'85-'94 Ski-doo Safaris

I was just wondering about the Ski-Doo Safaris. I wanted to know if they are good motor, good gas mileage, good performance, and basically maintenance-free. I was wondering what the a good price would be for an '85-'94 safari. It dosnt matter what model of safari it is, as long as the 377 motor has twin carbs. Thats a must. If someone could tell me what year and model of safaris had the twin carbs and what the top speed would be of this sled it would be great. SWRules  

Safaris can be had here around Barrie, Ontario for about $500. bucks or less. I'm talking about the 377's that are single carb, I'm not sure if the the 477's had twins or not but they are pretty much not worth anything around here unless you ice fish. Leaf springs and ziltch for suspension are there biggest downfall. I have a 85 safari right now that I have had since new and this sled had never let me down during the years I did ride it and I rode the snot out of it. It will go forever on a tank of gas, the only thing it cost me was a new starter rope and thats it. I do know the Citation SS had the same motor pretty much with the twin carbs and were a hoot in there time but these sleds are really outdated.

We sold our 93 377 Safari Deluxe this year. It was a twin carb and never let us down. It would run 80-85 flat out on a hard surface. It was a good beginner sled for my son who was 12 when we picked it up. It sold for 2000 with 3800 km on it and barely a scratch. It was always serviced and it showed. It rode good and handled OK on good trails. It wasn't much at off trail riding. It was very easy on gas. For a beginer sled or to tool around the farm it is great. For aggressive trail riding, no way. Mind you that big windshield kept you as warm as could be.

what year was yours BARRIEMACHZ?  

My uncle has an 88 377 and the only thing he has had to change in almost 15 years now is a track. the sled still starts on first pull everytime. it is still fast enough to keep up with alot of the new sleds. he still loves it. it has about 25,000 k on it . he dosen't do any road riding or he dosen't ride in low snow conditions. guess that is why he has never changed Hi-Fax.

Fuzzy: Does it have 2 carbs? Electric Start, hand/thumb warmers? Speedo? Tach? How fast has he had it going? Ok thanks.  

FREEZERBURNT: How was the Scout E on gas? What colour was it? Good performance??  

Yellow but mine was painted black by previous owner :hallo1: Some Safaries are black,some are yellow and some are burgundy Its a 377 so it runs great for a 377 it will do 100kmph They are good on gas  

One carb has a spedo no tach ,electric start or any other options like that.. track is a 118 or a 121 X 16 1/2 " don't know what spped he has had it at. it was a fast skidoo in it's day. the same cc cats and poos couldn't look at in speed or deep snow. he is thinking about getting a Gade next year so his son can use the 377. forgot to mention gas milage was excelent. before I got my sks I had a tundra and I would bunr two tanks of gas to his one. he gets about 15-17 MPG Click to expand...

How much would it cost for someone to put a second carb on say a '89 Safari 377?  

Would it increase the power much? faster accelaration and top speed?  

Got a 89 safari cheyenne 503 Long track, just did the first rebuild after 20000 km. A part from the susp which is a real POS, it is a great work sled ,not for trails though. Top speed was 95 kph.

Regarding 1987 Ski-doo Safari 377, non electric start. I purchased a voltage regulator listed to fit the above sled. It only has one wire (yellow) to hook up. The wiring diagram shows the voltage regulator having a two wire hook-up, one black wire hooking up to a "yellow / black" wire in the harness, and the other, Yellow, hooking up to yellow. Assuming the "regulator black" to "harness yellow/black" was a ground circuit, I hooked up the new regulator yellow wire to the yellow in the harness, hooked nothing up to the harness yellow/black, but ran a ground wire to the new regulator mounting pad, then to the engine. Long story short, I fired it up, lights very bright, revved it up, and burnt out the high beam. It does not appear the new voltage regulator is working. Will the new universal "one wire" voltage regulator work, and if so, how do I wire it up? Thanks, Tom

1984 safari 377 ..No lights or switches

So got the safari running but now I have no lights or switches... Please help  

Check the main connector at the engine and look for unplugged,corroded,burned terminals.Look more carefully for YL and YL/BK ones.

I checked my wires and had to plug in the yl/blk wire but still nothing..  

So check continuity in the wires from main block to switch . Check too connector at regulator and if the ground is good..

you really have to check ground the YL/BK is your main ground that goes to regulator take the regulator off clean the metal and the surface of the frame to make sure your getting a good ground when putting the regulator back on  

This sounds real stupid but I don't think it has a voltage regulator and if it does I domt know where it is.. I've looked online of what it looks like n can't find it.. Also mine is not electric start does that make a difference.. No battery either

the YL/BK wire coming from stator follow it and it goes right to the regulator if the wire goes under engine then it's under engine if it's not then the regulator should be right in front of gas tank below steering shaft even if it's electric start the YL/BK wire will direct you to regulator/rectifier  

Thanks man I'll look tomorrow .. Is it a 3 prong plug? bcuz right next to the air filter is a plug that doesn't have anything to plug in..  

1. if your sled is a manual start it should only have a one prong plug for YL wire the black just grounds with the bolt that holds the regulator to the sled if your sled is electric start or should be electric it will have a three prong plug YL, YL/BK, RD/BL wires the black will also ground to the bolt that holds the regulator/rectifier to sled 2. other than head lamp and tail light what other accessories do you have? 3. A manual start ignition switch is different from electric start ignition switch so you have to determine what your sled really is  

the yl/blk goes to a 3 prong plug that isn't connected to anything .. So I think I need one..  

it has tether, kill switch , ignition .. n u already know it has headlamp n tail..  

I have to came to a conclusion my voltage regulator is missing.. So i just ordered a new one n it will be here in a few days... Also did my homework and found out its the safari 377 which is manual start and not electric,, but still need the voltage regulator.. I hope this fixes the problem..

Got the new regulator and that is not the problem ... Still no switches or lights..... i guess ill buy a spotlight n then come spring time re-wire everything... Knowing my luck if i do the wires now i wont be able to ride anymore......, any more ideas  

test to see if you have power coming out of the wires to accessories you might of blown the elements in the bulbs with out regulator if not your going to have to start from the beginning with a wiring diagram it's not hard  

Bulbs are newly replaced.. but I'll test the wires tomorrow  

What should my readings be coming out of the wires??

This is a brand new, top quality voltage AC regulator for your 1987 or 1988 Ski-Doo Safari 377. This unit has a higher output capacity than the original part. This top of the line voltage regulator will meet or exceed factory specifications. Installation is fast and easy as it goes to and is around the headlight.

Domestic Shipping :  Addresses that receive  both postal and carrier mail are best. USPS Priority mail ( postal) is used most of the time, but some orders require carrier delivery ( UPS, FedEx)   

International Shipping :  Addresses that receive both postal and carrier mail are best. USPS Priority mail ( postal) is used most of the time, but some orders require carrier delivery ( UPS, FedEx)   International orders will generally be shipped via USPS Priority Mail. If you have other shipping carrier concerns, please ask  prior  to ordering. It is recommended to keep an eye on the international tracking number because it is possible some taxes will apply that the buyer will be responsible for paying prior to delivery. If the shipment is not delivered for any reason and is returned by any mail postal system or mail carrier,  then the shipping payment is non-refundable without exception, regardless of the reason. Your purchase is agreeance of this policy. Shipping carriers do not issue refunds for this condition. 

Special Rate $45  If the shipping rate is showing $45 for one ignition unit, then please provide a physical address (Generally UPS) for those products. 

Exchanges : If you have ordered the incorrect part and have not installed it, we will gladly exchange it for the correct part provided we offer it. 

CDI Units : There are  NO  returns for refund on CDI Units. The rationale is not relevant and disregarded. . This return policy guards against issues caused by misdiagnosis, any change of mind about repairing the vehicle (e.g. selling the vehicle), purchases made for non-disclosed deadlines, and replacing with a used or less expensive unit from another retailer for further troubleshooting.  If you suspect an issue with a CDI, you will need to contact us at that point, and it can be sent in for testing .  There are testing deadlines once or twice a month. Inbound shipping is never covered, and upfront replacements will not be sent . If you purchase a duplicate part elsewhere for further troubleshooting, then there will still be no refund on the originally purchased part. The reason behind this is that often there are precautions that need to be taken before installation of new ignition cdi ( They are temperamental by nature and can be damaged if the proper precautions are not taken beforehand e,g. bad ignition coil or regulator rectifier.  Often, we can provide troubleshooting suggestions. There are  many  non-refundable costs behind each order and in many cases the Ignition units ( CDI) are built just for the order. Ignition units  ( CDIs are also electrosensitive parts, which can be damaged during use. Often a document will be included with the new part to help you out. Provided the ignition unit ( CDI)  has not been abused or altered(modified, this includes its connections ) we can exchange only it, but NO returns for refund.  Your purchase is an agreement to this policy.  There are testing deadlines once or twice a month. Inbound shipping is never covered, and upfront replacements will not be sent. Digital Ignition units require a resistor cap 5k resistor spark cap, or spark plug. Digital units use a microcontroller that can get interference from other electrical frequencies on the application. With Digital Ignition units ( CDI Units) The Difference in behavior between new and old ignition units is not significant when there is an external fault.   

CDI Unit Unit Repair Servic e: ( CDI/ECU Unit Repairs) When these parts are shipped back to the customer. They are only insured for the amount we bill for the repair itself. If the unit does test good and not repaired. It is only insured for the test fee. There are service deadlines, please send an email for the next service deadline date. 

Ignition System kits : Generally, these take four business days to build. These system kits are offered ignition only and ignition plus a lighting lead. These are custom and built to order so there are no returns for refund on them. Generally, these are recommended for mechanically incline individuals. Timing is to be set through the TDC method. These are not prototype kits. Most have been in production for more than ten years. In the rare case that there is a fitment issue with the stator or flywheel rotor, then we can exchange the component provided there has been no physical damage or alteration. Exchange shipping fees may or may not apply. Inbound shipping is not covered, regardless of the reason. The 1-year exchange warranty on these components only covers internal failure. Any physical damage to any components is not covered by the warranty. All the parts in the kits are available independently as well. Some system kits do require some modification or adaptation. 

Returns & Refunds : General Returns are handled on a case-by-case basis, and are only eligible within 14 days of the original purchase date.  No returns on installed parts. Eligible returns are subject to a 25% restocking fee of the subtotal which covers previous carrying costs and payment processing fees. After this period, please do not ask for a return.  Original shipping is always non-refundable and inbound shipping in never covered. Installed Parts, All CDI units, All System kits. and Rebuilt Parts (select rotors & select stators), and are non-returnable. Very few of the products on the site are OEM.  OEM electrical parts do not carry any manufacturer warranty and are not returnable. Generally have the oem stamp mark on them. If you are unsure which parts are OEM, please ask. Returns are never allowed based on the fact that they did not arrive at a destination by a predefined deadline nor warranty related,  This return policy guards against issues caused by misdiagnosis, any change of mind about repairing the vehicle ( e.g selling the vehicle), purchases made for non-disclosed deadlines, and replacing with a used or less expensive unit from another retailer for further trouble-shooting. . Returns are not allowed on any products that have been used or physically look like they have been installed. Order Cancellation:   It is often, that your order can not be canceled as the automated process flow moves along quickly. There are payment processing, acquisition, transaction fees, and postage that are paid which are not refundable to us or nor the customer.  If you decide to cancel your order after it is placed, then there will be a 10% deduction from the refund credit. The average time credit cards take to reflect refunds is 7 business days. If we have to cancel your order, then this condition would not apply. It is possible that a multi-order may ship without a particular part. Order cancellations of built to order Ignition unit ( CDI) or system ignition kit will be subject to the cancelation refund deduction. 

Warranties : Most parts are warranted (OEM parts excepted), Please ask if you have any uncertainty. Warranty terms are 12 months from the date of purchase. i just got a sled for free its my first sled and well lets just say it needs a little work its quite past its prime well i need a hood a recoil and a rope and also a pipe i also need a little bit of info on this thing, and i am pretty sure its a safari 377 not sure the year though any help would be appreciated  

I may have all the parts you need, it depends on what year yours is. can you post a pic of it? or look on the tunnel for an ID tag with a manufacture date.

Owch.... thats in pretty rough shape. Nothing that a bit of hard work and time cant fix. Judging by the looks Id say thats a 87 or a 88. Check the tag on the tunnel to know for certain.  

theres no tag on it, i put some bolt on the recoil and tried using the electric start but it dont work, theres wires cut all over i tried wrapping a rope around the clutch and starting it but nothing, this is my first sled so i am goin to need some help with this any tips on this  

well i put a little bit of gas down the cylanders its got spark but it still aint firing i took off the head and the cylander walls are fine the pistons are a little pitted on top but not bad im in the process of cleaning the carb right now any ideas why it aint running

Clean carbs,Check floats and jets. Replace plugs and lines. Make sure it has over 100psi in both cylinders and that there compression is pretty much the same. And replace plugs.
