Under the current instructions of the  Finnish Border Guard,  the following requirements apply to foreigners entering Finland from  outside of the EU and Schengen area : 

• a certificate of a full approved COVID-19 vaccination series,  OR
• a certificate of having had the COVID-19 disease and one approved COVID-19 vaccine,  OR
• an EU Digital COVID Certificate for a COVID-19 disease had less than six months ago.

You need a valid passport that satisfactorily establishes your identity and nationality. If you aren’t a citizen of Finland or another European Economic Area (EEA) country, you may also need a visa.  Please check with your local Finnish Embassy , and they’ll be happy to help you.  

Finland is a year-round destination: Winters are great for outdoor activities like downhill skiing, cross-country skiing, skating and ice-swimming. Spring and autumn are the best seasons to see the Northern Lights in Finnish Lapland. Late summer and autumn are ideal for foraging and enjoying colourful autumn foliage. The spring months (until early May) offer the best skiing in Lapland – in the south, the snow will be gone by then. The summer months across Finland are known for their white nights, and in Lapland, as a time when the sun never sets. Finland is the eighth most expensive country in Europe  according to a  Eurostat study  of 2017. Followed by Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, Denmark, Sweden, Ireland, and Luxembourg, the Nordic country has shown to be an expensive country based on the following informatin

If you would like travel around Finland and get the best of each region, 10 to 14 days  should suffice. However, if you intend to just stay in one region such as just within the Arctic Circle or just Helsinki, you would just need 4 to 6 days to do so.

You can fly, cruise or drive. 

Arriving by plane : Helsinki-Vantaa (HEL) airport is the country’s biggest airport that connects you easily to other parts of the country, as well as other countries.  Besides Helsinki, there are many other airports, such as Rovaniemi in Lapland, that offer direct international flights. 

Arriving by boat : Helsinki has ferry connections with Germany, Poland, Sweden, Latvia and Estonia. You can also arrive by ferry in Vaasa, Turku, or Hanko from Sweden.

MISLEADING COVID POLICY AND RUDE CUSTOMER SERVICE I am very sad to say I was truly disappointed with my experience with this travel agency. I booked a journey for the Northern Lights experience, but the information regarding the covid policy was highly confusing and contradictory. I have asthma which prevents me from being able to wear a face mask for a prolonged time. The bus tour was going to be about 12 hours and I kindly asked customer service if it was truly necessary to wear a mask during all this time. They bluntly respoded 'YES', This information was, by the way, really hard to find on their website, and I was confused from the beginning by all the different 'policies', which seemed contradictory to each other. In the end, I had to cancel, only to get half of my money back and find out later, by a friend who attended that trip, that they actually did NOT had to wear a mask at all during the bus trip... In other words - customer service lied to me about the face mask policy and they took half of my money for the trip, even though I cancelled in time. Can't even express my disappointment. Terrible!

Our experience with Nordic Unique was great. As a little older group some tours did not appeal to us and they were great about rearranging the itinerary. There could have been a little more communication prior to the trip. I would also suggest some kayaks at the lake. Our guide Matthias (Niales) was awesome!! He was patient, kind, knowledgeable and a great cook.

We booked the Husky ‘tour’ which took exactly 2 minutes for 322 euro’s. With dropoff and everything it took 45 minutes. On the website it says 2,5 hours. It was extremely dissapointing. If I could give it - 5 stars, I would do that. Don’t book it with Unique Travel, book it somewhere else.

Overall the tour was good. we paid to update our room as we wanted a view of the river. The hotel was very good, meals were excellent. We booked an ENGLISH speaking tour. Aurora our guide did speak english but because there were 34 of the 36 people in our group did not. there were 18 spanish and 17 french speaking only! So had no opportunity to converse with others on our tour. At times we felt left out and lonely. we were very disappointed with this aspect of the tour. Especially when it came to instructions with snow mobile, didn't get to hear any english, so my confidence was low and ended up stopping after a short while , and not driving snow mobile, but got in sleigh pulled by Instructor. The husky and reindeer rides were fantastic , the highlight of our trip. The farms were interesting and well kept. The 5 hrs dropped off at Santa Village was too long . we ended up finding our bus and sitting there for an hour or so. Would have nice to be given option of a shorted time. The thermal clothing at Safartica was poor. The items were very used and not at all comfortable. I only ended up using the overalls, and my own boots, balaclava, socks, scarf and mittens. I would not recommend them. Over all we had a great time , but unsure if we would recommend the tour with others.

Very smooth experience. Stayed in comfy cabin around the hotel, not hotel building. Found many hairs on sheets the first night but they were changed. Hotel meals were excellent and got to use pools and spa. One experience cancelled and refunded. Other experiences fun.

The itinerary in Rovaniemi had several inconsistencies with the real bookings, making difficult for me to trust what was correct and create stress during vacation. My check out of the Igloo hotel was at 8am, but actually was no needed to be so early since the real time booking for Husky adventure was at noon instead of the morning, At same time i learn that the hotel in the city was reserved also for the same night as the Igloo hotel, makes me wonder if that night was double charged. The New years dinner was very confusing, because was reserved under Clarisa travel agency and was not clear the names of the persons also that we were not actually together, so the service start late because they were waiting for everyone to arrived.

I had a wonderful time on my Lapland Winter Adventure, as arranged by Arif, out of Carisa Travel. He was organized, and made things very clear to me, which I appreciated because I was traveling alone.,

This tour was wonderful! Our guides were very knowledgeable and friendly - and they kept us warm (we rented the recommended clothing, which was smart). Everything about the tour went very smoothly. There were six people in our group and we enjoyed getting to know each other. We visited with a Sami reindeer herding woman and got to hand feed some of her reindeer, we went on a dogsled ride, and we stayed a couple nights with a Sami man at his comfortable encampment. We skied across a frozen lake by his home, took a sauna, and rolled in the snow afterward. The Arctic is beautiful and different from what I'd envisioned. And we saw the Northern Lights on two nights - they are beautiful and awe-inspiring. It was the trip of a lifetime and my wife and I both loved it.

By far the best holiday i have experienced. Wild Sweden delivered a seamless and really enjoyable tour from Lulea to Jokkmokk and back. All the gourmet meals, quality accommodation and unique experiences in the stunning North will stay with me as fantastic memories. From the initial sign-up through to the highly professional guides, Wild Sweden made navigating the Arctic terrain effortless and comfortable with advice and custom equipment for first timers like myself. I truly appreciated the relaxed environment on tour with our group - and the adventures we went on. Seeing the bright Northern Lights in clear view was the icing on the cake. I have no complaint except for one incident, which was taken care of. The reason I'm sharing it is so it doesn't happen to the next customer. We were scheduled for a 2h husky safari from 14:00-16:30. From your office we we're scheduled for a transfer at 16:45 to Arctic Snow Hotel. Their wasn't enough time between so we were without a transfer to our hotel. We called ahead but they didn't wait. Our sweet tour guide drove us to the hotel and helped us arrange a new dinner reservations for a later time. Other then that everything was great.

The activities were great, but the transportation had definite issues.

The Zicasso tour company did a nice job planning out the trip and had a person available on WhatsApp until 7pm each day if there were any questions. They were responsive and handled things. There was a little bit of confusion with the guides about what was included and already paid for on a particular day tour, but it was cleared up when we contacted the agency. It happened a few times, so I am not sure if it was a mistake on the driver's or the agency’s part. When it comes to flights, I understand that erring on the side of caution is good, but having us get to the airport three hours early was overkill. At Inverness airport, they wouldn't even let us check in at Logan Air until two hours before the flight. When we flew out of Shannon at the end, we insisted they change the pick-up for the airport so we would get there two hours beforehand, which was plenty of time. I don't fault the company for this, but it may be good for them to consider not having their clients arrive too early at the airports unless the clients prefer that. All that being said, I would use this travel agency again and appreciated the itinerary they put together, the friendly guides for our daily excursions, and their responsiveness when we reached out to them.

Our trip to Finland/Lapland was beyond our expectations. It was like living in a fairytale! All the activities were very well organized and tailored to our needs. We had the experience of a lifetime in Lapland, without having to worry about anything! We definitely gained a new friend in Lapland and will go back. We had a good relationship with our Zicasso travel agent, who helped to organize our dream trip to Japan. The trip itself was lovely. The accommodations were top-notch and our agent created a customized itinerary that accommodated our special requests to attend a baseball game, overnight at a Zen monastery, and visit a tea farm. The only downside was that once we were in Japan, our main contact ended up being another outfit, one that organizes tours for countless tourists each year. As a result, we didn't have consistent contact with our tour operator. It was only possible to reach their representatives via email or by using roaming to call them on ($$$). It would have been better to be able to reach reps and local guides via text message or WhatsApp. The information provided by the in-country tour company hadn't been updated since before the Covid-19 pandemic. It consisted of a series of PDF files with hyperlinks that weren't live, so you couldn't simply click for more information. It left a less-than-luxurious impression. Nevertheless, the trip was still spectacular and we had a great time.

Welcome back to our live coverage of the war in Ukraine. 

Overnight, Russia's defence ministry said it destroyed eight drones launched by Kyiv. 

Three of the drones were destroyed over the Belgorod region, which borders Ukraine, and three were intercepted in the Black Sea, it said. 

We'll be bringing you the latest updates throughout the day, but before we do, here's a round-up of the key events from the last 24 hours: 

• Donald Trump said he's had a "very good call" with Ukraine's president and pledged to end the war with Russia through negotiations. Volodymyr Zelenskyy said he congratulated him on the Republican nomination, and expressed thanks for America's military help;
• Russian drones and missiles struck Ukraine, killing two civilians and hitting energy facilities and railway infrastructure across the country, officials said;
• Three pro-Russian hackers were arrested for alleged cyberattacks against Spain and other NATO countries, Spanish police said;
• Former Ukrainian legislator Iryna Farion, who was best known for her crusade to promote the Ukrainian language, died after being shot in the street by an unknown assailant.

Here are the key events from the day:

• President Zelenskyy said Ukraine had halted Moscow's forces completely in the Kharkiv region;
• Germany looks set to halve its military funding for Ukraine next year;
• Crimea and Russian Black Sea ports were targeted by Ukraine overnight;
• The EU's president dubbed Viktor Orban's visit to Moscow an "appeasement tour";
• Mr Zelenskyy appealed for European unity, defence systems and diplomacy during a visit to Blenheim Palace in the UK.

Five people have been killed and three injured in Russian attacks on the Donetsk region, prosecutors have said. 

A woman and her husband were killed in artillery shelling in the village of Pleshchiivka, the general prosecutor's office said.

Another three women were killed in a strike on private buildings in the village of Hrodivka, it added.

Separately, the Russian military dropped two guided bombs on the village of Velyka Novosilka, injuring a man and his wife inside their house, while another man was wounded in an artillery strike in the town of Zalizne.

In April this year, the US finally approved a long-awaited aid package worth some $60.8bn (£49bn) in aid to Ukraine.

Included were vast quantities of much-needed weapons and ammunition meant for the frontlines - which Kyiv had been desperately calling for for months. 

So how have they impacted the war? 

Nichita Gurcov, Eurasia analyst for Armed Conflict Location & Event Data Project  (ACLED) told Sky News it may actually have pushed Moscow to act quickly and launch fresh attacks.

"It may have prodded Russia to step up its offensive to claim as much ground as possible, before the arriving weapons make it harder," he says. 

Russia resumed its offensive in October last year after fending off the latest Ukrainian attempt to cut the land corridor to Crimea, Gurcov explains. 

"By mid-February [this year] Russia secured the Avdiivka stronghold and has been since pressing toward Ukrainian logistical hub in Pokrovsk," he said. 

ACLED has counted the number of settlements gained by Russia in each month of the conflict. 

Five were taken in February, but just two in March.

In April (the month the US aid package was announced), seven settlements were captured, followed by nine in May and 11 in June - highlighting a clear increase in Russian offensive action. 

"The sharp increase in the number of claimed settlements in May is due to the Russian re-invasion of the northern Kharkiv region," Gurcov explains. 

"It could have pursued - diverting Ukrainian forces from elsewhere - but so far has been contained," he adds (see 11.40am post).

Another indicator of increased fighting is the number of reported battles, according to ACLED:  

"The sharp increase in fighting in April and the subsequent near-50% increase in May is an all-time high since the invasion," Gurcov notes. 

"The spike is only partially due to the re-invasion of the Kharkiv region as we are recording steadily intensifying offensive in the Donetsk region," he adds. 

Closing arguments in the trial of Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich will be heard in a Russian court tomorrow. 

Mr Gershkovich attended a trial session for a second day behind closed doors today - more in our 8.10am post on that.  

The 32-year-old was arrested in March last year while on a reporting trip. Authorities claimed, without offering any evidence, that he was gathering secret information for the US - which he, his employer and his government all vehemently deny. 

Russia will not rule out new deployments of nuclear missiles in response to the planned US stationing of long-range conventional weapons in Germany, Moscow's deputy foreign minister Sergei Ryabkov has said. 

Russia regularly threatens Europe and the US with the nuclear option in public. 

"I am not ruling out any options," the Interfax news agency said he told reporters in the Russian capital when asked to comment on the US deployment plans.

Washington said last week it would start deployment in Germany from 2026 of weapons that will include SM-6, Tomahawk and new hypersonic missiles in order to demonstrate its commitment to NATO and European defence.

Interfax cited Mr Ryabkov as saying that the defence of Russia's Kaliningrad region, which is wedged between NATO members Poland and Lithuania, was a particular focus.

"Kaliningrad is no exception in terms of our 100% determination to do everything necessary to push back those who may harbour aggressive plans and who try to provoke us to take certain steps that are undesirable for anyone and are fraught with further complications," Mr Ryabkov said.

Is there a possibility of internal dissent within Putin's inner circle leading to his removal from power?

Moscow correspondent Ivor Bennett   replies:

"Not right now, no. This seems extremely unlikely for a number of reasons.

"Firstly, Vladimir Putin has just started a new presidential term, keeping him in the Kremlin for another six years.

"The potential political jeopardy of an election has evaporated and his approval ratings are near record highs (85% according to the independent Levada Center), helped by Russia gaining the upper hand on the battlefield in Ukraine.

"So there's no overt public support for a change at the top.

"Secondly, who would succeed him? His refusal to pick a successor all these years has been deliberate, and a key factor in preserving his power.

"Thirdly, his potential rivals are focused elsewhere.

"Look at what’s happening at the ministry of defence and the series of corruption scandals. By replacing his long-time ally Sergei Shoigu as minister of defence, Putin seemed to open the doors to a full-on purge of the military’s top brass.

"Analysts say this was a deliberate ploy to play his rivals off against each other - security services vs the military. By doing that, they're less likely to take a shot at him.

"Yes, it's only been a year since his authority was challenged like never before, with the Prigozhin-led uprising. But fast-forward 12 months and his grip on power appears stronger than ever."

A Russian court has sentenced US citizen Michael Travis Leake to 13 years in prison on drug smuggling charges, the court service has said in a statement. 

Mr Leake, a musician and former US paratrooper - who was arrested in June 2023 - was found guilty of selling drugs on a large scale, the court service said.

It was not clear how he pleaded.

He is one of about a dozen Americans currently held in Russian detention - alongside Wall Street Journal reporter Evan Gershkovich, whose trial continued today (see 8.10am post). 

Another American, Robert Romanov Woodland, was sentenced by a Russian court to 12-1/2 years for drug smuggling earlier this month.

European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen's desire to create "a true European Defence Union" if she is re-elected shows the mood in Europe is one of militarisation and confrontation, the Kremlin has said. 

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov said the plans reflected Ms von der Leyen's "changing priorities" and said her proposals gave a "military colouring" to the EU.

Mr Peskov told reporters that her proposal "confirms the general attitude of European states to militarisation, escalation of tension, confrontation and reliance on confrontational methods in their foreign policy".

"Everything is quite obvious here," he added.
