What type of license do I need to rent an RV in Canada ?

As part of an  RV rental in Calgary , or elsewhere in Canada, many people wonder if they should have an international driving license or a special license to drive an RV.

We won't let the mystery hang too long: the short answer is no .

In fact, you just need to have a valid regular driver's license from your home country to ren an RV for your Canada tours.

Here are the two conditions to meet for your license to be accepted here:

1- Your license must use the Latin alphabet.

2- Primary and additional drivers must have obtained their official driving license at least 12 months prior to the rental.

In all cases, rental companies only accept to rent vehicles to people aged 21 and over.

These conditions can be different for RV rental in the U.S.

What is the minimum age to rent an RV?

Before renting an RV in Canada, make sure that the primary driver and additional driver(s) are of age to rent a vehicle.

The minimum age varies from one renter to another, anywhere between 21 and 25 years old.

Here are the minimum age requirements depending on the renter:

Cité Caravane: 25  Fraserway: 21 Four Seasons: 21 Canadream: 21 Cruise Canada: 21 Best Time: 21 Happy Holidays: 21

When should I book my RV?

Every year, many travelers find themselves unable to rent an RV in Canada, due to lack of availability.

Indeed, this form of travel is very popular and unfortunately, the demand is higher than the offer , especially during high season.

If you want to hire a vehicle during the months of July and August , book early (at least six months in advance), since it is our high season. Sometimes reservations open up to 1 year in advance and this can greatly affect the price of your trip.

Finally, it is also better to book your RV before buying your plane tickets to ensure you won't have any bad surprise, especially if you necessitate a one-way and / or high season rental.

Book early!

What is the best time for Canada tours by RV?

With no great surprise, the summer season is the best time to plan an RV road trip in Canada.

Although the rental of RVs with us is possible between May 1st and October 31st, we do recommend mid-May to mid-October more.

High season is undoubtedly between early July and mid-August.

The RVs are then in great demand. This means that the availability is very limited. If you choose to travel during high season, plan to reserve your vehicle at least six months in advance to ensure availability.

The months of June and September are very interesting to plan your Canada tours in RV because the temperature is pleasant, there are a lot less tourists and the rental prices are very competitive.

The beginning of October offers an astonishing charm in Eastern Canada, with its Indian summer phenomenon. The trees are then adorned with their multicolored leaves, offering quite a spectacle! It is definitely a good time to consider if you're interested in  Eastern Canada tours .

Can I cancel my booking free of charge?

Here are the penalties you should expect if you cancel your RV rental following a reservation:

  • FREE cancellation up to 72 hours after booking
  • Between 72 hours after booking and 61 days or more before departure: 20% of the price
  • Between 60 and 46 days before departure : 25% of the price
  • Between 45 and 15 days before departure: 50% of the price
  • Less than 15 days before departure: 100% of the price

One-way rental fees are due in full, if applicable, 72 hours after your reservation is made.

However, it is possible to subscribe to a cancellation protection in order to avoid all these costs in the case of an unforeseen event. This cancellation protection is exclusively offered on our RV rental comparison tool and is part of the advantages of renting your RV through a canadian travel agency .

Do I have to rent a child car seat?

In Canada, child car seats must meet the Canadian Motor Vehicle Safety Standards (CMVSS).

If your seat does meet these standards, take it with you! Most airlines will let your board with it free of charge and your child will be more comfortable, just like at home.

Otherwise, you will have to think about renting a child seat for your Canada tours. This option is payable in advance or on site, depending on the rental company.

Please note that not all RV rental companies offer this option.

Discover Montreal (Sainte Rose)

This is the ideal spot for the musician of the bunch to take in the rich history of the acoustic treasures that the village of Sainte-Rose, Quebec holds. Known for its parish church, built in the early 1700's, Sainte-Rose holds tons of concerts each year for tourists and passer-byers to enjoy and why stop there? Experience the rest of this amazing Montreal area, by dropping by your Cruise Canada RV rental office at 198 Boulevard Cure LaBellel and climbing aboard for a tour of Quebec, Canada.

Start your journey by heading down the QC-30 O to QC-134 E and head straight into the heart of Montreal. Make the first stop one that could very well serve as the best place to start your discovery of this busy city. At The Museum of Archeology and History, take a unique underground elevator tour and explore the city's archeological dig that has revealed ancient ruins. You can learn all about the beginning of the original colony, to the present-day city of Montreal.

From ruins to roller coasters … you can park your motorhome at one of several nearby campgrounds, or in the parking lot of Montreal’s world-class (and Quebec’s largest) theme park at La Ronde! With rides and entertainment for all ages, La Ronde is jam packed with gut-churning plunges and kid-friendly attractions. It's also host to a popular international fireworks show. This park continually leaves families with smiles on their faces, and has been doing so since 1967. It's a guaranteed good time!

When you're ready for the wind down, gather the family and buckle in for a 2-hour ride towards the city of Ottawa, but first take a pit stop in the small quaint mountainside town of Rigaurd. Drop in for a quick bite to eat at one of Rigaud's local eateries, or take a breather in the unique “Champs de Patates,” a legendary rock garden that was once said to be a potato field until God caught the farmer breaking the Sabbath and changed all the potatoes to stones.

Continue traveling down TC-O and you'll eventually end up in Canada's capital city, Ottawa. Sitting on the south bank of the Ottawa River, this city is known as Canada’s technological and political center. As for entertainment, this community does not fall short. Ottawa has a myriad of different options for you and your traveling posse. Whether it's visiting The National Gallery of Canada, watching a live show at Ottawa’s Little Theater, walking the streets of The Langevin Block or simply catching a Senators hockey game at the Canadian Tire Center, you are sure to be left fulfilled and enlightened by the enchantment of Quebec, Canada.

Quebec is a world of its own, with history, entertainment, amusement and exploration for everybody that is going to be riding along in your class C RV! The attractions, mountains, rivers and towns surrounding this city will give you hundreds of options for fun and relaxation. Whatever it is that you are looking for, Montreal, QC is sure to deliver.

Guide to driving your rv in montréal.

For those new to the city, the country, or driving an RV, we have put together some tips for a safe and enjoyable journey. A little knowledge about the local road rules, customs, and hazards goes a long way towards a road trip that’s memorable for all the right reasons!

  • First things first: always drive on the right! This is the rule throughout Canada and the USA. If you’re accustomed to driving on the left, we suggest taking some time to acclimatize to the new configuration.
  • Motorhomes come in a range of sizes, from van-sized campers to truck-sized RVs. Be aware of how much space your vehicle is taking up, particularly when in tight urban spaces.
  • In the province of Québec, it’s a legal requirement to drive on winter tires from the start of December to the end of March. If you are planning to visit during that period, check with your motorhome rental supplier that the vehicle will be properly equipped with the correct tires.
  • Road signs in Montréal and the province of Québec will be primarily in French. Most are pictograms that will be easily understood by speakers of other languages. It may pay to know some simple road-related words in French—for example, “arrêt” means “stop” and “sortie” means “exit.”
  • Distances in Canada are listed in kilometres, and speeds in kilometres per hour.
  • Default speed limits in Montréal are 50 kilometres per hour in urban areas and 100 kilometres per hour on highways. Always check signs for variations on these limits.
  • The blood alcohol concentration limit for drivers in Quebec is 0.08%. We recommend abstaining from alcohol before driving your campervan rental Montreal.
  • Remember to unload waste whenever you come across a dump station.

Perhaps the best piece of advice we can give to renters is simply this: pay attention to any orientation provided when you pick up your vehicle! The depot staff will know how to operate your specific RV, so take notes and ask any questions you have.

An RV rental trip in Toronto , Calgary , or Edmonton is a great option.

If you’re sticking closer to Montréal, you are at no risk of being bored. Here are a few destinations you could include on your RV rental journey—add your own inspiration for an unforgettable journey.

Québec City

Visitors love the cobblestone streets and myriad museums, even the marine life of St Lawrence River. Pick up an RV rental in Montreal and take the two to three-hour trip to see this lovely place!

The Laurentians

Called Les Laurentides in French, this natural paradise region is a firm favorite with travelers and locals alike. It’s blessed with gorgeous lake and mountain scenery as well as charming villages. Winter snow sports are on offer here, at the famous Mont Tremblant.

Embark on the riverside drive with your RV rental from Montréal to Ottawa, the nation’s capital. There’s a rich history to be discovered here including the impressive Parliament Hill. The city is a bilingual treasure and should feature on any road trip itinerary.

This charming town less than an hour from Montreal borders the national park by the same name. Within the park, you’ll find a beach to swim at, small craft rentals, and many outdoor recreation activities. In town, you can enjoy artist workshops, boutiques, and the local cheese factory.

Did you know that the Big Apple is just six hours’ drive from Montreal? This puts it within easy reach for a weekend-length trip, along with an array of northeastern US cities. Just check with your rent RV Montréal provider that it’s OK to cross the border, and comply with all customs/immigration rules.

Motorhome rental search

Montreal Airport RV Rentals, Quebec, Canada

Book campervan hire and motorhome rental at montreal airport qc.

If you’re looking to rent a motorhome and explore the beautiful city of Montreal and the surrounding areas, you’ve landed in the right place. Don’t expect pages and pages of unnecessary waffle, we pride ourselves on keeping it simple, taking the common concerns and guesswork out of hiring a campervan, motorhome or Montreal RV rental and bringing it all together.

Before we get underway, Montreal has loads of places to see and things to do that don’t require your motorhome! This means that, on occasion, you need to think of your Montreal RV rental as a means of getting you to the beginning of an experience while stoically waiting for you at the end of it. Sure, you can spend all day driving around, but you won’t be getting the best of what this city has to offer -our top 10 attractions from Montreal at the end of this short piece on hiring a motorhome in Montreal reinforces that.

We’ll start by looking at some local Montreal RV rental companies and briefly examining the self-drive vehicles they have for hire, before suggesting some near-by campgrounds, a section that can surprise first-time motorhome renters -and come as a blessed relief to those who have experienced a motorhome vacation in the past- before landing on the section everyone is here for, the very best things to see and do on your holiday, with the odd scenic drive thrown in for good measure.

Top RV Rental Companies in Montreal, Quebec

We know that the reality of hiring a RV rental in Montreal, or anywhere for that matter, is the part that puts most people off a self-drive holiday, what with all that faff with price comparison, getting the best rates and then there’s the insurance stuff you have to deal with before ‘they’ hand over the keys.

A good motorhome rental company won’t try to oversell insurance or try and squeeze a few more bucks out of you with hidden charges, so how about we recommend two quality motorhome providers that’ll simply do away with any such concerns, so you can focus on the fun part of choosing the perfect campervan, motorhome or RV for you, your friends, family, or whatever combination you’ve in mind. Without any further ado, then…

CanaDream RV Rental, Montreal, Quebec, Canada

If you’re looking to hire a campervan in Canada, CanaDream should be a mandatory option. They have seven locations all over the country and, perhaps more importantly, have earned themselves a reputation as a quality provider of campervans, motorhomes and RV’s for rental.

CanaDream’s Montreal depot is less than 30 miles from Montreal-Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport, a comparatively short taxi ride for peace at mind at the other end, with a good range of vehicles for hire -catering for as little as 2 and as many as 6 of you- waiting for you when you get there.

Deluxe Camper Van

Perfect for two of you, this nifty-looking campervan has everything you need for a stylish self-drive holiday with a surprising level of space and luxury within.

There’s a decent-sized bathroom and kitchen in this motorhome rental with plenty of living space to enjoy after a day on the road.

Class C Motorhome

For four people travelling with two children, CanaDream offer a choice of two Class C Motorhomes, the Midi and Maxi.

Both self-drive options are similar in spec, with the Maxi being slightly longer, but your choice will probably be determined by personal taste rather than dimension semantics.

Montreal RV Rental Depot : CanaDream, 14569 Boulevard Curé-Labelle, Mirabel, QC J7J 1M2, Canada.

Located about 46 km/29 miles from Montreal-Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport (YUL) or 48 km/30 miles from downtown Montreal.

CanaDream Montreal office hours :

  • Pick Up: 1 pm to 4 pm
  • Drop Off: 8 am to 10 am
  • Open all statutory holidays
  • Closed Sunday and all statutory holidays (October to April)

Included with Standard Rate :

  • 24-hour assistance
  • Tourist Info/Maps
  • 0-4 years old

Cruise Canada, Montreal RV Rental

Cruise Canada

AKA Cruise America operating in Canada, Cruise Canada have five rental depots scattered over the country with the Montreal outfit a mere 18 miles from Montreal-Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport.

With 134 locations covering the entire North America region, the tantalising prospect of being able to drive right across the USA is very much within your grasp but, more realistically for those on a self-drive holiday in Canada, the biggest draw will be the motorhomes for hire. In this respect, Cruise Canada have kept it reassuringly simple, while catering for as many as 7 and as little as one.

Specifics aside, Cruise Canada have four Class C motorhomes to choose from, despite their being referred to as ‘RV’s’ -which simply means ’recreational vehicle’.

All of them are pet-friendly and come with freshwater toilets, showers and good kitchens but it’s the range of accommodation, even the choice of motorhome for different terrains that makes Cruise Canada such an attractive motorhome rental option.

For example, the two-berth Truck Camper has 4×4 drive for the toughest roads, and Cruise Canada have options for 3, 5, even 7 self-drive holidaymakers, so you can hire a motorhome to your exacting needs.

Montreal RV Rental depot: Cruise Canada, 198 Boulevard Cure LaBelle, Sainte-Rose, Quebec, H7L3A1.

Located about 29 km/18 miles from Montreal-Pierre Elliott Trudeau International Airport (YUL) or 30 km/19 miles from downtown Montreal.

Cruise Canada Montreal hours :

  • Pick Up: 1pm to 4pm
  • Drop off: 9 am to 11 am
  • Closed Sundays and Public Holidays

Top 10 Attractions from Montreal

Before you gallivant off in your motorhome rental from Montreal , don’t forget to check out Montreal itself. We’ve popped a couple of highlights on the list below to give you a flavour of the city, but it’s worth discovering some of the better-known spots yourself to get a more rounded picture of what this dynamic Canadian city has to offer.

Perhaps park up your motorhome in one of our recommended RV parks and get stuck into some of the less touristy attractions, or just see where the road, or sidewalk, takes you.

Îles-de-Boucherville National Park

Treat yourselves to the all-year-round beauty of Îles-de-Boucherville National Park a few kilometres from Montreal. Cycle, ski or canoe for those looking to let off a bit of steam, but a simple stroll in this beautiful region is just as good.

Molson campsite accepts all types of RV’s up to 12 meters and has water and electricity connections. There is a washroom about 500 metres away, with an onsite picnic table and fireplace. Pets are allowed.

Mont Tremblant National Park

The 100 km or so scenic drive from Montreal to Mont Tremblant National Park is a good way for the Canadian motorhome renter to cut their teeth in the region. Once there, you’ve lakes and peaks to enjoy in Quebec’s first National Park at almost 125 years old.

There are a number of camping sites in Mont Tremblant National Park, mostly accepting tents and trailer tents. But others accept camping vans, small RV rentals up to large RV’s depending on the campground. Powered sites with electricity and water are available.

Canada’s must-see Capital City of Ottawa has more to do than we’ve space for here. On the way there, take advantage of the old Highway 148 (not the more obvious Highway 50) and enjoy a memorable scenic drive that takes in the Fairmont Château Montebello and the Papineau manor historic monument.

However some highlights include a visit to Parliament Hill, home to the Canadian Parliament, take a stroll through Byward Market, one of Canada’s oldest markets; and learn about Canada’s history in one of the many museums in Ottawa, including the Canadian War Museum, Canadian Museum of History, National Gallery of Canada and the Canadian Museum of Natural History.

Quebec City

The capital of Quebec with its fortified colonial core and historic buildings provide another excuse to leave the motorhome rental somewhere safe and explore Quebec City on foot.

The Petit Champlain district is packed full of bars and restaurants too, so make the very most of it!

Laurentian Mountains

How about a twisty, two-lane scenic drive that snakes west from Montreal and takes in the forests and lakes of the Laurentian Mountains . Sure, you can stop, walk or cycle, but you’re on a self-drive holiday so hit highway 15 and join it to highway 50 for guilt-free fun.

Fjord-du-Saguenay National Park

All-year-round, outdoor fun at Fjord-du-Saguenay National Park , like backcountry skiing and brisk hikes in the winter or wildlife watching and cycling in the summer, for example. One of the best things about hiring a motorhome is that you can work around any activity that suits you or the crew.

There are a couple of campgrounds that accept RV rental in Fjord-du-Saguenay National Park, which come complete with powered electric sites with water hook-ups. Washroom facilities, picnic table and bBQ facilities are available. Depending on the campground, maximum RV lengths are limited to up to 9 meters, or a maximum of 12 meters with the larger campsites.

Mount Royal

The English translation of ‘Montreal’ is, literally ‘ Mount Royal ’ named after the large hill (or ‘the mountain’ as it’s known to locals) that occupies the city.

Mount Royal is an all-year-round hive of activities and fun, with walking and cycling paths in summer; with snow tubing, skiing and snowshoeing in winter but you’ll have to leave your motorhome rental or campervan hire behind as it’s only accessible by Olmstead Path.

Old Montreal

Head into the historic, 17th-century district of the old quarter and there isn’t much need to follow the narrow, cobbled streets of Old Montreal , loaded with bistros and bars galore, any other way but by foot -the poor old motorhome rental isn’t getting much of a look-in in Montreal!

Sucrerie de la Montagne

West of Montreal, right at the top of Mont Rigaud, in the middle of a 120-acre forest populated by mature maple trees, is Sucrerie de la Montagne . This ancient sugar shack cum restaurant is on hand to provide visitors with a delicious glimpse into the past.

Cap-Saint-Jacques Nature Park

Last but by no means least, a scenic drive that only the locals know about. Once you’re finished exploring the beautiful Cap-Saint-Jacques Nature Park , Montreal’s largest park at 330 hectares, drive through Chemin Senneville and check out the beautiful houses on your own, private, road trip. Just don’t tell anyone.

Popular for swimming, boating, hiking and bird watching during summer. In winter you can explore the miles of cross-country skiing trails or snowshoeing trails.

Campervan drive around Quebec region

Once settled in, leave the comforts of your Montreal Airport RV rentals for recreational activities like swimming, golfing, hiking and soccer. There are playgrounds and games room for the kids as well as walking trails where you can enjoy a walk with your pets. After a day of activities here, you will surely go back to your hired motorhome and sleep like a baby.

Visiting Montreal is like going to a fantasy world filled with picturesque landscapes and charming towns. There are many places to visit in the province of Quebec. Having your own campervan rental, motorhome hire or recreational vehicle (RV) rental on your self-drive camping vacation frees you up to explore; without having to book accommodation. For only less than an hour’s drive by campervan rental; the Laurentians Mountains welcome you for the number 1 ski resort in Eastern North America.

Other places to visit are Sherbrooke, Ulverton, Wabanaki Reserve, Trois-Riviéres and Drummondville for a taste of the countryside, all must-visits when on a road trip in your campervan hire or motorhome rental. There are a few things you need to know about hiring an RV in Montreal: Insurance is important! When you hire a campervan, you will be liable for any damage that it incurs. Paying for extra insurance is always a good idea when renting a vehicle so that your rental experience is as stress-free as possible. Incidents happen and people get into accidents all the time, so consider getting some extra peace of mind by paying for insurance.

Depending on the company you rent from and the type of vehicle you rent, your gas prices may be included in your rental price, or they may not. It’s important to double check with the rental company so that you can budget accordingly. Check out discounts! Many companies offer discounts if you’re a student or if you book your rental in advance. If you have some flexibility, it never hurts to compare rates and look for the best deals!

Plan out your route before setting off on your adventure. Not only will this help save time, but it can also help save money on gas since you won’t be making any unnecessary detours. Read reviews! Before booking with any rental company, make sure to do your research and read reviews from past customers. This will give you a good idea of what to expect and help ensure that you have a positive experience.

Have fun! This is probably the most important thing to remember when renting an RV in Montreal or anywhere else for that matter! Make sure to relax and enjoy yourself while exploring all that this amazing city has to offer.

Montreal – The Best Things to See & Do

Montreal is the largest French-speaking city not only in Canada but in the world. Its historic centre is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and its Old Port is a designated National Historic Site of Canada.

The city has a long and intriguing history that dates back to the early 1600s, when it was first established as New France by French explorer Samuel de Champlain. The city rapidly grew into an important settlement for fur trading and other commercial activities over the next century or so.

In 1760, during the Seven Years’ War between France and England, Montreal was captured by British troops. It remained under British control until 1867, when it became one of the founding provinces of the new Canadian Confederation. Since then, Montreal has continued to grow and prosper, becoming one of North America’s most vibrant and exciting cities. Here are some of the best things to see and do on your visit to Montreal:

1. Explore Old Montreal – Old Montreal is the city’s historic centre, with many buildings dating back to the 17th and 18th centuries. The area is very picturesque, with narrow streets lined with stone buildings and horse-drawn carriages. There are also many museums, art galleries, and other cultural attractions in Old Montreal.

2. Visit Notre Dame Basilica – Notre Dame Basilica is a stunning Gothic Revival church in Old Montreal that dates back to 1829. The interior of the church is decorated with beautiful stained-glass windows and intricate wood carvings. Visitors can also climb to the top of one of the towers for panoramic views of the city.

3. See Biodome de Montreal – The Biodome de Montreal is a unique museum that features four different ecosystems from around the world, including the Amazon rainforest, the Saint Lawrence Marine ecosystem, the Sub-Antarctic Islands, and the Laurentian Maple Forest. Visitors can walk through each ecosystem and learn about the plants and animals that live there.

4. Stroll through Mount Royal Park – Mount Royal Park is a large urban park that offers sweeping views of downtown Montreal and beyond. The park is home to many hiking trails, picnic areas, tennis courts, and more. In winter, visitors can go sledding or even cross-country skiing in the park.

5. Visit the Pointe-a-Calliere Museum – The Pointe-a-Calliere Museum is located in Old Port and is devoted to the history of Montreal. The museum features interactive exhibits as well as archaeological remains from the city’s earliest days. Visitors can also take a boat tour of Old Port or take a guided walking tour of Old Montreal led by a costumed guide.

The best time to rent an RV in Montreal depends on your preferences and travel plans. Generally, the peak season for RV rentals in Montreal and across Canada is during the summer months, particularly from June to August. During this time, you can enjoy warmer weather, longer daylight hours, and a wide range of outdoor activities and events. However, if you prefer to avoid crowds and higher rental prices, you might consider renting during the shoulder seasons of spring (April to May) or fall (September to October). During these times, you can still experience pleasant weather, beautiful foliage in the fall, and fewer tourists at popular destinations.

Yes, it’s possible to pick up an RV or motorhome in Montreal and return it to a different city in Canada, but this option is typically subject to the policies and availability of the rental company. Many rental companies do provide one-way rental services, enabling customers to collect the vehicle in one spot and drop it off elsewhere. However, it’s important to note that there might be extra charges associated with one-way rentals, as the rental company needs to cover the expenses of returning the vehicle to its initial location.

Can l park rv or motorhome at Walmart in Montreal?
