No matter where you're going or how often you travel, luggage can make or break your trip. It helps with planning, packing, and staying organized while away — and sometimes determines whether you can bring back souvenirs. There's a wide range of checked suitcases, carry-on bags, duffels, weekenders, underseat bags, and backpacks on the market. Beyond that, you've got hardside and softside options with various organizational features. Amid what you might call the Golden Age of luggage, it can be hard to sift through your offerings.

To figure out what brands stand out from the rest, our Travel + Leisure team has tested more than 450 pieces of luggage ranging from carry-ons and checked suitcases to duffels, weekenders, garment bags, and other types of travel bags — assessing capacity, maneuverability, durability, and design through a series of tests and simulations. We've rolled suitcases through obstacle courses, threw them off tables, and hit them with baseball bats to see how well they'd perform in different travel scenarios like rough baggage handlers. We even recreated an airplane set in our New York City lab to lift bags into real overhead bins and underneath seats. We continue testing each bag in our real-life travels for a minimum of six months to make sure it stands up to planes, trains, automobiles, and anything else life may throw at it.

Our team has tested bags from many different brands, and below you'll find our current favorites. We will continue to update this article as we test even more luggage brands and new bags.

Best Overall

Backed by a 10-year warranty, Samsonite luggage is compact yet spacious, easy to maneuver, and exceptionally durable.

Because Samsonite has such a wide variety of designs and price points, some bags perform better than others.

After our most recent set of luggage tests, Samsonite has risen to the top as our favorite overall luggage brand. Samsonite luggage is generally lightweight and compact on the outside, with spacious interiors to maximize packing and a variety of styles to choose from. We especially love the brand for its versatility, with an impressive variety of bags at different price points so you can find whatever suits you whether you're looking for something affordable or luxurious.

The Samsonite Freeform Hardside Expandable Carry-on holds the spot as the best overall carry-on we've ever tested, while the Samsonite Winfield 2 Hardside takes the cake as our favorite checked suitcase . The Samsonite Bartlett Carry-on Softside Spinner earned perfect scores during our tests, impressing us as a solid softside suitcase for under $100. We also loved the organizational features — including multiple tech sleeves and included packing cubes — of the Samsonite Just Right Carry-on Spinner .

Almost all of the suitcases sustained hardly any damage after we hit them with a baseball bat and shoved them off a table. Samsonite luggage also maneuvers without a fuss, even on carpeted floors and gravel. Prices are more than reasonable, and while you'll have to make any returns within 30 days, the brand backs its products with a 10-year warranty.

Best Overall, Runner-up

The suitcases are durable, smooth-rolling, and spacious, and the brand has a generous 100-day return policy.

Some are harder to pull on two wheels, and the checked models are a bit heavy.

All Travelpro luggage we tested earned high scores for maneuverability, durability, capacity, and overall design. The brand's hardside and softside models were a hit in the T+L lab, and there are both carry-on and checked options with spacious interiors and expandable capacities. We also appreciated the various organizational features, like zipper panels, cross straps, and pockets.

With self-aligning spinner wheels and sturdy telescoping handles, Travelpro luggage is also easy to maneuver on hard floors, carpet, and even gravel (though some suitcases are slightly harder to roll on two wheels than four, especially when packed full). We particularly love the Travelpro Platinum Elite Carry-On Expandable Hardside Spinner with its sleek wheels and a textured handle that helps maintain a comfortable grip, and we think the Travelpro x Travel + Leisure Large Check-In Trunk Spinner makes a stylish investment piece if you're looking for something large, durable, and built to last. Even Travelpro's rolling garment bag impressed with its high capacity for the size. And, while the carry-ons are generally lightweight, one thing to note is that the larger checked models weigh almost twice as much when empty.

After shoving the suitcases off a table and whacking them with a baseball bat, we were pleasantly surprised by their durability. We only noticed a couple superficial marks — no scratches or dents, and nothing that wouldn't wipe clean. Travelpro offers a generous 100-day return policy and backs its luggage with warranties ranging from 10 years to a lifetime, though it can be difficult to connect with their customer service department to initiate returns or repair requests at times.

Best for Staying Organized

Beyond aesthetic appeal, Away flaunts plenty of pockets and compartments that keep all of your items in place.

The hardside suitcases might scratch under heavy use.

Away luggage has a minimalist-modern aesthetic and a sophisticated yet practical appeal. We're huge fans of the brand's suitcases and weekenders and particularly love The Everywhere Bag that's perfect for overnight trips, quick weekend adventures, and use as a personal item on longer trips. The checked baggage and hardside carry-on luggage pieces are light yet durable and easy to wipe clean. They didn't sustain any dents from our baseball bat tests, but there were a few scratches after we shoved them off a table. There are so many sizes to choose from, including one of our favorite trunks we've ever tested. We liked the dual main compartments, compression systems, expanders, and dirty laundry satchels of the roller bags.

The suitcases were a breeze to maneuver on their 360-degree spinner wheels, and carrying The Everywhere and The Garment Bag was comfortable with the padded shoulder straps. The Garment Bag also has interior padding that keeps all of your longer clothing items protected and helps to minimize wrinkles. Away is certainly not the cheapest luggage brand out there, but it's also far from the most expensive. Considering the 100-day return window, lifetime warranty, and stylish designs, we wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to pretty much any traveler.

A perfect choice for organized travelers, Paravel luggage has lots of added features and a sophisticated appeal.

The suitcases don't expand, and the lighter colors are prone to scuffing.

Perfect for organized travelers , Paravel takes the cake for additional features. We loved the dual compartments, many pockets, dividers, and removable laundry bags. While the suitcases don't expand, the compression pads make fitting everything a cinch. The Paravel Aviator Carry-on Plus was one of our top carry-on bags thanks to its sleek design, roomy interior that makes packing a breeze, and slick wheels that were great on every surface. We also love the super cute Paravel Mini Fold-up Backpack that earned perfect scores in every category, as well as our pick as best overall mini backpack . Not only does the bag fold up small so you can pack it in larger bags, but it also has a high capacity that can even fit a tablet, making it the perfect eye-catching style to wear on any vacation.

Most Paravel luggage pieces held up well during our durability tests, though the lighter-colored hardside models are prone to scuffing. The suitcases are also easy to pull, push, and roll over various flooring materials. What's more, Paravel luggage is undeniably stylish with a sophisticated appeal and a cool mid-century flair. Prices are somewhat steep, but in the end, we think it's worth the investment.

Most Spacious

The brand's large-capacity suitcases are impressively spacious yet lightweight, with built-in expanders and smooth-rolling wheels.

The hardside models are prone to scuffing.

Delsey is a go-to for large-capacity luggage . This brand carries both hardside and softside suitcases, including surprisingly spacious carry-ons and checked baggage in multiple sizes so you can find the best design for your needs. We were thrilled by how much they fit, noting that they could easily pack all items on our packing list with room to spare, even without expansion functions.

The suitcases maneuver well on their four spinner wheels, even over carpet, cracks, and bumps. Most models are also lightweight, so lifting them into an overhead bin is no problem. We checked the Chatelet Air 2.0 Carry-on and matching Chatelet Air 2.0 Medium Checked bag on four different long-haul international flights and each time they made it to the luggage carousel with only minor scuffs that were easily wiped away. We appreciate Delsey's accessible price points, plus the brand backs its luggage with warranties ranging from five to 10 years.

Best Colors

They come in both neutrals and so many colorful designs, including limited-edition options.

Some of the carry-ons are on the smaller size.

You’ll feel like a kid in a candy store with all of the colorful suitcase options from July — and if you tend to gravitate toward neutrals, July has those, too. After we tested over a dozen bags in our lab on on our airplane set, some of our favorites included the July Carry On (includes a portable charger), the July Checked Plus (the largest suitcase in July’s range), the July Checked Plus Light (a great lightweight option), and the July Trunk Set (a stylish, zipperless two-piece set).

We found the bags to be very durable against our baseball bat tests, although we noticed that the bags with aluminum corner bumpers tended to scuff more easily specifically on the corners. One of our favorite features was that some bags, including the Carry On Pro SnapSleeve , feature a multi-stop telescopic handle that you can adjust to 20 different heights, when many suitcase handles only stop at three heights.

Different bag styles are available in different colorways, and you can choose from delightful shades of blues, greens, pinks, reds, shadow lavender, plum, yellow, sand, and more, most of which will easily stand out on any baggage carousel. We did notice that some of the carry-ons tend to be much more spacious than others, so be sure to check the dimensions to find a size that will fit everything you need.

The Details: 100 day return policy | Limited lifetime warranty on luggage; 5-year warranty on soft bags and accessories; 2-year warranty on small leather goods

Best for Smaller Bags

Calpak luggage is compact yet still spacious enough to hold the essentials, and maneuvering it is a piece of cake.

The two-year warranty is substantially shorter than most other brands.

If you're looking for something you can stash in the overhead bin or under the seat in front of you, Calpak might be your best bet. We loved the duffles, backpacks, and suitcases with a particular appreciation for the Hue Mini Carry-on Luggage , our best overall underseat bag . We love that it glides smoothly, has a sturdy exterior, and can even fit a laptop, making it perfect for weekend getaways or even business trips.

Even when packed full, we found each Calpak suitcase to roll beautifully on both two wheels and four. We also like the Compakt Small Garment Bag , which is perfect to transport of one or two formal pieces inside a carry-on suitcase. The Stevyn Duffel Bag was very comfortable to tote with its shoulder strap and features a separate shoe compartment to keep your items clean if you're in the market for something smaller. Though the two-year warranty is shorter than most other brands, we think Calpak's prices are more than fair.

Best Budget

Amazon basics.

Amazon's luggage is not just budget-friendly but also lightweight and sturdy with unexpectedly large capacities.

Color options are limited, and the suitcases don't have USB ports or other smart features.

We can confidently tell you there's much more to love about Amazon Basics luggage than a budget-friendly price tag. The Amazon Basics Hardside Spinner also landed on our list of the best lightweight luggage after earning a perfect score in all categories. We especially love that even though it is a light suitcase, it's sturdy with wheels that easily maneuver over gravel and carpeting. More pockets would have been appreciated, but both the carry-on and checked models easily fit everything on our packing list without the expanders, which adds another 15 percent to the capacity.

The hardside suitcases have extra-thick thermoplastic shells that passed our durability tests with flying colors — no scratches or dents in sight. They were generally easy to maneuver, too, albeit a little more difficult on gravel. Color options are limited, and while most Amazon Basics carriers don't have TSA locks or smart features, the designs exceeded our expectations.

The Details: 30 day return policy | 3-year warranty

Best Splurge

This splurge-worthy luggage brand boasts expandable main compartments, ample pockets, impact-resistant exteriors, and smooth spinner wheels.

The price might be hard to justify, and the checked bags are somewhat heavy when empty.

If you want the crème de la crème of luggage, Tumi is where it's at . The suitcases and underseat bags fared better than the duffel we tested, but all in all, we were impressed. Our favorite by far is the Alpha International Expandable 4-wheeled Carry-on that looks compact but includes plenty of organizational compartments and even comes with its own removable garment bag. There was plenty of space to pack everything on our list in every Tumi bag, even without the expanders. This brand also stands out for its organizational, smart, and security features. We're talking ample pockets, removable garment bags, laptop sleeves, USB ports, lockable zippers, and TSA-approved locks.

Whether you go softside or hardside, you can count on reliable durability — we even jumped on the bags and rode on top of them and not one feature broke or dented. We observed virtually no scuffs or scratches after whacking the bags with a baseball bat. Tumi luggage is easy to maneuver, thanks to the spinner wheels, but bear in mind the checked sizes are pretty heavy when empty. If you can swing the steep price, we think the brand is an excellent choice for long trips, frequent fliers , and those who like to stay organized.

Most Durable

Briggs & riley.

With ballistic nylon or shock-absorbing polycarbonate exteriors, Briggs & Riley suitcases can really take a beating.

This is one of the more expensive brands, and the checked models are slightly heavy when empty.

The most durable luggage we tested comes from Briggs & Riley . The brand carries softside suitcases with ballistic nylon exteriors that resist premature wear and tear, as well as hardside models like the Sympatico Domestic Carry-on Expandable Spinner with shock-absorbing polycarbonate shells that promise to protect your cargo from getting crushed. We were impressed by how well they stood up to our shoves and bat swings — no dents or scratches to speak of.

Durability aside, Briggs & Riley suitcases roll effortlessly on hard floors and carpet, over bumps, and around tight corners. They also have decent capacities, many with built-in expanders. This is one of the more expensive luggage brands, but it's backed by a lifetime guarantee. We wouldn't be surprised if the suitcases last 10 or more years. Not only that, but there are a few options for remedying potential damage, including self-repair kits, authorized repair centers, or shipping back to Briggs & Riley for a tune-up.

Best Design

Thoughtfully designed, each Béis bag we tried comes with extra, often removable, features so you can customize your packing.

These are large bags and we had a hard time fitting some weekenders under airplane seats.

Shay Mitchell's luggage brand quickly won our hearts with each bag's thoughtful design, customizable inserts, and removable compartments. The bags are certainly large and can fit everything you need for a long vacation or quick weekend getaway — just be mindful that not all of the duffel-style bags will work as personal items. The Weekender is one of our favorites: like Mary Poppins' bag of wonders, this tote seems to expand as you pack it, fitting every item on our list.

When it comes to rolling bags, the 29-inch Large Check-in Roller is our best checked bag for organization . Similar to its weekenders, carry-on bags, and backpacks, Béis' check-in bag is huge and can fit everything you need and more. All of the Béis suitcases we tested also sported durable wheels that smoothly navigated different types of surfaces without gettings tuck, as well as easy-to-use handles that make running through the airport a breeze.

Other Luggage Brands We Liked

Even though these brands did not make our main list, they still have some worthwhile suitcases and bags to consider.

Monos :  Monos items have a nice, sleek look that are generally easy to maneuver. However, when we tested its large check-in suitcase, we found that it carried less items than some of its competitors.

Arlo Skye :  We love this brand's smooth design and stand-out colors, but considering the higher price-point, these bags don't roll quite as smoothly as some other brands.

Roam : We're big fans of Roam's The Check-in hardside suitcase as well as the designs of other Roam bags; however, after one-month of real-world travels, we found these luggage pieces to be more prone to scratching than other brands we tried.

The T+L team has tested more than 450 pieces of luggage, including carry-ons, checked suitcases, duffels, weekenders, garment bags, backpacks, and more in our New York City testing facility. We've tried at least six models from many top-rated brands, performing a range of assessments to evaluate the capacity, maneuverability, durability, design, and overall value. We weighed each bag, then packed it with enough clothes and personal items to get through a four-day trip (more for the larger checked bags).

To see how the luggage would perform in a real-life environment, we rolled them on different flooring materials, across gravel and carpets, over bumps, and around corners. We also threw each piece off a table and whacked it a few times with a metal baseball bat to test for potential wear and tear and how prone it was to scratching or denting. In addition, we recreated an airplane set in our lab, where we hoisted the carry-on suitcases into real overhead bins and stuffed them underneath seats to see how easy they were to lift and how portable they felt.

After lab testing, each suitcase and bag was sent out for real-world testing, and our T+L editors brought the bags on vacations, weekend trips, and overnighters. To test each bag's true durability, convenience, and longevity, we tested each bag on planes, trains, buses, and even cruise ships, checking in after one month, three months, and six months to give our feedback. Considering standout features, size, and price, we created categorized ranked lists of every luggage piece we tested. The luggage brands with the highest average ratings were ultimately chosen for this list of our favorites, which we will continue to update as we test even more luggage.

How We Chose These Brands

The T+L team tested at least six bags per brand on our winners list to ensure a broad sample size. We tested underseat luggage , checked luggage, and carry-on luggage as well as duffel bags, garment bags, and backpacks, and gave each individual bag a score based on its capacity, design, durability, maneuverability, and overall value.

Next, we created rankings based on the total average scores of all the bags we tested for that brand. We also thoroughly read through all of the tester insights on each luggage item from these three tests to evaluate each bag's details and features. Finally, we determined whether or not we would recommend a bag and its overall brand.

Tips for Buying Luggage

Get to know the brand.

When it comes to researching a new luggage brand, you're already well on your way. For more information on a specific brand, you can check out its website, read customer reviews on products you like, or even take a peek at the items in person. Buying new luggage (whether a singular piece or luggage set ) can be a pricey investment, so be sure you like a brand's style, warranty options, and overall quality before you make that purchase. This is especially important when it comes to splurging on luxury luggage pieces .

Know your organizational preferences

Material and size are important, but some of the best luggage brands stand out for their organizational features. This may include dual main compartments, various pockets, a shoe separator, zippered sections, a toiletry bag , a removable laundry bag, a garment bag, a laptop sleeve, and maybe even a USB port with a power bank pouch — some Arlo Skye luggage includes the power bank itself. While it's not a top priority for all travelers, this can make packing and accessing your belongings much easier.

Look for durability

The best luggage stands up to wear and tear for several years to come. Both softside and hardside luggage options can be very durable. It's really a matter of whether you want to safeguard your packed items from getting crushed or protect the exterior of the suitcase from superficial blemishes (though many softside and hardside models we tested check all the boxes).

Think about mobility

You should also think about maneuverability. When you're running into the airport to check your bags before heading to security, you'll want a suitcase that doesn't hold you back. Four-wheel spinner suitcases tend to be easier to pull and push over different surfaces compared to suitcases with just two wheels, and they're even better if they have a sturdy telescoping handle. Grab handles and padded straps are ideal for other types of luggage, and a lightweight design will make your travel experience much easier.

Frequently Asked Questions

You'll see a range of hardside and softside models when browsing luggage, and many of the best brands offer both. What you purchase really comes down to personal preference. Some people appreciate how crush-resistant hardside suitcases protect their belongings. They're also easy to wipe clean and have a sleek, modern appearance.

On the other hand, softside suitcases are typically (but not always) lighter in weight and more flexible, so you can often pack more in them. After testing both types, we can tell you they're often just as durable as hardside options, and they won't dent like hardside bags do. Although a textile exterior might be trickier to clean, it can be better at concealing scuffs and dirt. Regardless of the type of luggage, you can find several effective products to clean suitcases available.

Size limits for carry-on luggage vary among airlines . That said, most allow suitcases no larger than 24 inches tall, 16 inches wide, and 10 inches deep. Some are a little more strict, with limits set around 22 x 14 x 9 inches. Keep this in mind if your suitcase has an expander, as the additional inch or two could put it over the allowed size limit. We recommend checking the airline's website if you're not sure whether your luggage will pass as a carry-on.

Samsonite Omni PC 3-Piece Set (20/24/28) Hardside Spinner

Best Luggage Brands for The Money: Samsonite

Family travel and lifestyle blogger, Erin Bender from Explore with Erin , shares why Samsonite ranks on her list of the top luggage brands for family traveling.

“We chose 4-wheeler luggage. Not only is it great to push with one finger, but the kids can ride on it, too, which saves us from losing them in the airport. Go with the Samsonite with latch closures ; bags with zips break too easily and fragile pieces are in better care in a hard case.”

Sarah-Jane Begonja with Chasing the Donkey also agrees that Samsonite is one of the best luggage brands. “My arthritic spine and fingers always appreciate my 4-wheeler. It rolls along easier and I’ve been known to use it to stack my bottles of booze on top.”

The Samsonite Omni Collection is a popular hardside luggage which is available in a variety of colorful hues perfectly suited for a family. Buy it here!

Samsonite Winfield 3-Piece (20/24/28) Suitcase Set

Choosing a lightweight suitcase enables you to pack more without surpassing airline weight restrictions. Four spinner wheels come in handy as you maneuver your bag through the airport.

Planet Lew says: “I have a set of Samsonite 4-wheel spinners. The smallest is cabin size and I use it for up to week-long trips. The middle size is good if I need to take more stuff, and the largest is a bit ridiculous.”

Time and time again, travelers agree that Samsonite is number one on the list of top luggage brands, making it one of the most consistent in terms of suitcase recommendations. It seems as travelers particularly like their sets similar to the Winfield 3-piece set , shown above.

These good looking hardside suitcases are lightweight and easy to travel with. The wheels are smooth and are durable enough to last over the years. As a bonus, this set is water-resistant. Buy it here!

It was big enough to carry all of my products for my traveling pop-up events and spacious enough to fit a week of wardrobe for New York fashion week. Since I pretty much live in my suitcase, I am super happy!”

American Tourister offers a balance between quality and price. Osprey is one of our all-time favorite travel brands and we’ve written many articles about this brand, which you can read about here .

If you’re planning to travel extensively, go on a round-the-world backpacking trip, or jetset full-time, this is the absolute top luggage brand to securely house your belongings. Other travelers agree:

Jacquie Whitt, the co-founder of Adios Adventure , has been using the Osprey Sojourn ( currently sold out ) bag for the past five or six years, and it tops her list of suitcase recommendations.  “It features wheels as well as hidden shoulder straps, should I be in a place without roads. One of the reasons I like Osprey is their guarantee. My first bag wore out after four years of traveling around South America and when I took it in for repair, they replaced it with a new bag.”

Osprey Farpoint 55 Travel Backpack

As a long-term traveler, I couldn’t imagine traveling with any other brand. I’ve owned the Farpoint Backpack , Meridian Convertible  and most recently the Osprey Ozone .

My hardside Samsonite bag cracked on this last trip (air, bus, ferry, etc..) This one replaced a Travelpro softside that had one of its spinner wheels crack off. Now that I’m flying business class and have a higher weight limit, I am going back to my heavy Pathfinder softsider that is indestructible.

Sharon Kyhl

Thanks for the great info!

Susan

I’ve been in search of the perfect bag for years, and this article is a great help!

Karen

Surprised Away luggage is not among the best. Affordable, well-designed, hard-sided luggage. My travel agent swears by them.

Tabitha DePaolo

I love the recommendations and reviews all gathered in one spot. I’d like to invest in a great carry-on suitcase, but it is so overwhelming the options and features, especially when spread across multiple sites. Having them all gathered here along with reviews for each option makes comparison so much easier!

Irene Torres

I need to replace my carry on, and this article is full of great ideas for a new suitcase. Thank you!

Erin LePage

Have you reviewed July carry on?

LR

This was a great informational post. When we had to replace our luggage, I started here and it saved me so much time.

Julie

What a great list of suitcases that also look stylish. I love hard sided suitcases for added security of not having exterior pockets to worry about pickpocketers.

Sherry K.

Really enjoy your emails and your website, very informative and helpful. I started shopping for a new suitcase some time ago but wasn’t sure what brand(s) was the best value (sturdy, long-lasting, etc.). Now I have an idea where to start! Thank you!

Denise Pace

I ordered the Travel Pro Maxlite carryon per TFG recommendations along with numerous other travel clothing and accessories. I feel less stress and so, so much more prepared for traveling now.

I’m heading to Italy in 4 days and this information was so useful in deciding on day packs to tennis shoes

CarolSue Ayala

I bought a lightweight TravelPro which I learned about on this site. My husband and I traveled to 50 countries in 5 years (BC-Before Covid). This carry-on bag served me well. Since Covid we have been living in Puerto Vallarta, Mexico, which is lovely but very hot this time of year. To scratch the travel itch again, we recently drove to the central highlands and are now in San Miguel deAllende, an exquisite town! The crazy thing about this is my packing. I brought everything I could ever want with me, including the kitchen sink, as they say. So many clothes, a dozen pairs of shoes, dresses, pants, tops, jewelry, electronics, you name it. You know what I wear? The same clothes I would have brought in just my carry-on! (I’m embarrassing myself with this story.)

Penny

Great post! Thanks so much.

Vickiy

I so appreciate this comprehensive review. I am finally going to buy new luggage based on this fabulous review!

Gail Clark

Every one of these bags, when I look on the Amazon site, indicate from user comments that with the handle and the wheels, they exceed the size limits for American Airlines. I am at a loss. I cannot seem to find a carryon that I can travel carryon only that is the allowable size.

Hi Gail, thank you for your question. I am not sure of the extant size dimensions for American Airlines, but you may find a carryon which meets the requirements here: https://www.travelfashiongirl.com/best-carry-on-suitcases-for-traveling-europe/ I would also highly recommend that you join TFG’s free facebook community and post your question there: https://www.facebook.com/groups/travelfashiongirls/ Its a fabulous group of helpful female travelers that have the best advice and recommendations to share and I am sure one our amazing readers would be able to help. Hope this helps you on your search for a new suitcase! ?

Crystal

Great list (as usual). I would also add Away Travel. I have used Away exclusively for years across four continents for business and family travel and it has never failed me. Definitely holy grail along with my Amazon Basics and Travel Fashion Girl packing cubes. By the way I really love my TFG packing cubes for the kids things on family trips!

Hi Crystal, thank you for sharing your recommendation of luggage with us! Yay, so happy to hear you love your packing cubes!!! ?? Happy travels!

Joan

Great reading however spend half my time googling to convert your weights and measures into metric. Spoils my read but like neverthe less.

Clare Seche

Love your tips! My question: I’m going on my first trip to Europe, and the travel company states that the checked luggage cannot be bigger than 62″ Length x Width x Height and cannot weigh more than 23kg/50lbs. Where do I find one with those specific criteria?

Hi Clare, thank you for your lovely comment, so pleased you enjoy the blog!! Have a look at this article, particularly have a look at the section about luggage size: https://www.travelfashiongirl.com/suitcase-101-step-by-step-guide-to-choosing-the-right-travel-luggage/ You may also find this article useful: https://www.travelfashiongirl.com/baggage-allowance-how-to-pack/ Hope this helps! Dilemma? Eagle Creek or Osprey? Seeking robust lightweight bags for family of 3 (girl aged 10) – thought perhaps convertible might be the way to go? As can use any way that best suits …are straps removable, put in when required etc

Hi Sonya, have a look at this post for some help in buying new luggage: https://www.travelfashiongirl.com/suitcase-101-step-by-step-guide-to-choosing-the-right-travel-luggage/ For TFG’s review of the osprey bags, have a look a this: https://www.travelfashiongirl.com/best-osprey-backpacks/ Hope this helps! 🙂

Valerie

Tumi used to be excellent, it’s not the case anymore, their products are not resistant enough for people who travel a lot. Their handles break (got it repaired twice, each time Tumi charged us $150 dollars, for suitcase that are a few years old). The seam are taking some beatings. Now they refuse to change the handle because the luggage line is discontinued. We are talking about the handle only! I don’t believe they are up to their reputation anymore. We decided to switch brands, we will review your article with great care before making our choice. Thank you.

Hi Valerie, thank you for sharing your review of the Tumi luggage brand with us! 🙂

Lyn

Love my Lipault 22 inch carry on with the matching 17 in cabin bag. I have been to Europe 9 times with this luggage. Holds up well and I can get a lot of clothes in it!,

Linda

Anyone try the RImowa electronic ?

Paula G Tupper

I bought a Ricardo Sausalito Super Light set for my first trip to Europe. I am elderly AND disabled, so it had to be luggage that I could manage by myself in certain instances. It was perfect, easy to lift, easy to wheel, and with the bright print easy to spot quickly on luggage carousels. They had the proper smaller carryon size for European airlines, and the pieces all piggybacked easily. I loved them, still use them, and recommend them to my friends.

alex

Love that brand, thanks Paula!

Gudrun

Of course one can fit A LOT into those little suitcases but the issue is the severe weight restrictions at least in the EU. They won`t allow bags over 7 kg as carry on and airport personell is very attentive to enforce that rule. they usually weigh the bags before you enter security and are very strict if the bag is overweight.

Good point Gudrun, try one of these bags instead: https://www.travelfashiongirl.com/best-lightweight-luggage/

Gladys

Where I can buy this ? Do you have online stores?

Hi Gladys, you can click on any of the items to be directed to the online store. Thanks!

Adia

What about the swiss luggage bag? Is it good?

alex

Great brand as well Adia!

NutmegsMom

One bag, various companies: Mulholland Brothers Small Hippo Duffel, Tortuga Air, Whipping Post Rolltop Backpack, Rough & Tumble 1904, Best Made Company Kevlar Gear Bag. If my trip is gear-intensive for work, I’ll use the larger bags. Otherwise I pack very light using the backpacks.

Thanks for the recommendations!

Aniket Anand

I use American Tourister and according to me this is amazing.

Travel Fashion Girl

Also one of our favorites 🙂

Telicia

Briggs & Riley is AWESOME. You can’t beat the lifetime warranty. The Exchange 20 Convertible Duffle is my go to! It is small enough for ALL budget airlines. I prefer a backpack if I’ll be moving around a lot during the trip. It was perfect for 10 days in Belize an my 10 day trip to Italy and Germany. I love that there are no assigned sections so it maximizes the space inside.

Also they go on sale often.

Thanks for sharing Telicia! Glad you’ve found one perfect for your travels!

Rachel

That’s a great article. I prefer Samsonite, as they tend to be more durable and functional than the average luggage. Brigs and Riley are also pretty good, albeit slightly more expensive.

Thanks Rachel 🙂 Glad you like it!

June Merritt

I’m looking for VERY lightweight luggage. Flying across the country for 2 weeks and I’m NOT a light-packer, so if the luggage is light perhaps I can get more clothes in there.

Hi June 🙂 I totally agree, as I think lightweight luggage would be a great help for you! Check out this guide to choosing the right luggage for some more help http://bit.ly/1YsZd7w

Michael

Fascinating article. I appreciate the various points of view!!! Personally, I travel in South America, A LOT–primarily by bus. LOL So, I’m perhaps somewhat outside the “norm” of most travelers. Sidewalks, say, when they exist, are like minefields. So, rollers/wheels are problematic, though INSIDE a bus station, you’re typically in business. LOL Also, I shy away from “nicer looking” luggage. I travel with “everyday” folks, folks who can’t afford the airfare, and so travel for 2 nights and 3 days, say, from Lima to Santiago by bus. (Come to think of it, I can’t afford the airfare either!!! LOL) Anyway, I’m entertaining the idea of something like a rolling duffle now. Traveling throughout Chile, Peru, Ecuador, etc. is TOUGH–on luggage and travelers alike. Thank you! (There’s nothing quite like folks who have BEEN THERE and used the product you’re researching.)

Thanks for your feedback Michael! 100% agree for South America a backpack or wheeled suitcase would be best.

Sal

I am a huge fan of Crumpler luggage & bags because they’ve thought of everything to do with travel. Love the bonus shoe bags, security and expandable features most. Am loving this whole site and appreciate your advice.

Thanks for the suggestion Sal! Glad you love the site 🙂

Adina Moodie

I have been traveling for years and have been using different brands of luggages. My favorite set of luggages are Monos luggage. They are made with German Makrolon polycarbonate – a lightweight, aerospace-grade material that is nearly impossible to break. They are very light and the whisper-quiet 360º spinner wheels glide effortlessly.

Mary

Patagonia MLC. Soft sided. Has backpack straps.

Great choice!

Carrie

This list is not very helpful without listing weights for each product. I’ve been tempted before by brands that sound great, then when you look at their suitcases, they come in at like 10 pounds. No thanks.

Thanks for your feedback Carrie, Next time I do these types of interviews I’ll make sure to ask the travelers this question. Thanks again!

Filip Ameely

Hard sided backpacks might be the best fit who seeks a bag that doesn’t bulge out even if loaded full. Unfortunately they always come with extra pounds. If you really want light weight you have to count some extra bucks 🙁

Lightweight bags are actually many times cheaper because they have less bells and whistles. Check out Delsey bags 🙂

Juanita

I’m constantly hearing great things about Briggs & Riley, so much so that (even though I’ve never bought one of their cases) I find myself recommending it to others whole heartedly. You just don’t hear bad things about their company! And that has to amount for something.

Eagle Creak and Samsonite seem to do their job pretty well also, but I’m on the fence when it comes to Tumi. They get about as many rave reviews as they do harsh ones so I don’t really know…

Hi Juanita! It sounds like your best bet is to go with Brigs and Riley since it has similar price points to TUMI but better reviews. You can find some great deals right now during the holidays and the after Christmas sales too. Thanks for reading!

Rhonda L Berglas

I bought the travel pro carryon about 8 years ago. It has served me well, and held up great. It’s a great value for the money, and although it’s not the lightest, u can manage it on my own.

Shop all luggage at Samsonite

When it comes to value, Samsonite makes excellent luggage at some of the best prices, which is why we named it our top overall pick for the best carry-on . Samsonite offers numerous options for roller bags, including both hard-side and soft-side carry-ons and checked luggage, as well as wheeled underseat bags and even roller duffels.

Samsonite also sells several two- and three-piece sets if you want to pair small, medium, and large roller bags together. In addition to traditional roller luggage, Samsonite also offers classic backpacks, wheeled backpacks, duffels, briefcases, wallets, dop kits, and more. There are even some cool wheeled garment bags that can fit under your seat and will fit far more than your typical folding or hanging garment bag. I've owned a Samsonite bag for over three years now and it's held up incredibly well.

Shop all luggage at Away

Away has multiple options for roller luggage, including hard-sided, expandable, and aluminum. Bags are available in both neutral hues and bright, eye-catching colors.

Away's stand-out feature used to be the removable battery pack for charging your electronics on the go, which was previously available as an add-on to its carry-on bags. While the brand retired that feature, we still think its bags have thoughtful extras like in-bag compression, built-in TSA-approved locks, and a removable washable lining.

In addition to roller bags, the brand also a range of other bags and travel accessories, including backpacks, duffels, pet carriers, totes, packing cubes, and more. I've personally owned Away luggage for years and can attest to its durability and practicality.

Shop all luggage at Travelpro

Travelpro mostly makes soft-side luggage and rightfully earned its spot as our top pick for the best soft-sided carry-on . I personally love the clear attention to detail that comes with a Travelpro bag, from the whisper-quiet spinner wheels to the tear-resistant material and sturdy buckles.

In addition to rolling luggage, Travelpro has options for underseat bags (rolling and not), toiletry bags, backpacks, foldable duffels, garment bags (which often come included with a carry-on), luggage tags, laptop bags, and more.

Monos is a newer start-up that doesn't have as many suitcase options as the other luggage brands on our list, but it's worth mentioning since it's one of the best suitcases on the market with a hard front pocket that gives you an easy place to safely store laptops and extras. Monos suitcases are durable, come in an array of colors, and are well-priced. Plus, all of the luggage comes with a 100-day trial period and a limited lifetime warranty. The same brand also makes some of our favorite durable packing cubes .

Currently, Monos has two sizes of carry-on that either come with a front pocket or not depending on your preferences, plus a medium-sized roller bag and a checked luggage option. Monos also make a backpack, duffel, and folio kit.

Shop all luggage at American Tourister

Many of American Tourister's carry-ons start under $100, and while they may not last you a lifetime, they certainly won't break down anytime soon either. The hard-sided bags are made from a sturdy ABS material, and the spinner wheels aren't quite as high-end as premium options but still easily roll on most surfaces. While these suitcases don't come with tons of extras (be aware that some don't come with built-in TSA locks), the interiors are still thoughtfully designed for easy packing.

American Tourister has numerous roller bag options in varying sizes, including both hard-sided and soft-sided suitcases. There is also a line of Disney luggage that kids especially might love. While there are also some nice wheeled underseat bags, American Tourister hasn't branched out much from classic roller bags, so you'll want to look elsewhere if a duffel or weekender bag is more your aim.

Shop all luggage at Rimowa

When it comes to high-end luggage, Rimowa is a consistent standout that uses premium materials to create long-lasting and recognizable pieces. Its ribbed aluminum luggage, which comes in every color from simple silver to a cherry red, is particularly popular — though it will cost you upwards of $1,000. However, thanks to heavy-duty construction that still manages to be lightweight, the rollers might be worth it if budget isn't an issue for you.

For a slightly more cost-effective (though still pricey) option, I particularly love the Essential Lite collection, which I named the best high-end hard-side carry-on thanks to the fact that it's incredibly durable but weighs less than five pounds. Unfortunately, if you're a fan of soft-sided suitcases, Rimowa is not the brand for you, and there aren't as many accessories available as some other brands.

Shop all luggage at Briggs & Riley

We named Briggs & Riley our top pick for the best high-end soft-side carry-on. I particularly like the super-smart interior features that truly elevate these suitcases, from a special CX compression-expansion system that increases packing capacity by 25%, to making sure the adjustable handle is entirely on the outside of the bag so no packing room is lost to the poles. These suitcases are certainly investment pieces, but they're built to last and also come with a lifetime warranty.

While I find the soft-sided bags to be some of Briggs & Riley's best options, there are also some nice hard-sided carry-ons and checked bags for those who prefer to go that route. In addition to roller bags, Briggs & Riley also makes backpacks, duffels, weekends, laptop bags, and travel accessories of all types, including packing cubes, bag ID tags, laundry bags, and more.

Shop all luggage at Bric's

Bric's is probably best known for its high-end Bellagio collection of luggage, both recognizable and revered for its durable, but ultra-light polycarbonate exterior with leather trim that gives it a nostalgic trunk feel. It's the little details that set this Italian brand apart, including Hinomoto wheels, matching interior linings, and premium zippers. That's why you've likely seen a luxury travel guru wheeling this bag through the airport, or, if you're an eagle-eyed "Schitt's Creek" fan, may have caught Alexis Rose using this collection to pack up her belongings.

However, for those not ready to spend $600 on a carry-on, Bric's also has several more affordable suitcases in both hard-sided and soft-sided options. The Capri collection features striking exterior detailing in a wide range of colors at a mid-tier price point, while B/Y Zeus will appear to soft-sided fans.

The brand also has a sale section where you can sometimes score premium collections that typically start at $650 or more for under $200.

Shop all luggage at Tumi

Like Rimowa, Tumi luggage pieces are an investment. But they're a worthy one since these suitcases will likely last you years, if not decades. With numerous options of all sizes for both hard-sided and soft-sided suitcases, Tumi has bags to suit just about all tastes.

Its well-thought-out suitcases include premium spinner wheels, heavy-duty zippers, scratch- and tear-resistant exteriors, and well-designed interiors that help travelers maximize every last inch of space. In addition to roller luggage, Tumi is also well known for its premium totes and briefcases, and also makes travel wallets, backpacks, duffels, care kits, travel umbrellas, and more.

Shop all luggage at Victorinox

Victorinox luggage falls in the mid- to high-tier of pricing but its durability makes it a good value choice. The brand also frequently has luggage on sale during big shopping holidays when you can score suitcases for less. As you might expect from a Swiss Army company, the interiors of most suitcases are also thoughtfully designed to maximize packing space.

Victorinox offers both hard-sided and soft-sided roller bags of numerous sizes including classic carry-ons, checked bags, medium-sized suitcases, and smaller wheeled underseat bags that can fit laptops and accessories. Beyond roller bags, Victorinox also offers briefcases, duffels, backpacks, totes, toiletry kits, garment bags, and more.

Shop all luggage at Delsey

If you like the look of Bric's cream suitcases with leather trim, you may also want to consider Delsey's Chatelet line of hard-sided luggage. While these suitcases start around the same price as Bric's, they can be found on sale more frequently, often for half the price. Delsey's Titanium suitcases are also a fan-favorite option since they are ultra-lightweight but incredibly durable.

Delsey has numerous options for roller bags for domestic and international travel in both hard-sided and soft-sided variations (though more hard-sided), as well as several luggage sets. It even has an eco-friendly line of laptop bags and duffels using recycled materials.

Is hard-sided or soft-sided luggage better?

There are pros and cons to each. In general, hard-sided luggage offers more protection for your belongings than soft-sided luggage.

For checked bags, you're best bet is hard-sided luggage, since it can withstand tough handling and having other items stacked on top. Soft-sided luggage may be a good option if you want more flexibility, since fabric-made suitcases have a lot more give. Soft-sided pieces are a good option for carry-ons because they can flex and compress to fit into tight overhead bins.

What size luggage should I buy?

We think it's best to start with a carry-on size, since it offers the most flexibility, whether you want to keep it in the cabin or check it. Most US airlines cap carry-on size at 22 inches long, 14 inches wide and 9 inches high, including handles and wheels.

When it comes to buying a checked bag, you'll want something between 25 and 29 inches long. Airlines typically charge a fixed fee for checked bags up to a certain weight, so it may be tempting to think a bigger suitcase is always better. However, bigger pieces of luggage come with more weight of their own, don't protect your items well when they're underpacked, and encourage overpacking, which can lead to higher baggage fees (or the dreaded airport floor repacking).

The 10 Best Delsey Luggage Items of 2024

Affordable and durable pieces

We independently evaluate all recommended products and services. If you click on links we provide, we may receive compensation. Learn more .

There’s a lot to love about Delsey Luggage. Since 1946, the French company has made durable and practical suitcases for people to use on weekend road trips and long-haul journeys alike. As longtime luggage aficionados, we know Delsey knows how to do it all when it comes to meeting our baggage expectations.

With more than 50 patents and awards, the brand goes the extra mile to use high-quality materials, innovate its designs, and deliver it all at prices that won’t break the bank. Personally, we also love the interiors of Delsey’s luggage, which always feature smart layouts to help you stay organized (and so you can avoid "shoot, where is my USB charger?" moments when you check into your hotel room). Their offerings are available in a host of fashionable colors and basic and neutral shades, too. We researched the best options from the brand, considering carry-on versus checked, style, and softshell vs. hardshell options.

Built to last

Solid internal organization

Some complain of zipper issues

Locks are upside down

The Delsey Helium Aero Hardside Luggage is made from 100 percent polycarbonate, making it ultra-lightweight and exceptionally resilient against cracks and fractures. It also looks great, with a high-gloss finish in a range of colors, including brushed charcoal, cobalt blue, and emerald green. At 29 inches, it offers the maximum packing space allowed by most airlines. Despite its large size, it exerts zero pressure on your arm and shoulder thanks to four multi-directional double-spinner wheels.

The wheels are paired with an industrial-grade aluminum handle, which features a comfortable grip and two different height settings. The bag opens like a book into two separate compartments. A selection of pockets, tie-down straps, and a zippered divider help to keep your belongings organized, while extra souvenirs are accommodated by the case’s 2-inch expansion feature. Best of all, you can rest easy knowing that your packing is kept secure by the integrated, three-digit TSA lock. The suitcase also comes with a 10-year warranty. If you prefer a smaller option, the Delsey Aero is available in different sizes, including a 19-inch carry-on version .

Size: (Interior) 29 x 19.5 x 12.5 inches, (exterior) 31.75 x 20.75 x 12.75 inches | Weight: 12.5 pounds | Material: Polycarbonate | Expandable: Yes

Not super lightweight

The Delsey Paris Chatelet Hard+ 28-inch Spinner is as beautiful as it is unique. Made from 100 percent virgin polycarbonate, it’s available in chocolate or champagne, with stylish faux leather accents. The interior is just as appealing, thanks to a luxurious soft-touch crimson lining. The case splits into two halves—one with tie-down straps and another with a zippered mesh divider. Keep your fashion pieces looking fresh using the complimentary garment bags and hanger. Practical highlights include an integrated TSA lock, an extendable pull handle, and four super-silent double-spinner wheels. The two front wheels are equipped with a convenient button-operated braking system.

Multiple pockets for organization

Zipper can be difficult when full

A solid checked suitcase is an essential part of any traveler's collection. You may not interact with it as much as a carry-on piece, but its job of protecting a large quantity of your belongings through airplane luggage holds and potentially rough handling is just as important.

While hardshell cases are becoming increasingly popular, in our experience, a well-made softside model has several benefits. First, you'll get more leeway with packing as the soft sides are more forgiving, and the Helium DLX offers an additional 2 inches of space in a pinch. And durability is a factor Delsey baked in with lightweight DuraTec fabric, which tends to roll with the punches baggage handling can serve out.

Best Carry-On

Some pockets would be nice

Light, tough, and easy on the eyes, there are several accolades we could give to the Cruise 3.0. The textured polycarbonate shell protects against bumps and dings, and the dual spinner wheels glide effortlessly through airports and bus stations. Three grab handles make lifting in and out of overhead bins quick and easy. No need to worry about a dead battery thanks to a USB port and a power bank sleeve. The internal organization is functional and unfussy, with a mesh divider and elastic compression straps.

Size: 22.75 x 15 x 10 inches | Weight: 7.4 pounds | Material: Polycarbonate | Expandable: Yes

Best Underseater

Expensive for size

Small and chic, this compact case holds everything you want to have easily accessible to you onboard. Roll it through the airport using the telescopic handle, unzip the smart band to stack it on top of a larger case, or carry it like a tote (don't worry, it's light enough). The stylish exterior is exactly what we've come to expect from Delsey, plus it's made of recycled water bottles with vegan leather accents. On the inside, a treated lining keeps things smelling fresh, while two elastic pockets and a set of compression straps boost organization options.

Best Tote Bag

Limited use

On the pricier side

Pair your Delsey Paris luggage with the brand's shoulder bag, the Chatelet Soft Air. As part of Delsey's iconic Chatelet Hardside collection, this bag makes for a chic yet practical personal item for traveling. It's made of water-resistant chevron polyester, with vegan leather trims and a soft deluxe interior for high-quality construction. It's also extremely spacious, with a hidden front pocket for easy-to-grab items, a removable pouch for smaller accessories, two interior pockets, and two padded sleeves for protecting your electronics. There's also a trolley sleeve to conveniently slide it over your luggage handles, in case your shoulder gets tired.

Size: 12 x 16.3 x 6 inches | Weight: 2.1 pounds | Material: Polyester and faux leather | Expandable: No

Best Backpack

Capacity could be more generous

As many adventure travelers and students know, it's hard to beat the convenience of a backpack. And thanks to the stylish design of the Maubert 2.0, fashion-forward jetsetters can also enjoy the same functionality. At hardly over a pound, this backpack is feathery light and accommodates tech devices up to 15.6 inches. Store your water bottle and umbrella in the two external mesh pockets. Internally, there is plenty of organization in the form of two phone pockets, a large zipper pocket, and a smaller RFID pocket for credit cards.

Size: 16.25 x 12 x 5.25 inches | Weight: 1.1 pounds | Material: rPET 300-denier polyester | Expandable: No

Best Softside

Two handles

Multiple interior and exterior sections

Two- or four-wheel trolley options

Available in trendy colors

Some say handles are rigid at full extension

Retractable handle may be a bit difficult to use

Zipper on pocket underneath suitcase may breakw

Though some people naturally gravitate toward the sleek look of a hardside case, softside luggage functions just as well. Softside bags can be stylish, and you don't have to worry about them getting scratched or dinged. The Sky Max spinner comes in a few color options, including sky blue, navy blue, purple, and black. The 21-inch bag is a great carry-on selection, and even if you choose to check the bag, the internal pockets and compression strap are sure to keep your clothes organized.

The bag contains a total of nine compartments, with four of them on the exterior so you can easily retrieve important items or documents. Carry by the adjustable trolley and lift the bag with ease thanks to the two handles.

Size: 23.3 x 14.3 x 10 inches | Weight: 6.5 pounds | Material: Polyester and nylon | Expandable: Yes

Best Hardside

Some say overly stuffing the suitcase can give the exterior dimples

Zipper may be tough to close

This stylish piece of luggage is crafted with a polypropylene shell and features thoughtful details like a TSA-accepted combination lock, packing compartments with tie-down straps and a zippered mesh divider, and spinner wheels to avoid the old bumpy shuffle. The suitcase also expands up to 2 inches for extra space, and it’s available in carry-on, medium checked, and large checked sizes. FYI: This suitcase won the coveted Red Dot Design Award in 2020.

Size:  11.25 x 18.75 x 27.5 inches | Weight: 7.7 pounds | Material : Polypropylene |  Expandable: Yes

Best Lightweight

Easy-to-use

Double-glide wheels

Limited color availability

Some have complained of exterior showing scratches

Schlepping around a heavy suitcase is no fun. Especially when you’re tired, running late, or carrying it on days that end with the letter “y.” That’s why we love this lightweight hardshell suitcase with TSA lock from Delsey. It’s a breeze to maneuver thanks to smartly designed wheels and has a comfy handle. The expandable design gives you up to 25 percent more room for all those goodies you picked up on the road. Other specs that make us swoon: tie-down straps in the main compartment to keep your clothing bundled together in one place, the easy-to-collapse trolley handle, and the availability of three sizes so that those looking for a proper suitcase set can buy a uniform collection of luggage.

Size: 21 x 10 x 13.5 inches | Weight: 6.2 pounds | Material: ABS | Expandable: Yes

Final Verdict

Though it's hard to choose a single piece of amazing Delsey luggage—the brand offers many excellent options—the Helium Aero is a solid option for most travelers. The material is equally lightweight and durable and the colorful options will stand out at the carousel. If you are looking for a reliable carry-on that's easy to keep clean, try the Cruise 2.0 Spinner .

What to Look For in Delsey Luggage

Carry-on vs. checked.

One bag does not fit all trips, and with so many airline fees today, you’ll want to figure out how you travel most frequently. Do you pack light and take a carry-on only, or do you consistently check a bag? Delsey has great options for both, but make an investment based on how you travel most.

Once you narrow down practicalities, you can take a look at style. Delsey’s options range from ultra-modern, minimal looks to vintage-style designs in browns and faux-leather. It can be hard to decide with options this fun, but with Delsey, if you don’t want a standard black bag, you definitely don’t have to settle for one.

Softshell vs. Hardshell

Delsey offers a number of varieties of both softshell and hardshell luggage, with the former generally a bit cheaper and easier to fit into small spaces like car trunks. However, hardshell bags offer peace of mind when it comes to protecting items inside the bag, and many prefer the style.

To change the lock code, open the cover and press down on the reset button with the tip of a ballpoint pen or something of a similar size. Enter your new code. Then press the button on the right and the reset button will go back to its original position once done.

To register your bag for Desley’s product warranty, take a picture of your receipt and the hangtag attached to the bag’s exterior. Upload those pictures to Delsey's warranty website , where you will be prompted to answer a couple of questions about your purchase.

To clean the hardshell luggage, warm water and soap used with a soft cloth or sponge will do the trick. To avoid any marks, rinse off your suitcase thoroughly before letting it dry. For softshell luggage, use a gentle soap diluted with water and a soft sponge to get out any marks. After rinsing off, it is recommended to use a hairdryer on a low setting to speed up the drying process.

Skyway Luggage Review: Lightweight Suitcases On A Budget

Skyway reminds me a lot of TravelPro because they produce quality luggage at affordable prices.

Their range of soft and hard case luggage can hold its own against a lot of the more expensive brands like Delsey and Samsonite . They have the same features, great materials, zippers, and wheels. This is perhaps not surprising when you find out they are owned by Ricardo Beverly Hills based in the USA.

They are also well known for making seriously light luggage. And the cases last for years, despite the fact that you have not paid a fortune for a suitcase.

In this review, I want to show you some of the best options you have with Skyway and why they are a good buy.

There are also a couple of downsides, so I will be sure to highlight those as we go.

In the end, you will be able to decide whether a Skyway suitcase is for you or not.

Top Product Overview

Skyway eastlake luggage.

Skyway Eastlake Carry-On

Skyway makes some seriously light and affordable luggage and the Eastlake range is their flagship range when it comes to that.

Here are the quick specs on the 3 sizes you can buy with the Mirage:

  • 22 inch Carry-on Suitcase – 9.5 x 14.2 x 22.5 inches @ 8.5 lbs
  • 28 inch Checked Suitcase – 10.8 x 18.2 x 28 inches @ 8.2 lbs
  • 32 inch Checked Suitcase – 11.5 x 20.5 x 32 inches @ 12.5 lbs

As you can see from the weights, they are extremely light cases.

If you compare the with the Maxlite 5 from Travelpro (which is also super-light) except for the carry-on, which for some reason seems to be about the same weight as the 28-inch model. Maybe they put in some extra pockets?

The Features

These cases are light, but also have all the standard soft case features you would expect

  • 4 spinner wheels for easy maneuvering
  • 2 Zippered front pockets
  • Deep internal compartment that is easy to access and pack in
  • Lockable zippers
  • Expander zipper for those who overpack or bring home extra souvenirs
  • Very lightweight
  • Deep easy to pack interior
  • Expandable size
  • Spinner wheels for easy moving
  • No bottom handle (useful for moving from overhead or trunk of the car
  • No inside compression straps
  • Only 2 positions on telescopic handle

Skyway Nimbus 2.0 Luggage

Skyway Nimbus 2.0 Hardside Expandable Spinner Luggage, Black, Carry-On 20-Inch

The Nimbus series is hard case luggage that opens clamshell-style for packing in two convenient halves. Made from strong ABS material, it is a little heavier than the Mirages above but has a stronger protective exterior.

  • 20 inch Carry on – 19.5″ x 14″ x 8.5″ @ 7 lbs, 9oz
  • 24 inch Checked Case – 24″ x 17″ x 9.5″ @ 9 lbs, 3oz
  • 28 inch Checked Case – 28″ x 19″ x 10″ @ 8 lbs, 8oz

As you can see from the weights, they are quite light pieces of luggage, although if you want to go insanely light, you can look no further than the Samsonite Firelite and Cosmolite series.

The Samsonites are more expensive of course, so the Nimbus is a great compromise!

Packed With Features

The hard cases work a little differently as everything needs to be on the inside, however, you still get quite a few nice features:

  • Top section mesh zippered cover
  • Bottom section compression straps and side zippered pocket (for smaller items)
  • Expandable packing with a zippered-expander
  • Smooth 360 spinner wheels
  • Gel cushioned handles
  • Two-sided packing with zippered mesh and pocket
  • Comfy gel handles
  • Easy 360-degree spinner wheels
  • Hard ABS shell gives extra protection
  • Simple design without any frills or fuss
  • A little heavier than a soft case
  • Two-sided packing might not suit everyone (compared to one deep side on a soft case)
  • No extra pockets on the outside (like soft case)
  • No built-in TSA locks (like in Delsey and Samsonite)

Skyway Epic Luggage

SKYWAY Epic Softside 2-Wheel Carry-On

The Epic series is softshell luggage is a more luxurious version of Skyway’s Eastlake cases above. You get all the same kind of features plus a few more. So, if you want to spend a little more and have extra comfort on your travels, this is the suitcase for you.

These cases are also quite a bit lighter than the Eastlake cases, so you get even more (or in this case less :>) for your money. However, just keep in mind these suitcases use old-school skate wheels and not 4 spinners like more modern cases, the Eastlake and Nimbus included.

  • 21 inch Carry on – 7 x 14 x 21 inches @ 6.2 lbs
  • 25 inch Checked Case – 11 x 19 x 27.5 inches @ 7.65 lbs
  • 28 inch Checked Case – 10 x 19 x 28 inches @ 10.9 lbs
  • Lightweight, durable, and abrasion-resistant material
  • Multistage collapsable handle with ergonomic grip
  • 2 in-line skate wheels
  • Expandable packing with a zippered-expander (2 inches)
  • Super lightweight and durable
  • Multistage collapsable handle
  • Straps to secure luggage in packing section
  • Skate wheels instead of spinner
  • No Built-in TSA locks
  • More expensive than the other Skyway luggage

Other Skyway Luggage

The Mirage and Nimbus are two of Skyway’s bestselling products, but they also have a couple of others you might want to check out such as the

Luggage these days is much more than just a way to carry your stuff from home to the hotel and back again. Rebooted and redesigned, suitcases are now more stylish than ever, with smart features and sleek upgrades that have made them Instagram-famous and utterly desirable.

American luggage brand Away has gone back to basics with bags and cases that are designed to work with you and offer creative solutions that help you enjoy your travel experience better.

Every piece in its collection has been thoughtfully designed to function perfectly and provide practical solutions to real-life travel problems.

From carry-ons to checked luggage and daypacks to a garment bag, every piece from Away has an attractive minimalist aesthetic on the outside, complemented by interiors that will transform the way you carry your belongings.

Bottom Line: With compression compartments to maximize your luggage load, hardshell exteriors that can be thrown around and still look super chic, and even a hidden battery to charge your devices on the go, the people at Away may just have created the ultimate suitcase.

Style and Look

Away Luggage

With a hard, impenetrable shell, The Carry-On looks sleek and minimalist , and will never be out of place being pulled through any cosmopolitan metropolis or high-tech airport.

Unlike most monotone hipster carry-alls, The Carry-On is available in a range of colors, including navy, coast grey, sky blue, green, asphalt, white, sand, blush, and violet. Finding the right color to suit your personality shouldn’t be a problem.

Size and Compartments

Away Luggage compartments

Sized to fit in the overhead luggage compartments of most major airlines , this is practically the perfect carry-on . Measuring 21.7 x 13.7 x 9 inches on the outside, you can stow above or below every time you fly.

On the inside, you’ll find 2 separate compartments. A large zippered compartment to one side will deftly house your shoes, toiletries, and other hard objects. While to the other side, there is an impressively large open space for your clothing. The internal measurements are 20 x 13.5 inches with a total capacity of 39.8 liters.

Away Luggage compression straps

Want to fit more in? One of the absolute best bits of the Away brand cases is the unique interior compression system .

Much more than just a couple of straps to pull around a bulging clothes pile, this offers an entire semi-rigid panel on top that squashes down to give you those all-important extra inches of interior space when you need it.

Away luggage pocket

If that wasn’t enough, the case also comes with a washable laundry bag that folds up when not in use. While the bag isn’t huge, it’s fine to keep dirty items separate over a long weekend.

Durability and Materials

Away Luggage hard shell

Made from an impenetrable shell that bends under pressure, but never breaks, The Carry-On offers first-class construction.

The sturdy, hard-wearing polycarbonate outer shell can take its fair share of knocks and bangs, while the softly lined interiors and genuine leather luggage tags and hinges give it a luxury feel that belies its functional form and price tag.

Bottom Line: By cleverly blurring the lines between a traditional hardshell suitcase and a flexible nylon/canvas one, The Carry-On offers rigid durability alongside complete adaptability.

Away Carry-On Luggage Black

This smart little case can charge cell phones, tablets , e-readers , and anything else that’s powered by a USB cord. With enough energy tucked away to fully charge your iPhone up to 4 times, The Carry-On is the ultimate companion for the tech-savvy traveler.

You can even fly with your electable suitcase battery as it’s compliant with current airline policies, FAA, TSA, and DOT regulations and meets UN/DOT 38.3 requirements. When you reach your destination, plug it in and let it recharge before you set off once again.

Be aware that while it can be carried in the cabin, checked luggage cannot contain lithium batteries. The Carry-On battery can be removed in a matter of seconds and carried with you in the cabin.

These sorts of design features add value to you as the passenger and set the Away brand miles apart from the competition.

Hot Tip: If the charging capability isn’t your thing or you already own a power bank, you can opt to purchase the case without a battery, which will make the case lighter and increase the interior space. Just know that if you opt for this you can’t add a battery later on.

Away Luggage wheels

With 4 360-degree spinning Japanese Hinomoto wheels, The Carry-On makes light work of long runways and endless terminal buildings. Agile and incredibly easy to maneuver, you can guide the case with just a single fingertip should you need to.

Away luggage wheels

The pull-along handle is light and smooth and effortlessly extends or retracts to suit the height of the carrier. Made from superior materials, the telescopic handle is just like any other suitcase handle, only that bit better.

Lock and Zippers

Away Luggage TSA lock

With not one, but 2 zippers for easy opening and closing, The Carry-On does away with the need for separate locks by offering an integrated combination lock. Just activate a 3-digit combination and the mechanism secures the zippers in seconds.

As the lock is part of the actual suitcase, you never run the risk of losing your travel lock again, and even more impressive, the lock is TSA-approved to allow agents access when they need it.

Warranty and Customer Service

All Away Carry-On cases come complete with a limited lifetime warranty that covers any damage to the shell, wheels, handles, zippers, or anything else that functionally impairs the luggage.

The electronic components are guaranteed for 2 years. That said, the good folks at Away do offer replacement batteries should you experience any issues outside of this warranty period.

Impressive credentials and an even more impressive Instagram campaign have made the Away cases some of the most sought-after in the travel sector. But, while they may be both pretty and practical, there are just a couple of really tiny downsides, too.

If you want to recharge your case to keep your phone topped up, you’re realistically looking at an overnight charge in your hotel before it has enough power to start charging your devices again.

While these cases are incredibly durable and designed to last a long time, they’re best suited to vacations and tourist travel . What is essentially a lifestyle brand with an excellent social media following, it attracts travelers who want to see the world without roughing it.

Globetrotting adventurers who plan to stray from the road less traveled may find a backpack or duffel bag more practical and hard-wearing.

Finally, the telescopic handles are a bit on the shaky side. While adept enough to wheel your case through the airport, you can still feel a slight tremor when you walk.

Bottom Line: All of these are minor gripes, and for the most part, The Carry-On from Away is an excellent suitcase that delights in providing both form and function to give you a good-looking case with on-trend extras.

Concerned that The Carry-On isn’t right for you? Away offers a full collection of luggage essentials to suit every traveler and every journey.

Away Carry-On Alternative Sizes

  • The Bigger Carry-On — This carry-on is just like the standard one, but is a little bit bigger. Measuring up at 22.7 x 14.7 x 9.6 inches, this little beauty was designed to squeeze into the cabin bag containers found at check-in and to give the user some all-important extra internal inches. It also has just over 8 liters of extra space compared to the standard-sized The Carry-On.
  • The Medium — This midsize suitcase is designed to be checked in the hold when you travel and offers enough space for all those extra outfits, as well as the same unique compression system and high-quality polycarbonate construction. It measures 26 x 18.5 x 11 inches and has 68.8 liters of storage space.
  • The Large — Away’s biggest suitcase yet, this full-size family case has the same attractive and durable polycarbonate shell, interior compression system, and removable laundry bag. Just as impressive as The Carry-On, only much bigger! It measures 29 x 20.5 x 12.5 inches and has 99.2 liters of storage space.

Away Travel Luggage With a Pocket

Away Carry-On Luggage With Pocket

  • The Carry-On with Pocket  — Like a regular carry-on , only better, this is still the perfect size for overhead storage bins, but with an extra, useful pocket. The nylon front pocket is big enough and protective enough to carry your boarding passes and travel documents, without eating into that all-important interior space.
  • The Bigger Carry-On with Pocket — This suitcase offers an external nylon pocket that’s perfect for carrying your vacation documents, magazines, or other useful bits of kit close by your side when you travel.
  • The Daily Carry-On with Pocket — A new release by Away, this carry-on is slightly smaller than its other carry-on counterparts and is geared towards short trips and business travel. The pocket provides easy access to your daily essentials.

Kids’ Carry-On

Make it a family affair with The Kids’ Carry-On . Just like the regular version, your mini-me can enjoy a shell that never breaks, a battery that charges their phone or tablet, and a versatile interior with a compression system and separate laundry bag.

This is the very same as the grown-up version but is just a little bit smaller in size at 18 x 12 x 9 inches with a 31-liter capacity.

The Aluminum Range

Away Carry-On Luggage Aluminum

  • The Carry-On: Aluminum Edition — Made with a durable aluminum shell and leather-wrapped, slow-release handles, this little beauty offers the same standards as the regular The Carry-On, but this time is made of even more robust stuff.
  • The Bigger Carry-On: Aluminum Edition The Carry-On — Sized up but still made from aluminum, this is the bigger of the 2 carry-on cases. It offers all the same great features but in a slightly larger package.
  • The Medium: Aluminum Edition — With the same beautiful curved lines and an attractive aluminum shell, the medium-size case is perfect for those who want more than a carry-on but don’t crave a full-size case.
  • The Large: Aluminum Edition — With enough room for all the family, the trusty aluminum shell will protect everything inside. Shoehorn even more in with the interior compression system, and as you have come to expect, bring home your dirties in the removable laundry bag.

Modern-day luggage is fast becoming a reflection of the way we travel and indeed, where we travel to.

Away not only creates beautifully designed, cleverly crafted suitcases and bags that are more than fit for purpose, but it is also one of the few brands that take a holistic approach to modern-day travel. It offers practical solutions to the rigors of reaching your next destination with ease.

Hardshell exteriors, internal compression systems, and the ability to charge almost every kind of device on the go makes the Away cases some of the very best, and most thoughtful, on the market today.

DELSEY Paris Sky Max 2.0 3-Piece Set (21/24/28) Review & Test

Josephine seale.

delsey paris sky max 20

In this blog post, I delve into the features, advantages, and drawbacks of the DELSEY Paris Sky Max 2.0 3-Piece Set (21/24/28), offering insights into its functionality, design, and overall travel suitability.

Table of Contents

DELSEY Paris Sky Max 2.0 3-Piece Set (21/24/28) Features

DELSEY Paris Sky Max 2.0 Softside Expandable Luggage with Spinner Wheels, Blue, 3 Piece Set

Unzipping the main compartment of each bag revealed a treasure trove of organization – a charming blend of practicality and elegance. I found myself intrigued by the elastic tie-down straps and the zippered pocket, perfect for safeguarding those precious travel trinkets. On the other side, there was a 3-side opening lined divider with a mesh pocket in the lid, an absolute delight for any organization enthusiast like me!

Packing for my trip turned into an event rather than a chore. My dress clothes found a secure home in the additional storage at the top of the case. The largest piece, though bigger than expected, offered ample space for all my needs, making it an excellent companion for my extended trips. However, it turned out to be a little too large for a regular checked bag, clocking in at over 63″ in total. So, do keep that in mind if you’re a frequent flyer.

DELSEY Paris Sky Max 2.0 Features

The medium and carry-on bags were slightly smaller than my previous Samsonite set but had their charm. However, I did run into some issues. Once packed, they seemed to lean forward, refusing to stay upright on their four wheels. And they proved to be a bit obstinate, getting caught on every minor crack on the pavement or carpet, not rolling smoothly unless tipped on two wheels.

In conclusion, I wanted to fall head over heels for these suitcases – they had the looks, the allure, the promise of Parisian charm. But alas, the glamour couldn’t completely eclipse the need for practical functionality. If you’re drawn to these for their style and you don’t mind the extra bit of effort navigating them, they could be just the travel companions you need!

Craftsmanship and Design

True to the DELSEY brand, the Sky Max 2.0 luggage set displays an elegant and enduring aesthetic. The twill-patterned polyester fabric, lightweight yet durable, serves a practical purpose, enduring the rigors of travel while maintaining its classy look. The color Blue, which I opted for, added a unique flair that easily distinguished my luggage from others.

DELSEY Paris Sky Max 2.0 Organization and Capacity

Organization and Capacity

The set comes in three sizes: 21″, 24″, and 28″. The largest suitcase offers considerable space but exceeds the typical checked baggage size at over 63″. The medium and small suitcases were compact, slightly smaller than the equivalent ones in my old Samsonite set. Despite being a heavy packer, I found the additional storage in the case’s top and the organizational features like the zippered pocket and tie-down straps in the main compartment, and a three-side opening divider with a mesh pocket in the lid, highly convenient.

Maneuverability Issues

The four-spinner wheel system promised ease of transport. However, my experience was quite the contrary. Once packed, the cases leaned forward, struggling to stay upright on the four wheels. They faltered on the smallest irregularities in the pavement and didn’t roll smoothly on carpets unless I tipped them onto two wheels.

Warranty Registration Concerns

Another concern was the warranty registration process. It requires a specific code supposedly found in a document inside the bag. Despite thorough searches, this code eluded me, hindering my attempts to register for the warranty and use the QR tracking feature.

DELSEY Paris Sky Max 2.0 3-Piece Set Maneuverability Issues

Overall Experience

While the DELSEY Paris Sky Max 2.0 Softside Expandable Luggage set initially struck me with its Parisian charm and smart design, the practical experience fell short of my expectations. The maneuverability issues, particularly the tipping and getting caught on minor cracks, and the warranty registration difficulties, diminished my overall satisfaction. Despite these issues, the lightweight nature of the suitcases was a definite plus. Consequently, my star rating reflects these diverse experiences.

DELSEY Paris Sky Max 2.0 3-Piece Set (21/24/28)

The DELSEY Paris Sky Max 2.0 Softside Expandable Luggage is a three-piece set that offers stylish and versatile travel solutions.

Composed of lightweight and durable polyester fabric, the set is designed to withstand the rigors of travel while maintaining an elegant aesthetic with its twill pattern.

Each suitcase in the set is fitted with four spinner wheels for easy multi-directional rolling and a dual-position telescopic handle for 2 or 4-wheel use.

The luggage set comes with various compartments for organization, including elastic tie-down straps, a zippered pocket in the main compartment, a 3-sided opening lined divider with a mesh pocket in the lid, and a side pocket for easy access to small accessories.

Practical features include two front pockets and the capacity to expand up to 2 inches for additional packing space. An integrated TSA-accepted combination lock is included for the 24 and 28-inch models to secure your belongings. The set prioritizes ease of carrying with cushioned top and side carry handles and a bottom handle for added convenience. Despite its refined and handy features, it has been observed by some users that the suitcases might struggle with stability when fully packed, and their rolling efficiency on certain surfaces may not be optimal. Nonetheless, the DELSEY Paris Sky Max 2.0 Softside Expandable Luggage set is geared towards providing a blend of style, comfort, and functionality for travelers.

Luggage Review: Arlo Skye The Check-In

Kara Cutruzzula

Yawn or awe. Those are basically the only two reactions to a piece of luggage. Most basic bags in black or gray rarely make an impression and blur together on the carousel or walking to a gate. But then there are the rare pieces that make you stop and go "ooh." The question, however, is whether the bag's specs match its style.

Arlo Skye is a new direct-to-consumer luggage brand whose founders previously worked at Louis Vuitton and Tumi. They spent over a year refining and launching their first product, the aluminum Carry-On, that was a hit with the fashion and design world after its November 2016 launch. (It's one of those that makes you go "ooh.") Recently, they launched a big brother alternative, The Check-In , for longer stays or for people who need a bit more packing space.

Like the clothing and mattress industries, the luggage world was ripe for disruption and like its competitor Away , Arlo Skye cuts past typical wholesale channels to offer bags direct to consumers online. The result? A big, gleaming behemoth of a roller that wheels around so quietly it might sneak up on you — for under $500. We took it for a spin.

Arlo Skye bag

The Check-In is spacious yet manageable: 27" x 17.6" x 11.1" with a 66L capacity. The exterior is made of virgin makrolon (aka micro-textured) polycarbonate with two aluminum alloy corner caps and an aluminum alloy frame.

It weighs a light 10.5 pounds, roughly on par for a similar polycarbonate bag of this size. The bag retails for $395, has free shipping in the US and is sent out within 24 hours. (It's also sold in a set with The Carry-On for $895, a $50 savings on buying individually.) There are two TSA -approved locks and the wheels are 60mm and claim to be "15% quieter than their polyurethane counterparts."

There's not a zipper to be found the outside, but plenty in the interior, which has multiple pocket dividers and compression straps. It also comes with a leather name tag, two shoe bags, one laundry bag and a cotton "dust protection cover" in case you take a long break between trips.

Arlo Skye says their products are for "the design-obsessed," so it's no wonder the bag is quite good-looking. On picking me up from the airport, my friend immediately mentioned how sleek it looked. It's attractive enough to be wheeled into a five-star hotel, but you might feel a pang of guilt knowing that it'll be knocked around the luggage carousel. No outer pockets or zippers means nothing will snag or break — but also means you can't grab anything quickly after your flight.

Currently, The Check-In comes in three color options: Penguin Black, Sardine Silver and Champagne. The Check-In has the same grooved outer shell—which brings to mind Rimowa—as its kid sister, The Carry-On (the big different is the mini version is made of aluminum-magnesium alloy and has a built-in charger).

sky travel luggage reviews

The Road Test

Arlo Skye recommends The Check-In for trips ranging 15 to 21 days; I took it on a New York-to-California trip that lasted 12 days, but was grateful for the extra room (it was about 65% full when I left) because I'd be hauling back Christmas presents.

The interior compartments and fabric divider with multiple pockets cut down my packing time significantly. Everything seemed to have a place and the combination locks shut with a satisfying click. The dual compartments on either side of the shell could be very convenient dividers for couples traveling together who only want to check one bag (no mingling of socks or underwear necessary).

One major realization: I never knew how obnoxiously noisy the wheels on my other bags were; you could hear me coming from two terminals away. But this was whisper-quiet and easy to navigate. The recessed handle wasn't wiggly or wobbly and I wasn't worried about the bag toppling over. The bag doesn't look or feel as big as other monster-sized check-ins — you know, the ones that look like they're hauling the entire cast's wardrobe for Star Wars: The Last Jedi.

After checking the bag at JFK, we met again at Hollywood Burbank Airport (formerly known as the Bob Hope Airport, and by far the most chill place to fly in and out of LA). After one go-around on the carousel it had a few small black scuffs and some nicks on the corners. Of course, bags are going to get dings and scratches — a pristine bag reveals you rarely travel — but the light Champagne color made them a little more evident.

The second test came at California's Fresno Air Terminal, when I arrived five minutes too late to check my bag. (The 45-minute cut-off prior to departure is one important detail to remember if you're used to carry-ons.) But the kind American Airlines agent said he'd give me a "Hail Mary" pass; if I removed any oversized liquids, I could go through security and gate-check my bag instead of having to pay. This doesn't happen often/ever and I wondered if my good luck was due to my shiny new bag or because the airport was practically dead and there are still good people in the world. Either way, I was grateful.

Sure enough, by the end of my trip I had somehow acquired twice as much stuff — including a two-quart saucepan, two thick books, new shirts, sweaters and pants. Somehow, it all fit for my return trip. The hardshell case protected picture frames and other breakables and felt like a mini vault.

sky travel luggage reviews

The Details

The Check-In is also available in a limited-edition sage version through a collaboration with Sight Unseen with a graphic pastel interior designed by illustrator Antti Kekki. If you care to know your bag's origins, it's assembled in China, with parts sourced from Europe, Japan, South Korea, Taiwan and China. If the price isn't right, you might want to look elsewhere. Since it's a direct-to-consumer company, Arlo Skye doesn't have sales or promotions; this is more of a take-it-or-leave-it deal.

For those wondering, the company got its name from a vintage children's book titled Arlo and added "Skye" because the founders say they love getting lost in the clouds. Arlo Skye has a 21-day return policy: You can road test the bags and there's a free shipping return and a full refund.

The Takeaway

If you care about style, but don't want to spring for a more expensive Tumi or Rimowa, Arlo Skye is a durable and handsome alternative. If you're a minimalist packer, The Check-In may be too roomy, but if you're looking at a longer haul and could use organizational help, the numerous pouches and sections make it almost impossible to pack this bag poorly. Just remember to get to the airport with enough time to check your check-in.

Away Luggage Review: Are the Popular Carry-Ons Worth the Hype?

We put the internet's favorite suitcase through hours of testing to determine if it's worth buying.

What I thought of the Away Carry-On

Should you buy away carry-on luggage, other types of away suitcases, more away travel products we like.

As an analyst in the Good Housekeeping Institute Textiles Lab, I have personally tested dozens of travel products, from carry-on luggage and smart suitcases to hardside luggage and travel backpacks . After putting the Away carry-on through our rigorous Lab evaluations — which include using specialized equipment to analyze scratch and water resistance, as well as an obstacle course to measure wheel performance and maneuverability — I was blown away by this bag for being impressively lightweight, scratch resistant, easy to maneuver and fitting everything in our packing tests. In fact, it landed the top spot for carry-on luggage in our roundup of the best luggage brands of 2024 .

The bottom line: Away luggage is absolutely worth investing in.

What is Away luggage?

Away is a travel gear brand that offers a variety of travel accessories, including checked suitcases , backpacks , packing cubes and weekender bags . The brand originally went viral for its carry-on featuring a removable battery that can charge your phone on the go, but Away has since stopped offering battery packs with its suitcases as most people already own portable chargers .

Away's Carry-On and Bigger Carry-On are the brand's two most popular items — they are made from the same materials and have the same features but in two different sizes. In the brand's most recent update to its luggage line, the standard Carry-On now has a slightly larger packing capacity and is a bit heavier than the previous model. I put the new standard Carry-On to the test in the Textiles Lab and I used the Bigger Carry-On during a recent vacation to find out if Away luggage is actually worth buying.

The Bigger Carry-On

When it comes to luggage material, polycarbonate reigns supreme over other hardside materials like plastics. Away carry-ons are made with polycarbonate, which is extremely durable and more lightweight than metals like aluminum.

Polycarbonate bags typically ace our drop tests, which involve GH pros filling a suitcase with a set weight and releasing the luggage from a 3-foot height. We repeat this test at various angles and note any damages and imperfections. As suspected, after I dropped it from different angles using our drop tester, the Away carry-on showed no dents, damages or changes in appearance .

During testing, we also use a wire to scratch the surface of the suitcase and then rate any scuffs or marks left behind. Compared to other suitcases, Away's carry-on aced our scratch-resistance testing, showing very minimal scuffs and remaining in great condition . Because marks and scuffs are inevitable on hardside luggage, the suitcases also come with a magic eraser sponge, so you can easily buff the outside of your suitcase when scuffs appear to keep your luggage looking fresh trip after trip.

I gave Away's handles lower comfort scores, compared to the other carry-ons I tested. They felt a bit wobbly and less sturdy than other carry-on handles, and they don't offer any padding at the grip. The newest iteration of the brand's carry-on luggage features an additional underside grab handle near the wheels to help make it easier to stow and retrieve from an overhead bin.

The 360º wheels rolled easily over a variety of different surfaces when I was at the airport, including linoleum, tile and carpet. Testers agreed, finding this suitcase easy to maneuver through our obstacle course and over different floorings.

A carry-on absolutely has to hold everything you need for your vacation. Away carry-ons have massive interiors , clocking in at 39.8L for the Carry-On and 47.9L for the Bigger Carry-On. When you open the suitcase, there's equal packing space on both sides. One side is a large zippered compartment, and the other is open with compression straps to keep everything in place. There are also zippered pockets for smaller items, so nothing gets lost at the bottom of your suitcase. For ultimate organization, pair the suitcase with the brand's mesh packing cubes , which excelled in our recent packing cubes test and fit perfectly in the carry-on.

I was impressed with just how much I could fit in the Bigger Carry-On — enough for a whole week's vacation without needing a checked bag. It was easy to keep all my belongings organized, and I especially loved the included laundry bag that kept my dirty clothes separate. This bag came with a stylish leather luggage tag in a similar color to the suitcase that keeps my contact info accessible if my luggage gets lost. (Remember not to put your home address on your luggage tag and instead just your email address or phone number.) Away luggage also features TSA-compliant locks to keep your belongings protected.

Starting at $275 for the Carry-On, Away luggage isn't cheap. But for the cost, you get a sleek suitcase made with durable high-quality materials and a well-organized interior for easy packing. At a similar price to our other top-tested luggage brands, like TravelPro and Samsonite , Away carry-ons aren't the most expensive suitcases I've tested either. (Both Tumi and Rimowa carry-ons start at $650, for example.) The brand also boasts an impressive 100-day return period on unused products, so you have lots of time to decide if it's the right fit for you. Note that personalized products and final sale items are not eligible for returns or exchanges.

If you love its chic appearance and durable polycarbonate shell, Away luggage can be worth the investment. But if you're ultimately in the market for something more affordable, I suggest checking out our top-tested picks from Target and Amazon Basics .

Besides the famous carry-ons, the brand offers a few other styles of suitcases. There are checked sizes of the polycarbonate luggage as well as aluminum styles. The checked bags are made with the same durable polycarbonate material as the carry-ons and match in appearance if you're looking to create a stylish set.

I haven't yet tested Away's aluminum carry-ons , but I am wary of the higher price tag (starting at $675) and additional weight (10.1 lbs compared to 7.5 lbs for the polycarbonate version). Beyond that, it does feature an overall similar design with 360° wheels and a telescopic handle.

Away also offers Flex styles of its polycarbonate suitcases. These suitcases expand for an additional 2.25" of space to fit all the extra goodies you bought on vacation. However, when the suitcase is fully expanded, it no longer works as carry-on luggage and must be checked. Note that this style has a higher price tag than the brand's traditional polycarbonate carry-ons.

In addition to the brand's suitcases, GH analysts have tested a variety of travel products from Away. We were especially impressed by Away's Everywhere Bag (available in standard , medium and large sizes), which held an impressive amount in our Lab tests and was a favorite among testers for its sleek look and roomy, well-organized interior. The brand recently launched a trendy quilted version too!
