How to get a Job on a Cruise Ship

So you want to live in the middle of the ocean, see the world's most glamorous ports, and get paid for it? Those in with a chance will be outgoing, friendly, willing to work their fingers to the bone and live in constant proximitfy to other people (you'll share a tiny cabin with up to 3 people). Getting a job in the cruise industry is a bit tricky for South Africans, as the cruise liners are all based overseas, and one needs to avoid the scams that do the rounds with fake jobs, scumbags trying to take advantage of those who are desperate for work - do not use an agency which charges fees for its services - this is a sure sign of a scam. Whilst coveted jobs include working in the ship's retail shops, casino jobs and excursions; you may have to settle for housekeeping or spa work to actually get a job. Once you get the job, do NOT date any passengers on board - you will get fired.

Apply for a job on a ship like the MSC Musica

There are two ways to get a job on a ship:

Apply to a cruise line for a job on one of their ship, or via one of their agencies.

Apply to a concessioner for a job on a ship. A concessioner is a company contracted to operate a spa, retail shop or entertainment on the ship.

Contacting a Cruise Company

Jobs on Cruise Ships

Cruise related jobs cover the full monty of careers. Note that you will have to apply for a particular job, as the "I'm willing to do anything" approach doesn't work. So, start off by deciding which job you want to do (which usually comes down to what you're most qualified for).

Note that sometimes the cruise lines will only want males or females to do certain jobs.

Galley jobs (in the kitchen of the ship)

The single most important factor in creating happiness for passengers is the quality of its food. Food critical jobs include:

Head Chefs typically make from USD5000 to USD8000 per month

Sous chefs may make USD3000 to USD6000 per month.

Beginner chefs' starting salary is about USD1000 per month,

Junior sous chef

Pastry chefs

Pastry Assistant chefs

Assistant Bakers

Dishwashers

Pantry chefs

Staff need to be capable of catering for the massive volumes of passengers there usually are on cruise ships, every day.

Cooks need to prepare food in accordance with the cruise line's recipes.

If you in particular enjoy cooking pastries, you could specialise and become a pastry chef or an assistant pastry chef. This would involve not just the making of pastries, but also the display of the food, whilst more senior positions would involve managing people, hiring staff and finding ways to reduce expenses.

Chef tournants are often advertised for, ie chefs who will assist wherever needed.

To qualify for food and beverage jobs:

get a qualification from a hotel, chef or catering school.

get experience working in a restaurant (ideally fine dining)

Fun fact: most cruise ships have over 100 chefs on them.

Restaurant jobs

Think waitresses/servers, chefs; as well as higher level jobs analysing the financials in an attempt to max profit.

Restuarant host/esses and

Waiters typically earn money per head, so if you have 8 people you are serving you will make less money than if you have 20 people. You're in the entertainment industry, so if you can entertain with magic tricks whilst waitering, you'll do better than somebody who can't.

Bartenders make about USD1500 per month as a starting salary; with tips this may increase to USD2500 to USD3000 a month (flair bartenders being at the top end). Selling drinks may be one of the cruise line's biggest sources of profit. Senior bartenders are required to ensure there's sufficient inventory of drinks, that passengers are well looked after and promptly served; and in senior postions bartenders would need to manage the staff who would help them achieve these goals.

Think nurses, paramedics and doctors. Yes, people on cruises get sick too! Sometimes hundreds of passengers can contract contagious gastrointestinal illnesses; resulting in vomiting and diarrhea.

Guest services

The guest services (or hospitality) team is responsible for ensuring that passengers have a positive experience on board the ship. A hostess assumes a multifaceted role encompassing diverse customer service and administrative duties aimed at ensuring passengers have a delightful voyage. Her responsibilities encompass:

Warmly Greeting Guests as they board the ship and attending to their initial inquiries or requirements.

Aiding passengers with Check-in/Check-out.

Furnishing passengers with Information about the ship's amenities, services, and activities, including dining options, entertainment schedules, excursion particulars, and safety protocols.

Managing Reservations for onboard facilities such as restaurants and spa treatments.

Overseeing housekeeping operations to ensure cabins are regularly serviced, maintained, and stocked with essential amenities for passenger comfort.

Attending to passengers' special requirements, including dietary preferences, medical needs, or requests for room enhancements.

Resolving passenger grievances

Planning and supervising special events or themed gatherings onboard, such as cocktail parties, receptions, or themed nights, to enrich passengers' experiences.

Promoting onboard services, merchandise, and promotional offers to passengers, encouraging their participation in shipboard activities and excursions.

Participating in safety drills and procedures to ensure passengers are acquainted with emergency protocols and evacuation routes, prioritizing their well-being and security.

Entertainment Team

The entertainment team hosts a variety of activities with the passengers - from trivia games and informative presentations to exercise classes and DJ'ing at the disco.

Those working at the kids' clubs (for guests up to the age of 17) may also fall into this category. This is a crucial role, as if the kids aren't happy, the parents wont be happy either. A minimum of 2 years experience would typically be required for this job. A typical salary in the kiddies clubs is from USD1800 to USD2200 per month.

The Cruise Director is likely to make USD3000 to USD4000 a month. The entertainment team reports to the Cruise Director (aka "cruise activity director" aka "cruise ship director"). The Cruise Director is expected to perform each voyage and to organise an entertainment program to ensure the guests are having fun and satisfied. The Director will be expected to interact with passengers and handle their complaints. This job suits somebody who enjoys being in the middle and leading the entertainment. Being fluent in other languages additional to english, helps.

Live performances

Live theatre is a big part of the entertainment on most ships. Working onboard as a performer will naturally require that you have the relevant skills, there's often a requirement for:

Singers/vocalists

Circus performers

And the accompanying production staff.

The average salary is USD2000 to USD3000 per month; if you have multiple skills you can earn north of USD3000 a month. Specialist solo acts can earn more than USD3000 a month. In this Tiktok clip, Jack Nolan says that he earned USD400 per month working1 1.5 hours a day 6 days a week (ie USD111 per hour).

@jackcruisesaround Hourly wage of a cruise ship musician😮🛳️ # #cruiseshipmusician # #cruiseshipcrew # #seafarer # #money # #livingwage # #musiciansalary # #bestjobever # #imamusician # #belowdeck # #jackcruisesaround # #virginvoyages # #royalcaribbean # #norwegiancruise ♬ original sound - Jack Nolan - Cruise Ship Life

Thapelo Molomo, the former SA Idols winners, is not working as a waiter as some have speculated, but as a vocalist (singer) on the cruise ship. He says that the weakness of the Rand makes working on cruise ships more lucrative.

Master classes

As part of a cruise ship's entertainment or enrichment programs, they sometimes offer classes or workshops to passengers on various topics. In order to be hired to offer these classes, you would need to be an expert in a subject (e.g. culinary, arts and craft, photography, fitness, music, dance, history and current events).

Shore Excursions

With so many different ports and the need to ensure that passengers are 100% satisfied with their excursions, a quality shore excursion team is required. Working in guest services onshore excursion, you may make about US500 to USD2000 a month, plus tips (it's not as easy to earn tips in excursions as, for example, bartending; unless you're a tour guide); with managers making USD2000 to USD3000 per month.

Photographers & videographers

The photography department normally falls under Entertainment. Selling photographs and videos is a big money spinner for cruise lines - they're sold at high prices, but it's difficult to say no to the purchase if the Mrs has her heart set on these mementos. To get this gig you should have at least a year's experience in photography and the relevant computer skills.

Photographers and videographers typically make USD800 to USD1500 a month, with managers making more.

Information Technology

Think maintenance of servers, networks and computer systems (including desktop). A minimum of 2 years relevant experience would be required, together with the appropriate academic qualifications.

You may want to work as a dealer (e.g. blackjack, roulette), a slot technician, cashier or casino host. Typically casino staff make USD2000/month to USD3000/month plus tips (which can be substantial).

Navigate to www.oceancasinojobs.com - they represent AIDA, Carnival Cruises, Costa, Cunard, Holland America, P&O Cruises, Princess Cruises and Seabourn. You'll be required to have at least a year's experience and be at least 21 years old.

Click here to see when the next interviewing cycle is in South Africa.

Along with working in the shops, working in casinso gives you the most time off, as you are only working when at sea.

In this video, Chris Wong sets out what his job as a casino host is like on Royal Caribbean; where he runs the loyalty program for the casino, which is different to the cruise line's loyalty program, and depends on the amount which is gambled on. Chris needs to identify the people who are MVPs, ensure they're having a good cruise and want to cruise again with Royal Caribbean. He also tries to get new people participating at the casino.

Retail sales ("Boutiques")

Think jewelery, watches, fragrances, cosmetics, handbags, apparel, sunglasses and liquor sales. Positions include the likes of jewellery sales specialists, fragrance consultants, sales assistants, cosmetic consultants and watch sales specialists.

To become a "shoppie" (this is what the retail staff on a ship are known as) you'll need to have at least 2 years experience in retail, be able to take inventory, and be good at working with customers. Being able to talk multiple languages is an advantage, as well as having a degree on your resume. If you've been at sea before and have the relevant experience, you may want to take a job as a manager or trainee manager.

Harding Retail are hired by some cruise companies to run the retail shops on their ships. They offer a service to Azmara Club Cruises, Carnival, Celestyal Cruises, Cunard, Fred Olsen Cruise Lines, Louis Cruises, Oceania Cruises, P&O Cruises, Regent Seven Seas Cruises, Royal Caribbean International, Saga, Seabourn, Swan Hellenic, Thomson Cruises, TUI Cruises, Viking, Voyages of Discovery and Voyages to Antiquity. They offer a wide variety of brands including Cartier, Clarins, Fossil, Gucci, Mont Blanc, Ray-Ban, Swarovski and Tissot. Click here to apply for a job with Harding Retail. Your application will be processed by their team in Bristol. On average you can expect to get off at 2 ports out of 3.

Applications for a job as a shoppie which are sent to a cruise company will usually be forwarded to their concessionaire (that's not to say you shouldn't send to them anyway, as it gives you another chance to get your name in front of everybody). If you're chosen there will probably be a short course to attend.

Salaries are target and commission based, which means that there's a lot of volatility in earnings.

Working in the shops (along with casinos) gives you the most time off, as you only work when the ship is at sea; you usually work from about 5pm to 11pm.

House keeping

The average starting salary for housekeeping staff is under USD1000 per month, but including tips one can make USD1500 to USD2000 per month. Responsibilities include cleaning rooms (cabin stewardss), public areas, doing laundry and moving baggage. To get this job first get experience in the hospitality industry and ensure your communication skills are up to scratch. Jobs include:

Housekeeping staff

Housekeeping assistance manager

Housekeeeping manager

Storekeeper

Laundry attendants

Jobs vary from masseuses to personal trainers, nail technicians, barbers, receptionists and hairdressers. Typical starting salaries are USD2000/month; with managers usually making over USD3000 a month. Passengers can enjoy facial therapies, acupuncture, massages or fitness training. Whilst not attending to passengers, expect to spend time marketing your product and taking inventories.

Navigate to www.theonboardspa.com - they represent Carnival, Disney Cruise Line, Princess Cruises, Silversea, The Yachts of Seabourn, P&O Cruises, Holland America, Royal Caribbean, Costa Cruises and Windstar Cruises. Click here to find their application form. Find out when there are interview dates in South Africa . The regional managers are Nadine Brits (email [email protected] or phone 079 5285 161) and Daniella Diem (email [email protected] or phone 071 497 3797).

The spa is usually found near the top floor of a cruise ship. The amount you'd earn is based largely on tips and commission.

Techinical & Deck Work

Even the ship's Captain falls in this category! Think safety, navigation of the ship and maintenance of equipment. This includes propulsion systems, air conditioning, power systems and entertainment support systems. For example watchkeeping officers ensure that the boat is safely navigated (and no Costa Concordia incidents!), there are plumbers, engineers and electricians.

Deckhands are the unsung heroes who do the grunt work of keep the ship running smoothly. In South Africa, entry-level deckhands typically earn salaries that range from ZAR 60,000 to ZAR 120,000 per year, depending on various factors such as the employer, geographic location, type of vessel, and the individual's qualifications and experience. Very roughly, the average salary range for deckhands is $25,000 to $50,000 per year (this can vary widely). . Deckhands who engage with passengers on cruise ships may receive tips or gratuities as well.

Deckhands are involved in:

  • maintaining the condition of the ship's decks in a pristine state (you will often see them washing down the decks early in the morning or latee at night)
  • handling cargo
  • assisting with intricate navigation maneuvers
  • securing the vessel during port arrivals, and releasing for departures
  • conducting safety drills
  • embarkation and disembarkation
  • operating tenders for shore excursions

By obtaining various certifications you may increase your chances of getting a job as a deckhand:

STCW Basic Safety Training

STCW Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats

Seafarer Medical Certificate:

Seaman's Book: Serving as your passport in the maritime world, this document is a testament to your seafaring credentials and employment history, often a prerequisite for securing maritime employment.

Radar Observer Certificate:

Vessel Security Awareness: equips you with the knowledge to recognize and respond to security threats onboard.

Small Boat Handling Certification: Particularly valuable if you'll be involved in tender operations or handling smaller vessels, this certification underscores your competence in maneuvering and managing smaller boats efficiently and safely.

Advanced firefighting, pollution prevention, or specialized skills like crane operation or forklift handling.

Captain & officers

We may have a good idea of what the captain does, but what does her living quarters look like? In this Tiktok video, Captain Kate McCue shows you her cabin on the Celebrity Edge cruise ship; complete with king size bed, couch, fridge, office and picture of St Nicholas (the patron Saint of travelling); her cabin is attached to the bridge of the ship to allow easy access in the event of emergencies.

@captainkatemccue CRIBS: Captain's Quarters, Suite Life Edition & tour du jour. You asked for it... #fyp #foryou #captainscabin #celebrityedge #cruise #captain #room ♬ Alone - Petit Biscuit

Human Resources

Yes, you even get HR staff on board the ship. They'll implement the shipping line's HR policies with the onboard staff. A bachelors degree in HR will help you get this spot, as well as any relevant experience.

Cruise ticket sales

Yes, they sell cruise tickets on cruise ships for future cruises (!), with staff anything anything from about USD2000/month.

Shoreside jobs

Cruise lines offer a wide variety of shoreside jobs:

Head office corporate jobs

Supplies management:

  • Fuel sourcing
Typically a cruise company will hire a procurement manager for fuel for each of the major ports from which its cruises start their voyages (e.g. Miamis). The procurement manager would be involved in engaging with: suppliers: to vet which suppliers to use suppliers: to negotiate rates for fuel suppliers: placing orders, keeping track of which orders have been fulfilled, managing payments. vessels: understanding their fuel needs, placing orders on behalf of them, and keeping track of whether the orders which have been made have actually been fulfilled. suppliers to build the logistics required to transport the fuel to the ships.
  • Ship maintenance jobs
  • Marketing jobs

If you're a social media influencer, cruise ship companies may want to hire you to help market their voyages and ships.

US Tiktoker @ericafromamerica , with 654,000 followers, has the world's greatest job: stress testing facilities on ships and vlogging about them on Tiktok. And in case you're wondering the "stress testing" is far from stressful - Erica gets to test the likes of spa facilities, cocktail drinks and crew parties. Here's a video she took of "A day in the life of working on board a cruise ship":

Working remotely on a ship

Many passengers take work with them on a cruise ship, and stay in touch with the shore via the ship's internet wifi connection. However, we now have a new genre of remote workers on ships; digital nomads who carry on with a full time remote job on ship whilst remaining on a continuous holiday. Virgin Voyages started advertising specifically for this in March 2024.

Life on board a cruise ship

There's no space to spare on a cruise ship. Your new home will be a small cabin at the bottom of the ship with no windows, and shared with up to 3 people who might snore at night. The cabin will typically have a shower, a TV and a storage cupboard. You'll be required to keep that cabin spick and span. The people in the cabin may not be the type of people you'd normally hang out with.

There are 3 main categories of staff: "crew", "staff" and "officers". Only the officers and staff may be in guest areas when they're not on on the job, and socialise with guests. However, you will be fired if you date guests, but you may date members of the crew (who are often younger, better looking and more vivacious), although an unwritten rule is that you may not date officers with a higher ranking.

Expect to work very hard! Crew members work 7 days a week, and about 11 hours per day (usually a maximum of 14 hours) - this is not a holiday. Ships purposely fly flags of convenience, and there are few workers' rights.

You are not cruising - even the term "cruising" is used to describe somebody who is slacking on the job. Having said that, if the job has been done properly, then your manager may give you some time off.

You'll be required to attend every safety drill.

On the upside:

Meals are free, as is the accommodation. Meals are eaten in the staff dining area (better known as the "crew mess"), and are buffet style. But if you want to drink soda, you'll have to pay for that.

The biggest expense of crew members on board is typically the wireless internet (e.g. USD12 will get you about 3 hours of internet a day).

There are regular crew events such as poker nights and karaoke.

Ships tend to follow the sunny weather, perfect for those who want to permanently be out of the cold and rain.

Being away from it all for so long and surrounded by people from all walks of life and all over the world, gives one a chance to reflect and put life into perspective.

If you ever have some free time you can hang out at the crew bar (much more reasonably priced than for passengers)...these occassions often spill over later into somebody's cabin...

Go to the crew's special jacuzzi/pool, play table tennis, pool or pump iron at the gym.

Crew parties, with free booze if you're lucky.

If you get free time, then sometimes the shore excursions are offered free to staff.

Cruise ship staff are male dominated (client-facing roles have more females), with about half the staff being younger than 30.

It can take up to 3 weeks to get used to life onboard. If, after 3 weeks, you're not enjoying it yet, then this probably is not the life for you. If you leave early then you'll have to pay for your own way back (if you finish your contract, usually the cruise line will then pay for your plane ticket back).

Requirements

What is required will vary immensely by the job; but to give you an idea, here's some of the information which you'll typically be asked for:

Are you 21 or more years old?

Do you have any tattoos or piercings which are publicly visible?

Do you have a criminal record?

You'll have to pass a medical examination.

You must have a valid passport.

Working as a Couple

Would you like to go work on a cruise ship together with your partner? The bad news is that this is difficult to get right; as for one thing each applicant is considered on her/his own merits.

A typical contract on a ship lasts for 6 to 8 months, depending on the operational requirement. During the contract you'd usually be on one specific ship (which you may well find visits the same destinations again and again during that period...so much for seeing the world!). You'd then get a couple of months leave, and if you've been up to standard you'll get invited back for another 6 to 8 month contract.

Disney Cruise Line Jobs

STCW Training

STCW stands for "Standards of Training, Certification, and Watchkeeping". STCW Basic Safety Training is a requirement for all seafaring crew; ie you'll need to do it if you are working on board a cruise ship.

In South Africa you can do STCW training at:

STC-SA, phone 021-418-5065 / 021-418-5062 (email [email protected] )

Grindrod Shipping Training Services, phone 031-302-7650 (email [email protected] )

Sea Certification SA, phone 031-360-7715 or 031-054-5471 (email [email protected] )

The STCW training takes about nine to eleven days. You will learn:

Personal safety and social responsibility

Personal survival techniques

Marine Fire Fighting

Seafarers Edentity Document (SID)

Most (185) countries require the crew of cruise and other ships to always possess a SID when they leave a ship or board a ship; this includes Mexico, Canada and the United States; The UN International Labour Organisations regulations require the crew to each have a SID since the 2nd May 2024. This regulation is inter alia to prevent human trafficking, where victims are sometimes disguised as being crew members.

Kenya had unfortunately not implemented the SID convention at the time of writing, although in 2022 they ratified it; placing Kenya crew members in danger of having their livelihood taken away from them. In Feb 2024 this led to an MSC cruise ship which had previously docked in Kenya, and was now docking in Mexico, having 18 of their crew (all Kenyans) being prevented from entering Mexico.

The Survival Centre at the Granger Bay Campus also offers a variety of short courses:

In early 2017, Michelle Linger from PE, was scammed out of R14,000; by a company purporting to be representing Princess Cruises Australia, in SA. She received an email informing her about the job, applied, and a while later received a contract which she signed and returned. She was then sent an AU Visa 187 application; and then was told that she had to pay R4000 for an Australian Foreign Intelligence Certificate. She was later told she had to pay another R10,000 for a residence visa. Their next step was to tell her that R20,000 was required to be deposited for living expenses, telling her that her travel documents would be cancelled if she didn't pay.
