The throwback appeal of teardrop campers is alive and well. Building one yourself is a hardy salute to the trailer’s earliest days — and your badassery.

The first teardrop trailers popped up in the 1930s and flourished in the time after World War II, when optimistic Americans were ready for easy, open-road vacations.

Improved highway systems in the 1940s and beyond made it easier for travelers to reach new places — what Jack Kerouac called the “great raw bulge and bulk of my American continent.”

On Berger’s site, you’ll find a trailer Hall of Fame for ideas on how to use his plans to create your dream teardrop model. He also offers additional info on the process, like how to create a prototype before you tackle the real thing.

2. Wyoming Woody Plans

Ryan, the founder of Teardrop Builder, spent more than 2 years planning, designing and constructing his original Wyoming Woody teardrop. His next move? Release the plans for free on his website as a thank you to the “wonderful teardrop community who offered advice or techniques” during his build.

The Wyoming Woody’s classic 1950s shape and build is iconic, and though it’s DIY, it certainly doesn’t look the part. Many of the campers featured on Ryan’s site look as polished and put-together as custom pre-built teardrops that cost thousands of dollars more.

3. CLC Teardrop Camper Kit

Virginia-based Chesapeake Light Craft has made high-end small boat kits since the early 1990s , and their foray into the teardrop market is a bold departure from the typical canned-ham style of many small trailers.

CLC offers a number of configurations and options to keep your costs in check, and extra features like a roof rack or rooftop vents make your teardrop as comfortable and versatile as you need.

Few teardrop kits get as much press coverage as this bad boy (Outside Magazine, GearJunkie, Tiny House Talk, the list goes on). One look at the sleek silhouette and you’ll see why.

4. Purdy Adventure Teardrop Kit

Purdy’s already-built teardrops clock in under $10,000, but to save even more money, they offer turnkey kits with everything you need to build one yourself. The kit includes a rolling chassis and all the exterior and interior materials for trailers sized 4′ x 8′ to 5′ x 10′.

Their Adventure Teardrop is a classically designed canned ham-style camper with plenty of room to relax, organize camp supplies and enjoy extended trips on the road. Lighting and window upgrades can add to the ambiance, but the trailer’s basic features will be more than enough for the self-sufficient camper.

5. Kuffel Creek Teardrop Plans

Kuffel Creek is all about two things: apples and teardrop trailers. This apple nursery out of Riverside offers teardrop plans for three models: their Benroy, Cubby and Comet. The Benroy’s a unique boxy number with a fun history, and the other two offer varying degrees of space and comfort.

After selling thousands of plans worldwide for years, Kuffel Creek considers themselves the “gold standard” for teardrop camper plans and their brag photos are an unquestionable testimony to the work they’ve inspired.

The estimated cost to build their models is between $2,000 and $3,000 depending on the camper, though there’s plenty of improvisation you can do to customize a teardrop to your liking and budget.

6. Big Woody Teardrop Campers

At Big Woody you’ll find fully built campers, teardrop kits and plans to make your own. Their plans are affordable and the kits are a steal: the ultimate teardrop kit costs right around $900, compared to the $9,000 – $13,000 base prices of their built campers.

The kits are broken up into different packages, making it easy to choose exactly what you need. They also offer plenty of accessories, parts and equipment to make life on the road a breeze.

7. The Teardroppers Kits & Plans

The Teardroppers offers kits and plans for every type of DIYer, from the camper who wants to start from scratch (check out the $29 video guide ) to those looking for pre-cut materials.

They estimate the cost of a built trailer to be $1,800 to $2,100, including the kit, chassis, various parts and adjustments you make to your teardrop. These are basic but practical trailers that offer lightweight space and comfort on a budget.

8. The Teardrop Trailer Free Guide

It’s hard to find on their site, but this Canada-based company offers a free detailed guide to building a teardrop from the chassis up. They go over all the basics, from choosing a trailer and base to framing the trailer and wiring the electronics.

It may not be the most detailed plan out there, but for campers looking to get free insight into the process, it’s a solid place to start. They also offer a small but helpful forum for beginners and seasoned teardrop pros.

1. Chesapeake Light Craft Build-Your-Own Teardrop Camper Kit And Plans

Chesapeake Light Craft started out as a boat manufacturer producing lightweight watercraft in the beautiful Chesapeake bay area.

Their kit taps into a lot of what they learned by making wooden boats.

This gives the teardrop trailer an organic look as opposed to the sort of “Canned Ham” look that you find in a lot of teardrop campers with a metal exterior shell. 

The tradeoff here is that you do need to go the extra mile to preserve and maintain the wood exterior.

Without proper storage, in the winter the elements can start to affect the finish causing it to dull.

So, if you do pull the trigger with this kit, you should store this teardrop trailer indoors or in a garage when you aren’t traveling with it.  

The camper is designed to be built on a 5’ X 8’ trailer frame. This gives it enough room for a full-size bed in the interior sleeping space, while also affording enough room for a rear hatch that can house a modest RV kitchen.

Based out of Philadelphia birch campers is made up of a team of highly experienced fabricators.

The kit comes with what you need to build the most of the teardrop trailer.

This includes the basic wooden frames and steel beams as well as the Lexan window, roof vent, doors, and other hardware components.

Following the directions to the letter will give you a sturdy wooden travel trailer that serves as a blank canvas ready for your customized features. 

Here again, you are talking about a teardrop trailer with a largely wooden exterior.

This means you will either need to use treated wood or take extra measures to protect it from the elements.

A coating or two of marine-grade spar varnish will go a long way toward preventing moisture problems in the long term. 

The kit itself was designed to let you build the teardrop trailer in under 50-hours.

This makes Birch campers one of the top options for do-it-yourselfers with intermediate construction skills, or people who want to enjoy their new custom camper without having to spend all winter tinkering in the garage.

This might be a little bit of an issue if it’s hard to get affordable lumber in your area. 

The electrical kit also has you sourcing the 12-volt deep cycle house battery. Though you get everything you need to make the electrical install, including the battery box, two outlets, light fixtures, and a 15 Amp male power connection for plugging into shore power at an RV park. 

The bottomline is that while the Big Woody is a very affordable kit, you are still going to sink some extra time and money into sourcing some of the bulk materials yourself. 

4. TeardropsNW Off-Road Teardrop Trailer Kits

As the name implies Teardrops NW is manned by a team of dedicated craftsmen, and their dog, based out of the Pacific Northwest.

Their kits are precision made using state-of-the-art CNC technology. They even offer financing options to help make some of their more advanced kits accessible and affordable. 

Teardrops NW has a wide range of models, some are engineered for people who love to drive down the highway from one RV park to the next, as well as models that are designed to appeal to dry campers who want boondock off-road. 

They break their kits down into “Features” or packages to help you customize your build, or purchase just the things you need, without having to double up on something you might already have onhand.

This includes Frame & Body, Cabin, Galley, and Electrical features that can work with most of their affordable plans. 

If you are looking for a high-quality teardrop kit with a lot of easy-to-install custom options, you might want to move Teardrops NW up your list.

They have several thoughtful optional upgrades to let you build out your teardrop trailer to suit your travel style. 

The Off-Road Upgrade package includes aTimbren 3500HD axle with upgraded electric brakes, as well as modifications to the frame for greater off-road endurance. It also upgrades the base trailer to 15-inch steel rims.

If you aren’t an accomplished cabinet maker, but you want well-built cabinets in your teardrop trailer, then you need to move Teardrops NW up your list.

Overland Trailer has a very popular teardrop trailer known as the 58 Heald. So popular that the manufacturer is offering it as a clone kit.

This lets you build your own replica of their popular teardrop camper at a fraction of the price of buying direct. 

Though there are some pros and cons to this approach. The nice thing is that the teardrop trailer the plans “Clone” is made largely from metal with welded sections.

This gives you a level of durability that a wooden teardrop kit cannot match. Unfortunately, this also increases the cost and limits the customization options to just the interior and the tires.

If you are already a fan of the 58 Heald, or a metal-skinned teardrop trailer is a top priority, then this is probably the ideal kit for you. 

Since they also make the 58 Heald as part of their normal lineup, Overland Trailer provides you with one of the most comprehensive teardrop trailer kits.

This includes comprehensive manufacturing build plans, and companion videos that walk you through the construction process step by step. 

You also get the trailer frame and body wiring plans with all the necessary components.  The kit includes all the necessary wood parts that are CNC precision milled. 

It’s also important to note that the necessary plywood is included for the Galley Hatch Door, Sidewalls, and Cabinetry.

Though you cut it yourself. This spares you from having to source and transport the plywood from a hardware store, which you see with a lot of competitor models. 

Arguably the most important part of the Overland Trailer 58 Heald kit is the aluminum skin for the roof and the sidewalls.

Every part is laser cut and designed to match perfectly with the steel frame. 

The trailer components include a 1,200 pound Dexter torsion axle and brackets as well as the round steel fenders and all the necessary external lights and electrical components to ensure the trailer is truly road legal.

This might not seem like a big deal on paper, but it does come in handy when you need to go to the DMV to get the trailer officially licensed. 

6. Kuffel Creek Teardrop Trailer Plans

Kuffel Creek offers detailed plans for three of their most popular models. The Benroy, the 8-foot Cubby, and the 10-foot Comet.

One of the nice things about these plans is that they call for giving the final teardrop trailer a metal skin.

Yet they also allow for more customizable wiggle room than you get from other metallic shell teardrop trailers.

It’s important to note here that this is not so much of a “Kit” as it is comprehensive plans for high-quality teardrop trailers.

Including finding a compatible trailer. If you are an accomplished fabricator with the right tools and you want to connect with a vintage teardrop trailer construction project, then one of these three kits will be perfect for you. 

The Benroy has the vintage look and feel of the teardrop trailers that dominated the RV landscape after World War Two.

It is easy to tow and boasts superior aerodynamics. There is a single side door to access the interior and a spacious kitchen in the rear hatch.

The 8-foot Cubby is a step up in size and robustness of engineering. It needs to be built on a 5’ X 8’ trailer frame.

This can make it a little tricky to source the 5-foot wide sheet of aluminum you will need to skin the roof, as opposed to the 4-foot wide skin used in a lot of smaller aluminum shell teardrop trailers.

You’ll appreciate the cabinet storage space inside as well as the relatively large kitchen behind the rear hatch. 

The 10-foot Comet is the largest of the Kuffel Creek plans. This means you get a lot of interior sleeping and storage space, with enough elbow room to bring a young child or perhaps two children with you.

Step by Step DIY   Instruction Guide

1st step - The Trailer 

Before you do anything, You need a trailer. 4 x 8 or 5 x 8 is what this kit is intended for, But if you are making any additional modifications in size, you can still use this guide As an outline. I prefer 4 x 8 for a number of reasons. First of all, everything you purchase in materials in any big box store comes in  4 x 8. Sheets of plywood, 2 x 4's, Etc. Also remember, If you're building your own trailer, It's because you're trying to keep costs down. Anything larger then 4 x 8 blows the budget. Our 5 x 8's are just as easy to assemble with the only difference being an extra foot for additional space.

Back to the trailer. You have a number of choices. You can order from the USA. Harbour Freight tools sells them. But by the time you pay for shipping and duty you've already paid double what you thought you were going to get it for. You can make your own with parts from Princess Auto here in Canada, but by the time you buy each individual part you're getting up there in price.

Not to mention you also need to weld your frame. Kijiji always has used trailers to choose from and at times you can get a good deal. Just make sure if you do buy used, check the frame for rust, and do yourself a favour and check the wheel bearings, maybe even replace and re-grease.  We also now carry new welded frames as well, with VIN # and 2500lb ez lube axles. 46 1/2 inches sleeping area is just shy of a double. 58 1/2 inches is just shy of a queen. 6 feet in length, which allows 2 feet for your kitchen.

Congratulations ! If you are reading this, You finally made the decision to become part of a unique type of camper. A proud teardrop trailer owner. Our goal here is to be as helpful as possible to all you newbies out there that want to build your own trailer and save on your pocket book at the same time. There's nothing more satisfying then building something for yourself. It doesn't hurt to get a little help along the way. Well let’s get started. I hate wasting time.

Replace inside dimensions of

46 1/2 with 58 1/2

Step 2 - The Trailer Base

Ok. Now that we got that out of the way lets begin with a 1/2inch 4 x 8 sheet of plywood. This is pretty straight   forward. Make sure it’s lined up properly with the frame of the trailer. This is your base. If it’s not lined up    properly, You will have problems later on down the road. Make sure you use bolts to secure it in place. Every trailer is different so this part is all up to you. Once you have secured your sheet of plywood, you’re ready for the next step. 2 x 4’s and the insulation. If your building a 5 x 8, add the extra foot wide plywood to the base.

If you have the kit, you already have the cut 2 x 4’s and ready to screw into the plywood. If you don't have our kit, Cut four 2x4s@ 46 1/2 in length ( 58 1/2 if it's a 5 x 8 ). Before doing this next step you may want to think about flipping your trailer upside down and spraying it with a rubberized undercoating. You don’t have to, but it will give your teardrop trailer the extra protection from all the elements.

Undercoating is not supplied in any of our kits, but can be purchased at any retail automotive supply stores. I got mine at Canadian Tire. Now for the 2 x 4’s and the Insulation. Again, Insulation does not come with any of the kits and is not needed, but it does offer support to the Floor and the obvious, Insulation.

You could replace the Insulation with a couple extra 2 x 4’s in the middle of the four - 2 x 4’s provided with the Kit, In order to save a little $$$. I believe one sheet of 1 1/2’ Insulation is about $20 at home depot. A 2 x 4 is only $3. For this demonstration and all my trailers I use Insulation.

Anything to help keep out the heat.  Grab the 4 pre cut 2 x 4’s.Space them out across the floor. If you are using Insulation, pre cut your sheet again to  46 1/2 ” (or 58 1/2 for 5x8 ) then cut Each section to fit between the 2 x 4’s. Now if you have the kit, grab the sheet of precut floor board ( 46 1/2 ) (or 581/2 for 5x8 ) and screw the board into the 2x4’s . Centre your 2 x 4’s between the 4 x 8 sheet. You now Have your base. Depending on the size of your  Styrofoam Insulation, 2 feet or 4 ft wide, your 2 x 4’s will be spaced Accordingly. Don’t worry, they don’t have to be exact. ( See pictures below )

Optional - False Flooring for additional storage under bed and in Kitchen.

Although our teardrop trailer kits do not come precut for false flooring, you may want to consider taking this part of the project on yourself. Instead of using four 2 x 4s you positon three. One in the middle and the other two on each end. Between those 2 x 4s you can cut  four 2 x 6s and center them. This leaves you enough space to cut out your doors and remove the insulation. ( see pictures below )

For example, the first teardrop camper build kit in the list below costs just over $1,000. Now, that may sound like a lot but consider this: bottom-range teardrop campers average $8,000 to $12,000.

Of course, you have to own your own trailer as well. A brand new, 4’ x 8’ trailer will cost around $1,200 to $1,400. However, jump on the Facebook Marketplace, and you will find plenty of used ones for far less. You don’t need a brand-new trailer for this job.

You’ll clean it and gut it before you start the work anyway. Even if you factor in the cost of a brand new trailer with the costs of DIY teardrop camper build kits, you’re still sitting at ¼ the price of bottom-of-the-barrel teardrops on the market.

How Much Does it Cost to Buy a DIY Teardrop Camper Build Kit?

Teardrop camper build kit pricing depends on where you go and what you want. Some will cross that $8,000 limit we covered. However, if the kit is priced at $8,000, you better believe the fully manufactured version will be three times that.

The reason is labor. It’s just like fixing your car. An alternator will run you $80 to $150, and it’s free to install. Take it to a mechanic, who will run a diagnostic for $75 and put two people on the repair. The labor cost is $72 an hour, and it will take them three hours to finish.

That comes to $432, not including the diagnostic, additional service fees, and the price of the alternator. You’re dealing with the same thing here. DIY teardrop trailer build kits will run anywhere from $1,000 to $10,000 and save you a ton of money either way.

The Big Woody Teardrop Camper Ultimate Kit is the ultimate kit for a great price. They manufacture kits based on the 1940s and 1950s aesthetics, attempting to bring back the good old days following World War II.

Most of their kits (including this one) come in 4’ x 8’ and 5’ x 8’ varieties, and you can stick with the basic, ultimate camper kit or go with a bit of customization. You may have to go the extra mile to preserve the exterior. The description doesn’t specify the level of protective application on its exterior components.

The kit includes a massive and detailed manual with over 200 pictures, templates, and free technical support if you hit a snag. You’ll have to supply your own trailer, and the underlying insulation and storage options are up to you.

2. HYK Outdoors Teardrop DIY Starter Kit

✅ Complete shell starter kit or full build kit on offer

The great thing about HYK Outdoors is that they offer the complete teardrop trailer or the starter kit for its most popular 5×8 model. This is the kit you want if you like the idea of doing all of your own wiring and prefer a high level of personal customization.

The starter kit includes the entire shell framework, cut from pre-finished birchwood and ready to assemble. This is their 5×8 model, so you will need a similar-sized trailer to get started.

The shell is simple enough to assemble, and according to HYK, you can have it done in a single weekend. HYK also partners with several accessories retailers you can dive into if you want to add a few components to the shell before HYK ships to your door.

3. Chesapeake Light Craft Build

After making a name for itself as a boat-building kit company, Chesapeake Light Craft decided to try its hand at teardrop campers. The base kit ships with the entire shell and the trim framework for doors and windows.

The wood shell is heavily coated in bronzed fiberglass, which looks incredible. You have the option of adding a handful of additional components as well, including an electrical template. However, the trailer and the wiring are all on you.

This 5×8 model is designed to bolt down on any trailer, leaving your options wide open. If you enjoy exterior galleys, this is one of the most complex and intricate offerings on the list. The kit also includes glue and tacking hardware.

4. Birch Campers Sprig

The ultra-lightweight Birch Campers brand offers two camper sizes—the BIGSPRIG and the SPRIG. Both include the CNC machined panels needed to fully construct the shell, which doesn’t include the flooring or the trailer. The BIGSPRIG is designed to install on a 5×8 trailer.

The panels are made from Baltic Birch Plywood, and Birch Campers advises customers to purchase the same for their flooring. The entire kit includes the window and door trim, with included screens, along with the stainless hardware kit.

To put the build together, you’ll need the glue and brads, along with a premium seal or stain to protect the shell. The BIGSPRIG also offers several optional components, including roof racks, vents, interior shelves, and hooks for additional storage.

6. Overland Trailer Teardrop Trailer Kit

Overland Trailer’s most popular model is the 58 Heald. Instead of taking out a second mortgage to afford one, they are now offering the same design in a DIY kit for a fraction of the cost.

Though the full kit is a little costly, it’s still better than the complete trailer, which is nearly three times the amount. You don’t have to go with that option since Overland Trailer also offers an essentials kit.

The full DIY teardrop camper build kit includes the entire frame, CNC machine cut panels, doors, cabinets, and a full video walkthrough. The kit includes the aluminum skin and a wiring plan, though the wires and wiring are up to you. However, Overland does supply the electrical components.

How and Why I Built My Own Teardrop Camper Trailer

A couple of years ago, Colorado-based maker Werner Strama decided to make his own Teardrop Camper Trailer from scratch. It took him six months to build and the end result is beautiful and fully functional. Best of all, Werner documented his build in detail and shared his 26-step how-to with us (thanks Werner!). Here in the office, we were all really impressed with his project, and apparently we’re not the only ones, since his build has gotten roughly 400,000 views. We got in touch with Werner to find out how and why he chose to take on this project. Check out Werner’s Teardrop Camper Trailer how-to, then read about his inspiration and R+D process. 1. What inspired you to build your own camper trailer?

I got inspired after camping in Lake McConaughy in Nebraska. We went there in 2009 with some friends for a sailboat weekend. We were in a small dome tent, the place is beautiful, but the wind was howling, and the tent was flat on our faces all weekend. There were some monstrous black biting horse flies, frogs all over the place, flying beetles got in the tent, and at one point the wind flies and the sand made it impossible to cook. I enjoyed it (sort of) but my wife told me that unless we get something better to camp in, she was out. She’s had several surgeries and sleeping on the ground is very uncomfortable for her. Also, she needed some place to rest and shade from the sun.

I got to thinking about getting a pop-up camper, but that would be almost the same as having a tent: it’s no use in a windy situation, as well as being hot on a sunny day and the added maintenance issues with the fabric. Another issue was towing; at the time we had a 4-cylinder car with a limited tow capacity. After searching on the internet I stumbled on a website called Teardrops n Tiny Travel Trailers , and after searching the whole website I got sold on the small form factor, low weight, and sturdiness of the teardrop shape. My wife helped with the research and she liked the idea.

2. What was your R+D process for the build?

After we decided on the teardrop, I started collecting hundreds of pictures of all the items we believed would be best for our needs: that is, three person sleeping area, a small kitchen in the back, self-powered when needed, very well insulated, for we would be going camping year round to different places, especially hot springs (we have very nice ones in Colorado). Also I needed to keep the costs down so not to be a burden on our finances, and not to fall into the “credit card trap.”

I enrolled my neighbor Denny since he is just an amazing bargain hunter on camping stuff; he was the one who found the old popup camper for free, as well as the stove with the oven, which turned out to be a very nice touch. With the trailer chassis, I set to calculate dimensions and average weights to maintain 12–15% of the total weight on the hitch, which would make sure the trailer would be stable. All it takes is some simple math and three bathroom scales. Then it was a matter of getting the wood, some extra tools, like a router, and a sabre saw to cut the profiles.

3. How long did the actual build take you and what was the biggest challenge?

The actual build time was roughly six months working on weekends and days off. We set up to make it utilitarian, but not a “work of art,” which could take more time than needed. It’s the “keep it simple system” that is best for a trailer that will see lots of use and abuse. I was very motivated and I had lots of support from my wife, as well as setting goal times to finish specific parts of the build. The due date was the weekend before Memorial Day in 2010, and the last couple of weeks were sort of madness with paint and finish.

I think the biggest challenge was the assembly of the walls; it required lots of woodwork and learning to use the router to cut the channels on the 2×4 wood pieces. Once I learned the tricks of using the router, I was able to do flush cuts and shaping in almost no time. I also made a couple of jigs to make the cabinets, which turned out very useful.

4. What’s your favorite feature of the camper trailer?

I think the best feature of the trailer is the size. I can tow it to remote places where an average camper would not get easily. The turning radius is excellent, and a couple of times I was able to turn around on narrow dirt mountain trails without having to unhook and turn around manually. The other great features are the insulation and the ceiling fan; we’ve been in places where if we had been in a tent we would have been roasted extra crispy. Inside it’s cool and very breezy when needed. Also, I’ve been using it as my living quarters when I go contracting out of town, camping on BLM lands at night, and it has kept me quite nice and warm several weeks in mid-winter with outside temperatures of –10°F.

5. Where have you taken the camper trailer?

Currently we’ve only been in Colorado: the Colorado sand dunes, Buena Vista, Grand Junction, The Grand Mesa, at different campgrounds in the Rocky Mountain National Park, the Colorado Monument park, and also “camp at home” when my daughter wanted to have a “camping night” in the backyard.

6. What improvements have you made (or are planning to make) to the original design?

I’m planning on covering the teardrop in fiberglass, as I have noticed that hail had damaged some of the top, which I have since repaired. Also maybe in the future remove the propane stove and replace it with and old style Coleman fuel cabin stove, as propane doesn’t work well at altitude or in very cold temperatures.

7. Tell us about yourself. How long have you been making things and how did you get started?

I grew up in Peru, South America, and since I was a kid I liked to tinker with anything that needed to be repaired at home, be it a bike, electricity, telephones, old tube radios, etc. My wife sometimes thinks I am “nuts” when I rebuild things at home. I work as an Airframe and Powerplant Mechanic, contracting here and there. The teardrop was not complicated compared with some of the aircraft that I work with. Being patient and organizing the flow of things helps a lot. I currently live in Colorado, but we are planning on moving to Florida, as aviation jobs are quite scarce over here.
