Explore the Hawaiian Islands

Four Pacific jewels, as dazzling as they are different.

Hawaiian Islands cruise with more value

Why settle for seeing just one island on a Hawaii resort-based vacation when you can cruise in style and explore multiple island jewels? Sailing with Princess is a far better vacation value, and you’ll visit popular Hawaiian islands —  Oahu ,  Kauai  and the Big Island ( Hilo  and  Kona ) — without all the time-consuming hassle of island hopping by plane. From enriching  Discovery and Animal Planet shore excursions  to our immersive "Aloha Spirit" program onboard, you'll discover each island's unique charm — and fall in love with Hawaii's enchanting beauty.

Oahu (Honolulu)

The most populous of the Hawaiian islands, bustling Oahu  offers attractions for visitors of all ages. Our sailings feature a special late night departure from Oahu, so you can spend a full day seeing the sights, then revel in Honolulu's exciting nightlife. From iconic Waikiki Beach to the enormous Ala Moana Shopping Center to the glorious Iolani Palace and poignant Pearl Harbor memorials, there’s certainly no shortage of things to do in "The Big Pineapple" of Hawaii!

Once the favorite playground of Hawaiian royalty, great warrior King Kamehameha chose to make  Maui's  Lahaina his capital after uniting the Hawaiian islands. Explore breathtaking Haleakala National Park that boasts diverse volcanic and rainforest landscapes, plus a 10,000 foot tall dormant volcano. Or sail out onto the scenic waters off Maui’s sun-kissed shores and witness in awe as humpback whales frolic about.

When it comes to  Kauai , good things come in small packages. Despite being the smallest of the four main islands, Kauai is home to the "Grand Canyon of the Pacific" Waimea Canyon, the lush Fern Grotto framed by Wailua River, and so much more. The stunning Na Pali Coast has served as the backdrop for Hollywood blockbusters, such as Jurassic Park and King Kong. With endless emerald landscapes, Kauai truly lives up to its nickname of "The Garden Island".

Nearly twice as big as all of the other Hawaiian islands combined, the Big Island ( Hilo and Kona ) is a paradise of black-sand beaches, tropical rainforests, and even snow-capped peaks at the soaring Mauna Kea summit. Feel the spiritual "mana" on a shore excursion in Waipi'o Valley, once the meeting place for Hawaiian kings and fabled to contain an otherworldly gate. At the famous Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, behold extraordinary lava landscapes and two of the world’s most active volcanoes.

The best time to cruise to Hawaii

Donna Heiderstadt

Hawaii is a year-round cruise destination known for its tropical weather and warm South Pacific waters teeming with sea life, so the best time to cruise to Hawaii is often whenever you can get there. But some months are hotter or rainier than others, specific time periods attract more crowds, and certain seasons are known for signature activities, such as whale watching and big-wave surfing.

Only one major line, Norwegian Cruise Line , offers year-round itineraries, but more than a half dozen others sail cruises to Hawaii from ports on the West Coast and in Hawaii during specific times of year. That means you'll have a greater selection of cruise dates and itineraries in certain months — generally October through April.

But when exactly is the best time to cruise Hawaii?

It depends on what you prioritize. The weather in Hawaii is generally at its most pleasant in April, May, September and October, but if you prefer it hot and dry, the best time to cruise Hawaii is from June to August. The best times to see whales are the winter months (January through March), but you'll likely experience some rain. The best times to cruise for low prices and great value are early November and early December.

It is worth repeating, however, that there isn't a bad time to set sail in Hawaii.

Here's a look at what you can expect when taking a cruise during each seasonal travel period in Hawaii. Knowing the general weather outlook and what natural phenomena or special events will be taking place can help you pick the right time to cruise for your travel group.

Hawaii's seasons

hawaii cruise in november

There are two main seasons in Hawaii: summer (May to October, when the average daytime temperature is 85 degrees) and winter (November to April, when the mercury dips slightly to an average of 78-80 degrees). Even at night temperatures rarely drop below 65-75 degrees.

Love to swim and snorkel? Seawater in Hawaii is generally around 74 degrees in winter and 80 degrees in summer, and dolphins frolic in Hawaii's waters year-round. Hawaii's latitude close to the equator also means sunset times have little variation, occurring between 6 p.m. and 7:15 p.m.

The wild card is precipitation, which divides the two main seasons into subsets. (See below.) Hawaii is known for its abundant sunshine and lush, tropical vegetation — and the latter needs rain. So yes, you're likely to encounter some showers during your visit to Hawaii but more so in some regions and during specific months. In December and January, the islands receive almost 3 inches of rain, while the tally is less than half an inch in June, July and August.

It's also important to note that each of the four major islands typically visited on a cruise — Oahu, Maui, Kauai and the island of Hawaii — have what are called windward and leeward sides. The windward sides, which are lusher and greener, get more rainfall, while the leeward sides are generally sunnier and warmer.

For example, on the island of Hawaii, many cruises call on both Hilo, located on the windward side and known for its rainforests and waterfalls, and Kona, located on the leeward side and known for its arid climate and lava landscapes. So, it's possible in a single day to experience endless sunshine on one side of an island and intermittent downpours on the other. But there's a silver lining: The Hawaiian Islands are famous for their incredible rainbows.

What about major tropical storms? Although hurricane season in the central Pacific runs from June through November, storms making a direct hit on the Hawaiian Islands are pretty rare. Just five hurricanes or tropical storms have caused major damage since 1950 — the most notable of which, Hurricane Iniki, devastated the island of Kauai in early September 1992.

Winter: January to March

Winter is peak season for tourism in Hawaii — even though it is also the rainiest period in the islands — so airfares and hotel room rates are apt to be high and popular attractions are likely to be crowded. Still, a chance to escape the cold blanketing much of the mainland U.S. from January to March means it's among the most-desired times to enjoy a visit to the Aloha State. You'll find the most cruise options during these months, and by booking well in advance (at least six months), you can likely snag a good-value cruise fare.

Weatherwise, daytime temperatures are comfortable at around 80 degrees, with nighttime lows of 65. Rainfall averages slightly less than 1 inch a month in Honolulu, but certain ports are more likely to experience showers than others. These include the aforementioned Hilo on the island of Hawaii and Nawiliwili on Kauai, where monthly rainfall averages 4-5 inches in December and January.

Winter is also the season to experience two of Hawaii's most incredible phenomena. One is the annual migration of more than 10,000 humpback whales to the waters around Maui, where females give birth to their young. The other is big-wave season (with swells as high as 30 feet) on the North Shore of Oahu, where professional surfers ride gigantic curls — the Banzai Pipeline being the most famous — during annual surf competitions in January and February.

Other events that can affect flight availability and crowds during this period are the Tournament of Champions PGA golf tournament at Kapalua on Maui and the All-Star Hula Bowl Classic Football Game on Oahu, both of which take place in January. Spring break in March is also a popular time for family vacations in Hawaii, so crowds can be expected.

Spring: April and May

hawaii cruise in november

The spring sweet spot, between the winter peak but before the summer onslaught, is a terrific time to take a Hawaii cruise, although there are slightly fewer sailings during these months. Since this is the shoulder season, cruise fares, airfares and hotel rates are generally well priced.

The weather is also more than likely to be ideal, with just an inch of rain or less per month on Oahu, Maui and the island of Hawaii and about 2 inches on Kauai. Temperatures will be in the high 70s to mid-80s.

Spring also marks the tail end of humpback season; cruisers on April and even early May sailings might be able to spot a few of these mammoth creatures hanging around before beginning their long journey up to Alaska . Travelers can also spot sea turtles on all the islands but especially around Maui and Lanai, as the waters warm with the approach of summer.

Traditionally, Japanese travelers have visited Hawaii in late April and early May during "Golden Week," when four Japanese holidays occur over a period of seven days. May 1 is also a statewide holiday in Hawaii known as Lei Day.

Summer: June to August

Summer is actually Hawaii's busiest season since the islands are extremely popular with both families and honeymooners. They are also at their warmest and driest. That's great if you like the heat (daytime highs approach 90 degrees in July and August) and prefer to swim in water that's almost as warm as the air. Calmer waters on the north shores of Oahu, Maui and Kauai also mean that some beaches are great for more than just surfing. And on land, less rain means safer trail conditions if hiking is on your Hawaii must-do list.

But summer is also least busy when it comes to cruise ship arrivals, with only Norwegian and Princess Cruises offering sailings from June to August (when most cruise lines move their Pacific-based ships to Alaska). Hotel occupancy is extremely high, so pre- and post-cruise stays can be pricey.

Summer festivals include the Ukulele Festival Hawaii on Oahu in July, Duke's OceanFest in Waikiki in late August and Koloa Plantation Days on Kauai in July. Bon season, an Obon dance tradition handed down by Japanese plantation workers, means bon dance events are held throughout the islands during the summer months. King Kamehameha Day (June 11) is a popular annual holiday in Hawaii.

During this time, turtles are also abundant in Hawaii's warm, calm waters since it's nesting season, while dolphins frequent Hawaiian waters year-round. So, while you'll miss the chance to see wintering humpback whales, there's still plenty of sea life to spot.

Early fall: September and October

hawaii cruise in november

Early fall is another shoulder season that offers good weather (as noted above, Hawaii is generally not in the path of storms during the central Pacific hurricane season) and fewer crowds. Cruise tourism to Hawaii begins to pick up again as cruise lines reposition ships from Alaska, and it's possible to find good-value fares during this time by booking well in advance or even last-minute. Airfare and hotel rates for pre- or post-cruise stays should be lower, too.

Weatherwise, September's rainfall is similar to that of the summer period, totaling less than half an inch on Maui, an inch on Oahu and the island of Hawaii, and 2 inches on Kauai. Rainfall is double those amounts in October but still less than in November and December.

Events to keep in mind when booking a cruise in September or October are the Ironman triathlon world championships, held annually in early October in Kona on the island of Hawaii, and several food and wine festivals, including the Hawaii Food & Wine Festival, which takes place in late October in Honolulu.

Late fall: November and December

Late fall and early winter in Hawaii bring a major influx of tourists over the Thanksgiving, Christmas and New Year's breaks. But the weeks in between are great times to snag deals on Hawaii sailings — early November for a less-harried ambience and early December for lower cruise fares and airfares. Yes, December is Hawaii's rainiest month, but it doesn't rain every day and certainly not all day. (The rain comes in small bursts and mostly after dark.) Temperatures can dip into the 60s at night on some islands.

Once the calendar page hits mid-December, however, Christmas and New Year's crowds begin arriving, and cruise, airfare and hotel room prices skyrocket. If you're on a tight budget or crowds annoy you, it's best not to book a holiday cruise.

Events to keep in mind include the annual Kona Coffee Cultural Festival on the island of Hawaii in early November and the Honolulu Marathon in early December.

If a post-Thanksgiving/pre-Christmas cruise in Hawaii sounds appealing, you're apt to encounter the arrival of the humpbacks during the first two weeks of December. The waves on Oahu's North Shore also begin to swell, making for dramatic photos. And seeing this palm tree-studded paradise decked out in holiday decorations, along with abundant tropical poinsettias in full seasonal bloom, makes for a memorable travel experience.

Bottom line

hawaii cruise in november

The best time to cruise Hawaii is the season or month that best suits your schedule, interests and/or budget.

If abundant sunshine is paramount (and you don't mind sharing paradise with lots of fellow visitors and are OK if temperatures approach 90 degrees), think summer — although you'll have fewer cruises from which to choose, and hotel rates will be high.

If you're looking to escape the cold and want to see whales, big waves and tropical Hawaii at its most lush (and don't mind a bit of rain), opt for winter, when most major cruise lines sail the islands. Again, expect to pay a premium, especially for a pre- or post-cruise hotel stay.

The two shoulder seasons, April-May and September-October, offer up a happy medium with pleasant weather and generally good prices. Lulls during early November and early December mean preholiday deals on flights and cruise fares are often available. These last three time periods are all the best times to cruise for overall value — even if you might miss seeing whales and ginormous North Shore waves.

Sean ‘diddy’ combs: timeline of the horrific abuse allegations leading to federal indictment.

Ten months after Sean “Diddy” Combs’ ex-girlfriend Cassie Ventura accused him of rape and physical abuse, the rap mogul found himself standing before a Manhattan federal judge Tuesday facing sweeping charges of sex-trafficking and racketeering conspiracy. Here’s how Combs, 54, ended up being held without bail on the indictment detailing nearly two decades of depravity:

A sketch of Sean "Diddy" Combs in Manhattan federal court on Sept. 17, 2024.

Nov. 16, 2023 — Combs’ ex-girlfriend Cassie accuses him of abuse in lawsuit

Cassie — an R&B singer once signed to Combs’ record label Bay Boy Records — filed a bombshell lawsuit accusing Combs of raping and physically abusing her for over a decade .

The songstress, whose real name is Casandra Ventura, claimed that Combs trafficked, raped and viciously beat her starting in 2005 and until 2018, according to the Manhattan federal lawsuit.

Combs' ex-girlfriend Cassie Venture accused him of abuse in a lawsuit in 2023.

The lawsuit, which was filed with a glaring “trigger warning,” said that Combs regularly fed her drugs and alcohol, and forced her to have sex with male prostitutes while he filmed the encounters, dubbed “Freak Outs.”

Cassie also charged that Combs blew up Kid Cudi’s car when he learned the rapper was romantically interested in her, according to the filing.

The pair had an on-and-off again relationship which started shortly after meeting in 2005, when she was around 22 and he neared 40.

Combs and Ventura settled the lawsuit a day later.

Nov. 17, 2023 — Combs reaches settlement with Ventura one day after suit is filed

Just one day after the federal lawsuit was filed, Combs and Cassie reached a settlement that “resolved the claims… to their mutual satisfaction.”

The terms of the settlement were not disclosed.

“We have decided to resolve this matter amicably. I wish Cassie and her family all the best,” Combs said in a statement at the time.

Here's what we know about the allegations against Sean "Diddy" Combs

  • Follow along with The Post’s live coverage of Sean “Diddy” Combs’ arrest
  • Sean “Diddy” Combs’ homes in Los Angeles and Miami were raided by Homeland Security in March amid a possible ongoing sex-trafficking investigation .
  • Authorities targeted the rapper’s homes to seize phones and computers, sources told The Post.
  • At least four Jane Does and one John Doe have been interviewed by New York prosecutors in connection to sex-trafficking allegations and a RICO case,  sources told Rolling Stone.
  • Combs’ ex-girlfriend Cassie (Cassandra Ventura) filed a lawsuit against him in November 2023 on several allegations, including rape and physical abuse for over a decade .
  • Combs and Cassie settled the lawsuit one day after she filed it.
  • In November 2023, the rapper was accused of drugging, filming and sexually assaulting a woman on a date in 1991.
  • A third woman filed a lawsuit against the celebrity in November 2023, claiming that he and singer-songwriter Aaron Hall took turns sexually assaulting her and a friend in the early 1990s.
  • In December 2023, Combs was hit with a fourth sexual assault lawsuit that accused him and others of sexually assaulting a 17-year-old girl at his NYC recording studio after drugging her and supplying her with alcohol.
  • In September 2024, Diddy was sued by Dawn Richard , a participant on Combs’ 2004 MTV show “Making The Band,” claiming that he once broke into her dressing room and began groping her breasts and butt.

Nov. 23, 2023 — Combs faces new allegations that he drugged and raped a woman in 1991

Similar allegations, but a different person.

Combs was accused by another woman of drugging and sexually assaulting her while on a date in 1991 and filming the attack.

The complaint, filed by Joi Dickerson-Neal, a former Syracuse University student, alleges Combs sexually assaulted her while out to dinner at Wells Restaurant in Harlem. The filing claims that Combs gave her drugs that put her in a “physical state where she could not independently stand or walk.”

A spokesperson for Combs denied the claims and called the lawsuit a “money grab.”

Nov. 24, 2023 — A third woman accused Combs of raping her and a friend in the early 1990s

A third woman, identified in a fresh complaint as Jane Doe, filed a lawsuit claiming that Combs and singer-songwriter Aaron Hall both took turns raping her and friend in the early 1990s .

The plaintiff said that she and her pal met Combs and Hall at an event hosted by MCA Records in New York City in 1990 or 1991.

Combs and Hall later invited the women to Hall’s apartment for an afterparty, where she was allegedly “coerced” into having sex with Combs, according to the lawsuit which was filed right before the expiration of the Adult Survivors Act.

“These are fabricated claims falsely alleging misconduct from over 30 years ago and filed at the last minute. This is nothing but a money grab,” a spokesperson for Combs said then.

Dec. 6, 2023 — Combs accused of drugging, gang-raping 17-year-old: lawsuit

Combs was hit with a fourth sexual assault lawsuit that accused him and others of gang-raping a 17-year-old girl at his Manhattan recording studio after flying her to the city and drugging her two decades ago.

The woman — who filed the suit anonymously in Manhattan federal court as Jane Doe — claims was was in the 11th grade when she was raped by Combs and Harve Pierre, the longtime president of his record label Bad Boys, and a third person in 2003.

Combs responded in a statement through his rep adamantly denying the claims, saying: “ENOUGH IS ENOUGH.”

Dec. 14, 2023 — Hulu cuts Combs’ reality show ‘Diddy+7’ amid sexual assault allegations

Combs was supposed to have a TV show, dubbed “Diddy+7,” with Hulu but the streaming giant decided the scrap the show due to his ongoing legal troubles, according to Variety.

The show was being produced by James Corden’s production company, Fulwelll 73.

Feb. 26, 2024 — Combs accused of sexual harassment, assault by male producer: $30M lawsuit

Producer Rodney “Lil Rod” Jones claimed in a $30 million lawsuit that Combs repeatedly sexually assaulted him while he was working on his latest album from Sept. 2022 to Nov. 2023.

The producer, who also worked as a videographer for Combs, charged that Combs would grope his genitals and touch his anus to groom him into having sex — and that Combs would downplay the assaults as “horseplay.”

Rodney "Lil Rod" Jones accused Combs of sexual abuse in a lawsuit.

Combs’ ex-girlfriend Yung Miami, also known as Caresha Rameka Brownlee, was later accused of transporting the drug known as “pink cocaine” for Combs in April 2023, according to an amended complaint earlier this year. Combs also allegedly paid Instagram influencer Jade Ramey a “monthly stipend” for sex work , the suit claimed.

March 25, 2024 — Combs’ Los Angeles, Miami homes raided by Homeland Security

Federal authorities raided Combs’ homes in Los Angeles and Miami.

Agents were seen arriving to the rap mogul’s properties in the Holmby Hills area of LA with guns drawn and leaving with boxes and bags of evidence, including electronics.

Law enforcement sources told The Post at the time that they moved in because they wanted to seize Combs’ phone and computers.

The media outside of Combs' Los Angeles home during a FBI raid on March 25, 2024.

Federal prosecutors said Tuesday they found guns, including three AR-15s with “defaced” serial numbers, ammunition and hundreds of bottles of baby oil and lube during the raids.

Combs’ attorney at the time blasted the feds’ raid , calling it a “witch hunt.”

May 17, 2024 — Video shows Combs beating then-girlfriend Cassie in hotel hallway in 2016

Surveillance video obtained by CNN was published showing Combs shoving, kicking and dragging this then-girlfriend Cassie Ventura in a hallway of the InterContiental Hotel in Los Angeles on March 5, 2016.

Combs can be seen running after Ventura with a bath towel draped around his waist before he grabs her by the back of the neck and throws her to the floor.

A video of Combs assaulting Ventura in a hall of a hotel.

As he holds the towel with one hand, he kicks her, the video shows — before grabbing a purse and suitcase, kicking her again and dragging her on the hallway’s carpet.

Combs allegedly paid the hotel $50,000 for the security footage.

Two days after the clip was made public, Combs posted a video on Instagram saying he took “full responsibility” for his “inexcusable” behavior and describing the footage as “disgusting.”

May 21, 2024 — Ex-model, TV star claims Combs drugged, sexually assaulted her in 2003

Crystal McKinney, who first rose to prominence after winning MTV’s inaugural “Model Mission” beauty pageant show in 1998, claims she kept her unwashed clothing from the night that Combs allegedly assaulted her wrapped in a plastic bag for more than two decades.

Combs pictured in Central Park a day before his arrest.

McKinney, who was 22 at the time, said Combs told her he could help “advance her modeling career” when she met him at a Men’s Fashion Week event in 2003. Combs allegedly forced her to perform oral sex on him at his studio on West 44th Street in Midtown, according to the lawsuit.

May 23, 2024 — Woman claims Combs raped her when she was a student at FIT in the 1990s

April Lampros, a former student at New York City’s Fashion Institute of Technology in the 1990s, filed a lawsuit against Combs who she says sexually assaulted her on four instances from the mid-1990s to the early-2000s .

It marked the eighth lawsuit against Combs since November, the seventh accusing him of sexual assault.

June 15, 2024 — Combs’ key to New York City revoked by Mayor Eric Adams

Mayor Eric Adams revoked Combs’ key to the city just three weeks after the shocking video of Combs beating Ventura circulated.

Combs was given the key in November 2023 to celebrate the release of his first studio album in 17 years.

Howard University also revoked Combs’ honorary degree and returned a $1 million donation around the time.
