Always wanted to visit Mount Fuji when visiting Japan. Unfortunately, the weather was not great when we go there so we only got to see the mountain for a couple of hours. Very happy with the accommodation that was provided. The breakfast was decent, but to be honest, we have not had an amazing breakfast the whole time we were in Japan. That being said the food is amazing for lunch and dinner :-) We got an all-access pass to visit the sites which were super convenient. We were in and out of Hakone coming from Tokyo, so if you are pressed for time definitely recommend this.

Much improved. I have been to Japan twice now both times with Discovi and this was by far the best trip I could have imagined. There are new guides all local Japanese every single one of them is amazing (Shinya was exceptional!) and a brand new Hotel not a hostal like before but even the hostal option is better this time. But the hotel has breakfast and it was AMAZING a mix of Japanese and American food. Great start to the day. And the PUB CRAWL!! Crazy night so much fun, thanks Discovi!

I expected this to be more touristy but I WAS SO SHOCKED This is a local tour! I felt like we had the nicest guides all Japanese and they knew so many little spots that you would never find yourself! Take this tour if you want to see the real Japan

My husband and I went on the World Expiditions Back Roads of Japan Tour last year, and were extremely disappointed in the quality of guide provided. The guide had never done the tour, had never even been to half the places on the itinerary and was a complete loose cannon, on two occasions taking elicit drugs and drinking to the point of being unable to function. When the entire tour group sent complaints following the completion of the tour, World Expeditions were elusive and largely uncommunicative, and offered us all an insulting refund of about 12% of our tour cost. Needless to say, we will not be taking or recommending World Expeditions tours in the future.

This was our first trip with World Expeditions and also our first trip to Japan. We were very surprised that upon our arrival our (non Japanese) guide announced that he had not done this trip before - or ever lead a group of this size (12)! Although we were a seasoned group of travelers, most had never been to Japan. General disappointment with our guide was evident but we decided to push on. Most places we stayed were great and we really loved the Japanese culture and people we experienced. It would have been an incredible trip if we had a local guide that knew the culture and history. Our guide not only had different trip notes to us, but he had to use google to find his way around and answer most of our questions. His interest in the local Yakuza (Mafia) was outstanding, as were his drug addiction which became apparent much later in the tour. If it were not for the experience of our group, disaster & mishap could have occurred on several occasions. Upon our return we complained to World Expeditions in detail, but it seemed of little concern to them. We were given a 12% refund and told that the guide had been sacked. We will definitely return to Japan, but unfortunately would not recommend World Expeditions to anyone. We will certainly never travel with them again!

A good tour. I understand that using public transport is part of the experience but on occasion I think it would have been more efficient to use a coach

As extensive correspondence with the tour company has stated we felt that the tour offered VERY poor value for money. The high cost was not reflected in the standard of accomodation, all entrance fees were excluded and there were very few meals included. The tour company's response was that they had high overheads reflecting back of house expenses eg training, quality control etc Also they failed to pick up at the incoming airport as promised, stating we were ''coming in early' despite the fact that flight arrangement were always the customers ' responsibility. The guide was quite good but we would never use this company again. Feel ripped offf.

The famous and popular mountain of Mt. Fuji is known for being the highest in Japan's country. It is often visited by citizens and foreign visitors. The lakes surrounding Mt. Fuji are called the Fuji-Five Lakes, they a part of the Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park as well as Mt. Fuji. Mount Fuji is 3776 meters high, which makes it the tallest mountain in Japan. The perfectly shaped mountain is also an active volcano that last erupted in 1708. Because of its majestic appearance it has been worshipped and considered a sacred deity that ascetic monks revered. The snowcapped visage of Mount Fuji has been iconic in many artistic outlets and is now known as one of the symbols of Japan. On a clear day you can ride the Shinkansen (bullet train) from Tokyo to Osaka and see the mountain in the distance. If you wish to see the mountain from another angle then you can enjoy the view from the Fuji Five Lakes (Fujigoko), which are located at the base. Mount Fuji is one of the Three Holy Mountains in Japan along with Mount Tate and Mount Haku. In 2003 it was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site. When hiking season begins at Mount Fuji it becomes very popular for climbers to reach the top before the sunrise. There are trails made for people to follow and the travel time varies depending on the station you depart from. Also visibility of Mount Fuji tends to be better in the early morning and late evening. The 5th station is usually the highest and most accessible spot that visitors can travel to during good and safe weather. One of the 5th station starting points begins at around 2400 meters (around 7874 feet) in altitude. There are various stores, and souvenir shops, as well as occasional shrines that are established at the stations. The rest areas alone hold tranquil sceneries of the mountainside, even when there are foggy days the wind can be heard sweeping past the trees around the stations. Mt. Ms. Miharu was great and also our bus driver (bus #81) for driving us to our destinations safe everyday. Miharu is very knowledgeable and comical, we really enjoyed her company and knowledge.

I cannot rave enough about this tour. Miharu and Joyce (subbed for 2 days) were our top notch hard working guides. I appreciate the history and interesting side stories were communicated on the bus, so at most locations we were able to explore on our own. The hotels, meals and coach were very comfortable & enjoyable. Everything was ready and prepared when the group arrived. The itinerary is well paced and full so you get your money's worth. The sushi making, Ninja throwing and Maiko tea ceremony & performance were so much fun and a compliment to just sight seeing. This was a very memorable trip with a great group of fellow travelers. What to know when booking a bus tour to Mt. Fuji

Tour hours are approximate.

Note that the tour hours and tour schedule are approximate since the weather and road traffic can affect the tour schedule. 

Road traffic to and from Mount Fuji, especially during public holidays, can be very busy. 

A day trip to Mt. Fuji can be a long and tiring day. 2 tours therefore provide the option to return with the Shinkansen at the end of the excursion. This may get you back to your hotel 2 hours faster.

The tours where you can book the bullet train are: Tour 1 (only on weekends and public holidays from April to November) and Tour 2

1. Mount Fuji and Hakone Tour with Sightseeing Cruise

This Mount Fuji tour includes a scenic cruise at Lake Ashi, the must-do ropeway to Owakudani Valley, the iconic floating torii gate at Hakone Shrine, and a visit to Fuji Subaru Line 5th station.

Along the way, you get the chance to taste the famous Kuro Tamago black eggs that are boiled in the hot volcanic spring water in the Owakudani Valey.

The tour starts and ends in Shinjuku except during weekends and holidays from April to November when the bus will drop you off at Odowara station at the end of the tour. On these days you can purchase a bullet train ticket with the tour. If you have a JR pass (national or JR-east) there’s no need to pay extra, you can use these passes on the trains between Odawara & Tokyo. (the Shinkansen is only covered by the national pass)

2. Mount Fuji and Hakone 1 Day Tour with optional return by bullet train

This 11-hour tour found on Viator will take you to Mount Fuji highlights such as Mount Fuji Subaru Line 5th Station , Lake Ashi, and the Hakone Ropeway. All places from where you can enjoy beautiful views of Mount Fuji.

At the end of the tour, you have the possibility to be dropped off at Odawara station where you can board the Shinkansen which will take you back to Shinjuku station in just 40 minutes.

A great opportunity to experience the famous bullet train. If you don’t want to ride the bullet train you can also just return by coach.

Points of interest around the Mt. Fuji area

To help you make your choice, we have a little more information about the different points of interest that are included in these tours.

Mt. Fuji 5th station

A Mt. Fuji 5th station is as close to Mt. Fuji as you can get without climbing the mountain.  There are four different so-called 5th stations.  These stations contain shops where those who will climb to the top can buy their supplies.

The stations are excellent places for beautiful views of Mount Fuji, the Japanese Alps, and the greater Fifth Lake area. 

The Mount Fuji Subaru Line 5th station is the most accessible of the 4 stations and therefore most tours will make a stop here.

Keep in mind that visiting a Mount Fuji 5th station is not always possible. The roads are closed in winter and outside that period the road may also be closed at short notice because of heavy snowfall or rain. In those cases, the itineraries of these tours will be changed.

Kawaguchiko Lake 

Lake Kawaguchiko is the largest of the 5 Mt. Fuji lakes. 

Weather permitting, it’s a great place to catch amazing views of Mt. Fuji.

Besides splendid views of Mount Fuji, it offers plenty of other great activities such as onsen, museums, cable cars, hiking trails, an amusement park, and much more.

Arakura Sengen Shrine and Chureito Pagoda

The Chureito Pagoda is part of the Arakura Sengen Shrine.

This is an iconic Mount Fuji viewing spot. We took this picture in February, if you visit the shrine a few weeks later, during the Sakura season, the view is even more beautiful.

A stop at this famous shrine is included in tour 3 and tour 8 .

Oshino Hakkai Village

Oshino Hakkai is recognized as a world cultural heritage site since 2013.

It is famous for its eight sacred ponds with crystal water.

Here you can also find Hannoki Bayashi Shiryokan, an open-air museum  that showcases old traditional farmhouses along with traditional farming tools, samurai armors, and various weapons from that time.  

The traditional houses, with the perfectly shaped volcano in the background, make for a perfect picture that could have been made in the old days of Japan.

Oshino Shinobi no Sato

Oshino Shinobi no Sato also called the Ninja Village, is a place where you can rent Ninja costumes, watch a Ninja show and solve the mystery of the Karakuri house which is full of traps and secret doors. 

From the garden, you can enjoy great views of Mt. Fuji. 

It’s a great place to visit if you are traveling with children.

Saiko Iyashi no Sato Nemba

This is an open-air museum on the Western shores of Lake Saiko.

Take a stroll through the village and marvel at the houses with thatched roofs which will give you a glimpse into life in Japan in the olden days.

Here you can also participate in craft workshops and rent Japanese costumes to take a picture. 

It is visited with tour 8 .

Hakone is a lush green and picturesque region not too far from Mt. Fuji. It is renowned for its stunning natural landscapes and hot springs, and even more so for the views of iconic Mount Fuji. 

Below are the activities that these tours do in the Hakone region.

Lake Ashi is a peaceful lake surrounded by mountains. It’s a busy destination in Hakone as it is part of the Hakone Loop , a popular loop that takes you past many of Hakone’s highlights.

Lake Ashi is a great place for hiking. Trails follow the shoreline or lead to viewpoints up into the mountains.

Another popular activity is a cruise. If weather permits the cruise will offer good views of Mt. Fuji.

Hakone ropeway

On a clear day, you’ll be able to spot a scenic view of Mount Fuji as you ride the ropeway. In addition, the cable car also offers a beautiful view of the volcanic Owakudani valley.

Owakudani Valley, also known as “Hell Valley”, is an amazing place. It is one of the few places in the region where you can see the volcanic activity so clearly.

You smell the sulfur smell and see the boiling mud pools.

You can also eat black eggs here, eggs that were boiled in the mud puddles. Eating 1 egg would give you 7 extra years of life. At least that’s how the myth goes…

A visit to the valley is included in tour 1 , tour 2, tour 6 and tour 7 .

Gotemba Premium Outlets

The Gotemba Premium Outlets is one of the largest outlets in Japan where you can find most of the US and European premium brands such as Hugo Boss, Gap, Prada, Ralph Lauren, Godiva chocolates, etc.

Most of the stores are tax-free for tourists. So don’t forget to take your passport and show it to the cashier when you pay.

It’s a great place to combine bargain hunting with taking pictures of Mount Fuji.

Komagatake Ropeway

The Komagatake Ropeway starts at the shore of Lake Ashi and leads to the peak of Mt. Komagatake, at 1.356 meters one of the tallest peaks in the area.

On a clear day, you can enjoy beautiful views of Lake Ashi and Mount Fuji from the observation platform at the top station.

You can also visit the Mototsumiya Shrine. The “shrine in the sky” is at the very top of the mountain, only a short walk from the top station of the gondola.

The Komagatake ropeway is included in  tour 6 .

Mishima Skywalk

The Mishima Skywalk is the longest pedestrian suspension bridge in Japan. It is 400 meters long and thanks to its spectacular location it offers breathtaking views on both Mt. Fuji and Suruga Bay.

“ Great day out with a great guide! ”

We took a car in from Tokyo to meet up with Moto for a trip to Aokigahara Forest and some views of Fuji. This was my first time using this site and I was a little hesitant at first, but after a few back and forth e-mails I was feeling more comfortable. We met Moto at the train station and started our journey. On the way to our first stop, the Wind Cave in Aokigahara Moto noticed that there was a good view forming of Mt Fuji. He turned around into a viewing spot and we ended up having the best picture and view of Fuji of the whole day. We continued on to the Wind Cave and Ice Cave which were very cool (pun intended). We love caves and these were pretty awesome. We did take about a 20 min walk through the forest to get from one cave to the other which was plenty to get the feel of it that we were looking for. So isolated feeling and quiet. After the caves we went to a couple more viewing spots by the lakes and then stopped for a nice lunch. Then on to the top of the Hill to see the Chureito Pagoda. This is the Pagoda where you can get a great picture with Mt Fuji in the background. We couldn't see as much of Mt Fuji as we did in the morning but enough. To end the trip we made a stop at a nice little Sake Brewery, Ide-Jozoten. It had been cloudy for a couple of days and raining at the start of our day going there. We had no expectations of seeing Mt Fuji, but we did! Moto was so concerned about making sure we had views of Fuji and wanted everything to be great for us. He did a fantastic job showing us around and the stops that he picked were great. Couldn't have asked for a better day out or a better guide. Thank you Moto san!

Climb the mountain at a pace that even beginners can aim to reach the summit

Our tour is designed in way that even beginners can reach the summit. The tour will proceed at a slow pace and take moderate breaks. The goal is to get to the top without overdoing it therefore even people who are not confident about their stamina can climb safely.

Mountain hut stay

A one-night stay at a mountain hut is included. Hiking from 7th and 8th station is the most difficult and hardest point. Since you will stay at Tomoekan located at original 8th station, you can hike there during daytime and take a rest before summit attack.

This is a compilation of frequently asked questions about the Mt. Fuji Climbing Tour. Please check if your question has been addressed.

Climbing gear is quite expensive. Would it be OK to substitute it for cheaper rainwear and/or shoes?

During the Mount Fuji climbing tour, the temperatures ranges from the hotness of midsummer to the coldness of midwinter; and you will experience unstable weather conditions such as sudden rain and strong winds, even if the weather appears clear at the beginning. To prepare items that have been especially made for mountain climbing, made of materials such as Gore-Tex is recommendable due to their functionality and durability. There are suitable items at general stores, however, if it is difficult to decide what to buy, a specialized shop may offer ones. Also, a professional gear rental plan is available at Willer Travel’s Mount Fuji Climbing Tour (An advanced booking has to be made.)

Can one person only sign up for the trip, or does it have to be a group?

You are more than welcome to join the tour by yourself, there are many participants doing so. However, the private room guaranteed plan is limited to groups of 2 people. Single participants cannot apply.

Can I join the tour from the 5th station of Mt. Fuji?

No, you can not join the tour from anywhere other than Shinjuku. Please be sure to board the bus from the assembly point. If you don't take the bus from Shinjuku, you will be considered not to participate in the tour.

Where can I choose the gear size? And can I change the size after reservation?

After selecting the number of participants on the reservation screen, you will see the schedule confirmation. There, please select the size of climbing boots and rainwear for each participant. *You can change the size at the rental store on the day of the tour.

What should I be careful of when climbing Mount Fuji?

Mount Fuji, the highest mountain in Japan, is 3,776m high. Therefore, it would be difficult to get to the summit if you do not plan for climbing or keeping an appropriate pace. Also, you may get altitude sickness at worst. In addition, there are many climbers during Mount Fuji climbing season. Follow the climbing guidelines for all other climbers. Please refer to "About climbing Mount Fuji" to learn climbing information and guidelines.

Will the same bus be used for both ways? Can we leave our luggage in the bus or are there any coin lockers?

The vehicle or bus company may not be the same for both trips. Any luggage cannot be left inside the bus. Please use the coin lockers (large: 600 yen / small: 300 yen) at Fujikyu Unjokaku at the 5th station for any unnecessary luggage. There may be cases where all the lockers are in use in the peak season.

Is it possible to watch the sunrise from the summit?

On this tour, you will watch the sunrise from the 9th station instead of the summit. Please note that you cannot leave the group to reach the summit. Every year, many climbers aim for the summit during sunrise, and the summit is extremely crowded. In consideration of safety first, this tour plans to watch the sunrise from the 9th station. Please be assured that you can watch a sufficiently wonderful sunrise from the 9th station. *Please note that you may not be able to watch the sunrise depending on the weather.

How much money should I bring?

About 5,000 yen is enough on the mountain. Prepare a lot of coins instead of bills. Toilets at Mount Fuji requires money payment. Since you need a 100 yen coin to use one, plenty of these coins should be brought. In addition, Food and drink at the stations are rather expensive due to shipping charges. Extra cash should be prepared. (Sample expenses) Pay toilets: 1,200-1,500 yen（200-300 yen/1 time） Bottled water: 500-1,000 yen（400-500 yen/1 bottle） *other expenses such as souvenirs, offerings and brands for walking sticks are not included.

Do I need to take anti-sunburn precautions?

UV rays are so strong on the mountain that taking measures to avoid sunburns is necessary. Sunscreen and sunglasses are must items. Sunscreen will run off from sweat even after being put on once. Put it on again frequently. Sunglasses are not just for blocking out blinding light, but also absorb the UV rays to prevent the darkening of corneas since melanin pigments make skin get a tan after corneas absorb the UV rays. Sunglasses that fully cover the eyes are recommended.

How much water should I bring?

Bring a liter when start the climb. Refills are purchasable from the mountain huts. Two or three liters are required for one climb (two days with an overnight stay). Carrying all in a rucksack is a heavy burden therefore prepare the first liter and purchase one at the mountain huts on the way to the summit. Be careful for dehydration leads to altitude sickness.

Can I join the tour with a child?

Children 6 years old and over who can communicate in English can join the tour. Please select an adult when making a reservation since the tour fee is the same for adults and children.

Mount Fuji climb will cost more through military rec programs thanks to new local hiking fee

Climbing Mount Fuji on a trip sponsored by a U.S. military base will cost more this year as Japan seeks to offset the impact of thousands of visitors to the iconic volcano.

Yamanashi prefecture this summer is charging a new, 2,000-yen hiking fee, or $12.46, a prefectural spokesman told Stars and Stripes by phone Tuesday.

“The money will go to any fee needed to regulate visitors, as well as for safety measures,” the spokesman said.

The prefecture also installed a gate, a crowd-control measure, at the Yoshida Trail at the mountain’s 5th Station, where tour buses park and many hikers begin their trek to the 12,390-foot summit.

About 60% of all Mount Fuji climbers take the Yoshida Trail, according to a Japan Times report May 4. No fee is charged at the Subashiri, Gotemba or Fujinomiya trails on the Shizuouka prefecture side of the mountain.

Climbing season begins Monday in Yamanashi and July 10 in Shizuoka and ends in early September.

Along with the new fee, Yamanashi prefecture will limit the number of hikers on the Yoshida Trail to 4,000 daily and close the 5th Station gate from 4 p.m. to 3 a.m., except for individuals with mountain hut reservations getting to the mountain late, the spokesman said.

“The regulation aims to prevent exceeding congestion near the summit and prevent so-called ‘bullet climbing,’ ” the spokesman said. Bullet climbers ascend Fuji at night, catch sunrise at the summit and descend without taking a rest.

The spokesman said visitors may make reservations online through the prefecture’s website for the Yoshida gate. Hikers without reservations may pass through the gate until the number reaches 4,000.

Government spokespeople in Japan are often required to speak to the media only on condition of anonymity.

Local authorities have voiced concern over overcrowding trails on Mount Fuji, the spokesman said. A falling climber could cause domino toppling and lead to a major accident, he said.

Thousands of people of all ages safely ascend the mountain every day, but the journey is not without risk. Authorities found the bodies of three missing climbers inside the crater atop Mount Fuji on Wednesday, according to a report Thursday in Japan Today.

The same day, a professional climber in his 50s, Keita Kurakami, lost consciousness around 10,000 feet on the Yoshida Trail and later died in a local hospital, according to the report.

Groups with outdoor recreation programs at bases in the Tokyo area typically hike the Yoshida Trail to the summit, Yoshimasa Nakamura, recreation specialist at Yokota Air Base, told Stars and Stripes on Tuesday.

Yokota Outdoor Recreation is adding $20 to its Mount Fuji day hikes, for a total $90, Nakamura said. There is no change to the number of hikers the trip can accommodate, he said.

The next trip from Yokosuka Naval Base to Mount Fuji is July 13, with room on the bus for 32 hikers, Hiroyuki Yoneda, a recreation aide with Morale, Welfare and Recreation, told Stars and Stripes by phone Tuesday.

The trip with the extra fee costs $87 dollars, which has not deterred customers from signing up, Yoneda said.

At Camp Zama, the outdoor recreation program is not adding the hiker’s fee to its trips or reducing its planned hikes, but hikers must pay the additional 2,000 yen on their own at the trailhead, Miho Overly, program assistant at Zama’s MWR program told Stars and Stripes by phone Tuesday.

At Yokota, Nakamura said he hopes the added cost will not deter people from hiking Mount Fuji. As a guide at Yokota, Nakamura has climbed the mountain more than 100 times, with as many as 30 hikers at once.

“I like the feeling of reaching the summit,” he said. “When all the fatigue is gone, you’re at the top and you have the feeling of comfort.”

At least four people have been found dead on Japan 's Mount Fuji , prompting a warning against scaling the mountain before the climbing season.

Three people were found in a state of cardiac arrest inside a crater on the summit of the mountain while a fourth died after collapsing on the north side.

One of the bodies from the crater has been brought down, police said on Thursday. Attempts to bring back the other bodies will continue on Friday or later, depending on weather conditions.

The bodies were found after police responded to a call on Sunday morning from a Tokyo resident who lost contact with her 53-year-old husband after he went to climb the mountain.

Law enforcement officials searching for the man found three people in a state of cardiac arrest near the south side of the peak, NHK World reported. They are believed to have climbed from the side of Shizuoka Prefecture.

Professional climber Keita Kurakami, 38, died in hospital after being found by police on the Yamanashi Prefecture side of the mountain.

The three trails to the summit from Shizuoka and one from Yamanashi are scheduled to open in July, when it is safe to climb the 12,388ft mountain. But people have already started going up, disregarding warnings from the Japanese authorities.

Experts warn that it can get extremely cold, even in the summer, and proper gear, climbing boots and clothing are crucial. Trekkers are also at risk of altitude sickness if they ascend too quickly.

"Mount Fuji in winter is classified as one of the toughest mountains for winter climbing in Japan," Takekawa Shunji, a mountain guide, told the Japanese broadcaster.

"Conditions are so severe that people with just some experience with ordinary mountains in winter can't deal with it. It still has some snow in June, so a climber must know that conditions won't be different to those of winter."

The picturesque Fuji has long been a famous symbol of Japan , with its gracefully sweeping slopes and white icy cap standing out above tranquil lakes and rice fields.

As many as 300,000 people climb it every year, and watching the sunrise from the mountaintop is coveted as a spiritual experience. But worries have been growing lately about overcrowding by tourists.

In March, Japan announced entry fees of ¥2,000 (£10) per head for people climbing the volcano to tackle overcrowding. A gate is set to be installed at the entrance to the Yoshida Trail, also called the fifth station, on the Yamanashi side of Fuji, standing at 3,776m.

For the 2024 season, which runs up until mid-September, the newly installed gate will operate for limited hours, closing at 4pm and reopening at 3am the next day.

The town of Fujikawaguchiko in Yamanashi recently erected a large black screen along a pavement to block the view of Mount Fuji to discourage photo-taking crowds.
