The Perfect 7-day Fiji Itinerary: one Week in Fiji as a first timer

Are you planning your first-ever visit to the beautiful Fiji Islands but you’re not sure where to go? From tropical pristine beaches to friendly local encounters to thrilling experiences, here is the perfect 7-day itinerary to visit Fiji as a first-time traveller.

Nestled in the heart of the South Pacific, Fiji is a dream destination for travellers seeking paradise beaches, crystal-clear waters, and vibrant culture. With its breathtaking landscapes, friendly locals, and epic bucket list experience, Fiji offers an enchanting escape from the daily grind. But with over 300 islands in the archipelago to choose from, travelling to Fiji for the first time can be overwhelming. This itinerary covers a 7-day adventure through Fiji’s most beautiful islands, ensuring that every moment of your first trip is filled with excitement and unforgettable memories.

Getting to and around Fiji

Flying to Fiji

To get to Fiji, you will certainly have to fly from your home country. As I am living in Australia, the information below will be in Australian dollars and departing from Australia.

A few airlines operate flights from Australia to Fiji departing from different cities: Fiji Airways, Qantas, Jetstar and Virgin Australia. Many of these airlines offer deals throughout the year for round-trip to Pacific Islands. So it’s worth subscribing to their newsletter to receive them.

To find the best flight deal, I always check Skyscanner and do a search by month (if I’m flexible with dates).

Fiji Airways - 7 day itinerary fiji

How to get around in Fiji?

Made it to Nadi International Airport, it’s time for an adventure of a lifetime. But how do you want to travel around? Good news, there are a few options for you:

  • Getting around with a rental car

If you plan on staying and visiting the main island, Viti Levu, you can hire a car. However, remember the roads aren’t always in good condition so you need to be comfortable in driving. It is also best to opt for a 4wd if you plan on visiting inland or going off the main tourist roads.

If you’re comfortable driving and hiring a car for your Fiji trip, I’d recommend booking a rental car in advance with a pickup/drop-off at the airport.

  • Getting around with the local bus

I haven’t used them myself but heard good things about the local bus in Fiji. Don’t expect these to be as reliable and on time as you used to back home. You are in Fiji now meaning it’s Fiji time/ island time. No rush!

  • Getting around the islands by boat transfer

I would say this is THE main transport I experienced and the one most people will. After all, Fiji is made for island-hopping, isn’t it?

Boat transfers between islands in the Mamanucas and Yasawas are extremely good.

Best time to visit Fiji

Fiji is a year-round destination with warm temperatures and sunshine throughout the year. That being said, the most popular time to visit is during the dry season, between May to October. During this time the weather is at its best with sunny days, low humidity and minimal rain. And it is not as hot as summer.

If you are a diver/snorkeller, this period will also be the best for water visibility. And for spotting some beautiful sea creatures such as Mantas Rays.

How to choose which Fiji Islands to visit for your first trip?

You can’t really go wrong in Fiji no matter which island you choose. Each island has something to offer and you will receive a warm welcome anywhere you go.

But to make the most of your first time on this little slice of paradise, I suggest booking an Awesome Adventure Fiji hop-on/hop-off travel Pass (for flexibility) or a package (and have it all sorted for you) around the Mamanuca and Yasawa islands. This way you can have a little taste of a few islands

For my first time in Fiji, I opted for a 7-day package called “ Coconut Cruiser ” which includes coach transfers to/from Port Denarau, vessel transfers around the islands, accommodations, food (optional) and A LOT of must-do activities too. This is their most popular package and I understand why. It is filled with some incredible experiences and stays in just a week.

map coconut cruiser fiji itinerary - Fiji itinerary

I liked the idea to have it all included without being a guided group tour so I can still do my own thing without being tied up. Also, I didn’t have to worry about searching for accommodations or what time is the next boat transfers since these were all sorted for me (you only need to choose prior to the trip the type of room you’d like to stay in between a shared dorm or private room/bure)

Let’s dive into the specifics of this 7-day Fiji itinerary day by day.

7-day Fiji itinerary

This seven-day Fiji itinerary is my suggested itinerary for first-timers to spend 7 days making the most of Fiji Islands. If you’re visiting for a shorter or longer period, I’ve given you some options to add/remove to your itinerary at the bottom.

Upon arrival at Nadi International Airport, you’ll be greeted with a warm “Bula!” – the traditional Fijian greeting meaning “welcome”. Check into your hotel near Nadi or Port Denarau to settle the night before the real adventure begins!

I recommend you book your flight ticket for the day before your Awesome Adventure island trip. The departure time is early in the morning around 8.30 at Port Denarau with courtesy coach pick up from 7 am (depending on which hotel you stay)

Day 1: Port Denarau – Blue Lagoon

Let’s embark on an exhilarating island-hopping adventure, discovering the breathtaking wonders of the Mamanuca or Yasawa Islands with Awesome Adventure Fiji

After a courtesy coach transfer from your hotel to Port Denarau, you check in at Awesome Adventure office at 8 am (and receive the cutest Travel Bag including a Sarong and drinking bottle) and get ready to embark on an exceptional island-hopping adventure, discovering the breathtaking wonders of the Mamanuca or Yasawa Islands with Awesome Adventure Fiji

8h45: it’s time to jump on board one of the South Sea Cruise vessels and cruise to Blue Lagoon, the further island on your Coconut Cruiser located in the Yasawas. The journey takes around 4hrs and will be the longest on this itinerary. The catamaran is comfortable with air-conditioned lounges, outside viewing deck and fully licence bars (if you want to get your holiday started with a local Fiji Gold beer)

Beach Yasawas Islands - 7 days Fiji itinerary

Early afternoon (1 pm-ish), you notice the crystal-clear blue water and that’s when you know you arrived at Blue Lagoon Resort! The lovely staff is waiting on the beach for you to set foot on what you’ll call “home” for the next few days, singing a welcoming song. Welcoming drinks and a brief explanation of how the resort works are given before you can settle in your room and head to the restaurant for lunch.

If you haven’t pre-paid for the meal plans when booking your trip, you will have to pay directly at the resort as the meal plan is mandatory in each resort. There isn’t any other option to eat on the islands except the resort you’re staying in. So I recommend you to prepay for meals at booking – so you don’t have to think about this during the trip.

Bar blue lagoon resort - Fiji itinerary

In your package, five incredible activities are included (one per day). These are on top of the complimentary activities available in each resort. After your lunch, head to the Blue Lagoon Resort Dive shop to check the activities and sign up. Sunset Champagne Tubing, Sawa-I-Lau Cave visit, Handline Fishing trip, Night Snorkelling, Guided snorkelling are just a few you can enjoy in this resort.

I personally chose the night snorkelling for this afternoon – starting around 6 pm once it gets really dark. This allows me some time to participate in a free activity organised in the restaurant: a cooking class. The perfect way to learn more about traditional Fijian recipes.

Day 2: Blue Lagoon

The next day was the perfect day to relax and enjoy everything this untouched paradise island has to offer: hired some complimentary gear to snorkel along the vibrant coral reef teeming with incredible marine life (spotted a cute turtle), basked in the sun, join a free basket weaving workshop and ending the day watching the sun sets on the beach with a cocktail in hand.

Day 3: Blue Lagoon

Another morning in paradise. It was an early wake-up to get breakfast before heading on THE activity you should do when staying on this island: Sawa-I-Lau cave!

This cave is an iconic natural attraction around the Yasawas. This ancient limestone formation carved by constant wave action is hidden within a remote little island. They were originally formed underwater and then got pushed around sea level by tectonic movement. Now half submerged, they offer travellers to swim in a little secret pool under a huge cavern.

When you see the sight of the little island, you just feel like in a movie (maybe because the Hollywood hit movie Blue Lagoon was filmed there). The local guides share local legends about these caves, entertained everyone with some impressive jumps from the top of the cave and lead us through the underwater entrance to a second very secretive cave.

After a wonderful experience at Sawa-I-Lau cave, it was time to pack the suitcase and head to another island – or maybe not!! Sadly, the next resort planned on the itinerary had a maintenance issue that forced them to close for a few days. But the good news is it means I am staying an extra night at Blue Lagoon resort

The perk to book an inclusive package: the team at Awesome Adventure has been amazing and dealt with everything for me. They found another resort to accommodate me the night after. And the only thing I needed to do in the meantime was enjoy a cocktail on the beach.

Sunset coconut view fiji

Day 4: Blue Lagoon to Paradise Cove

Extra night in Blue Lagoon means extra morning to explore more. I embark on a scenic mountain hike to the island’s highest point for panoramic views. It didn’t disappoint. Photos speak for themselves:

Moutain view hike blue lagoon2

Around 1 pm, I hopped again on the South Sea Cruise vessel to reach the second island of this trip, in the central Yasawa Islands. It only took a couple of hours to reach Paradise Cove Resort.

Once again, this 2 nd resort didn’t disappoint. A beautiful place to stay with 2 restaurants, a bar, 2 swimming pools, a gym, Kids Club, diving shop for all the activities and a beautiful white sandy beach to relax. Everything you could hope for a perfect stay. The room, a paradise garden bungalow, was well equipped with a comfortable bed, Air Conditioner, and a splendid open aired tropical ensuite bathroom.

Open aired bathroom paradise cove resort fiji

With only one night on this island, I made the most of the afternoon by exploring the beach, and heading to the sunset viewpoint lookout before enjoying a sumptuous 7-course dinner. Then join the Kava Ceremony to try this national drink in Fiji. Made from the root of the Yaquona, it is served in a large communal bowl as part of this ceremony where we are all seated in circle around the bowl. A beautiful moment to learn more about the Fijian culture and sing along with the locals playing guitar.

Day 5: Paradise Cove to Barefoot Kuata

7 am – meeting at the dive shop to go on an adventure of a lifetime: Swimming with the manta ray.

This activity is available from May to October when the manta rays glide through the channel between Nanuya Balavu and Drawaqa Islands nearly every on the change of tide to feed. If you happen to be in Fiji at this period, this activity is one of the most amazing experiences that you will talk about for decades.

I spotted 4-5 manta rays during this activity and it was quite magical to encounter these majestic creatures. Photos don’t do justice to this awesome experience. Head to my Instagram for some incredible videos from my Mantas Rays swim.

It is now time for lunch before jumping onboard the boat to the next island mid-afternoon. I reserved at the 2 nd restaurant, DONU. This place is a fusion of local Fijian with Japanese techniques in tapas and Omakase style. You seat around the open kitchen and you can watch the chef making these fabulous dishes. It is perfect to try some local dishes such as Ika Vala Lolo and Gyodon.

Paradise Cove Donu restaurant

Despite the rain joining the party, the boat transfer went smoothly to reach Barefoot Kuata Resort at the getaway of the Yasawas. I explored the dramatic landscape of Kuata Island before ending the day at the restaurant/bar for a fun entertainment night with the staff and other travellers. I loved the relaxed atmosphere, the people and the authentic Fijian style of this resort.

Day 6:  Barefoot Kuata to South Sea Island

The last bucket list activity of the trip ticked off this morning at Barefoot Kuata: Swimming with Reef Sharks. It was another unforgettable experience included in the Coconut Cruiser.

Reef Sharks Barefoot Kuata resort Fiji itinerary

Barefoot Kuata resort surrounding and nearby waters are rich in marine biodiversity and a lot of Fiji shark species have been identified including White Tip Reef Sharks, Black Tip Reef Sharks, Tawny Nurse Sharks, Lemon Sharks, Silver Tip Sharks, Bull Sharks and Tiger Sharks.

This snorkelling activity is operated daily and a short 20-minute boat ride will take you to Moia Reef where you encounter resident Reef Sharks. This tour is guided by an experienced dive team that will look after you and introduce you to these friendly Reef Sharks.

Don’t miss at 11 am the warrior welcoming new visitors from the top of a rock! I took these photos from the island near the lookout point but you can also spot him on your Day 1 when you make your way up to Blue Lagoon Region.

Barefoot Kuata Yasawas Warrior - Fiji itinerary

The accommodation at Barefoot Kuata Resort was stunning: a traditional Bure with ocean view and open aired ensuite bathroom.

The weather wasn’t on my side on this stay but it didn’t take away the beauty of this island and its dramatic landscape. Now off we go to the last island of this island-hopping adventure

Day 7: South Sea Island – return to Port Denarau

After a late and wet arrival the night before, I’ve been welcomed by the South Sea Island team with a lovely intimate dinner with the others visitor. This island is really small and it was awesome to just be a small group (it was only 8 of us) so we could get to know each other. The weather made all of us go to bed early in the hope of a sunny day tomorrow.

And it happens! I woke up the next day to a fantastic view of the ocean from bed: perk to stay in a beachfront Bure.

Sea Island resort fiji

This tiny island is located just 30 minutes from Port Denarau, in the Mamanuca Islands, which makes it the perfect place for a day trip. Day trippers start to arrive around 9h-9h30, leaving time for the overnight resident to have it all for themselves before. This last island was perfect to end the adventure relaxing all day, basking in the sun, snorkelling in the crystal-clear water or using complimentary gear such as paddle boards, kayaks. I even hopped on the Semi-Sub marine.

South Sea Island - Fiji itinerary

As part of the day trip ticket, or your overnight stay, drinks are also complimentary and a buffet lunch is included. Every day except Sunday, you can watch Meke performances during lunchtime.

Transfer back to Port Denarau is either at 10.45 am, 4 pm or 5 pm. I recommend jumping onboard the last vessel to make the most of your day on this unique tiny island.

Other Fiji itinerary options

If you have more time (2 weeks or more).

You could spend months in Fiji without being able to see everything. But here are a few places you can check out before or after your Awesome Adventure Island Hopping tour:

  • Malolo & Malolo Lailai islands

These islands are located in the Mamanucas. A short 50-min boat transfer with South Sea Cruise will take you to Malolo Island and exclusive Malola Cat will take you to Malolo Lailai. If you are looking for a place to relax after a week full of adventures, Malolo and Malolo Lailai are the place to go. Home of some amazing resorts like the adult-only Likuliku Resort or Lomani Island Resort , Musket Cove resort or the family-friendly Plantation Resort .

For the active, these islands are also the best spots to access Fiji’s best surf breaks: Cloudbreak, Restaurant, Nomatu Left, Wilkes Passage, …

From the main island, or from Malolo Islands (boat trip from Malolo Islands is closer), you can access Cloud 9 , the first Fiji floating day club. This floating bar takes you to a whole new level of party-day drinking. With breathtaking ocean views as your backdrop, you can dive into crystal-clear waters, sunbathe on the two-level platform sundeck, have a thrill on the jumping platform or feel the beats of the live DJ, as you sip on refreshing cocktails and indulge in mouth-watering wood-fired pizzas! It’s a must-do experience if you stay on Malolo Islands!

A new floating bar is now available called Seventh Heaven but I haven’t been so can’t really give an opinion. I have heard good things about it though and you can sleep on it.

  • Malamala Beach Club

Spend the day at the Malamala Beach Club to relax on this white-sand beaches island. You can book a beachside cabana, swim in an infinity-edge pool, and enjoy stunning views while you eat!

  • Coral Coast

Back on the main island Viti Levu but not ready to go back home yet? Head to the Coral Coast, just a 1h30 drive from Nadi, a beautiful stretch of coastline renowned for its coral reefs and incredible landscapes. There are so many activities to do in the region: snorkelling, kayaking, jungle trek and river exploration are only a few examples of what you can do.

Here are some of the must-do activities in the region:

  • Zipline through a Fijian forest
  • Visit Sigatoka market
  • Sigatoka Sand Dunes
  • Sigatoka Speed boat River Safari
  • Explore on a quad tour
  • Learn to surf at Natadola Beach
  • Go waterfall chasing at the Biausevu waterfall
  • Discover the Wonderful Naihehe Caves

If you only have 3-4 days in Fiji

You can join a shorter island-hopping adventure with Awesome Adventure Fiji like the inclusive package ‘ Tropical Tempter ’ (4 days/3 nights). Or the Mini adventure package ‘ Short& Shark ’ (3 days/2nights) allows you to visit 2 islands in the Mamanucas and Yasawas islands.

Where to stay on the main island (Viti Levu) ?

BUDGET: Aquarius on the Beach , Smugglers Cove Resort or Sailors Beach Fiji are all affordable options in Nadi. Perfect for your pre-night on the main island, Vitu Levu, before heading to the Mamanucas and Yasawas.

MID-RANGE: Fiji Hideaway Resort , The Warwick and The Naviti all located on the Coral Coast are fantastic.

LUXURY: Radisson Blu Resort, Hilton Fiji Beach Resort and Sheraton Fiji Golf & Beach Resort are the three top-rated 5* luxury resorts based on Denarau Island. Fiji Marriott Resort Momi Bay , InterContinental Fiji Golf Resort & Spa and Outrigger Fiji Beach Resort are top 5* hotels located on the Coral Coast.

Final thoughts

It was a long one, but there it is your 7-day Fiji itinerary! I hope you’ll find it useful as you plan your first visit to this fantastic country. Whether you choose to relax on idyllic beaches, explore lush rainforests, or immerse yourself in Fijian traditions, this tropical paradise promises a rejuvenating and exciting experience like no other. Embrace the warmth of the Fijian people, let the slow rhythms of the islands guide you. And allow Fiji to work its magic, leaving you with memories to last a lifetime.

Eating and drinking.

Being an island in the South Pacific region, seafood plays a big part in the local cuisine. Locally grown produce mainly consists of root vegetables and tropical fruits. Coconut is a key ingredient across many dishes and Indo-Fijian influences are evident in cooking across the archipelago.

Foods to try in Fiji

Think of this as a Fijian-style ceviche. The dish uses raw fish soaked in lemon or lime juice and is served with a combination of onions, chilies, peppers and tomatoes.

2. Fijian curry

Indian influences are evident in the cuisine with a variety of curries seen all over the islands. They're typically made with coconut milk, tomatoes and a combination of local fruit and vegetables such as plantain. Curries are served with roti or dahl.

This traditional Fijian dish is made from taro leaves that are cooked or stewed in coconut milk. It's often served on the side with freshly cooked fish.

Lovo is a traditional style of cooking similar to  New Zealand ’s hangi. Meats and vegetables are wrapped in banana leaves and buried in a hole to cook for several hours over coals.

If you like seafood, you may be tempted to try the local delicacy of cawaki, or sea urchin. It's popular in coastal towns and villages but you'll also find them in city markets. They can be eaten raw or cooked.

6. Palusami

This dish comprises parcels of corned beef, onion, garlic and coconut cream wrapped and steamed in taro leaves. Other South Pacific nations like Samoa have their own take on this dish.

Culture and customs

Fijians are known for their welcoming hospitality and truly live up to this reputation. Interactions are met with a smile and curiosity is the norm, making you feel like an honored guest in the most far-reaching places of the islands.

Fiji’s population is made up of a rich cultural mix of native Fijians at around 57 percent and Indo-Fijians make up 37 percent of the population. This means the archipelago is a blend of Melanesian and Indian influences. Indigenous Fijians maintain both traditional cultural practices and strong Christian values with more than half identifying to the faith.

Approximately 34 percent of the Indian-Fijian community is Hindu and 7 percent practice Islam. One of the most noticeable cultural practices is the act of drinking kava (yanggona) which is consumed as part of ceremonies as well as being a welcoming gesture to guests in communities.

Festivals and events

Hibiscus festival.

A nine-day event held in Suva on the main island of Viti Levu each August. The Hibiscus Festival has been running for more than 50 years and is a community celebration bringing together traditional music, food stalls and the crowning of the ‘Hibiscus Queen’ (as part of the island’s beauty pageant).

Bula Festival

Much like the Hibiscus Festival, this event is held in Nadi on the western side of Viti Levu and goes on for a week. The word ‘bula’ means ‘welcome’ or ‘hello’ and is a common gesture of greeting used in most parts of Fiji. Authentic Fijian cuisine is served up as part of the event and visitors are encouraged to join the festivities.

South Indian Fire Walking Festival

This extraordinary spectacle is held between July and August. The event attracts large numbers from the local Hindu community to Suva Point. The ceremony involves Hindu priests and devotees piercing the tongue and cheeks before walking across hot coals. The event signifies the end of 10 days of abstinence to worship the goddess Maha Devi.

Lautoka Sugar Festival

Lautoka is known as the sugar capital of Fiji, situated on the west coast of Viti Levu, it’s the second biggest city (after Suva). Sugar cane holds large economic value for the country. The festival is held over a week in September and is another community celebration that brings in locals from throughout the islands to take part.

Public holidays that may impact travel include:

  • Queen's Birthday

Please note dates of  Fiji's public holidays  may vary.

Geography and environment

Fiji is an archipelago in the South Pacific scattered with around 300 islands and 540 islets. The country is approximately a five hours’ flight from the east coast of Australia. The interior of the main island is made up of thick jungle terrain, bursting with waterfalls and large winding rivers. The rich volcanic soil creates an ideal environment to grow crops of coconuts, ginger, kava, bananas, cassava and breadfruit. More than half of Fiji’s population live in major towns along the coast, either in Suva, Lautoka and Nadi on the island of Viti Levu.

Best time to visit

Thanks to its tropical climate, Fiji is a year-round destination with warm temperatures (it rarely dips below 20°C) and plenty of sunshine throughout the year. That said, the best time to visit for optimal weather – think blue skies and little rain – is during the dry season which runs from May to October. Traveling in the shoulder months is also a good option as the weather isn't too wet and there aren't as many tourists.

The monsoon season runs from November to April, and while this is considered to be the off-season, it's a great time to explore without big crowds (excluding the festive season which sees a spike in tourists). Just bear in mind that the weather is hot and humid, and torrential (but brief) downpours are common. There’s also the possibility of cyclones.

Learn more about the best time to visit Fiji

Many resorts in Fiji have onsite gift and souvenir shops, but we recommend heading to a local market to peruse the stalls and get to know the locals. They're a great place to find handmade art and crafts, traditional food and general souvenirs.

It's a good idea to check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are permitted to bring certain items into your home country. Australia and New Zealand generally have strict quarantine laws.

Here are some items you may like to buy in Fiji:

Planning a Trip to Fiji

Travel Information for Visiting These Friendly South Pacific Islands.

Spread across 18,372 square miles of the South Pacific, and consisting of 333 islands, of which 110 are inhabited, lies the Republic of the Fiji Islands.

While Fiji's landscape is not quite as jade-green as Tahiti's , its waters are equally crystal-clear, making for some of the planet's best diving amid stellar coral formations. Also unlike Tahiti, Fiji is not known for its overwater bungalows (although there are a few), but rather for thatched-roof bures (bungalows) set discreetly in the sand along miles of pristine beaches (where a few famous movies were filmed).

If a trip to Fiji is on your calendar, it's likely you'll be heading there with your significant other. Fiji's secluded private-island resorts are romantic South Pacific hideaways designed with two in mind.

And yet families will also find Fiji welcoming, as some resorts cater to parents and children. Here's what you need to know to plan your visit:

Where Is Fiji?

Fiji's islands are located in the South Pacific, about 11 hours by air from Los Angeles and four hours from Australia. They are divided into several groups.

There are two main islands: Viti Levu, the largest, is home to Nadi International Airport as well as Fiji's capital, Suva; both its southeast coast, known as the Coral Coast, and Denarau Island near Nadi, are lined with resorts.

Vanua Levu, the second largest, is located to Viti Levu's north and is home to a number of resorts catering to divers, as it's flanked by one of the world's longest barrier reefs.

The third largest island is Taveuni, known as the "Garden Island of Fiji" and covered in tropical rainforest. The fourth largest is Kadavu, which is least developed, making it ideal for hiking, bird-watching, and eco-adventure.

The rest of Fiji's islands are divided into groups.

Off the coast of Viti Levu are the Mamanucas, 20 volcanic isles surrounded by reefs and dotted with small resorts.

The Yasawas, which consist of seven main islands and numerous small islets, stretch in a northeasterly direction off of Viti Levu. Here, upscale resorts are popular with couples, budget properties with backpackers, and pristine waters with divers and yachters.

More removed are the Lomaivitis, which consist of seven main islands, one of which houses The Wakaya Club & Spa, one of Fiji's most exclusive resorts.

Fiji is a tropical destination with year-round air and water temperatures of about 80 degrees and two main seasons, summer and winter.

The ideal time to visit is during the clear, dry winter months of May to November. Yet even during the more humid summer months of December to March showers can be sporadic (typically late-afternoon and overnight) and there's usually plenty of sunshine.

How to Get There

Los Angeles International Airport (LAX) is the U.S. gateway to Fiji. The islands' official carrier, Air Pacific, offers daily non-stops to Nadi International Airport (NAN), as well as a codeshare connection to/from Vancouver, and nonstop flights three times a week from Honolulu.

Other carriers flying to Fiji include Qantas, Air New Zealand and V Australia.

How to Get Around

Since Fiji has dozens of islands with resorts, the two main modes of transport are air (via a domestic carrier or private seaplane or helicopter) and sea (via scheduled ferries or private boats). On the main island of Viti Levu, taxis and buses provide land links between Nadi International Airport and the resorts on Denarau Island and along the Coral Coast.

Fiji's domestic air services include Pacific Sun (Air Pacific's regional carrier) and Pacific Islands Seaplanes, and Island Hoppers Helicopters.

Regularly scheduled service is available to both the Mamanucas and Yasawas on ferries or fast catamarans, and some resorts offer private boat transfers.

When booking your resort stay, check its website for details on air and sea transfers.

Is Fiji Expensive?

Yes and no. The larger resorts on Viti Levu, such as the Sofitel Fiji Resort & Spa or the Shangri-La's Fijian Resort & Spa, offer affordable nightly rates (starting at about $169 per night), but guests may find food to be pricey. Almost everything except seafood, some vegetables, and tropical fruit has to be shipped in.

Many private-island resort rates (which can range from $400 to $1,000 per night) may seem quite high at first glance, but that's because they are all-inclusive, meaning all meals and some beverages are included in the nightly rate.

In general, the most secluded resorts tend to be the costliest. Adding to the expense is the seaplane or helicopter transfer required to get there, which can be up to $400 per person one-way. The most affordable are budget properties that cater to backpackers and some divers.

For a complete listing of Fiji's resort options, see Fiji Tourism's accommodations guide.

Do I Need a Visa?

No, citizens of the U.S. and Canada (and dozens of other countries) need only a passport valid for at least six months after their visit and a ticket for return or onward travel. Entry visas are granted upon arrival for stays of four months or less.

Is English Spoken?

Yes. English is Fiji's official language and most people speak it, but Fijian is revered and learning a few key words and phrases is considered polite.

Do They Use U.S. dollars?

No. Fiji's currency is the Fijian dollar abbreviated as FJD. One US dollar converts to a little over 2 Fijian dollars. You can exchange money at your resort, or Nadi International Airport and most banks in major cities have ATM machines.

What Is the Electric Voltage?

It is 220-240 volts, so bring an adapter set and a converter; the outlets are three-pronged with two angled bottom prongs (as are used in Australia).

What Is the Time Zone?

Fiji lies on the other side of the International Date Line, so it is 16 hours ahead of New York and 19 hours ahead of Los Angeles. You will lose almost an entire day flying to Fiji from Los Angeles but regain it on the return trip.

Do I Need Shots?

None are required, but making sure your routine vaccinations, such as diphtheria/pertussis/tetanus and polio, are up to date is a good idea. Hepatitis A and B vaccinations are also recommended, as is typhoid. Also, bring bug repellent, as Fiji has its share of mosquitoes and other insects.

Can I Cruise the Fijian Islands?

Yes. Two small cruise operators, Blue Lagoon Cruises, and Captain Cook Cruises sail between the islands and numerous operators offer yacht charters.

Fiji Islands

Best known for their stunning landscapes, including white sand beaches, crystal-clear waters, and vibrant coral reefs, the Fiji islands are one of the most impressive destinations for the dreamy South Pacific island getaway you’ve been dreaming of. These natural wonders make Fiji a popular destination for eco-tourism, as well as for outdoor activities such as snorkeling, diving, and unending water sports.

Located in the southwestern Pacific Ocean, the island nation of Fiji Islands is in a remote part of the ocean near island nations like the Solomon Islands , Vanuatu, and the Cook Islands.

Fiji has two major islands, Viti Levu and Vanua Levu, which combined account for more than three-quarters of the country’s land area. However, Fiji consists of over 330 islands in total, although only about a third of these are inhabited.

In addition to its major population centers, Fiji is home to several smaller islands and major island groups, including the following:

  • Taveuni Island
  • Kadavu Island
  • The Mamanuca Islands
  • The Yasawa Islands
  • The Lomaiviti Islands
  • The Lau Islands

For the most part, tourism in Fiji is concentrated on the country’s largest islands, as well as nearby island groups like the Mamanuca Islands , the Yasawa Islands, and, to a lesser extent, the Lomaiviti Islands. Fiji’s more remote islands and island groups are both harder to access and currently lack much of the infrastructure needed to sustain more robust tourism.

Visitors from most countries, including the United States and Australia, can enter Fiji for up to four months without a visa. Frequent flights into the Nadi International Airport make the country extremely accessible for travelers; in fact, Fiji is less than ten hours from the west coast of the United States.

Where To Stay in Fiji

You really can’t go wrong with choosing to stay in any of Fiji’s islands; every corner of the country seems to have its own unique beauty, stunning oceanfront, and rich culture to experience firsthand. However, there are a few larger Fiji islands and stand-out island groups in Fiji that are particularly attractive to travelers.

Well-loved for their plentiful accommodation options, ease of transport, and stunning natural beauty, island groups like the Mamanuca Islands and Yasawa Islands in the west of the country, and the major islands of Viti Levu and Vanua Levu, are the most popular Fiji islands to choose from for your stay.

yasawa islands fiji

Yasawa Islands

The Yasawa Islands are a chain of 20 volcanic islands in Fiji. They are located to the northwest of the main island of Viti Levu and are known for their stunning scenery, clear waters, and pristine beaches. Just northeast of the Mamanuca Islands, they’re another one of the most popular island groups for travelers to Fiji.

The Yasawa Islands are popular with tourists for activities such as snorkeling, diving, and exploring the local villages, though they’re perhaps best known for their snorkeling and diving. Surrounded by the warm waters of the Coral Sea, these islands have ideal conditions for the growth of coral reefs and other forms of marine life. Clear waters allow for excellent visibility, making it possible for snorkelers to see a variety of colorful fish, coral, and other underwater creatures.

While hotels and resorts often offer their own small group and private snorkeling and diving excursions, you can also find excursions from Nadi, the Mamanuca Islands, or other destinations across Fiji.

With frequent ferry access to the Yasawa Islands from Nadi on Viti Levu, as well as plenty of options for private transport, it’s quite easy to access the Yasawa Islands – even affordable. Another popular option for travelers is booking an overnight excursion from the mainland or a multi-day cruise around the Yasawa Islands for a more active vacation.

Where To Stay in the Yasawa Islands

In the Yasawa Islands, you’ll find plenty of popular resorts and hotels to choose from, and at various price points, making them a popular destination for everyone from backpackers to luxury travelers looking for private island stays.

These are some of the best hotels and resorts in the Yasawa Islands:

  • Barefoot Kuata Island ($)
  • Navutu Stars Resort ($$)
  • Turtle Island ($$$)

Turtle Island is also known as the longest-running  ecotourism operation  in the South Pacific, raising the bar with its forward-thinking sustainability and conservation projects. From the resort’s founding,  over 250 native species of flora and fauna have been reintroduced on the island, and hundreds of thousands of trees have been planted, turning back the clock and restoring environments to paradise.

Vanua Levu is the second largest island in Fiji and is known for its rugged landscapes, lush forests, and remote beaches. Unlike the more developed and tourist-oriented island of Viti Levu, Vanua Levu offers a more authentic and off-the-beaten-path experience, making it an ideal destination for those seeking adventure and cultural immersion.

Despite being one of the larger population centers in Fiji, Vanua Levu is less developed than the main island of Viti Levu, offering a more authentic and serene experience than you’ll find there. It’s a perfect cross between the more remote island groups in Fiji and Viti Levu.

While you’ll find great places to stay all around the island, one of the most popular areas for travelers is Savusavu. Located in a bay surrounded by lush hills and tropical forests, it’s a stunning place to explore or to call home for your Fiji islands vacation. The area is also known for its clear waters, making it a popular spot for swimming, snorkeling, and diving. Savusavu is home to several thermal springs, which are popular with locals and visitors alike.

kava ceremony in Fiji

PARTAKE IN A KAVA CEREMONY

The national drink of Fiji is called Kava. It is derived from the roots of the kava plant, steeped in water, and then filtered. It possesses sedative properties, so be sure not to overdo it the first couple of times.

GO SCUBA DIVING

Fiji is famously known as the ‘soft coral capital of the world’. This means you can expect some spectacular dive sites across the country. You can also dive with sharks, sans cage, near Beqa Island off Viti Levu.

LAVENA COASTAL TRAIL

Located on Taveuni, the Lavena Coastal Trail is one of the best adventures you can have in Fiji. The trail takes you along the coast to remote beaches, through the rainforest, and ends at a double waterfall.

MORE THINGS TO TRY IN FIJI

There is no shortage of great  things to do in Fiji  during your visit and the biggest problem you’ll face is fitting them all into your itinerary.

Each island has its own offering and unique things to check out during a visit, so be sure to look at our island guides once you decide where you’re itinerary will take you.

BOUMA WATERFALLS IN TAVEUNI:   One of the top reasons to make the beaten path deviation to Taveuni is to visit the Bouma Waterfalls. Set in a lush forest, you can spend an entire day swimming in natural pools and hiking to the 3 waterfalls here.

STAND ON THE INTERNATIONAL DATELINE:  Fiji is one of only 3 places where you can physically stand on the International Dateline. You can do this on Vanua Levu and Taveuni, although Taveuni is the place where you’ll be able to get a photo with the famed sign.

ATTEND A FIRE DANCING CEREMONY:  Fire dancing is a long tradition in the Yasawa Islands of Fiji and one of the most fascinating cultural performances you can witness during your visit.

WHITE WATER RAFTING ON THE UPPER NAVUA RIVER:  Yes, you can go white water rafting in Fiji. In fact, this unique stretch of water provides some epic views to go with its class II/III rapids. Booking a day of rafting here will also have you checking one of the  Top 100 Travel Adventures  in the world off your bucket list.

SHARK DIVING OFF BEQA ISLAND:  Fiji is famous for its offering of non-caged shark diving with some of the most notorious predators of the sea. It requires an advanced open water certification and the ability to follow directions, but if you’re willing and able, you can have the chance to dive in waters where Tiger and Bull sharks prowl.

VISIT THE SAWA I LAU CAVES:  Located on Yasawa Island, the largest and most remote island in the Yasawas group, is a massive island cave that is fed by the sea. Crawling in from above, it is a cool place to snorkel and explore the cavern ecosystems.

RELAX AT THE BLUE LAGOON:  This is probably the most beautiful beach we have ever seen in our travels. Famed for being used as the filming location for the movie  Blue Lagoon , it is the perfect place to spend an afternoon beach walking, swimming and snorkeling.

JOIN A VILLAGE VISIT:  Fijian hospitality is warm, welcoming and to visit Fiji without visiting a village would be a missed opportunity to connect with another culture. Learn how to cook local dishes, hear stories, listen to music and shop handmade artisan goods.

TAKE A SCENIC FLIGHT:  As with most tropical places, some of the best views will come from above. This is no exception in Fiji. Get a taste for all the blues, greens and earth tones from the sky by booking a scenic flight. Hot tip, if this isn’t in your budget, be sure to book a window seat on any inter-island flights you take!

SNORKEL WITH MANTA RAYS:  Rich with coral gardens, walls, and nutrient-rich seas, it is not uncommon to spot Manta Rays while diving and snorkeling in the Mamanuca and Yasawa Islands. However, some islands offer snorkel trips to Manata cleaning stations, where you can observe large numbers of these awesome creatures in shallow water.

FOODIE BUCKET LIST

The Fiji islands are surrounded by the rich oceans of the Pacific, and with so much coastline, the country is of course known for its seafood.

You’ll find plenty of  fresh seafood  for sale, especially in the hotels and resorts, and it’s often grilled or served in a  coconut cream sauce .

Rice and cassava  are ubiquitous in Fiji and are often served as an accompaniment to the fish or meat, along with other more seasonal vegetables.

Fiji has a huge population of Indian descent so that means you can always find a  great curry  if you’re hungry. In the towns and cities, there are curry houses everywhere, serving staples such as Daal, Naan and Tikka.

When you travel to Fiji, you can also try to find a  Lovo ,  a traditional Fijian banquet ceremony where you gorge on food that’s been prepared using an underground oven.

You can also try the local  Kava , homebrewed alcohol that’s imbibed after much ceremony.

FIJIAN FESTIVALS

Fiji is a very cultural place, and you can find traditional ceremonies and events throughout most of the year.

In towns with large Indian populations, such as Nadi, you can visit local temples and will often run into colorful parades in the streets.

Diwali and Holi  are both celebrated passionately in Fiji.

If you’re looking for indigenous celebrations though, then the best festival is the  Bula Festival , a week-long event that involves dancing, singing, eating and drinking across the whole island.

If you are traveling in the Yasawa Islands, be sure to catch a fire tossing ceremony. During these performances, trained local dancers perform indigenous storytelling through dance and with live flames.

Additionally, on Viti Levu, seek out a similar yet different Fire Walking ceremony. This is when hot stones are placed in patterns, depending on the story, and then navigated barefoot.

PLAN THE PERFECT ISLAND HOPPING ITINERARY!

Popular regions in the fiji islands.

When you travel to Fiji, the first island you’ll be visiting is Viti Levu. This is the largest of the Fiji islands, it’s the transport hub and where you can find the capital, Suva. Travelers will start in Nadi , where the country’s international airport is, and from here you can explore nearby national parks, botanic gardens, colorful markets, and beautiful coastline. Head to Denarau Island off the coast of Nadi for high-end resorts and hotels, or make the journey overland to Suva where you can find museums in the off-the-beaten-track capital city.

Head north of Viti Levu and you can explore Fiji’s second-largest island, Vanua Levu. Compared to Fiji travel destinations such as Nadi and the Mamanucas, Vanua Levu sees just a fraction of the tourist numbers, making this the perfect place to escape the crowds, especially in peak season. Vanua Levu is known for its rugged, tropical beauty and pristine nature. Start your Fiji islands adventure in Savusavu, a laid-back harbor town where you can get a little culture. Next, head into the jungle, before rounding off your trip by diving in the Namena Marine Park, one of the Pacific Ocean’s most biodiverse areas.

YASAWA ISLANDS

North of the Mamanuca Islands, you can find the equally beautiful yet much less developed  Yasawa Islands . This is the place to go if the Mamanucas are too busy for your liking because on the Yasawas you can find rustic homestays and guest houses overlooking the pristine coastline, and backed by verdant undisturbed jungle. There’s much to discover in the Yasawa Islands, from wonderful coral reefs, deep blue lagoons, and hidden underwater caves, to traditional Kava ceremonies and cultural encounters.

MAMANUCA ISLANDS

The  Mamanuca Islands  are just a quick boat ride away from Nadi, off the west coast of Nadi, and this small collection of Fiji islands makes up the center of tourism in the country. No Fiji travel itinerary is complete without a few days here, as the Mamanuca Islands are the epitome of a  tropical destination . Hang out at resorts, party on Beachcomber Island, and discover the sheer natural beauty of these Pacific Islands. The snorkeling is great, the diving is even better, or you can just sit around on the beach and do nothing at all.

You’ll also want to add  Taveuni  to your Fiji travel adventure because this is another area of outstanding natural beauty. Taveuni is the third largest of the Fiji islands and it’s home to crashing waterfalls and stunning coral reefs. Tackle the Lavena Coastal Walk to enjoy the best of the rugged coastline and glorious beaches, before hiking into the jungle in search of the Tavoro Waterfall. Taveuni also offers access to some of the best diving in Fiji on the Somosomo Strait.

FIJI TRAVEL BUDGET

Setting a budget for traveling around the Fiji Islands is highly dependent on your travel style. It is possible to visit just about anywhere in Fiji on any budget and still have a great trip. That said, you can make your trip as basic or as luxury as you desire.

To help you set your budget, we’ve included some base range price estimations for travel around Fiji. Of course, keep in mind that prices can fluctuate based on seasons, availability and festivals.

ACCOMMODATION:  When you travel to Fiji, the accommodation can be as expensive or as cheap as you want it to be. You can spend  hundreds of dollars a night on the honeymoon suite  of a private resort on a deserted island, or you can spend  20 dollars a night for a dorm bed  by the beach. Accommodation prices are always much higher in peak season.

FOOD:  Meals can be good value, although always remember that costs inevitably are much higher on smaller islands and in resorts than in towns like Nadi.  For a few dollars , you can pick up a big portion of curry in a local restaurant, while equally, you could spend a  hundred dollars  for a three-course meal in a resort overlooking the ocean.

TRANSPORT:  Your transport options in the Fiji islands are generally good value.  Local buses  and boats have minimal costs, while you can save money on the touristy catamarans by buying a  hop on hop off passes . Sea Plane transfers, while expensive, are still comparatively good value compared to other destinations in the world.

ACTIVITIES:  Nature costs nothing to see, just your transport, while more expensive activities such as  diving or sailing  are the things that will start to set you back. You can usually get two dives for around 100 USD, for instance.

50 USD PER DAY

Staying in dorm beds, buying cheap local food, and using the hop on hop off, island hopping passes. No diving.

150 USD PER DAY

Staying in private rooms or guesthouses, having the odd restaurant meal, and enjoying a few day trips or dives.

300 USD + PER DAY

If you’re looking for luxury, Fiji can provide it. Private resorts, Sea Plane transfers and endless restaurant meals and activities.

WHERE TO STAY IN FIJI

Below you will find some of the places we have stayed during our travels in Fiji. These are individual properties that we enjoyed and would recommend to other travelers.

HOW TO GET AROUND IN FIJI

When you’re planning your Fiji travel itinerary, you’ll need to factor in how to actually get around. Fiji is an archipelago, so at some point, you’re going to have to take a boat.

If you’re not short on cash then the quickest and most exciting way to travel around the Fiji islands is to take a Sea Plane or a helicopter.

If you’re budgeting though, this won’t be an option. Instead, you can make use of public transport and local tour companies.

In the touristy areas, predominantly Nadi and the Mamanuca and Yasawa Islands, you easily arrange boat transfers and transport with hotels, resorts and local tour providers.

From Nadi, you can take catamarans across to the Mamanuca and Yasawa Islands, and you can even purchase great value hop on hop off passes for island hopping.

To get to the more remote islands, such as Vanua Levu and Taveuni, you’ll need to take the slow, public ferries. Across these islands, you can make use of public buses to get around cheaply, as you can on Viti Levu too.

FLIGHTS:  Fiji Airways is the domestic carrier and they are responsible for connecting the islands with regular schedules. It is also possible to take private seaplanes or charter flights throughout the whole country, depending on your budget.

BUS:  The islands in Fiji that are inhabited will have some sort of bus system in place for transport on that particular island. That said, don’t expect anything fancy. These are local, well-worn, rickety buses with no air conditioning. Fares are cheap and they will get you to where you need to go, though. You also won’t find traditional bus stops, instead, to catch the bus you just need to stand on the road along the route and flag one down.

FERRIES:  If flying between islands is out of the questions, don’t worry, ferries are common places in Fiji. Schedules, however, may make traveling solely by ferry a real challenge unless you have unlimited time during your visit. Ferries range from large, comfy boats to small runner types. Be sure to check with the locals about up to date schedules, as they change often.

CRUISING:  It is possible to see some of the Fiji Islands on a cruise. This can be done on both small and large ships. It is also possible to take the catamaran-type multi-day cruises around the Mamanuca and Yasawa Islands. The best cruises in the Fiji Islands, however, are operated by  Captain Cook Cruises  out of Denarau.

WHEN TO VISIT FIJI

Fiji has two distinct seasons, a wet and a dry season, and due to its tropical location in the southern Pacific, it enjoys warm and generally consistent temperatures throughout the year.

The  most popular time  to travel to Fiji  is between June and September  and over the Christmas and New Year holidays. These dates coincide with holidays in  Australia  and New Zealand, where most tourists to the Fiji islands originate from.

The  dry season , between April and October, sees the best weather but it’s also when Fiji is at its busiest. The scuba diving is great, and there’s no chance of rain or cyclones, but prices are definitely going to be at their peak, as are the crowds.

The  rainy season  runs from November through to March, but it can still be a good time to visit, just keep an eye on the weather and look out for cyclone warnings (which are rare). It’s much more humid, and visibility in the water won’t be as good, but the waterfalls and jungles will be at their finest after downpours while prices are much lower when you travel to Fiji in the wet season.

ESCAPE TO PARADISE AS NEWLYWEDS!

Safety in fiji.

The Fiji islands are very safe for tourists, and if you’re staying in the resorts and on the touristy destinations, then you’ll really have very little to worry about when it comes to your personal safety.

Fiji is a poor country, however, so always keep an eye out for your belongings, especially when you’re on the beach. Incidents and thefts are very rare, however.

You need to be more careful in certain areas of the cities, such as Suva and Nadi, where it can be more dangerous late at night.

In the markets, watch out for pickpockets, but also be prepared to haggle with locals when you’re buying souvenirs or booking onto tours, as you could be scammed. Generally, though, Fijians are welcoming and hospitable.

As with any destination, we recommend learning and adhering to certain safety practices when you travel. Be sure to read our personal  travel safety tips , compiled from our travels across 7 continents.

Lying just south of the equator, Fiji’s climate is mostly tropical, with two distinct seasons – a rainy season from December to April, and a dry season from June to October. Being near the equator, Fiji’s temperature is also typically warm all year round, ranging from 23 – 35 degrees and making it suitable to visit at any time.

Peak tourism season is usually between June to October when the weather is still warm but the rain is staying away, so if you want to avoid peak tourism time and still enjoy your trip, we recommend visiting between November to April.

Capital Cities

Made up of over 300 islands spread throughout the South Pacific, Fiji has one capital city – Suva – located on the southern end of the largest island, Viti Levu. Home to roughly 75,000 people, Suva is the commercial and political centre of the country and a large portion of the South Pacific, hosting the majority of international meetings, diplomatic meetings and home to the country’s largest harbour.

Commonly visited by business travellers, Suva is the best city to visit if you’re looking to travel to Fiji on business purposes or want to stay for a long period of time. If you’re planning a shorter visit for pleasure, the top tourist city of Nadi is the best destination to visit.

LOCAL KNOWLEDGE

A vibrant island full of bright colours, crystal clear waters and friendly faces, Fiji is the dream destination if you’re looking to get away from the hustle and bustle, slow down and embrace sunny island life for a while. While you’re sure to be immerse in island culture no matter where you go, there are a few local tips and tricks that will make your stay that little bit more special:

  • Stay in Smaller Resorts for the true Fijian Experience – Generally speaking, the larger the resort the less ‘authentically Fijian’ your trip may feel. If you want to dive headfirst into Fijian culture, trade the larger, more popular resorts for smaller accommodation options. Your Pulse Travel Agent can assist with finding the perfect accommodation for you.
  • Pack Bright Colours – Fiji is a naturally bright and colourful place, and Fijians often dress in island patterns or tropical prints, so embrace the island dress code and swap your plain shirts and shorts for bright and colourful outfits while on the island. Island culture is also generally pretty casual, so you can skip the heels and loafers and just bring a nice pair of runners or sandals with you as footwear.
  • Embrace ‘Bula’ Spirit – Fijians are famous for their hospitality and friendly nature, and you’ll likely hear people shout ‘Bula!’ at you wherever you go while visiting. It’s customary to greet anyone you’re meeting with a friendly ‘Bula’ – you’ll also want to say ‘vinaka’ as thanks.
  • Pack (or purchase) Bottled Water – The water in Fiji isn’t the same quality as many other nations worldwide, and while it may be safe to drink out of the tap in the larger cities and hotels, we suggest bringing some bottled water with you when out and about to be on the safe side.
  • Try Kava – Fiji is famous for its Kava, a drink made from the crushed roots of the plant Piper methysticum, and it’s highly recommended to try Kava at least once while visiting Fiji. Fijians will often drink Kava in groups with other members of their village, and there are a few common rules of etiquette to follow when involved in a Kava drinking ceremony, but don’t be afraid to ask if you’re unsure, as Fijians love to share!

Fiji is a tropical destination, and great to visit all year round, However, the country experiences a very distinct wet and dry season, with most tourists visiting during the dry season in May to October. if you want to make the most of blue skies, low humidity and beautiful weather, we recommend visiting during this time, but if you want to get slightly cheaper rates and don’t mind some bad weather, visit over the Christmas period.
