The gigantic crystalline-like rock formations of Yana stand proud and tall among the evergreen forests of the Western Ghats in Uttara Kannada District. Yana is an ideal destination for pilgrims, trekkers, and nature-lovers alike. A 16km trek through the cool and breezy hills brings you to the foot of the mountain where the rock formations begin. At the top, a stunning sight awaits you: the awesome Bhairaveshwara and Jaganmohini shikharas (or peaks). A cave temple dedicated to Lord Shiva lies below these shikharas. The vagaries of time have caused these limestone structures to turn blackish brown and lots of beehives dot the rock surface. A popular legend associated with Yana holds that Bhasmasura, an evil demon, performed penance to Lord Shiva and obtained the power of reducing to ashes anybody on whose head he placed his hand. An ungrateful Bhasmasura, however, soon decided to test the boon on his benefactor. To escape from him, Lord Shiva came to earth and hid in this place. Lord Vishnu taking the form of a beautiful woman Mohini, challenged the demon to dance and made him touch his own head and thereby reducing him to ashes.

Yana rocks are an adventure seeker’s ultimate destination. Yanà in Uttara Kannada district attracts trekkers and climbers from all over the world.

Why Visit Yana:

  • Hike up to the rocks: Yana attracts hikers because of its two massive rock formations, known as Bhairaveshwara hill and Mohini hill (90 meters) in height.
  • Temples: At the bottom of Bhairaveshwara hill, a Shiva temple, believed to be self emerged exists. Water drips on the Shiva Linga from the top of rocks.
  • Bird Watching: Probability of bird spotting is very high at this rocks and nearby areas.
  • Waterfalls: Trek to visit Vibhooti waterfalls will be an excellent adventure activity in Yana (9.7 kms by trek from Yana, longer road access available but 70 kms by road)

There is a Kannada saying “ Sokku iddare Yana, Rokka iddare Gokarna ”-  If you have lots of money to spend, go to Rona (Gokarna), if you are feeling over enthusiastic, visit Yanà. This saying was due to extreme difficulty one had to face in the past to reach Yana. Now well paved roads take you till the bottom of the rocks.

Mythology: The names of the majestic rocks at Yana are linked to an interesting section in Hindu mythology. A demon named Bhasmasura manages to get a unique gift that anything on which he keeps his palm burns into ashes (bhasma). With this unique skill Bhasmasura wrecks havoc and attempts to try his skill on the very person who granted the gift- Lord Shiva. Fearing his life, Lord Shiva seeks help from Lord Vishnu, who takes the shape of a beautiful woman named Mohini and appears in front of Bhasmasura. Trying to win over Mohini, Bhasmasura accepts her challenge to dance with her and perform the same steps as she does. As the dance progresses, Mohini keeps her hand over her head. Bhasmasura performs the same act and burns into ashes.

How to reach Yana: Plan about half a day to explore Yana. A visit to Yanà rocks can also be clubbed with a visit to Murudeshwara (76 kms), Gokarna (48 kms) and Karwar (90 kms) along the coastline would be a wonderful option especially for those looking to enjoy some vitamin sea.

By Train: Kumta is the nearest railway station to Yana from KSR, Bengaluru Station. You can hop on to Karwar Express which is usually scheduled for 5:30 AM from the departing destination. There are trains available from Mangaluru Railway Station to Kumta as well. Karwar Express transits via Mysuru Railway Station to Bengaluru with the station of arrival being Kumta, totally close to 470 kms away from Yana.

By Road: Travelers can either take their own vehicles and drive through the smooth NH 48 from Bengaluru to Yana which is approximately 470 kms and close to 9 hours by road.

There is bus connectivity such as KSRTC (Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation) and private buses as well up to Kumta from Bengaluru.

The closest city to Yanà, Sirsi, is about 30 kms and takes about 1 hour to reach the destination.

The next closest town to Yana is Hubli-Dharwad, which is about 104 kms give or take and takes close to 3 hours of travel by road.

By Air: The closest airport to Kumta is Debolim Airport, Goa to reach Kumta and the rest that follow are closer based on distance from the coast and connectivity. You may either hire taxis or hop on to the public transport to reach Yanà or your accommodation in Kumta or the surrounding locations.

Yana Gokarna Timings

Whatever part of India you visit, our incredible country never ceases to amaze us with its distinct age-old legends and natural wonders. From the peaks of the Himalayas to the deepest of the oceans, there is much left for us to explore throughout the country.

One such vacation to the Northern Karnataka area, located in India's second cleanest hamlet, Yana Caves, will leave you mesmerized and amazed. These caves are a magnificent sight to view and a delightful Hindu pilgrimage site in India . People often visit the caves and offer their prayers to Lord Shiva at the caves' entrance.

The magnificent structure of Yana Caves

The Yana cave complex consists of two black-coloured ant-hill-shaped gigantic hills named Bhairaveshwara Shikhara and Mohini Shikhara, situated just above the Sahyadri mountain range. Both shikaras, or hills, are created naturally from black karst limestone.

The Lord Shiva cave temple is situated at the gateway of Bhairaveshwara Shikhara, with water constantly dripping over the sculpture. The sculptures of Lord Shiva at the temple are popularly believed to have evolved under natural conditions, and people visit the Yana shrine to experience this miraculous sight.

#Trivia: Maha Shivaratri is the perfect time to come to learn about local culture. The temple organizes yearly celebrations for ten days. Thousands of devotees go from Gokarna to do the Maha Mastaka Abhisheka.

History of yana caves.

The construction of the Yana caves is explained in legend by a demon king named Bhasmasura, who could put his hands on anything and transform it into ashes. Lord Shiva personally bestowed this power on him. After receiving this ability, Bhasmasura wreaked devastation, prompting the rishis to seek rescue from Lord Vishnu.

Lord Vishnu resolved to save the people by transforming himself into a lovely lady, Mohini.

Mohini was not only a fantastic dancer but also stunning. Mohini dared Bhasmasura to dance like her, and he graciously agreed. During the dare, Mohini cleverly demonstrated a dance routine in which she placed her hand on her head, and Bhasmasura followed suit, unaware of the fatal ramifications of her actions. Bhasmasur was ultimately destroyed by his fire, which turned him into ashes.

The loose black earth and flames all around the rocky area are said to be the remnants of the demon Bhasmasura.

View from the top

You can treat yourself to a few light snacks and cold drinks as you reach the summit. The Shiv temple is built in all its splendour on the premises, with a line of worshipers waiting to pray to the naturally formed sculpture of Lord Shiva. The approach near the temple comprises a few stairs that lead tourists directly into the Bhairaveshwara caves.

A particle of black filth on the cave walls should not be touched. Before entering the cave, visitors must remove their shoes. The cave is long, with an outlet at the roof, yet you may walk from one rock to another in barely a few minutes. Because of the humidity and moisture created inside the cave, the air inside is colder than the air outside. It has a musty, earthy, and wet odour.

Why should you visit Yana Caves?

Yana cave draws trekkers because of its vast and colossal geological formations, known as Bhairaveshwara and Mohini hills, which are relatively high in height.

Cave temples—just below Bhairaveshwara hill is a Shiva temple that is said to emerge independently. As a result, it has now become a popular tourist destination.

It is a great place to enjoy the flying beauties, aka gorgeous birds, in action and enjoy the coolness of the Vibhooti waterfalls.

Yana Caves: A Spectacular Sightseeing Destination in Gokarna

Are you looking for a unique and adventurous place to visit in Karnataka? If yes, then you should definitely check out Yana Caves, a natural wonder that will leave you spellbound. Yana Caves are a pair of massive limestone formations that rise from the dense forests of the Western Ghats. They are located near the coastal town of Gokarna, which is famous for its beaches and temples.

Yana Caves are not only a geological marvel, but also a sacred site that has a fascinating legend behind it. In this article, we will tell you everything you need to know about Yana Caves, including their history, legend, trekking route, temple, and view from the top. Read on to discover why Yana Caves are a must-visit destination in Gokarna.

History and Legend of Yana Caves

Yana Caves are formed by the erosion of black crystalline karst, which is a type of limestone that contains carbon. The caves and rocks have been shaped by the action of water and wind over millions of years. The result is a stunning sight of two towering peaks that stand out from the green landscape. The peaks are named Bhairaveshwara Shikhara and Mohini Shikhara, and they are about 120 meters and 90 meters high respectively. The caves are located at the base of these peaks, and they have a total length of about 3 kilometers.

The name Yana comes from the Sanskrit word Yantra, which means a machine or device. According to Hindu mythology, Yana Caves were the hiding place of Lord Shiva, who was chased by a demon named Bhasmasura. Bhasmasura had obtained a boon from Lord Shiva that he could turn anyone into ashes by touching their head. He wanted to test his power on Lord Shiva himself, and thus he followed him everywhere.

Photo of Yana Caves 1/5 by

Lord Shiva ran away from Bhasmasura and reached Yana Caves, where he disguised himself as a rock. Lord Vishnu came to his rescue and took the form of Mohini, a beautiful woman who enchanted Bhasmasura. She lured him to dance with her, and made him touch his own head as a gesture. As soon as he did that, he turned into ashes and died. The ashes of Bhasmasura became the black rocks of Yana, and the rock that Lord Shiva hid in became the Shiva Linga, a symbol of his presence. A temple was built around the Shiva Linga inside one of the caves, and it is still worshipped by devotees today.

The legend of Yana Caves is not only an interesting story, but also a lesson on how greed and arrogance can lead to one’s downfall. It also shows how Lord Shiva and Lord Vishnu are different aspects of the same supreme reality, and how they work together to protect the world from evil.

Trekking to Yana Caves

One of the best ways to experience Yana Caves is by trekking to them through the lush forests of the Western Ghats. The trekking route to Yana Caves starts from a village called Vibhuti, which is about 18 kilometers from Gokarna. The trek is about 8 kilometers long, and it takes about 3 hours to complete. The difficulty level is moderate, and it is suitable for all age groups and fitness levels.

Photo of Yana Caves 2/5 by

The trekking route to Yana Caves is full of scenic views and attractions that will make your journey more enjoyable. You will pass by waterfalls, streams, bridges, meadows, and wildlife along the way. You will also get to see different types of flora and fauna, such as orchids, ferns, butterflies, birds, monkeys, deer, etc. The trekking route is well marked and maintained, and there are signboards and guides to help you along the way.

Yana Temple and Maha Shivaratri Celebration

Yana Temple is located inside one of the caves at the base of Bhairaveshwara Shikhara . It is dedicated to Lord Shiva, who is believed to have hidden there from Bhasmasura. The temple houses a Shiva Linga that is about 3 meters high and 2 meters wide. The Shiva Linga is covered with a silver mask that has five faces, representing the five elements of nature. The temple also has a statue of Nandi, the bull that serves as Lord Shiva’s vehicle.

Photo of Yana Caves 3/5 by

Yana Temple is a sacred and important site for the local people and pilgrims who visit it throughout the year. The temple is especially crowded during the festival of Maha Shivaratri, which is celebrated in the month of February or March. Maha Shivaratri is the night when Lord Shiva performed his cosmic dance of creation, preservation, and destruction. It is also the night when he married Goddess Parvati, his consort.

During Maha Shivaratri, devotees flock to Yana Temple to offer prayers, light lamps, chant mantras, and perform rituals to Lord Shiva. They also observe a fast and stay awake all night to seek his blessings. The temple is decorated with flowers, lights, and flags, and the atmosphere is filled with devotion and joy. The festival is a grand celebration of the power and grace of Lord Shiva, and it is a unique experience to witness it at Yana Temple.

View from the Top of Yana Hills

Another attraction of Yana Caves is the panoramic view from the top of Yana Hills. The view from the top offers a stunning sight of the surrounding landscape, which includes the forests, valleys, rivers, and villages. You can also see the Arabian Sea in the distance, and the sun setting over it.

The best time to visit Yana Caves and Rocks for enjoying the view from the top is during the winter or monsoon season, when the weather is pleasant and the sky is clear. You can also visit during the early morning or evening hours, when the light is soft and beautiful.

Vibhuti falls, yana rocks & mirjan fort – road trip in uk.

Vibhuti Falls, Yana Rocks & Mirjan Fort are the attractions for explorers/tourists/bikers on a road trip from Sirsi to Gokarna in Uttara Kannada. Of course besides the always popular beaches of Gokarna.

Vibhuti Falls, Yana Rocks – Places to Visit in Uttara Kannada

Vibhuti Falls

The Vibhuti Falls, Yana Caves & Sahasralinga are closest to Sirsi town. Sirsi is located in the Malnad region of Karnataka. Its surroundings are lush green making most of the places around it worth visiting. The region is blessed with ample rainfall. So, agriculture is the main occupation here. Arecanut and Coconut trees can be seen anywhere. Waterfalls are abundant. River Aghanashini adds to the water resources of the area around Sirsi.

Sirsi is located in the western ghats. Although you can go in any direction and enjoy good views of hills and waterfalls, here are a few points of interest around Sirsi town.

The road trip from Sirsi atop the Western Ghats to Gokarna a coastal town popular for its beaches via the hinterland roads has many surprises and popular tourist attractions en route, and the beauty of nature, flora, and fauna. This road trip will take you through the bliss of lush green forests away from the hustle-bustle of the cities. You can explore them from either Sirsi and/or Gokarna and return back in a day trip.

Gokarna in coastal Karnataka is a popular tourist destination for its beaches.

If you are visiting this region during winter, make sure to visit Vibhuti Falls, Yana Caves & the forests.

Vibhuti Falls

Vibhuti Falls in Uttara Kannada between Sirsi and Gokarna

It is a beautiful waterfall hidden in the western ghats and not yet one of those overcrowded popular tourist destinations. It is also called/spelled as Vibhooti Falls, Vibhuthi Falls.

The legend of the waterfalls is linked to the legend of Yana Rocks. It is believed that the water that comes from Yana is the Vubhuti or sacred ash, and that gives these perennial falls the name – Vibhuti Falls.

Paved pathway to Vibhuti Falls

From the entrance, you have to walk about 1-1.5 km to reach the falls. Like most waterfalls, you see the falls only once you reach the endpoint. There are benches at regular intervals for you to sit and relax or admire the nature all around you. The first half of the path is well-paved while the second half is kutcha.

Last leg of pathway to Vibhuti Falls

There is a nominal entrance fee charged by the local panchayat. Enquire the direction to the falls with locals en route to this forest area so that you do not have to waste time on the road.

Vibhuti Waterfalls

Vibhuti Falls in the Western Ghats of Uttara Kannada

The place you stand is one of the tiers of this multi-tiered waterfall. Surrounded by greenery this is a very pleasant place to spend an afternoon or morning. All you hear is the gurgling sound of water falling in layers. When I visited a group of young men were playing and swimming in the pool of the waterfalls. There were young families enjoying a sunny day there. I think it is about a 60-70 feet multi-stage waterfall.

There is a lifeguard posted at the waterfalls who keeps an eye on all the swimmers at the waterfalls.

I enjoyed the waterfalls as much as I enjoyed the walk to and from the falls. Keep about half a day to peacefully enjoy the waterfalls.

Video of Vibhuti Falls

Do watch a short video clip of the waterfalls that we captured during our trip. Watch in HD mode for the best view.

The waterfalls are at their best during the monsoons obviously. However, it may not be advisable and there may be restrictions to visit it during monsoons. The best time to visit the waterfalls is winter months i.e. October to January. A nice welcome arch was being built at the entrance when we visited in November 2017. On your way back try the Bhelpuri at the shop there.

The place is known for Leeches. The worms that suck blood without you even noticing it. We were shown the Leeches during our trip. They were about a millimeter in diameter and about an inch long. One may easily confuse them to be harmless worms. You may not even notice them. Take care they can suck blood several times their size.

You can stay at Sirsi, Gokarna, or at Sathwik Homestay in Devanahalli village. They help you do trekking, village walks, and birding trails in and around Sirsi.

Vibhuti Falls is about 44 km from Sirsi and 42 km from Gokarna. From Sirsi, you have to go via Mattighatta, Devanahalli, and Hegadekatta.

Yana Rocks, Caves & Rock Formations

Bhairaveshwara Shikhara the bigger of the Yana Rocks

Deep in the forests of the Sahyadri range of Western Ghats are these two rocks standing tall and proud. No, you do not see them from a distance. You must walk the path for a while through the jungle before the rugged rocks reveal themselves. You wonder how and where did these two tall rocks standing almost as if a couple erupts out in this lush green jungle. These are solid black limestone rocks. As you enter the complex you see a black circle that looks like ash, absolutely distinct from the rest of the brown soil surrounding it. Why is this?

The answer is in the legend. It is believed that the rocks are Bhairaveshwara and Mohini. Bhairaveshwara is Shiva and Mohini is the female avatar of Vishnu. Bhairaveshawara is the taller and bigger of the two with 120 meters of height while Mohini stands at 90 meters. There are other smaller rocks around these but none of them are so big or visible.

Legend of Yana Rocks

Mohini Shikhara of the Yana Rocks

The legend is that Asura Bhasmasura conducted Tapa. His meditation pleased Shiva. Bhasmasur managed to obtain one boon that said – if he keeps his hand on anyone, the person will turn into Bhasma or burn to ashes.

To test that the boon works, Bhasmasura wanted to keep his hand on Lord Shiva himself. Shiva ran and Bhasmasura chased him. Finally, Lord Vishnu had to step in, in his female avatar Mohini. As Mohini, he enticed Bhasmasura and invited him to dance with him. During the dance, Vishnu made a pose with a hand on his head. Bhasmasura followed and was reduced to ashes.

It is believed that the dance took place at Yana and the two large rocks were named after Shiva and Vishnu as they appear in the story. Bhaireshwara means the lord of Bhasmasura. The region is also known as Bhairav Kshetra. And pilgrims come here during Maha Shivaratri.

Walk through the Bhairaveshwara Yana Rocks

Yana Caves Temple

We visited the temple beneath Bhairaveshwara rock, where there is a Shivalinga believed to be Swayambhu or self-manifested. You can see the natural water dripping constantly on this Shivalinga. Along with the Shivalinga, there is a bronze statue of Chandika Devi. Shiva cannot be without his Shakti. The water from here flows to become Vibhuti Falls and finally merges with the Aghanashini River downstream.

Pathway around Bhairaveshwara Rock

We reached Yana towards the evening. There were hardly any people around and the walk through the jungle was a bit eerie on our return. The rocks are amazing. There is a parikrama or circumambulation path through the bigger rock. You have to walk barefoot. The small stones all along the way hurt the sole like anything. The parikrama involves a bit of climbing the stairs and then walking downstairs. There is a small Ganesha temple between the two big rocks, but it was closed when I visited.

Sky view from inside Yana Rocks

Yana rocks are about 30 km from Sirsi and 50 km from Gokarna. Prefer to visit it during the day. There is just a small shop close to the gate else there is nothing much you would get there.

Locals say there used to be hundreds of Honeycomb on the peaks of these rocks. They have substantially reduced gradually over time. Although we could spot some Honeycombs.

How to visit Vibhuti Falls, Yana Caves from Gokarna & Sirsi

Single lane road in the Western Ghats leading to Vibhuti Falls & Yana Rocks

We visited these places in a cab guided by a local relative. However, budget travelers can take an interstate bus plying between Sirsi & Gokarna and vice versa and visit them in a day. The route is single-lane and very few buses ply this route. You should inquire at Sirsi or Gokarna Bus stand and plan accordingly. Very basic food, refreshments, and toilets are there for the visitors. Most parts of these routes are jungles or forest areas. Hence if you plan to drive or ride a bike to this place take appropriate precautions. Avoid monsoon season unless you are a hardcore traveler/trekker/explorer.

Mirjan Fort

The Mirjan Fort Entrance

Mirjan Fort is a 16th CE fort built by Queen Chennabhaira Devi or Gerasoppa that was a part of the Vijayanagara Empire. Until I reached this fort I did not know this is one of the Indian monuments built by women . It is a fairly large fort close to the west coast. Mirjan port was used for trading with the ports of Gujarat. It is interesting to note that in those days Pepper was the main product and the queen was often called the Pepper Queen.

Mirjan Fort inside view

Most of the Mirjan fort is in ruins with not much maintenance. You can walk around and see its fortified walls, and its structural remains that include a few fairly large wells. A small temple dedicated to Mahishasurmardini continues to live under a tree.

Vast interiors of Mirjan Fort

The day I visited the Mirjan Fort, there were a lot of schoolchildren on a school excursion. Their presence brought some life to the Mirjan fort which would otherwise be a deserted and desolate place.

A word of caution, the Mirjan Fort, is in the coastal region which is hot most of the seasons and humid during summers & monsoon seasons. Carry drinking water and a cap to protect yourself from the harsh sun rays.

Mirjan Fort is 60 Km from Sirsi and 22 Km from Gokarna.

Recommend you explore the following places besides – near Gokarna and Sirsi like the Jog Falls , Ikkeri & Keladi .

Vibudhi Water falls and the areas looks similar to nellyambathi area in Kerala. Anuradha the places you visit are so serene and beautiful. Elephant leg washroom ????????????????

Simi – they must be the part of same bio-diversity range of the Western Ghats that is why they look similar. Yes, it was such a relief to see functional bathrooms.

This is so beautiful. Like you say, the falls look familiar probably because of similar topography. It’s nteresting to note the fort was built by a queen.

Yes, there are not too many buildings built by women after all.

I love those ancient legends where someone gets turned into ash! I’d visit Yana Rocks just to imagine it. Vibhuti Falls looks beautiful and very refreshing. Thank you for this introduction to a new part of India for me.

Fiona – western ghats are a UNESCO World Heritage Site with some of the world’s richest biodiversity. Do explore it when you next visit India.

I love the western ghats — but haven’t been to these places yet. Swimming at the base of Vibhuti Falls seems perfect for a warm day. And thanks for including the information about the legends from each place — sometimes these places that look just like any other rock have so much more meaning when you understand the stories behind them.

Western ghats are beautiful. You can never get tired of them. India is full of legends – I think we document all possible subjects through stories only.

So many incredible sights here, I love chasing waterfalls so I would love the Vibhuti falls but I’d have to watch out for the leeches 😛 – Those Elephant leg wash rooms look quite quirky from the outside – If I was to travel through India I think the western ghats would be an incredible experience.

Amit – West Ghats are the most bio-diversity rich forests of India or the world. It is a pleasure to visit them – never mind the leeches.

I love visiting waterfalls and caves! This place sounds amazing. Except maybe for the leeches, but thanks for the warning! It’s good to know about the best season to visit a waterfall because if you go at the wrong time it could be disappointing or dangerous. Good tip!

Tracie – this place is pretty safe all year round and the waterfall is perennial. Leeches you need to be careful of but I am told leech bites are not bad for humans.

What a great place to visit. I love waterfalls like that where you can swim at the bottom. As much as I like hiking, it’s nice to show it’s such a short trail to reach them, and that they’re cheap. But the Yana Rocks and Cave are what really piqued my interest. I’d love to explore them when I’m in the region. I just keep getting more reasons to make it to India!

Skye – Keep reading IndiTales and it would be difficult for you to resist visiting India.

The walk to the falls and the falls itself are amazing! I haven’t ever heard of Vibhuti Falls to be honest but then I haven’t explored Karnataka extensively so I’m not surprised. I love your pictures and the video, makes me want to jump into those pools under the waterfalls as well! And the Mirjan Fort also looks like an interesting places to explore!

Medha – Karnataka is a state that gives you great heritage and nature.

Very cool. I loved learning about Vibhuti Falls, Yana Rocks & Mirjan Fort. The Vibhuti Falls looks amazing though I dont want to be burning off leaches all the time. I would love the hike in and then going for a swim at the bottom of the falls. As for Yana Rocks, what an amazing planet we live on. I love intense geological formations like this. But what I especially love is the lore built around it. Such a cool story they created to explain who the rocks where.

Eric – I am fascinated by the country I was born in. It has a story at every step, I am just retelling them in the digital form.

The Vibudhi Water falls and the Yana caves look so beautiful! Gokarna was one of my favorite places we went to in India, and I definitely want to go back some day. I will surely make a day trips to the falls and the caves when I do! The Mirjan Fort also looks well worth exploring. India has so many incredible old forts! Pinning this post for later 🙂

Jen – India has a fort every few kilometers. Wherever you see a civilization, you would see a fort. Come back to explore more.

This is absolutely beautiful! I love how much there is to see all in one area. I’d love to visit that cave temple and my husband would LOVE to photograph those waterfalls. I love all the Hindu legends behind the different formations.

Paige – It’s time to start planning a trip to India 🙂

The Vibhuti Falls, Yana Caves & Sahasralinga looks beautiful – such a lush landscape. I love that they’re not overcrowded either – allows you to enjoy nature a lot more. Thanks for the tip on visiting in the winter months – waterfalls we have in my home state of Tasmania are seasonal too and better after rainfall. Good to note on the leeches!

Yana Rocks is quite stunning! I can see how such an imposing natural formation would inspire legends. Thanks for the tips on organizing a local bus. Would love to work a day like this into an itinerary.

Megan – western ghats in India are full of waterfalls during 4-5 month long monsoons. You can do waterfall hopping any day here.

The Vibhuti Falls is simple yet pretty. There is something about the raw beauty and lush rather untouched landscape that I really like. What I really like is the 1-1.5 km hike…as I’m not the biggest fan of hiking but….then you mention Leeches and I got flash backs of scenes from a move called Stand By Me where the kid pulled a leech from out of his bathing trunks…eek

Christopher – you got the right word for this part of the world – raw beauty, mostly untouched by the man. This is something I miss when I travel to well-managed tourist locations. Leeches are not fun but they are not bad for humans.

Vibhuti Falls looks gorgeous. It reminds me a bit of El Yunque La Mina falls in Puerto Rico. I bet it takes a lifetime to see all the amazing nature of India. I learned about all these nature spots I’ve never heard of before. Makes me want to go to India more!

Jessica – that is the purpose of my blog – to tempt you to come to India 🙂

I love visiting such hidden gems. Vibhuti Falls, Yana Rocks, Caves & Rock Formations look a great place for adventure and nature lovers like me. While i had been to Gokarna, I completely missed visiting these spots. Next time!

Amazing. Such a detailed description Anuradha. I am yet to visit Karnataka but Vibhuti falls certainly look pretty. It has to be on my bucket list. Loved the entire write up. Thanks.

Glad you discovered Yana and Vibhuti Falls through IndiTales.

hello, it’s a nice place….. we are college students from Kerala. we would like to visit yana caves and vibhuti falls. could you please tell me the correct way from Gokarna om beach to both of it? is there is an entrance fee?

3. Moscow Kremlin

Moscow Kremlin

This famously fortified complex is remarkably home to five palaces and four cathedrals and is the historic, political and spiritual center of the city. The Kremlin serves as the residence for the country’s president. It has been used as a fort, and this fact is made clear by its sheer size. The Kremlin’s outer walls were built in the late 1400s.

Under Ivan III, better known as Ivan the Great, the Kremlin became the center of a unified Russian state, and was extensively remodeled. Three of the Kremlin’s cathedrals date to his reign that lasted from 1462-1505. The Deposition Church and the Palace of Facets were also constructed during this time. The Ivan the Great Bell Tower was built in 1508. It is the tallest tower at the Kremlin with a height of 266 feet (81 meters).

Joseph Stalin removed many of the relics from the tsarist regimes. However, the Tsar Bell, the world’s largest bell, and the Tsar Cannon, the largest bombard by caliber in the world, are among the remaining items from that era. The Kremlin Armory is one of Moscow’s oldest museums as it was established more than 200 years ago. Its diamond collection is impressive.

The Kremlin’s gardens – Taynitsky, Grand Kremlin Public and Alexander – are beautiful. The Kremlin has also served as the religious center of the country, and there is a tremendous number of preserved churches and cathedrals here. The collections contained within the museums include more than 60,000 historical, cultural and artistic monuments. Those who enjoy the performing arts will want to consider attending a ballet or concert at the State Kremlin Palace. Completed in 1961, it is the only modern building in the Kremlin.

It is here that many important moments in Russian history took place; the former marketplace has hosted everything from Tsar’s coronations and public ceremonies to rock concerts and Soviet military parades. Wandering around the massive square is a humbling experience and undoubtedly one of the highlights the city has to offer.

1. Saint Basil’s Cathedral

Saint Basil's Cathedral

Located in the impressive Red Square, St. Basil’s Cathedral is gorgeous; its delightful spires appear as if out of a fairytale. The most recognizable building in the country, the cathedral is very much a symbol of Russia. No visit to Moscow is complete without having taken in its unique and distinctive features.

Ivan the Terrible ordered the cathedral’s construction in the mid-16th century, and legend holds that Ivan put out the architect’s eyes so that he would be unable to build another cathedral more glorious than St. Basil’s. Designed to resemble the shape of a bonfire in full flame, the architecture is not only unique to the period in which it was built but to any subsequent period. For various reasons, both Napoleon and Stalin wanted to destroy the cathedral but fortunately did not succeed.

Known for its various colors, shapes and geometric patterns, St. Basil’s Cathedral houses nine different chapels that are all connected by a winding labyrinth of corridors and stairways. On the lower floor, St. Basil’s Chapel contains a silver casket bearing the body of St. Basil the Blessed.

Throughout the cathedral are many beautiful murals, frescoes, wooden icons and other art works and artifacts. Outside the cathedral is a lovely garden with the bronze Monument to Minin and Pozharsky, who rallied an all-volunteer Russian army against Polish invaders during a period of the late 16th century known as the Times of Troubles.

Kremlin

Moscow's most recognizable structure is without a doubt the Kremlin, a 15th-century fortified complex that covers an area of 275,000 square meters surrounded by walls built in the 1400s.

The Grand Kremlin Palace -which has over 700 rooms- was once home to the Tsar family and is now the official residence of the president of the Russian Federation, although most heads of state choose to reside elsewhere.

The massive complex also includes many other buildings, some of which are open to the public and can be visited regularly. Aside from three cathedrals (including one where the Tsars were once crowned) and a number of towers, the Kremlin is also home to the Armory building, a museum holding everything from the royal crown and imperial carriages to the ivory throne of Ivan the Terrible and Fabergé eggs.

Bolshoi Theatre

The Bolshoi Theater is home to the largest and one of the oldest ballet and opera companies in the world . While the theater has undergone several major renovations over the past century-including a recent one in 2011 to restore some of the imperial architectural details-it still retains all of its Neoclassical grandeur.

The Bolshoi Theater you see today opened in 1824, after several older versions burned down. Inside, red velvet, a three-tiered crystal chandelier, and gilt moldings give the place a Byzantine-Renassaince grandiose feel like no other.

Catching a show from the resident ballet and opera troupes is a treat, as the theater often presents a number of classic performances, such as Tchaikovsky's Mazeppa and Rachmaninoff's Francesca da Rimini, both of which originally premiered here.

GUM

Moscow's oldest and most upscale shopping center is an architectural marvel. GUM (short for Glávnyj Universálnyj Magazín or "Main Universal Store") was built in the late 1800s in neo-Russian style to showcase a beautiful mix of a steel skeleton and 20,000 panels of glass forming an arched roof.

This was a unique construction at the time, since the glass had to be strong enough to support the snow-heavy Russian winters. The building is just as impressive outside, with all three levels covered in marble and granite.

While GUM is no longer the largest shopping center in Moscow, it's still by far the most beautiful. Home to brands like Gucci and Manolo Blahnik, this might not be the ideal destination for most budget-conscious visitors, but the beauty of the building itself is worth a visit.

On the third floor, there are also great dining options, including a Soviet-style canteen that serves traditional Russian food, and a stand selling ice cream made by hand using an original 1954 recipe originally approved by the Soviet government.

Lenin's Mausoleum

Lenin's Mausoleum, the final resting place of Soviet leader Vladimir Lenin, occupies a central spot in Red Square. His body has been in the mausoleum since his death in 1924-and although the original plan was for him to be buried after a short period of public display for mourning, the plan quickly changed.

After over 100,000 visited the tomb over a period of six weeks, it was decided that a new sarcophagus and a more permanent display space could actually preserve Lenin's body for much longer than expected-and Lenin's Mausoleum was built.

Over the years, the mausoleum and its marble stairs also became the main spot from where Soviet leaders would watch parades and events happening in Red Square.

Lenin's embalmed body can still be seen today, lying down in a bulletproof glass sarcophagus as if he's sleeping. While a visit to the mausoleum is certainly unusual, it has become a must-do for history buffs looking to understand how Lenin's legacy truly changed the nation. Come ready to wait, though -there are usually lines to get in.

St. Basil's Cathedral on Red Square

All of Moscow's main streets start at Red Square, so it's easy to see why this is considered the heart of the city. A massive space of 330 meters by 70 meters, the square is flanked by the Kremlin, Lenin's Mausoleum, two cathedrals, and the State Historical Museum.

In 1945, a massive Victory Parade was held here to celebrate the defeat of Nazi Germany by the Soviet Armed Forces.

St. Basil's Cathedral , one of the most recognizable buildings on the square, was built in 1555. The unique cathedral has architectural details inspired by Byzantine and Asian design, as well as details that resemble those found in famous mosques. There are nine individual chapels inside the church, all decorated with colorful mural art.

Both the square itself and the Kremlin are recognized as UNESCO World Heritage Sites . On weekends, there are sometimes stalls selling souvenirs and traditional items here, such as matryoshka (Russian nesting dolls), at the entrance of the square.

Monument to the Conquerors of Space

At one point, Russia and the US were toe-to-toe when it came to space exploration. While that might no longer be the case, the museum's amazing collection-which includes over 85,000 items-is still awe-inspiring.

Main exhibits include the space capsule used by Yuri Gagarin , the first human to travel into outer space; a USSR flag with moon fragments; a Soviet spacesuit; and a rocket propulsion unit from the 1960s. A special two-story hall showcases sections of the Mir space station interior, and there are also models of the first sputniks and a replica miniature spaceship.

English-language tours are available, and there's also a Cinema Hall showing subtitled short films about the history of space exploration programs and the first manned space flight.

The museum is located inside the base of the monument to the Conquerors of Space, which was built almost 20 years before the museum opened.

Komsomolskaya Station on the Moscow metro

Riding the Moscow metro is an experience all in itself, but even just heading underground to walk through the stations is something no visitor should miss. With 223 stations and 12 metro lines crosscutting through Moscow, however, this can be tricky, so visiting at least a few of the most impressive ones is a good start.

Arbatskaya station was designed by a skyscraper architect, so it's no surprise that it features multicolored granite slabs and impressive bronze chandeliers.

Park Kultury station , located next to Gorky Park, is covered in marble and features reliefs of people involved in sports, while Teatralnaya station is decorated with porcelain figures dancing and wearing traditional Russian costumes.

The metro is open between 5:30am and 1:00am but it's very crowded in the early morning and after 4pm, so it's better to visit in the late morning or early afternoon to really appreciate the architecture without the crowds.

Kolomenskoye Estate

The Moscow State Integrated Art and Historical Architectural and Natural Landscape Museum-Reserve is a cultural open-air museum complex comprised of four different historical sites.

The most important site, the Kolomenskoye Estate, was once the summer residence of Tsars as far back as the 14 th century. The complex, which covers almost 300 hectares, is home to fairy-tale wooden palaces; a tent-roof stone church built in the 1500s; a water tower; fort towers and structures; and the 24-room Museum of Wooden Architecture , which includes the restored dining room of Tsar Alexei I.

Beautiful manicured gardens , riverside picnic areas, and a massive collection of both artifacts and structures make this a great destination to help you see what medieval Russia looked like. English-language tours are available, but you're also free to wander the grounds on your own.

Tretyakov Gallery

The largest collection of Russian art in the world sits here, with over 180,000 paintings, sculptures, and religious art dating back to over a millennia ago. The gallery, built using beautiful red and white colors from classical Russian architecture, is located near the Kremlin and it was built in the early 20 th century.

Significant art pieces include the Vladimir Mother of God; a Byzantine icon of the Virgin and child dating back to the 1100s; Andrei Rublev's The Trinity icon from the 15 th century; and several works by Ilya Repin, the most famous realist painter in Russia.

On the grounds of the museum, there is also an 86-meter-tall statue of Peter the Great, as well as a number of Socialist Realism sculptures.

Night view of Arbat Street decorated for the holidays

Moscow's one-kilometer-long pedestrian street has been around since the 15 th century. Originally a trade route in the outskirts of the city, Arbat Street is now very centrally located, home to posh buildings and lots of places to eat and shop.

Beautiful street lamps and two significant statues-one of Princess Turandot (from Puccini's last opera) and one of Soviet-era poet Bulat Okudzhava-adorn the street, which fills up with both locals and tourists on evenings and weekends.

A great place to pick up souvenirs or sit down at an outdoor café, Arbat Street also offers a chance to visit the former home of poet Alexander Pushkin and the café both Anton Chekhov and Leo Tolstoy used to visit.

VDNKh All-Russian Exhibition Centre and the Friendship of the Peoples Fountain

Although it was originally designed as a general-purpose trade show venue, this park complex now houses amusement rides , ice rinks , and a number of galleries and other attractions for all ages.

The park's most famous landmarks are the Moskvarium, a marine biology center home to over 8000 species of marine animals, the Garage Museum of Contemporary Art, and a shopping center selling traditional products from former Soviet countries.

There's even a film museum showing Soviet cartoons or even a full-length film (for an extra fee) and an education center offering masterclasses on everything from becoming a barista to video montage (call or write in advance to find out which ones are English-friendly).

Soviet-era pavilions, sculptures, and fountains abound here as well, including the famous Friendship of the Peoples Fountain, which features statues of women dressed in costumes from different former Soviet countries.

Main entrance gate to Gorky Park

Named after the famous Russian writer Maxim Gorky (who was nominated for the Nobel Prize in Literature five times but never won it) and sitting right across the Moskva River, Gorky Park covers 120 hectares of beautiful ponds and green spaces.

Popular with both locals and tourists, the park offers a variety of things to enjoy-from sunbeds, hammocks, and drinking fountains to free yoga classes and children's playgrounds. There's free Wi-Fi and sockets for charging your phone, as well as many food stands and plenty of wild animals, including deer, rabbits, and pheasants.

Visitors can rent paddle boats and bicycles to explore the park-and from May to October, there is also an open-air movie theater, as well as scheduled presentations by street performers, musicians, and artists. Gorky Park attracts the young and old, so don't be surprised to see a mix of people exercising, playing chess, and sunbathing.

Yana, a Russian exile in Paris: ‘Russia’s destiny is everyone’s business’

Arrested during a protest against the war in Ukraine in March 2022, Yana, a 35-year-old Russian executive, decided to flee her home town of Moscow. Since her arrival in Paris in June, she has been trying to deal with the administration involved in moving country, while sharing the message of critics of Vladimir Putin's regime.

Issued on: 20/02/2023 - 18:05

In the halls of Sciences Po, situated in the Saint-Germain-des-Prés neighbourhood, Yana is adapting to her new environment. "It is a great school, I'm lucky to be able to study here. They are used to foreigners; I even have a tutor who helps me with the administrative procedures. On the other hand, I'm going to have to get used to it in terms of language because my English is far from perfect," she says with a nervous laugh.

The young Russian  exiled in Paris began a masters programme in urban planning at the prestigious Parisian school with hopes that it would allow her to stabilise her uncertain situation in France.

Arrested for protesting

On March 6, 2022, two weeks after the beginning of Vladimir Putin 's "special operation", several protests against the war in Ukraine  took place across Russia . Yana decided to join one of the demonstrations on Komsomolskaya Square, in the centre of Moscow.

“I had already participated in several protests before, including after election results were released, without any problem. This time, the situation was completely different – police officers had cordoned off the district and there were more police than protesters. In my bag they found a stash of green ribbons, used by opponents as an anti-war symbol, and they took us all away."

Police arrested several thousand protesters across the country, including 1,700 in Moscow, according to the authorities. For Yana, that day marked the beginning of her problems.

Moscow to Paris, one way

"I was fined for participating in an illegal protest but most importantly, they added me to a facial recognition system," said the young woman. "It is a tool that allows the police to monitor the slightest moves of dissidents. Some are harassed or arrested for no reason. Russia is not a country that respects the rule of law, even less so since the beginning of the war. In the event of a problem with the police, there is no way to rectify the situation."

Yana got scared. As a large number of countries began to impose sanctions on Russia, she also worried about the health of her diabetic daughter, who takes insulin several times a day. She decided to leave the country. "I had French contacts in Russia who helped me apply for a visa. I chose France because we have family friends there. Luckily in a few months, I obtained a positive response from the embassy."

In June, Yana arrived in Paris with her 13-year-old daughter and her two cats. She temporarily settled with friends in Chantilly, in the Oise département (district), while she took the necessary steps.

Administrative ping-pong

In March 2022, the European Union adopted a measure to offer temporary protection to Ukrainians fleeing the war, granting them a status similar to that of refugees. While some countries like Germany facilitated the protection of the Russian opposition, France did not adopt similar measures.

"In Moscow I worked as an urban planning project manager. France granted my visa because of my qualifications. Paris is the ideal place for people like me who are passionate about planning. I imagined starting my own business but I quickly became disillusioned," said Yana.

When she tried to explain her situation to obtain a residence permit, the préfecture (administrative centre) directed her to an assistance centre for Ukrainians. "I was well received until they saw my passport. Suddenly nothing was possible," she said ironically.

>> Mardzhina, Ukrainian refugee: 'I planned to come to Paris but not to live there...'

Despite her circumstances, Yana never felt animosity toward the Ukrainian exiles, whom she feels close to and supports. After her arrival in Paris, she contacted the Sakharov Center, founded by the famous Russian human rights activist  Lev Ponomarev , which tries to unite dissident Russian voices in exile.

“Our priority is to do everything to stop the ongoing war. Of course, everyone’s eyes are on Ukraine and international aid is essential, but we must also think about Russia’s destiny. It is everyone's business. I know this is a difficult statement to spread, but how can we imagine a prosperous future for Ukraine, at the gates of a pariah state? Our role as Russian dissidents is to fight Putin's regime to clear the way for democracy. It's a long-term fight, but it's the only possible way."

Temporarily housed in a social hotel with her daughter, Yana is now waiting for an answer to obtain refugee status. She intends to stay in France while continuing her activism, convinced that "another Russia" is possible.

Ukraine-Russia war latest: French instructors in Ukraine would be 'legitimate target', Lavrov says on visit to West Africa

Sergei Lavrov, the Russian foreign minister, is on a tour in West Africa as part of a diplomatic push by the isolated Kremlin to forge new ties around the world. Meanwhile, an upcoming summit on Ukraine will reportedly aim to create a pathway for Russian officials to join future talks.

Wednesday 5 June 2024 19:00, UK

We're pausing our coverage for today but we will be back tomorrow with more updates.

Here is a rundown of the key developments today:

  • Ukraine has used American weapons to strike inside Russia, according to an unnamed Western source;
  • Joe Biden will hold talks with Volodymyr Zelenskyy in Normandy this week during his visit celebrating the 80th anniversary of D-Day;
  • Russian foreign minister Sergei Lavrov has been visiting countries in Africa as part of an ongoing diplomatic offensive from the Kremlin;
  • A former British defence attache has warned Russia's disinformation campaigns are "only going to get worse" as EU parliament elections and the Olympics approach.

You can scroll back through the blog to read all our updates from today.

A 26-year-old man of dual Ukrainian-Russian nationality has been arrested in possession of explosives after some of them detonated in a hotel room north of Paris.

The man was treated by fire-fighters after he "suffered significant burns following an explosion," on Monday, according to a source.

A source at the French anti-terror prosecutor's office said they had taken charge of the case and opened an investigation on suspicion of a terrorist conspiracy.

A subsequent search of his room led to the discovery of products and materials intended for the manufacture of explosive devices, the source added.

France's domestic spy agency DGSI is handling the investigation, Reuters reports.

Ukraine has used American weapons to strike inside Russia in recent days, according to a Western official.

The weapons were used under recently approved guidance from Joe Biden, allowing US arms to be used to strike inside Russia in defence of Kharkiv, Ukraine's second city.

The official spoke to Reuters on condition of anonymity.

Mr Biden's directive allows for US-supplied weapons to be used to strike Russian forces that are attacking or preparing to attack.

It does not change US policy that directs Ukraine not to use American-provided tactical or long-range missiles and other munitions to make offensive strikes inside Russia, US officials said.

Ukrainian officials had stepped up calls on the US to allow Kyiv's forces to defend themselves against attacks originating from Russian territory.

Kharkiv is 12 miles from the Russian border and has recently come under intensified Russian attack.

Volodymyr Zelenskyy has arrived in Qatar for talks with the state's emir, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani.

The Ukrainian president said on X that he planned to discuss Qatar's participation in a process of returning Ukrainian children abducted by Russia, as well as bilateral economic and security issues.

In March, Ukraine and Russia exchanged six children via Qatari mediation.

Earlier this week, Mr Zelenskyy made a surprise trip to the Philippines to thank the country for agreeing to participate in the upcoming peace summit being held in Switzerland.

A Russian-American man has been sentenced by a St Petersburg court to three-and-a-half years in prison on charges of "rehabilitating Nazism".

Yuri Malev was arrested in December over social media posts in which he was alleged to have denigrated the Saint George's ribbon, a Russian military symbol of valour.

One post reportedly contained "obscene language" and another other showed a picture of a corpse wearing the ribbon, captioned: "How to wear the Saint George's ribbon correctly".

The court in St Petersburg said this showed disrespect for society and insulted the memory of the Great Patriotic War (the Russian name for the Second World War).

Malev admitted guilt, according to the court.

He was a graduate of the law faculty of St Petersburg University and had lived in the United States since 1991, according to independent Russian language media.

Baza, a Telegram channel with links to Russian authorities, said Malev was a resident of Brooklyn, New York.

He reportedly entered Russia by bus from Estonia two weeks before he was arrested.

Moscow routinely refers to the government in Kyiv as a "Nazi regime", despite Volodymyr Zelenskyy being Jewish.

Ukraine has been allowed to shoot down Moscow's planes over Russian territory with American weapons since the war broke out, the White House has clarified.

Ukraine "can shoot down Russian aeroplanes that pose an impending threat", national security spokesman John Kirby said.

"And they have. They have since the beginning of the war."

The clarification was given due to confusion over Washington’s recent decision to relax rules on US-supplied weapons striking military targets on Russian soil.

Joe Biden gave authorisation for the strikes on a limited basis to help Kyiv defend itself against Kremlin forces advances towards Kharkiv.

Mr Kirby said he could not confirm reports that Ukraine had used US-supplied weapons on Russian territory for the first time.

He told reporters: "We're just not in a position on a day-to-day basis of knowing exactly what the Ukrainians are firing at what.

"It's certainly at a tactical level. So, I can't confirm that. I can tell you that they understand the guidance that they've been given."

By Ivor Bennett, Moscow correspondent

Sergei Lavrov's trip to Africa is part of an ongoing diplomatic offensive by the Kremlin, running in parallel to its conflict in Ukraine.

Isolated from the West, Russia is trying to forge new ties and has found fertile ground in Africa.

There have been several coups in recent years that have ushered in anti-Western military juntas.

US troops were kicked out of Niger, for example, while the French had to leave Burkina Faso.

In both cases, Moscow was quick to move in as the new security guarantors, and their efforts clearly don't stop there.

This is the veteran foreign minister Lavrov's ninth visit to the continent since Russia invaded Ukraine.

Kenya, Burundi and South Africa were among his stops last year; this week it's Guinea, Congo and Burkina Faso.

In return for military support, Russia gains an ally - they may not support the war, but they won't criticise it either.

The Kremlin portrays this as the formation of a new world order, free from Western imperialism and hegemony.

But others say Russia are the neo-colonialists, painting this as a blatant attempt to expand their sphere of influence.

Ukraine's first deputy foreign minister has held talks with his Chinese counterpart in an effort to increase cooperation between the two countries, the Ukrainian ministry said.

Ukraine's Andriy Sybiha also told Chinese Vice Foreign Minister Sun Weidong that he hoped China would participate in a Ukraine-led peace summit later in June.

Mr Sybiha added that it could be "a good opportunity to make a practical contribution to achieving a just and lasting peace", the Ukrainian foreign ministry said.

A report earlier today (see 7.40am post) said that June's peace summit opened doors to "limited talks with Russia" - despite Russian officials not being invited.

Earlier we brought you news that Ukraine said it had shot down 22 of the 27 Shahed-type drones launched by Russia overnight (see 8.04am post).

Now photographs have emerged of the aftermath of one of the strikes.

Firefighters work to put out the massive blaze in the Poltava region.

As Russia opens a new front on Ukraine's northeastern border, the war has entered an important phase.

Readers have been sending in their questions to our senior correspondents and military experts for their take on the changing battlefield environment.

Today, Trevor Prew asks:

Are there any signs of an underground Russian resistance operating inside Russia, or can Russians openly criticize Putin, as long as they don't protest on the streets or mention the war.

Russia correspondent Ivor Bennett says:

In a word, no.

There wasn't much opposition to speak of in Russia even before the war, but now there's nothing left whatsoever.

All of Putin's political opponents are either exiled, jailed or dead, as are those with any connections to Alexei Navalny.

Those who dare to speak out are silenced.

At one end, are the long-time critics and opposition activists, like Vladimir Kara-Murza, the dual Russian-British national opposition who is serving a 25-year prison sentence for treason.

But at the other end are ordinary Russians, like the former schoolteacher Nikita Tushkanov sentenced to 5.5 years for comments he made online about Putin.

The crackdown on dissent seemingly knows no bounds and it's created a climate in which those who oppose the war are terrified to speak out.

They do exist - as evidenced by the huge turnout for Navalny's funeral. But that was a unique moment and is unlikely to be repeated anytime soon.
