Community poll: 5 long travel tacoma builds.

White 3rd Gen Tacoma With RCLT HD Long Travel Kit

Welcome back to another community poll. This is a column interview Q&A with independent owner-submitted feedback from the overland community – centered around one topic. Each owner has thoroughly tested their products through off-roading or overlanding and gives us their honest opinion review of their set-up.

Long travel suspension is a high-end upgrade that significantly improves your truck’s off-road performance. They provide a wider track width, increased wheel travel, and increased traction – especially at faster speeds. This all enables the truck to handle tough and uneven terrains with ease. Think of these setups as somewhere between a standard mid-travel suspension and Baja trophy truck territory. Kits vary in complexity and modification.

Tell Us About Your Setup

I upgraded to long travel to maximize my truck’s off-road capabilities and to run larger tires.

I chose JDFabrication for the front because they have tons of experience and focused on Toyota parts specifically. They advertised their kit on Tacoma World Forums and detailed the development and build process for this kit. Reading about the research and development of the entire kit instilled huge confidence in the fitment and performance for me.

I installed everything on my own and the entire process was simple. The fitment of the kit was great and the JDFabrication team was easy to get ahold of if I had questions and their customer service was the best.

My Tacoma with long travel handles great on-road and performs effortlessly off-road. Long travel allows my truck to ride smoothly over rough terrain and helps me crawl over larger obstacles.

2. Kiet: RCLT HD

3rd Gen Tacoma With RCLT LT Kit & 40" Mud Terrain Tires

  • RCLT HD 2.75 | RCV Axles 2.75
  • King Suspension Long Travel | 3.0x16x600 lb Spring Coil Over
  • Chevy 63 Swap Rear Ruffstuff Specialties Kit w/ Chevy 63 3 Leaf Spring Kit
  • Archive Garage Shock Relocation | 2.5×14 Kings Smooth Bodie Shocks
  • Duro Bump Stops
  • Crown Performance 28-inch Steel Braided Extended Brake Lines

I mainly like to do rock crawling but also still want a smooth ride off-road and the RCLT was the perfect kit for that. The specs speak for themselves, with every piece being extremely heavy-duty.

The RCLT brings the entire wheel forward 2″ in order to clear 40″ tires (paired with a little tubbing). It also introduces a bigger, stronger steering rack (Land Cruiser 200 series) that is double-sheared and heimed. The clearance on the RCLT is superior to any long travel kit on a Tacoma due to the way the lower arm is made.

Money was definitely a factor as I’ve always wanted to go past 37s. This meant needing to upgrade to beefier components like the steering rack. Considering how the only other option is a modified Tundra rack and Heims can cost $2500-3000, it didn’t make sense. As I tried to find alternatives to the RCLT kit, I kept ending up at a similar price point. Plus, the RCLT is streamlined being an all-inclusive kit.

My rear setup is very simple; how can I build it to where it’s still comfortable, extremely capable, and cheap? The Chevy 63 swap was the answer considering how dirt cheap it is for the insane amount of performance you get. The 63 swap was able to get used to the entire 14 smooth-body shocks in the rear.

Going to a 3-link would be the better choice, but the amount of money needed for that far exceeded the benefits. You get a better bang for the buck with the 63 swap. Since I mainly rock crawl than desert dune, it just made more sense.

3. Scott Molina: Dirt King

3rd Gen Tacoma With Dirt King Long Travel Kit

  • Dirt King Long Travel Kit
  • Front Coil Overs
  • Rear Triple Bypass
  • 2.0×2.0 Bump Stops
  • Deaver Leaf Springs

Starting off in the front, I have a custom Dirt King long travel kit with King Suspension spec coil overs. I also have the bypass hoop installed, just not the bypasses yet.

In the rear, I have the complete Dirt King long travel and bed cage paired with the King Suspension triple bypass. The frame is boxed in from the cab back for more strength and C-notched for an extra 2″ of bump travel. There are also King bump stops mounted at the top of the notch.

All in all, this has made for a great setup both on-road and off-road.

4. Heather & Alex: Total Chaos

2nd Gen Tacoma With Long Travel - Drop Test

  • Total Chaos +3.5 Race Kit w/ 2.5 8″ Coilover and 2.5 8″ Bypass
  • Gusseted Spindles
  • Heim Steering
  • Dirt King Spring-Under Kit w/ Currie Fabricated Ford 9″

We found that we really enjoyed going fast more than anything else off-road. Then, we realized that a large number of components on a basically stock Tacoma really can’t handle that kind of a beating. For example, we destroyed our engine mounts and completely murdered our core support. We ended up replacing it with a custom tube structure in the hopes that it would help hold the truck together.

Unfortunately, we still had issues and needed to move our battery to the bed to keep it from crashing all the way through our inner fender. It was at that point we knew we needed to do something to stop chasing problems and instead get ahead of them. Long travel was that something.

We did as much research as we could with the little knowledge that we had at the time. After being told we couldn’t go wrong with any of the big three brands, we settled on Total Chaos because of their solid reputation and passion for Toyotas. We also figured that the best way to learn something was to jump headfirst into it. It was advised that we upgrade the rear end at the same time, but you know how money can be.

We were really enjoying our front upgrades. Once we were able to get the bypasses installed, we immediately started jumping the truck and pushing it further and further each time. Well, that advice about getting rear long-travel came back to bite us when we discovered our rear axle housing was bent and the internals were completely destroyed.

We went back and forth quite a bit on whether to 3-link the truck now that we needed to replace our entire axle assembly or go with our original plan to go spring-under.

In the end, it came down to cost and the desire to be able to get the upgrades we needed while still having funds available for the “unexpected”.

We’d always liked the Dirt King kit with its frame notch that allows for more up travel. We’ve seen how well their truck can boogie, so we went with that. Again, head first all the way. We literally just got our truck back after installation, so we’re still feeling out of capability. Plus, with the new axle assembly, we have to properly break in the new gears.

So far, we are loving the feel of the truck and are excited to see what it can really do.

5. Josh Oats: Dirt King

Lifted Long Travel 3rd Gen Tacoma With C4 Fabrication Hybrid Bumper, Amber Lighting, Custom Vinyl Wrap, Dirt King Long Travel & Fiberglass Fenders

  • +3.5 Long Travel Kit
  • Upper Control Arms
  • Lower Control Arms
  • Bypass Hoops
  • 8” Coilovers with 600lb Springs
  • Triple Bypasses
  • Hydro Bump Stops
  • 14” Rear Triple Bypasses
  • 2” Stroke Hydro Bump Stops
  • Solo Motorsports Tundra Steering Rack with Clevis Upgrade and Double Sheers

I chose Dirt King because they’re one of the top brands you can really choose from. When you see their kits in person you see the attention to detail these guys put into these kits.

I chose Locked for shocks because I’ve had them for years and they’ve never let me down. Their shocks are fully serviceable and rebuildable and they use quality materials and parts. The owner, Riley, truly cares about all of his customers and does everything he can to make sure everyone is taken care of and loves their shocks and bump stops. I love the products so much that I became a dealer for them and I’m fortunate to now call Riley a very good friend of mine. Hit me up for the best deal on your Locked set up.

I opted for the Tundra steering rack from Solo Motorsports because it looked like it was the most well-put-together conversion for the Tacoma and I have to say that their kit is really nice. I did as many supporting mods as possible for the LT but also for the 37s.

Final Thoughts

3rd Gen Pre-Runner Tacoma with Long Travel

And that wraps up this week’s Taco Tuesday on LT!

While long travel suspension might not be for everyone, it has its place in the off-road community. Due to its cost, most of us can only dream, but the way it elevates the ride comfort and turns rock climbing into a breeze is truly remarkable. If you’re into moving and crawling fast, this upgrade can seriously up your game.

Trucks with long travel kits look so good – the truck’s mid-size form paired with huge tires and crazy suspensions are something straight out of our childhood imaginations, and we love it.

2005-2015 Toyota Tacoma Long Travel Kit

Introducing the new All Pro High Clearance Long Travel Suspension! Engineered to get 12” of wheel travel while extending the track width by 2” per side, this new Long Travel Kit has been completely redesigned to give you an additional 2 inches of ground clearance. Our long travel features 4130 Chromoly tubular lower arms & upper control arms . The Lower Control Arms (LCAs) have been boxed and plated for added strength, durability and skid protection on the trail. Our LCA’s feature a 1” uniball that replaces the factory lower ball joint. The 2” wider Upper Control Arms (UCAs) feature an industry leading 1.25” uniball for maximum articulation & travel. We use heat-treated 17-4 stainless steel misalignment spacers to adapt the uniball to the factory spindle. The LCAs & UCAs pivot on polyurethane bushings and have zerk fittings for easy lubrication.

From rocks to sand and everything in between, this long travel kit does it all without sacrificing comfort, quality, and performance. Tested on some of the hardest trails around, including the Hammers, Rubicon, and Moab, the All-Pro LT kit is built tough!

Chromoly Axle Shafts (not included)

Our extended heat treated 4340 chromoly axle shafts, made by Currie Enterprises, are required for 4×4 applications. They are inserted into the factory inner and outer CVs to retain 4WD. These are not included in the kit and must be purchased separately. Please specify vehicle when ordering.

Timbren Bumpstops (not included)

All-Pro has teamed up with Timbren SES to offer an upgraded bumpstop for use with our LT kit, or even stock. They are made of a softer compound than their usual offerings for weight carrying, and they provide a smoother, stop than the factory bumpstop without needlessly limiting travel. Recommended for 33”+ tires. These are not included in the kit and must be purchased separately.

Long Travel Shocks (not included)

Long Travel Shocks are required for our Long Travel Kit.  For best results, we recommend Fox 2.5 Factory Series Remote Reservoir Long Travel Coilover Shocks or the Fox 2.5 Factory Series Remote Reservoir Long Travel Coilover Shocks with DSC Adjustment.

Tuning Options

Street Tune  - For smooth on-road and off-road use. NO TOWING/Heavy Loads without adjusters on the shocks. This is our most popular tune for those wanting a smooth ride for mainly street, with some off-road. HD Street Tune  - For vehicles with taller lifts or carrying heavy loads without adjusters. Moderate off-road use. Trail Tune  - For vehicles wanting to drive faster off-road or needing better handling. Great for a more dedicated off-road vehicle. Tuning Options from AccuTune Offroad are based on several factors including the vehicles weight, terrain preference and driving style. The Street Tune, HD Street and Trail Tune provide us with a starting point, and from there we fine tune the valving accordingly. Each shock is custom tuned specific to your vehicle based on the information you provide us. Tuning stages start at Street Tune and go up to Trail Tune. Each step up in stage will stiffen the valving resulting in better handling, better off-road capability, and better bottoming control at the expense of comfort, especially on the street. Bigger tires and lower air pressures can compensate for the stiffer valving.

Now available for the second generation Tacoma!  JD Fabrication has designed and engineered a high clearance long travel kit that provides the best of all worlds for the Tacoma.  From high speed desert to rock crawling and overlanding this kit does it all while maintaining OE street drive-ability.  In the past you were often forced to decide between building a go fast desert rig or a more trail focused rock crawler.  The Toyota Tacoma armed with this kit gives you the best of both worlds in a package that can be comfortably street driven daily.

The first issue the IFS Tacoma has in the rocks is ground clearance, specifically the low hanging control arms.  On 4x4 trucks the lower arm has to hang lower than desired in order to clear the front axles and CV's.  We took this into consideration when designing our new kit and the solution was to design a "pocket" in the lower arm that the outer CV can sit in thus allowing the arm to gain back the ground clearance typically lost on 4x4 IFS trucks.  This design gained almost 4" of ground clearance underneath the control arms!

The second issue with factory Tacoma suspension is the available travel range.  For off-road applications its ideal to have equal parts up travel as down travel.  From the factory the tacoma has more up travel than drop out and this is only made worse once the truck is lifted.  For example your typical tacoma with 2-3" lift only has about 2-3" of dropout which makes for a harsh ride off-road.  To fix this problem we have changed the travel range to increased dropout and bottom out sooner.  This solution has another huge benefit when adding larger sized tires.  Anything larger than a 32" tire will smash into the factory core support at full bump.  The standard bandaid to this problem is a bump stop spacer but the trade off is decreased wheel travel.  When going to a 35" tire this problem becomes much worse and over time the core support will eventually start breaking apart as a result of the tire smashing into it.  Our kit slightly limits the up travel to prevent this from happening while increasing the dropout so you still have a full 13" of useable wheel travel.  While the factory CV's can handle the increased dropout we strongly recommend up grading to our 934 CV kit for a bullet proof front end.

The third issue with the factory suspension are the rubber bushings Toyota uses for the lower control arms.  Tacomas are notorious for destroying the lower control arm bushings and the reason is simple- the truck is aligned via the lower control arm.  Because the alignment is done with the lower control arms often times the bushings are forced into unnatural positions that create side loads.  The combination of the side loading and suspension travel is very hard on the bushings.  Larger tires and off-road use really magnify the problem and the result is premature bushing wear which necessitates constant alignments.  With our kit we use 1" uniballs which allow for side loading without issue.  We machine custom barrels that accept the uniballs without the need for the standard cup.  The really neat part about the barrels is the fact that they are designed to accept custom seals so you no longer have to worry about having uniballs exposed to the elements.

The OEM style outer ball joints are great for the factory applications however the stress of larger tires, heavy vehicles and off-road abuse can lead to catastrophic failure.  Traditionally 1" uniballs have been used in place of factory style ball joints but we decided to take it one step further!  While 1" uniballs are known for their strength they are notorious for premature wear due to the elements.  After countless hours of R&D we have come up with what we believe to be the perfect combination of strength and longevity- introducing the "JD Joint!"  We start with the highest quality 1" FK uniball available, the WSSX16T.  From there we machine our own proprietary 4130 uniball cups and that's where the magic happens.  Our cups are machined to accept a 4340 top cap that slides in before the uniball is pressed into the cup.  Not only does the top cap seal the uniball from the elements it also provides a bearing surface for the ball to ride on.  The additional bearing surface dramatically increases the strength and life of the uniball by distributing the load of the ball on the increased surface area.  We also included a zerk fitting on the top cap so a teflon based lubricant can be applied to the underside of the top cap.  Due to the design of the sealed top cap a standard bolt can not be used to attach the a-arm to the spindle.  Our solution incorporates custom grade 9, 12 point bolts with machined wrench flats on the bolt shank which can be torqued without needing to access the top of the bolt.  We also use custom machined misalignment spacers with the factory spindle taper so your a-arms bolt right to the spindle with ZERO drilling or modifications.

In addition to all the problems this kit solves the strength of the kit is unparalleled.  All kits are constructed of a combination 1/8" and 3/16" cromoly plate that is laser cut and bent for perfect fitment.  The lower arms are built with a complex internal rib structure that is 100% welded inside and out.  We also tapered the front face of the lower arm to help them slide over rocks if need be.  Secondary bypass shock tabs, bumpstop pads and limit strap tabs are all standard too.  Off the shelf 8" King coilovers are used in the kit and we include custom fabricated coilover top hats that bolt into the factory mount.  All hardware, extended brake lines, steering extensions and limit straps are also included in the kit.  All kits come powder coated and ready to bolt on.

The kit also has two different upper arm options, the first budget friendly option uses the standard OE style bushing and the second uses sealed uniballs.  Both styles utilize the same 1.5" DOM tubing construction and custom Tacoma 1" taper EMF outer uniballs.

We recognize that long travel kits are no longer just for the go fast desert guys and we were very specific with selecting the 2.25" length to extend the arms.  For guys that are hitting tight, hardcore trails we recommend using a wheel with an offset close to stock as fiberglass will not be required.  If you are more geared towards the wide open desert then a negative offset wheel can be run with fiberglass for a very aggressive look.  This is also a very daily driver friendly kit with minimal maintenance required thanks in part to the sealed uniball systems.  The lower arm also pushes the spindle forward 7/8" which aids in tire clearance as well as increases caster.

If you are after the ultimate Tacoma IFS front end we recommend adding our lower control arm pivot kit, 934 CV kit, bypass shock mounts, upper arm double shear kit, spindle gussets and complete steering solution.

  • 2024 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro: The technology
  • 2024 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro: The drive
  • Is the 2024 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro a good truck?

I don't know when acrobatic monster trucks started packing sports stadiums with screaming fans or when high-speed, open-desert races became big spectator draws. But right now, brand-new lifted four-wheel-drive pickups with oversized tires and Baja-racing-inspired, long-travel suspensions have joined the lineups of several truckmakers.

That includes Toyota.

With the redesigned 2024 Tacoma TRD Pro, Toyota doubles down on the high-speed-capable, off-road-ready version of its midsize truck, offering a hybrid powertrain and off-road-racing IsoDynamic front seats. It battles similarly positioned rivals from Chevrolet, Ford, GMC, and Jeep for desert-driving and rock-crawling supremacy.

Is the new 2024 Tacoma TRD Pro the real deal, and does it live up to the reputation the truck has built for Toyota over the years? I headed for the wilds of Arizona and California to find out.

Rear-quarter view of a dark gray 2024 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro parked on a desert road with a cactus and mountains in the background.

Toyota's Heroic Off-Roader Isn't Cheap

The 2024 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro comes exclusively in a crew-cab configuration with a 5-foot cargo bed, a part-time four-wheel drive (4WD), and Toyota's i-Force Max hybrid powertrain. The truck's base price is in the mid-$60,000s, including the destination charge to ship the Tacoma from the Guanajuato, Baja California, Mexico, assembly plant to your local dealership.

For this review, I test-drove two examples of the Tacoma TRD Pro. Part of the driving took place in Southern California, and later I spent a week driving one in Arizona on a mixture of paved roads and off-road trails. The Arizona test truck had one option: a two-tone dark gray and black exterior. The manufacturer's suggested retail price of the test vehicle came to $65,895, including the $1,495 destination charge.

Toyota provided the vehicles for this Tacoma TRD Pro review and paid for airfare, lodging, and meals during the evaluation period.

The Tacoma TRD Pro Makes a Big First Impression

The 2024 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro is hard to ignore. Measuring more than 6 feet from the road to the roof and nearly 18 feet from bumper to bumper, the TRD Pro stands tall and proud on lifted suspension and 33-inch off-road tires.

The truck's front exterior features heritage-inspired styling, fog lamps, a high-clearance front bumper, and a power-dome hood. At the rear, a steel bumper with a hitch receiver, dual exhaust outlets, and frame-mounted recovery hooks convey the TRD Pro's mission.

Inside, the TRD Pro mixes functionality with flash, featuring carbon fiber; contrast stitching; and plenty of good old-fashioned buttons, knobs, and switches.

Tacoma TRD Pro: Offering a Front Seat to Adventure

There are no running boards that might run afoul of big rocks or stumps in the wild, so getting into the Tacoma TRD Pro requires a big step up. Once inside, you'll find Iso-Dynamic Performance front seats inspired by Baja racing. They have adjustable integrated suspension systems to improve comfort when driving off-road, helping to reduce sharp vertical and side-to-side jolts when traversing uneven terrain or jumping the truck and landing at high speeds.

Toyota trims the front seats in SofTex artificial leather , and they include heating, ventilation, and eight-way power adjustment. The driver faces a heated tilting and telescoping TRD-themed steering wheel with a red stripe at the 12 o'clock position. That stripe shows when the front wheels are pointed straight ahead, which is good to know when you're airborne.

The Tacoma TRD Pro Is an Off-Road Toy That Doesn't Forget Its Truck Utility

Despite its sporty look and off-road tuning, the Tacoma TRD Pro remains a workhorse pickup with four doors, a roomy cargo bed, and a rear seatback that folds down for carrying cargo out of the elements. However, there's no storage underneath the rear seat cushions because the TRD Pro's hybrid propulsion battery lives there.

From what I saw during my time with the truck, Tacoma offers plenty of in-cab storage, including a small shelf on the passenger's side of the dashboard. I was told the cargo bed is 21.2 inches deep and 53 inches wide but only 44.7 inches between the wheel wells.

The truck includes other useful features, such as a deck rail system, four adjustable tie-down hooks, a bed storage box, LED bed lighting, and a 2,400-watt 120-volt power outlet.

2024 Toyota Tacoma Offers Useful Everyday Tech Plus a Big Screen

The redesigned 2024 Tacoma has the latest Toyota Audio Multimedia (TAM) infotainment system with a standard 14.0-inch touchscreen.

The truck comes with available Drive Connect, a connected-services plan providing access to a cloud-based navigation system with maps, Google point-of-interest data, and an intelligent digital assistant that can respond to naturally spoken voice requests. Wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity are available as well.

The TRD Pro's standard 10-speaker JBL premium audio system offers big sound to go with the truck's big personality. One neat feature for tailgating fans is a removable portable Bluetooth speaker, which can operate for six hours when undocked and fully charged.

The new truck additionally features advanced technologies such as an optional digital key for your smartphone and a 3D Multi-Terrain Monitor that provides an overhead view and selectable front, rear, and side camera views. During my off-road driving, this feature helped me maneuver the large and tall truck in tight quarters and see better over the hood.

Standard Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 Covers All the Basics and Then Some

Every Tacoma TRD Pro has Toyota Safety Sense 3.0 (TSS 3.0). This collection of advanced driver-assistance systems includes the features you expect to find on any new vehicle, plus a technology called Proactive Driving Assist (PDA).

PDA can apply slight steering and braking to help drivers maintain safe distances from other vehicles or objects, even when they're not using TSS 3.0's adaptive cruise control and lane-centering assist. The system was helpful when I encountered an unexpected sharp curve on a rural two-lane highway. It scrubbed off some speed before entering the curve, which was good because just around the corner was a slow-moving farm tractor.

In addition, the Tacoma TRD Pro has front and rear parking sensors and a low-speed automatic braking system. They are helpful given the Tacoma's tall hood and less-than-ideal sight lines.

Regarding crash-test ratings, as of publication, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration has not rated the 2024 Tacoma. However, the Insurance Institute for Highway Safety names the Tacoma crew cab a Top Safety Pick for the 2024 calendar year.

Close-up view of the Fox QS3 2.5-inch internal bypass shock absorber on a 2024 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro.

The Tacoma TRD Pro Is Bigger to Better Handle the Most Challenging Terrain

The TRD Pro's i-Force Max powertrain has a turbocharged 2.4-liter four-cylinder gas engine, an electric motor making 48 horsepower integrated into an eight-speed automatic transmission, and a 1.87-kilowatt-hour battery. These components supply up to 326 horsepower at 6,000 rpm and 465 pound-feet of torque starting at 1,700 rpm.

Console controls provide access to the TRD Pro's standard part-time four-wheel-drive system. It includes an electronically controlled two-speed transfer case with shift-on-the-fly capability and an electronic locking rear differential. There is also a switch for the TRD Pro's standard front stabilizer disconnect mechanism, which provides added wheel articulation over challenging terrain.

Moving to the chassis, the TRD Pro features a long-travel double-wishbone front suspension and a coil-spring multilink rear setup with a live rear axle. Fox QS3 2.5-inch internal-bypass shock absorbers with tunable compression settings handle damping duties. At the rear, remote damping fluid reservoirs are designed to help avoid heat buildup on rough terrain, and hydraulic rear bump stops help mitigate hard landings.

On the test-drive, I was told the TRD Pro has quick-ratio electric power steering, ventilated four-wheel-disc brakes with large-diameter front rotors, and grippy 33-inch tall 265/70R-18 Goodyear Wrangler Territory rugged-terrain tires wrapped around black 18-inch alloy wheels. Running clearance measures a generous 11.5 inches. In addition, the TRD Pro can tow up to 6,000 pounds and haul up to 1,680 pounds of payload.

Front-quarter view of a dark gray 2024 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro driving on a desert trail with rock-covered mountains in the background.

The TRD Pro Is as Off-Road-Capable as It Looks

I drove the truck on a pair of challenging off-road courses zig-zagging through the foothills of Southern California's San Ysidro Mountains southeast of San Diego.

The first course was slow and technical, with big elevation changes and sharp turns. I shifted into neutral, chose 4WD Low, and selected the Multi-Terrain Select system's Off-Road mode. Once the truck got moving, the big Goodyears provided seamless traction over the loose dirt on flat sections.

I stopped just short of the first hill's crest to turn on the Multi-View camera to see where the trail went on the other side. I then engaged Downhill Assist Control to help me manage the upcoming steep descent. In other sections of the course with big rocks and overhanging tree limbs, I used Crawl Control, a low-speed off-pavement cruise control that allows the driver to concentrate on steering around obstacles while it manages acceleration and braking duties.

The higher-speed driving course got my blood pumping. Sure, the TRD Pro has lots of wheel travel, a reinforced frame, and Baja-racing-inspired dampers, but catching several feet of air off a blind precipice is all theory until one actually does the deed. That's when that red stripe marking 12 o'clock on the steering wheel pays off. One thing you don't want to do while airborne is try to land with the wheels pointed in any direction but straight.

The return to terra firma proved anticlimactic. Both the well-tuned compression damping of the shocks and the steadying force of the IsoDynamic front seats took the sting out of the landing, which the truck stuck in fine form with no rebounding or squirrelly dynamics.

Rear-quarter view of a dark gray 2024 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro parked in the desert with cacti and mountains in the background.

When driving the TRD Pro on the paved roads of civilization, this midsize truck felt larger than expected. Due to the tall hood, the sightlines weren't great, and I had to take it easy to avoid running over the solar accent lamps alongside my driveway. Maneuverability was also a challenge with the TRD Pro's wide turning diameter.

But when used as a daily driver, the truck's power is surprisingly generous and the hybrid powertrain emits an unexpectedly melodic baritone burble. According to my stopwatch, the TRD Pro can accelerate from zero to 60 mph in just over 6 seconds.

At the factory-spec damper settings, the on-road ride is firm but not punishing. The long-travel suspension and IsoDynamic front seats take the edge off vertical impacts, and parking lot speed bumps are but an amusement. Also, the rugged-terrain tires are surprisingly quiet at speed, producing minimal amounts of road sizzle on highway pavement.

When driving the truck gently, I could coax the TRD Pro's trip computer up to an indicated 25 mpg when traveling over flat ground at speeds between 35 and 55 mph. Most of the time, it displayed a number in the 18 to 21 mpg range when keeping pace with traffic flow. Fuel economy sank into the 16 to 18 mpg range when I drove the truck with zest.

Side view of a dark gray 2024 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro parked in the desert with trees and mountains in the background.

This Truck Is Baja Born and Baja Ready

If the expansive trails of the desert Southwest are an amusement park, consider the all-new 2024 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro to be the roller coaster. It's a sturdy truck with gobs of low-end grunt, good towing capacity, and the ability to tackle rugged terrain with relative ease. It should have no trouble competing with the Chevrolet Colorado ZR2, Ford Ranger Raptor , GMC Canyon AT4X, and Jeep Gladiator Mojave .

The TNGA-F Platform Provides A Strong Foundation For The New Toyota Tacoma

  • The 2024 Toyota Tacoma becomes one of the first electrified midsize pickup trucks to hit the market.
  • Toyota has its eyes set on the U.S. market with this release.

Forget minor tweaks with nips and tucks along the edges; the new 2024 Toyota Tacoma was redesigned from the ground up on the TNGA-F global truck platform. This platform is shared with the Tundra and Sequoia but was adjusted to fit the midsize Tacoma. When the design team created this new generation of the Tacoma, they built it to be utilized in the U.S. market, making it a truck ideal for wide open spaces , long road trips, and cross-country travel.

2024 Toyota Tacoma Highlights

  • High-strength boxed, steel-ladder frame
  • Additional off-road features
  • Multi-link coil rear suspension
  • Two turbocharged four-cylinder engines
  • Added Trailhunter trim
  • Return of the PreRunner trim

The TNGA-F platform increases rigidity over the previous generation. This is accomplished using high-strength steel with blanking and laser welds utilized throughout the chassis. Toyota also utilized aluminum in the upper body to save weight and make this truck more agile on and off the roads.

This new Tacoma goes on sale later this year as part of the 2024 model year. Those looking for the Toyota Tacoma Hybrid with the i-Force MAX powertrain will have to wait until early 2024 for the hybrid version to be available.

Toyota introducing its newest i-Force MAX powertrain to this hybrid off-roader will certainly be a selling point for the brand. We'd expect this to be a draw for drivers and a point of jealousy among other competitors. Again, you'll need to wait until Q1 of 2024 to buy a Tacoma with this, so keep up with the company's press releases and website.

The New Toyota Tacoma Hybrid Is A Mid-size Force To Be Reckoned With

  • Toyota has added i-Force MAX hybrid powertrain technology to the 2024 Tacoma Hybrid.
  • The new trucks will include a 2.4 liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine.

The biggest news surrounding the new Tacoma is the addition of the i-Force MAX hybrid powertrain . This system gives us a hybrid Toyota truck that’s powerful, capable, and should be relatively efficient. We’ll leave the efficiency numbers alone and focus on the fun stuff. This new Toyota hybrid pickup truck includes a 2.4-liter turbocharged four-cylinder engine with a 48-horsepower electric motor integrated into the 8-speed automatic transmission.

The electric motor is powered by a 1.87-kWh NiMH battery pack, allowing the Tacoma to deliver 326 horsepower and 465 pound-feet of torque.

2024 Toyota Tacoma Hybrid Performance and Specs

With the i-Force MAX powertrain, the Toyota Tacoma Hybrid can tackle an 8-percent interstate grade without needing to downshift, making your long road trips easier and more pleasant. The Tacoma reaches max towing capacity in the SR5 trim TRD PreRunner XtraCab models with the hybrid powertrain. These models provide up to 6,500 pounds of towing, which is more than enough to take a boat or trailer to the lake for a weekend full of fun.

Toyota Tacoma: The Ultimate Truck For Legendary Off-Road Adventures

  • The 2024 Tacoma Hybrid boasts many new additions and features.
  • This high-performance truck will do well off-road and driving on/through hills.

Generations of Tacoma owners turned to this midsize truck for its off-road prowess, durability, and capability. Toyota takes these qualities and turns them up several notches, not just in the new hybrid version of this Toyota truck, but across the lineup. Some of the off-road features you’ll find in this new midsize Toyota include:

  • Front disconnecting stabilizer bar
  • Trail cameras
  • Multi-Terrain Monitor
  • Rear recovery hooks
  • Underbody protection
  • Crawl Control – low-speed, off-road cruise control
  • Downhill Assist Control

The new front disconnecting stabilizer bar enables the Tacoma to increase wheel articulation by 10 percent compared to the outgoing model. This feature is compatible with Toyota-approved lift kits, ensuring owners always have their desired level of off-road capability. The TRD Pro trim offers the maximum off-road clearance and angles.

2024 Toyota Tacoma Off-Road Angles

The TRD Pro comes standard with the i-Force Max hybrid powertrain , making it one of the first off-road hybrid Toyota trucks. The Multi-Terrain Select system is now functional in 4WD-High and 4WD-Low, providing more capability when stuck in the mud or crossing terrain at higher speeds.

The New Toyota Tacoma Hybrid Trailhunter Trim Tops The Charts

  • The 2024 Toyota Tacoma 'Trailhunter' will boast a five-six-foot bed in the double cab configuration.
  • The Trailhunter trim also features the i-Force MAX powertrain.

For the first time, overlanding enthusiasts will have a pickup truck suited to their needs right from the factory. The Tacoma Trailhunter trim features the i-Force MAX powertrain and brings a plethora of standard overlanding features with it. This truck comes with a five or six-foot bed in the Double Cab configuration. Those with serious overlanding goals will likely choose the heavy-duty version of the full ARB bed rack that supports additional gear, including rooftop tents, canopies, or a camp shower.

Toyota worked with Australian-based ARB to develop many of the overlanding features of the new Tacoma Trailhunter . Some of these items include:

  • Old Man Emu (OME) position-sensitive 2.5-inch forged monotube shocks with rear external piggyback style remote reservoirs
  • A steel rear bumper
  • Robust rear recovery points
  • A bed utility bar with removable MOLLE panels

The OME shocks and a set of 33-inch Goodyear Territory R/T tires provide an additional two inches of lift to the Trailhunter, giving this Toyota Tacoma Hybrid a boost to ride over some of the toughest terrain and obstacles . The Trailhunter model also comes with a high-clearance trail exhaust and a low-profile high-mount Trailhunter Air Intake to ensure owners can fully use the ground clearance offered in this truck.

The New TRD Pro Is An Incredible New Toyota Hybrid Pickup Truck

  • This model is better suited for off-roading than some of Tacoma's previous releases.
  • The 2024 Toyota Tacoma Hybrid will be one of the better electric trucks on the market come its debut.

The new 2024 Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro is more than just a hybrid Toyota truck. This new model elevates its position as a desert-running, off-road-oriented truck. Toyota provides this new off-roader with a set of rear disc brakes, which have been missing for a long time, but also gives it the off-road gear that makes most outdoor enthusiasts drool. Some of what you’ll find in the TRD Pro include:

  • Red aluminum front TRD upper control arms
  • Fox internal bypass 2.5-inch manual modal Quick Switch 3 shocks
  • The new multi-link rear suspension
  • Fox Internal Floating Piston bump stops
  • Black flow-formed TRD wheels
  • 33-inch Goodyear Territory R/T tires

The TRD Pro sits two inches higher in the front and 1.5 inches higher in the rear than the Tacoma SR5. This off-road champion is also three inches wider than the lower trims of the new Tacoma. The new Toyota Tacoma Hybrid TRD Pro is more than a better off-road truck; it’s also much more comfortable. The TRD Pro brings a segment-first IsoDynamic Performance Seat to the mix, giving the driver and front passenger added comfort and a smoother ride on tough terrain. These seats include two stabilizing adjustable shock absorbers to reduce fatigue on rugged trails. Talk about a game-changer!

While we wait for the Toyota Tacoma Electric and the conversation about Tacoma charging time, we can admire this new Toyota hybrid pickup truck with the addition of the Trailhunter trim, improved TRD Pro features, and a wide range of added capabilities that make Tacoma an easy choice for adventure-oriented shoppers.

Toyota Remains The King Of Hybrids

  • Toyota's 'Beyond Zero' initiative focuses on hybrids, EVs, PHEVs, and fuel-cell technology.
  • The brand will introduce a fully-electric lineup of vehicles in 2026.

It's no shock that Toyota will continue to dominate the hybrid market, including with the long-anticipated Tacoma Hybrid drop next year. As the date comes closer, we're sure Toyota will come out with new hybrids, EVs, and even PHEVs, as this is the future of the brand. Notably, Toyota has made a promise to introduce an entirely electric lineup by 2026, with race cars, SUVs, trucks, and even work vans in the group.

This marks a dawn of new, green technology coming out of Toyota factories, with many speculating the company will make a full switch from gas to electric by 2030. Also deemed 'Beyond Zero,' Toyota's plans for increasing EV production will begin with hybrid models taking over what once would have been solely fuel-powered cars, trucks, SUVs, etc. Of course, with iconic hybrids to its name like Prius (and now Tacoma), Toyota is taking a unique approach to climate change, with hybrids being the middle-ground for consumers.

Toyota is going green, just slower than some other auto brands. We suspect this could be due to them wanting to perfect batteries and specs for hybrids and full EVs, which could work in their favor.

Even if Toyota isn't boasting as many EVs as other companies for now, we'd still like to commend them for moving in the right direction. Major change takes time, so it doesn't surprise us that Toyota would choose to perfect its hybrid and EV tech before releasing it to the masses.

Why The Toyota Tacoma Hybrid Is Better Than Any Electric Truck

the hard part about staying around the moscow/pullman area is that its usually all forest service, bennets, or private owned. everything ive seen growing up in moscow is they are all gated, living down in lewiston now and it seems there is quite a bit more around here to explore.

1996-2004 TOYOTA TACOMA LONG TRAVEL SUSPENSION

Hungarian leader Viktor Orban visits Moscow, angering E.U. allies

With Hungary holding the European Union’s rotating presidency, the trip by Prime Minister Viktor Orban to see Vladimir Putin drew sharp disavowals in Brussels.

BRUSSELS — Fresh off his first visit to Ukraine since Russia invaded, Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban arrived in Moscow on Friday to meet Russian President Vladimir Putin — a striking break with the European Union’s collective foreign policy just days after Hungary took over the bloc’s rotating presidency.

Even before Orban’s plane touched down Friday, the trip drew sharp disavowals from Brussels.

Josep Borrell, the E.U.’s top diplomat, preemptively noted that the Hungarian leader’s travel is not official E.U. business and “takes place exclusively in the framework of bilateral relations between Hungary and Russia.”

But with Hungary now holding the rotating presidency of the Council of the European Union, the trip represented a diplomatic triumph for Putin, who has repeatedly accused NATO nations, particularly the United States, of prolonging the war he started. Putin has also blamed them for not forcing Ukraine to negotiate a surrender of territory that Russia has seized by force.

Greeting Orban at the Kremlin, Putin immediately stressed his guest’s leadership role in the E.U.

“‘Welcome to Moscow, to Russia,” Putin said. “I understand that you have come this time not only as our long-standing partner, but also as the president of the European Council. I hope we will have the opportunity to exchange ideas on building bilateral relations in this difficult situation and, of course, to talk about the prospects for the development of the biggest European crisis, I mean, on the Ukrainian track.”

In a three-hour-long meeting behind closed doors, the two leaders discussed “the shortest path to peace,” Orban said after the talks, according to Russian state media. From Moscow’s perspective, that path typically means Ukraine should capitulate to Russia’s demands to annex about one-fifth of Ukraine’s sovereign territory.

Putin on Friday rehashed his demands for ceasing hostilities, including Ukraine’s surrender of that territory, something that Ukrainian officials repeatedly deemed a non-starter. The Russian leader also took up a new line of attack, claiming that Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is “reluctant” to stop fighting because it would force the country to end martial law and hold presidential elections.

“For the authorities who have lost their ratings and legitimacy, the chances of winning them are close to zero,” Putin said. He offered no evidence to support his analysis of Ukrainian domestic politics. Recent polling has suggested that Ukrainians broadly support the war effort and oppose giving in to Russia’s demands — with nearly 75 percent believing that Ukraine will eventually succeed in liberating its territories.

Orban said his meeting with Putin took place “at a time when Europe really needs peace,” which “will not come by itself.”

Speaking Thursday at a meeting of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization in Astana, the capital of Kazakhstan, Putin suggested resuming negotiations that took place in Istanbul in 2022 shortly after Russia’s invasion when Ukraine was in a perilously weak position.

Those talks broke down after Russian forces retreated from their attempt to capture Kyiv, leaving behind evidence of atrocities against Ukrainian soldiers and civilians in Bucha, Irpin and other suburbs of the Ukrainian capital. Putin on Thursday accused Britain and the United States of directing Ukraine to end the negotiations — a charge that U.S. and British officials deny.

The six-month rotating presidency of the Council of the E.U. typically involves convening meetings and overseeing legislative minutiae in Brussels, not shuttling between foreign capitals at war. But Orban, a right-wing leader who prides himself as a proponent of “illiberal democracy” and has long clashed with other European leaders, is clearly intent on using the role as a platform.

Orban has repeatedly broken with other E.U. and NATO leaders by calling on Ukraine to consider making concessions to Russia, and he has refused to allow donated weapons to be transferred to Ukraine through Hungary, which shares a long border with Ukraine. Orban also has repeatedly slow-rolled the E.U.’s efforts to aid Kyiv and advance Ukraine’s application to join the bloc.

A spokesperson for Orban described Friday’s trip as a “peace mission” but did not offer other details on his purpose or plans.

Earlier Friday, Orban sought to justify his travel, writing on X that you “cannot make peace from a comfortable armchair in Brussels.”

“Even if the rotating EU-Presidency has no mandate to negotiate on behalf of the E.U., we cannot sit back and wait for the war to miraculously end,” he wrote. “We will serve as an important tool in making the first steps toward peace.”

Borrell, in his statement, stressed that Orban could not speak for the E.U.’s 26 other member countries. “The E.U. position on Russia’s war of aggression against Ukraine is reflected in many European Council conclusions,” he said. “That position excludes official contacts between the E.U. and President Putin. The Hungarian Prime Minister is thus not representing the E.U. in any form.”

When Orban visited Zelensky in Kyiv on Tuesday, there were no such clarifications. Instead, the E.U. flag was positioned prominently behind him along with the Hungarian and Ukrainian flags.

During the visit in Kyiv, Orban suggested that Ukraine should agree to a cease-fire with Russia as part of an effort to begin negotiations to end the fighting.

Zelensky has put forward a 10-point peace plan that does not include agreeing to a cessation of hostilities while Russian troops are still occupying Ukraine.

The cease-fire proposal that Orban pitched would leave Moscow in control of roughly one-fifth of Ukraine, potentially giving Moscow a chance to rearm and renew its efforts to seize more territory. Russia first invaded and illegally annexed Ukraine’s Crimean Peninsula in 2014. Eight years later, in February 2022, Putin launched a full-scale invasion seeking to capture Kyiv.

A number of European officials and leaders have dismissed the notion that Orban can play peacemaker, particularly on behalf of the E.U.

“The European Council is clear,” Charles Michel, president of the European Council, posted Thursday. “Russia is the aggressor, Ukraine is the victim. No discussions about Ukraine can take place without Ukraine.”

Orban, after meeting with Putin, acknowledged the difficult of reaching a peace deal. “We need to work for it,” he said. “The positions are far apart.”
