Review + Photos: REO Speedwagon and Rick Springfield Deliver Big Hits at Tour Kickoff

Last night at the Pennsylvania, classic rock heavyweights REO Speedwagon and 80s icon Rick Springfield kicked off their 2024 tour at the Santander Arena. The co-headlining run is a barrage of classic rock hits that make the audience feel like they’re throwing quarters into a jukebox. Check out our review of the show, and full live photo galleries below.

Springfield took the stage first. The singer and guitarist is much more than that; a bona fide pop culture icon. When the lights went down, a video played across the massive LED screed in the background showcasing Springfield’s wild career. From massive music hits to on-screen acting gigs, Rick’s done it all. One clip in particular was from the hit Showtime series, Californication , where Peter Gallagher’s character exclaims, “Is that Rick Springfield?” Damn right it is.

Rick took the stage and kicked things off with “Affair of the Heart.” From their, he proceeded to put together a 12-song set with material from eight of his albums. Throughout the set, Springfield teased his signature track, “Jessie’s Girl,” but continued to fake out the capacity crowd. He did a great job of keeping the fans occupied, though, distracting them with other hits like “I’ve Done Everything for You,” “Don’t Talk to Strangers,” “Love Somebody,” and more. After the latter track, a shirtless Springfield returned to the stage to crank out “Jessie’s Girl” in full. It’s hard to believe that the guy is 74-years old. Springfield looked great and sounded great, giving an energetic performance and proving that he’s still a heartthrob all these generations later.

Icon of the 1980s Rick Springfield still tours relentlessly. The GRAMMY® Award-winning singer has sold over 20 million albums and has served as a great example of longevity in music. Two of his classic albums – 1981’s  Working Class Dog  and 1982’s  Success Hasn’t Spoiled Me Yet  – both landed in the Top 10 on the Billboard 200.

In addition to his music career, Springfield is also an accomplished actor. He had a starring role in the 1984 film,  Hard to Hold . He’s also appeared alongside Meryl Streep in 2015’s  Ricki and the Flash . On television, Rick starred in the long-running soap opera  General Hospital  from 1981 to 1983 as Dr. Noah Drake. He reprised the role from 2005 through 2008, and again in 2012. He starred in the series  High Tide  from 1994 to 1997, and has had roles in  Hot in Cleveland ,  Supernatural ,  American Horror Story , and HBO’s  True Detective .

In 2009, Springfield guest-starred in Season 3 of Showtime’s hit show,  Californication , playing a raunchy, stereotypical rockstar version of himself.

REO Speedwagon are certified classic rock juggernauts, and that is evident every time they perform. Lit up like the sun, the band strolled onto the stage and launched into “Don’t Let Him Go” from their 1981 watershed album,  Hi Infidelity . From there, was a barrage of hits including “Take It On the Run,” Keep Pushin’,” “Can’t Fight This Feeling,” “Time For Me to Fly,” and many more. The capacity crowd was on their feet the entire time, singing along with every word. It was an incredible testament to the band’s staying power, and the strength of their catalog.

They wrapped things up with the 1973 fan favorite, “Ridin’ the Storm Out.” The show was far from over, though, as REO returned for an epic two-track encore. Saving arguably the best for last, they churned out mega-hits “Keep On Loving You” and “Roll With the Changes,” which features some of the evening’s dazzling guitar work. The song is perhaps the most underrated arena rock anthem of all time, and unmistakably the band’s finest moment.

Last January, founding keyboardist Neal Doughty announced his retirement from touring with the band after five decades. Longtime frontman Kevin Cronin remains, alongside bassist Bruce Hall, who joined the band in 1977. When Doughty confirmed his retirement from the road, Hall said that he would always be a member of the REO Speedwagon brotherhood, and that the door for him to play with the band again would always be open.

Cronin and Hall tour with guitarist Dave Amato, who joined the group in 1989, and drummer Brian Hitt, who came aboard in 1990.

REO Speedwagon are taking the stage at The Venetian Theatre inside The Venetian® Resort Las Vegas for six nights later this year. The “An Evening of Hi Infidelity…and More” residency will see the storied group perform their entire landmark LP,  Hi Infidelity , from beginning to end, along with a second set of hits and fan favorites.

REO Speedwagon’s last album was 2007’s  Find Your Way Home . The band’s fifteenth studio effort, it featured the Billboard-charting single, “I Need to Fall.” The record was released through the band’s own label, Speedwagon Recordings. Throughout their, REO Speedwagon have sold over 40 million records worldwide. They’ve released 13 Top 40 hits, including chart-toppers “Can’t Fight This Feeling” and “Keep On Loving You.” The crown jewel of their catalog is 1980’s  Hi Infidelity , which peaked at No. 1 on the Billboard 200 and has since received the rare diamond certification from the RIAA.

Rick Springfield And Company Kickoff I Want My 80s Tour

rick springfield tour review

The I Want My 80s Summer Tour kicked off at the Youngstown Foundation Amphitheatre Friday evening. The tour headlined by Rick Springfield also featured The Hooters, Paul Young and Tommy Tutone. The tour marked the Hooters first U.S. tour in 30 years. The long line at the merch booth was proof enough at how much a tour like this means to the fans. It was a great venue to kick the tour off on a fantastic summer night. Youngstown certainly did a great job with this venue which opened in 2019, creating a fantastic concert atmosphere.

Tommy Tutone was up first and played a 20 minute set that opened with their top-40 hit “Angel Say No” and concluded with the smash “867-5309/Jenny”. Vocalist/guitarist Tommy Heath warmed the crowd up in fine style. The lone downside was how short of a set the band played for.

Up next was English vocalist Paul Young. Young has had five top-40 hits over the years in the U.S. He used. Rick Springfield’s band as did Tommy Tutone which enabled Young to start his set the second Heath walked off at the conclusion of his set. Young also played an abbreviated 4-song, 20 minute set. The boisterous “I’m Gonna Tear Your Playhouse Down” and chart-topper “Every Time You Go Away” were the standout tracks. Ditto on wishing we got a longer set from Young as well.

Then came The Hooters. For the first time in 30 years, Philadelphia’s own, The Hooters have embarked on a full scale U.S. tour. Singer/guitarist Eric Bazilian made mention and wanted to take it all in as he stood centerstage. It was good to finally get to see this band live. I had seen them once prior at Grand Slam 85′, a stadium show in Rochester, NY which was about a month following their historic performance at Live Aid. Time may have passed but these guys still sound great. As the band launched into some of their forgotten gems like “All You Zombies” and “Karla with A K” it was plainly evident that many in the crowd came to see these guys.

While the nostalgia part is all fine and dandy, the band had other ideas and came up with the great idea of releasing a new album Rocking & Swing. “Why Won’t You Call Me Back” was the track played to the crowd. The album has a ska, reggae and rock feel to it tracing back to the band’s early roots.

The band closed out their brief 45-minute set with a cover of Joan Osborne’s “One Of Us” which was written by guitarist Bazilian and also a cover of Cyndi Lauper’s “Time After Time” which vocalist/keyboardist Rob Hyman co wrote with Lauper. Was there any doubt which song the band would end on? “And We Danced” was clearly the song everyone was waiting for and the band ended with a stellar version.

Seeing the band now as veterans as opposed to the seeing them in 85′ as youths, shows these guys still have a passion and desire to give everyone their all. So many band’s go through the motions. Bazilian and Hyman may have been the primary writers but equally important is drummer David Uosikkinen, who also has been there from the beginning. Rounding out the band were guitarist John Lilley, bassist Fran Smith Jr. and guitarist Tommy Williams. Let’s just hope this is not a one off thing and we see more touring down the road.

Headlining the whole affair was Rick Springfield. Hard to believe by month’s end that he will be 74 years old. He does not look like it or act like. His performance was the calibre of someone have his age. Simply amazing. He tore through an hour set featuring many of his hits.

Springfield appears to be a workaholic as he also released his latest album Automatic which coincidentally came out this same day as the opening night of the tour. Automatic features 20 brand new songs as it appears Springfield doesn’t know when to stop as he put it.

The big highlights of the night were the Sammy Hagar penned “I’ve Done Everything For You”, “Love Is Alright Tonight” and what Springfield concert is complete without the number one smash “Jessie’s Girl”. Springfield has had a marvelous career whether it be in music or acting. It seems everything he touches turns to gold. He shows no signs of slowing down in the near future. Hopefully we get I Want My 80s tour for 2024 as well and make it a yearly kind of thing.

'God, sex and death': Rick Springfield discusses the tenets of his music

rick springfield tour review

Even 50 years into his career, Rick Springfield dreams in music.

The title track of his first new studio album since 2018, “Automatic,” seeped into his brain at 3 a.m., prompting Springfield to get up and write down the notes he heard in his head.

“There was no plan,” he says of not only the stomping rocker but also the ambitious 20-song album. “There was no deadline. No one is waiting for the next album from me. I just got to do what I love, which is why I got into music in the first place.”

The seemingly ageless Springfield – he turns 74 on Aug. 23, and aside from some artful gray hair streaks, looks remarkably unchanged – recorded the new songs as soon as he birthed them, joking that his “binge writing” led to a double-digit tracklist.

While “Jessie’s Girl” still follows him on every talk show appearance, Springfield’s 16 other Top 40 hits through the decades (“Affair of the Heart,” “Don’t Talk to Strangers,” “Love Somebody” and “Human Touch” among them) are staples in his live performances, which he has whittled to about 70 a year.

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

On “Automatic,” Springfield’s thoughtfulness and versatility as a writer glows. He delves into recent personal losses, questions his spirituality and unwraps melodic frivolity with equal dexterity.

The musician/actor/author tells us more about the meaning ingrained in his new music, living with depression and why he appreciates fans making the effort to come to his concerts .

An '80s romp: Culture Club, Howard Jones and Berlin offer a night of fun and hits on summer tour

Question: You wrote "She Walks with the Angels" for your longtime engineer and front-of-house mixer Matty Spindel, who died last fall. What did you want people to know about him in the song?

Springfield: We used to call him the “Little Woman.” He had a very feminine vibe to him, although he was heterosexual and had lots of girlfriends through the years. But the “she” just felt right. I usually wait to write after someone I love dies. It took me three years to write “My Father’s Chair” after my dad died, but maybe I’m getting used to people dying. I knew Matty for 25 years. I spent more time with him than my wife. It was an incredibly hard loss and I still feel it, but we all feel his spirit.

The last song on the album, "We Are Eternal," is an intriguing mix of impending dread and hopefulness.

For anyone who hopes for an afterlife, it’s a mixture of dread and ecstasy. The great phrase is everyone wants to go to heaven, but no one wants to die. That song is about Brett Tuggle (who played keyboards in Springfield’s band as well as with Fleetwood Mac and David Lee Roth). Weirdly enough we lost Brett and Matty within six months of each other (Tuggle died in June 2022). I wanted the song to be hopeful. I don’t like writing downer songs when we lose people. Both Matty and Brett were very similar. I don’t know why they take the good ones.

You’ve talked openly about your struggles with depression, and “When God Forgets My Name” is pretty lyrically deep. Is it difficult to be so open?

No. I don’t think about people judging (my songs) when I’m writing; I just think about sharing a feeling. I know myself better than anybody, and in most of the writing there is a kernel of truth somewhere. I don’t restrict myself when I write. There’s always a degree of spit and polish and sweat, and when it comes through, you almost have to get out of the way.

Do you find it harder to write when you’re depressed?

It’s difficult when going through a down period, but it is part of my drive, the darkness. I always need to prove myself to myself. That’s the upside to depression: It forces you to look inside, and that’s gold to a writer.

On a cheerier note, "Come Said the Girl" has a very fun vibe with horns and hand claps.

That one is all about sex, obviously. This album is about my three favorite things – God, sex and death. That’s basically what I’ve written about the last 10 years. I’m still searching for God, interested in sex and curious about death.

I often hear your SiriusXM show ( "Working Class DJ" on the ‘80s on 8 channel ). Do you like doing it, because it’s hard to tell sometimes!

(Laughs.) I love-hate it. I don’t take it seriously at all, which I think shows. I have fun with it. The shows are getting sillier and sillier, and I think people appreciate that I’m not taking myself too seriously. I’m a musician, not a DJ. I don’t even know what I’m talking about sometimes. I wasn’t listening to radio (in the ‘80s) because I was writing and touring.

Anyone who has seen you in concert recently knows that you’ve kept your voice and body in great shape. How do you do it?

I’m conscious of what I eat and I work out every day. I recently got a trainer. If I’m healthy, I’ll enjoy doing what I’m doing. I learned from my dad because he died early (in 1981) and it was diet-related. His heart stopped when he was 51 and they brought him back and he had brain damage and he died 10 years later. That hit me really hard and I started focusing on health. I didn’t realize it was a reaction to him, and it’s a habit now. I hate being sick. I want to stay active, even though I can’t kick as high as I used to.

You’re heading out with The Hooters, Paul Young and Tommy Tutone for the I Want My ‘80s Tour Aug. 4. Since you’re on the road so much, do you ever get to catch any concerts?

Rarely. I was trying to see The Cure but (the timing didn’t work). I saw the (Rolling) Stones on their last tour. Honestly, it’s a pain to go out and see concerts. I don’t know how people do it. Fans will bring an old ticket for me to sign and I’ll see it was 12 bucks and I’ll go, “When did it get up to $60 and $90?” And then you have to park and get a sitter for the kids and have dinner. It’s a big deal. I always thank the audience because they put so much into being there.

REVIEW + PHOTOS: Rick Springfield w/ Men At Work (The AMP, St. Augustine, Aug 05)

by Perry Goldman • August 9, 2022

Attending a rock concert in an amphitheater on a hot August night in St Augustine, FL can sure have its draw backs, particularly for a jaded, old musician like me. First, it’s a two -plus hour drive from my home near Orlando. Second, after about fifteen minutes, you really start to hate the heat and humidity (I’m a lover of AC this time of year!). This tour consists of three acts, all with roots in Australia and their prime being the ’80s — Rick Springfield, Men At Work, & John Waite.

John Waite opened with a 3-piece accompaniment, kind of unplugged and mellow. A good thing I remembered his hit “Missing you”. The female audience seemed to dig his set.

John Waite Live Review

Next up, Men At Work. This is really about Colin Hay, the only original member performing. An international an eclectic collection of fine musicians the M.A.W. set was good mostly of songs I never heard. But then they played “Who Could it Be Now” and “Down Under” and I was thrown back to a rather whimsical era in music history that I somehow survived.

After a brief stage reset, the lights went down and the stage filled with fog. A figure came bouncing on to the stage through the fog and the classic ’80s-style music started pulsating in waves through the venue. Is that really Rick Springfield? Wait, he’s how old? The driving groove of “Affair of the Heart” washes over the ladies in the high-end seats right at the foot of the stage. There’s nothing more oddly entertaining than watching middle-aged women swoon over a Pop singer like High School teeny boppers at a Prom. But the introduction to Rick Springfield’s set is dynamic and yes engaging. So now I’m optimistic. My first and only Springfield performance I attended (till now) was 20 years earlier when he took the lead in the EFX Alive show at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas. That was a very good show.

So, Rick and the band kept driving the throbbing pulse and the ladies seemed to be at his mercy. In between songs he briefly spoke of his battle with depression over the years. Even suicidal thoughts. Then the band plowed into “Don’t Talk to Strangers” and that changed up the vibe. Finally, they dove home with “Jesse’s Girl,” what all the ladies came to hear, dance and bounce around to, wishing they were Ricky’s girl, at least at one time forty years ago. A predictable finale and so triumphant! Well for me, a good enough excuse to get out the house. Admittedly I of course was entertained. Hey, it was Rick Springfield! Go see him on tour if you can, dates here: rickspringfield.com/concerts/

Live Concert Review:  I Want My 80s Tour (Rick Springfield/The Hooters/Paul Young/Tommy Tutone) at Hollywood Casino at Penn National Race Course, August 11, 2023, Grantville, PA

Written and Photographed by Sharon Sipple

I admit my favorite era of music is the 80s!   I have been waiting all summer for this evening.    The Hooters and Rick Springfield were both staples of my playlists and I was fortunate to see both multiple times throughout the years.    Walking into the Penn Heroes Stage at the Hollywood Casino in Grantville PA., there was definitely an air of excitement and anticipation for the evening.    Some fans waiting from early morning until the venue opened around 5:00 to secure their spots up front.    As I watched all the acts that evening, it was evident that everyone of them was having a blast on stage.    What really impressed me was that Tommy Tutone, Paul Young, and The Hooters all went back to the merchandise tent after their set to greet fans and sign autographs.

Rick Springfield, Men at Work and John Waite Are Ready for ‘Incredible’ Tour

Rick Springfield  and Men at Work are  joining forces this summer for an 18-city tour featuring special guest John Waite . All involved say it's going to be an "incredible" run.

The Australian rocker invited UCR to his house in Santa Barbara, where he shared a number of humorous anecdotes from his career. Springfield was joined by Waite and Men at Work's Colin Hay , and plenty of lighthearted banter and the occasional jab ensued.

The summer dates will feature an evening full of MTV -driven hits that scaled the charts time and time again. During the conversation, the three rockers detailed what fans can expect while also sharing some individual updates on projects they have coming up.

This tour is going to be a lot of fun, it seems. What are you all looking forward to? Colin Hay: I'm looking forward to making some loud noises. You know, coming out on stage and seeing big crowds and seeing the other bands is always really good. I'm not thinking, "Oh, I've got to do the whole night myself." It's really good.

Rick Springfield: Yeah, if people show up, it's you. And if they don't show up, it's their fault. [Laughs]

John Waite: There's going to be a stampede of people.

Springfield: There will.

Waite: But they're all going to be leaving. [Laughs]

Springfield: We play very loud. No, it's great. It's great to share a bill, because in a way, you're kind of competing. They were great and you want to be at least as good. So it ups your game. Especially if it's guys you like, which we like each other so far. Once we get on the road, that may change completely. But so far, so good.

It seems like you all have new music that's either done and coming out or on the way.

Waite: I've got a new EP called Anything [on the way] that's very upbeat. I think I owe it to people [because of] the times that we've lived through. I made Wooden Heart  [the three-volume acoustic anthology] when the world was kind of in a dark place with the COVID thing. The new EP is four songs, and they are songs I've had for a while. I recut a lot of songs on the back of the Wooden Heart release, and we're just making an electric album. But making electric music is really difficult, because it can be cliche almost immediately. You find yourself being rock and roll, or you're not doing something, because it's cliche. It becomes very self-conscious. It took me a while to take a run at four songs. They're really good songs. I'm quite proud of them. It will be out in about a month, hard copy in the stores, Target all over America.

Springfield: We have a second Red Locusts [featuring Matt and Gregg Bissonette ] album actually ready to go. We haven't mixed it yet. But once we started, we couldn't stop. It's more Beatle -y stuff. But I have a new record that I've almost finished that is very, very different for me. Like John was saying, it's very up. I don't know how to describe it. It's very hard to describe your own music, but it's hooks, which I kind of center every song on. And it's got weird production. I don't know. You'll just have to listen. You actually have to buy it and find out. Because there will be one copy for sale for $1 million.

Hay: I've got a new record that just came out. It's called Now and the Evermore . It was a great moment for me, having Ringo [Starr] play on the title track. I finished the song, and when I was messing around with the idea for the new song, I always imagined him playing on it for some reason. Then I thought, "Well, I'll just ask him."

Colin, fans will get to hear these Men at Work songs for the first time in a good while. How do you look back on the original era when the band was making those albums?

Hay: Well, you know, the initial band and the people who were in it wasn't really destined to stand the test of time. But the music has, which I'm very grateful for. You know, the music keeps resonating over the decades. I play the songs with the current band that I have at the moment, and everyone responds to it in the same way that they always have. You know, you can't really tell if your music has any kind of timeless quality to it unless a certain amount of time goes by. I love playing those songs. I always love playing them and I still do. I've made a lot of records since then, but I'm happy to go out on this tour and just play Men at Work material, because it's incredible to play and I love playing the songs. The audiences seem to love it as well.

Springfield: It's those songs, too, that enable us to [do something like this].

Waite: Well, it's the voice that's still going, too.

Hay: Speaking of voices!

Waite: The thing that we've all got, I think, is a very different vocal presence. You couldn't imagine anybody else singing Men at Work songs but Colin.

Springfield: I'm going to give it a shot.

Waite: And being the writer, it kind of corners the market on who is going to put Men at Work back together.

Hay: Thank God for that! [Laughs]

Springfield: It's like, Little River Band is not Little River Band anymore. At least we are the ones.

Waite: Yeah, I mean, if you're the singer, you hold the key to it. It's terrible stuff, but it's true. Bands always break up because the drummer always wants to be the singer.

Springfield: I have written a song! [Laughs]

Waite: Yeah, you know, it's always the same way!

Hay: Spinal Tap is very close to it.

Springfield: It's frighteningly close to reality.

Waite: It doesn't matter how calm or nice you are. There's always the same problems in every band. If it isn't somebody else making the problem, it's you. You know, there's like a Spinal Tap , natural progression in every rock band. [Laughs]

Springfield: I've been both the identifier of the problem and the problem.

Watch Men at Work's 'Who Can It Be Now?' Video

John, you've been revisiting your catalog of songs with the Wooden Heart series, as you mentioned earlier. What did you glean from that whole exercise?

Springfield: Let me take that one. [Laughs]

Waite: I always said that if you can play it on the acoustic without a band and without the volume, it's a good song. You know, if it stands up in a folk club, it's going to kill 'em in a stadium. The Wooden Heart thing, I went back and looked at the most evolved songs. I even did "Isn’t It Time," the Babys song, which had brass, a full orchestra, African American backup singers and a rock band, the Babys. I did it with one guitar and a vocal. It shows you the strength of the song. But I was only interested in the songs that were lyric-driven or unusual pieces of music. ... There was enough songs to make it a really interesting triple album.

Rick, you've had an association with Sammy Hagar for a lot of years now. What's one of your favorite Sammy stories from over the years?

Springfield: Nothing I can probably say on camera. [Laughs] You know, Sammy's always been very helpful. When I first started having some hits, he helped me pull together a PA system and lights for a show I did here. He's always been very supportive. You know, we've stayed in touch, and when he had this rum deal, I thought, "Why not?" We have a rum together called Beach Bar Rum, and I'm not plugging it or anything, I'm just saying, because you brought it up. It's awesome.

Hay: You're in the rum business?

Springfield: Yeah, Beach Bar Rum. It’s amazing. Do we have any we can share with our friends? Let's give John some rum.

Waite: No, no. The pants are staying on, my friend.

Making music during the MTV era, what were some of the things that went wrong as you were doing videos?

Hay: We were doing a video for a song called " High Wire " many years ago. We employed the services of a circus. In the background, there was a camel and the camel's handler. I think the camel's handler was not a very nice person and had perhaps abused the animals. So he was distracted by the camera and what we were shooting. The camel noticed this and picked him up by the shoulders and just started shaking him around. You can see that in the video.

Springfield: What prompted you to have a camel in the video?

Hay: Well, we had the whole circus. That's what sprang to mind.

Springfield: I was doing a shoot for a video in England for a song called " Don’t Walk Away ." I had this great idea. We were on the beach, down in Brighton, I guess it was. I said, "I'm going to lie down in the water, and then we'll reverse it and I'll come up out of the water dry." So we used it, but I did it and then I came up and I see this building, like on the coast, and I go, "What's that?" They said, "It's a nuclear power station!" I went, "Oh! I might have just bathed myself in nuclear waste."

Waite: I wrote a song called "In Dreams" with Mark Spiro for a Quentin Tarantino movie called True Romance . The director wanted to shoot the video. Tony Scott. I met Tony at Monument Valley, and he took me up in a helicopter and dropped me on top of a mesa. It was like 6,000 feet up, and I'm scared of heights. They drop me from the helicopter on top of this thing and put a wire cable up my leg and nailed me to the top of this thing. Then they were dive-bombing me. You can see the curvature of the earth, it's that high. It's Tony Scott and it's a beautiful, fantastic movie. I'm very proud of having a song in it. I love Tony, and he was a really lovely guy. I really fell in love with the guy immediately. He was just a great guy and a great talent. Then he took me in the helicopter. I mean, you have to get off this mesa because of the updraft. You went to the edge in a helicopter, and then he goes straight down, so you don't get blown back. I'm scared of heights, right? I'm in the back with Tony Scott. Then he's got me hanging out of the helicopter on straps singing the song, as you do.

Concert review and photos: Rick Springfield and Richard Marx pack hits, emotion into Atlanta show

Fans are used to the musical cross-pollinations of bands such as Chicago and Earth, Wind & Fire sharing a bill and a stage.

But, as Richard Marx noted in an interview with The Atlanta Journal-Constitution last week , it's tougher for solo acts to find a like-minded and similar fan-demographic partner (can we name any artists who succeeded at this other than Billy Joel and Elton John?).

All hail the manager who prodded pals Marx and Rick Springfield – who have known each other for three decades and are both Malibu dwellers – to take their joint act on the road last December.

The twosome has played a few pockets of dates in the ensuing year, and on Tuesday brought their hits-packed gig to Atlanta Symphony Hall ( they play in Augusta on Wednesday ), where they engaged a primarily female audience – of varying degrees of inebriation and chattiness – for nearly three hours.

Richard Marx brought plenty of emotion to his well-crafted catalog. Photo: Melissa Ruggieri/AJC

These maestros of melody don’t need any accompaniment because the spines of their songs are indestructible and capable of soaring in their sparsest form. And so the stage was dotted with acoustic guitars, a piano (for Marx) and a laptop for occasional electronic accoutrements (for Springfield).

Marx, a slight figure in shades of black and gray, emerged first for an hour-long set that highlighted his massive catalog. “Satisfied,” “Take This Heart” and “Keep Coming Back” all made early appearances, as well as the eerie “Hazard,” which worked well powered only by a tightly strummed guitar.

Anyone who has spent time with Marx in concert before knows of his winking sense of humor. He was in chipper form on this night as he told amusing stories about the fans who still approach him to ask if “Hazard” is autobiographical and one guy at another show who requested “Summer of ’69,” thinking Marx was its creator (and yes, he played it, both then and on Tuesday).

Marx and Springfield are both engaging personalities with admirable self-awareness – and both happen to also be underrated musicians.

Marx’s distinctive voice was filled with emotion and a hint of rasp as he untethered “Hold On To the Nights” (which took on a new beauty in its guitar form) and “Now and Forever.” He also wisely reminded the crowd – which seemed divided in its loyalty for the well-coiffed duo – of his extensive songwriting background by playing snippets of songs he wrote for Luther Vandross (“Dance with My Father), ‘N Sync  (“This I Promise You”) and Keith Urban (“Better Life”).

For both Marx and Springfield, the highlights of their respective sets were their most vulnerable offerings.

Rick Springfield is one of music's most underrated guitarists. Photo: Melissa Ruggieri/AJC

With Marx, it was during his more recent hit, “When You Loved Me,” which provided him an opportunity to talk lovingly about his three grown sons, who assisted him on the tune. Marx played along to a video of the guys recording the song in the studio – a sweet touch and rare glimpse of family life.

Springfield’s opening salvo included his early-‘80s favorites “I Get Excited” and “Love it Alright Tonight,” which he performed in between telling stories about his ancestors and showing a copy of a boyhood report card (no surprise, “Richard” needed to stop missing class and concentrate!).

His melding of “Jessie’s Girl” with Tommy Tutone’s “867-5309/Jenny” and Fountains of Wayne’s “Stacy’s Mom” was inspired, clever and funny, and he demonstrated his quick wit when a guy in the front row dashed out in the middle of “Human Touch.”

“Seriously, dude?” Springfield said, jokingly, as he briefly stopped the song to tease some more.

His voice strong and clear, Springfield was also in a jovial mood as he shared stories behind his songs (he dubbed “Don’t Talk to Strangers” his tale of “sexual paranoia”) and to close his solo portion, explained the backstory (for those few who still don’t know) about “Jessie’s Girl.”

But it was his self-described “orphan suite” that will resonate far beyond Tuesday’s performance.

Springfield, as fans know, is an emotional guy. But the rawness with which he delivered “4 Billion Heartbeats,” written after his 96-year-old mom died last December, and his soul-gripping “My Father’s Chair,” a cherished track on 1985’s “Tao” album, was piercing.

Standing at the foot of the stage, sans microphone and voice wavering, Springfield sang the second verse of the song written after his father’s death more than 30 years ago, but clearly no less painful to perform.

Moments such as that – as well as the light-hearted singalong at the close of the show when Marx and Springfield performed four songs from their respective catalogs (“Don’t Mean Nothing” and “Affair of the Heart” among them) – provide meaning along with the memories.

Rick Springfield and Richard Marx reveal the songs they wish they’d written

It's been nearly 45 years since Rick Springfield released his chart-topping hit "Jessie's Girl," and the rocker still brings down the house whenever he plays the iconic song .

"I'm very proud of having written it. It's a gift that it's gone where it's gone, too," Springfield tells TODAY.com during a sit-down interview.

And, despite having performed the Billboard Hot 100 No. 1 song hundreds (if not thousands) of times, the singer-songwriter says he still gets a thrill every time he plays it.

"That one, it's like, 'Yeah, let's party, let's share this,'" says Springfield.

It's "Jessie's Girl" that put the Australian-born musician on the map, as well as the radar of millions of women who simultaneously watched him as Dr. Noah Drake on the daytime soap opera "General Hospital."

The perfect storm of exposure catapulted Springfield into global fame, earning him the distinction of being a bona fide heartthrob in the 1980s, throughout which he released a string of successful albums including "Working Class Dog," "Success Hasn't Spoiled Me Yet" and "Hard to Hold."

Now, at 74, he's still out on the road, playing to eager audiences, and says it's unlikely he'll ever stop.

"I always say if I retired, I'd probably just get a band together and hit the road," Springfield says with a laugh.

Over the past several years, he's been joined onstage by fellow musician and friend Richard Marx for a series of acoustic concerts in which the pair play their hits.

Rick Springfield and Richard Marx in concert in 2017.

A pop sensation in his own right, Marx went to the top of Billboard's Hot 100 in the '80s and '90s with songs like "Hold on to the Nights," "Right Here Waiting" and "Satisfied," along with many others.

Marx, who joined Springfield in talking to TODAY.com, says the music collaboration is a fulfilling one and that their two-man show is as much about their back-and-forth banter as it is about music.

"The bits in between the songs is the show," Marx explains. "We're both really grateful to have a catalog of songs to play and we deliver that musically solid, but it's the stuff in between the songs ..."

"That's the fun," finishes Springfield.

The pair met backstage during one of Marx's shows in 1988 and, after becoming fast friends, have remained close since. When they're together, they say they can't help but goof around.

"We crack each other up, which happens every show, where (there's) something that's completely unplanned or just stupid," Marx tells TODAY.com.

When they aren't performing together, Marx and Springfield each tour separately with their impressive list of No. 1's. When asked how being on the road is different now than it was a decade or two ago, Marx says that over time, he's gained a deeper appreciation of the audience.

"The pure joy of walking offstage, knowing that everybody had a great time and that connection, that's precious to me," says Marx.

Rick Springfield performs at his Las Vegas residency in 2023.

For Springfield, it goes deeper, saying that in his early days of success, fame got to his head. "When you're young, your ego kind of does take over," he explains. Those days, however, are long behind him. "Now it's like, 'Hey! We're still alive and doing this. How cool is that?'" says Springfield.

Springfield also says that like Marx, he's come to realize over the years that it's not so much about him but rather the audience.

"It's about them. Because if they weren't there, you'd still be recording your demos and sticking them on your shelf and have nothing," he says.

Stranded on a desert island with only one record?

Both musicians say that even after all this time, they haven't grown tired of performing their hit songs, in part because they're the ones who penned them.

"When I look down at the setlist, I'm like, 'Oh, yeah, I love that one' or, 'I can't wait (to play that one),'" says Marx. "I wrote all those songs, (Rick) wrote all his songs. When I've heard about people saying, 'I'm so sick of playing that song,' it's never a song that they wrote."

As far as songs they've haven't written go, there are a few that Marx and Springfield say they wish they had.

Among them? "Red Rain," by Peter Gabriel, says Marx.

Springfield agrees, calling Gabriel his "favorite" all-around artist. A Beatles fan at heart, Springfield also says he wishes he'd penned "every great song the Beatles ever wrote," as well as the Kinks classic "You Really Got Me," a song that led him to break the law in order to own it when he was a kid.

"I remember being 12 years old and I actually stole that single because I couldn't afford to buy it. So, I went and stuck it under my jacket and walked out with it," says Springfield.

It's still a tune he says gives him chills when he hears it. "That was suddenly rock and roll and it blew my mind."

If he were stranded on a desert island with only one record to play for the rest of all time, Marx says he'd choose the classic Earth, Wind & Fire album "I Am."

And, on brand, Springfield would pick the Beatles' "Revolver."

The road to 'world domination'

After more than four successful decades in the business, the two musicians reflect on what remains unfinished in their respective lives.

"I feel like I checked so many of the wish list, bucket list stuff off over the years that I'm not motivated by that," says Marx, who's been married to actor and fashion magnate Daisy Fuentes since 2015. Instead, keenly aware of "the clock ticking," he wants to simply enjoy life.

Daisy Fuentes and Richard Marx in 2018.

"More outside-of-my-comfort-zone experiences, learning new stuff," he says, explaining that even though he's pretty good at making the most out of living, he "could be better at that."

Next up for Springfield? "World domination," the musician jokes before getting serious and saying that fully embracing life is what matters the most to him.

Candid about his struggle with depression through the years, Springfield says that it's the condition that likely led to his fame.

"That's what gave me my drive initially, that pulled me from a little farm town in Australia to come over here and try my luck," he says.

But despite his success, Springfield says that fighting the "big critic in my head" remains a challenge. "It's like anything, it's part of an upside and downside to everything. A lot of the ideas for my songs came from me being depressed and trying to figure out why."

Rick Springfield Portrait Session

Through meditation and other supports, including his longtime wife, Barbara Porter, Springfield says he's been successful, to some degree, in combating his demons. And though he still feels like he's still got unfinished business, he tempers it with being grateful for what he's got.

"My favorite thing is just to sit at home with my wife and our dog, having had our kids over for dinner and writing," he says.

Because, when it comes down to it, Springfield says that's what he and Marx are at their core: writers.

"That's the most joy I have, when I really feel something has come through and I've gone, 'Wow, I think I might have nailed that.'"

REO Speedwagon and Rick Springfield

Classic Rock hitmakers REO Speedwagon and Rick Springfield are joining forces for an upcoming tour and just announced a stop at the Florence Center on Saturday, March 23, 2024.

About REO Speedwagon

Formed in 1967, signed in 1971, and fronted by iconic vocalist Kevin Cronin since 1972, REO Speedwagon’s unrelenting drive, as well as non-stop touring and recording jump-started the burgeoning rock movement in the Midwest. Platinum albums and radio staples soon followed, setting the stage for the release of the band’s explosive Hi Infidelity in 1980, which contained the massive hit singles “Keep On Loving You” and “Take It On the Run.” That landmark album spent 15 weeks in the No. 1 slot and has since earned the RIAA’s coveted 10X Diamond Award for surpassing sales of 10 million units in the United States.

From 1977 to 1989, the band released nine consecutive albums all certified Platinum or higher. Today, REO Speedwagon has sold more than 40 million albums around the globe, and Cronin and bandmates Bruce Hall (bass), Dave Amato (guitar), Bryan Hitt (drums), and Derek Hilland (touring keyboardist) are still electrifying audiences worldwide in concert with hits and fan-favorites such as “Ridin’ The Storm Out,” “Can’t Fight This Feeling,” “Time For Me To Fly,” “Roll With The Changes,” the aforementioned “Keep On Loving You” and “Take It On the Run,” and many, many more.

As a Grammy Award-winning singer, songwriter, and musician, he has sold 25 million albums and delivered 17 U.S. Top 40 hits, including classics like "Jessie's Girl" and "Don't Talk to Strangers." Beyond music, he's made his mark as an accomplished actor in films like "Ricki and the Flash" and TV series like "Supernatural" and "American Horror Story."

Springfield is also a celebrated author with works such as his candid memoir "Late, Late at Night" and the comedic novel "Magnificent Vibration." His dedication to his craft and continuous creativity have earned him a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. Despite his long-lasting success, he remains committed to pushing boundaries and connecting with audiences through his music. In 2019, he released "Orchestrating My Life," a collection of his hits reimagined with a rock orchestra and a touching tribute to his late mother. Rick Springfield's enduring impact on the entertainment world has been aptly dubbed "The Rickonaissance."

‘Angry Guy’ Reviews: Rick Springfield – Texas State Fair – Dallas, Texas – September 27, 2019

I just got my assignment for the week. I am going to Texas, to the State Fair, to cover Rick Springfield! Yes that’s right Dr. Noah Drake.

The Texas State Fair is a huge event. It lasts for 6 months and is the 4th largest city in the United States. There are pigs, hogs, cows and Heifers, and those are just the people on line for the fried Oreos.

I get to the fair early and I eat my way to the stage. “Cajun Crab Bombs”. Sounds like something I got in that New Orleans Whorehouse in ’84.  “PB&J Bacon Pickle Dog”, “Fried Rat Penis”, “Pig in a Cannoli” – sounds like my first girlfriend in Brooklyn. I am stuffed.

rick springfield tour review

After a 2 hour break at the “Port-a-Potty”, I am ready for some good music. Unfortunately, all I got is Rick Springfield. I figure it will be like a 5 minute concert, because the guy only has 1 song.

Well, I am wrong, I am stuck there for what seems like hours, listening to chubby, bedazzled,  Texas housewives squeal to songs I have never heard. Springfield was smart though and played “Jessie’s Girl” three times.

His hair looked good though. Ok, 3 deep fried monkey brains in an ice cream cone, to go, please.

Recent tour reviews

The concert was awesome. Rick had a sore throat and still sang great. I love him and his singing. I waited a long time for him to come to my hometown and it was well worth the wait. I loved when he sang my father’s chair unplugged. He engaged the audience and told stories and jokes . I will go see him again in concert.

This “Stripped Down” show was one of the best concerts that I’ve ever attended! A rather small venue with just him and a “band in a box”, and personal story sharing with a slide show, provided a very intimate experience!! Got to see a whole different side of an artist that I’ve ever had before, he even came out and walked, talked, and shared hugs with the crowd during the show. This is an amazingly deep, rich-experienced man, sharing his true self. Thanks Rick!!!

Rick Springfield is rocking 70 years old and he is a natural entertainer. I have seen him in many unique settings but the Atlanta Symphony performance was one of my favorites. He played new songs and all of the oldie but goodies. I saw him for the first time when I was 11 and the 50 year old me loves him all the same.
