Arunachal Pradesh, sometimes known as “the land of the dawn-lit mountains,” is one of India’s few remaining untouched wildernesses. Its glacial landscape, alpine meadows, and subtropical rainforests are home to a diverse range of distinct civilizations, peoples, and tribes, as well as over 500 orchid species. The capital, Itanagar, is located near Jorhat and north of the Brahmaputra. The road from Bhalukpong at the Assamese border to Tawang’s monastery rises steeply over rocky hills, streams, and old trees before crossing the beautiful Sela Pass (4300m) in the state’s far west. Along the way are the Buddhist communities of Bomdila and Dirang. Namdapha National Park in the far northeast is home to both cloud and snow leopards. The unspoiled, remote middle highlands of Arunachal, home to many tribes, hide some of the most spectacular Himalayan sites, including the mystical Pemako Buddhist area.

Join us for a lifetime cycling adventure in Arunachal and Assam that will leave you mesmerized! A great week of cycling awaits in Arunachal as we head northwards across the Mishmi Hills, a mountain range that acts as a transition between the Himalayas and the Indo-Burma mountains. The fauna and the geography alter drastically - from the tea estates of Assam to the forest near the base of Mishmi Hills. This is a trip that takes you through the land that is truly the Shangri-la of Asia. What makes Arunachal truly remarkable among all places on earth is the sheer diversity of its landscape packed into a few thousand square km – from perennially snow-covered mountains over 7000m high, to temperate woodlands to tropical rainforests, the geography and climate in Arunachal change dramatically every few hundred miles to make sure that no two days are alike on this cycling trip.

Another week if spent in Assam. Think Assam and the two things that come to your mind are rhinos and tea estates. And for good reason too. Assam after all is one of the last remaining refuges of the one-horned rhinoceros and is the single largest tea-growing region in the world. However, our Assam cycling tour takes you also to hidden nooks and crannies of this fabulous land that has been bountifully blessed with the triple gifts of nature, culture, and cuisine. From the unique cultural geography of Majuli, the largest river island in the world to walking the trail of critically endangered animals such as the Hoolock Gibbon and the Bengal Slow Loris, this is a trip on which each day is an exciting new adventure.

Day 1 : Dibrugarh

Dibrugarh in the northeast corner of Assam is known as the Tea City of India as it is home to some 144 tea estates. We meet post-lunch to visit the Mancotta Tea Estate which is home to a gracefully restored 150-year-old property built in the traditional style of using stilts known as Changs. We get to learn more about the famous Assam tea here, observing at close quarters all the various operations from picking to packing that bring the world’s favorite beverage from tea estates to morning cups the world over. Assam is the largest single tea growing region in the world and its tea is unique, unlike in most other tea growing regions, Assam tea is not grown in highland areas but at or close to the sea level, giving it its malty taste and bright colors. We meet in the evening for a bike fit and a tour briefing. Tonight, our stay is at the Chowkidinghee Heritage Bungalow, an early 20th-century property built in colonial style and standing on the edge of a tea estate. Expect the sweet aroma of tea leaves to waft through the window first thing in the morning to wake you up refreshed for an exciting journey ahead.

Day 2 : Inthong

We begin the day’s cycling with a visit to Namphake village on the outskirts of Dibrugarh. This village is one of a kind as it is home to the Tai Phake people, a tiny community of only about 5000 in India most of whom are settled in this village. The Tai Phake migrated from Myanmar and Thailand in the 17th & 18th centuries and practice Buddhism. The town has a beautiful Buddhist monastery. As we bike along the languidly meandering Dihing river, we get to witness a curious geographical feature formed by the river’s meandering curves – oxbow lakes. Oxbow lakes are horseshoe-shaped lakes formed by the meandering path of rivers with a wetland at their center. The Dihing river forms a beautiful oxbow lake at Sasoni Merbil, an ecotourism spot that is a birder’s paradise. The terrain remains flat for the most part.

Dibrugarh-Inthong.png

Day 3 : Namsai

Today we enter Arunachal Pradesh and begin cycling due east. We cross the Dihing river and cycle through the historical town of Ledo, the easternmost railway station in India, and the starting point of the historical Ledo road – a 1726 km road built by the Allies during the Second World War to connect Ledo to Assam to China. Constructed under the supervision of General Joseph Stilwell of the US Army, the Ledo road was the lifeline that allowed the Allies to send supplies to China as it was being overrun by Japan.

Inthong-Namsai.png

Day 4 : Roing

A great day of cycling awaits as we head northwards across the Mishmi Hills, a mountain range that acts as a transition between the Himalayas and the Indo-Burma mountains. The fauna and the geography alter drastically through the ride today - from tea estates to the forest near the base of Mishmi Hills. We experience the colorful lives and livelihoods of the Mishmi people who inhabit this region.

We continue riding due north across the mighty Lohit, a powerful, swift-flowing river originating in Tibet that is a major tributary of the Brahmaputra river. The Lohit is also known as the river of blood because of the high levels of lateritic soil that it brings down from the Mishmi hills. Wild orchids and rhododendrons bloom along its fertile banks. Once across the Lohit, we enter the Himalayan foothills and ride past low-rising mountains and fields of wild orchids to reach Roing, the last major township along India’s north-eastern frontier.

Namsai-Roing.png

Day 5 : Roing

Today you can plan your own day. Spend the day reading a book right next to the Siang river or go for a birding tour in Mishmi Hills, a heaven for bird watchers, with a local guide.

Itinerary Image

Day 6 : Pasighat

This is an exciting riding day as we cross the Siang river to head west towards our eventual destination, Pasighat. The flora consists of sub-tropical vegetation such as bamboo forests and betel nut trees. The Siang river flows through the dense forests with the Mishmi hills in the backdrop presenting a picture postcard setting to the day’s ride.

Roing-Pasighat.png

Day 7 : Dibrugarh

Today we head back to Dibrugarh. We start riding through the interior tribal villages of Arunachal over undulating terrain with the Brahmaputra river as our constant companion. With over 77% of its land area under tree cover, Arunachal is home to some of the last untouched forests in India, and indeed the entire world and you can appreciate those nuances on today's ride. Later we shuttle back to Dibrugarh and get ready to bike Assam for our next phase of the cycling holiday.

Itinerary Image

Day 8 : Majuli

Today is a day of experiencing wonders, natural and man-made, that can only be described in superlatives. We ride out due south-west towards Majuli, the largest river island in the world. We get there by crossing the Bogibeel bridge, the longest rail-cum-road bridge in India. The Brahmaputra – the 9th largest river in the world by discharge – shall be our constant companion from here on. The Brahmaputra is the only river in India that is regarded as male and as we cross its mighty sweep, we get to appreciate why. The Majuli island is approachable only by boat and we ride in one to explore the island’s unique geography and culture. Life in Majuli is laid back, as is expected of a place cut off from the rest of the world by a powerful and ferocious river. Stay tonight is at Okegiga Homes. A charming bamboo cottage built on stilts in the local style, this simple yet delightful property lives up to its name.

Itinerary Image

Day 9 : Jorhat

We start the day with a boat ride in the Brahmaputra river. A unique feature of Majuli’s cultural life is the presence of Vaishnavite monasteries that bind the society together with their distinctive rituals and customs. Their mode of worship includes expressing their devotion through dance and drama in vivid colorful costumes that present a striking spectacle. Post lunch, we begin the day’s cycling. We head south this day towards the city of Jorhat. Once again, we cross the mighty Brahmaputra and feel overwhelmed by its sheer presence. Jorhat is an important cultural and urban center in Assam. We stay tonight at the Thengal Manor, a heritage property built in 1929 by an affluent Assamese planter family. The property is situated 15kms from the city of Jorhat in the midst of verdant tea gardens. Since tea plantations are the lifeline of Assam, and tea planters the region’s aristocracy, the Thengal Manor offers you a glimpse into what it is like to live the planter’s life. With its colonial architecture, antique wooden décor, charming fireplaces, and sprawling gardens, the Thengal Manor is sure to make you feel like an aristocrat yourself.

Itinerary Image

Day 10 : Jorhat

Today we ride out to the Hoollongapar Gibbon Sanctuary, a verdant forest of canopied evergreen trees that is home to two critically endangered animals - the Hoolock Gibbon and the Bengal Slow Loris. The Hoolock Gibbon is the only species of ape found in India and is concentrated mostly in Assam. It is considered one of the most endangered primates with only 5000 individuals surviving in the world. The Bengal Slow Loris is another threatened species found in this forest, though being nocturnal, it is hard to spot. In addition, the sanctuary is home to various other threatened animals such as the Assamese macaque, tigers, and wild elephants. With its beautiful Hollong and Nahar trees forming dense canopies, the sanctuary is a tropical paradise. We take a motorized Safari inside the sanctuary.

Itinerary Image

Day 11 : Kaziranga

Today we head out in a westerly direction, riding parallel to the Brahmaputra, towards Kaziranga. Kaziranga is famous the world over as the home of the one-horned rhinoceros. It is a reputation well-earned. With 2413 rhinos, Kaziranga is home to two-thirds of the world’s one-horned rhino population. It is also home to the densest tiger population of any protected area in the world, besides hosting wild elephants, wild buffaloes, and the Gangetic dolphin. Of the 35 mammal species found in Kaziranga, 15 are on the IUCN red list of threatened animals. A vast expanse of marshland, elephant grass, and tropical rainforests crisscrossed by 4 rivers and populated with some of the most fascinating beasts on earth, Kaziranga is everything you ever imagined a wildlife safari to be. Today’s ride takes us through numerous tea plantations and beautiful Assamese villages.

Itinerary Image

Day 12 : Kaziranga

This day we give our bikes a rest to explore the beauty of Kaziranga. We begin the day with an early morning guided safari into Kaziranga keeping our fingers crossed for our tryst with the park’s most famous inhabitant, the one-horned rhino. We return to our hotel for lunch. In the evening we return again for a safari into Kaziranga to see more of its amazing wildlife.

A 7 Day Travel Guide and Itinerary for Arunachal Pradesh : Experience the Land of Dawn Lit Mountains

A 7 Day Travel Guide and Itinerary for Arunachal Pradesh : Experience the Land of Dawn Lit Mountains

The land of dawn lit mountains, Arunachal Pradesh , with its vast forest cover, pristine valleys and snow capped Himalayas, is one of India’s best kept secrets. Arunachal Pradesh is located in the North Eastern tip of India and is bordered by three countries, Bhutan , China and Myanmar and two Indian states in the south, Assam and Nagaland. This state, though has gained some popularity among travellers in the recent past, owing to the famous Ziro Festival of Music , it is still far from commercialisation as compared to Himalayan destinations in the northern part of India like Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand.

arunachal pradesh bike trip

Travelling to Arunachal Pradesh is about setting on an adventure in true sense where travellers encounter multiple layers of history and culture, learn to communicate straight from their hearts and learn to enjoy the wilderness. One would not find luxurious stays across the state but can expect to put up at home-stays run by locals having basic amenities where safety and hygiene is ensured. In several places, camp sites are also available where travellers could spend a night, enjoying barbecue and bonfire under starry skies.

Indian Nationals

Foreign nationals, best time to visit arunachal pradesh, how to reach guwahati, how to reach bomdila, where to stay in bomdila, what to do in bomdila, where to stay in tawang, day 4 – explore tawang, day 5 – bum la pass, sangetsar lake, panga teng tso lake, where to stay in tezpur, day 7 – fly out from guwahati, arunachal pradesh 7 day itinerary – summary, share this:, how to enter arunachal pradesh : permit and process.

It may be noted that Arunachal Pradesh shares its borders with China which is the primary reason why entry to the state is not kept unmonitored for travellers. There are two different processes for Indian and Foreign Nationals to obtain the entry permits, which are explained below.

  • Indian citizens are required to obtain an Inner Line Permit (ILP) to enter Arunachal Pradesh.
  • Your itinerary should be finalised before you apply for the permit as the permit will be issued based on districts you mention. Please note that your itinerary must follow any of the 12 tourist circuits created by the Arunachal Pradesh Tourism Board.
  • An eILP can be acquired from this portal or it can also be obtained from Guwahati Airport.
  • You would need scanned copies of your Identity proofs and passport sized photographs to apply for the ILP.
  • The Inner Line Permit is of two kinds, one for single applicant and the other is for groups where the details of primary applicant are to be entered.
  • An ILP is issued for a maximum period of 30 days.
  • The fee is charged per person per district you are visiting. You can expect to pay a few hundred for the permit.
  • You have to enter the name and contact number of a local reference. You may speak to your homestay owners beforehand and use their reference. All of them are aware of the drill and are helpful.
  • Foreign Nationals are required to obtain a Protected Area Permit (PAP) to enter Arunachal Pradesh.
  • Even with a valid PAP, foreigners are not allowed to visit certain areas in the state. Thus, a proper research is essential.
  • Please note that your itinerary must follow any of the 12 tourist circuits created by the Arunachal Pradesh Tourism Board.
  • The PAP is to be acquired manually from the Deputy Resident Commissioner Office of Arunachal Pradesh located in Guwahati. You’d have to pay a fee of $50 in the office.
  • It is important to note that a PAP is only issued to groups, if you wish to travel throughout the state. For solo travelers, the permit is only issued to travel to Ziro Valley, Tawang and Bomdila. You may look for other group of travelers to obtain the full permit.
  • The office functions between 10am to 5pm and applications for obtaining a PAP are accepted only till 2pm.
  • A local reference and their contact number is a must. You may speak to your homestay owners beforehand and use their reference.
  • An alternative option is to apply through a travel agency to save your time and energy and in case you are unable to find a group as a solo traveler. However, expect to pay a few extra thousand rupees if you go by this process.

The best months to visit Arunachal Pradesh, and follow this 7 Day Arunachal Pradesh Itinerary,  are April-May and October-November. The weather is pleasant during these months making your travel quite comfortable.

High altitude regions like Tawang, Sela Pass etc. would be covered in snow during the winter months. So if you are comfortable to travel through spine chilling cold and fancy to see a white Arunachal, winter is your month. But make sure you check the weather forecast beforehand to avoid roadblocks or any other mishaps.

In order to make the most of your Arunachal Pradesh Sightseeing Trip, you should avoid the monsoon months that last between June to September.

A detailed 7 day itinerary to travel to Arunachal Pradesh

Day 1 – guwahati to bomdila.

The first day of your travel shall necessarily contain two segments. First, to reach Guwahati and second, to travel to Bomdila from Guwahati. It is advisable to arrive in Guwahati by early noon so that you have enough time to get to the bus depot and find yourself a bus.

  • Fly to Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi Airport in Guwahati.
  • Take a train to Guwahati.
  • From Guwahati Airport or Railway Station, head to ISBT bus depot from where you can find overnight buses to Bomdila.
  • You would reach Bomdila the next morning.

Day 2 – Explore Bomdila

As you reach Bomdila on the second day, check in to your hotel/homestay and freshen up to start the day and explore the town.

arunachal pradesh bike trip

  • Holiday Hills
  • Doe-Gu-Khil Guest House
  • Hotel Tashi Den

Surrounded by various snow capped peaks, Bombila is a scenic destination situated in the Eastern Himalayas. A home to various indigenous tribes, Bomdila is a place where you can explore the monasteries, go hiking and walk through the apple orchards and valleys covered with flowers.

  • Visit the Bomdila Monastery built in 1965, divided into Upper Gompa, Middle Gompa and Lower Gompa out of which the Upper Gompa is the biggest one located on a steep hill.
  • Hike up to RR Hill , the highest point in Bomdila to enjoy the spectacular and panoramic views of Bhutan and Tibet.
  • If you still have some time to explore, you may take a vehicle to head to Eagle’s Nest Sanctuary , 20 kms outside the town. If you are interested in bird watching, you should definitely not miss this place.
  • Head to the apple orchards to take a stroll and also buy some apples for yourself.

Day 3 – Bomdila to Tawang (Explore Sela Pass and Sela Lake enroute)

This leg of the journey might not work too well if you are travelling solo. You can only stop at Sela Lake and Sela Pass if you have reserved a vehicle all for yourself, not a feasible option for a solo traveller. The cost splits in a group.

arunachal pradesh bike trip

There are shared sumos that cost around INR 500 till Tawang. The journey might take somewhere around 8 hours. Solo travellers can also  manage to tag along with other groups to share the costs of a reserved vehicle.

After arriving in Tawang, spend the evening walking through the mystic streets and gazing at the snowy peaks of Eastern Himalayas and sleep early to compensate for the tiring journey.

  • Dondrub Homestay
  • Hotel The Oak

The arrangement of vehicle to travel to Bum-la Pass and the various lakes must be done on this day itself so that permits can be easily obtained.

Tawang is one of those places to which photographs and words do no justice explaining the beauty. It is a remote settlement at an altitude of 305 meters, set against mighty Himalayas, dotted with glacial lakes, it is rightly known as the hidden paradise. Though situated in the extreme corner of the country, it is well developed in general. There are plenty of options to stay, many restaurants to eat at.

You can divide the two days in Tawang into nearby locations to visit, which can be covered on foot and the ones situated a bit far off, like Bum-la Pass, for which you’d require a vehicle.

arunachal pradesh bike trip

  • Start the day by visiting the Tawang Monastery , the biggest monastery in India and second largest in the world. A three storied monastery situated at a height of 3000 meters is no less than a scenic wonder. Explore the library the old scriptures to learn about Buddhism.
  • Head to Urgelling Gompa , a rather small but historically significant monastery which is the birthplace of the 6 th Dalai Lama.
  • Visit the Tawang War Memorial , which commemorates the martyrdom of 2140 Indian soldiers of Indo-China War. You can also check the souvenir shop beside the War Memorial.
  • In the evening, head to the cosy cafe, Dharma Coffee House and browse through their books.
  • Relish on a sumptuous dinner at Dragon  or Orange Restaurant Lounge Bar.

arunachal pradesh bike trip

If you wish to book a vehicle to take you to all of these places, you may opt for the same. A Tata Sumo can charge you between INR 2000-3000 for the whole day, depending on whether it is the peak season or not.

On this day, you are all set to travel to the wilderness and travel towards Bum La Pass , the Indo-China border. A Tata Sumo generally takes INR 5000 for the entire day to take you to these places. It works fine when you are travelling in a group but not for solo travelers. People traveling solo may tag along with another group at the taxi stand. Talk to the drivers or your hotel management beforehand so that they may be able to suggest you about other groups who are moving ahead on the same direction. There are bike rentals as well which is the best bet for all adrenaline junkies. However remember that the terrain is extremely rough so set out in a bike only if you are experienced enough.

arunachal pradesh bike trip

You need a permission from the Office of the Deputy Commissioner in Tawang District to go to Bum La Pass. Situated at an altitude of 4633 meters, it is a place where Indian Soldiers guard the country. The Pass is historically and culturally significant as well for it is known that Dalai Lama had entered India through this Pass.

Visit the famous Sangetsar Lake , more famously known as Madhuri Lake, named after the actress Madhuri Dixit as she had shot a few scenes of a movie in this spot. Also, stop by the beautiful Panga Teng Tso Lake . These lakes remain frozen during winters.

Day 6 – Tawang – Bomdila – Tezpur

It is your last day in Tawang and you have to travel a long distance on Day 6 of this 7 Day Arunachal Pradesh Itinerary. Start early from Tawang so that you reach Bomdila by noon. To be on the safe side, book a seat in the shared vehicle a day earlier so that you don’t get pushed to the last seats which is very uncomfortable. The fare for a seat in Tata Sumo is INR 500 to reach Bomdila. You can stop in Bomdila for a while and have your lunch there. There are buses that start in the evening for Guwahati.

In case you do not manage to get a direct bus from Bomdila, you may break the travel at Tezpur. In that case the travel looks like this : Bomdila to Tezpur (Tata Sumo) and Tezpur to Guwahati (Bus). If you are opting for this alternative, you may spend the night in Tezpur and travel from Tezpur to Guwahati the next morning.

  • The Bhowmick’s Bunglow
  • Hotel Palazzo Prime

To be on the safe side, book a flight that is scheduled post 3pm from Guwahati. If you are taking a train, that too, should be scheduled in the second half of the day. This is to ensure that any unavoidable delay on the way from Bomdila/Tezpur to Guwahati does not affect your final leg of the journey.

Day 1 : Guwahati to Bomdila

Day 2 : Explore Bomdila

Day 3 : Bomdila to Tawang (explore Sela Lake & Sela Pass)

Day 4 : Explore Tawang

Day 5 : Bum-La pass | Sangetsar Lake | Panga Teng Tso Lake

Day 6 : Tawang – Bomdila – Tezpur

Day 7 : Tezpur – Guwahati | Fly out from Guwahati

  • Day 2 – Bomdila / Dirang to Tawang
  • Day 3 – Explore Things to see in Tawang
  • Day 4 – Tawang – PT Tso – Shungestar Lake (Madhuri Lake) – Bum La (India – China border) – Tawang*
  • Day 5 – Tawang  to Bomdila / Dirang
  • Day 6 – Bomdila / Dirang to Guwahati

A Week-long trip To Tawang and Bum la including Bomdilla, Dirang, and Sangti Valley – Arunachal Pradesh

Day 1 – guwahati to dirang .

We start from the Guwahati airport in the morning and enjoy our drive through the golden fields of Assam before we start ascending the hills of Arunachal Pradesh , taking a newly built road that makes for a fantastic drive and even better views.

On our way, we stop by the beautiful Gyuto monastery and spend some time exploring it. We stop for lunch at a small Tibetan settlement en route for lunch before proceeding further ahead. We halt at a lovely little town Dirang, overlooking two mountain rivers, for the night.

Day 2 – Dirang to Tawang.

We start for Tawang today and en route stops at the Nyukmadung war memorial and pay our respect to the fallen soldiers there.

Next, we stop at the mighty Se la and soak in the gorgeous views on and around it. We visit & pay our respect at the Tawang war memorial there and then warm ourselves with piping-hot tea at the army canteen there before we resume our onward journey. We stop for a small stroll by the lovely Sela Lake if time permits and then start for our next stop, the Nuranang waterfall, the sheer grandness of which is sure to make your jaws drop.

We reach our lovely homestay in Tawang by late evening and call it a day.

Day 3 – Tawang Tour.

We start our day by visiting the largest monastery in the world, the Tawang Monastery . We explore the place at our own pace before heading to the Urgeling monastery, the birthplace of the 6th Dalai Lama and the Ani Gompa.

In the evening, we visit the war memorial and experience the light and sound show there.

Day 4 – Penga Teng Tso, Madhuri Lake and Bumla.

We start early today to explore the beautiful lakes and valleys in the higher reaches of the region. On our way to our first stop, the Penga Teng Tso, we drive through what was once the battlefield.

The scars of the war can be seen scattered all around. From there we head to the uniquely beautiful Sungester Lake , also known as the Madhuri lake of Koyla (the Bollywood movie) fame.

Finally, we head towards the India-China border at Bum-la and spend some time at the border before starting our return journey to Tawang.

Day 5 – Tawang to Bomdila/Dirang.

We drive down to the Buddhist town of Dirang/Bomdilla today, taking the same road we took on our way up to Tawang. Only this time we will stay at a unique and special place for the night instead of staying at the same homestay (if staying in Bomdila ). By evening, we reach Bomdilla and stay in the monastery for the night(if available) or else at a lovely Monpa homestay, of course after exploring it.

If we stay at Dirang, it will probably be the same wonderful Dirang homestay of ours that will be your stay for the night.

Day 6 – Bomdila/Dirang to Gauhati.

We wake up early today so that we can explore the monastery once again, this time while the monks are busy praying.

After a hearty breakfast at the monastery, we start our return journey back to Guwahati which marks the end of this beautiful trip.
