Tour Edge Template Series putters (2023): What you need to know

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2023/eden_black_top.png

WHAT YOU NEED TO KNOW: Tour Edge launches a new installment of its Template putters, a collection of classic shapes cast from soft 304 stainless steel and each featuring a milled face and friction grooves. There are seven new shapes in the series, among them a heel-toe weighted Anser-style blade, a parallel-winged mallet, a clamshell shaped mallet and a plumbers neck, heel-toe weighted half-mallet.

PRICE: $130. 34 and 35 inches, in both black and silver PVD finishes. Available at retail Nov. 1.

3 COOL THINGS 1. Looks Familiar: Like the idea of “template” holes in golf course architecture, first described by C.B. MacDonald, the shapes in the Tour Edge Template putter series continues to evoke some of the more popular forms across the current putter landscape, just as it did when it was introduced in 2019 . In addition to the single blade model whose plumbers neck heel-toe weighted form takes its lead from the Iconic Ping Anser, there’s also a winged mallet reminiscent of the Odyssey No. 7, as well as classic clamshell and half mallet designs. A wider blade and an oversized open-frame “The new Template putter series has taken leaps and bounds in the look and feel department,” said David Glod, Tour Edge president and master club designer. “This putter line is bringing together today’s technology with classic putter designs and perfectly blending the two, just like what Template golf holes are designed to do in course architecture.”

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2023/punchbowl_black_top.png

2. Going deep on grooves: Each putter in the Template series features a grooved face designed for two functions. First, the micro-milled etchings are there to create a softer feel on the already soft 304 stainless steel head. According to Glod the 304 measures 50 percent softer than 17-4 stainless steel, which is traditionally used on the least expensive putters. Second, the grooves are an effort to create initial roll more quickly with less backspin and skidding. That leads to a more efficient roll for better distance and direction control. The grooves on these latest Template models also are 20 percent deeper than past iterations for a greater effect on roll and feel.

/content/dam/images/golfdigest/fullset/2023/valley_black_top.png

3. Finishing touch: The PVD coating on these models comes in both a black and silver finishes. (PVD is a thin coating that is the result of a physical vapor deposition process produced in a vacuum environment.) The PVD finish improves overall durability as well. A central aiming line aids alignment and a contrasting black section on the silver finish models further frames the ball at address.

Tour Edge Pure Feel Template Series Putter

Description.

The new Template series includes two mallet designs, three blade designs and a semi-mallet, all featuring micro-groove technology to promote immediate topspin for an accurate roll. The micro-groove technology provides an extremely soft feel upon contact and reduces skidding off the face, which is the essence of “Pure Feel” technology that Tour Edge has long employed on its putters and wedges.

The Pure Feel Template putters feature the classic designs forged with modern innovations that will help any golfer improve their scoring. With that in mind, Tour Edge Master Club Designer David Glod set out to bring out six models of new shapes that are based on some of the best known putter designs of all time.   These classic designs have long been used as a guide to manufacturing new putters with updated technology featuring a classic look. The New Template Series models include: Mallets:  Alps, Biarritz (RH and LH available), Road Blades:  Cape, Eden (RH and LH available) Semi-Mallet:  Redan

The Pure Feel Template series utilizes 304-Stainless Steel with bead blasted top-line and flange to eliminate glare and a CNC milled micro-groove face that results in a finely balanced putter with a soft, consistent feel.

The oversized PureFeel TAC grip is a jumbo grip that prevents the golfer’s wrists from breaking down during the putting motion. This minimizes grip pressure and head rotation for a softer touch and purer putting stroke.

The grip utilizes a never-before manufactured thermal plastic that is born from a special process called Thermal Plastic Suspension Polymerization, or T.P.S.P .   The T.P.S.P. manufacturing process uses mechanical agitation to mix a monomer with a liquid, forcing the monomer to polymerize and form perfectly aligned spheres of polymer.

A sleek, black Contrast Technology Alignment aide is featured on each putter design. All six putters have a 71-degree lie and a 3-degree loft. Optic Technology increases the contrast between the putter and green, helping golfers focus on the leading edge for an accurate aim.

Tour Edge launches 2024 Template Putter Series featuring 4 new designs

tour edge template putter review

Named after template golf course designs, Tour Edge today announces its 2024 Template Series of putters. The collection features black PVD and silver PVD versions of three modified shapes and four new designs.

More specifically, seven total head shapes will be available in both Black PVD and Silver PVD finishes: Alps, Biarritz, Eden, Maiden, Narrows, Punchbowl, and Valley.

Tour Edge engineers have emphasized, across the line of blades, mallets, and semi-mallets, optimal center of gravity (CG) and moment of inertia (MOI) qualities.

“The new Template putter series has taken leaps and bounds in the look and feel department,” said Tour Edge President and Master Club Designer David Glod. “This putter line is bringing together today’s technology with classic putter designs and perfectly blending the two, just like what Template golf holes are designed to do in course architecture.”

Each putter in the line is individually CNC milled with Micro-Groove face technology (20-percent deeper than the previous generation) for soft feel and reduced skidding for better roll.

Template Series putters are 304 stainless steel and feature bead blasted silver PVD and black PVD finishes.

Additionally, Contrast Technology alignment showcases white-on-black contrast for ease of alignment.

Individual putter details and original template holes information below, via Tour Edge.

Alps: Longer wings on the Alps makes it a conventional mallet putter with a higher MOI, while the double bend hosel provides greater accuracy for a pendulum straight back and through stroke. Face balanced stability with less twisting in the face is the calling card of this design.

Original Template Hole: Prestwick (Hole #17) Notables: Fishers Island (Hole #4), National Golf Links of America (Hole #3), Gibson Island (Hole#4) The Greenbrier- Old White (Hole#13), Yale (Hole #12)

Biarritz: The high MOI mallet design of the Biarritz provides extreme forgiveness, while the double bend face-balanced hosel is designed for a pendulum straight back, straight through putting stroke due to the face of the putter rotating less during the putting stroke.

Original Template Hole: Golf de Biarritz (Hole #3) Notables: Chicago GC – (Hole #8), Camargo (Hole #13), Mid Ocean Club (Hole #13), Fox Chapel (Hole #13)

Eden: The lone blade putter in the series, the Eden features a classic design with a plumber’s neck suits players with an arc-straight stroke.

Original Template Hole: Old Course at St. Andrews (Hole #11) Notables: Fishers Island Club (Hole #11), Essex County CC (Hole #11, Camargo Club (Hole #5), St. Louis CC (Hole #3), Old Macdonald (Hole #2)

Maiden: The mid-mallet design features a forgiving plumber’s neck hosel that helps players square up the putter face. It matches extremely well with an arc-straight style stroke and is suited for a player who tends to leave their putter face open at impact. Original Template Hole: Royal St. George’s Golf Club (Hole #6) Notables: Essex County CC (Hole #12), Southampton Golf Club (Hole #3), CC of Charleston (Hole #7), Yeamans Hall Club (Hole #11)

Narrows: A winged mid-mallet design that features a slant neck with a mid-toe hang that is ideal for a putting stroke with a slight arc, where the closing angle on the forward stroke is moderate and compensates against hitting pulls as your hands will naturally be set up in front of the ball.

Narrows CS: The winged mid-mallet design is coupled with a center shaft in the Narrows CS model that creates an alignment-oriented face-balanced putter suited for players who keeps their eyes directly above the ball and takes the club straight back and swings straight through the ball.

Original Template Hole: Muirfield (Hole #15) Notables: National Golf Links of America (Hole# 15), Metairie Country Club (Hole #6), Forsgate Country Club (Hole #2)

Punchbowl: A rounded full mallet with a forgiveness and accuracy enhancing high MOI and plumber’s neck hosel, an ideal choice for arc-straight style strokes that tend to push putts to the right for a right-handed golfer.

Original Template Holes: Royal Liverpool – Hoylake (Hole #9) and Royal Cinque Ports (Hole #3) Notables: National Golf Links of America (Hole #16), Creek Club – (Hole #6), Chicago GC (Hole #12), Sleepy Hollow (Hole #15), Streamsong Black (Hole # 9)

Valley: The mid-mallet design features a forgiving plumber’s neck hosel that helps players square up the putter face. It matches extremely well with an arc-straight style stroke and is suited for a player who tends to leave their putter face open at impact.

Original Template Hole: National Golf Links of America (Hole #1) Notables: Mid Ocean (Hole #8), Blue Mound Golf and CC (Hole #6), Friar’s Head (Hole #1)

Three Swing Challenge: Testing the Callaway Paradym Ai Smoke Triple Diamond Max driver

tour edge template putter review

Callaway recently released the Paradym Ai Smoke Triple Diamond Max Driver, and BK is ready to see where it stacks up in this week’s Three Swing Challenge!

Why three swings?

Many years ago, the legendary Barney Adams, founder of Adams Golf told us this:

“My formula as a fitter was three shots only. I discounted No. 1 just because it was the first one, counted 100 percent of No. 2 and discounted No. 3 because the player was starting to adjust.”

Tour Edge Announces New Template Series Putter Line

Tour Edge announces their all-new Template Series Putter line featuring four new designs and three modified shapes from the original Template Series.

With a combination of blades, semi-mallets, and mallets, every Template shape was designed with optimized Center of Gravity and Moment of Inertia properties, while suiting every player preference and need.

Seven total head shapes will be available in both Black PUD and Silver PUD finishes: Alps, Biarritz, Eden, Maiden, Narrows, Punchbowl and Valley.

The Template Series putters will be available at a Tour Edge authorized retailer for an MSRP of $129.99 and will be available at retail starting November 1 st .

The putter series’ name is derived from a Template golf hole in golf course architecture.

Template holes were first utilized by Chicago native C.B. Macdonald, who instituted around 20 different template holes from well-known courses like St. Andrews, Prestwick, and North Berwick. He designed Chicago Golf Club, the first 18-hole golf course in North America, located just a few miles up the road from the Tour Edge world headquarters.

Every Template putter in the series is individually CNC milled with Micro-Groove face technology. Micro-Groove leads to an extremely soft feel upon contact and reduces skidding off the face.

The Micro-Grooves in the new Template Series are 20% deeper and wider than the previous Template Series, lending to greater immediate topspin and a more accurate roll.

The putters are made from a 304 Stainless Steel, the softest stainless steel available in putter design, measuring half as soft as 17-4 Stainless Steel while still providing exceptional feedback at impact.

The 304 SS on the Silver PVD finish is bead blasted to eliminate glare, while the new offerings of Black PVD to the Template Series offers a sleek matte look and feel.

A white on black Contrast Technology Alignment aid is featured on each putter design. Contrast optics increase the contrast between the putter and green, helping golfers focus on the leading edge for more accurate aiming.

All eight putter designs feature a 71-degree lie angle and a 3-degree loft and come standard with a Lamkin Deep Etched Pistol grip, a long time Tour favorite now featuring a softer-feeling Genesis Material.

The grips prominent horizontal etched pattern, traditional paddle, and smaller profile provide maximum responsiveness, while its Deep-Etch design is ideal for golfers with an arc, or arc-to-straight putting style when utilizing a traditional, reverse overlap, or cross-handed grip style.

The new models come in standard lengths of 34” and 35” inches. Two models are being made available in both right- and left-handed models available in both the Silver PVD and Black PVD – the Eden and the Narrows models.

Below is description of each new putter head and hosel and a list of the original template holes selected to represent the Template Putter Series:

Tour Edge Set to Launch Pure Feel Template Series Putter line

Tour Edge Set to Launch Pure Feel Template Series Putter line

The well known golf-gear manufacturer just announced its latest putter series, which are expected to hit the shelves worldwide starting with February 1st (2/1/2019), and we are talking about the new Pure Feel Template Series from Tour Edge. The latest and greatest putters from Tour Edge include 2 mallet designs, a semi mallet, and 3 blade designs.

Each and every putter in the Pure Feel Template series is boasting Tour Edge’s patented micro groove technology, for accurate roll and instant topspin. Also, the micro groove technology really shines in regard to delivering an incredibly soft feel upon ball impact, while in the same time, reducing skidding off the putter’s face. In case you were wondering, these are the main characteristics of Tour Edge’s signature Pure Feel technology, which has been incorporated into the company’s wedges and putters for a long time now. As per the Temple particle in the Template series, it depicts a perfectly designed golf hole on a given course, which sets the standard in the industry so to speak, i.e. it’s used as an example of how a (perfect) future hole should look like.

Bettinardi Prepares to Launch Limited Run Themed BB1 Tiki Putter

Case in point: Biarritz’s par 3’s template holes, which are world-renowned for their ability to test a golfer’s skills when it comes to hitting laser accurate long-shots, and we’re talking about 210-240 yards on average. Biarritz is also famous for its enormous green, which sometimes stretches almost eighty yards at some courses, and “copycats” of Biarritz can be played at Chicago Golf Club, Piping Rock and the Camargo Club, if one so inclined.

Tour Edge’s new line of putters were created following a classic forged design, as a homage of sorts, but the company did not forget to introduce state of the art innovations and technologies to keep up with 2019; after all, people buy the latest golf gear to improve their game (and their scoring). Hence, David Glod, Tour Edge Master Club Designer, created these brand new 6 putter models, which are based on classic/best-of putter designs in history, but updated with the latest and greatest technologies to date. The new putter line-up from Tour Edge includes Alps, Biarritz and Road mallets, Cape and Eden Blades and the Redan semi-mallet.

Bettinardi Prepares to Launch Limited Run Themed BB1 Tiki Putter

All the putters in the Pure Feel Template family are engineered using high quality 304 stainless steel, and they feature a CNC milled micro-groove face, along with a bead-blasted top line and flange; these technological improvements are aimed at delivering a consistent soft feel and a supremely balanced putter. David Glod, Tour Edge Master Club Designer, was quoted as saying:

“The first thing you will notice about all six of these new designs is the classic mirror stainless look. They are sleek designs and have a distinct, double-chrome finish with a silver frosted premium look and feel to them. The next thing you’ll notice is the unique oversized Pure Feel TAC grip. It’s a new material that is extremely tacky that we’ve started perfecting that is similar to the technology used in wide receiver’s gloves in the NFL.”

The new putters from Tour Edge arrive with a PureFeel Tac jumbo grip, designed to minimize head rotation and grip pressure for a purer putting stroke and a softer touch by preventing one’s wrists from breaking down. Also, the jumbo grip is built using a special thermoplastic, a never before used material according to Tour Edge. This proprietary thermoplastic is manufactured via a novel technology called TPSP or Thermal Plastic Suspension Polymerization. This cutting edge technological process creates perfectly aligned SP SuperTac polymer spheres by mixing a liquid with a monomer via mechanical agitation.

These spheres can be observed as white dots on the grip’s black thermoplastic base, and they’re designed to protect the grip while providing extreme tackiness, along with resistance to wear and tear. Each putter in the new Pure Feel Template Series features a Contrast Technology Alignment aide, together with Optic Technology and a 71-degree lie and a 3-degree loft, and they’ll be available in 33”, 34”, and 35” inches standard lengths from February 1, 2019 for an MSRP of $99.99 at Tour Edge authorized retailer stores.

Description

Tour edge template maiden putter.

The mid-mallet design features a forgiving plumber’s neck hosel that helps players square up the putter face. It matches extremely well with an arc-straight style stroke and is suited for a player who tends to leave their putter face open at impact.

MICRO-GROOVE FACE TECHNOLOGY - Every putter in the series is individually CNC milled with Micro-Groove face technology. The Micro-Grooves in the new Template Series are 20% deeper and wider than the previous Template Series, lending to greater immediate topspin and a more accurate roll. Micro-Groove leads to an extremely soft feel upon contact and reduces skidding off the face.

SOFTER 304 STAINLESS STEEL FEEL/NEW MATTE BLACK PVD AVAILABLE IN EVERY MODEL- The putters are made from a 304 Stainless Steel, the softest stainless steel available in putter design, measuring half as soft as 17-4 Stainless Steel while still providing exceptional feedback at impact. The 304 SS on the Silver PVD finish is bead blasted to eliminate glare, while the new offerings of Black PVD to the Template Series offers a sleek matte look and feel.

NEW SHAPES FOR EVERY PLAYER TYPE – With a combination of blades, semi-mallets, and mallets between the eight models, every shape was designed with optimized Center of Gravity and Moment of Inertia properties, while suiting every player preference and need.

CONTRAST ALIGNMENT AID- A white on black Contrast Technology Alignment aid is featured on each putter design. Contrast optics increase the contrast between the putter and green, helping golfers focus on the leading edge for more accurate aiming.

LAMKIN DEEP ETCHED PISTOL GRIP – The Lamkin Deep Etched Pistol grip, a longtime Tour favorite, now features a softer-feeling Genesis Material. Its prominent horizontal etched pattern, traditional paddle, and smaller profile provide maximum responsiveness, while its Deep-Etch design is ideal for golfers with an arc, or arc-to-straight putting style when utilizing a traditional, reverse overlap, or cross-handed grip style.
