Live review: Nine Inch Nails, London O2 Academy Brixton

God is dead, we’re told, but Trent Reznor isn’t and he’s delivering the best shows of his life…

Live review: Nine Inch Nails, London O2 Academy Brixton

“It’s been a while,” says Trent Reznor, the back of a hand pressed against his glistening forehead, surveying this grand venue like a rogue general.

He’s right. Nine Inch Nails shows in the UK, to court a cliche, have been like buses: there were none for four years, then five came along at once – one in Glasgow, two at Cornwall’s Eden Project, one in Manchester last night, and this appointment in London at a venue they share a rich history with. In the throes of tube and rail strikes, of course, buses are one of the few ways to actually get here tonight, though from the look of a crowd that includes Tilda Swinton, Gary Numan and Justin Hawkins, few have let any impediment prevent them witnessing one of the year’s most exceptional gigs.

Those who arrive early enough catch the opening slot from Yves Tumor. The experimental performer and their band seem to pull in opposing directions, musically; Yves, the recording alias of Sean Bowie, opts for a sultry, artful delivery, while their accompanying guitarist seems to be doing an Eddie Van Halen impression. Both are interesting to watch, even if the sound quality does a disservice to the nuances of their collective efforts.

nin uk tour review

From the moment the sound of a paddle hitting flesh signals the start of Mr. Self Destruct, it’s clear Trent and co. are playing for keeps. Amid strobes that threaten to overwhelm the mind and the ear canal-scraping riff to The Downward Spiral’s opening track, there’s that brief, beautiful moment of calm. As an ambient drone engulfs, blue lights cut through the obligatory smoke to give the impression of being underwater, drowning, surrendering to your fate, before the cacophony pulls you back out. And that's just the first song.

One of Nine Inch Nails’ many gifts is their ability to constantly overhaul their set, allowing for markedly different experiences night after night. Indeed, looking at setlists from their UK shows so far and seeing the inclusion of Discipline and Happiness In Slavery on different nights, for the first time since 2009 and 1994 respectively, suggests all bets are off. Tonight we get the live debut of Sunspots from With Teeth, which while not necessarily occupying a prime spot on the wishlist of many, is a perfectly-curated moody addition.

If there’s a central tenet governing this performance, it’s unbridled intensity. Sometimes, as on the galloping Wish and the venomous Heresy, that intensity is musical. During Copy Of A, when darting lights project the band’s giant silhouettes onto the wall, it’s in the clever production. In the double-header of I’m Afraid Of Americans and Fashion, it’s their reverence for their fallen hero, David Bowie. Watching Robin Finck, who’s of the captivating school of guitarists who violently pulls sounds from his instrument, or Ilan Rubin, whose thunderous drum break during The Perfect Drug sets jaws agape, that intensity is in the performances.

And then there’s Trent, who unlike his creative partner Atticus Ross, is an untethered presence – dancing, goading, commanding – but most importantly of all, looking happier and more relaxed on a stage than he’s ever done before.

nin uk tour review

If there’s a grumble to be had, it’s that we only get one track from The Fragile. Trent mentions that Alan Moulder, the co-producer of NIN’s third album, is in attendance, so one might perhaps have expected it to be more generously represented – particularly when there are seven cuts from The Downward Spiral. Nevertheless, The Fragile’s sole ambassador, Even Deeper, sandwiched between Reptile and Hurt during the encore, proves a highlight.

“It’s been an honour,” smiles Trent towards the end, unsurprisingly thrilled to be back on the road and fully able to do what he’s done for 33 years. What’s more surprising is the modesty with which he addresses these fans, as if he, genius songwriter, producer, rock god, and two-time Oscar winner, is the lucky one in this equation. It’s great that he feels this way, because in the bargain, this audience gets to see a live band that, on form like this, is inarguably the best in the world. Bow down.

Nine Inch Nails at Meltdown: Uncompromising brilliance

Trent reznor is back - and this time, he's even angrier.

Nine Inch Nails' Trent Reznor tears up the Royal Festival Hall (Photo: Victor Frankowski)

Nine Inch Nails Royal Festival Hall, Southbank Centre ★★★★★

Nine Inch Nails are not a casual band. Nothing about their relentless, pioneering brand of industrial metal, or frontman and Oscar-winning composer Trent Reznor, could be described as relaxed since Reznor started recording under the moniker 30 years ago.

Over the decades a rotation of talented musicians have joined and left the frontman’s not-so-merry band of men, metamorphosing into one of metal’s most experimental and exalted live acts.

The Southbank Centre ’s beautiful 1950s Royal Festival Hall is an unlikely setting for Reznor to vent his apocalyptic recollections of hate, pain and alienation, but an exciting opportunity for 2,500 hardcore fans to see their favourite band in the most intimate of settings.

Nine Inch Nails put on a spectacular light show (Photo: Victor Frankowski)

NIN were the undisputed highlight of this year’s Meltdown festival, curated by much-loved goth teddy bear Robert Smith of the Cure, and their performance coincides with the release of latest EP Bad Witch .

His Dark Materials

Yet only two new tracks – the mad jazz funk of “ God Break Down the Door” and “ Ahead of Ourselves” – make the cut. Tonight’s show is a love letter to The Fragile , NIN’s 1999 opus born from what Reznor describes as “a really dark period in my life.”

The album’s opener “ Somewhat Damage d” doubles as tonight’s introduction, a churning, bile-flecked ode to rejection which swells and oscillates throughout the hall, swiftly followed by “ The Day the World Went Away” , “ The Frail” and “ The Wretched” . All are  punctuated by hypnotic lightshow of colours, smoke and nightmarish shadow projections.

Reznor, 53, is a muscled messiah, a stocky figure in black and khaki alternating between barking out frantic, hostile anthems – “ March of the Pigs” and “ Wish” –  and almost whispering the delicate, devastating “ Something I Can Never Have” .

Crowd interaction is kept to a minimum (two shouts of “I love you, Trent!” are studiously ignored), unsurprising given the band’s “various states of jet lag and exhaustion”. “The colours seem real fuckin’ intense, right now,” Reznor observes, drily.

The setlist drew heavily from 1999s The Fragile and 1995s The Downward Spiral (Photo: Victor Frankowski)

This latest era in NIN history is Reznor at his most nakedly political, the rage he used to direct inwards is now channelled into laser-focused fury at the Trump administration. Bush-era tracks “The Good Soldier” and “The Great Destroyer” are revived and imbued with a heavier, more sinister relevance, while 2017’s boppy “Less Than” sees the father of four grab a tambourine and funk like there’s no tomorrow.

Brisk if well-trodden covers of David Bowie ’s  “I’m Afraid of Americans” and Gary Numan’s “ Metal”  nod to the band’s forefathers, before they tear into a gigantic rendition of 1994’s gothic “ Reptile” , leaving the room ringing with the chorus ‘Oh my beautiful liar, Oh my precious whore.’

“ Hurt” , famously covered by Johnny Cash, is a fitting end to an evening of emotional devastation, where Nine Inch Nails proved they’re every bit as visceral and vital as they were in 1988.

Nine Inch Nails announce London, Glasgow & Manchester dates for June

The industrial titans will play glasgow, manchester and london.

By Joe Goggins

Nine Inch Nails perform live

Nine Inch Nails have announced three new UK shows for this summer.

The industrial rock titans had previously confirmed a two-night stand at Cornwall’s Eden Project for June 17 and 18, and will now play further gigs in Glasgow, Manchester and London the same month, as they return to the UK for the first time since 2018. You can see the full itinerary below.

The venues on the run – O 2 Academy Glasgow, O 2 Apollo Manchester and O 2 Academy Brixton – are intimate by NIN ’s standards; their shows are famed for their high production values. The band, now officially comprised of Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross, released two new albums in their ‘Ghosts’ series in 2020, ‘Ghosts V: Together’ and ‘Ghosts VI: Locusts’. Both were made available as a free download, as a show of solidarity with fans during the coronavirus pandemic.

The group had previously been set to return to the stage in the U.S. last autumn, but pulled a string of shows over COVID-19 concerns. “When originally planned, these shows were intended to be a cathartic and celebratory return to live music,” they said in a statement at the time. “However, with each passing day it’s becoming more apparent we’re not at that place yet.”

The statement concluded: “We are sorry for any inconvenience or disappointment and look forward to seeing you again when the time is right.” They’re now currently scheduled to make their live return next month in Raleigh, North Carolina, at the Red Hat Amphitheater. Support on all UK dates will come from Yves Tumor, bar the first night at the Eden Project; Nitzer Ebb will open on the 17th instead. Tickets go on general sale on Friday (March 25) at 10am; an O 2 Priority pre-sale opens on Wednesday (March 23) at 9am.

NIN last appeared in the UK in 2018 at Meltdown Festival, at the personal invitation of that year’s curator, The Cure frontman Robert Smith. They played a one-off show at the Royal Albert Hall on the same trip. Their last regional shows in the UK came as they toured ‘Hesitation Marks’ in 2014. The June gigs will be their first in Europe since being inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2020. The timing of the tour leaves open the possibility of a Glastonbury appearance, although they were not among the artists named in the initial lineup announcement .

Nine Inch Nails, June 2022:

15 – Glasgow, O 2 Academy Glasgow

17 – Cornwall, Eden Project

18 – Cornwall, Eden Project

20 – Manchester, O 2 Apollo Manchester

21 – London, O 2 Academy Brixton

News: Nine Inch Nails Add Additional Dates To UK Tour

nin uk tour review

After recently revealing two special headline shows this summer at Cornwall’s Eden Project, Nine Inch Nails today announce three additional UK dates, completing the band’s final UK & European touring plans for the year.

Either side of the Eden Project shows will see dates at O2 Academy Glasgow (Jun 15th), O2 Apollo Manchester (Jun 20th) and a night in the capital at London’s O2 Academy Brixton (Jun 21st).

Yves Tumor joins the bill for the sold-out Eden Project show on June 18th, as well as the three newly-announced dates, and Nitzer Ebb will support on June 17th for what promises to be one of the live highlights of the year. The shows will be NIN’s first UK headline dates in four years.

Nine Inch Nails was inducted into the Rock & Roll Hall of Fame, headquartered in Cleveland, in 2020.

NIN bring their show, hailed by The Guardian as ‘saw toothed,‘ with the ‘ferocity of a Rottweiler gnashing through its muzzle, bathed in exquisite monochromatic lighting and smoke’ to the lush grounds described by The Times as ‘Magical…half Glastonbury, half Glydnenbourne’ and of which the Evening Standard wrote ‘The nearest you can get to watching a gig on the moon.’

Nine Inch Nails Play First Show in Four Years: Video + Setlist

Nine Inch Nails Play First Show in Four Years: Video + Setlist

Nine Inch Nails played their first show in four years at the Red Hat Amphitheater in Raleigh, North Carolina on Thursday night.

The Trent Reznor-led outfit performed a career-spanning 21-song set that opened with four songs from The Fragile , followed by multiple tracks from each The Downward Spiral and With Teeth . Notably, the band dusted off “Every Day Is Exactly the Same,” from With Teeth , for the first time since 2006.

Elsewhere in the set, NIN covered a pair of David Bowie songs, “I’m Afraid of Americans” and “Fashion,” the latter marking the first time the band performed the song live in concert. (Reznor and Atticus Ross first covered the song as part of a David Bowie virtual tribute concert in 2021.)

To close the show, NIN played a three-song encore that included “Reptile,” “And All That Could Have Been,” and “Hurt.”

Watch fan-capture footage of the concert and see the full setlist below.

Thursday night’s show in Raleigh marked the beginning of Nine Inch Nails’ 2022 US tour . They’re next set to headline Atlanta’s Shaky Knees Festival on Saturday, followed by shows in Daytona Beach, Philadelphia, and Boston, with additional dates scheduled in the fall. Check out their full tour itinerary , and get tickets to their upcoming dates via Ticketmaster .

By Jon Blistein

Jon Blistein

Nine Inch Nails will return to the road for the first time in four years with a string of headlining gigs scheduled for the spring and late summer

The band will kick things off with a quick three-show run: April 28 in Raleigh, North Carolina, April 30 in Atlanta and May 1 in Franklin, Tennessee (just outside of Nashville). A lengthier trek will begin with two shows at Red Rocks Amphitheatre in Morrison, Colorado Sept. 2 and 3, and wrap Sept. 24 with a special hometown gig at the the Blossom Music Center in Cleveland that will also feature sets from Ministry and Nitzer Ebb.

Nine Inch Nails have enlisted the help of several artists to provide support during the rest of the trek. Boy Harsher will join for gigs in Raleigh, North Carolina and Franklin, Tennessee, while 100 Gecs will open at both shows in Philadelphia. Yves Tumor will then perform during a stretch of gigs, Sept. 2 through 15.

Tickets for Nine Inch Nails’ tour will go on sale Feb. 11 at 10 a.m. local time. A fan presale will start Feb. 8 at 10 a.m. local time. Full information is available on Nine Inch Nails’ website .

Nine Inch Nails were scheduled to tour in 2020 and 2021, but scrapped those gigs because of the pandemic. The group has stayed busy over the past couple years, releasing two albums in 2020, Ghosts V: Together and Ghosts VI: Locusts , and teaming up with noise-rock group Health for a new song, “Isn’t Everyone,” last May. In 2020, Nine Inch Nails were also inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame .

Outside the band, Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross have kept characteristically busy with other projects as well, like producing Halsey’s most recent album, If I Can’t Have Love, I Want Power . The duo also won their second Best Original Score Oscar in 2020 for their work on the Pixar movie Soul with Jon Batiste (they were nominated in the same category that year, too, for David Fincher’s Mank ).

Nine Inch Nails and Jane's Addiction Tour Dates Announced

nin uk tour review

Nine Inch Nails and the original Jane's Addiction lineup will embark on a May/June co-headlining tour that will see these seminal artists sharing a stage for the first time since the historic debut of the Lollapalooza festival in 1991. The genesis of the upcoming tour came about in late 2008 after NIN's Trent Reznor was tapped to produce Jane's first recordings since reforming.

The NIN/JA tour will feature a streamlined NIN with Reznor on vocals, guitars, keys, Robin Finck on guitars and keys, Justin Meldal-Johnsen on bass and keys, and newest NIN member IIan Rubin on drums and keys. NIN's stripped down configuration for the upcoming dates was inspired by a pair of club shows toward the end of last year's wildly ambitious Lights in the Sky tour. Leaving the massive production in the trucks for those two nights freed up the band for spontaneous performances including several seldom-aired NIN classics and inspired NIN to take a similarly unencumbered and unpredictable approach to the May/June dates, which include previously announced NIN appearances at the Sasquatch and Bonnaroo festivals.

For the first time in 17 years, the original lineup of Jane’s Addiction will tour - vocalist Perry Farrell, guitarist Dave Navarro, bassist Eric Avery and drummer Stephen Perkins. The possibility of reforming first took shape in April 2008 when the musicians performed and accepted the Godlike Genius Award bestowed on them by N.M.E. Magazine at their US Awards ceremony. The band then tested the waters with small, secret shows around the Los Angeles area and the tremendous excitement from the shows lead to their decision to tour again.

The “full circle” nature of the co-headlining tour has not been lost on the artists, with Reznor recently blogging…

“Towards the beginning of my career in Nine Inch Nails, our biggest break came in the form of an invitation to perform a series of shows with Jane’s Addiction. These performances essentially created and defined the term “alternative” rock in the US, created an ongoing festival franchise that is still thriving (Lollapalooza), set the stage for Nirvana to shift popular taste a few months later, and were really fucking FUN to play and attend - truly the best times I’ve had. The shows were epic. So epic, they propelled NIN to the “next level” (whatever that means), but caused Jane’s to implode. The band broke up at the end of that tour.”

Jane’s guitarist Dave Navarro responded in kind, paying homage to the recent collaboration with the Nine Inch Nails frontman and revealing enthusiasm for the upcoming shows.

“Since our reformation, we have been spending a lot of time with Trent in the rehearsal studio and in the recording studio, working on new stuff, addressing some old stuff and more importantly, creating a friendship and working relationship,” Navarro explains. “It's rare that touring partners have an opportunity to spend so much time together creatively before a tour. Regardless of the collaborative outcome, our time with Trent has brought forth a new focus and sense of purpose that we plan to share with you on a nightly basis.”

nin uk tour review

Review & Photography by Sian Connolly for MPM

As the whole of the UK soaks up the sun, it’s not long before an ‘ice’ warning is issued… pack your bags because we’re off on the ‘Wurst Vacation’. All puns aside, the metal-core beasts from Boston, who have been taking the world by storm since 2000, are here in Manchester ready to put on the horror show of a lifetime. Please welcome, the one and only, Ice Nine Kills.

First up are Thai alternative metal band, Defying Decay. Hailing all the way from Bangkok, these guys certainly did not disappoint. Delivering an unforgettable performance and even a circle pit, the energy of the crowd was immaculate.

nin uk tour review

With the unique blend of post-hardcore and alternative rock, everyone, including myself, can definitely agree that for the first support out of four bands performing tonight, Defying Decay made their mark.

nin uk tour review

Lead singer, Jay Poom Euarchukiati, effortlessly connects with the crowd as his powerful vocals echo around the venue, with the passion and enthusiasm of the band making their presence remarkable. Amazing performance.

Next on the stage, we have US rockers, Lansdowne. Now this performance was nothing short of electric, a high-energy show that had the crowd jumping and singing along to every song.

nin uk tour review

With raw energy that was hard to ignore, lead singer, Jon Ricci, showed off his gritty vocals whilst the band’s powerful, hard-hitting rock sound all blended perfectly together.

nin uk tour review

The blistering guitar solos (Shaun & Josh) and incredibly tight rhythm on the drums (Glenn) proved that Lansdowne are definitely a force to be reckoned with.

For the third support of the night, we’re off over to the other side of the world to see the highly anticipated, Australian, gothic band, SKYND.

nin uk tour review

As two anonymous members of the band take to the stage in masks, already I’m loving the vibe. The lights go dark as lead singer, Skynd, appears on stage. The crowd goes wild. You would think that SKYND are the headliners from the number of cheers in the room.

The whole performance was hauntingly beautiful; a mesmerising show that kept us entranced from start to finish. Skynds vocals were perfectly complimented by the brooding sounds performed by multi-instrumentalist, known to the world as Father.

nin uk tour review

Flawlessly switching between two very different tones at any given moment, SKYND have the ability to sound dark and menacing one minute and sweet and childlike the next. Her movements mimicking a puppet being controlled by its master’s strings. Between songs, short clips of true crime news stories played over the speakers before seamlessly diving into their next hit. Definitely a show for anyone who loves their music with a side of serial killers.

It’s now time for the moment all 2,600 of us have been waiting for. The gig that has been sold out for months; Massachusetts metal heads, Ice Nine Kills. Get ready, the most theatrical, mind-blowing, thrilling performance is about to begin.

nin uk tour review

Smoke fills the stage as each member of the band appears in suits and bow ties, very appropriate attire for the first song on the setlist. Kicking off the night with “Funeral Derangements”, a song based on the horror film ‘Pet Sematary’, lead vocalist, Spencer Charnas emerges from the wall of smoke wielding an axe pointed to the crowd.

With signs in the background saying ‘Welcome To Horrorwood’ (the title of their 2021 album), the fans go wild. INK are here and to Horrorwood we go.

nin uk tour review

Things took a more gruesome turn for the second song, “Wurst Vacation”, a track based on the film ‘Hostel’, as Spencer appears in a butchers-like apron covered in blood, clutching a hatchet in his right hand.

He began ‘chopping off’ a scared actor’s arm, followed by ‘severing’ his head to which Charnas proceeded to show the crowd, holding them high and then throwing them to the side of the stage. Aside from feeling as though I’ve got a front-row seat at a murder scene, the musical experience was just as phenomenal as the theatrics and it was obvious the crowd agreed.

nin uk tour review

The audience passionately sang along to every single song, back to back as well as saving the time to have a good old mosh and have plenty of crowd surfing.

Throughout the night, the quintet performed several songs from their albums ‘The Silver Scream’ and its sequel ‘Welcome To Horrorwood: The Silver Scream 2’. INK also took us on a trip down memory Lane playing hits off their 2015 album ‘Every Trick In The Book’.

nin uk tour review

Overall, one of THE best shows I have ever been to. An incredible, thrilling, unforgettable night performed by an indescribably talented band.

In order to make up for canceled shows from 2020 and 2021, Nine Inch Nails embarked on a new tour . Apart from the Wave Goodbye Tour in 2009, this was the only other tour without a new album to support. Opening acts include Nitzer Ebb, Yves Tumor , Boy Harsher, and 100 gecs. Stage Set-Up

nin uk tour review

The setup was largely similar to that of the Cold And Black And Infinite Tour . An additional leg of that tour was originally planned for 2020, and the production was now able to be brought back. The onstage PAR can lighting from the 2018 tour was altered to include rack-like structures around each set of lights.

Typical Setlist

Like the Cold And Black And Infinte Tour, the setlists for this tour were varied and changed greatly from show to show.

" March Of The Pigs " was used as a set opener for the first time at one of the shows. Several songs returned to the setlist after long absences, such as " Heresy ", " Every Day Is Exactly The Same ", " Discipline ", " Love Is Not Enough ", and " Down In It ". " Everything " and " Sunspots " made their live debuts, as well as " Fashion " and " Isn't Everyone ".

It was like this before covid though. The 2017 and 2018 tour dates were random and spread out, albeit a little less so at the end of 2018. This is unusual and you actually can't make money like this. You have to consistently tour for at least 4 months to start to break even for upfront costs.
