What our guests say about Kim

7 day Vic Falls/ Kruger adventure!!!
I can’t say enough about Kim and how much she did for me and my daughter to plan her 7 day Safari to Victoria Falls and Kruger Park. For myself to be in the USA and my daughter doing a medical internship in Cape Town, South Africa and the time difference, Kim was amazing in every way. The time difference in itself was a challenge but Kim was so helpful and was very quick to respond to me and my daughter at crazy times to make her trip perfect! Kims communication and most importantly making sure my daughter was Safe traveling solo was superb! Everything was planned and she wanted for nothing. Her flights and transfers were perfect along with her accommodations! She loved all of her safaris and the people were all amazing to her! Thank you so much for making a Madison’s Safari memorable in every way !

This Travel Firm is Ready for You!
We have completed the preliminary reservations with this amazing travel firm. Thank God they exist! We would never have been able to figure out how to put the pieces of our trip to AFRICA together without them. They are patient, caring, detailed, and responsive to communications…something you expect, but do not always receive when service is involved. Connect with them via email if you are even thinking about going to Africa. Cheers!

Good To Know:
The Timbavati is in a low-risk malaria zone and there have only been very few cases of malaria reported.
However, the adage “prevention is the best cure” holds.
As the disease is spread by mosquitoes, it is important to use a strong repellent, which is provided in all the rooms and on the vehicles.
Wearing long trousers, a long-sleeved shirt, shoes, and socks are also helpful, especially at dawn and dusk when the mosquitoes are most active.
Please speak to your doctor who can advise and prescribe you anti-malaria tablets if necessary.
Medical Care:
We carry all essential first aid equipment and medicine at the lodge.
If you need anything more specific, there are pharmacies in Hoedspruit where many common medications, such as painkillers, are available over the counter.
Should you require medical attention during your stay, we are members of Africa SAFE-T, an organization that provides 24/7 medical assistance to lodges in a fast and efficient manner.
The voltage in South Africa is 220v, so 110v appliances will not work without a converter. However, we do provide hairdryers and adaptors (not converters) in every suite for your convenience.
Drones are STRICTLY PROHIBITED in the Timbavati Game Reserve, failure to comply with this rule will result in a heavy fine or arrest by reserve management.

Lighten up under a star-studded sky
There are just a few places in the world that make you feel like you have arrived at the perfect spot. Not a little too warm, a little too impersonal, or too noisy. No. Simply, perfect. Makanyi Private Game Lodge is such a place, which opens in July 2015. Owner Jessica Gold recently gave up her London city-life to combine her passions for hospitality, animals and South Africa, here, at Makanyi. The result is a stunning safari lodge. Heaven on earth for wine lovers; where a towering wine cellar packed with the most fruity, palate-arousing South African wines is waiting for you. Enjoy tantalizing cuisine, disappear in the soft mattress of your king size bed or shoot a game of pool. And the best part? It all takes place in an incredible setting; with the Timbavati Game Reserve as the perfect wildlife décor. Except that it is all really happening. Maybe you need to pinch yourself a couple of times the first day. That is alright, just don’t forget to enjoy every minute of it and wallow in this amazing African safari experience.
Makanyi Private Game Lodge is located in open, acacia woodlands in the southern Timbavati. Constructed of natural woods, thatch and stone, this contemporary property blends into picturesque environs and makes the most of the extensive views over a dam - a natural draw to the reserve’s wild inhabitants. The eight luxury chalets enjoy light, neutral colours and a stylish African flavour. Your private deck invites you to unwind, immersed in the sights and sounds of the wilderness. Two of the chalets are honeymoon suites and boast private plunge pools. Savour meals by the pool or on the deck and enjoy delicious dinners in the boma, under star-studded skies. In between game drives and bush walks, feel free to cool off in the central pool, work-out in the gym or even enjoy a rejuvenating massage.
Activities at Makanyi Lodge
How often do you get the chance to do some serious star gazing, looking at an astonishing Milky Way - completely free from light pollution? You will have the option here, at Makanyi Private Game Lodge. A ranger will point out the constellations of the Southern Hemisphere and satellites passing by. Of course there are thrilling game drives with experienced rangers, but the owners of Makanyi are also happy to organise other activities. Connect with Jessica, the sweetest hippo in the world, take a helicopter ride, whisper with the elephants, or whiz down a zip line (note that these activities must be booked in advance and paid for separately). Finish the day with a glass of some of the most dazzling South African red wines and we ensure you will be seeing stars in dreamland.

Guest reviews Makanyi Lodge
I would like to thank all of you for making us feel so at home in your spectacular environment. It really felt like we were all old friends getting together. Every person I came into contact with was so willing to share knowledge and information about the environment and everything that makes it so special. This experience has added an important chapter to the book of my life. It is very special to see so many people who are dedicated to protect and share our environment with others. Best of luck with all your conservation efforts. May it continue to add value to the lives of others. Tony van Niekerk
Our stay at Makanyi was magical. From the fantastic game viewing (that included seeing leopard, lions, elephants, rhino and buffalo on our first two drives) to the welcoming and accommodating staff, each aspect of our stay was clearly paid special attention to. The food was amazing and the rendition of the chef’s fish and chips for lunch and bunny chow starter prior to dinner in the boma was unlike any other I have ever had – a must for those with an appreciation of good food and its beautiful presentation. I can assure you that there was nothing plain about these meals. A beautiful turn down awaited us upon return from game drive in our room, with a special birthday message packed out in rose petals and leaves on my bed, for a birthday to come later in the week. A huge thank you to each staff member from management to cleaning ladies for a truly wonderful stay. Definitely a destination I would gladly return to! Lee Cooper

Good to know
The Timbavati is located in a low risk malaria zone and there have only been very few cases of malaria reported. However, the old adage “prevention is the best cure” holds true. As the disease is spread by mosquitoes, it is important to use a strong repellent, which is provided in all the rooms and on the vehicles. Wearing long trousers, a long-sleeved shirt, shoes and socks is also helpful, especially at dawn and dusk when the mosquitoes are most active. Please speak to your doctor who can advise and prescribe you anti-malaria tablets if necessary.
South Africa
South Africa is a country of incredible diversity on so many levels, both geographically and culturally. From its landscape which ranges from beautiful coastlines to deserts, bustling cities to wine regions, mountains to bushveld, there is so much to be seen. Tourists visit South Africa to enjoy famous cities like Cape Town where the famous Table Mountain can be found along with likes of the V & A Waterfront, Camps Bay and a penguin colony at Boulders Beach. Since South African wines are becoming increasingly popular throughout the world, a tour though one of many vineyards in the wine region is a must. Near our largest city Johannesburg, you will find the Cradle of Humankind a World Heritage Site which is one of the world’s richest fossil sites which marks the spot where scientists believe that humans originated from. The Eastern coastline runs along the warm Indian Ocean and has cities like Durban, Knysna, Hermanus which have more of a tropical climate. This region is excellent for surfing, scuba diving, fishing and whale watching. Inland there are a number of breath taking natural wonders to be seen, from the Drakensberg Mountains to the Blyde River Canyon being the third largest and greenest canyon in the world.
Finally, there is our beloved bush, although there are a few regions in South Africa where the iconic wildlife can be seen nothing compares to the world renowned Kruger National Park and its surrounding private reserves. An area which collectively covers over 2.4 million hectares in which animals roam freely, many have said that it has almost a spiritual aura to it and that they’ve never been the same since they’ve visited.
South Africa has a wonderful tapestry of mixed cultures from native tribes to British and Dutch descendants, which settled in the area years ago and influenced the country and culture. There are 11 official languages spoken, including English, Afrikaans, Sesotho, Setswana, Xhosa, Tsonga and Zulu.
Medical care
We carry all essential first aid equipment and medicine at the lodge. If you need anything more specific, there are pharmacies in Hoedspruit where many common medications, such as painkillers, are available over the counter. Should you require medical attention during your stay, we are members of Africa SAFE-T, an organization that provides 24/7 medical assistance to lodges in a fast and efficient manner.
The voltage in South Africa is 220v, so 110v appliances will not work without a converter. However, we do provide hairdryers and adaptors (not converters) in every suite for your convenience.
Game drives
For your convenience, here is a list of items we carry in each vehicle for game drives:
- Pair of Binoculars per couple
- Hand sanitizer
- Insect repellent
- Blanket per person
- Rain poncho per person
- Hot water bottles in winter
in your suite
- Mosquito repellent
- Extension cord / plug adaptors
- Complimentary Wi-Fi
- Nespresso coffee machine
- Tea making facilities
- Mosquito nets
Best Time to go on Safari
The below information is just a general indication of the different seasons we experience here at Makanyi Lodge. We have highly knowledgable guides and trackers that are able to “read” the African bush through tracks, animal sounds, behaviour, etc, giving our guests the best safari experience possible regardless of the seasons. And it has to be said that each season offers something different and spectacular in its own way.
The dry season is when the bush “thins out”, perhaps making it a little easier to find the wildlife. Permanent water supplies attract animals and the vegetation becomes thinned out, allowing for better viewing. The climate is comfortable with mild daytime temperatures and chilly morning and evening nights. One of our favourite things about the winter months is sitting around the fire in the boma or in the fire pit under the stars with a glass of wine.
Example of a Winter schedule
- 06:00 Wake-up call
- 06:15 Morning tea & coffee at the main lodge
- 06:30 Leave for morning safari
- 09:30 Back at the lodge for breakfast
- 13:00-14:00 Lunch at the main lodge
- 15:00 Afternoon tea & coffee
- 15:30 Leave for afternoon / evening safari
- 18:30 Arrive back from evening safari
- 19:00 Meet at the main lodge bar for drinks & dinner
Generally speaking, the sightings in the wet season can be slightly more challenging as the bush is thicker and more lush. That being said, the wildlife is indeed still there and the bush is spectacularly green, attracting the myriad of birds that fly down for the summer months. The spring time is also when many plains animals have their little ones, which is definitely a must see! Warmer evening temperatures make it a pleasure to sit out on the deck at night with a cool drink listening to the sounds of the bush.
Example of a Summer schedule:
- 05:30 Wake-up call
- 05:45 Morning tea & coffee at the main lodge
- 06:00 Leave for morning safari
- 09:00 Back at the lodge for breakfast
- 13:00-14:30 Lunch at the main lodge
- 16:00 Afternoon tea & coffee
- 16:30 Leave for afternoon / evening safari
- 19:30 Arrive back from evening safari
- 20:00 Meet at the main lodge bar for drinks & dinner
Drones are STRICTLY PROHIBITED in the Timbavati Game Reserve, failure to comply with this rule will result in a heavy fine or arrest by reserve management.

Our Readers' Favorite Safari Lodges in Africa in 2022
The best safari lodges, according to Travel + Leisure readers, go beyond the traditional game drive with a wide range of cultural experiences.
Note: If you’re looking for our most recent recommendations, check out the 2023 list of our favorite safari lodges in Africa.
For Travel + Leisure readers, the best safari lodges in Africa aren't necessarily traditional safari properties — though plenty of those did make this list. Take, for example, Wilderness Safaris Bisate Lodge — a luxurious base for tracking mountain gorillas in the cloud forest of Rwanda. It seems that this once-in-a-lifetime experience elevated guests' memories beyond those of Big Five safaris: the word amazing appears repeatedly in Bisate reviews.
Every year for our World's Best Awards survey, T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Hotels (including safari lodges) were rated on their facilities, location, service, food, and overall value. Properties were classified as city hotel, resort, or safari lodge based on their locations and amenities.
This year's World's Best list reveals a growing interest in nontraditional safaris. In addition to Bisate at the top spot, there's another Rwandan lodge, One&Only Nyungwe House (No. 3), where the highlights are tracking chimpanzees, bird-watching, and visiting a tea plantation. "A gorgeous property in an incredible location," said one voter. And there's a second gorilla-tracking property on the list: Bwindi Lodge (No. 10), in Uganda. "How special to stay at Bwindi Lodge," wrote one guest, "and be so well cared for when setting out to see the magnificent gorillas."
At No. 2, Gibb's Farm is "the most unique lodge of any kind in East Africa," claimed one reader. Overlooking Tanzania's Ngorongoro Crater, a protected area known for its incredible density of wildlife, the 17-cottage property offers activities around its coffee plantation and gardens, as well as bush walks from the property and wildlife drives in the crater. One guest loved that it was "fun for adults and kids." It's "an incredibly beautiful hotel," said another. "The food was amazing, and I loved the farm-to-table philosophy."
Classic safaris are still well represented, with guests favoring wildlife-rich areas such as the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater, the Masai Mara reserve in Kenya, and the South African Kruger National Park. As well as wildlife sightings and luxurious rooms, it was the people who made an impact on T+L readers. Of andBeyond Bateleur Camp (No. 6), in Kenya's Masai Mara, one reader said that "the guides are truly spectacular," while another described "warm, welcoming service."
1. Wilderness Safaris Bisate Lodge, Volcanoes National Park, Rwanda
On the edge of Volcanoes National Park in Rwanda, Bisate Lodge has six stylish and cozy villas, each overlooking the surrounding villages, forests, and misty mountain peaks. The main activity there is trekking into the national park to spend some time watching the mountain gorillas, but there are also opportunities to see golden monkeys, go hiking in the mountains, or visit the grave of renowned primatologist Dian Fossey. The staff are "amazing," said one reader, who added the food was "delicious," especially the homegrown vegetables. Another fan said staying at Bisate was "the absolute best...experience we have ever had. The food, service, and rooms were beyond amazing."
