and two-time ACC Player of the Year honoree graduated from Duke as the NCAA all-time leader in three-point field goals (457) and the ACC career leader in total points.

The Roanoke, Va., native and two-time ACC scoring leader capped his collegiate career with the 2006 Sullivan Award, an honor presented annually to the nation’s top amateur athlete and had his jersey No. 4 retired by Duke on February 4, 2007. Redick was a first-round selection (No. 11 overall) of the Orlando Magic in the 2006 NBA Draft, and compiled totals of 12,028 points, 1,903 rebounds, 1,862 assists and 1,950 three-point field goals over 15 seasons with the Magic, Los Angeles Clippers, Philadelphia 76ers, New Orleans Pelicans, Milwaukee Bucks and Dallas Mavericks. The league leader in three-point field goal percentage (.475) during the 2015-16 season, Redick closed his career ranking among the top 20 players in NBA history in both three-point field goals made and three-point field goal percentage (.415).

Redick is fresh off of his first NBA Finals call as a color analyst for ESPN.

Roger Federer Holds Court at Dartmouth Commencement

A resilient Class of 2024 celebrates after weathering challenges.

Roger Federer delivering his commencement address

Commencement Day at Dartmouth

Members of the Class of 2024 first arrived on campus during the COVID-19 pandemic, then lived and learned through politically turbulent times, showing extraordinary resilience over the past four years.

On Commencement Day, they managed to celebrate their achievements in front of an audience of 11,000 who weathered a rainy morning to share the moment with them and also hear from tennis great Roger Federer . Another 7,700 watched on the livestream on Sunday.

Dartmouth conferred more than 1,150 degrees to undergraduates from 49 states, Puerto Rico, Washington, D.C., and 42 other countries, and 902 graduate or professional degrees. And Federer, an eight-time Wimbledon champion and philanthropist, served up what he called three “tennis lessons,” applying his time-tested sports philosophy broadly to life’s most daunting challenges.

First, “‘Effortless’ is a myth. People would say my play was effortless,” said Federer, who was known for his graceful style on court. In fact, Federer said he worked hard to perfect his technique and be patient and disciplined and is proudest of victories he earned when the competition became fierce.

“Because they prove that you can win not just when you are at your best, but especially when you aren’t. Most of the time it’s not about having a gift. It’s about having grit.”

Federer’s second lesson: perfection is impossible. “In the 1,526 singles matches I played in my career, I won almost 80% of those matches.” Yet he won only 54% of the points he played.

Most of the time it’s not about having a gift. It’s about having grit.

“When you’re playing a point, it is the most important thing in the world,” he explained. “But the truth is, whatever game you play in life, sometimes you’re going to lose. A point, a match, a season, a job: it’s a roller coaster, with many ups and downs.”

Third, Federer reminded the audience, the world is much bigger than a tennis court.

“Even when I was in the top five, it was important to me to have a rewarding life, full of travel, culture, friendships, and especially family,” he said.

President Sian Leah Beilock singing the Alma Mater

Motivated by his mother, Federer, who holds dual citizenship in Switzerland and South Africa, started a foundation when he was only 22 to empower children through education, and it has enabled nearly 3 million children in Switzerland and six countries in southern Africa to get a quality education and helped to train more than 55,000 teachers.

“It’s been an honor—and it’s been humbling,” he said.

Beginning his professional tennis career at 16, Federer never attended college, and he said receiving a Doctor of Humane Letters degree from Dartmouth was his “most unexpected victory ever.”

In addition to Federer, President Sian Leah Beilock presented honorary degrees to :

  • Joy Buolamwini, founder of Algorithmic Justice League, author of Unmasking AI;
  • Former U.S. Rep. Liz Cheney;
  • Mung Chiang, president of Purdue University;
  • Mira Murati, Thayer ’12, chief technology officer, OpenAI;
  • Paul Nakasone, retired general and former director of the National Security Agency;
  • Richard Ranger ’74, a member of the class celebrating its 50th reunion;
  • John Urschel, assistant professor of mathematics, Massachusetts Institute of Technology, and former NFL player;
  • Roy Vagelos, retired chairman and CEO, Merck & Co. Inc.

President Beilock on “finding joy”

In her valedictory address, President Beilock urged graduates to find joy, even in trying times.

“One thing I hope you have learned at Dartmouth is not to seek out the one, irrefutable truth,” she said. “Remember the humanity of your colleagues, friends, neighbors, and understand their points of view, even when they’re in sharp opposition to your own. Understand the massive challenges our country and our world face right now, while not letting those challenges overwhelm you, every waking hour of the day. And know that even in moments of great difficulty, it is still OK to find joy, and encourage others to do the same.”

The graduates and baker tower in the rain

Urging students to understand and learn from history, Beilock noted a “new Commencement tradition here today, as we incorporated the Wampum Belt, given to Dartmouth by the Mohegan Tribe, for the first time in our Commencement procession this morning.”

A reminder of the “long and complicated relations between Dartmouth and the Mohegan Tribe and Indian Country,” Beilock said the belt’s purple beads signify conflict, while its white beads signify cleansing.

“The belt is, in its own way, a treaty: signifying a promise to honor our commitment to the Tribe and the Indigenous peoples of this land. It also reminds us that mutual respect is born through an unwavering dedication to meaningful dialogue. It symbolizes the importance of trying to understand where the other side is coming from, and learning from each other.”

Student speakers

Dartmouth’s history as an institution founded to educate Native Americans was also the focus of the welcoming remarks by Raylen Bark ’24 and Paige Nakai ’24, co-presidents of Native Americans at Dartmouth . “It’s a diversity of Indigenous knowledge and background that truly makes Dartmouth, as we and this institution embark on our next chapters,” said Nakai.

Valedictorian Brian Zheng ’24, who on Saturday was commissioned as second lieutenant in the Army, drew inspiration from his favorite poem, Robert Frost’s Stopping By Woods on a Snowy Evening .

“Every time I read that poem, I can’t help but think of the Dartmouth Class of 2024,” he said. “When we arrived on campus in the fall of 2020, amidst a global pandemic, it truly did not matter who you were or where you came from. You could have been me, a child of immigrants whose middle name, Haixiang, literally translates to ‘flying across the ocean.’ Or you could have been someone who spent their entire life in the Upper Valley before coming to Dartmouth. The important thing was that you chose to spend your time here, in these woods, with these people, for at least a couple of snowy evenings.”

Brian Zheng giving his speech

With curiosity “gained in the woods,” Zheng predicted that “our passion, our caring, our drive, will and must propel us to lift up those around us and to lend a hand to those in need.”

The ceremony included sporadic protests from pro-Palestinian and graduate student-union supporters, with some students walking out during the three-hour ceremony. But for the most part, Commencement 2024 was marked by age-old traditions, ending with the singing of the Alma Mater as students gathered with friends and families near the Green.

Among them: Lexi Dewire ’24, a captain of the women’s tennis team. She loved Federer’s speech.

“I think the part that resonated with me the most was when he said, out of all the things he’s accomplished, he’s only won about 54% of all the points in all of his matches,” Dewire said. “You’re going to lose a lot. You can’t win everything, and each particular point doesn’t matter. It’s the whole match and the whole adventure. It’s not always going to be clean and easy and beautiful, but it’s the outcome that’s important, and whether you accomplish what you need to accomplish, no matter what you went through or how you got there.”

What does Ohio State 5-star WR commit Chris Henry Jr. want in a 2026 quarterback?

youtube time travel mater

For a 2026 quarterback, Ohio State has a selling point not many programs have.

It’s not only the track record of quarterbacks like Justin Fields and C.J. Stroud . It’s not only that head coach Ryan Day and offensive coordinator Chip Kelly are considered gurus.

It’s how Ohio State began its 2026 recruiting class, securing a commitment from five-star wide receiver Chris Henry Jr., the No. 1 player and the No. 1 wide receiver in the country, who is already ranked as the fourth-best recruit in Ohio State history behind quarterback Quinn Ewers , wide receiver Jeremiah Smith and quarterback Terrelle Pryor .

And Henry knows what he wants in a quarterback.

“We want a guy that’s going to go out there and work, who’s going to help us win and is going to be a great leader,” Henry said. “That’s what I’m looking for out of a quarterback.”

Ohio State’s hunt for a quarterback seemingly took a bit of a hit Monday.

Five-star prospect Dia Bell, who participated in an OSU recruiting camp last week and threw with Ohio State 2025 five-star commitment Tavien St. Clair , announced he plans to play for Texas.

At Monday’s recruiting camp, quarterbacks such as Florida four-star Brady Hart and California four-star Jaden O’Neal – two of the top seven quarterbacks in the 2026 class – threw with Henry and in front of Day and Kelly. Hart and O'Neal received offers after their camp performances on Monday.

After Hart threw at Ohio State to earn an offer Monday, he committed to Michigan Tuesday.

Of the quarterbacks who have reported offers from Ohio State, seven have not joined a recruiting class: O'Neal, North Carolina four-star Faizon Brandon, California four-star Brady Smigiel, Illinois four-star Jonas Williams, California four-star Troy Huhn , Georgia four-star Brodie McWhorter and California quarterback Brady Palmer, who earned an offer after throwing alongside Bell at Ohio State last week.

Since 2020, Kyle McCord and Jack Miller III are the only two Ohio State quarterbacks to commit to the program multiple years before enrolling. Assuming St. Clair follows through on his commitment, he would make the third. Ewers committed to the Buckeyes as a junior but reclassified to the 2020 class.

Henry doesn't know which quarterback he will catch passes from at Ohio State. But that does not change his recruiting pitch.

“It’s not really hard,” Henry said. “If you’re a receiver, this is where you want to be. This is the standard here, being at Ohio State.”

Chris Henry Jr. works with Brian Hartline at Ohio State recruiting camp

On Monday, Henry said he had nothing to prove while camping with Ohio State. After working with wide receivers coach Brian Hartline and assistant Devin Jordan , Henry said he was trying to soak in as much information as he could.

“I enjoy it every time,” Henry said. “Just being out here, learning from him, picking up new things. You know, it’s just been great. I always enjoy it.”

Henry said he’s excited about continuing to build his “good relationship” with Kelly with whom he sensed an instant bond.

“I feel like he can bring a lot to the table and win us a lot of games,” Henry said.

Henry spent his sophomore season at Withrow High School in Cincinnati, where he had 1,127 yards and 10 touchdowns on 71 catches. He was a Division II first-team all-state selection.

But Henry will play his junior season at Mater Dei in Santa Ana, California. It is his second transfer, having played for West Clermont High School as a freshman.

This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Lauren Hoselton, a former track-and-field athlete from the University of Mississippi and the founder of Total NIL. The following has been edited for length and clarity.

I am a former track-and-field athlete for the University of Mississippi. In 2021, when new name, image, and likeness rules were implemented for student-athletes, I knew brands wouldn't knock on my door to pay me to show up for a birthday party. Those opportunities usually go to star football and basketball players. So I told myself to get creative and use my entrepreneurial mindset to make money off NIL.

Ole Miss was amazing at helping athletes with opportunities, but NIL was so new that the school didn't really know how much it could do or what it could do. I secured my first NIL deal when our social-enhancement coordinator contacted students about an opportunity with Graduate Hotels. I think I was one of the few people at the school to apply. I got the deal and was paid for my work, including for hosting events like a coffee happy hour at one of the hotel's cafés and when people used my referral code.

From there, I continued to hustle and use platforms such as LinkedIn and the marketplace Opendorse to get NIL deals. I pitched myself to managers in my college town to secure as many brand deals as possible. That year, I secured over 20 sponsorships with brands such as the streaming platform Peacock and the restaurant chain Smoothie King.

NIL also made me think about social media differently. I used to use platforms like Instagram to post cute pictures or for fun. But NIL shifted my mindset to think like a content creator. I became very strategic about what I posted on social media. I tell everyone now, even if you feel silly, make the TikToks. The more engagement you have, the more money you can ask brands for.

Since graduating about two years ago, I've used my experience as a walk-on college athlete to help other student-athletes nationwide navigate brand and sponsorship deals. NIL opened doors for me to go into business for myself and helped me land a full-time job shortly after college.

Building a career in NIL after college

I'm now the vice president of marketing and athlete management at the Grove Collective, an NIL program independent of Ole Miss that raises money from donors and facilitates NIL deals for student-athletes at the university. In my role, I assist about 200 athletes with marketing, social media, and brand partnerships. On a normal day, I look over contracts and help athletes create content and negotiate with brands.

The Grove Collective has raised over $10 million and helped athletes secure deals with Delta Air Lines, the camouflage brand Realtree, and the private-jet-charter company Wheels Up.

After college, I didn't initially think I would work in NIL. I was interviewing for a job in medical sales when NIL opportunities started to come my way. Ole Miss asked me to talk to its incoming freshmen and transfers about the space and how I navigated it. From there, I created a brand called Lauren Hoselton Consulting and began speaking with student-athletes and coaches at other schools.

After I built my consulting business, the University of South Florida wanted to partner with me and I thought, "I have to turn this into something legit." With the help of an extremely successful mentor of mine, we created Total NIL. I still run this business, separate from my work at Grove.

My experience as a student-athlete has helped me do my job better. I know what it's like to be so busy that you can't work a full-time job. I also know what it's like to be injured and have a lot of things thrown your way.

I want to help student-athletes who face challenges like these. This money changes the lives of these kids. I helped one student-athlete pay for his family's health insurance. They'd never had it before. This is why I do what I do.
