Concert Review: Taylor Swift – The 1989 World Tour

SINGAPORE — It was the pop music event of the year, and it did not disappoint. Once America’s most promising country singer, Taylor Swift has grown up to become, arguably, the biggest pop star in the world — thanks in no small part to her latest album 1989, which broke all sorts of sales and streaming records when it was released last year.

Hon Jing Yi

It comes almost as no surprise that her concert on Saturday night at the Singapore Indoor Stadium blew us all away.

Swift’s show was non-stop fun, pure and simple, which started with a solid 30-minute song-and-dance routine. The singer-songwriter knew just how to start the show, leading a dozen dancers in a rousing medley of songs from 1989: Welcome To New York, The New Romantics and Blank Space.

The leggy (and very lean) star strutted up and down the stage that was designed like a catwalk, delighting fans who had lined up along the length of the platform, many having dressed up for the occasion and carrying placards.

The concert was also a bona fide spectacle, with your predictable pop concert’s share of pyrotechnics, fireworks, confetti and lasers. Each member of the audience was also given a multi-coloured LED bracelet, which flashed automatically to the beat of Swift’s music, turning the entire stadium into a mega-light show.

And just when you thought you had seen it all, Swift’s catwalk lifted off the ground and revolved around the arena, bringing the singer closer to nearly every single one of her fans — yes, including those in the cheaper seats at the back — as she strummed her guitar and sang You Belong With Me, before switching over to the keyboards for another older favourite Love Story.

Almost all of the concert’s set was dedicated to her 1989 album — she sang every track except All You Had To Do Was Stay, and offered few nods to her past work. But when she did, she ramped up the arrangement to suit the 1989 sound: For example, We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together featured an overdriven guitar riff (and a video that mimicked The White Stripes’ Seven Nation Army).

Swift kept us entertained with her choreography, her many stunning outfits and her incredible stage presence. Yet, what surprised us the most was the way she was able to create a sense of intimacy in a sold-out arena of 9,000. In between her ballads, the 25-year-old thanked the audience for coming to her show, sounding genuinely grateful that everybody seemed to know every word to every one of her songs.

“When we are all in one room singing the same songs, it doesn’t feel like there’s so much distance between us,” the singer mused.

That is perhaps why when Swift sang and danced to her last song, Shake It Off — with none of the awkwardness she showed in her music video, of course — a mere hour and 40 minutes after the show began, we were not even close to being ready to say goodbye. One hopes she didn’t find it too easy to leave us, too.

Life Is In The Small Things

Taylor Swift’s 1989 World Tour in Singapore

December 13, 2015 by Mummybean Leave a Comment

I had 7 November in my calendar for a long time because it was the day of Mei’s annual kindergarten concert . As far as I was concerned, it was the only concert on my agenda for the day… until I received a call from my sister around noon that very day.

“Do you want to go for Taylor Swift with me tonight?” she asked.

Wow, would I!

It turned out that my brother-in-law was ill, stuck in bed and in no shape to go and enjoy the concert. So my sister decided to ask me to take his ticket and go with her instead. I felt bad for him but I was also incredibly stoked and duper excited that my sister asked me along! I can’t remember the last time I’ve been to a proper adult concert! It might have been for Keane back in 2009 ! (Ok, maybe Taylor Swift isn’t exactly an adult concert but you get the drift!)

I quickly got the husband’s agreement and after fulfilling my mummy duties bringing the kids for a full-on birthday party, after which I drove like a mad woman to drop them at home, head out and buy dinner for the whole family, then home again for a quick shower before hopping into a cab to my sister’s place so we could drive to the concert together. It was intense, but I made it!

TaylorSwift1989 1

The atmosphere inside the Singapore Indoor Stadium was buzzing even before the concert proper. So many excited people! And as expected, most of the crowd looked rather… young. But we didn’t care! We had some truly great seats (Row 6, would you believe it!) and I took the time to marvel at many elaborate costumes and signs the concert goers came in and with. I quickly concluded that if your sign does not have fairy lights on it, it doesn’t cut it, sorry.

8pm drew close and every time there was a pause in the background music, that was the cue for some hysterical screaming. And then suddenly, after a number of false alarms, Taylor Swift burst onto stage with Welcome to New York . The excitement level went through the roof and like everyone else, we jumped out of our (very expensive) seats, never to sit in them again the whole night. I couldn’t believe she was just there, looking just beyond arm’s reach. We were really so near the stage it was unreal!

TaylorSwift1989 3

I’m not a huge Taylor Swift fan but I realised quite quickly that I knew a lot of her songs since they are always playing on the radio anyway. In fact, it turned out that I could sing along (at least the chorus bits) to 80% of the songs, which was good enough for me! I was singing and dancing with the rest of the crowd to 1989 hits like Blank Space, Style, and Bad Blood , but I was so happy when she performed some of her older numbers like I Knew You Were Trouble  (this was a great remix), You Belong With Me , We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together , and best of all, Love Story . Me and my sis, we were belting it out like the best of them. Better in fact, because unlike hip cool youngsters, we aunties are way past the age of being self-conscious and had no qualms coming up with cheesy dance moves. It was SO MUCH FUN.

The one time I really did feel my age was when Taylor gave the crowd advice about being true to themselves, believing in themselves, and being a person they would want to be with in a relationship. At that moment, both my sister and I realised that we are definitely not her target audience. Erm, being happily married for 10 years with two kids, I’m way past that stage of my life!

But otherwise, it was a GREAT concert. Taylor Swift is really a fantastic performer. She worked it, from the big dance numbers to the small acoustic sets, and the crowd loved her.

TaylorSwift1989-5

One downside to being so far in front was that we couldn’t get the full effect of the electronic backdrop, which my friends seated further away tell me looked amazing. Also, we spent part of the time craning to see  Taylor on that amazing stage that stretched out into the centre of the arena and then started rising till it was a few metres off the ground. It was spectacular, and definitely better if we were not on ground level.

But, like I said, the whole concert was awesome fun. Definitely one of the best nights I’ve had in a long time! My sis and I agreed that we should totally do this again soon.

Taylor Swift’s 1989 World Tour just ended with the last concert in Melbourne but  The 1989 World Tour Live  will be available on Apple Music on 20 Dec, so guess who will be reliving the moments online?

NEW YORK (REUTERS) - Pop star Taylor Swift's 1989 World Tour-Live concert video will be available exclusively on Apple Inc's music streaming service, Apple Music, starting on Dec 20, Apple said in a tweet from Apple Music's Twitter account on Sunday (Dec 13).

Swift made the announcement as she celebrated her 26th birthday on Sunday. She also tweeted a trailer for the concert video and said: "Thank you so much for all the birthday wishes. I have a little surprise for you." The trailer's description listed Jonas Akerlund as the video's director.

The singer added that an interview discussing the video would be broadcast at 9am PST (7pm Singapore time) on Monday on Beats 1, Apple's radio station. Apple officials were not immediately available for comment.

Apple introduced Apple Music in June. Apple chief executive Tim Cook said in October the music streaming service had netted more than 6.5 million paid users, and that an additional 8.5 million people were participating in a free trial.

Swift said in June she would put her hit album 1989 on Apple Music, days after the tech giant bowed to pressure from Swift and some independent music groups and labels and agreed to pay artists during a free trial of its music service.

Swift's decision came after she pulled her entire catalogue of music from online streaming platform Spotify in November 2014 and refused to offer 1989 on streaming services, saying the business had shrunk the numbers of paid album sales drastically.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed. But Bloomberg noted that it follows other arrangements that Apple has struck with star musicians to publicise Apple Music and produce programming for its service.

Rapper Drake and producer Pharrell Williams have been involved with Apple Music since its introduction in June, and in November, Apple introduced a television commercial featuring country singer Kenny Chesney, Bloomberg said.
