Igloo maxcold voyager backpack cooler overview, things to consider before buying an igloo backpack cooler, why you should trust me, igloo backpack cooler review, what do other reviewers say, igloo maxcold voyager alternatives, my thoughts overall on the igloo voyager backpack cooler.

In the market for a backpack cooler that doesn’t cost a small fortune? How hard can it be, right? Turns out…not so easy.

In this Igloo backpack cooler review, I’m comparing the MaxCold Voyager against some of the best backpack coolers you can get so you can decide whether Igloo is the right choice for you.

Igloo MaxCold Voyager Backpack

Igloo MaxCold Voyager Backpack

Value for money icon

  • Multiple compartments make it easy to load up a picnic and your essentials like a wallet, phone, and keys
  • Of the sub-$100 coolers I tested, Igloo had the best insulation
  • There are a lot of cool features built into this bag, from elastic mesh side panels, a bottle opener, t-handles on the zippers, and an elastic bungee cord on the front
  • The multiple pocket system is great for a picnic for two and separating drinks from foods, etc. But it reduces the capacity if you’re just looking to bring drinks
  • It doesn’t look cool in my opinion

What’s better than throwing some drinks and snacks on your back and heading out into nature?

Sometimes that’s all you need to clear your mind.

And I’m the kind of person who also gets peace of mind knowing I’m carrying the best gear.

So I went out and picked up five of the most popular backpack coolers and tested them all against one another.

In this review, I’m not only looking at the Igloo MaxCold Voyager backpack cooler , but also the YETI Hopper M20 , the RTIC 20-Can , the Icemule Pro , and the Tourit Cockatoo .

There are pros, cons, and best-use cases for each. Keep reading to see my results.

Igloo backpack cooler front view

The Igloo MaxCold Voyager backpack cooler is similar to the Igloo Gizmo—the brand’s most popular backpack cooler. But the MaxCold Voyager is a step up in insulation and features.

Because it’s not much more expensive than the Gizmo, I figured I’d give it a try.

igloo maxcold voyager 30 can backpack cooler reviews

We compare YETI, RTIC, Igloo, ORCA, and Pelican to see which of their 20 qt coolers is the best. The results of our insulation tests might shock you.

It can hold 30 cans, though that’s only with an ice-pack, and when I tried that, none of the drinks really got all that cold. So I would actually consider this to be more of a 20-can max if you plan on adding ice to actually get your contents cold.

Igloo has a few more premium backpack coolers available, but I wanted to add a few sub-$100 coolers to my tests to see if there was a great budget option.

Igloo MaxCold Voyager Backpack

The Igloo MaxCold Voyager offers solid value for money, and if you need a cooler backpack for an upcoming trip, it's not a bad choice. I don't see this lasting more than 5 years though, and I personally would rather get something that I know will last a decade or longer.

Igloo backpack cooler on kayak in lake

Of the backpack coolers I tested that cost less than $100, the Igloo MaxCold Voyager was the best. So if you’re not looking to spend over $100, well, you know my recommendation.

But I think the best value for money pick you can make is the Icemule Pro XL 33L . It’s water-tight, has excellent insulation, looks awesome, and has a rugged rubberized ripstop exterior.

Icemule Pro XL 33L

The Icemule Pro XL is my top pick for backpack coolers. I love the way it looks, the insulation is fantastic, and the price is right. It can hold its own against YETI despite being less than half the price.

The Icemule costs almost double what the Igloo Voyager does, but if you plan on using your backpack cooler on any nature excursions, or want something that’ll last more than 5 years, then the Icemule is a better investment.

Another important consideration is that the Igloo MaxCold Voyager had the most pockets of any backpack cooler I tested, which is fantastic if you have kids and need lots of sub-compartments to store their various knick-knacks.

Yeti Hopper M20 compared to rtic backpack and Icemule pro

Before writing this review, I tested five of the most popular backpack coolers on the market: the Igloo MaxCold Voyager , the YETI Hopper M20 , the RTIC 20-Can , the Icemule Pro XL 33L , and the Tourit Cockatoo .

RTIC Backpack Cooler Review

In this RTIC Backpack Cooler review, I compare the 20-Can Backpack to other coolers from YETI, Igloo, Icemule, and Tourit to see which one is the right for you.

For each cooler, I put 3.5 lbs of ice, sealed them, and measured the internal temperature for 40 hours.

I also had the chance to do some sort of excursion with each cooler to see what it was actually like to bring the cooler around for a day and get to know its comparative strengths and weaknesses.

how-long-does-dry-ice-last-in-a-cooler-image

Don’t risk ruining the weekend by not keeping everything cold. We’ll show you exactly how long your dry ice is going to last, plus how to boost dry ice life.

So I not only know how the Igloo MaxCold Voyager performs, but I also know how it performs in comparison to other brands.

Igloo backpack cooler portability demonstration on kayak

The Igloo MaxCold Voyager is well below $100, which is one of the main reasons I wanted to give it a try: to see if it’s a good budget-friendly option.

The only other cooler I tested near this price range was the Tourit Cockatoo , and while the Tourit is about 25% less expensive than the Igloo, you’re getting a far better value with the Igloo.

Tourit Cockatoo Cooler Backpack

The Tourit Cockatoo isn't great with insulation. It's better to think of it as a backpack with insulation rather than a cooler. If you need a lot of compartments and only need to keep a chill for six hours or so, the Tourit Cockatoo is great. But for all-day frostiness, you'll want something more robust.

I think the real question is whether you should get the extreme budget-friendly Igloo backpack cooler, or step up the investment to an Icemule Pro, which is my top value-for-money pick.

Of course, there’s the YETI Hopper M20 , but at over $300, it’s not really in the “budget-friendly” category at all. It is a great cooler, though.

YETI Hopper M20 Backpack Cooler

The Hopper M20 Backpack Soft Cooler allows you to put the day on your back — literally. This hands-free soft cooler keeps you mobile, while an ultra-strong magnet strip keeps the cold locked in and the hot air out.

I think the Igloo MaxCold Voyager is a solid value, but I’m a very active person who likes to go kayaking, hiking, and fishing, and I’m not particularly easy on my gear when I do any of that.

So when I came down to adventure-time, I felt the soft fabric shell of the Igloo and the construction just wasn’t what I needed. I’m the kind of person who is willing to pay a little extra for something I know will last a long time.

While I feel that the Igloo is a good backpack cooler, I’m not 100% confident it’s going to endure through the impact-heavy things I get into regularly.

igloo maxcold voyager 30 can backpack cooler reviews

Looking for a cooler that doesn’t cost a small fortune? We got you. This Igloo BMX 25 review tells you all you need to know before buying.

Igloo voyager backpack cooler main pocket capacity

When looking at the capacity, I like to not only measure how much a cooler can hold, but also how “efficient” the cooler is with that space. Some designs can hold several more cans than others, despite the coolers being the same size externally.

So I measure what I call the “space efficiency ratio,” which is just the liter capacity divided by the number of cans the cooler can hold with ice.

backpack cooler space efficiency compared

The Igloo MaxCold Voyager ’s space efficiency ratio rating is 1.5, which is the highest of the five backpack coolers I tested.

That basically means that compared with the external size of the cooler, the Igloo can hold the most cans. A big part of this is that the Igloo has a front pouch with a lot of room in it. You wouldn’t necessarily always use that for storing more cans—you’d probably put your food or some dry goods in that compartment

Icemule ’s space efficiency ratio rating is 0.72, which is below the average of the five coolers I tested. This is because there’s a lot of extra fabric at the top that you need to make the roll top closure work.

The Igloo MaxCold Voyager’s size is ideal for a full picnic for two, and you could probably pack a light picnic for four in there.

Here are the actual capacities for all the coolers tested:

Backpack cooler actual capacity in liters

The Icemule has the most liquid capacity, with the YETI coming in second. If you’re looking to haul a picnic for six, I would recommend one of those two backpack coolers as those are the only ones that have that kind of capacity.

The Igloo came in fourth (out of five) in my insulation tests. Check out the graph below:

Backpack Cooler Ice Retention and Insulating Ability Graph 1

I ran my test for 40 hours, at which point all the coolers had been sitting at room temperature (except the YETI).

The Igloo held its contents below 40 degrees (the food-safe temperature limit) for 19 hours.

How long does the Igloo backpack cooler hold ice for?

My Igloo MaxCold Voyager held ice for 16 hours.

question icon

And if it’s frosty beers you’re after, the Igloo kept cans at or below 50 degrees for 25 hours, compared to the YETI’s 33-hour performance.

The YETI Hopper M20 was the king of insulation in my tests, but you can see that the Icemule wasn’t far behind at all, which really surprised me.

The Igloo and the Tourit were definitely the laggards in this area, but they’re also the only options under $100. Still, the Igloo outperformed the Tourit, despite the fact that the Tourit is smaller (smaller capacity usually means better ice retention when using an equal amount of ice).

Want to keep ice cream frozen in a cooler only using things you have already? This guide has all the DIY tips and tricks to keep that ice cream frozen.

Igloo voyager backpack cooler on a kayak in lake

Durability is the biggest factor weighing on why I recommend the Icemule over the Igloo .

It’s not that the Igloo isn’t durable—there’s nothing happening to it yet that suggests it’s not well-made.

But when I look at the triple layer rubberized ripstop fabric of the Icemule, plus the stitching in the seams, it’s clear that it’s much better built than the Igloo Voyager.

I should also say that the Igloo Voyager is much better built than the Tourit Cockatoo, so if you’re firm on sticking below $100 for your backpack cooler, then get the Igloo for sure.

How to Lock Your Cooler

Nothing ruins a trip faster than losing your important cargo. In this guide, you’ll learn how to lock your cooler, plus you can find our favorite cooler locks.

I think the Igloo will last long enough for you to get a good deal for your money. But there’s nothing that blows me away about the materials and construction.

If you’re willing to venture above $100, then the quality is disproportionately better. That means while the Icemule is about double the cost of the Igloo, I think you’re getting much more than double the value in terms of durability, comfort, storage space, and adventure-readiness.

Portability

Igloo backpack cooler straps for portability

It doesn’t get much more portable than a backpack cooler, and all the options I tested were great—especially when compared to hard coolers.

The Igloo backpack cooler is pretty comfortable when fully loaded—there’s a nice pad for the lower back that can help out if you have some strange oblong objects poking out backwards.

The most comfortable backpack cooler is the YETI Hopper M20 , which I felt balanced the weight on your back exceptionally well. The RTIC 20-Can pack and the Tourit Cockatoo didn’t impress me much with their comfort or ease of carrying longer distances.

I’d say the Igloo was somewhere in the middle for comfort.

Igloo backpack cooler side pocket features

Igloo loaded the MaxCold Voyager with features: it has two mesh pockets at the sides for storing water bottles or whatever else you want. It also has a front pocket, a main compartment, and a top compartment for easy access to your keys, wallet, and phone.

There’s a nifty metal bottle opener attached to one strap, and there’s some nylon loops on the other strap if you want to attach a carabiner.

Overall, I think Igloo does the best job—even when compared with the expensive YETI Hopper—with thinking of small ways to make the backpack more useful on a camping trip or a hike.

Some reviewers were dismayed that this backpack doesn’t carry a full 30 cans with ice—just 30 cans without ice. Who wants that?

I think a better expectation is 20 cans with ice, plus places to store your phone, keys, and wallet. In that regard, the Igloo has the most pockets of any cooler I tested, so it has the most versatile storage space. The higher end coolers usually just have one main compartment—the Igloo is much more of an insulated backpack, rather than a cooler you can put on your back.

YETI Hopper M20

Yeti Hopper M20 backpack cooler on fishing trip

The YETI Hopper M20 is my top pick of all the backpack coolers because it keeps the weight distributed evenly across your back and makes treacherous hiking conditions a little safer.

I tend to get into treacherous hiking conditions often so that’s pretty important to me.

I also like that the YETI has a high density shell that’s stiffer and more abrasion resistant than the rubberized RTIC and Icemule . I think that’ll contribute to the longevity of the cooler. But it does cost over $300, which is a lot for a backpack cooler.

Still, if you’re looking for the best of the best, the YETI Hopper M20 is the best upgrade backpack cooler you can get in my opinion.

YETI Hopper M20 Review

In this YETI Hopper M20 review, I’ve tested YETI’s backpack cooler against several of the best competitors to find out if it’s really worth the price?

Icemule Pro XL 33L Backpack Cooler

model wearing Icemule pro on back

The Icemule Pro is still a big step up in cost from the Igloo , but I think it’s worthy of consideration.

I can see the Icemule Pro lasting for the rest of your life, and I just don’t see the Igloo backpack cooler doing the same. Igloo uses a standard fabric and the internal waterproof lining is pretty thin.

While the Icemule Pro is about double the cost of the Igloo, I think it goes beyond double the value and longevity. Plus the insulation is fantastic.

What I Like

  • I like the three separate compartments—it acts more like an insulated backpack than a cooler you can carry on your back.
  • Of the sub-$100 coolers I tested, Igloo had the best insulation.
  • Igloo put a lot of thought into their features: elastic mesh sides, metal bottle opener, t-handles on the zippers, elastic bungee on the front, and nylon webbing on left strap.

What I Don’t Like

  • Because the Igloo is built like an insulated backpack rather than a cooler, there are some gaps in the insulation that cause it to underperform compared to other brands (though it still was the best sub-$100 backpack cooler for insulation in my tests).
  • Compared to the other backpack coolers I got, I think it’s the worst looking.

Who is the Igloo Voyager for?

The Igloo Voyager is for you if you’re looking to spend less than $100 and you want something that can hold a chill for a few hours—if you only ever need to keep cold temperatures until lunch and you’re not doing anything high-impact, then the Igloo MaxCold Voyager will get the job done.

The Verdict

The Igloo MaxCold Voyager is my top budget-friendly backpack cooler (under $100).

It outperformed the Tourit Cockatoo in just about every way (except I think the Tourit looks cooler, but that’s really not that big of a deal).

While the Igloo is my budget pick, I think it’s really worth considering the Icemule Pro.

The Icemule Pro does cost about double what the Igloo costs, and you’re breaking that $100 level, but the value you get is well worth it in my opinion.

The waterproof lining in the Igloo is pretty thin, and I can see something catching it and tearing it fairly easily—then it’s game over for the cooler.

But the Icemule Pro is a tough beast, it’s waterproof, and it’s made with rubberized ripstop fabric that is really hard to destroy. Plus the insulation is close to YETI level, but at a far lower cost.

The YETI Hopper M20 is the best of the best, but it costs over five times more than the Igloo, so it seems a little ridiculous to recommend it here. Still, if quality is your utmost consideration, then the YETI is the way.

If you get the Igloo MaxCold Voyager, I think you’ll be happy with your purchase. And I also think you’ll be buying another backpack cooler within the next five years. The Icemule might sting a bit more on the upfront costs, but I bet it would be the last backpack cooler you’ll need.

Can I put ice in my Igloo backpack cooler?

Yes, you can and should put ice in your Igloo backpack cooler. I recommend two to three pounds of ice to keep everything cold while still leaving plenty of room for your snackies.

How long does the Igloo backpack cooler keep cold?

My Igloo backpack cooler kept its contents below room temperature for 31 hours. It held contents below 40 degrees (food-safe temp) for 19 hours, and below 50 degrees (chilled drinks) for 25 hours.

Is the Igloo backpack cooler waterproof?

No, the Igloo MaxCold Voyager isn’t waterproof, nor is it air-tight.

Igloo Backpack Cooler Review

Last Updated by Brandon F. on August 19, 2022

The I gloo Backpack Cooler has been one of the more popular Igloo products for quite some time.  The series has gone through quite a few changes over the years but one thing has remained the same: Igloo strives to offer a high-quality and mobile backpack for a reasonable price.   We will go over all of the different types of Igloo Backpack Coolers below in our full review.  But first, here are some of our top choices for the best Igloo Backpack Coolers.

Igloo Sportsman Waterproof Backpack Cooler, Tan/Black/Orange, 17 Quart (16 L)

Igloo Backpack Cooler Lineup

Igloo Backpack Cooler Review

Buy on Amazon

There are several different sub-series of backpacks to choose from.  Currently, you can choose between Maxcold Backpack Coolers, Outdoorsman Gizmo Backpack Cooler Bags , Daytripper Backpack Cooler Bags , Realtree Gizmo Backpack Cooler Bags, Marine Ultra Backpack Coolers , Sportsman Backpack Coolers , and Hard Top Backpack Coolers.

That is a lot of different products to choose from!

It might be overwhelming trying to figure out which model is best for you, but most of them share a lot of similar traits (we will discuss this in greater detail in the features section).

As for capacity, there is a decent size range .  But, being a backpack , you won’t find any huge coolers that hold 50+ quarts (that would make for a very large backpack!).  These backpacks are more intended for daily use or perhaps a weekend.

Size capacity ranges from around 17 quarts up to 32 quarts .  This is large enough to store anywhere from 18 to 32 cans or quite a few chilled lunch items.  If you are wanting something on the smaller side then stick with Sportsman Backpack or the Maxcold Backpack Cooler .  And if you need something a bit larger, we recommend the Marine Ultra Switch Convertible Backpack or the Outdoorsman Gizmo Backpack .

Igloo Backpack Cooler Features

Igloo has managed to squeeze in quite a few features into their backpacks.  As we mentioned earlier, there will be some specific traits that are exclusive to a given model but most of the features are commonly shared across most products.

Igloo Backpack Cooler Review

Any quality backpack needs to be able to have adjustable straps for different people and different situations.  Igloo has this covered and offers very easy-to-use adjustable straps on all of their backpack coolers.  This means that no matter your size or shape, you can likely find a setting that will be comfortable for you.

Igloo Backpack Cooler Review

In addition, many models have multiple carrying methods .  This can include not only overhead carrying handles but also a padded shoulder strap.  And in some models, this shoulder strap can be tucked away in a pocket to get out of the way when not in use.

Igloo Backpack Cooler Review

You will also find that the inner liner of Igloo Backpack Coolers is leak resistant and also coated in an antimicrobial material .  This helps to minimize the chance of bacteria or other nasty stuff growing on the liner.  This can be a lifesaver while out on the trails or camping .  But is also great around the home or at the park as well.  We all know how easy it is to spill items!

Outside of this liner, you will find Maxcold insulation on nearly every model.  Also, Igloo has recently increased the thickness of their Ultratherm foam by up to 25% .  This gives these backpacks a nice boost in ice retention .

Igloo Backpack Cooler Review

One of the best qualities of these products is the huge number of storage options you will enjoy.  No matter which specific model you go with, you will find ample additional external storage thanks to a host of clever zippered and mesh pockets .  You can put the valuable and fragile items that you want better protected inside the zippered pockets and the more durable items can be stuck in one of the mesh side pockets.

One of our favorite models is the Sportsman Backpack Cooler .  You can read up on how much we enjoyed the hard-sided Igloo Sportsman Coolers in our giant review and their backpack is just as impressive.

Igloo Backpack Cooler Review

It comes with some clever additional features including Cool Riser Technology, a drain plug, and even a bottle opener!  This is the all-in-one backpack that you have been looking for.

While there are plenty of features that help with usability, Igloo also has you covered when it comes to build quality.

The seams that hold the various panels together enjoy t hick and durable seams that ensure leak resistance and the ability to handle the wear and tear of daily use.  In addition, in models such as the Marine Ultra Backpack, you will find non-corrosive hardware and attachment points that can be exposed to water without concern.

Igloo Backpack Cooler Ice Life

Ice retention is very important, even on a backpack cooler.  And while you likely won’t see the level of ice retention that you are used to seeing on hard-sided coolers , a well-made backpack cooler can still achieve impressive ice duration .

To help maximize this, Igloo has included various features including Maxcold insulation, Ultratherm technology, Cool Riser technology, and a quality liner that will adequately hold melted ice.  Igloo has come out and said that their best backpack coolers can see up to 2 days of ice life!

But what sort of ice numbers are we looking at?

To help with this, we did some of our in-house tests .  We fill the coolers to around 1/3 full of ice , leave them outside, and occasionally open them.  This gives you a better representation of real-life results.  The results we found were as follows:

Igloo Backpack Cooler Review

Overall, we are pretty satisfied with these numbers.  You won’t find ice performance on the level of some of the premium soft-sided coolers offered by Yeti , RTIC , etc. but it is still good enough for your average day trip.

The real winner here is the Sportsman Backpack Cooler .  Thanks to its thick insulation and Cooler Riser technology, ice life should last over a day in most cases.  And while we didn’t quite get to the 2-day mark that Igloo stated, it wasn’t too far off.

Igloo Backpack Cooler Styling

We like the progressive styling of most of these backpack coolers.  You will find that all models come in a nice multi-color layout that has just the right amount of “ pop ”.  That being said, you will be a little limited in what color choices you have: many models only have one color and even the largest color selection is limited to three.

Igloo Backpack Cooler Review

For instance, the image above shows the three current color choices for the Outdoorsman Gizmo Backpack Cooler Bag .

Igloo Backpack Cooler Price

A big reason why these backpack coolers are so popular is because of their price.  Nearly every model is very reasonably priced and should be within most people’s budgets.  However, there will be a decent range of costs.  For instance, the top-of-the-line Igloo Sportsman Backpack will fetch a higher premium due to its advanced design and higher-tier materials.

But considering ice retention, build quality, and the features that you get, we feel that all Igloo backpack coolers are at an attractive price point .

Igloo Sportsman Waterproof Backpack Cooler, Tan/Black/Orange, 17 Quart (16 L)

17 to 32 quarts

Budget to Intermediate-Priced

Pros : Very reasonably-priced, Nice features, Good build quality, Plenty of choices

Cons : Limited colors, No extreme long-term ice solution

Features: MaxCold insulation, Multiple storage pockets, Cool Riser technology, Ultratherm insulation, adjustable straps, bottle opener, antimicrobial liner

The Igloo Backpack Cooler comes in a host of sizes, colors, and configurations.  But all share a common theme of being extremely mobile and offering good build quality.  Ice life will vary but can be up to a day and a half or so with the highest-end model.  But all models will enjoy a boost in ice life thanks to the recent update that increased insulation thickness by up to 25%.  Storage sizes range from around 17 quarts up to 32 quarts.

Insulation Ability –

We are really happy that Igloo decided to implement 25% thicker MaxCold insulation technology on these backpacks.  It helps pump up with ice retention ability and makes most of them capable of a typical day trip.  The higher-end models will include additional insulating foam, Cool Riser technology, and optimized construction to stretch the ice life even further.  Depending on which model you go with and the specific conditions you put it through, you can expect ice life to be anywhere from 5 hours up to 36 hours.

Mobility and Durability –

Being a backpack cooler, mobility is almost a given.  You will find several of these models come with multiple carrying methods and also offer adjustable straps.  For storage, there will be plenty of additional pockets (both zippered and mesh) to store your non-chilled items.  And certain models will come with unique features that cater to a particular audience (for instance, the Marine Ultra line will come with corrosion-resistant hardware and a beefed-up outer shell).

Build quality across the board is quite nice.  The seams are solid and the fabrics used are thick enough to handle typical wear and tear.

Visual Appeal –

We like the attractive styling of the Igloo Backpack Coolers.  All of the models have undergone a recent facelift and the styling is both progressive yet still practical.  All models will offer multi-color designs that typically feature some subtle colors and a bit of bright color the some “pop”.  If we had to make a minor complaint, is that we wish Igloo would offer up some more color options for a particular model.

Cost –

In general, you will find the costs of these backpacks to be very reasonable.  Igloo has always been known for its attractive price point and that is no different here.  You will find that the top-tier models do creep up a bit more in price but that comes with improved performance and build quality.  So you are getting more for your money.

Overall Rating –

The Igloo Backpack Cooler lineup is an overall success.  We like the recent updates that Igloo has made to them.  Previous reliability issues seem to be sorted out and overall ice life has also enjoyed an increase.  Plus there are enough models and sizes to meet most people’s needs.  You won’t find an ultra-premium model that can hang with the best from Yeti and RTIC but for those who are ok with a step below this (and for a much lower asking price), Igloo has you covered.

A man wears an Igloo backpack cooler over a pink background. Next to him, another shot of an Igloo cooler sits open.

The Igloo Soft Cooler Backpack keeps you refreshed wherever you trek.

The Igloo Backpack Cooler is the best backpack cooler we tested, and it's a prime example of what a backpack cooler should be. It has adjustable padded straps for comfortable carry, it can store up to 30 cans, and has plenty of extra storage space for things that don’t need to be kept cool, like wet wipes.

During our cold retention tests, the Igloo kept our sensors under 40°F for around nine-and-a-half hours. With a 10.5-liter interior capacity, the Igloo Backpack Cooler has additional exterior storage, including a padded zip pocket on the back for flat items (like books) and two side mesh pockets with straps for insulated water bottles.

Overall, this is the best backpack cooler for keeping food and drink cool during a day-long hike while also having a little extra space for other essentials.

A man wears a Carhartt Backpack cooler on a yellow backdrop, next to him, the same model sits open, showing its contents.

The Carhartt Cooler Backpack comes with deep hybrid storage and reliable insulation.

After testing out the Carhartt Cooler Backpack, it strikes the right balance between functioning as a cooler and a backpack.

The insulated cooler compartment is located in the bottom section. The upper compartment is a cavernous space with mesh pockets.

You can expect all-day cooling if you keep the bottom compartment locked up tight. In our 72°F test chamber, the Carhartt kept our sensors cool for over 17 hours.

Based on how the straps felt during testing, the Carhartt Cooler Backpack is best suited for short trips. Also, since the bottom cooler is relatively small, holding six cans comfortably with ice, it’s better to keep an individual’s lunch cold at a worksite or a solo day at the beach.

Other Backpack Coolers We Tested

Product image of Tourit Cygnini Insulated Backpack

Tipping the scales at just over a pound and having a very compact design, the Tourit Backpack Cooler is built to go along for the ride. The Tourit is one of the best backpack coolers for outdoor excursions like cycling or kayaking. It even has a bottle opener sewn right into one of its straps.

Our temperature sensors recorded an interior temperature of less than 40°F for about 10 hours, which is about on par with our best overall pick.

We really liked the Tourit Backpack Cooler for its quality cold retention, compact size, and versatile storage. Over 22,000 Amazon reviewers give this backpack cooler a 4.5 out of 5-star rating; however, our research suggests that it’s not particularly durable and may leak within a year of purchase.

If you need a small backpack cooler for occasional, light use, then the Tourit is a solid bet.

Product image of Arctic Zone Titan 24 Can Backpack Cooler

The Arctic Zone Titan Deep Freeze is one of the best backpack coolers because it is very compact and portable. One feature that sets it apart from its competitors is that the interior is treated with Microban, which resists mildew and odor. This is great if you’re the type of person who plans on using this backpack once or twice a year, while the rest of the time, it sits in the garage.

Our cold retention test results show that the Arctic Zone Titan keeps a below-40°F internal temperature for just over 18 hours, almost double the amount of time as our best overall pick.

While this backpack cooler excels at keeping things cold, its storage potential lags behind its competitors. Everything felt too cramped and it was difficult to grab what we wanted from inside.

Product image of Swig Life Packi Backpack Cooler

It has adjustable, cushioned shoulder straps and a top handle if you'd rather carry it like a purse than a backpack.

As a cooler, it’s okay. It kept the internal temperature under 40°F for about 11 hours.

We didn’t like how limited the extra storage was. There are two magnetic-close side pockets and one back slot for non-chilled items.

That all being said, we awarded it some bonus points because there are so few backpack coolers there that sparked any joy in us while still putting up decent performance numbers. The Swig Life backpack cooler is ideal for day trips to the pool, out on the boat, or to the beach.

Product image of Rtic Backpack Cooler

Like its cousin, this backpack cooler is designed to be durable, float, and provide plenty of insulation. During our cold retention test, it kept our sensors under 40°F for over 14 hours.

However, our biggest gripe with the Rtic is that it’s more expensive than other backpack coolers we tested.

Product image of Coleman Chiller 28-Can Soft-Sided Backpack Cooler

The Coleman Backpack Cooler looks like someone took a regular backpack and lined the inside with insulation. It has a front pouch for non-chilled items and enough space in the cooler section for about 15 cans with ice.

According to our temperature sensors, the Coleman did not retain cold well. Even while filled with frozen cold packs, the internal temperature never fell below 40°F like other backpack coolers we tested.

However, the Coleman is very affordable and comfortable to carry. If that’s what you're after, it could certainly be the pick.

Comfortable design

Decent capacity

Poor cold retention

Product image of Corkcicle Eola Bucket Cooler Bag

The Corkcicle Backpack Cooler is another fashionable pick we tested. However, unlike the Swig Life, the Corkcicle’s test results showed it has more style than substance.

The vegan leather straps are narrow, and the Corkcicle Backpack Cooler is uncomfortable to haul around when fully loaded. This backpack cooler also didn’t do well on the cold retention test, coming in second-to-last place.

Overall, the Corkcicle is slim and cute but only suited to keep a few drinks cold for a short trip.

Uncomfortable fully loaded

Product image of Hydro Flask 20L Day Escape Pack

Rounding out our list is the Hydro Flask Day Escape. During testing, we found major issues that made our testers dislike this 20-liter backpack cooler.

First and foremost, our temperature sensors showed that its price-to-performance ratio isn’t what one would hope. This is one of the most expensive backpack coolers we tested and its cold retention with cold packs wasn’t very good.

We also had about half a dozen people test the Hydro Flask, and not a single one of them enjoyed the experience. The opening of the Hydro Flask naturally wants to close, making it hard to see inside and producing a mild suction feeling when you put your hand in it.

If a backpack cooler isn’t easy or inviting to use, that defeats the purpose.

Visually attractive

Uncomfortable

How We Tested The Best Backpack Coolers

A hand holds a sensor over a loaded backpack cooler.

We test backpack coolers for temperature maintenance with two ice packs and two sensors.

Because most backpack coolers aren’t fully waterproof, we opted to test with ice packs instead. Each backpack cooler got two cold packs that weigh around 800 grams each.

We also tested each one for comfort by loading it up and walking around, evaluating how the straps felt under a full load.

What You Should Know About The Best Backpack Coolers

What to look for in the best backpack coolers.

A man adjusts a strap on a backpack cooler.

Ergonomics are ever important.

Cold retention is one of the most important factors. Look for a backpack cooler that fits your needs based on your activity and how long you will be outside.

Ergonomics are ever important in a backpack, and in a cooler backpack, they’re arguably more important than ever, as these are often quite heavily loaded. Consider the type of straps that best fit your body and feel the most comfortable. A backpack cooler with padded adjustable straps is a versatile option.

Bodies vary greatly, if you have specific needs from a backpack, make sure to look for them.

How Can I Keep My Backpack Cooler Cold Longer?

You can also keep your freezer packs frozen until just before you’re planning to take off.

When not in use, leave your cooler in the shade and keep it out of direct sunlight.

Can I Use Ice In My Backpack Cooler?

Two hands load ice packs into a backpack cooler.

We pack our backpack coolers with two ice packs.

While some backpack coolers are waterproof and won’t leak, others will. As a general rule of thumb, we think good ice packs are better than ice. Ice packs also make for an easier clean-up than melted ice.

Can I Use Dry Ice In A Backpack Cooler?

Dry ice could also be a solution for some backpack coolers, as it won’t puddle when it melts. However dry ice has real downsides. While it’s way colder than water ice, dry ice melts very quickly.

As it melts, dry ice releases dangerous carbon dioxide. If you decide to use it, we recommend wrapping it in newspaper and keeping it at the bottom of your cooler.

Generally, we think dry ice isn’t the best choice in a backpack cooler.

What Is A Hybrid Backpack Cooler?

While there’s no hard and fast rule for distinguishing hybrid backpack coolers from regular ones, we made the distinction based on the amount of storage each has.

For example, some backpack coolers come with a significant amount of extra storage space for books and gear, while others are basically one big insulated bag.

Pimp My Gear: Igloo MaxCold Cooler Review

by kim · Published April 15, 2020 · Updated April 23, 2020

The 2020 Igloo MaxCold 50 Quart Cooler

I have owned an Igloo MaxCold cooler for over 12 years.  Since I got it, my Igloo MaxCold has been to many, many backyard parties, music festivals, and camping trips including several abroad as checked baggage. I would say it has had heavy use.

I know, I know, Yeti, Yeti, Yeti. Blah, blah, blah. When we bought this cooler the Yeti, its outrageous price tag, and accompanying social status, was not a part of the camping lexicon. However a new kind of cooler claiming to keep ice for several days at 90-degree temperatures, like the Igloo MaxCold and Coleman Xtreme, was a huge step up from those of the time. We decided to purchase the Igloo MaxCold because of its features, a price that did not break the bank, and the fact that the physical dimensions satisfied the standard checked baggage policy of most airlines.*

Here is my honest review and suggested “pimps” when considering purchasing this cooler.

*Please verify the checked baggage policy of your airline before purchasing.

Product Description

According to IglooCoolers.com :

Play, camp, or fish ’til your heart’s content with extended performance coolers

  • Ultratherm® insulation in body and lid holds ice up to 5 days
  • Reinforced swing-up handles with a tie-down loop feature for versatile carrying and loading
  • Snap-fit latch for secure lid closure during transportation
  • Threaded drain plug for optional hose hook up for easy draining

Igloo MaxCold Coolers offer the ultimate cold retention, with all products featuring insulated lids and all full-size coolers retaining ice 5-7 days in 90° F heat. These extended performance coolers are ideal for camping, hunting, picnics, and the beach. Capacity: 50 Qt / 47 L / 72 Cans. Ice retention: 5 days (tested under controlled conditions).

  • The cooler has swing-up handles that are easy on the hand and give plenty of knuckle room.
  • The Snap-fit latch is OK but sometimes pops open so when it matters (on airplanes or around crafty wildlife) we use straps to keep it closed.
  • The threaded drain plug fits tightly and doesn’t leak as long as it was put on correctly. The drain cap eventually did break off and while still usable, losing it would render the cooler unusable. I understand you can drain it with a hose but I never did that.
  • The 50 qt. capacity is ample space for a short trip or backyard party.

Performance

I have not done an actual test to see if the MaxCold really keeps ice up to 5-7 days in summer temps. However, I would pretty much guarantee that the cooler was never opened during this trial. As we know, in a normal use situation, coolers are opened and closed many times allowing the cold air to escape and ultimately leading to melted ice.  While I have been pretty pleased with how long the ice has kept on my outings, especially comparing it to cheaper coolers, I cannot say for sure that Igloo’s claims are true.  It is my experience that the ice lasts two-ish days with normal use and standard precautions. Even Igloo says “tested under controlled conditions”. So there you go.

When it comes to durability, my cooler has seen heavy use over the years and consequently everything that could break has–latch, hinges, drain plug, and lid cord.  The exception is the body of the cooler itself which, except for yellowing plastic, has stayed remarkably intact.  It should be noted that all of the parts that failed were made of plastic and thus more prone to breakage with heavy use.  Since I have had it over 10 years, I will not call this a fail per se. A big plus, however, is that Igloo offers a cooler repair kit, and all the parts that have broken I have replaced…and replaced again.  Then came the permanent solution.

How We Pimped Our Cooler

The last and final part fail happened on a camping trip to Colorado in 2018. The latch had broken before the trip and instead of replacing it we were keeping it closed with straps for air travel purposes.  Halfway through the trip one of the hinges snapped in half.  We decided to fix it once and for all. No more plastic. At a hardware store we purchased a metal piano hinge and a metal latch.  I am happy to report that this solution has lasted for 2 years so far and it is looking like these repairs will be the last.

All in all, I would buy the Igloo MaxCold again.  Since purchasing this cooler over a decade ago, coolers have evolved.  The Yeti and coolers like it, have really upped the game. However, with this increased performance the cost has gone up exponentially.  I think the Igloo MaxCold balances performance and price tag and is an excellent choice for those who need a dependable cooler on a budget. My one request to Igloo would be to upgrade to metal fixtures where possible. Until this happens I would replace broken plastic parts with metal the first time they break…or maybe even before. 🙂

Cooler Pro Tips & Fun Facts

COOLER PRO TIP #1:

Make blocks of ice or freeze water in 2-liter bottles to include with your regular cubed ice.  If possible, put meat and other food in the cooler frozen when you start out. Keep the cooler in the shade if possible.  Also, placing an insulating light-colored blanket over it will help the ice will last longer.

COOLER PRO TIP #2

If possible, bring two coolers on your camping trip.  Use one to store food and one for beverages.  Coolers lose their temperature every time there are open.  Since the coolers are typically opened most for getting drinks, use a separate cooler for that purpose.

COOLER PRO TIP #3

If you are taking your cooler camping to a destination requiring a flight, make sure the dimensions fit the requirements for standard checked baggage with your airline.  If it is too big, you may have to pay for an oversized item.  Pack the cooler with all your favorite kitchen essentials making that part of roughing it way more comfortable.  Be sure not to pack anything that is banned by your airline.

COOLER FUN FACT

New Zealanders call a cooler a Chilly Bin where Australians call it an Esky!

These Backpack Coolers Are Made for Summer Activities

Large coolers are great when you have a car, or if you’re hosting a backyard barbecue and need a couple for an array of beverages. But what if you’re hitting the beach, going camping , or attending an outdoor concert? You need a backpack cooler. They’re incredibly convenient to carry anything — beer, soda, water, or snacks — for miles at a time!

Brands like YETI, Hydro Flask, and Orca have been upping their backpack cooler game for this warm-weather season and launching an array of new products, from minimalist models to heavy-duty, adventure-ready bags that keep ice in tact for multiple days. Check out our favorite backpack coolers and load them up with food and drinks for your next big outing.

Out of all the coolers on our list, this backpack from Hydro Flask is our favorite in terms of style. You can take it on a daytime trek, or carry it to concerts, picnics, etc., and fit right in with the rest of the crowd. Plus, it also features Hydro Flask's smart-insulation technology, so anything inside will stay cold for up to 48 hours. The nylon lining is completely waterproof, and the zippers feature a leakproof design as well.

We've tested out this cooler during beach and boat excursions, and can attest to the comfort level. The backpack itself is pretty lightweight, so all you have to manage is the stuff inside. It also doesn't leave any red marks on your shoulders like other backpacks sometimes do, so that's another win in our books!

More: Top-Rated Waterproof Backpacks for Outdoor Adventures

This backpack cooler by YETI, named one of the most comfortable backpack coolers to carry by Outside magazine, is the perfect excuse to add some mileage onto your next hike. For 24 hours. this backpack is all you need to keep a day's worth of food and drinks cool for 24 hours. The exterior fabric is waterproof and resistant to punctures, UV rays, and mildew, which is pretty important when you're out in the woods or on the rocks. You can thank the closed-cell rubber foam for keeping everything at a nice temp.

otterbox.com

The Trooper LT 30 by OtterBox is the perfect adventure companion, with premium thermal insulation that keeps ice frozen for up to three days, whether you're miles away from shore with a deep-sea fishing rod or jeeping through the desert trying to get lost.

Two wide backpack straps disperse the load for long hauls, and the large-mouth opening provides easy access to the contents at the bottom, so you can bust out a cold one as soon as you find a spot to set up shop. Our favorite feature is obviously the exterior-mounted bottle opener, which proves that Otterbox knows you well!

orcacoolers.com

With proper packing, this Podster can retain ice for days. One of the best things about this backpack cooler is when you're ready to take it off of your back and set it down, it will sit sturdy on just about any surface. Just lift the lid as if it were a regular cooler! From day hikes to short camping trips, you'll be sure to have ice cold brews on hand with this pick!

Igloo's Marine lineup is made for watersports , with MaxCold insulation and a UV-protective shell that keep your lunch and rack of cheap domestics chilly, even when cooking in direct sunlight on the open water from sunup to sundown.

Zippers are corrosion-resistant, and the interior is antimicrobial and anti-mildew, which helps to prevent buildup in case you forget about some perishables for an unforgivable amount of time.

If you're looking for the perfect backpack to keep your lunch and hydration options (wine counts!) fresh, this smaller pick by Indago8 is your best option. It's ideal for light hikes by the river or patient picnics in the park since it won't weigh you down unnecessarily.

Enjoy plenty of room to load up on lunch so you can have the afternoon in the outdoors of your dreams. It's also ideal for tailgating and local sporting events and festivals. It folds down neatly, too.

Pack a lunch for the family in this insulated backpack, that weighs a measly 1.1 pounds! Load it up with sandwiches, fresh fruit, snack bars, and your beverage of choice (don't get any ideas, Dad), then toss in some reusable ice packs. With the money you save, there may even be some change leftover for souvenirs!

Looking for a high-performing yet affordable option? This one features a nylon shell that's super tough, high-density open cell foam insulation that keeps ice for up to 24 hours, and highly padded straps that won't hurt your shoulders, even when stuffed with 18 cans and a 10-pound bag of ice! The top zipper isn't leakproof, but as long as this wallet-friendly cooler is kept upright, you'll keep beers cold and money in your pocket — where it belongs!

Icemule's Boss doesn't take anything lightly, as you can tell by the burly, take-no-prisoners design. Icemule designed this like a technical overnight bag to make carrying a heavy load of food and drinks nearly effortless, with a backpack suspension system that includes a ventilated back panel and shoulder straps, a cushioned hip belt to offset weight, and a sternum strap to lock everything in place.

In addition to being super portable, the Boss stays cold for multiple days, thanks to the company's PolarLayer XT Insulation, and an air valve that can be inflated for even more cold retention, so you can keep your freshly caught fish alive until it hits the grill at camp a few days later! It also features a roll-top closure that'll never leak, three large exterior pockets, tie downs for boating or kayaking , and Icemule's proprietary MuleSkin fabric that's puncture-resistant, even if it gets dragged around the back of your ATV while off-roading.

Editor's note: As of March 9, 2023, YETI has recalled 1.9 million soft coolers and gear cases in relation to a magnet ingestion hazard. The recall includes the Hopper M30 Soft Cooler 1.0 and 2.0, Hopper M20 Soft Backpack Cooler, and SideKick Dry Gear Case. Those who have purchased any of these products are advised to immediately stop using the recalled products and contact YETI for a refund or replacement.

"Hearst Magazines and Yahoo may earn commission or revenue on some items through these links." Load up a cooler with backpack straps, and you'll never have to reach past your own shoulder for a cold drink or snack.
