Immerse yourself in the tropical and lush green nature of Costa Rica . The country is quite small but hosts more than 250 microclimates and largely consists of tropical rainforest, tropical dry forest and cloud forests. Its biodiversity is amazing! You will definitely be amazed by the wonders of Costa Rican nature and the diverse flora and fauna, not to forget the gorgeous beaches on both coasts. If that wasn’t enough yet, the Pura Vida lifestyle of the Costa Ricans will most definitely inspire you.

Are you ready to explore paradise?

Nicaragua has a tropical climate, but in the Northern highlands it is a lot cooler. It is not without reason that the country is well-known for its coffee production. But the many volcanoes, crater lakes and the well preserved colonial history of cities like Granada and Leon, also make Nicaragua an interesting destination. Not to mention the island of Ometepe and the beautiful beaches with perfect swell for surfers.

The country has not yet been discovered by the general public: all the more reason to discover this hidden gem!

item-thumbnail

Panama is of course known for the famous Panama Canal, which connects the Atlantic and Pacific oceans. The canal is definitely worth a visit. But did you know the country has much more to offer? Besides the capital, which is a nice blend of the old and new, the country offers two beautiful coasts with countless whitesand beaches and tropical islands! There is tropical rainforest, mountains and a very rich indigenous culture that you can experience personally.

Are you ready to discover the wonders of Panama?

We had a great trip and greatly enjoyed Costa Rica, the beautiful nature, the great accommodations and the nice people.

The service and info provided by Edventure Travel before and during our trip were excellent. Especially nice to be able to ask questions via Whatsapp, a big plus if you have not prepared that much.

Want to know more about our experiences in Costa Rica? We wrote a blog (in dutch).

Thanks Renee and Linda! We are still enjoying!

Your service and our journey was to our satisfaction! The detailed travel itinerary we received in advance, provided us with good answers to our questions. You are the Costa Rica travel specialist we were looking for!

We stayed in small lodges and not in massive hotels. Also, we have noticed that all tour guides radiate so much love for their country and nature and also like to talk about it. They were all young people who did their best, we enjoyed it!

Greetings from Cindy and family. Lots of success with your beautiful and personal travel company!

We want to thank you for the beautiful journey we have made, the beautiful places we have been and the nice people we have met.

Many thanks – also on behalf of our children who have also greatly enjoyed our travels – for the organization of this trip: we will not forget it!

We will certainly recommend you to anyone who is looking for a Costa Rica specialist.

We had a super nice holiday and really enjoyed everything. Luckily, we were able to see lots of wildlife and spotted many different frogs. Especially the red-eye frog was phenomenal.

Costa Rica is a relaxed and friendly country. Everyone helps you and is kind. We had to go to the hospital with our daughter, after a little accident at the pool. The guide who stood at the reception went with us because he knew where it was, but also because he knew no one would speak English. Super friendly!

Thank you for organizing and contributing ideas and we definitely recommend you as a true Costa Rica specialist!

We first doubted the added value of a travel agency (we could also arrange everything ourselves), but we are now convinced! It was nice that Edventure Travel took our preferences into account and created a perfect itinerary for us. As ‘locals’ and real Costa Rica expert they really do know all about the most beautiful destinations and hotels.

Also during the trip, it was great to be able to call you for assistance. Our Spanish is bad (this improved at the homestays) and communication was sometimes difficult. Especially Marlou helped us with the car damage. Very nice was also the concern when we had not arrived yet around 7 o’clock. It is nice to know that everything is okay.

We have kept a travel blog , perhaps nice for other travellers to read.

We had very high expectations from Costa Rica and we can say that Costa Rica has fully lived up to them! You have to be aware that you have to have some luck for some animals but in our case, we had all the luck of the world.

All animals spotted from a poisonous snake to the sloth. Only the felines we have not seen in the wild and maybe even better.

Edventure Travel has given us a dream trip that we will remember for the rest of our lives?! If we look at the other itineraries on your website, it looks like we should come back again because we have not seen everything yet!

What fantastic holidays we have had in Costa Rica and Panama. Edventure has brought us to the most special and beautiful places, they are for sure the Costa Rica travel specialist! The accommodations are characterized by fantastic owners and on special locations. Every time it is a party to arrive. We enjoyed the howler monkeys, toucans, quetzal, raccoons, turtles, iguanas, whales and all the other beautiful animals.

In addition to hiking, we have done horse riding, rafting and other active things. The nice thing about Edventure is that they are always available, so you decide to do something tomorrow, then they arrange that for you or give you where you can arrange it yourself! Their personal tips for the locations you go to make travelling even more special. (2018)

We enjoyed our holiday in Costa Rica in April / May 2018! Especially the small-scale stays, the personal receipts and the beautiful nature are the most important things to us.

We had nice contacts with Edventure Travel. First via the mail, discussing our itinerary, then more detailed and personal. We have also had contact via whatsapp before and during the trip, which was nice. We greatly appreciated the personal approach and a itinerary created according to our wishes. We definitely want to go back and see the other side of Costa Rica, and we will book it with the Costa Rica travel specialist!

Both our holidays to Costa Rica were an experience that touched our hearts! We loved it and fell in love with Costa Rica. Your service and support are excellent (!!) and we are happy to travel through your organization once again. If interested parties have questions about our experiences with you and the accommodations/environment, we would be happy to talk to them.

We have made a beautiful trip through Costa Rica with our children aged 3 and 6. What have we been allowed to stay in great places! We would have never found this ourselves. Costa Rica is very diverse and Edventure Travel is a true specialist and let us experience optimally. We slept in hotels, cabins and even in a safari tent. We were in the jungle, on the edge of the forest or on the beach. We have seen the mountains, beach and farmland.

With all the clear descriptions of Edventure Travel, we were able to find all locations well. During the trip, Marlou and Renée were also available for all our questions and we experienced this as very pleasant!

Serena, Sienna & Rick

We have had an unforgettable holiday in Costa Rica. With three of us, myself, my daughter and my brother, we have been travelling through Costa Rica for over 3 weeks. The destinations were beautiful and the diversity of the country was very nice.

Highlights of my daughter and me were the Farm stay in Finca Sura, the chocolate tour in the Tirimbina Reserve and the suspension bridges in Arenal. For my brother, whitewater rafting on the Rio Sarapiqui and the Extreme volcano hike in Arenal were absolute highlights. We surfed in Samara. Sienna, who was 2.5 years old, was very much taken into account everywhere. The population was also very friendly. The trip was super arranged and the hotels were great!

Tom & Liselotte

We had a very positive experience during our trip through Costa Rica. Thanks to Edventure Travel, everything was well organized! Very nice to have a kind of ‘back-up’ for when something does not work or is not clear because they live in the country and know what to do or where to go. This has been one of the reasons for us choosing Edventure Travel, they are the Costa Rica specialists we needed. In addition, of course for all local destinations/lodges.

Meet Edventure Travel

Following the path of life without planning too much. Just lettings things happen and going with the flow. This philosophy is what led Dutchman Ed Smit to found Edventure Travel in 2005 without any prior experience in tourism. He just allowed for his dream to come true.

Since then, Edventure Travel has developed into a travel specialist for exclusive trips to Costa Rica, Panama and Nicaragua. Personal contact is very important to us. We are in direct contact with both our travellers as our suppliers. There are no unnecessary intermediates involved. That does not only make our services cheaper, but a lot more practical and fun as well!

We live and work in Costa Rica. From here we select and visit all of our destinations ourselves. We try out all the tours and experiences and we know the special hotel owner, friendly coffee farmer or passionate guide who will make the difference in your trip.

Our specialty is organizing tailor-made tours through Central America. Our team of travel experts love to help you making your travel dreams come true. Would you like to know more about us?

What people say about us 🙂

I hardly know where to start in describing how helpful CRS was during our week long trip to Costa Rica. First, they helped put together exactly the itinerary that I ask for. I expected that. What I did not expect is that they rescheduled an activity for me when our plane was 2 1/2 hours late in arriving, and cancelled another activity when it became clear that we could not make it. They were literally available 24 hours a day for emergencies and the customer service was superb. Most impressive was the help they gave in dealing with the car rental agency when we had a minor accident on a very rainy muddy road. They were able to negotiate insurance coverage when I could get nowhere with the rental agency. I can confidently say that CRS tours will have your back every step of the way in your Costa Rican vacation. Each and every agent with which I dealt put forth every effort to make me happy. If I could, I would give them more than 5 stars. I highly recommend CRS tours.

Our Traveler Planer Jimena Rodriguez from CRS tour help us for 12 days tour to San José, Arenal/Fortuna, Flamingo, Monteverde, Quepos/Manuel Antonio. We did not have any problem. everything went well. I recommend this tour company to others.

We booked the Romantic Adventure Tour from CRS tours for our honeymoon, and it was a wonderful and unforgettable experience. CRS gave us some great options for excursions and lodging – we enjoyed every place we stayed. We also tacked on an extra day in San Jose and signed up for a food tour. All of the excursions and tours were on time, very professional, and great experiences! They even had a rental car company meet us at our white water rafting exit with our rental car. Another couple recommended CRS tours to us, and I’m so glad they did. The prices were also better than other companies that I received quotes from. I would certainly recommend CRS Tours to anyone looking to travel in Costa Rica for the first time.

One of the BEST well organized adventures I’ve been on. CRS developed a trip to our specifications, staying at Eco friendly lodges/hotels and provided an opportunity to see the many diverse landscapes of the country. We drove 1500 kms over 23 days, with no issues. The car was great, good on gas, Wifi was awesome in the car using the WAZE app, the routes where well planned out,so we got to see SO MUCH of the country, from the Pacific Coast – to the Caribbean, inland to the volcano’s and up to the cloud forest and more. Each check in was flawless and everything was beyond our expectations. .Costa Rica is an outdoor paradise, with Birds, unbelievable beaches, stunning landscapes, unforgettable sunsets and sunrises, and the people are friendly and kind. This was a trip that will be remembered all thankx to the professionalism of CRS. THANK YOU!!!

Matthew Costa Rica Experts

Originally from Columbus, Ohio, Matthew’s interest in travel began with a desire to educate himself and experience new cultures. Costa Rica specifically sparked his interest for its array of wildlife, warm tropical climate, and position as a leader in eco-tourism. He has high hopes that his next Costa Rica adventure will include a visit to the Rio Celeste River and Waterfall.

Before entering the world of travel, Matthew worked in Michelin star restaurants as a chef and captain. Outside of Costa Rica, he enjoys sailing in the British Virgin Islands. The next country on his travel list? Thailand. In Matthew’s spare time, you might find him collecting records, going to concerts, by the barbecue, or traveling. He’s also a level one sommelier and master of spirits. Cheers!

Andie Costa Rica Experts

Born and raised in San Pablo de Heredia, Costa Rica, Andie has always had a love for her country. “A conservation mindset was instilled in me from a young age. I was raised to have the utmost respect for the nature and wildlife around me,” she relays. Her favorite place in Costa Rica is a town in Heredia called San Isidro, about 20 minutes away from her parent’s house, hidden in the mountains bordering Braulio Carrillo National Park. She has always imagined living there if she ever moves back to Costa Rica. Her favorite Costa Rican dish? “Anything that has Cas in it! Cas is a small green fruit closely related to guava with a much tangier, sour flavor. This is a native fruit from Costa Rica that is incredibly hard to find anywhere else.” What’s next on her travel list? Japan. “One of my best friends is from the Shiga prefecture and she would like me to visit her soon!”

In her spare time, Andie collects tropical plants. Her current collection is upwards of 30. “I like to think of my apartment in Chicago as an extension of Costa Rica and really enjoy keeping it lush and green!” She also enjoys working on her music projects and going salsa dancing at local Latin clubs.

Ariana Costa Rica Experts

Ariana joined the Costa Rica Experts team in 2012 following a one-month homestay experience in San Jose. Since then, she has returned to Costa Rica yearly to revisit the country’s incredible nature and unique accommodations. Her favorite Costa Rica moments include sunrise yoga in the middle of the rainforest and standing up on a surfboard for the first time. Despite her affinity for sun and sand, Ariana is based in Chicago where she is active in comedy and music.

Matt Costa Rica Experts

Matt is our administrator extraordinaire. Somewhere between studying abroad in London and teaching in South Korea, Matt’s affinity for travel developed into professional expertise. He’s explored much of Europe and Asia, citing Tokyo and Hong Kong among his favorite destinations thanks to their excellent dining culture. Matt’s appreciation of food extends to Costa Rica; he always indulges in the country’s tropical fruit, high-quality coffee, and fresh ceviche. While he loves hiking Costa Rica’s most impressive landscapes – the massive Bajos del Toro Waterfall and Corcovado National Park, for example -  much of Matt’s free time is spent indoors avoiding the Midwestern weather.

Originally from Michigan, Lex has always had a deep fascination with the world and all of the varied peoples and cultures within it. “I didn’t leave North America until I was a teenager, but once I got my first passport stamp in Europe, I was hooked,” she shares. She went on to get her BA in International Studies and her MA in Cultural Anthropology. Naturally, one of the things she enjoys most about Costa Rica is the people. Her next stop in Costa Rica? She looks forward to exploring the Osa Peninsula as she finds the amount and diversity of wildlife fascinating.

Outside of Costa Rica, she has a soft spot for the UK. She also studied abroad in Turkey! “Istanbul was the most incredible city I’ve ever been to, and I still think of it often.” The Highlands in Scotland or Croatia are next on her travel radar. “I have distant family in both places that I’d love to visit,” she explains. Out of the office, you might find Lex crocheting, playing video games, or snuggling her cat Rootbeer. In the warmer months, camping and hiking get thrown into the mix. Fun fact: she also plays the drums!

Meet Costa Rica Expert Sarah Mayo

Sarah is no stranger to travel – a natural curiosity about the world inspired her to pursue a degree in tourism and french. She studied in France, China, and Dubai, and toured countless other countries before becoming an Expert. With an interest in ecotourism (she worked at one of the first LEED-certified hotels in the US!), it is no surprise that she fell in love with green Costa Rica. She loves all of the other wonderful features of the country, saying “In all of my studies and travels, I have never before been to such a friendly, welcoming country. It’s truly refreshing.” In fact, she was married in Costa Rica at Arenal Volcano in 2016.

Meet Costa Rica Expert Grethel

A Costa Rica native, Grethel has been an “Expert” her whole life! After entering the tourism industry many years ago, this proud Tica began lending her skills to Costa Rica Experts almost ten years ago. Her passion for her homeland stems from its natural beauty and the freedom that it inspires. “I am very proud of being Costa Rican because we are living in paradise,” she says. “We can breathe day by day the freedom of living in an exotic, peaceful, happy country.” Grethel is well-qualified to pass on her expertise, as she frequently explores the natural playground she calls home.  She enjoys running, mountain biking, dance, photography, and has an affinity for wine and Italian cuisine.

Elsa Costa Rica Experts

After finishing her major in tourism long ago, Elsa began working with local tour operators before settling in at Costa Rica Experts, where she has been a member of the family for 24 years. For Elsa, the country’s most impressive highlights are nature and wildlife, especially in the more remote areas. Her favorite destinations in the country are the more “wild” spots,  like Tortuguero and the Osa Peninsula. Though she was born in Nicaragua, Elsa has a deep and thorough knowledge of local sights and flavors. “My favorite typical dish is the “chifrijo” (pork meat, rice, beans, and pico de gallo – tomato salad)”. She is also passionate about all kinds of music and especially enjoys seeing her favorite singers live.

Deborah Meet The Experts

Originally from the Limon province on the Caribbean side of Costa Rica, Deborah has worked in the tourism industry for over 20 years. Her father sparked her early interest in travel. He worked on a cruise ship and would bring pictures of his travels home to share with her and her brothers – sparking a passion for discovering other customs, cultures, and gastronomies. Her favorite place in Costa Rica is her home province of Limon. She returns every year on August 31 for the Afro-Caribbean celebration. There’s a big parade that lasts approximately 6-7 hours. Participants from around the country come to Limon to dance through the streets in their most exotic and elegant costumes! When not visiting friends and family in Limon, she’ll opt for a hotel on basically any beach. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with family, going to restaurants, sporting events, church, and just being at home. “I just want to add that I love my country and I love working in tourism. It gives me the opportunity to learn about Costa Rica and invite people from other countries to know how beautiful it is and how Pura Vida we are,” she says.

Testimonials

Since taking the Greater Miami Specialist course I have a greater understanding of the Miami area which in turn has helped me sell more vacations. I can better accommodate  the kind of vacation my clients specifically request. This has helped my business so much. I am so glad I took the time to take the course. Thank you!   Kathryn Rezza Travel Curator, Virgin Voyages
I received a recommendation for the Oasis Hotel and Resort training on Travel Agent Academy from a fellow travel agent.  I took the training and shared the training with my team.  Taking the training afforded me the knowledge to share with my clients, building trust and increasing my sales. The smooth process was captivating and left me eager for more. Having insights into the properties we recommend to our clients is essential. I've sent several clients to Oasis, and they came back with enthusiastic reviews. As a travel agent, receiving outstanding referrals is rewarding, especially when clients genuinely appreciate the property. Rita Wiggs The Travel Pit
Over the years I’ve completed several Travel Agent Academy courses. Most recently, because of a personal trip, I completed the course for the state of Guanajuato, Mexico. I had been to Guanajuato City previously but felt I needed to learn more about the state to fully embrace the destination. The course gave me an in depth understanding of this fabulous area from the quaint Pueblos Magicos (Magic Towns) to the thriving wine region to the amazing archeological sites. This training has it all. Most people know Guanajuato as the home to the colonial town of San Miquel de Allende but there is so much more. This course will help you plan an unforgettable vacation for your clients and have them experiencing a Mexico that few see. Brenda Thomas, CTA Somewhere Now Travel

Our high-school spring break in Costa Rica was wonderful! Our travel agent did a wonderful job considering we only started planning one month before and was able to grab the last available rooms at some nice locations. The initial itinerary was great and she was able to make the adjustments we wanted. The final itinerary included all the contingency information we needed, but everything went according to plan.

We had a wonderful time in Costa Rica and spent our time in La Fortuna and Manuel Antonio. We were welcomed at the airport by a driver and tour guide, and transferred to La Paz, where we had a great tour of the gardens, waterfall, and wonderful wildlife (including sloths), then continued our drive to the resort near La Fortuna. The hotel was beautiful, with magnificent rooms, volcano views, and a spectacular, expansive buffet each morning with an omelet station, fresh fruits, and an extended selection of local, delicious foods, including a smoothie station. The hotel staff were friendly and provided great service. On the first night, we ate at a restaurant at the hotel which had a limited menu for our family. We had a wonderful guide on day two who brought us to the Arenal rainforest, with hanging bridges, an aerial tramway, and a zipline which was beyond a spectacular, adventurous experience that we will not forget. We enjoyed the hotel’s thermal pools and excellent dinner in La Fortuna (varied menu and open to substitutions). On day three, we had another day of adventure on the Balsa River for whitewater rafting. Our family of six had a spectacular guide who kept us exhilarated and safe! It was a blast and perhaps the best family activity! We enjoyed dinner at a restaurant in La Fortuna (good food, but pricey). We had another great guide for our hike in the Arenal Volcano National Park on our fourth day and dinner at a local place with a very limited atmosphere, but a spectacular meal brought out on grills to continue the cooking of steak, chicken, shrimp, and fresh fish, with delicious sauces on the side. It was plentiful, wonderfully displayed, and delicious. Day five was supposed to be a five-hour transfer to Manuel Antonio to include a crocodile encounter and lunch. Due to the Easter holiday week, it took 10 hours, but our driver was kind and patient, and we enjoyed our time together. We learned a good deal of Spanish on the way. We arrived where rainforest and beach meet at the hotel. The hotel was beautiful, but rustic, overlooking the water, and we had dinner. The staff were all great and helpful, getting our luggage handled at 5am and transportation as needed for restaurants. On day six, we enjoyed the morning at the adult pool. There were monkeys all around us in the canopies and trees. It was exciting to watch and take photos! We had lunch at the hotel and then the guide picked us up on time and took us for a fun adventure on Damas Island: an estuary and mangrove kayaking tour. We enjoyed the dinner provided with the kayak tour, then had a late-night BBQ at the hotel! Day seven was action-packed, with a transfer and spectacular, passionate tour guide for our outing to Manual Antonio National Park. We had lunch at the hotel and then another very exciting ATV adventure! We had a fabulous dinner at a café with a beautiful atmosphere. On our last day, we were transferred very early to the airport and said goodbye to an amazing, adventurous family vacation. We want to thank Zicasso’s travel agents for all their help in planning this vacation. They were patient, attentive, and accommodating of our relentless changes to the plans and restaurants. They were with us all the way from planning to arrival, and always available for any questions or guidance. All the plans were executed seamlessly and on time, with quality recommendations and team support. Thank you for all the great moments and memories!

Zicasso’s tour operator arranged an amazing trip to Costa Rica for our anniversary. He listened to our initial ideas, put together a fabulous itinerary, and helped us make a few mid-trip adjustments. We spent a full day in San José, then three days on the Osa Peninsula, and another four days in the Monteverde Cloud Forest. All the accommodations, activities, drivers, guides – everything was wonderful. We also felt like we got to know some interesting people and places in different parts of Costa Rica, despite not speaking Spanish. We couldn't have done it without our agent’s help. We absolutely recommend him!

Zicasso's travel agency put together an exceptional itinerary for us. The accommodations were great; some extraordinary. All of the guides were excellent and very well-informed. It was remarkable how they could spot wildlife that was virtually hidden to the untrained eye. We saw monkeys (white-face, howler, and squirrel), sloths, macaws, iguanas, snakes, owls, and much more wildlife. It truly was the trip of a lifetime and our agent was easy and efficient to deal with.

After speaking with two local tour companies, my husband and I chose ours to book our first trip to Costa Rica. They were fantastic to work with from the very beginning! Our Zicasso agent answered all of our questions, asked what our priorities were, and booked a great itinerary for us. We only had a week, so she suggested we visit three locations and planned all of the lodging, activities, and travel to make sure we saw as much as possible in a short time. Her communication was always quick and super-clear, and she worked with us to ensure we were happy with the final itinerary. Another agent took over from there and was our contact up to and during our time in CR. The trip itself was fantastic!!! Our main goal was to immerse ourselves in nature and wildlife. We were not disappointed! The local tour companies booked for us were all professional. Every early-morning pick-up was on time! The drivers and guides were friendly and so knowledgeable. The fresh fruit on each tour was a nice touch and some of the best we have ever had! knew we could reach out to our travel company anytime during our vacation if we needed to, but everything went so smoothly that it wasn't necessary until the last day. On our day back in San José, our plans changed and our agent helped us to get a reservation at a wonderful restaurant near our hotel for our last night of vacation. We had been wanting to visit Costa Rica for years and this trip was a great first look. We highly recommend our travel company and when we plan our next trip to CR, we will definitely work with them to explore more of this beautiful country!

I cannot begin to tell you how wonderful the trip was and how grateful we are to Zicasso's travel partner. If there were 10 stars as the rating, I would give everyone a "10+". From the very beginning of the process, they listened to what I was hoping to accomplish with our vacation. They thoughtfully planned the itinerary for us and the most perfect vacation we have ever had. Two weeks in Costa Rica – the perfect blend of exploration, relaxation time, hiking, and spending time with those in the local communities – was exactly what we were hoping for. Every driver/tour guide was absolutely wonderful; it actually made me sad to leave. We felt like we made friends forever. Since our return, I have recommended Zicasso and their partner to 10 people and will continue to sing their praises for a long time. Thank you for giving us such a wonderful experience.

Our 10-day adventure to Costa Rica in April was amazing. We spent time in La Fortuna, Monteverde, and Manuel Antonio. Each area offered so much to do and see, and we took advantage of every minute. We did a number of tours: hanging bridges in Arenal, a sloth hike, canyoning/rafting, a night walk with Costa Rican dinner, a coffee and chocolate tour, hike in the cloud forest, zipline, catamaran sailing, and a private guided tour in Manuel Antonio National Park. We had private drivers taking us from each location. Zicasso’s travel company was very attentive to all our requests and put together a great itinerary. Having them to correspond with through WhatsApp during our trip was wonderful. I would highly recommend them for your trip planning. Thank you to the staff who were always there when needed. They are a five-star travel agency.

Travel agent Mauricio in Costa Rica

 Based on  4  reviews

Mauricio was absolutely wonderful! He spoke on the phone with us multiple times in planning our trip to make sure we were getting exactly the experience we were looking for asking about the level of adventure we were seeking, our favorite activities, and had suggestions that we hadn't even considered. It made us feel so excited that he was as invested in our experience being fun and unique as we were! Once we arrived in Costa Rica, we felt immediately welcomed with little stuffed sloth friends greeting us in our airport transfer. Everything wildly exceeded our expectations! Our accommodations were AMAZING and wildly exceeded our expectations. All of our guides were so personable and fun, and Mauricio somehow managed to always have us be with a small group or have private excursions. The cherry on top was how communicative he was during our trip to make sure that we were having an excellent time!

Costa Rica Tours & Vacations

Travellers walking with tour guide in the jungle near Fortuna Waterfall in Costa Rica

Biodiverse, brilliantly colourful and naturally breathtaking, Costa Rica embraces a slower pace of life.

An adventure hotspot for some, a cultural haven for others and a tropical paradise for most, Costa Rica definitely lives up to its translation as the ‘rich coast.’ And as you journey under lush jungle canopies and through laidback surf towns, you’ll soon be rich with  memorable experiences.  Lean into the slower pace of life as you become a pro at spotting toucans in Monteverde’s  steamy cloud forests  or listening out for the distant whoop of white-faced capuchins in Manuel Antonio. The phrase ‘hustle and bustle’ isn’t in Costa Rica’s vocabulary, as you’d expect from a country whose unofficial motto is ‘ pura vida ’ – the pure life.

Culture and customs.

Costa Rican culture can be summed up in two words: 'pura vida', or the pure life. It's as a greeting, farewell and a way to show appreciation. Like any good life motto, pura vida is better experienced than explained. It means being friendly and polite, taking it easy and being thankful for what you have. Costa Ricans' carefree way of life, coupled with living in one of Central America's most progressive and prosperous nations, makes the locals some of the happiest in the world.

You'll find that people in Costa Rica are generally in less of a hurry than most North Americans or Europeans. Following what is affectionately known as 'Tico time', people will often be fashionably late, except for things with schedules – Tico time does not apply at work, the movies or the train station.

Costa Ricans (or Ticos and Ticas) are known for their conflict-averse nature. Peace is so highly valued here that their army was abolished in 1949, with all funds reallocated to create an 'army' of teachers instead.

History and government

Ancient history.

Like most Central American countries, indigenous communities thrived for thousands of years as hunter-gatherers, and it's believed that humans have lived in Costa Rica's jungles and rainforests for as many as 10,000 years. However, with no urbanised civilisation like the Aztecs or Mayas, and little to no cultural preservation during the time of Spanish colonisation, not much is known about Costa Rica's true indigenous populations.

Colonization, independence and trade

At the time of Spanish colonisation, it's estimated that 400,000 people lived in what is now known as Costa Rica. Christopher Columbus arrived in the region in 1502 on his fourth voyage, leading to the settlement of the first Spanish colony in Costa Rica.

As settlements grew, indigenous populations dwindled due to disease and forced labour. After around a century, the population had fallen to 20,000, and a century later, down to 8000.

In 1821 the Americas broke free of Spanish control, following the Mexican War of Independence. Costa Rica became part of the Federal Republic of Central America in 1823, before gaining complete independence in 1838

Costa Rica eventually found its feet in the global coffee trade, and by the end of the century, coffee crops accounted for nearly 90% of Costa Rica's exports and 80% of its foreign income. Not only was coffee production an indicator of wealth in Costa Rica, it was also a powerful political tool prompting the emergence of other industries, including the banana trade, which surpassed coffee exports in the early 20th century.

Costa Rica's economy relies on eco-tourism, and the country has championed the idea that the 'rich coast' refers not to resources dug from the ground but to the natural wonders above ground. The easygoing attitude of Ticos comes from a love of their country and pride that their democracy has endured in a conflict-ridden region.

Eating and drinking

Costa Rican cuisine is wholesome and fresh, with influence from  Spanish ,  South American , and  Caribbean  culinary traditions. On the Caribbean coast, you'll find dishes with Afro-Caribbean flair, usually featuring more meats, spices and coconut milk.

Capital city, San Jose, not only has an up-and-coming food scene but has established itself as the craft beer hub of Costa Rica. Enjoy seasonal samplings on a San Jose Bites and Sites tour with Urban Adventures

What to eat in Costa Rica

  • Gallo pinto Gallo pinto, the most common side dish in Costa Rica and across the Americas is served alongside meals morning, noon and night. It’s made of rice, beans, onions, peppers and spices, and the name translates to ‘speckled rooster’ because of the pops of colour in the rice.
  • Casado If you eat at a ‘soda’ or a traditional Costa Rican restaurant, when travelling, chances are a casado will be on the menu. Although there are multiple variations of this tasting plate, you’ll likely get served up some gallo pinto, fried plantains and salad with either chicken, beef or fish, and freshly squeezed juice, covering all your food groups in one.
  • Chifrijo Chifrijo is a common bar snack in Costa Rica. The word is a combination of its two main ingredients – chicharrones (fried pork rinds) and frijoles (beans). The chicharrones and beans are layered together and topped with guacamole and pico de gallo and served with fresh tortilla or plantain chips for dipping.
  • Ceviche While ceviche is probably more often associated with Peru, the Tico version is a delicious variation. Made with raw fish cured in citrus juice, onions, coriander and peppers and served with tortilla chips or fried plantains, this dish is light, refreshing and a great start to a meal.
  • Patacones Patacones are deep-fried green plantains that are ideal for a snack or as a dipping device for chifrijo, guacamole or pico de gallo.
  • Sopa negra Sopa negra is a Costa Rican black bean soup, often flavoured with tomatoes and spices and served with egg and coriander.
  • Rondon Rondon is a seafood chowder that comes from Jamaica. Other Caribbean countries who’ve adopted the recipe have put their own spin on it with their choice of seafood – fish, crab, small lobster – as well as the coconut milk broth and spices.
  • Arroz con leche Sweet tooths can rejoice with this Central and South American dessert staple of arroz con leche – a spiced, sweet rice pudding made with cinnamon, cloves and raisins. Try it as a warming snack or a special dessert.
  • Pejibayes This unusual fruit comes from a type of palm known as the peach palm – the same tree that heart of palm comes from. After boiling for a few hours and discarding the inner seed and outer skin, the fruit is finished with a squeeze of lime or a dollop of mayonnaise to eat the local way. The taste has been likened to a mix between a squash, potato and cashew.

What to drink in Costa Rica

  • Coffee Costa Rica produces some of the best coffee in the world, so you’re set for your caffeine fix during your time in Costa Rica. It has both the ideal soil composition and the perfect elevation to grow the perfect coffee crop, so be sure to sample as many fresh local brews as you can.
  • Alcohol If you’re looking for drinks of the alcoholic variety, try guaro – a liquor made from sugar cane, best enjoyed in a guaro sour (with lime, simple syrup and soda). The craft beer scene is growing quickly here as well, so look for microbrews from a multitude of small local breweries. And if you’re wondering how to say cheers, just say ‘pura vida’ again!
  • Naturales Naturales – sometimes also called refrescos or batidos – are delicious fresh fruit juices blended with either milk or water. You can find them all over the country at small kiosks or booths in a variety of flavours like mango, pineapple and guanabana.

Geography and environment

Costa Rica is known for its incredible beaches and magical rainforests. But the backbone of this coastal nation is truly stunning mountain ranges, many of which contain both active and dormant volcanoes. You’ll also find heaps of waterfalls, lakes and rivers throughout the country. For this reason, adventure sports such as zip-lining, whitewater rafting and cycling are popular in inland destinations such as La Fortuna and Montverde, and adventure-packed activities are a popular way to experience the country.

Costa Rica’s diverse topography is home to many microclimates, and the temperature and weather can vary dramatically depending on elevation and how close you are to the coast. Rainforests, cloud forests, jungles and mountains exist side by side. The varied land and climate foster over 5% of the world’s total biodiversity.

Costa Rica is home to over 500,000 species of plants and animals. Those seeking to  spot local wildlife  will be enthralled by Costa Rica’s unique flora and fauna. And the spectacular variety of wildlife isn’t limited to the land – scuba diving is another popular activity, with Costa Rica boasting some of the most beautiful bays, beaches and reefs in the world.

Four of the most beautiful beaches in Costa Rica

Tortuguero National Park One of Costa Rica’s best-kept secrets, this national park is the unspoilt paradise you’ve been searching for. Take a dip in Tortuguero’s warm turquoise waters, or just relax on the idyllic shores.

Manuel Antonio A true eco-playground, you can spend a day exploring misty rainforests and searching for sloths and monkeys before cooling off on one of the delightful beaches. Head into Quepos town for some good food and fiery nightlife after the sun sets.

Jaco Once a sleepy beach town, Jaco’s proximity to San Jose has made it a one-stop shop for those seeking big waves and even bigger parties. The gateway to national parks and  active adventures , there’s no denying Jaco’s uber-cool surf-town vibe.

Corcovado Well off the tourist trail, Corcovado isn’t your average beach experience. Boasting diversity of colour, landscape and wildlife, Corcovado is perfect for those seeking beaches with character and charm. Oh, and it’s got the largest primary forest in the American Pacific, if you needed another reason to visit.

Whether you’re buying souvenirs or groceries, your best bet in Costa Rica is to shop at local markets. Although there are large, American-style grocery stores, they can be a little pricey. The best deals on fresh produce can be found at a feria, or farmers market. Most towns have a weekly feria where you can buy tropical fruits and vegetables. And if you happen to miss the weekly market, you’ll often see street vendors selling select items like avocados and mangoes every day.

Head to the Mercado Calle Nacional de Artesania y Pintura (National Craft Market) in San Jose for the best selection of handmade goods and souvenirs. Here you can stroll through dozens of stalls selling handmade hammocks and painted oxcarts as well as t-shirts and shot glasses that say ‘pura vida’. Also in San Jose, the Mercado Central is a great place to grocery shop and pick up souvenirs. Vendors offer everything from fresh produce to coffee to leather goods.

You’ll often see carved wooden masks for sale but, while all of them are beautiful, for a truly authentic mask you can buy directly from indigenous communities who make them.

As in any destination, check that any souvenirs made from natural materials have been ethically sourced. Avoid buying products made from rainforest woods that were not sustainably harvested, sea turtle shells and other animal products. Before heading home, check with your local customs officials to ensure that you are able to bring certain items back into your home country. Australia and New Zealand, for example, have strict quarantine laws regarding some materials, such as food and wooden objects.

Festivals and events

Costa Ricans definitely know how to throw a party, and place a lot of importance on food, family and community. Many Costa Rican festivals celebrate the country’s farming and ranch heritage, and a lot have a Catholic element. No matter which festival you’re celebrating, you’re pretty much guaranteed a deep dive into Tico culture. Here are a few of the biggest festivals in Costa Rica:

Las Fiestas de Zapote

This festival, celebrated from Christmas until New Year’s Eve every year in the town of Zapote, is a week-long fiesta. It’s home to the biggest rodeo in Costa Rica, many carnival games, as well as rides and food stalls.

Palmares Fiestas

After the festivities of Christmas, New Year’s and the Zapote festival have wound down, it’s time for the Palmares festival. In mid-January, more than one million Ticos and tourists head to the town of Palmares for one of the largest festivals in Costa Rica. Revellers drink beer, enjoy food, listen to international acts and watch traditional bullfighting and the ‘tope’ – a horse parade through the streets.

Fiesta de los Diablitos

The ‘Festival of the Little Devils’ is celebrated twice each year (in December and February) in the indigenous communities of Boruca and Rey Curre. The festival celebrates the triumph of the original inhabitants over the Spanish conquistadors, with dancing and performances featuring costumes and painted masks.

Limon Carnival

If you’re travelling to Costa Rica in October, you’ll probably find yourself in the festive spirit as you touch down, as this is the month of Carnival. Notably, it’s when the Caribbean town of Puerto Limon celebrates this annual festival, with elaborate costumes, floats, parades and food stalls aplenty, spread across two weekends.

Public holidays that may impact travel include:

Juan Santamaria Day

Guanacaste Day

Our Lady of Los Angeles Feast Day

Independence Day

Natural Cultures Day

Please note:  Costa Rica's public holidays may vary.

From 1 January 2023, Intrepid will no longer require travellers to provide proof of vaccination against COVID-19 (excluding all Polar trips and select adventure cruises).

When is the best time to visit Costa Rica?

Year-round tropical warmth means there really isn’t a bad time to visit Costa Rica. December to April are normally the driest months; however, Costa Rica’s diverse topography and blanket of rainforests suggest that you should be prepared for at least some rain any time of the year – a very small price to pay for such lush surroundings.

The good news is that even during the rainiest of seasons, the rainfall tends to be limited to a couple of hours a day – just enough time for you to enjoy a cup of Costa Rica's acclaimed coffee in one of its many cafes.

The most popular time to visit Costa Rica is between December and March – the driest and hottest months along the Pacific Coast. May to October brings the most rainfall across the country, but this is dependent on the region, as the wetter seasons are extended on the Osa Peninsula and northern sections of the Caribbean Coast.

Do you need a visa to travel to Costa Rica?

Generally, Costa Rica grants visas to most countries’ passport holders for a period of 90 days, providing travellers have a valid passport, a return or onward ticket and their trip is for leisure. Some countries’ citizens must apply for a visa before leaving their home country, but most do not.

Visas are the responsibility of the individual traveller. Entry requirements can change at any time, so it's important that you check for the latest information. Please visit the relevant consular website of the country or countries you’re visiting for detailed and up-to-date visa information specific to your nationality. Check the Essential Trip Information section of your tour itinerary for more information. This is for general information only and may be subject to change. It is your responsibility to obtain relevant visa and travel information required for entry, departure and travel to each country or region you visit on your trip. You should confirm these with the relevant embassies and/or consulates.

Is tipping customary in Costa Rica?

While tipping isn't mandatory in Costa Rica, rounding up the bill and leaving spare change at restaurants and cafes is standard practice. Many restaurants do add a service charge to the final bill which is usually a 10% gratuity; however, 500 colones (or around USD 1) of local currency is an appropriate extra amount.

What is the internet access like in Costa Rica?

Costa Rica's cities and tourist centres have wi-fi and internet access available in hotel lobbies and internet cafes. Internet access is less available in rural and remote areas.

Can I use my mobile while in Costa Rica?

Mobile phone coverage is generally good in Costa Rica's cities and metropolitan areas, although expect limited coverage in remote or mountainous areas. Ensure you have global roaming activated with your carrier if you wish to use your phone while in Costa Rica, but, be sure to check with your service provider first to find out about any fees you may incur, as sometimes this can be expensive.

Costa Rica has one state-owned phone provider – Kolbi – as well as a selection of private companies, should you wish to purchase a SIM while abroad. Depending on what connection and coverage you need during your stay in Costa Rica, a prepaid option with one of these providers may be the cheapest way to go.

What are the toilets like in Costa Rica?

Costa Rica's toilets are a mixture of flushable and squat toilets, so be prepared to encounter both. Carry your own supply of toilet paper and soap or hand sanitizer, as these aren't always provided.

Can I drink the water in Costa Rica?

Although tap water is considered safe to drink in Costa Rica's cities, it's probably a good idea to avoid drinking tap water in Costa Rica. For environmental reasons, try to avoid buying small bottles of water. Ask your leader where filtered water can be found as some hotels provide this, so you’re able to use a reusable bottle. It's also advisable to avoid ice in drinks and to peel fruit and vegetables rather than eating washed or unwashed produce.

Are credit cards widely accepted in Costa Rica?

Major credit cards are accepted by most large shops, hotels and restaurants, although smaller vendors and market stalls often only accept cash, so be sure to have a combination of both when travelling.

What is ATM access like in Costa Rica?

ATMs are easily found in large cities and airports, although are less common in rural and remote areas. When travelling out of the city, come prepared by having enough cash, as ATMs aren't always an option.

Is Costa Rica safe for LGBTQIA+ travellers?

Generally speaking, Costa Rica is a safe destination for LGBTQIA+ travellers. Same-sex relationships are legal and, in 2015 Costa Rica became the first country in Central America to recognize gay relationships; however, recognition of same-sex marriage is currently pending government approval. In many places in Costa Rica, public displays of affection might attract unwanted attention, but there are a few places in Costa Rica with a thriving LBGTQI scene. Quepos has long been known as the LGBTQIA+ capital of Costa Rica, and the actual capital, San Jose, has a good number of gay bars and clubs.

For more detailed and up-to-date advice, we recommend visiting   Equaldex  or   ILGA   before you travel.

If you are travelling solo on an Intrepid group tour, you will share accommodation with a passenger of the same gender as per your passport information. If you don’t identify with the gender assigned on your passport, please let us know at time of booking and we’ll arrange the rooming configuration accordingly. A single supplement is available on some tours for travellers who do not wish to share a room.

What is the weather like in Costa Rica?

Being in the deep centre of Central America, Costa Rica gets hot and oh so humid. However, there’s a whole number of microclimates inside its borders – that’s a fancy way of saying that the terrain is pretty hilly – so depending where you are in the country, the temperature may fluctuate. Generally speaking, Costa Rica enjoys a tropical climate year-round with temperatures averaging at 18°C minimum and 27°C maximum.

Costa Rica’s Pacific Coast has tropical heat almost all year round. March is the driest and hottest month, and May to October brings the wet season to the region. The Western Central Valley, including cities like San Jose, indirectly follow the Pacific Coast’s weather trends.

The Caribbean Coast has pretty steady rainfall all year round with no distinct dry season. September to October and February to March are considered the best months to travel to this side of the country as they are drier than most, but still experience rainfall. The Eastern Central Valley usually follows a similar weather pattern.

Is Costa Rica accessible for travellers with disabilities?

Intrepid is committed to making travel widely accessible, regardless of ability or disability. That’s why we do our best to help as many people see the world as possible, regardless of any physical or mental limitations they might have. We’re always happy to talk to travellers with disabilities and see if we can help guide them toward the most suitable itinerary for their needs and, where possible, make reasonable adjustments to our itineraries.

Much of Costa Rica’s travel highlights are based around the coast and in nature, so depending on travellers’ level of mobility, this may present obstacles. Many national parks are difficult to visit for travellers using a wheelchair, as jungle paths are mostly remote and not stable. Manuel Antonio does have wider paths and more accessible routes to venture into the rainforest, and the wide boardwalks and beaches are wheelchair friendly. The capital, San Jose, is a bit tricky to get around, with rough sidewalks and a lack of ramps. There are, however, taxi companies in the capital that offer wheelchair-accessible vans.

If you do live with a visual, hearing or other impairment, let your booking agent or group leader know early on so they’re aware and suitable arrangements can be made. As a general rule, knowing some common words in the local language, carrying a written itinerary with you and taking to the streets in a group, rather than solo, can help make your travel experience the best it can be.

What to pack for a trip to Costa Rica

Packing for a trip to Costa Rica doesn't have to be difficult as long as you take into account the weather conditions you're likely to experience while you're over there. This means packing lightweight, comfortable clothing, walking shoes for exploring, appropriate sun protection items like sunscreen and hats, and a backpack so you can carry your camera and a reusable drink bottle.

What language is spoken in Costa Rica?

Spanish is the official language of Costa Rica, however, there are five indigenous languages that are still spoken throughout the country, as well as a mixture of English, Portuguese, German, and French spoken by a percentage of the population.
