What Is The Porsche Weissach Package?

The Porsche 918 Spyder’s lap around the storied Nurburgring course created history. Only a professional driver and the Weissach Package were used, and the time it engraved was astounding—6 minutes and 57 seconds. It raised the standard for the next McLaren P1 and Ferrari LaFerrari while setting a new record for street-legal automobiles. Fortunately for all of us car enthusiasts, the 918 Spyder is now offered to the general public with the Weissach Package. The 918 is Porsche’s Frankenstein monster. It was the first of the “big three” hybrid supercars to hit the market, and its technological advancements quickly won over the world. A 4.6-liter V8 engine and two electric motors work together to produce 887 horsepower. With this power, the hybrid can accelerate from 0 to 60 miles per hour in only 2.5 seconds and from 0 to 100 miles per hour in just 4.9.

A racecar that might convince onlookers it was constructed from nine different machines and a bolt of lightning is the result of the combination of physical strength and electrical power. The 918 dominates every curve and rockets down the straightaways, making even the most difficult racetracks in the world seem simple enough for an unskilled driver to handle. However, you could find it difficult to comprehend the supercar. How was it possible to make a hybrid supercar accelerate more quickly than a conventional supercar? The answer lies in the motors. A 129-horsepower electric motor is installed comfortably on the front axle, and a 156-horsepower electric motor is mounted on the rear axle. This provides the driver with flawless acceleration control and perfectly distributed power to all four wheels. In simple terms, even when the V8 engine is idled low, you will never lose power. The 918 is projected around every turn gently thanks to the energy being directed straight to the wheels. The V8 engine is a different matter. Porsche developed a beast that could maintain high revs like an F1 racing without violating regulations for street-legality.

Low on the chassis for a precise center of gravity, the 300-pound high-revving engine weighs little and is mounted light. With no money spared for performance, dry-sump lubrication using a separate oil tank, aluminum pumps, and titanium connecting rods results in an even lighter ride. The hybrid’s cabin is uncluttered and perfectly crafted to retain your focus on the present. The 918 cabin delivers exceptional excellence in every aspect. A seven-inch display in the center console, a multifunction steering wheel, and a Porsche app for your smartphone that tracks data crucial to your next drive, such as the battery charge, are all provided for the driver. The world was unable to imagine Porsche having anything more to offer after bringing so much to the table. At that time, it was announced that the 918 Spyder would be offered with the Weissach Package, giving customers access to the famed Nurburgring track performance. A weight-saving component called the Weissach Package reduces the supercar’s overall weight by 90 pounds, bringing it down to 3,602 pounds. This makes it faster than the Ferrari LaFerrari by 0.1 seconds from 0 to 60 mph. Although the highest speed is still electronically limited at 214 mph, that’s acceptable because this monster was created to tackle the loops and curves of a track rather than to travel in a straight line. Without a doubt, the 918 Spyder with the Weissach Package is the most innovative vehicle to ever leave Germany.

The Weissach Package Lightens Up Your Bank Account and the 2019 Porsche 911 GT3 RS

The first-ever Weissach package option for the 911 GT3 RS will make the already-light sports vehicle even lighter while also making your cash lighter. This high-performance treatment has previously been offered on other Porsches. Over and beyond the $188,550 basic price of the 520-hp GT3 RS, the option will cost $18,000. For the ultra-cool magnesium wheels seen only on Weissach package cars, add additional $13,000 if you want the lightest possible combination of features.

The combined additions reducing the 911 GT3 RS’s curb weight by 38 pounds will undoubtedly excite Porsche-obsessed car enthusiasts who have a grudge against unnecessary weight. Porsche claims that the new GT3 RS weighs only 3153 pounds with both options. Additionally, the cost of each mass redactor is uneven: While the Weissach kit’s plethora of carbon-fiber parts save weight by roughly 13 pounds but cost $5K extra, the magnesium rims save 25 pounds.

In addition to not having to make sense (if you don’t get it, don’t spend $220,000 on one), those costs are also reasonable when compared to other Porsche alternatives. Even a basic Macan crossover or the 718 Boxster roadster can easily have its sticker price increase by more over $30,000. And unlike color-coordinated key fobs or leather-lined air vents, the Weissach package’s modifications ought to enhance the GT3 RS’s already lofty performance promise.

For instance, the Weissach version swaps out the normal GT3 RS’s gorgeous, lightweight magnesium roof panel for an even nicer, 1.1-pound lighter carbon-fiber panel. It is important to note that by removing that weight from the car’s tallest portion, the center of gravity should be slightly lowered. The carbon-fiber hood and wing are left unpainted, as well as the carbon roof (which are of the same material but painted on the non-Weissach RS).

Porsche’s quest for pounds even led them to swap the shift paddles and some steering-wheel trim for carbon fiber, as well as replace the anti-roll bars and the connecting hardware with carbon fiber components (saving 11.9 pounds) (saving 0.5 pound). Wondering how to distinguish a Weissach GT3 RS from, say, a 911 GT2 RS with two turbochargers and 700 horsepower? Easy. Simply look for the exposed carbon fiber parts, the enormous PORSCHE branding on the wing, and the Weissach badging on the headrests and the dashboard above the glove box. Oh, and keep an ear out for the flat-six with a 9000 rpm natural aspiration.

OpenWeb was used to import this content. At their website, you might be able to discover the same material in a different format or more details.

Specifications

To continue their improvements for the 911’s 991 generation, Porsche unveiled a facelifted GT3 RS variant in February 2018. (991.2). A new engine with a 9,000 rpm redline, 20 horsepower, and 7.4 lb-ft more torque than the preceding GT3 RS, similar to the GT3 and RSR versions, is one of the modifications. The GT3 RS features ball joints on all suspension components, front helper springs, lightweight glass for the back and rear-side windows, a newly developed tire compound, updated front fascia (similar to the 991.2 GT3), side skirts, and a rear wing (similar to the GT2 RS) for greater downforce. This car can be ordered with a Weissach package that adds more carbon fiber body and interior components, magnesium wheels, and firmer suspension settings.

The 991.2 GT3 RS recorded a lap time of 6:56.4 on April 18, 2018 at the iconic Nurburgring Nordscheleife race track. Porsche did not anticipate the car to lap the ‘Ring that rapidly; they expected a 10-15 second lap increase over the 991.1 RS. The first Porsche production vehicle to do so was the 918 Spyder, and this is the third to do so.

The initial shipment of Weissach GT3RS vehicles had stock GT3RS hoods because of a manufacture delay. To minimize weight, the Weissach package has a hood made entirely of carbon fiber. November of this year is when ours is scheduled to arrive. The Weissach package lightens the car’s overall weight by 18 kg.

Did you realize? In its normal configuration, the 911 GT3 RS produces 750 lbs of downforce at 193 mph, but when the rear wing is set to full attack, both downforce and top speed are raised to 992 lbs at 211 mph.

The 911 GT3 RS Is Powered to the Max by the Weissach Package

Do you know how to recognize a Weissach Package vehicle? Examine the hood. Although the Weissach Pack cars receive a clear gloss finish, every GT3 RS has a carbon fiber bonnet.

The optional magnesium wheels offer significant performance advantages in addition to their stylish appeal. This is due to the fact that they are substantially lighter than the usual alloys on the RS, which helped to reduce the spinning mass by 25 pounds. If you check the box for the $18,000 Weissach Package, it’s yours for $13,000.

The Porsche GT3 RS weights 3153 pounds with the Weissach Package and magnesium wheels installed. That’s because the roof, sway bars, and end links are made of carbon fiber.

For this vehicle, Porsche reintroduced the “GT3 RS” door script. We like it, but if you don’t, you may have it taken out.

Porsche Motorsport may have reinstated the manual transmission for the GT3, but all of its “RS” vehicles will only be PDK-equipped. Porsche believes that PDK makes more sense since these cars are intended for track-day enthusiasts. It’s a fantastic gearbox in any case.

Carbon fiber is also included in the Weissach Package for the shift paddles and steering wheel trim.

This pack bears the name of Porsche’s illustrious test track, whose map can be seen on the badge. The headrests also include same design sewn there.

The GT3 RS is powered by a 4.0-liter flat-six engine that produces 520 horsepower, but you can’t see it here. It is the most potent 911 manufactured with a naturally aspirated engine. Additionally, it has a fantastic 9000 rpm top speed.

The Weissach Package adds a titanium roll cage to GT3 RS models sold in Europe. Because of US regulations, we won’t get it here.

If you want a GT3 RS with these wheels, you’ll have to wait until later this year. Porsche grossly miscalculated the demand for the Weissach Package on the GT2 RS, and BBS is having trouble keeping up with demand.

The preceding GT3 RS used this fender vent for the first time. It aids in lowering wheel arch pressure, preventing front-end lift.

Instead of the lighter carbon-ceramic brakes that are available as an option, this GT3 RS comes standard with steel brakes. Although carbon brakes reduce unsprung mass, some track junkies prefer the more affordable replacement prices of traditional brakes.

The Porsche 918 Weissach package is what?

Porsche offers a weight-saving and aerodynamics package for the 918 Spyder called the Weissach Package. In the US, the factory option cost $84,000. Magnesium wheels, an enlarged rear diffuser, and Alcantara-covered interior components were all included in the package. Carbon fiber was also used to create the windscreen structure, roof, rear wings, and rearview mirrors. The Weissachs were a wise purchase.

What does Porsche mean by Weissach?

Porsche’s think tank is called Weissach. Since 1971, here, with direct routes between the various specialized departments, cars have been created, tested, and prepared for series production from the very first sketch to the finished prototype. The Weissach Development Center handles every facet, including design and concept development, modelmaking and early prototypes, testing of aerodynamics, acoustics, and electronics, development of drive systems, steering, and chassis systems, as well as safety analyses and testing. It houses the Porsche motorsport division and has its own test track. Here, Porsche mixes old-world craftsmanship with cutting-edge technology. 80 percent of the 6,500 workers that currently work here are employed in development.

Porsche Museum celebrates 50th anniversary of the Weissach development centre with a special exhibition.

Special Exhibition Porsche Weissach

Every Porsche model comes from the same birthplace: the Weissach Development Centre . The area, which covers around 100 hectares, is synonymous with cutting-edge technology as well as passion, engineering skill and innovation. On the occasion of the anniversary, you can visit the special exhibition “50 Years of Porsche Development at Weissach ” in the Porsche Museum from 10 August to 5 December. The Development Centre, which started operations in 1971, includes the areas of design, motorsport, various test rigs and the in-house test track.

Special Exhibition Porsche Weissach

These will be highlighted in detail in the special exhibition. “Sports cars for the road and thoroughbred race cars have been developed in Weissach for half a century. Dreams are designed, created and tested in the middle of idyllic countryside,” says Achim Stejskal, Head of Porsche Heritage and Museum.

A look behind the scenes

The museum in Zuffenhausen is taking a look behind the scenes of the birthplace of all Porsche sports cars as part of the special exhibition. The exhibition is centred around a highlight exhibit where visitors can digitally experience various topics using Augmented Reality (AR) applications. Among other things, they can look back on the site development over the past five decades. The company owes the decisive tip for the later premises of the Development Centre to its then employee and racing driver Herbert Linge .

The first steps cover the history of the Development Centre and the ground-breaking ceremony in 1961.

In January 1960, he drew Porsche’s attention to the overgrown piece of ground in Weissach and Flacht, which appeared to be of no value for agriculture. The ground-breaking ceremony then took place one and a half years later. In 1962, a test track was put into operation there, and nine years later the Research and Development Centre was opened.

Special exhibition divided into 5 areas

In order to honour the highly developed departments of the Weissach Development Centre, the special exhibition is divided into the following areas: First Steps, Test Rig/Wind Tunnel, Porsche Engineering, Design, Motorsport and Centre. The first steps cover the history of the Development Centre and the ground-breaking ceremony in 1961. Afterwards, young and old visitors pass by selected models, such as a bus from the Weissach works fire brigade from 1972.

At the test stand station, visitors gain an insight into everything that employees do at test rigs.

The test rig area starts with the wind tunnel and a Taycan AR app. At this station, guests also gain an insight into all the things that employees do at test rigs: from testing and developing keys through to vehicle safety, cold chambers and testing and development of innovative materials. Design, Porsche Engineering and the Motorsport detail area await with fascinating stories, vehicles and innovations for all those interested.

Using iPads and AR software, visitors can get to know the model of the Weissach site positioned at the center of the special exhibition.

At the centre, visitors can get to know the prominently positioned Weissach model via iPads and AR software. Analogue interactions are also possible throughout the special exhibition. For example, there are shelves with exhibits, models and 3D printed items, as well as mechanical flaps behind which there is exciting information about the Development Centre. A few days before the start of the special exhibition, the summer holiday programme for children will start as part of Porsche 4Kids. Here, girls and boys can go on a journey of discovery and look behind the otherwise closed doors of the Development Centre.

The Fastest 0-60 MPH Time For A Muscle Car In The '60s

Here's what the 1970 buick gsx is worth today, the highest torque in a big block v8 muscle car produced in the '60s.

While any true car lover will easily point out any one of the models of the storied Porsche marque, few will ever have heard of the company’s development center. Situated in rural Weissach, this facility has seen the creation of many of Porsche’s most successful road and race cars – from the first Porsche 901s to the multiple championship-winning hybrid 919 WEC racers.

Only about 15 miles from Porsche’s head office in Zuffenhausen, the facility spans nearly 250 acres, and with 6,700 people working there, the Weissach Development Center has just celebrated the 50th anniversary of its establishment in October 1971 – although construction of the handling track began 10 years earlier, in 1961.

So, while the center was originally established to further the company’s motorsport ambitions, the fact that road and racing are so intertwined in Porsche’s corporate genes has seen the facility grow to satisfy both road- and race-car development. And more recently this has expanded to cover the full spectrum of mobility.

Important Moments In The History Of Porsche’s Weissach Development Centre

The story of the Weissach Development Centre dates back to 1959, when – prompted by a noticeable increase in traffic density around Stuttgart, that hampered road-testing - Ferry Porsche began thinking about creating his own test track. Even though Porsche could always use Volkswagen’s vast Ehra-Lessien proving ground, the 550km drive north made it impractical.

Thus, he dispatched his cousin Ghislaine Kaes, and Porsche financial director Hans Kerns, to find a suitable site nearer home. Eventually, the pair found a parcel of land situated between the villages of Mönsheim, Flacht and Weissach, which Porsche purchased in December 1960.

On 16 October 1961, construction of the first section of the facility, a skidpad originally sketched by then-test engineer Helmuth Bott, got underway. The layout offered three tracks with inner radii of 40, 60 and 190 meters, that together with a few huts, formed the foundation of what would become Porsche’s mighty R&D center.

In 1967, work started on a 1.8-mile track around the perimeter of the site. It had a three-quarter-mile straight along its western edge and all the turns were lightly banked, except one, a difficult off-camber corner known as the ‘Bott chicane’.

It was only in 1969 however, that Porsche’s Weissach facility really took shape under the guidance of technical and motorsport director, Ferdinand Piëch. Fashioned after GM/Opel’s recently opened proving ground at Dudenhofen, Porsche’s R&D and design studio were also incorporated into the Weissach site in 1971 .

At the same time the complex gained an inner circuit of 1.6 miles which, by cutting many of the corners of Bott’s original track, provided a second, faster circuit layout.

And as company profits rose, so too did the center’s budget. Weissach’s landmark hexagonal building was completed in 1974 and as 1980s windfall profits rolled in Porsche embarked on a program of expanding the facilities and equipment: A new engine test cell with 35 electric dynamometers was commissioned; a dedicated crash center was designed, and in May 1986, Porsche opened what was then the most modern wind tunnel in the world.

Following the runaway success of the Cayenne , in 2005 the company embarked on the next phase of development - a 10,000m2 office block constructed beside the road to Mönsheim. And a few years later the Motorsport department, based at the Flacht end of the facility moved to new premises.

And with the Macan about to go into production, Porsche announced the biggest expansion of Weissach yet. A four-year building program would completely rehouse the styling and R&D departments, while a new ‘aero acoustic’ wind tunnel replaced Bott’s 25-year-old model. At the same time, an integrated electronics center brought together the various groups that had formed as the software side of vehicle design had grown. In 2015 as Porsche introduced its second generation of V6 petrol engines, new engine test rigs were also commissioned.

As interesting as the history of the Weissach facility is, the real story lies with the legendary cars that were developed at the center.

Some Of The Most Legendary Porsche Vehicles Passed Through The Weissach Development Centre

It’s fitting that Porsche’s most legendary vehicle, the air-cooled Porsche 911 that continues to set the classic car market alight , in early 901 guise was one of the first cars that test engineer Peter Falk, and his colleagues drove right up to the grip limit and beyond at Weissach. On these rear-engined road cars, the focus was on basic chassis set-up, aerodynamics, and endurance tests.

However, for race car development the primary objective was to extract the maximum performance and endurance out of the car. For instance: In 1969, following wheel bearing concerns, the new 917 completed 258 laps of the circuit, stopping just once to refuel - satisfying the engineers that the wheel bearings were good.

As for the fastest car to conquer the skidpan – that honor goes to a 956 driven by Falk in April of 1984. Recording a time of 14.4 seconds Falk averaged 150.576 km/h with a lateral acceleration of 1.858 g. The record still stands today, and will likely never be beaten, because, although modern racing tires enable higher lateral acceleration for a few seconds, they would probably not withstand 14 seconds on the limit.

Today, Porsche’s ties between series production and motorsport are stronger than ever before, ensuring that every Porsche is developed using the experience and efficiency gained from over 60 years of motorsports and more than 30,000 race victories – no matter from which side of the test track it originates.

From first sketches to stunning prototypes, legendary Porsche vehicles are developed, tested and prepared for production at the Weissach Development Centre.

While there’s no denying its competence and ability straight out of the box, it highlights just how pricey new cars have become. And that’s before you start going through the many, many options.

How about a lovely leather interior for $4,960? Or a sports exhaust system for $3,380? Even ambient lighting is going to cost you $580. Things have gotten so dire that you could practically buy a car for the price of some of these extras. Don’t believe us? Then read on.

You’ve Got Options

How about a lovely leather interior for $4,960? Or a sports exhaust system for $3,380? Even ambient lighting is going to cost you $580. Things have gotten so dire that you could practically buy a car for the price of some of these extras. Don’t believe us? Then read on.

Let’s take the Porsche 911 GT3 RS, for example. A starting price of $244,650 is more than twice that of a base Carrera. Sure, it will deliver better lap times than supercars, which cost much more. Still, there’s no denying that it has some rather spicy pricing.

The variations you can pick from are endless: coupes, convertibles, targas, track-ready, off-road prepped, fast or stupendously fast. It is tough to decide.

So let us make it a bit easier. The base 370 horsepower Carrera is a superb choice, pick the convertible if you live somewhere warm. If you enjoy attending track days, then go with the GT3. Job done.

Standard Is Never Enough

The GT3 RS already has a massive rear wing, tons of excellent standard features, and a 4.0-liter flat-six motor that develops a staggering 518 horsepower. It will blast from 0-60mph in 3.0 seconds and outhandle almost anything with wheels. But you know that your neighbors will be asking whether you specced the Weissach Package they read all about on the internet.

If you’ve never heard of it, the Weissach Package may sound like a bundled German holiday offering, perhaps with a scenic bus trip and beer tasting at a local pub. The Weissach Package Isn’t a Holiday Trip

If you’ve never heard of it, the Weissach Package may sound like a bundled German holiday offering, perhaps with a scenic bus trip and beer tasting at a local pub. While there may be such a package, in the context of Porsche, it refers to a hardcore option designed to turn the GT3 RS into an even more capable track car.

The Weissach Package is the ultimate Porsche 911 GT3 RS option. It comprises 13 upgrades, including extensive Carbon Fiber components on almost every surface, forged lightweight magnesium wheels, and detailed interior trim changes. The result is a weight saving of 33 pounds, most of which comes from your wallet becoming lighter by $33,520. Oh, and don’t forget the compulsory leather/Race-Tex interior upgrade, which costs another $4,730, bringing the total to $38,250.

The cost of a Porsche 911 GT3 RS with the Weissach Package upgrade is $282,900. And that’s before the dealers add on another $100,000. This got us thinking. You could buy a somewhat decent sportscar for the price of one Weissach Package (with the obligatory seat upgrade). After all, few of us can afford close to $300k for a new car, but $38,250 is far more doable…

The Subaru WRX has been a fan favorite for decades. It may not have the refinement or luxuries of pricier sports cars, but it certainly has the performance. Starting at a very reasonable $32,735, you get a 271-horsepower turbocharged engine, AWD, and a 6-speed manual transmission.

It’s quick on just about any surface and makes a great sound. If you want to, you can upgrade to the mid-spec Limited trim and get a sunroof, power driver’s seat, Harman Kardon audio, and keyless entry. The best news is that you’ll still be under $40,000, and it’s a brand-new car.

Top Speed: 168 MPH

0 to 60 MPH: 4.1 Seconds

In Volkswagen’s lineup, the Golf hatchback is next in terms of popularity after the Beetle. The Beetle takes the first slot for fame, but it’s no match for the Golf’s performance– specifically, the Golf R.

The R is a high-performance version of the compact hatchback that wins hearts with a successful blend of performance and the daily driving practicality Golf is known for. It typically relies on a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder supported by the company’s 4Motion all-wheel-drive system. The current model makes 315 horsepower and a 0–60 mph time of 4.1 seconds.

Volkswagen Golf R

If you like the idea of a Golf but want the kind of performance that will scare some V8s off the line, then take a look at the 315-horsepower AWD Golf R. It will press you into your seat with its 4.5-second 0-60mph time, and comes packed with tech and luxury features for the school run, too. It’s a bit pricier than the GTI, so you’ll need to consider a slightly used one to make our budget.

The latest generation BMW 2 Series offers traditional RWD BMW driving dynamics in a compact package. The 230i Coupe produces 255 horsepower and will hit 60mph in 5.5 seconds, and you can get one new for just $38,800. Look for a nearly new one; even the AWD model is within your grasp.

The Dodge Challenger is the polar opposite of a car like the Porsche 911 GT3 RS. Instead of a high-revving, cutting-edge flat-six motor, it can be had with various muscular old-school V6 and V8 motors.

32 mpg

If you spend most of your time driving around town, a Mini Cooper is a superb choice. Its compact dimensions make it easy to park and maneuver through traffic, and you can get it in two doors, four doors, or even with a convertible roof.

The base 134 horsepower models will get 29 mpg around town and 32 mpg overall. Upgrade to the 189 horsepower S trim, and you lose just one mpg overall. Even the range-topping 228 horsepower JCW version still manages 29 mpg in mixed driving conditions.

The Mini range is packed with great cars, but if performance is your main criterion, then the Mini JCW (John Cooper Works) is the one you want. The 2 door Hardtop model offers 228-horsepower and excellent handling, but for serious pace you’ll enjoy the Clubman JCW. That’s because it adds AWD and bumps the power up to 301 horsepower. It costs over $42,000 new, so get a nearly new model to meet our budget.

Toyota certainly bucked the trend back in 2012 when it released the GT86. It was the only car in its class to offer rear-wheel-drive and an engine without a turbo. The idea was great, but the car needed a bit more power to truly shine, and the second-gen GR86 sorted that problem out.

It may be relatively new, but the GR86 is quite likely to be the last of its kind. Perhaps wait a few years for depreciation to set in and then get yourself a mint low-mileage example.

Toyota GR86

The original Toyota 86 was almost perfect. Its replacement, the GR86, gets even closer. It improves on the already impressive handling and now has a far peppier 228-horsepower 2.4-liter motor. It looks great, drives as well as sportscars, costs twice as much and can be yours for only $29,300. Aside from the pricing, that can also be said for most Porsches.

The Porsche 718 is the “junior” sports car in the Porsche lineup and it suffers from seemingly interminable little brother syndrome just like the 914 which preceded it some 45 years ago. The 718 is smaller and lighter than a Porsche 911 and with an equal engine to a 911 you could reason that the 718 would be able to outdo its famous big brother on track. But Porsche has a habit of short changing the 718 (née Boxster/Cayman) and seemingly always finding a way to handicap it. The original 914-6 was only fitted with Porsche’s lowest-output 6-cylinder even when the sportier versions were dimensionally identical. The standard 718 GT4 model has a great engine but was hampered by intergalactic gear ratios (whether you chose the PDK or the manual) which had it doing 132 km/h in second gear! But as a swan song for the gasoline-powered 718, Porsche finally delivered and made the 718 everything we knew it could be.

Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS gets the engine it always deserved

The Porsche 718 GT4 RS came out in 2022 so I am a little late to the party but I had to drive one while these are still around. The tasty recipe to make a 718 GT4 RS is to take one part lightweight 718 chassis and stir in one Porsche 911 GT3 engine. That’s the basic idea but it’s not that simple if you look closer. Dimensionally, the big issue with shoving a 911 GT3 motor into a Cayman is that it uses large vertical intake stacks that are not compatible with the 718’s mid-engine packaging. To preserve the intake runners which are key to the engine’s high-end delivery, Porsche brought the intake inside the passenger compartment and gave the GT4 RS its defining feature. Air makes its way through twin inlets that replace the rear quarter windows on the 718. It then passes through a beautiful carbon fibre intake tube before entering the plenum chamber, all of which is exposed inside the passenger area. Ever leaned your ear against the glass on a car or train? It allows you to hear all sorts of mechanical noises. This crazy-pants intake does the same thing.

Though you can’t see the engine, you can certainly hear it. You hear every part of it, in fact. You hear it gulping in air behind you and you can feel the resonance of the intake sound in your shoulder blades. The 4.0L flat six is a stone-cold killer of an engine. It idles with the same nervous energy as a race car. The engineers seemingly care as much about NVH as Trump cares about his blood sugar. The RS makes 79 hp more than a GT4 for a grand total of 493. I repeat, just shy of 500 naturally-aspirated horsepower in a lightweight 718. That peak power arrives at a spine-tingling 8,400 rpm! Peak torque is a less-impressive 331 lb-ft, which comes in at a lofty 6,750 rpm. The RS hits peak torque before most engines have hit peak horsepower. The engine is the undisputed star of the show but there’s more to the RS than the loud lump in the middle.

718 Cayman GT4 RS aerodynamics and chassis

The bodywork of the car front front to back has been altered for better aerodynamic performance. The front wheel wells are ventilated on the top and the trailing edges of the wheel wells are chamfered to aid in exhausting high pressure air. The massive rear wing uses a swan-neck design to allow the active surface of the wing (the underside) to be unmarred by supports which would have reduced its aero effect. And though you can’t really see them from the outside, there are massive diffusers front and rear underneath the car to stick it to the ground at high speed.

The chassis is also heavily reworked for the RS variant. The RS uses unique dampers and sway bars, both of which are much more firm than you’d find on a cooking-grade Cayman. Topping it off you get 20-inch centre-lock wheels. The RS model is the only one in the 718 lineup where you can pair centre lock wheels with the 718.

porsche weissach visit

Our test model was equipped with the Weissach Package, which is a hardcore performance package on an already hardcore performance car. The Weissach pack costs an additional $15k on top of the $188,800 MSRP for the RS (which does not include the $2,850 delivery fee). The Weissach package trims many of the car’s external pieces like mirror caps and rear wing in carbon fibre for further weight savings. Our car was also equipped with the optional magnesium lightweight wheels for an extraordinary $17,840! Don’t curb them.

European exclusive features of the 718 Cayman GT4 RS

This European test car has a few differences from the GT4 RS that you can (still) buy in Canada. In Europe, ordering the Weissach pack gets you a super cool rear roll bar that ties into the chassis behind your head. In North America adding safety items like this is pretty much impossible so our cars go without. Another interesting feature we can’t get is the radio delete package this car had! Up front, you won’t find a touchscreen, just an empty cubby. This saves a few pounds and adds to the no-nonsense vibe in the interior, but here in Canada, all cars must be sold with a rearview camera which necessitates a screen. Thus, you can’t NOT have a radio in Canada. But even if this car had a radio, you wouldn’t be able to hear it.

Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS is a complete sensory experience

On the road, the sound is completely enveloping. At low speeds you can hear gear whine from the PDK double-clutch transaxle and as speeds rise, you hear more and more of that glorious engine. Like most Porsche models, the RS has a selectable two-mode exhaust but on this car the two settings you can choose from are: incredibly loud and another one which is somehow even louder. The “loud”setting is so raucous that it’s fairly antisocial to use it anywhere but a racetrack. You will be heard for miles in any direction at 9,000 rpm.

Driving the 2024 Porsche 718 Cayman GT4 RS is an intense experience. It’s not a car you’d want to commute in every day. The suspension is expectedly stiff over bumps and every pothole jostles you in those sweet one-piece carbon-fibre bucket seats. It’s loud enough on the highway to want earplugs on a long drive and the only cabin nicety is air conditioning. But open up that engine and it all (almost) becomes worth it. The GT4 RS is a car that wants to run hard and if you let it, it’s an exhilarating experience. With huge tires and big power, you don’t want to go exploring its cornering limits on public roads. Luckily in Germany they have de-restricted autobahn sections where one can let this car really fly. The short gearing means this car is doing 3-4,000 rpm at highway speed but I can also tell you it sounds great cruising along in 7th gear at a sustained 120 mph. The RS doesn’t even break a sweat at this speed.

The GT4 RS is undoubtedly the ultimate 718. Porsche has finally let the 911’s little brother be all it can be but sadly, it’s the end of the road for the gas-powered 718 as we know it. For 2025, the 718 is going fully-electric and this screaming four-litre animal will be only a fond memory. But for me it’s enough that Porsche just once, took the leash off this car and let us see its true potential.

Development Centre Weissach

7,500 residents, an abundance of nature and one of the world's leading development centres: welcome to Weissach, the birthplace of all Porsche models .

A place where engineering and enthusiasm have always gone hand in hand. Where visions are born and every model is developed completely from scratch. From the initial idea to the finished design. From the very first touch to the final test drive. From the race-bred sports car to the thoroughbred race car.

Here at the heart of this rural idyll, just 25 kilometres from our main factory, the sports cars of the future are born. And have been since 1971. The Development Centre Weissach combines all the components of the early design phase: design studio, prototype development, wind tunnel and test rigs. Directly adjacent is the dedicated test track, where every Porsche is put through its paces. This applies to both sports cars and race cars alike. Because the latter are developed just a few hundred metres away on the other side of the test track: in the Porsche Motorsport Centre in Flacht. There could hardly be closer links between series production and motorsport. Which is how we ensure that every Porsche is developed using the experience and efficiency gained from over 60 years of motorsports and more than 30,000 race victories – no matter from which side of the test track it originates.
