History of the Maldives

The Maldives is known for its rich Islamic heritage, which can be traced back to the 12th-century when contact with Arab merchants and travelers paved the way for the adoption of Islam as the national religion, officially replacing Buddhism in 1153 and transforming the archipelago into a unified Sultanate. A short-lived Portuguese occupation in the 16th-century is the only time the country has lost its independence although it voluntarily became a British Protectorate in 1887 . 

Due to the strong unity of the archipelago under the Sultanate , the Maldives was able to defend its independence throughout the centuries. The Sultanate dynasties were followed by an elective Sultanate in 1932 and the archipelago gained complete independence from the British in 1965 , becoming a republic shortly thereafter. The Maldives remained a member of the Commonwealth up until 2016. More recent history has been focused on the challenges the islands face in terms of climate change and rising sea levels, and the country is determined to become carbon neutral, so a trip to the Maldives is a great choice for eco-travelers.

• Public displays of affection are frowned upon and dress should be modest outside of resorts, with long pants and skirts preferred for men and women respectively. 
• Elders are shown great respect in the Maldives and crossing your legs in front of them is considered rude. 
• Outward displays of aggression are a sign of poor character. Don’t get flustered or lose your temper. 
• Always try to use your right hand when passing an object or eating. Many Maldivian dishes are prepared at the table and eaten by hand, so pay careful attention to this. You can always ask for cutlery if ‘rolling’ your rice like the locals do gets too messy. 
• Never step over someone, or point your feet at other people, food, or sacred books. 
• Foreigners are rarely allowed to visit mosques or local homes in the Maldives, but be sure to remove your shoes if you do. Never walk in front of someone while they’re praying and don’t touch the Qur’an.

Essential information for the Maldives

Island transfers

Look out for us or someone from your hotel who will take you to your departure point. If the weather isn’t playing ball or there are lots of flight arrivals, you may not be able to leave straight away. If you are flying, you may need to wait up to 3 hours. Seaplanes only operate when it’s daylight, so you may need to spend a night at an airport hotel.  Seaplane and domestic aircraft luggage allowance is 20kg plus 5kg hand luggage per person. Excess may be charged and/or carried later.

• The Maldives has a year-round tropical warm climate.

• The Maldives is  3 hours ahead of South Africa, although some islands that are on ‘island time’ are 1 or 2 hours ahead of Male.

What must I pack?  

• You will more than likely fly by seaplane from the mainland to reach your final destination island in the Maldives. Be sure to check what the seaplane luggage allowance is before you pack your bags.
• The Maldives enjoys a year-round warm, tropical climate, and you will spend most of your time in and around the sea, so beachwear is a must. Pack lightweight, breathable clothing with a dressier outfit or two for dinners – think  laidback luxury.
• The Maldives is a Muslim country, and it is considered respectful to dress conservatively, especially around the airport, Male and small villages (you won't need to worry too much about it in your resort, as there are mostly tourists around). Pack a large scarf to wear over your shoulders and bring at least one pair of loose trousers or a long skirt or dress.
• As for shoes, some resorts have a "no shoes, no news" policy, which means you get to spend your holiday in barefoot luxury. 
• Don't leave home without sunscreen, lip balm, hat, and sunglasses. 
• Mini first aid kit and regular prescription medication. 
• Camera – or just use your phone.
• Travel adaptor.
• It is worth mentioning that it is illegal to bring alcohol into the Maldives.

Wizz Air launches $550 'all you can fly' annual subscription pass

LONDON — Travelers in Europe can now take unlimited flights for 499 euros ($550) a year under a new travel subscription service from budget carrier  Wizz Air .

The annual “all you can fly” pass, which allows passengers to book one-way and roundtrip flights throughout the year, will be available for the introductory fee until Friday before the price rises to 599 euros.

Details on the airline’s  website  show passengers can book flights with “no limits” to any of its international destinations — including Athens, Greece, Madrid, Paris and Reykjavik, Iceland — up to three days before departure, with the booking window opening in September.

Each booking is subject to an additional flat fee of 9.99 euros and luggage beyond one personal item will be charged as extra.

The airline said it initially plans to release 10,000 “all you can fly” memberships, while FAQs on its website note that seats will be subject to availability, depending on “several external and internal factors.”

The launch follows similar subscription packages by U.S. carriers, such as Frontier Airlines, which last year  announced  a $599 unlimited Go Wild! pass for its North America routes.

However, while some European carriers offer multiflight bundles for a set fee, unlimited packages remain a novel concept on the Continent.

It comes as Wizz Air has seen its   profits deteriorate and customer satisfaction wane amid wider pressure on the sector following the post-pandemic travel boom.

Earlier this month, the Hungarian airline reported a 44% drop in its first-quarter operating profit. Meantime, a customer satisfaction rating of 44% put it at the bottom of a February ranking of short-haul European carriers by consumer group Which?

CEO Jozsef Varadi told CNBC on the day of releasing its first-quarter results that supply constraints were impacting the company’s short-term outlook while inflationary pressures were weighing on consumer demand.

The airline, which already runs flights to the Maldives, Cairo and Dubai, United Arab Emirates, has previously said it is exploring new routes from  Europe to India .
