Conch fritters in the Bahamas

FRUITS OF THE SEA

Little-known as a culinary ingredient in the continental U.S., conch is a large mollusk (akin to clams) with a meaty texture. Locals use it to prepare conch salad, conch fritters, conch chowder and more.

PEAS N' RICE

CITRUS DELIGHT

Switcha, which many locals consider the official Bahamian drink, blends lemons and limes to concoct a powerful accompaniment to dessert or a refreshing beverage on a hot sunny day.

Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line Review: Here is What I Loved

Ben Souza

I’ve heard a lot of different things about Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line but there is really only one way to truly find out what a cruise is all about.  You have to try it for yourself.   What was my experience like?  Here is what I loved about Grand Celebration and why I will be cruising again with Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line again in the future.

Embarkation – Embarkation at the Port of Palm Beach was a total breeze.  They have a separate line for those with U.S. passports and it is much shorter than the line with guests cruising with birth certificates.   They also have a separate line at customs when you disembark so having a U.S. passport saves a lot of time from waiting in lines.

One thing I liked was after checking in, you can book shore excursions, dinner reservations, and drink packages right in the terminal while you wait for the ship to begin boarding. Not sure why other cruise lines don’t also do this.

Ship – Grand Celebration was originally built by Carnival Cruise Line and is the last Holiday class ship built by the cruise line. The ship went into service in 1987 but was recently refurbished after the vessel housed FEMA workers in St. Thomas this past fall.

For a 31 year old cruise ship, I was really impressed how clean and updated the ship was.  During my cruise, I posted dozens of videos and photos on Snapchat throughout each day of the ship.  I had a travel agent write to me saying how impressed they were with the ship after following along on my journey.  It far exceeded my expectations.

While the ship featured many modern touches, it still had the charm of an older cruise ship.  At 47,000 gross tons, you can easily navigate from one end of the ship to the other quickly.

I included a full video tour of the cruise ship farther down in this article.

Cabin – My ocean view cabin (E101) on deck 7 was larger than cabins I have been in on many of the mainstream cruise lines.  One nice surprise was the size of the shower.  I found it interesting that cruise lines built larger showers on cruise ships in 1987 than they do today.  The cabin had a flat screen TV, plenty of storage space, and one 110 power outlet by the desk.  You can view a short video tour of my cabin below.

My room steward did a tremendous job keeping my cabin clean with morning and evening service.  He also made towel animals and placed chocolate on the pillows each evening.  It was a nice little touch that I wasn’t expecting on a two night cruise.

Steakhouse/Seafood Restaurant (Admiral’s)  – I normally don’t go into much detail about food since it is so subjective.  However, I have to talk about my experience at Admiral’s on my last night of the cruise. I honestly had no idea what to expect but was pretty much blown away.

There is a $29 surcharge (plus gratuity) for the restaurant and I can honestly say it is worth every penny.  I love to try all of the steakhouses on cruise ships and this ranks up there with the best of them.

The service was incredible, my filet was cooked to perfection, and the coffee cheesecake was one of the best desserts I’ve ever had on a cruise.  I honestly can’t say enough good things about the restaurant.

Entertainment – For a small ship, I thought there was a good variety of entertainment and live music throughout the ship.  I’m really not a show person and rarely go to them while on a cruise, but I made an exception for this cruise since I’ve never cruised on this cruise line before.

The first night was a variety show that had a family friendly comedian, an illusionist, and your typical cruise production dance show. It was similar quality to what the mainstream cruise lines offer on their older ships.  The audience gave the production team a rousing ovation after the Riverdance portion of the show.

Around the ship at night, I came across the following live music:

  • 5 piece cover band
  • Tina Turner impersonator
  • Man playing the piano and singing
  • Saxophonist in one of the lounges
  • Karaoke on the pool deck at night

Video tour of Grand Celebration

Odds and Ends

Grand Celebration offers two night cruises to Freeport, Bahamas from West Palm Beach.  However, the ship offers something that no one else does.  You can either take the two night cruise, or you can get off the ship when you reach the Bahamas and stay in a resort for a few nights.  Once your stay is done at the resort, you take a one night cruise back to West Palm Beach.

There were always loungers available around the ship. The Oasis is an adults only area in the front of the ship that was never more than half full and is the perfect place to kick back and relax.

The ship never seemed crowded and rarely if ever had to wait in line for anything.

The entire inside of the ship is smoke free.  Smoking sections are outside on the port side of the ship.  Since the casino is also part of a lounge and you have to walk through it to get from one end of the ship to the other, it’s really nice not having to deal with the stench that come with every other casino on cruise ships.

The value for the amount you pay for your cruise on Grand Celebration is hard to beat. It is perfect for short getaways, birthdays, anniversaries, bachelor/bachelorette parties etc.

Before my cruise, I had someone ask me if I had to attend a timeshare presentation once onboard.  Throughout my entire cruise, I didn’t see or hear one thing about timeshares, it was just like every other cruise I’ve taken (just shorter).

The buffet didn’t offer a large variety of items, but what they did offer was adequate for a two night cruise.  Dinner only had a few options (pizza, pasta etc) so you will want to eat in the main dining room or specialty restaurant at night.

There was an adult comedy show one night that had a $12 surcharge per person.  The same comedian gave a 10 minute family friendly show each night in the theater as part of the entertainment shows which had no charge.

When you do book a cruise on Grand Celebration, fill out all of the forms they send you before you arrive at the port.  This will help speed up the check-in process.

Cruise over all was moderately okay. Once 3rd day which is day off the boat the whole family which includes 18 month old and 10 year old ( this was her bday gift) got red little itchy, stinging bumps all over our back, legs, and arms. Went to family dr once back home in Atlanta and diagnosised Bed Bug Bites. Tried reaching over 5x now to manager Maria at the cruise line but she is always in a “meeting”.

I took this 3-day 2-night cruise with my mother and it was her first time cruising. We both had an amazing time the staff was outstanding the food was great. There was so much stuff to do on the ship you could never get bored. We will Cruise again with Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line in the future. Without a doubt we will bring our friends and family and make it a big celebration.

Smoking sections are outside on the port side of the ship.

no smoking and no balconies? lol no thank you.

Love the smaller ships! This is much like the ship I took my first cruise on. I like roomier decks where I can watch the waves, read , and walk. This is a must try cruise line. Thanks for the excellent review!

So happy to see your review. We have been sailing with this Cruise Line since they had the Bahamas celebration ship and have always been very happy with the service and accommodations on board. We have made many friends among the staff they are extremely personable and efficient. We have intentions of continuing to cruise with this line, it’s a wonderful quick getaway!

Never heard of “surcharge” to see an on-board show before… I sure hope its NOT a new upcoming fleetwide cruise trend.. We cruise 4-5 times a year..

Bahamas cruise guide: Best itineraries, planning tips and things to do

Ashley Kosciolek

If you've cruised or are planning to cruise to someplace warm, it's likely the Bahamas will pop up on your itinerary -- and for good reason. Found on Bahamas-exclusive sailings and Caribbean voyages, Bahamian ports offer plenty of sun and sand, as well as opportunities for shopping, gambling and more.

The islands appeal to both new and seasoned cruisers. Their proximity to Florida makes them quick, easy and affordable to reach by ship, whether for a quick overnight trip or a call as part of a longer voyage.

Read on for all you need to know when planning a sailing that includes the Bahamas -- one of the cruise industry's most popular destinations.

For more cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

Why cruise to the Bahamas?

bahamas paradise cruise and stay

In the Bahamas, the people are as warm as the weather, offering greetings and friendly smiles at every turn. The main draws, however, are the beaches and bright blue waters, which offer plenty of places to snorkel and scuba dive or to work on your tan while sipping a cocktail or two.

One of the best reasons to visit is that the islands are close to Florida -- the cruise capital of the world. The Bahamas are frequented by most major cruise lines and show up on a large number of itineraries, from two-nighters to longer voyages.

The takeaway: Passengers are spoiled for choice. If you want to travel to the Bahamas by cruise ship, you can easily find a cruise line, length and price point to meet your needs.

The Bahamas is a great place to visit, as long as you set your expectations. Nassau, which is the largest port and the country's capital city, is often crowded with cruise ships. Locals will approach you with offers for everything from taxi rides to hair braiding. It can be overwhelming, so be prepared to politely decline if you're not interested.

When do cruises go to the Bahamas?

bahamas paradise cruise and stay

Cruise ships call on the Bahamas all year. However, midwinter is generally the best time to go. Prices are cheaper, there are fewer passengers because children are in school, and the weather isn't as sweltering as it is in the summer. Plus, wave season -- when cruise lines offer some of the best deals you'll see all year -- runs from January through March, so you could snag a last-minute bargain.

Weather in the Bahamas is generally mild, with temperatures ranging from the high 70s to low 90s Fahrenheit. As expected, the hottest months are found during the summer, with lower temperatures during the winter.

Best Bahamas itineraries

bahamas paradise cruise and stay

Islands in the Bahamas are found on lots of itineraries, ranging from short, Bahamas-specific sailings to longer Eastern and Western Caribbean voyages.

Bahamas-only cruises tend to be anywhere from two to five nights, and they visit a port or two in the Bahamas, as well as a private island (see below).

Eastern and Western Caribbean sailings usually start at five nights and can run up to two weeks in length, but most usually last about a week.

On those voyages, you're likely to see a mix ports. In the Eastern Caribbean, expect to visit a combination of Puerto Rico, St. Maarten, the U.S. Virgin Islands (St. Thomas, St. John and St. Croix) and the French West Indies (Martinique, St. Barts, Guadeloupe and St. Martin). If you go the western route, Belize, Honduras and Jamaica are common stops.

Additionally, cruisers can find Bahamas stops on sailings that depart from non-Florida ports on the U.S. East Coast, such as New York and Baltimore. They are often seven or eight days in length and include calls on Florida and the Bahamas. Some also feature southern ports like Charleston.

Best Bahamas cruise lines

bahamas paradise cruise and stay

Due to the Bahamas' popularity, proximity to the U.S. East Coast and the number of ships it can accommodate at one time, most major cruise lines visit the islands there.

You'll mainly find sailings with the "big eight" brands -- Carnival Cruise Line, Celebrity Cruises, Disney Cruise Line, Holland America, MSC Cruises, Norwegian Cruise Line, Princess Cruises and Royal Caribbean.

One unique outlier is Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line, which exclusively operates two-night voyages back and forth between Palm Beach, Florida, and Freeport, Bahamas. The cruise line also partners with a land-based resort, allowing passengers to extend their vacations on land in the Bahamas before returning on the ship several days later.

Additionally, BPCL has joined forces with Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville to offer Margaritaville at Sea cruises , rebranding and renaming its sole ship -- Grand Classica -- to Paradise.

Because of how crowded and frenetic the main Bahamian ports can be, luxury lines tend to stay away. There are a few exceptions, though, such as Lindblad Expeditions. The line operates sailings to some of the Bahamas' Out Islands, which are too tiny for larger, more mainstream vessels to reach.

Things to do in the Bahamas

bahamas paradise cruise and stay

As you would expect from a warm-weather destination, outdoor pursuits are the most popular. Cruise passengers can walk to the nearest beach to sunbathe, swim, snorkel or scuba dive, or book a banana boat, parasailing or party boat excursion.

For fun, affordable souvenirs, shopping abounds at local shops and in Nassau's massive straw market, found on Bay Street. Just make sure you don't buy from the first vendor you see, as many stalls offer the same wares. You might find a cheaper price if you wait or if you bargain for a better deal.

If you're more the gambling type, head to Paradise Island, a quick taxi ride from Nassau, which boasts the famous Atlantis resort. Venture indoors to play table games or try your luck at the slot machines in the resort's casino, or purchase a day pass to use its outdoor pools and water slides.

For fabulous food, ask a local to point you in the direction of their favorite restaurant, and head off the beaten path to try some conch fritters (fried conch meat) and peas with rice. For dessert, don't miss the semi-sweet bread-style Johnny cakes.

Best Bahamas cruise ports

bahamas paradise cruise and stay

The Bahamas has two main cruise ports: Nassau on New Providence Island and Freeport on Grand Bahama Island. Nassau offers plenty to see and do within a short walking distance from the port. However, Freeport requires passengers to book a shore excursion or take a taxi to most attractions.

Other Bahamas stops include Bimini, which is less frequented, and cruise line private islands, which can only be accessed via cruise ship.

Historic Nassau , the capital of the Bahamas, is the cruise industry's most trafficked cruise port. It's bustling and busy, and it can feel overwhelming to travelers visiting for the first time, especially when there are several ships docked at the same time.

But, brightly colored buildings, expansive beaches and ample opportunities for shopping and dining quickly make up for the chaos.

Nassau is also a port teeming with culture. Formerly a haven for pirates, the city is now a history buff's dream, offering easy access to monuments and buildings that were once the stomping grounds of swashbuckling scallywags.

Freeport has a more relaxed vibe than Nassau. The slower pace of Grand Bahama Island, where Freeport is located, lends itself to lazy beach days and casual strolls through town for passengers in search of the perfect souvenir.

Water sports abound, and the clear, bright blue water is exactly what you'd expect from an island paradise.

Unfortunately, Freeport has been hit by several tropical storms and major hurricanes over the years. Although it's a lovely port to visit, you can expect to see reminders, even years later, as construction projects are abandoned and the island struggles to rebuild.

The island chain of Bimini, which is part of the Bahamas, is also home to a cruise port. Fewer ships call there than call at Nassau or Freeport. Apart from beaches and resort-style experiences, there isn't much to do.

The port was thrust into the spotlight when Virgin Voyages developed its Beach Club at Bimini on part of a property operated by Resorts World. When Virgin ships are in port, the only people who have access to the Beach Club are Virgin passengers. Cruisers who call on Bimini with other lines can purchase day passes as long as a Virgin ship is not docked that day.

Private islands

bahamas paradise cruise and stay

Six of the cruise industry's seven private islands are located in the Bahamas. These carefully curated swaths of land can only be visited if you're sailing on a ship that has access.

When you're ashore, you can expect clean facilities, pristine beaches, shopping opportunities, free buffet lunches (usually barbecue) and a variety of carefully controlled water-sports-centric shore excursions. Some of the larger, more developed private islands also boast water parks, horseback riding, zip lines and pools.

Private cabanas, villas and bungalows are also offered, but they come at a premium and usually book up quickly. Some are even reserved for cruisers booked in suite accommodations on their ships.

When to book a Bahamas cruise

bahamas paradise cruise and stay

Since the Bahamas is a year-round destination and lots of ships call there, supply is plentiful. That means prices tend to be more affordable, particularly for shorter Bahamas-only voyages.

For additional savings, consider booking your sailing in the first quarter of each year during " wave season ," when cruise lines offer fare discounts and other added-value perks like free Wi-Fi and beverage packages, discounted airfare or onboard credit for things like spa treatments, shore excursions or dining in extra-fee restaurants. Also keep an eye out for Black Friday deals toward the end of each year.

You might also be able to take advantage of resident rates (if you live in Florida), military discounts or kids sail free promotions.

What to bring on a Bahamas cruise

bahamas paradise cruise and stay

Wondering what to pack ? For any cruise, you can't go wrong with resort-casual clothing and something for formal night if you'd like to participate. You'll also need underwear, toiletries, pajamas and footwear, as well as any travel documents required to board and clear immigration and customs.

For the Bahamas specifically, you'll want to prepare for warm, sunny weather by bringing a bathing suit and cover-up; flip-flops or sandals; and sunglasses, a hat and sunscreen to protect yourself during time outdoors. For those not heading to the beach, sundresses or shorts with T-shirts or tank tops are suitable attire.

If you plan to shop while ashore, most places do accept credit cards, but you might want to bring cash. U.S. dollars are accepted in the Bahamas, so there's no need to exchange currency.

Bottom line

bahamas paradise cruise and stay

If you cruise, it's almost certain you'll visit the Bahamas at some point in your travels. Although it can be crowded, the experience is an enjoyable one.

If you're looking for a fun warm-weather destination that offers plenty of beach time, active diversions, history and culture, shopping, gambling and excellent food, you won't be disappointed with a call on this popular cruise region.

Margaritaville at Sea fleet

Margaritaville islander, margaritaville paradise, review of margaritaville at sea.

Margaritaville at Sea is a new travel brand and cruise line (2023-founded/2024-inaugurated) that specializes in voyages from Florida USA to The Bahamas the whole year round. The company operates via a long-term partnership with Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line (shipowner) which two ships are chartered and branded as "Margaritaville at Sea".

Margaritaville at Sea logo (Margaritaville Cruise Line Bahamas) CruiseMapper

The Margaritaville Cruise Line is separately owned and not a subsidiary of Jimmy Buffett's Margaritaville (1985-founded, USA-based hospitality company that manages and franchises a restaurant chain, retail stores, and hotels).

Margaritaville At Sea

In early-December 2021 was announced that Margaritaville Resorts & Hotels (Florida-based hospitality group) signed a partnership deal with the shipowner Paradise Cruise Line Operator Ltd to start a new cruise brand (Margaritaville at Sea) to be inaugurated with Grand Classica in 2022. The ship (renamed "Margaritaville Paradise") was scheduled to start service for "Margaritaville at Sea" with the Maiden Voyage on April 30, 2022, following an extensive wetdock refit at Grand Bahama Shipyard (Freeport).

  • The Margaritaville cruise line is expected to add more ships to its future fleet, with Margaritaville Paradise being the first one.
  • The deal was signed by John Cohlan (Margaritaville's CEO) and Oneil Khosa (Bahamas Paradise's CEO, who will also serve as Margaritaville Cruise Line's CEO).
  • Margaritaville Paradise continues the regular 2-night cruise schedule from Palm Beach to Freeport. The shipowner remains the same (Paradise Cruise Line Operator Ltd).
  • After supply chain disruptions affected the ship's wetdocking, Margaritaville at Sea brand's inauguration was postponed by two weeks (from April 30th to May 13th, 2022).

On October 16, 2023, Carnival Corporation (as shipowner) officially confirmed the sale of the 23-year-old Costa Atlantica (through its subsidiary Adora Cruises Ltd ) valued at USD 64,6 million (~EUR 61M). The new shipowner (yet to be revealed) will charter the vessel to Margaritaville at Sea/Bahamas Paradise which will operate it under the new name "Margaritaville at Sea Islander" ( Margaritaville Islander ).

On December 4, 2023, the company confirmed that Costa Atlantica officially joined the fleet (under the name "Margaritaville At Sea Islander") and is scheduled to start Caribbean voyages leaving roundtrip from Tampa Florida on June 14, 2024 (Maiden Voyage).

Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line

Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line (bahamasparadisecruise.com) is a travel brand owned by the Bahamas-based company "Paradise Cruise Line Operator Ltd", that changed ownership on December 22, 2016. Among the new company's owners is Kevin Sheehan - former CEO and President of NCLH ("Norwegian Cruise Line Holdings"), who resigned NCL in January 2015.

The company is the successor of the Imperial Majesty Cruise Line (1999-founded/2009-defunct). Imperial Majesty Cruise Line was a budget travel company and specialized in mini-cruises (2-3-day roundtrips from Port Everglades) to Nassau . The company owned one ship (Regal Empress, IMO 5262835, 1953-built/2009-scrapped) and officially ceased operation on March 9, 2009. In the same week, its shipping business/schedule was replaced by Celebration Cruise Line (Bahamas Paradise).

The company's current CCO (since 2021) is Francis Riley (former employee of Thomas Cook UK, British Airways' Avios Group Ltd, NCL-Norwegian , Tourico Holidays, EMEA Recruitment, Traveltek). In mid-November 2020 was unofficially announced that the ship Grand Celebration had been sold for scrap metal (for an undisclosed sale price). The vessel left Freeport Bahamas on November 15th, allegedly heading to India's Alang Shipbreaking Yard (world's largest), with estimated arrival on January 3rd, 2021. On January 2nd, the 34-year-old liner arrived and anchored off Alang, and on January 14th was beached for scrapping.

As the only cruise shipping company operating roundtrips out of Palm Beach Florida , Bahamas Paradise provides its customers with expedited boarding (30-min embarkation/disembarkation) and valet parking (at the cruise terminal).

  • Cruise passengers are also offered Bahamas "cruise and hotel" packages in Bahamian hotels. These deals offer 2-, 4-, and 6-night Bahamas hotel stays to be combined (booked together) with Palm Beach roundtrip voyages.
  • MS Grand Celebration ship is a former Carnival Cruise Lines vessel and operated under charter (leased), while the fleet-mate MS Grand Classica (former Costa neoClassica is fully-owned. Classica was purchased in December 2017 and entered service in April 2018.
  • In 2017, the company had booked around 250,000 passengers, around half of whom were from South Florida.
  • MS Grand Classica was opened for booking in February 2018. The company's promos were "Buy One - Get One Free". These free cruise deals were limited to 1 week only, and bookable on both liners.
  • "Sail Away Your Way" promo deals offered free cruising for kids 12-year-old and under (when traveling with 2 full-paying guests) and free entertainment for adults. The promo offer was valid for cruises through February 12, 2019, if these deals were booked by December 12, 2018. USD 25 pp bonuses were additionally offered as either casino credit, spa credit, photo credit or onboard credit (to be used for drinks, dining or shore excursions).

The regularly scheduled Florida-Bahamas short-breaks are very popular among both American and Bahamian citizens as they provide a cheap shopping travel alternative. Bahamas Paradise estimated that these tourists spend ~USD 4,5 million annually.

Port West Palm Beach (Florida) cruise port

From both ships, Port Palm Beach projected between USD 54-63 million in net income over a period of 10 years (2018-2028), depending on the handled passengers' number. The liners' combined passenger capacity is nearly 1,3 million per year. The company's monthly dockage fees (for both ships) are USD 50,000.

In early-February 2019, the company started offering (upon request) 6 new themed-food menus (2x Chinese, 2x Indian, 2x Vegan cuisine specialties) available for groups fleetwide and year-round. The new Chinese menus include Sichuan Eggplant, Hunan Style Crispy Whole Red Snapper, Crispy Tangerine Beef. Vegan dishes include Coconut Soup, Crispy Hearts of Palm Cakes, Caramelized Parsnip, Zucchini Lasagna, Potato-Mushroom Burgers. Indian dishes include Tandoori Chicken, Pan-seared Prawns, Paneer Tikki Masala, Kheer and Warm Gajar Halwa (pudding). The new menus are also available for individual request (must be made in advance upon booking or onboard / at ship's Reception).

Also in June 2018, the company dropped its single supplements on all oceanview staterooms. The decision was based on Booking.com studies on solo travel showing over 40% baby boomers booking solo cruises in 2017, and 21% planning single cruise travel in 2018. No single supplement daily cruise rates start at USD 149 per person.

In September 2018, the company signed a partnership deal with Fit Bodies Inc, providing passengers aged 16 and older with free workout classes (Zumba, Yoga, and fitness) led by certified instructors. The new program was introduced on Grand Celebration (Sept 2018) and on Grand Classica (since January 2019).

(Coronavirus crisis) passenger shipping pause 2020-2021

Due to the COVID pandemic, Bahamas Paradise suspended its fleet's passenger shipping operations (both vessels) by canceling all voyages with pre-scheduled departures between March 15, 2020, and May 31, 2021.

Grand Classica ship was planned to restart mini-cruises to Grand Bahama Island (Freeport) on December 18, 2020. Grand Celebration ship was scheduled to restart voyages to Bahamas (Nassau) on March 3, 2021. However, these plans were canceled and both vessels remained out of service, and later Grand Celebration was scrapped .

Bahamas Paradise ships were intended to operate at 60% max passenger capacity , by closing two cabin decks on each liner. All affected bookings received a full (100%) monetary refund, including on prepurchased through the cruise company packages and services. A 125% refund in FCC (future cruise credit) was given with rebooking.

The company resumed the USA-Bahamas service on July 8, 2021, with Grand Classica.

Itinerary of Margaritaville at Sea

In May 2018, Grand Classica (fka Costa neoClassica/now Margaritaville Paradise) joined MS Grand Celebration as the second ship in the fleet of the Florida-based company "Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line". At the end of August 2017, Port Palm Beach District Commission signed a 10-year agreement for the former Costa cruise ship, to service the Florida-Bahamas route West Palm Beach - Freeport .

Margaritaville Paradise has a regularly scheduled itinerary program of 3-day / 2-night Bahamas cruises to Freeport and back to Palm Beach FL.

On December 4, 2023, the company confirmed that the former Costa Atlantica (2000-built/23-year-old) officially joined the fleet (being chartered as "Margaritaville At Sea Islander"). Starting in June 2024 (inaugural cruise date June 14th), Margaritaville Islander is scheduled for Caribbean voyages leaving roundtrip from Tampa Florida . MAS Islander's itinerary program is based on year-round homeporting in Port Tampa Bay and 4-night and 5-night cruises visiting Key West (Florida) and Mexico's ports Cozumel  and  Progreso/Merida .

On April 26, 2024, Margaritaville at Sea opened for booking MAS Paradise ship's 4-night voyages visiting Key West (Florida) and Freeport (Grand Bahama). The schedule listed departure dates in September through December 2024. Fares started at US$169 per person with double occupancy. Leaving on Mondays and returning on Fridays, the company listed as available dates September 16-20, September 30-October 4, October 14-18, November 25-29, and December 9-13.

In 2017, Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line signed with The Bahamas a 3-year deal (until 2020) to bring both vessels (Celebration and Classica) to Grand Bahama Island on 2-night itineraries. With both ships, the company now has an annual passenger shipping capacity of 0,5+ million.

Grand Celebration itinerary program was based on 2-night / 3-day Bahamas cruises leaving from Palm Beach (Riviera Beach) Florida . The ship offered mini-cruises to Bahamas ( Freeport ) 3 or 4 times a week. Sadly, in January 2021 the vessel was beached and scrapped at Alang India .

Since Hurricane Matthew (September-October 2016) damaged Freeport, the Grand Celebration was diverted to Bimini Islands but resumed calling on Freeport on January 3, 2017.

Port Palm Beach receives around USD 4 million a year from the ship in port fees and cruise parking. Port commissioners signed the agreement with the new shipowner (Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line) on December 15, 2016. With LOA length 223 m (733 ft), MS Grand Celebration is the max size the Palm Beach port can handle. The fleet-mate MS Grand Classica's length is 220 m (722 ft).

2-night / 3-day Bahamas cruise itinerary

  • Day 1 (embarkation at Port Palm Beach Florida USA) - check-in at 11 a.m., ship boarding at 12 noon. Passengers must be on the ship by 4 pm. Departure is at 5:30 pm.
  • Day 2 (Grand Bahama Island, Bahamas) - arrival in Freeport is at 8 am. Departure from Freeport is at 5 pm. Passengers must be back on the ship by 4:30 pm.
  • Day 3 (disembarkation in Port Palm Beach) - arrival back to port is at 7 am. Disembarkation of passengers is between 8-10:30 am.

Loved This Trip!

Posted by Rebecca on Jan 29th 2019

I took this trip with a few friends over the holidays. We had a blast!! The cruise was great (especially the live show). The cabins are typical cruise cabins and the ship itself offers standard cruise ship amenities. The Viva Wyndham Fortuna was great! The all-inclusive feature is the way to go. The food is good but nothing fancy and the drinks are unlimited. They also offered great activities that were also free, such as kayaks, canoe, snorkeling and even free dive lessons. The rooms are basic hotel rooms that have been recently renovated. The beach is GORGEOUS!! I will be going back, soon!

Very nice for the price.

Posted by Marc C on Sep 1st 2018

The Good: Absolutely beautiful beach with plenty of chairs and spread out far enough to have privacy. While not included, our room had a very strong WiFi signal. Plenty of included activities on the property and rarely a line or wait time. The food was good and had a nice variety, more than adequate for the price paid. Certain members of the staff went out of their way to make you comfortable, for instance Monique made my wife lemonade and hot pepper oil when she saw the disappointment on her face when she told us those item were not available. Briannosso from Lexus Tours (a 3rd party) was so incredibly honest when I asked very direct questions about the resort and tours which made us very comfortable and want to spend our money. We took the Jeep convoy and glass bottom boat trips and both were fantastic. The Bad or Flat-out Odd: We we’re allowed two guaranteed restaurant reservations for the on premises gourmet restaurants with our four day stay. You could ask for additional reservations if space permitted. Night three we asked for a reservation and were told that “an 8:30 had cancelled and we were very lucky.” When we went, the place was 2/3 empty, as had the two previous places were when we had guaranteed spots. The fourth night we were told the places were entirely booked, which was odd so we walked over after 8 to see the half empty place we wanted to go to but was “fully booked.” On another occasion I advised the representative at the counter that the WiFi was down, before I was finished she cut me off “WiFi is not promised in the rooms, use the lobby.” I informed her that we had been there three days with a great signal, streaming video, and today there was zero signal. She told me that the signal strengths varies. Varies between perfect and absolutely nothing. That’s when I advised her that the on premises stores also had no WiFi and were manually writing down their sales and pulling off barcodes to scan later. She then said “Oh, ok I’ll make a call.” These two instances bothered me, not because I couldn’t have what I was requesting but because they were clearly, intentionally being less than honest. There was a huge variance among the staff in who was truly there to help and those who hated their lives and just wanted a pay check. Furthermore, the two times we requested house keeping....they took our dirty towels early in the morning, but by the time we returned from the beach in late afternoon, the room still was not cleaned and no new towels! So we couldn’t even use the old towels to shower. When I called the front desk and asked for housekeeping the rep said “I bet you need towels” she was very nice and called a half hour later to make sure we got them but clearly they are aware this is an issue.

Cruise & Stay: The Bahamas

Do you know the difference between an ocean liner and a cruise ship? Before air travel became the preferred method of spanning the globe, getting from say London to New York was easiest on board an ocean liner. These ships didn’t meander around leisurely from port to port like a cruise ship, they straight-lined it from point A to point B and back again. Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line is paying homage to those early days of cruising with a new cruise and stay itinerary in the Bahamas. Passengers take the cruise one way from the Port of Palm Beach to Grand Bahama Island, stay two or four nights at one of their partner resorts on the island and then cruise back to the Port of Palm beach on board one of the cruise line’s ships.

Too Busy for Vacation?

Oneil Khosa, CEO of Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line, explained what went into the decision to add cruise and stay packages to their itineraries.

“We are the only cruise line in the industry that can offer this unique cruise & stay vacation experience and believe it gives consumers as well as our travel partners another reason to choose Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line,” she said. “With our daily departures from the Port of Palm Beach, our Cruise & Stay packages are easily tailored to fit into traveler’s busy schedules and ultimately provide a perfect getaway option.”

Bahamas Paradise

Viva Wyndham Fortuna Beach

There isn’t a one-size-fits-all vacation option with this deal. Passengers have the option to stay in an all-inclusive resort property that includes food and beverages like the Viva Wyndham Fortuna Beach or Lighthouse Pointe at Grand Lucayan, or they can opt for a hotel only plan at the Pelican Bay Hotel or the Marlin at Taino Bay. There is no one-size-fits-all vacation option.

About the Ships

Bahamas Paradise Cruise Line operates two ships, Grand Classica and Grand Celebration , featuring Vegas-style shows in the theater, live music, comedians and more. The newly renovated Par-A-Dice casino is also a favorite among cruisers, featuring a variety of slot machines and table games, as well as free lessons for amateur players to enjoy. Both ships are also home to full-service spas for treatments, pool deck games led by an energetic entertainment team, interactive kids’ programs, sail away shows and parties.

This Island in the Bahamas Is the Easiest to Get to From the East Coast — and Has One of the Country's Best Hotels

Paradise is just a short plane ride away.

bahamas paradise cruise and stay

More often than not, luxurious Bahamian and Caribbean vacations involve multiple forms of transportation — most likely a regular commercial plane, followed by a puddle jumper, a ferry or boat, and then a taxi ride. Once you’ve made it to your destination, though, all of the effort to get there is worth it; you’ve arrived on a remote island with turquoise water in every direction.

But sometimes, that type of getaway doesn’t align with your schedule — or paid time off. While some islands are easier to get to than others, especially if you’re traveling from the East Coast, you’ll probably have to account for a full day of travel in both directions. There’s one not-so-secret island in the Bahamas, however, that combines the best of both worlds, thanks to one of the best resorts in the Caribbean, as voted by T+L readers in the 2023 World’s Best Awards .

The chances you’ve heard of Paradise Island are high; it’s most commonly associated with the family-friendly, ocean-themed resort Atlantis Paradise Island . It’s also incredibly easy to get to. Most travelers fly directly into Nassau’s Lynden Pindling International Airport (NAS), the Bahamas’ largest airport, and it’s a short drive across a one-way bridge to Paradise Island. In total, the flight typically takes around about three hours from New York City, one hour from Miami, and a little over two hours from Charlotte, North Carolina. The drive from NAS to Paradise Island is just half an hour. Without spending your entire day in transit, you’ll quickly find yourself on the beach, cocktail in hand, feeling completely relaxed.

The convenience is key, but if you also want the aforementioned secluded, remote experience, you’ll want to book a stay at The Ocean Club, A Four Seasons Resort . It may be just down the road from the expansive Atlantis Paradise Island, but once you step foot on the property — and become entranced by the palm trees, history, and understated glamour — you’ll feel worlds away from any crowds, airports, or stresses of everyday life.

Courtesy of Four Seasons

Part of that comes from its unrivaled location on Cabbage Beach. “The resort sits on a 36-acre estate with a prized beach position that is beyond breathtaking and looks out to a wide-open ocean,” says John Conway, the resort’s general manager. Spending the entire day on the beachfront chaise lounges or by the infinity pool is possible — and highly encouraged — but there’s plenty more to discover across the property. “What guests don’t expect on the estate is the Versailles Gardens that truly set us apart from other hotels in the Bahamas, and really anywhere else in the Caribbean,” says Conway. Stroll out of any of the 107 rooms and suites and find yourself among what Conway describes as a “visually striking” scene of 12th-century Augustinian cloisters and sculptures, all framed by bright, photo-ready bougainvillea.

Aside from The Ocean Club’s outdoor access and atmosphere, there’s an intoxicating mystique and association with Hollywood that envelops the common spaces — from the lobby, where you’ll catch a glimpse of the ocean through the open doors, to the Jean-Georges Vongerichten-affiliated Dune restaurant and sophisticated Martini Bar and Lounge, decorated with black and white images of well-known guests (The Beatles, Cindy Crawford, and Zsa Zsa Gabor, among them). At the latter, be sure to order a Vesper Martini in honor of the 2006 James Bond film "Casino Royale," which was filmed on the property.

Conway says the team aims to curate a “warm and casually elegant … and relaxed, yet refined, environment” at The Ocean Club. Through its unparalleled oceanfront position, its well-appointed, airy rooms, and its dedication to creating a tranquil, relaxing getaway, the bucket-list resort achieves just that — and it’s only a short plane ride away from most major East Coast cities.

More Places to Stay Nearby

Rosewood Baha Mar: Compared to The Ocean Club and Goldwynn Resort & Residences, Rosewood Baha Mar is better suited for families — or those traveling with children — looking for a quick getaway from the East Coast. With two pools, exclusive beach access, and 226 rooms, suites, and beachfront villas, there’s plenty of room to find some Bahamian relaxation.

Goldwynn Resort & Residences: Opened in early 2023, Goldwynn Resort & Residences is even closer to the Nassau airport; it’s just 10 minutes from door to door. The 81-room hotel ensures guests have plenty of privacy, whether they’re relaxing in one of the oceanfront studies, complete with a kitchenette, or in a personal cabana overlooking Cable Beach.

Margaritaville at Sea passenger files lawsuit saying she was raped in Bahamas hotel

  • A passenger on a Margaritaville at Sea cruise is suing the cruise line’s parent company Classica Cruise Operator claiming she was sexually assaulted by an employee of the hotel booked by the company.
  • The hotel has a history of sexual assault allegations, and the cruise line was liable to warn about and protect passengers from the hotel’s “dangerous conditions,” said the lawsuit.

A Margaritaville at Sea passenger is suing the cruise line’s parent company Classica Cruise Operator claiming she was sexually assaulted by an employee of the hotel booked by the company, according to the lawsuit filed last week.

The hotel has a history of sexual assault allegations, and the cruise line was liable to warn about and protect passengers from the hotel’s “dangerous conditions,” said the lawsuit, which was filed in the U.S. District Court for the Southern District of Florida.

“We want to make people aware,” Alex Perez, the passenger’s attorney from the maritime and admiralty law firm Lipcon, Margulies & Winkleman, P.A., told USA TODAY. “These things happen in foreign ports. I know you’re on vacation but you have to be careful. This can help people make informed decisions.”

The passenger, named “Jane Doe” in the case, is a Missouri resident who went on a two-day cruise from West Palm Beach, Florida, to the Bahamas and back in August 2023.

According to the complaint, Classica had arranged for the passenger to stay at the Viva Fortuna Beach by Wyndham, located in Freeport in the Bahamas because the ship did not have cabins available for her.

The lawsuit states that the passenger left her room at night to get water when an employee forced her into the control room of the resort’s theatre, locked the door and raped her.

This isn’t the first allegation of rape at the Viva Fortuna Beach by Wyndham. In 2016, a TripAdvisor user who went to the resort to get married wrote a review saying she was gang raped by staff when a security officer opened her door while her husband was out. The general manager had responded to the review by saying the resort takes “allegations of violence very seriously.” The investigation hit a dead-end when no evidence was found.

Resort employees have a “practice” of encouraging alcohol to the guests “with a motive to sexually assault and/or rape them if they became vulnerable,” according to the complaint.

“Prior to the subject incident, (Classica and Wyndham) knew or should have known that the resort was not reasonably safe and/or employees at the Resort had a proclivity for sexual misconduct,” the lawsuit said. However, Classica neglected to warn the passenger or provide her with security during her stay there.

Margaritaville at Sea and Wyndham Hotels & Resorts did not respond to USA TODAY’s request for comment.

Jane Doe is suing the resort for damages for the physical injuries and pain, post-traumatic stress disorder, “mental anguish,” “loss of enjoyment of life” and medical expenses among other things she experienced from the assault.

The lawsuit will help “prevent any of this happening to anyone else,” Perez said. “That’s step No. 1. I’m not here to make the cruise lines look like the bad guy. I have a sister, a mother, there’s women in my life, and I don’t want anything like this to happen to someone.”

This is the latest in a string of sexual assault incidents involving Margaritaville at Sea Cruises. Last year, two women aboard the Margaritaville at Sea Paradise cruise ship said they were raped by a bartender who snuck into their room at night, ultimately impregnating one.

Margaritaville cruise settles 2 lawsuits after bartender snuck into women's room, raped them

Two passengers aboard the margaritaville at sea paradise cruise ship accused an employee of sneaking into their room and raping them while they slept..

bahamas paradise cruise and stay

WEST PALM BEACH — Two women who said they were raped by a bartender on a Jimmy Buffett-themed cruise ship have agreed to settle their lawsuits against the company for undisclosed amounts of money.

They accused a crewmate of sneaking into their room aboard the  Margaritaville At Sea Paradise ship and raping them while they slept. One woman, identified in a December lawsuit only as Jane Doe, said she became pregnant as a result and "was forced to terminate the pregnancy, from which she then suffered serious complications."

Her cabinmate, identified in a separate lawsuit as HB, said bartender Hoobesh Dookhy pocketed one of their room keys while serving the women drinks aboard the Bahamas-bound ship and used it to enter their room after both women fell asleep.

Doe said she woke to find Dookhy caressing her face and  sexually assaulting her . She told FBI agents that she demanded he leave, but he moved to HB's bed and began to assault her, too.

Doe recorded the assault and reported it to cruise-ship security the following morning. According to court records, investigators found the women's room key in the pocket of Dookhy's work vest and a photo he took of HB, naked and asleep, on his cellphone.

Bartender's conviction: Server aboard Margaritaville cruise ship pleads guilty to sexually assaulting passenger

Margaritaville At Sea Paradise bartender got two-year prison sentence, must register as sex offender

Dookhy admitted to having sex with HB but told investigators that their encounter was consensual. Faced with the possibility of life in federal prison on a sexual-abuse charge, he pleaded guilty to one count of abusive sexual contact in October — forgoing his right to a trial by jury but cementing a deal with prosecutors to have the worst of the two charges against him dropped.

U.S. District Judge Aileen Cannon sentenced Dookhy to two years in prison — one year more than federal sentencing guidelines advised and exactly what prosecutors asked for. He is scheduled to be released before his 28th birthday. According to court records, he will remain on supervised release for five years and must register as a sex offender.

Neither charge against him stemmed from the rape Doe described in her lawsuit. She was classified as a witness to her cabinmate's sexual assault rather than as a victim to her own, but her attorney, Spencer Aronfeld, said Dookhy's conviction and the subsequent media attention surrounding HB's lawsuit convincedher to file one, too.

"We reached an amicable resolution," Aronfeld said this month. "She's pleased with the result."

Aronfeld said that as part of the agreement, Doe "can't tell her story to anyone." He declined to say more about the confidential settlement but added that, generally speaking, no amount of money can heal the wounds of sexual assault victims. He said the value of a settlement is in closing the case and allowing victims to move forward.

Sexual assault on the high seas: How to keep you and your family safe on vacation cruises

HB's attorney, Carissa Peebles of the law firm Morgan & Morgan, declined to comment, and Aronfeld said he did not know whether her settlement was identical to Doe's. In an earlier interview, Aronfeld called the two lawsuits "considerably different" in terms of the damages reported by both women — the most notable being Doe's pregnancy and abortion.

During the earlier interview, Aronfeld said his client did not undergo a paternity test to determine who fathered the child but said Doe intended to testify that she and her husband were not sexually active before or after the alleged rape.

Missouri woman latest to file sexual-assault lawsuit against cruise line's owner

Doe and HB belong to a long list of passengers and crew members who say they were victimized aboard cruise ships. More than 500 sexual-assault reports were documented between 2010 and 2022 on 13 major cruise lines, according to data published by the U.S. Department of Transportation.

A Missourian woman, identified only as Jane Doe, filed a new lawsuit against the Margaritaville at Sea cruise and its parent company Classica Cruise this month. She said Margaritaville arranged for a sea-side hotel in the Bahamas for guests to stay. According to the lawsuit, when she left her hotel room at night to get a glass of water, a hotel employee forced her into the hotel's theater control room, locked the door and raped her.

She is suing the hotel in addition to the cruise line. The alleged rape happened in August 2023. Margaritaville at Sea did not return a request for comment.

The Nassau Cruise Port: Travel Tips and Things To Do

T he Bahamas is an extremely popular travel destination in the West Atlantic Ocean. The relatively small tropical paradise borders Haiti, Cuba, the United States and Turks and Caicos. The capital city of the Bahamas, Nassau is located on New Providence Island and is a tourism hub. Nassau has established itself as a thriving cultural center and well known cruise ship stop. The destination is popular for its gorgeous white sand beaches and overall naturally beautiful landscape, which is perfect for water sports and waterside relaxation. The pristine coral reef and the possibility of exciting close encounters with marine life are some of the reasons Nassau is a great place to visit.

Due to Nassau’s highly frequented dock, visitors may be under a time limit if they travel by boat or have to deal with crowds during port days. While many tourists only get to enjoy Nassau’s unique offerings during short periods of time, there are ways to best utilize time in the capital city. So, we have compiled some insightful information about the destination and how travelers can make the most of their trip, whether they are cruisers or looking to have a long term stay near the Nassau Cruise Port (NCP) .

Is the Nassau Cruise Port Popular?

Nassau’s cruise port is one of the most popular ports in the world. Each year it attracts nearly 4 million cruise passengers . The port even recently (the first phase opened to the public in 2023) underwent a redevelopment, which has contributed to its popularity and overall appeal. These improvements include the construction of many new buildings which have been strategically planned and placed to improve the flow of traffic.

The taxi dispatch center and optimized shopping strip are just some of the upgrades that lead into downtown Nassau. Ports with the latest accommodations and high quality attractions certainly reap the benefits of modernization, since more tourists consider the site to be much more welcoming and safe.

What Cruise Lines Dock at Nassau’s Cruise Port?

The cruise port has the capacity to accommodate six cruise ships a day. This includes three oasis class or icon class vessels. The larger icon class ships hold more passengers (and are usually taller and longer) while oasis class ships are typically wider with more features. The increased tourist capacity is due to the ports’ expanded waterfront, which was completed through a $300 million dollar project.

Travelers have plenty of options since there is an array of cruise lines that dock at this Nassau port. The Carnival, Celebrity, Disney, Princess, Royal Caribbean, Virgin Voyages, Norwegian, Regent Seven Seas, Oceania, MSC, Holland America, Azamara and Fred Olsen cruise lines stop in Nassau.

Things To Do in Nassau, Bahamas

There are plenty of things to do near the popular Nassau Cruise Port. Some of the most popular tours include rum tasting experiences, sunset cruises and jet skiing. Both sunset cruises and jet skiing offer visitors of the Bahamas stellar views of the crystal clear waters. Rum tasting is a popular tour in Nassau due to the historical and cultural information that travelers can learn by sampling authentic Bahamian rum and learning from locals.

Other travelers that prefer self-led exploration may enjoy the Pirates of Nassau Museum, Ardastra Gardens & Wildlife Conservation Centre or National Art Gallery of the Bahamas. These sites highlight the environmental, cultural and historical significance of Nassau and are top attractions of the area.

There are a few outdoor attractions that are considered top experiences in Nassau. Travelers can swim with island pigs, which has become a very adorable and picturesque experience. The crystal clear waters of the Bahamas adds to the tranquil and playful nature of the cute pigs that roam the island. Jaw’s Beach is one of the highest rated waterside sites for snorkeling and soaking in the sun. This beach is less crowded and visitors may even be lucky enough to witness marine life like the sea turtle and manta ray.

Transportation

Lynden Pindling International Airport (LPIA) is only a few miles away from the port. Even travelers that are unfamiliar with the island should not have trouble flying in and getting a ride to their accomodation. Taxis are the most common mode of transportation for the tourist friendly city.

Since many visitors come from cruises that are docked there, many visiting travelers use taxis to get around the port. There is high traffic near the port, so there are many taxis available in the area. The taxi rates are set, so although travelers may notice prices vary by their particular destination they are unlikely to run into drivers that overcharge. For cruise passengers, it may be more affordable to secure transportation with the company that any tours are booked with. This ensures that they will not have to deal with additional stress and can simply sit back and relax.

There are also buses that are locally known as jitneys and are a popular form of public transportation. But riding the bus to and from excursions means that travelers will have to depend on the bus stop schedule and routes. For some, this lack of autonomy may be less than appealing so travelers should be sure that their itinerary can handle standardized traveling times and differing rates depending on the destination.
