Tour the Castle Where the Queen Is Self-quarantined From Your Couch (Video)

No crown required.

queen elizabeth virtual tour

Are you going stir-crazy yet? Losing track of the days? Refreshing the news at a rapid-fire pace? Engaging in a daily self-debate about whether or not to get dressed?

There’s no doubt about it: These are unfamiliar, unprecedented times. Luckily, there are plenty of ways to take the edge off: finally visit that museum or national park that’s been sitting on your bucket list, tune in to an opera or Broadway musical , ooh and aww at adorable wildlife , walk over 825 miles of beach in Florida , or even vacation in Japan – all without leaving home.

Now, you can escape your cooped-up space once again — even if for a brief moment — with a virtual tour of Windsor Castle in England. You may recognize its stunning exterior if you stayed up all night to watch Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s wedding , but here’s your chance to get an inside peek behind the curtains.

This digital tour brings viewers inside the State Banquet in St. George’s Hall, the Waterloo Chamber, and the Crimson Drawing Room — each one more opulent than the next, with chandeliers, gilded ceilings, and rich tapestries and paintings. Zoom in and out of each space to make yourself at home, then click on information icons for even more details.

At more than 900 years old, the 11th-century fortress serves as the Queen’s private home (usually on weekends) as well as a royal residence where she performs many formal duties. It’s also the place where Her Majesty hosts visiting monarchs and presidents — and where she and Prince Philip are presently self-isolating amid the coronavirus outbreak.

And Windsor Castle isn’t the only place where you can walk in the footsteps of royalty without getting off your couch — a number of famous European castles , from Buckingham Palace to the Palace of Versailles, are offering virtual tours fit for a king or queen, too.

Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth II was the longest reigning monarch in British history. She witnessed many changes of government and advised no fewer than 15 successive Prime Ministers. In 2022, she became the first British monarch to celebrate a Platinum Jubilee, commemorating 70 years of service.

To mark this unprecedented milestone, we brought together 28 paintings from our collection that shed light on the notion of queenship, including portraits of female rulers from different times and countries as well as images that relate to some of the attributes most frequently associated with female monarchs past and present.

Now You Can Tour Buckingham Palace From Anywhere in the World

By Brooke Bobb

buckingham palace

Never been inside the home of Queen Elizabeth II before? Thanks to Google, you can finally “walk” the royal halls. Mere commoners can head over to YouTube to watch the tour, but for the full experience, you’ll need to add a piece of cardboard to the mix. Google’s cardboard virtual reality headset allows viewers to use their smartphones to download and watch 3-D videos as part of the Google Expeditions Pioneer Program —a tool created specifically for teachers that allows them to distribute the headsets to their students and take them on virtual trips around the globe. Google polled schoolchildren and found that Buckingham Palace was their most desired place to visit, landing the royal residence a spot on the ever-growing roster of journeys. The existing 150 trips include sites like Yosemite, Mt. Fuji, and the Great Barrier Reef.

The new tour takes viewers on a “stroll” through seven staterooms, including the Green Drawing Room and the Picture Gallery, with accompanying commentary from the queen’s Master of the Household and Curator of Paintings. The tour also features the White Drawing Room and its secret door leading to the queen’s private apartments. Thrones, grand ballrooms, silk wall coverings, and ornate chandeliers—quite the regal experience for a $20 piece of cardboard.

Virtual Tour of Windsor Castle

Windsor Castle

Are you feeling cooped up or going stir crazy? Now, you can quarantine with Queen Elizabeth, via a virtual tour of the UNESCO-listed Windsor Castle. Or relive the wedding of retired royals Prince Harry and Meghan Markle.

Windsor Castle has been a royal residence and fortress for almost 1000 years. The castle has seen countless royal births, deaths, and marriages. It’s withstood battles and sieges.

History of Windsor Castle

Windsor Castle was originally a fortress for Saxon kings. In the 11th century, William the Conqueror used it to form a defensive ring outside of London, along with 8 other castles. It was conveniently just a day’s march from the Tower of London .

Windsor Castle as envisaged in 1216 (Royal Collection Trust/Bob Marshall)

Henry I was the first king began to occupy Windsor Castle. Henry II later built it into a proper royal fortress with formidable stone walls. Edward III completed its transformation into a Gothic royal palace.

Royal Chapel

Queen Elizabeth I got busy too. She added what is now the Royal Library. George IV renovated the entire palace. And Queen Victoria added a private chapel and rebuilt the Grand Staircase.

Windsor Castle is also home to one of the most beautiful Gothic chapels in the world, St. George’s Chapel. Edward IV began construction and Henry VIII finished it in 1528. The chapel has been the scene of many royal weddings. It’s also a royal mausoleum, with 10 monarchs buried there, including Henry VIII.

Art Collection

Windsor Castle has an impressive art collection too, with works by Rembrandt, Canaletto, Holbein, and Rubens.

It even owns drawings by Leonardo da Vinci, which are the sole extant evidence that da Vinci painted the controversial Salvator Mundi , the world’s most expensive painting ($450 million).

St. George's Chapel at Windsor Castle

Windsor Castle has been the site of many historic events. It’s where the Magna Carta was signed, where Edward VIII abdicated the throne, and where Queen Victoria fell in love with Albert.

Today, Windsor Castle is the largest occupied working castle in the world. The Queen uses Windsor Castle as a private home. She often weekends there and hosts visiting monarchs and presidents at “dine and sleep” events. Now, the queen is self-isolating at Windsor Castle.

You can quarantine with the queen via the Windsor Castle virtual tour . The tour takes viewers inside the State Banquet Hall, the Waterloo Chamber, the Crimson Drawing Room, and St. George’s Chapel. The opulent rooms feature chandeliers, gilded ceilings, rich tapestries, and paintings.

the Crimson Room in Windsor Castle

On the virtual tour, you can make yourself at home in each room. You can zoom in or click on information icons for more details.

If you want to really get to know Queen Elizabeth, you can delve into her life story, with over 3,000 entries on Google Arts & Culture .

You can also take a virtual 360 tour by the BBC on YouTube, and discover some of the royals’ most valuable treasures.

Or listen to the queen herself talk about the coronavirus crisis here . If you’d need more virtual tours, here’s my guide to virtual tours of famous royal palaces in Europe .

You Can Now Enjoy a Virtual Tour of Buckingham Palace (& Pretend You’re Queen Elizabeth Herself)

Author image: lex

If you’re sick of watching Love Is Blind , scrolling through Instagram and playing board games, then consider something a little more stimulating while self-distancing at home today.

Ever dreamed of perusing through Buckingham Palace ? Well now you can, thanks to the royal family’s virtual tour of Queen Elizabeth’s humble abode.

The tour, which can be found on the royal family’s website , kicks off in the throne room, naturally. Viewers can zoom in and out to really get the scope of the space, as well as click on little information buttons to learn more about important items. For instance, did you know the thrones are actually called the chairs of estate and are carved from gilded beachwood and embossed with the ciphers ‘EIIR’ for Her Majesty and ‘P’ for Prince Philip? That’s just one of the many exciting royal facts you’ll learn on the tour.

From there, we continue to the grand staircase and the white drawing-room. Sadly, the entire palace isn’t accessible for virtual tours, but something is better than nothing. And, there’s so much to digest in these three spaces that it’ll definitely keep you entertained.

So what should you expect? Lots of gold and red (they are royal hues, after all) and significant family heirlooms like the early 20th-century portrait of Queen Alexandra hanging above the fireplace in the white drawing room or the Oath of the Horatti clock, which was acquired by George IV in 1809, in the throne room.

If you’ve already binged The Crown and are going stir crazy without royal engagements to keep you busy, give the tour a whirl. We bet you’ll feel just like QEII herself.

Pan 3Sixty Limited

Cruise ship virtual tours of the Three Queens

Pan 3Sixty has worked with Cunard on multiple occasions since 2007 to create 360° cruise ship virtual tours for all three Queens; Queen Victoria, Queen Mary 2 and Queen Elizabeth. The finished virtual tours have been viewed by hundred of thousands of viewers, enabling existing Cunard clients to explore these magnificent ships and potential clients to immerse themselves in the Cunard brand.

Queen Victoria

In 2007 creative agency Refreshed Media partnered with Pan 3Sixty to create a 360° virtual tour of the Cunard’s latest Queen, MS Queen Victoria .

With the 360° virtual tour set to go live on the day of Queen Victoria’s maiden voyage from Southampton, the ship was photographed whilst she was still under construction in the Fincantieri dockyard in Venice, and then at sea bound for Southampton.

In addition to overcoming numerous technical challenges of photographing a moving ship, still under construction, sometimes with models, we worked to a 24 hour timetable to ensure that each location was photographed when it looked its best, not matter what hour of the day or night. To save further time we set up a digital darkroom onboard so the 360° panoramas and retouching work could be carried out in parallel to the photography. This also enabled us to work closely with client and a number of Cunard stakeholders to ensure the finished 360° panoramas were approved prior to going live.

We created 40 high quality 360° panoramas to convey the feeling of luxury found onboard Queen Victoria. From the spectacular Grand Lobby rising over three decks to the luxurious Staterooms, from dining to relaxation, from fitness to entertainment, all aspects of the ship were carefully considered, skilfully photographed and the completed 360° panoramas incorporated into the virtual tour prior to the deadline.

The Queen Victoria virtual tour was an overwhelming success on its launch, receiving 90,000 unique visits in the first few months, rising to just under 200,000 in the first six months. It set new standard for cruise ship virtual tours and differentiated Cunard from the competition by providing their customers to with a real feeling for the ship prior to making a booking.

Queen Mary 2 and Queen Elizabeth

Following on from the success of the Queen Victoria virtual tour, Pan 3Sixty completed two further major commissions to create a virtual tours of Cunard’s flag ship, Queen Mary 2 and also Cunard’s newest liner, Queen Elizabeth .

Subsequent smaller commissions have also seen us photograph the three Queens following major refurbishment work, so customers can see the new interiors, staterooms and suites.
