The en suite rooms offer all one would expect of a hotel of this standard, and come with high speed Wi-Fi, tea and coffee making facilities, flat screen TV, toiletries and hairdryer and 24 hour service.

It is the wide rolling mass of the River Tyne, and not Hadrian’s Wall, that is a constant companion during this section of the walk, allowing you to cut through the centre of Newcastle with ease, and then escape the last industrial clutches of the city. You will eventually turn your back on the river and head up to Heddon-on-the-Wall, a peaceful village to spend the night with an intact 100-metre stretch of Hadrian’s Broad Wall.

Ascent:  175m /  Descent:  60m

PLEASE NOTE:  As there is limited accommodation in Heddon, we may have to book you into accommodation in nearby Newburn, which is 3 miles before Heddon. This means you will have 3 miles less to walk today, but 3 miles more the following day.

Breakfast in the morning is served in the conservatory with lovely views over the Tyne valley.

From Heddon, you join the Roman Road and begin to see ever more frequent signs of the wall itself. After a couple of miles, you pass the Vindolanda Roman Fort and then negotiate a few small climbs. Harlow hill is a small hamlet and two miles further on is East Wallhouses - home to Robin Hood’s Inn, a fantastic old pub, which you may like to try for dinner. The remainder of the walk follows parallel to the B6318 which was built directly on top of Hadrian’s Wall. You will see that a series of mounds and ditches provided an additional defence to the wall.

Ascent:  225m /  Descent:  310m

You will soon be entering the most spectacular sections of the wall, so keep your camera handy. Part company with the wall after Shield and enjoy a lovely journey through rugged countryside and a host of Roman ruins and forts. This section ends at Steel Rigg Peel Crags, a short walk from the hamlet of Once Brewed. Here, there is an information centre and nearby the Vindolanda Fort complex is one of the highlights of your trip.

Their guest rooms in the inn are fitted with a flat-screen TV. The private bathroom is equipped with a shower and free toiletries.

BridgeHouse

Bridge House has fabulous panoramic views of Milecastle 42, Cawfields and Hadrian’s Wall which encompasses its entire northern outlook. The house has two letting bedrooms; a double with an en-suite and a twin-bedded room also with en-suite. Both rooms have been newly refurbished to an excellent standard and have tea and coffee making facilities, hairdryers and televisions with Freeview and a DVD player.

Beginning in Once Brewed with a climb to Winshields Crags, this is the most strenuous part of the day, but you will be rewarded with excellent views and some of the best-preserved sections of Hadrian's Wall. From here the route continues across rolling terrain passing several historic sights. The route eventually comes to Gilsland where you can relax at a local cafe or bar enjoying a well-deserved drink before continuing on towards the turn-off at Haytongate, where you will come off the official Hadrian's Wall path and into Lanercost/Brampton for your overnight accommodation.

Ascent:  340m /  Descent:  470m

IMPORTANT: The distances and ascents/descents listed in this section are from Once Brewed to the Haytongate turn-off, where you come off the official Hadrian's Wall trail path. From the Haytongate turn-off, you are likely to be walking to the closest village which is Lanercost (adding approximately 0.6 miles / 1km) for your overnight accommodation or take a taxi to Brampton.

PLEASE NOTE : You may be overnighting in Brampton due to there being very few accommodations in Lanercost. From the Haytongate turn-off - if you decide to walk via our supplemented route to Brampton town centre - you will be adding approximately 3 miles (5km) and 100m's of ascent/descent to your walking day.  This 3-mile section into Brampton can also be skipped by booking a local taxi from Lanercost Priory  (number given in your tour documentation) .  Lanercost Priory has a tea room, so you can grab some refreshments while you wait.

The accommodation is also home to Peanut the dog, who welcomes you to the friendly shared lounge, though a separate quiet lounge is also available. Packed lunches are available at an extra cost, and evening meals are available subject to booking.

As the wall was predominantly dirt and turf in this section there is very little evidence on the wall remaining but this is still a lovely section of rural countryside and gives you time to reflect before entering the hustle and bustle of Carlisle. Carlisle is a large town and has all the facilities you may have been missing over the past couple of days. The magnificent Castle, cathedral and the Tullie House Museum are all well worth a visit if you have any spare time.

Ascent:  40m /  Descent:  120m

IMPORTANT: The distances and ascents/descents listed from this section are from the Haytongate turn-off, where you re-join the official Hadrian's Wall trail path to Carlisle. A further 0.6 miles / 1km walk at the very least is likely required as you walk from Lanercost to the Haytongate turn-off.

PLEASE NOTE : You may be overnighting in Brampton due to there being very few accommodations in Lanercost. From Brampton town centre - if you decide to walk via our supplemented route to the Haytongate turn-off - you will be adding approximately 3 miles (5km) and 100m's of ascent/descent to your walking day.  This 3-mile section to the Haytongate turn-off can also be skipped by booking a local taxi from your local accommodation in Brampton   to the Lanercost Priory  (number given in your tour documentation).

Other Information

If you want to take on the challenge of a long-distance trail, with fantastically scenic walks, steeped in history, and then arrive in your comfortable and welcoming B&Bs every afternoon, feeling a sense of achievement each day, then this tour is for you. This is our most popular itinerary on Hadrian's Wall.

Classic Routes | If you’re the active, outdoorsy type, who’s interested in taking on the great routes of the world or looking for a challenge, then our Classic Routes are for you. We’re talking the West Highland Way, Tour Du Mont Blanc and the Passau to Vienna Danube Cycle Path, to name but a few!

Inn to Inn Walking | Walk from place-to-place changing accommodations each night. Generally staying in B&Bs, inns, and guesthouses.

Solo Travellers, Families with Teens

The minimum age for this tour is: 12 Years

This tour is graded anywhere between easy to moderate and strenuous, depending on which itinerary you choose. It is most suited for those walkers with previous long distance experience. The route is a mixture of paths, tracks and minor roads. Some of the paths can become very muddy and boggy and negotiating this terrain can be slow-going at times. Please read the Hadrian's Wall Code of Respect in your guidebook, which gives guidelines as to how to care for the natural environment for this UNESCO World Heritage Site.

Overnight in B&B’s, small hotels and guesthouses, specifically chosen to ensure that you enjoy every minute of your stay. They all offer a warm welcome to walkers and traditional hospitality.

On our full Hadrian's Walking tours, the first day’s walk to Heddon (or beyond) is one of the longer walks so many of our walkers choose to arrive early in Newcastle, drop their bags at their accommodation in Newcastle and then enjoy the 5 mile (2.5 hour) walk to Tyne Bridge that afternoon, returning by metro to Wallsend and starting again from Tyne Bridge in the following morning. If you would like to do this please let us know when you book.

Please note that Bowness has limited accommodation and transport links so many walkers choose to finish the last days walk in Bowness and then catch the bus back to Carlisle that afternoon, ready for the journey home the next day. Just let us know at the time of booking if you would prefer this option.

Accommodation Location

We will always try and accommodate you at the locations detailed in the tour itinerary. Occasionally, because of limited availability, we may have to accommodate you into alternative accommodations which are not listed in the description. If those listed are unavailable the alternative accommodation will be of the same or better standard than those described.

IMPORTANT THING TO NOTE REGARDING OVERNIGHTING IN BRAMPTON - Due to very few accommodations in Lanercost/Haytongate, you will likely be staying in Brampton overnight instead. Brampton is approximately a 3-mile (5km) walk away from the Hadrian's wall trail path turn-off at Haytongate and 2.5 miles (4km) from Lanercost. You can either walk this section (adding the 3 miles / 5km to your walking day) using our supplemented walking route given in or alternatively, if your legs are feeling a bit tired or you'd rather not walk this extra section, you can instead call a local taxi company to take you to Brampton instead (number given in your tour documentation). Local cab companies generally do runs via Lanercost priory for around £10-15 depending on the time of day/year. The Priory is worth a visit in itself and also has a tearoom where you can get refreshments as you wait. The following morning, you will again have to decide if you wish to book a local taxi back to the Lanercost priory or walk via our supplemented route (again potentially adding 3 miles / 5km to your walk).

Solo Walkers & Single Rooms

This tour is available to solo walkers, although a supplement is payable. If you require single rooms within your party we would be happy to accommodate your request, although it is not generally possible to secure more than three single rooms in a party. A single supplement is also payable.

The Hadrian's Wall is well-waymarked and easy to follow. Navigation is straightforward as you can use the Macs Adventure App which has maps, GPS tracks and daily route information. Simply download the GPS tracks for offline use and follow the route on your cell with the assurance that navigation on this tour will be made simple. You will find more information on downloading the app in your Macs Adventure Account.

You can begin this long-distance walk anytime between March and October. Between these dates, the weather can be vastly different, from rain to wind to glorious days of sunshine. Please come prepared for walking in rain or shine.

Please note there are various events on throughout the year that may make availability difficult in the city of Newcastle (large concert events and the Great North Run). During these periods we recommend booking our "Best of" or Short Break Itineraries. Your adventure specialist will advise you of any difficulty in booking on particular dates.

By nature, the North of England is prone to varying types of weather throughout the year. Always be prepared for changeable conditions when hiking in England.  Waterproofs are essential.  We recommend visitin g https://www.metoffice.gov.uk/  (the UK’s official source for weather warnings) before setting off each day.  Do not  attempt to hike any sections if any serious weather warnings are in place.

Newcastle is a major transport hub in the northeast of England and has excellent rail, road and air links from both Scotland and the South of England. It also has an   airport   which serves many carriers. You can take flights to and from London, and there is also a direct flight (at the time of writing this) from New York City on United Airlines. There is also a train station. For more information on public transportation please visit the Traveline website.

Newcastle is on the main East Coast rail line. A direct train from London Kings Cross takes approx 3 hours, or from Edinburgh takes around 1h 30m.

From outside the UK, you can fly to Newcastle.

You can easily reach Newcastle by road too. It is a 2hr drive from Edinburgh via the East coast of Scotland or approx 3hrs from London. Car parking is quite limited but it is available at the main hotel we use in Newcastle which is from £12 per night. Parking there is on a first-come, first-served basis and unfortunately cannot be reserved.  It is possible to find some other off-street parking locations.

Bowness has limited accommodation and transport links so many walkers choose to finish the last day's walk in Bowness and then catch the bus back to Carlisle that afternoon for a second night in Carlisle, ready for the journey home from Carlisle the following morning. Just let us know at the time of booking if you   would   prefer this option.

The Stagecoach Bus Service 93 connects Bowness-on-Solway and Carlisle (the main transport hub for connecting travel). Please ensure you check the bus timetables in advance as it is a limited service that runs around three times a day - also,   no  buses run between Bowness-on-Solway and Carlisle on Sundays/bank holidays (so please keep this in mind when booking). Local taxi services are the only other option (we provide numbers in your information pack).

From Carlisle, there are excellent transport links to all major cities across both Scotland and the south of England.

Your bags will be transferred from your accommodation as per your itinerary and moved onto your next overnight accommodation.

At Macs Adventure, we work in partnership with many luggage transfer providers who set a limit on how many bags/suitcases they will transfer per person, and also the weight of the bag/suitcase.  Your booking includes transfer of 1 bag per person . It is very important that you read the luggage information specific to your tour before departure. If you do not adhere to these limits, there is a great possibility that you will be charged locally both for extra bags or if they are too heavy. This limitation can be a challenge, especially as airlines generally have limits that are higher. However, our luggage providers have reasons for these limits (usually due to the Health and Safety of their employees), which we must respect.

The distances listed are an approximation of daily walk lengths.

You may also notice that the total overall distance varies on our different itineraries - this is due to where you overnight along the way. Some examples of this - on our shortest (full) Hadrian's Wall Path itinerary (7 Day) you will remain on the Hadrian's Wall path for large sections meaning you will not detour off to overnight in places such as Once Brewed (which means you don't add in the extra mileages of coming off and back onto the Hadrian's Wall Path). Or on our longest (full) Hadrian's Wall Path itinerary (10-day), there is a 3-mile (out and back) detour to overnight in Corbridge that you would otherwise skip on our other itineraries.

Diversions on the Hadrian’s Wall Path

No matter what year you are due to walk Hadrian’s Wall Path you are likely to find some minor diversions in place along the way – this can be for a mixture of reasons, from forestry work, path resurfacing, damage after a storm or just general trail maintenance. Normally this will be a logical path that skirts around the effected section, and you should be back on the official trail path in no time at all. If there are any major diversions in place, the Macs Adventure team will reach out to you to let you know. Please always respect any diversion in place and ensure you follow them for your own safety.

Online Documents

At Macs Adventure we care about the environment! We’re taking action to minimize the impact we have by converting the majority of our tour documentation for online delivery.

On this tour, all your detailed tour information will be digitally delivered. You will have access to this documentation via “My Account” on our website.

Please be prepared by packing all necessary items, for example, proper rain gear (jacket and pants), sun hat, sunscreen etc. Your information pack has a detailed equipment list which includes standard hiking gear such as good hiking boots, warm and waterproof clothes for the cooler months and lightweight clothing for summer, and a daypack.

It is a requirement of booking this tour with Macs Adventure that you have suitable travel insurance which covers you for the activity and emergency evacuation and hospital care.

The honest truth is that there is no right or wrong way to walk the Hadrian's Wall, it's really a personal preference but it can often be a bit of a contentious subject to those who have walked it in the past! At Macs we tend to recommend walking it east to west (if you had to put us on the spot!) but we do offer the tour walking in both "west to east" and "east to west"   directions. The commonly known "benefits" of walking in a particular way are as follows:

East to West (Wallsend to Bowness-on-Solway)

  • The Romans built the wall from east to west, starting at the North Sea and going to the Irish Sea, so many walkers do it this way as it gives the sense of you are following the same path that the Roman soldiers did when they constructed it
  • There are some great museums - Great Hancock and Segedunum Fort - in Newcastle that give a wonderful context to the history and culture of the walk before you start (as opposed to finish).
  • Easier connections to Newcastle from Airports/train stations at the start (so if you have a long flight for example, you don't need to make your way to Bowness-on-Solway in the evening or potentially spend an extra night in Newcastle). it's also argued that it's nicer to walk out of a big industrial city into the fresh air of the countryside as opposed to finishing in it.

West to East  (Bowness-on-Solway to Wallsend)

  • The main reason for walking it west to east is that the prevailing winds in Northern England generally blow from the Atlantic (west to east), meaning you will have the wind at your back for most of the journey, which of course makes things a little easier.
  • The trail is deemed a little easier also as the terrain is more downhill if you walk it west to east.

Unfortunately we are unable to accommodate walkers with dogs as many of the accommodation providers do not accept pets.

You can use public transport, the Hadrians Wall bus or local taxis to continue to your next overnight stop.

You will need good walking shoes/boots (ideally waterproof), comfortable walking clothes, waterproof jacket and trousers, a day pack and hats/gloves etc.

The Hadrians Wall Walk is offered anytime between March and October. The weather can be variable whenever you decide to go since the wall is in northern England and the weather is often unpredictable!

We suggest you book as soon as know your plans as Hadrians Wall is extremely popular especially over April/May and July/August.

We offer a range of itineraries so you can choose your preferred daily distance and hopefully you will find an itinerary that suits your level of fitness. If you currently don’t enjoy an active lifestyle, we suggest regular walking in hilly terrain supplemented by cardiovascular exercise for at least six months before your walk.

Your bags will be transferred from your accommodation as per your itinerary and moved onto the next overnight location. Just leave them in the reception area of your accommodation, and they will be collected while you are out walking and delivered for your arrival. We ask you to limit your luggage to one bag of 20kgs per person.

Option One: Two Trains | Travel Time: 1hr approx.

The Green Line runs directly from Newcastle Airport into the Centre of Newcastle. You would get off at Monument station and transfer to the yellow line at the same station. You would then ride the Yellow Line for approximately 10 minutes until you reach the Wallsend station. From the station walk to the Segedunum Roman Fort and Museum, the official start of the Hadrian’s Wall Walk.

Option Two: Trian and Bus | Travel Time: 1hr approx.

Firstly, take the Green Line from Newcastle Airport towards the Centre of Newcastle alighting at Monument station. Walk to Monument Market Street and catch the Blue Arrow 11 Bus towards Whitley Bay. Alight at High Street East and walk to the Segedunum Roman Fort and Museum, the official start of the Hadrian’s Wall Walk.

There are variations on these journeys, for example, another bus (Cobalt Clipper 309) will also take you to the Wallsend area. However, these two are more direct routes.

If you want to take advantage of the AD122, the Hadrian’s Wall bus to see other sights, or perhaps have a non-walking day, please check out the information on the Hadrian’s Wall website. It is possible to download a timetable which you may then carry with you.

If you arrive in Newcastle early, you may like to walk the first 5 miles today, reducing your walking for the second day. Arrive at the Segedunum Roman Fort, where the walk officially begins. Perhaps spend some time in the museum before heading out along the trail. On reaching the Millennium Bridge, you will have walked almost 5 miles and can either chose to continue or take the nearby bus and train links to your hotel. The next morning you can start here and enjoy a shorter day.

Follow this couple as they hike alongside the famous UNESCO World Heritage Hadrian's Wall. Built by the Romans in AD 122.

The hiking days comprise of endless panoramic views over wild moors, wildflowers in pretty woodland and exploring the archaeology, and your evenings are spent in quaint English villages at cozy B&B’s before a pint at the local pub.

Your journey

The Romans came, they saw, but they couldn’t quite conquer.

After centuries of raiding, plundering, and fighting the ancient north of Britannia, they decided to build a wall.

But this isn’t just any wall, it’s an astounding achievement. It showcases the might of the ancient Roman Empire and illustrates how the Romans interacted with tribal Britain.

This tour takes you to the most interesting parts of this grand partition and lets you learn about Rome’s influence on Britain, while also giving you a chance to explore the gentle rolling hills of the borders and visit an ancient abbey. You also get the chance to explore the incredible Roman site of Vindolanda.

It’s perfect for anyone fascinated by the collision of cultures and quintessential British landscapes.

Tour Details

Students, seniors over 60, and children between 5 and 15 (unfortunately, we don't carry children under 5 years old)

  • Pack your waterproof clothing and walking shoes
  • Some attraction tickets can be purchased in advance when you book your tour. You’ll have the option to add at check-out. Other attractions will not be available to book beforehand, instead you can purchase those while on tour.
  • Transported on a 16 seat Mercedes mini-coach
  • Air conditioning as standard
  • The stories and services of an English-speaking driver-guide

You travel on old Roman Dere Street, which linked the supply ports of the south of England up to modern day Scotland.

Your first stop on this tour is the border town of Jedburgh, a historic burgh dominated by a magnificent 12th century Augustinian Abbey.

On arrival in Jedburgh, you may have time to take a short walk through the narrow streets and visit this impressive ruin.

Continuing south we make a stop at the scenic Carter Bar on the edge of the Cheviot Hills. This crossing point between Scotland and England runs close to the ancient Roman road and has formed the border between the two countries for the past 700 years.

The tour continues towards Hadrian’s Wall. We follow the road that takes us along the south side of the wall, stopping at Steel Rigg. You have time to walk beside the wall and experience the isolation that Roman foot soldiers would have experienced as they guarded their empire from the ‘barbarians’ to the north.

You continue your journey along the wall where your guide will recommend the best of the sites to visit.

Next up is an optional activity but one we think you'll love. Exploring the archaeoligical site of Vindolanda* allows you to step into the lives of those who lived at this Roman auxiliary fort. After years of excavation, many incredible things have been found, from shoes to jewelry, bones to pottery.

With history alive in your mind, you turn north and travel back to Edinburgh through the Galloway hills.

*The Vindolanda visit is optional.

Attractions

Tour Attractions

You are able to pre-purchase entrance tickets to the following attractions at the time of booking:

  • Vindolanda and Roman Army Museum

Other attractions may be booked and paid locally during the tour.

Do you offer hotel pickups in the departure cities?

The UK and Ireland's historic city centres are full of narrow streets and winding roads. So, to speed up your departure, we only pick up from our central meeting points. What's more is leaving the city using the most direct route also reduces the carbon footprint of our tours.

Is there parking close to the departure point?

We don't recommend bringing your car into the centre of our departure cities. It can be hard to find parking, and there are excellent public transportation services.

When should I get to the departure point?

Arrive 15 minutes before your departure time. Due to waiting restrictions, we can't wait for you if you're late.

What happens if I'm late or miss the tour?

If you're late for your tour, our cancellation policy applies. 100% charges are applicable, and you will not be entitled to a refund or alternative.

What are your cancellation policies?

For one-day tours: You'll receive a full refund if you cancel 24 hours or more before the tour departure

For tours of between two and nine days: You'll receive a 90% refund if you cancel 15 or more days before the tour departure

For tours of 10 or more days: You'll receive a 90% refund if you cancel 21 or more days before the tour departure

For all European packaged tours: You'll receive a 90% refund if you cancel 42 days before the tour departure.

If you cancel inside these notice periods, full charges will apply and no refunds will be issued.

To cancel your booking, email [email protected] as soon as possible. The effective date of cancellation will be the date we receive written confirmation from you.

Can Itineraries change?

Your tour will always follow the itinerary as closely as possible. Your driver-guide will keep you up to date on the road, and we'll try to get in touch about any large changes prior to your departure.

Can I pre-book a specific seat?

Due to logistical reasons, we're unable to let you pre-book a seat on the bus. But our comfortable 16-seat mini-coaches have huge windows. So, you'll always get a good view.

Are there toilets on the bus?

Unfortunately, we have no on-board toilet facilities, but you'll have regular comfort breaks.

How do you cater for people with accessibility needs?

We aim to accommodate everyone. To read more information on how we do this, click here to go to our accessibility guide.

Do you take children on your tours?

We regret we don't carry children under the age of five on our scheduled tours.

You can ask us about the tours we recommend for younger children. And if your child is less than 1.35m tall, you should let us know, so we can provide them with a suitable booster seat.

How much time do I get off the bus?

We want you to enjoy Britain and Ireland. And we believe the best way to do this is to get you off the mini-coach and out exploring. So, we give you plenty of time to take photos, go walking, and explore ancient ruins.

Why do you exclude visitor attractions?

We exclude visitor attractions in your tour price because it lets you travel your way. It means you can pamper yourself with a luxury lunch or skip an attraction whenever you feel like it.

Do we need to bring our own lunch?

You don't need to. We stop in small towns, villages, and rural eateries where you can choose whatever meal pleases both your taste buds and your budget.

Should I tip the driver-guide?

Let's be honest, our driver-guides would never refuse a cheeky bonus. But it's up to you, and the amount is entirely at your discretion.

What about travel insurance?

We advise you take out travel insurance.

What is ABTOT?

You're protected by ABTOT when you chose to let us reserve your accommodation on a multi-day tour. This means you can claim back anything you've paid us if we become bankrupt. Read our terms and conditions for more information.

Walk Hadrian's Wall Highlights

7 days | embark on a historic walk through the heart of the english countryside.

Group hiking Hadrian's wall in England

Spanning coast to coast across the north of England, Hadrian’s Wall is a spectacle of emperor Hadrian’s reign in the once-Roman province of Britannia. These days, the UNESCO World Heritage-listed Wall and nearby ruins provide the trail for a seven-day exploration of pre-British history on two feet. Walking from the western outpost of Carlisle to the eastern reaches of Port Gate near Newcastle upon Tyne, you’ll spend a week following one of the richest examples of Roman history in the United Kingdom. Stop in traditional English villages, discover the well-preserved sections of the Wall and explore the surrounding countryside on a walking trip full of history and rolling landscapes.

Trip overview

  • Gain an insight into a piece of the past often overlooked by English travellers as you walk along UNESCO World Heritage-listed Hadrian’s Wall with a local guide.
  • Take your time to discover important sites like the Vindolanda Roman Fort and the Fort at Chester, where you can learn the tales of the Wall.
  • Discover Birdoswald Roman Fort on an optional visit and learn the history of Hadrian's Wall's longest and best-preserved stretch while you look out over the River Irthing Gorge.
  • Walk with ease on a well-designed itinerary that prioritises your free time, especially in the cute village of Corbridge – walking every day doesn’t mean you have to be ruined like the remains!
  • Soak up the serenity of the English countryside – while the focus is on Hadrian’s Wall on this trip, your eyes and camera will be occupied every step of the way by the lush landscapes of northern England.
  • This walking trip is a point-to-point walking itinerary. So, while this trip doesn't require a high level of fitness, it’s essential to be at least moderately fit if you want to partake in all activities. Please ensure you bring sturdy walking shoes and comfortable clothes.
  • Your luggage will be transported, but you must bring a daypack to carry your essentials.
  • Some days of walking include steep ascents and descents and some uneven, often slippery terrain, so consider bringing walking poles as an aid at these times if you wish.
  • The diversity of the seasons in England makes for incredible scenery, but the weather in this region can be cold. It’s best to wear layers at all times of the year in case conditions change during the day. Please be equally prepared to walk in sunshine and rain.

View the itinerary for departures between 01 January 2024 - 31 December 2024

Welcome to the English countryside! Today, you’ll meet your leader and fellow travellers in front of the entrance to Carlisle train station at 10 am. Carlisle is a historic city dating back over 2000 years. With its renowned castle and the Tullie Museum, you might like to spend a night or two here before your trip to get a real feel for the place. After a quick welcome meeting, begin your walk out of town, following the River Eden on your way to the charming village of Crosby-on-Eden. Following the course of Hadrian’s Wall through sweeping fields and old bridleways, you'll soon arrive in Irthington. From here, take a short transfer to Haltwhistle – your base for the next three nights.

  • Bed & Breakfast (1 night)

There are no meals included on this day.

  • Carlise to Irthington guided walk

Check the ‘Joining Point Instructions’ of your Essential Trip Information for more details on when and where to meet your local leader and group this morning.

Your walking distance today will be approximately 15.5km/10mi.

It’s very important that you attend the welcome meeting this morning as we will be collecting insurance and emergency contact details at this time. After this meeting, you’ll start walking to your next destination. If you think you may be late, it is highly recommended to book one extra night prior to the start of the trip.

After a short transfer back to the trail this morning, you’ll begin your walk at Lanercost Priory – once England’s capital. Continue to Birdoswald Roman Fort, where there will be time for an optional visit to the historic structure that was inhabited for over 2000 years. This spot showcases many of the Wall’s defining features. Overlooking the River Irthing Gorge, this section of Hadrian’s Wall is the longest-spanning stretch and one of the most well-preserved. After spending some time with your group, walk to Gilsland, where you'll then return to your overnight accommodation in Haltwhistle.

  • Lanercost Priory to Gilsland guided walk
  • Lanercost Priory Church visit
  • Carlisle - Birdoswald Roman Fort - GBP12
  • Lanercost Priory - GBP8

Today’s walking distance will be approximately 11km/7mi.

After a short transfer this morning, you’ll start the day with a visit to the splendid Roman Army Museum – with imaginative displays and 3D films, this museum provides a wealth of insight into Roman military life. Walk along one of the most spectacular stretches of the wall as it follows the craggy Whin Sill ridge. This route will involve some steep ascents and descents to reach the highest point on the wall. Head downhill for a welcome refreshment at the historic Twice Brewed Inn, where you can sample beers from their on-site brewery. After, hop on the AD122 bus for the short ride back to Haltwhistle.

  • Carvoran to Twice Brewed guided walk
  • The Roman Army Museum visit

Today’s walking distance will be approximately 12km/7.5mi

Start the day with a short ride to Vindolana. Formerly a key military post on the northern frontier of Britain, this is the home of Britain's 'Top Treasure' – the Vindolanda Writing Tablets. This fort is also one of Europe's most important Roman archaeological sites and live excavations take place every year. Spend a few hours exploring the well-preserved fort and visit the onsite Museum – a treasure trove of antique items, including Roman shoes, boxing gloves and letters. You’ll then rejoin Hadrian’s Wall at Steel Rigg to start today’s hike. Begin with a steep climb on one of Northumberland’s most spectacular crags. Rest briefly from the challenging, hilly terrain at the well-preserved Housestead’s Roman Fort. This afternoon, you’ll finish your walk at Sewing Shields, where you’ll learn about the Arthurian legend. Tonight, take a short transfer to your accommodation in Hexham.

  • Steel Rigg to Sewing Shields guided walk
  • Bardon Mill - Housesteads Roman Fort - GBP12

After breakfast today, take a short ride to the outskirts of Chollerford. While you’re here, you can visit Chester’s Roman Fort and Museum to discover the history of the archaeologists responsible for the preservation of Hadrian’s Wall. If you opt for the visit, explore the remarkably intact bathhouse that sits beside the sparkling South Tyne River. Learn the history of the nearby Heavenfield Battle Site, where the church of St Oswald’s commemorates the famous victory of Oswald (the High King of Northumbria) in AD 634. Your walk today will take you through the countryside to Port Gate. When you arrive, enjoy some refreshments from the Errington Coffee House before transferring to nearby Hexham.

  • Chollerford - Heavenfield Battle Site and St. Oswald’s in Lee Church visit
  • Chollerford to Port Gate guided walk
  • Chesters Roman Fort and Museum - GBP12

Take a short transfer to the picturesque village of Corbridge, where you can explore the many ancient sites at your own pace. In your free time, you might like to wander around the shops or take an optional trip to Corbridge Roman Town and Museum – once the nerve centre of Roman operations in northern England and the Empire’s most northerly town. Walk back to Hexham through the lush Tynedale countryside this afternoon and maybe celebrate the last night of the trip with a final group dinner.

  • Corbridge to Hexham guided walk
  • Corbridge - Roman Town and Museum - GBP11

Today’s walking distance will be approximately 8km/5mi

With no activities planned today, your trip comes to an end and you’re free to leave at any time. The town of Hexham is only a short distance by rail or bus from Newcastle upon Tyne, where rail and air connections are available to take you throughout the United Kingdom and beyond. If you need help organising extra accommodation, get in touch with your booking agent ahead of time.

Newcastle City Tours

Hadrian’s wall tour, tour of hadrian’s wall.

Our Hadrian’s Wall tour leaves Newcastle and heads into Northumberland to begin your visit to the only Roman World Heritage Site in the UK, Hadrian’s Wall.

Nearly 2000 years ago in 122 AD, the Roman Emperor Hadrian embarked on a huge undertaking: to mark the northernmost boundary of Roman Britain with what has become known today as Hadrian’s Wall.

Parts of Hadrian’s Wall are still visible today; the line of it stretching from Wallsend in the east to Bowness-on-Solway in the west, and the fortifications continuing down the west coast to Ravenglass.

Vindolanda is a fascinating Roman fort and settlement lying just to the south of Hadrian’s Wall and it makes a perfect destination for our second stop.

Recent excavations have uncovered numerous buildings and some of the most unusual and well preserved artifacts from the Roman world. In the superb site museum, set in charming gardens, you will be able see Roman boots, shoes, armour, jewellery and coins.

Vindolanda Fort also boasts a full size replica of Hadrian’s Wall in both stone and timber, giving visitors a true idea of the impressive might of the monument.

Housesteads

Our third stop on the Hadrian’s Wall tour takes us to one of Rome’s most northerly outposts, Housesteads Roman Fort. Housesteads Roman Fort was built around AD 122 when the Roman Empire was at its height. It remains one of Britain’s most impressive ruins.

Housesteads Roman Fort was one of sixteen permanent bases along Hadrian’s Wall. It is one of the best-preserved and still manages to conjure an evocative picture of Roman military life.

If you would like to book one of our Hadrian’s Wall tours, or you would like a little more information about any of our alternative tours then please contact us, either by calling on 07780 958679 or by clicking here and leaving your details.

Would recommend as tour operator to anyone seeing the Wall and environs for the first time. Not only well-informed and efficient as tour operator but also personable, charming and able to tailor our tour and experience to the things we were really interested in. Highest recommendation.

Hadrian’s Wall Two Hour Guided Tour

2000 years ago Hadrian’s Wall was a hostile frontier, a place where two cultures collided.  Your guide dressed as a Roman soldier or Celtic warrior can weave a narrative from both the Roman and the native perspective, providing both points of view.

The Romans always intended to conquer Britain. Julius Caesar wrote about the riches of the British Isles… and also of giants and monsters. While Caesar made initial contact with the peoples of Britain, a full scale invasion would take another 90 years. Political turmoil in Rome was the catalyst for the new emperor, Claudius, to bring his forces to the shores of Britain, changing the country forever.
