Apple issues Safari update for macOS Catalina and macOS Mojave

AppleInsider Staff's Avatar

Last updated 2 years ago

Apple is currently pushing out the latest Safari iteration to users of macOS Catalina and macOS Mojave, though the company failed to detail the update's contents in accompanying release notes.

Safari 14.1.2 is listed on an Apple security update support document , however, suggesting the new version contains important bug fixes and security enhancements that typically accompany operating system point releases.

Apple on Monday issued iOS 14.7 , tvOS 14.7 and watchOS 7.6 to the public on Monday following weeks of beta testing.

Along with new features, like MagSafe Battery Pack support and Apple Card Family upgrades on iOS, the latest round of updates include a number of bug fixes and security patches. Apple has yet to publish details on the security enhancements, but is expected to do so later today.

All new operating system versions are currently being pushed through Apple's software update delivery system, while Safari 14.1.2 can be downloaded by navigating to Software Update in System Preferences.

Apple Pulls, Re-Releases Safari 14.1 to Fix Security Issues and Browsing Bugs the Update Introduced

Reportedly, Safari 14.1 caused access problems for sites like eBay

  • Safari 14.1 fixes two WebKit issues with new update
  • Apple first released Safari 14.1 on April 26, pulled it few days later
  • The update was causing random issues with browsing

Apple has released a new Safari 14.1 update for macOS Catalina and macOS Mojave users after pulling it just a few days ago, due to several reported issues. Apple first started rolling out Safari 14.1 on April 26, to fix browser fixes security vulnerabilities in WebKit, but this reportedly caused several browsing issues in both Safari and other browsers. As a result, Apple then pulled the update on May 1, and has now started the rollout again, still under the version number 14.1.

Apple announced the recommencement of Safari 14.1 rollout with two WebKit fixes for macOS Catalina and macOS Mojave users. After installing this update, the build number for Safari 14.1 is 15611.1.21.161.7 on macOS Catalina and 14611.1.21.161.7 on macOS Mojave. The two issues that have been fixed include an integer overflow problem that processed maliciously crafted web content that could potentially lead to arbitrary code execution. This issue was addressed with improved input validation. The other was a memory corruption issue that could also lead to arbitrary code execution. This was addressed with improved state management.

  • How to Customise the Safari Start Page in macOS Big Sur

According to the support page, the rollout of Safari 14.1 was started again on May 4, for macOS Catalina and macOS Mojave. For users on Big Sur, macOS 11.3.1 was released on May 3, and also contains updates that resolve these WebKit vulnerabilities so users should update their OS as soon as possible.

Safari update caused random issues with browsing

When the update first rolled out it caused problems for many users who took to Apple Support Communities complaining of issues cropping up after updating to Safari 14.1 released on April 26 . One user reported that the new version breaks functionality on popular websites like eBay. Several other sites were also constantly failing to load pages and were throwing out repeated requests to reload.

Kaspersky antivirus is banned, so you should try one of these 3 alternatives, these features make the chatgpt desktop app better than the website.

If you have an older Mac running macOS Mojave or Catalina, you're recommended to download Safari 14.1 to strengthen your computer's security and protect your privacy.

Safari 14.1 Fixes Three WebKit Vulnerabilities

That's because the new Safari 14.1 patches WebKit vulnerabilities that permit bad actors to execute rogue code on your computer without user consent. WebKit is a layout engine used by Apple's own Safari browser and all third-party browsers on the iPhone and iPad.

The flaws are detailed in a support document on Apple's website .

There are three major vulnerabilities that Safari 14.1 patches, spanning WebKit, WebKit Storage, and WebKit RTC. In WebKit, Apple has addressed an input validation issue with improved input validation. This vulnerability let attackers craft malicious web content which could result in a cross-site scripting attack. This is a technique which enables malicious people to inject client-side scripts into web pages viewed by other users.

The WebKit Storage flaw allowed hackers to execute arbitrary code on a user’s device without consent via maliciously crafted web content. According to the company, "a use after free issue was addressed with improved memory management" in WebKit Storage.

The company has acknowledged that this particular flaw may have been actively exploited in the wild. Therefore, it's definitely a good idea to update to Safari 14.1 on your older Mac running the macOS Mojave or Catalina software. To do so, launch the System Preferences app and choose Software Update from the System Preferences window, then follow the onscreen instructions to download and install Safari 14.1.

Are Other Apple Devices at Risk?

The company has recently fixed WebKit security breaches on its other platforms. With the release of iOS and iPadOS 14.5.1, Apple patched the WebKit flaws on the iPhone, iPod touch, and iPad . On the Mac, the same issues were addressed with macOS Bug Sur 11.3.1.

And last but not least, Apple has also released iOS 12.5.3 which patches the WebKit flaws on older devices that are incompatible with the latest iOS 14 software, including the iPhone 5s and iPhone 6, iPad Air, iPad mini 2, iPad mini 3, and sixth-generation iPod touch.

Safari 14.1 Adds WebM, Date & Time Inputs, Web Speech, and More

Andrew Orr

Safari 14.1 for macOS Big Sur, iPadOS 14.5, and iOS 14.5 brings new WebKit features, APIs, and more for web developers. The full announcement can be read here but here are a few that may be more noticeable for end users.

Safari 14.1 Features

  • Date & Time Inputs for Mac – In HTML, the date, time, datetime-local attributes for the input element prompt the browser to create date and/or time controls — an interface that’s designed to let the user easily enter a time or a date, usually with a calendar.
  • Web Speech API – Now, Safari supports speech recognition powered by the same speech engine as Siri. That means web developers can enjoy the benefits of high-quality transcription for over 50 languages and dialects.
  • WebM Support – WebKit added improved support for WebM media. Initial support began in Safari 12.1 with support for VP8 in WebM in the context of WebRTC only. With Safari 14, WebKit added support for WebM via MSE. Now, WebKit supports WebM files containing VP8 or VP9 video tracks and Vorbis audio tracks.
  • Private Click Measuremen t – This release features Private Click Measurement – a proposed web standard that enables advertisers to measure the effectiveness of click-through ad campaigns in a privacy-preserving way. This new technology is part of a larger effort to remove cross-site tracking from the web and provide privacy-preserving alternatives where needed.

These improvements are available to users running Safari on iPadOS 14.5, iOS 14.5, or Safari 14.1 on macOS Big Sur (11.3), macOS Catalina, or macOS Mojave.

It's just HTML coding, a bunch of videos, and web pages from around the world; in fact, I doubt many web pages are even created and updated on any of Apple's computers -- it's a Windows/Linux world, judging from the number of foreign language characters that show up on Mac-rendered web pages, all those  (and other geographcal-specific letterforms) that riddle (literally and figuratively) a typical printed web page from Mac Os.

After using it the past 30 seconds, I can tell you that 14.1.2 feels dramatically, the same.

I never understood the way Apple insists the only way to get the latest (safest) version of Safari is through the last 2 OS releases. Anything older than that -- say, 10.11 (El Capitan), 10.13 (High Sierra) et al -- are not updated. Suddenly any software updates or security fixes require (currently) 10.15 and maybe 10.14. I won't even go into OS 11 B.S. Land (that's Big Sur, to you, sir). To a degree, Firefox doesn't require this, not does Google Chrome doesn't require this. (They do have minimal OS requirements, though). But what web browser (other than Apple's Safari) requires that your computer have the latest OS releases installed first? snip snip Anyone still running iWeb --you know, "web design for the rest of us!" /s

Macos mojave, apple releases safari 14.1.2 for macos catalina and mojave with security improvements.

Avatar for Filipe Espósito

Apple today quietly released an updated version of Safari for users running versions of macOS prior to macOS Big Sur 11. Safari 14.1.2 is now available for macOS Catalina and macOS Mojave with security improvements and bug fixes.

The update follows the release of iOS 14.7 and watchOS 7.6 , which were made available to the public earlier today. The final builds of macOS Big Sur 11.5 and iPadOS 14.7 are yet to be released. However, what exactly these updates bring in terms of security improvements is unknown at this time.

On its security webpage , Apple only mentions that more details about today’s updates will be available soon. Earlier this year, Apple introduced Safari 14.1 for macOS Catalina and macOS Mojave , which fixed a serious exploit in WebKit that had been used to execute arbitrary code on a device without authorization.

Presumably another security breach in WebKit has been patched with the latest versions of iOS and macOS, and now Apple is releasing the same patch for Mac users who cannot update to macOS Big Sur. The company suggests that more details will be revealed after an investigation to confirm that the security update works.

For the protection of our customers, Apple doesn’t disclose, discuss, or confirm security issues until an investigation has occurred and patches or releases are generally available.

What you need to know

  • Apple has released Safari 14.1.2 for macOS Catalina and macOS Mojave.
  • Apple says that it is a security update but has not specified what it is for.

Apple is bringing yet another security update to Safari users still on macOS Catalina and macOS Mojave.

The company has released Safari 14.1.2 to macOS Catalina and macOS Mojave. Apple says that the update is focused on security per the Apple Support website, but has not specified exactly what the security update is for. It says that the details of the release will be "available soon."

This is the second security update to Safari for macOS Catalina and macOS Mojave users in 2021. Back in May, Apple released Safari 14.1 that addressed a security issue with WebKit.

Apple has had a lot going on with Safari lately. The company recently rolled back some of the radical design changes it had made to the browser in iOS 15 and macOS Monterey after beta testers complained about some of the changes, especially with the tabs experience.

Comments About Safari 14.1.2

Notable replies.

Safari is notoriously slow on my computer. This version seems glacial. Firefox for example works normally on same websites

It’s not available only via software update – you can download it directly from Apple. For example, the Mojave updater: http://swcdn.apple.com/content/downloads/44/05/071-47373-A_9A3CD8EVNY/jpiompzkddnter5tm1094w57tg63ok0axz/Safari14.1.2MojaveAuto.pkg

Interesting! Where did you find the link for that direct download?

Sort of an LOL comment, links are here: https://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/15675/apple-safari

Fascinating! I wouldn’t bet on that link working forever, although perhaps MacUpdate has ways of detecting if it breaks. Apple almost certainly wouldn’t be happy about that link being published if they knew. If nothing else, it’s a security concern if people think they can download Safari from any source other than Software Update.

On the other hand, many other downloads are publicly available at Apple - Support - Downloads such as the June 2nd Catalina security update and even entire MacOSes. I’m probably missing something, but since the Safari updates are being downloaded from Apple servers I’m not sure why it’s an issue to circumvent the Software update mechanism. I realize some updates are computer specific but many are not. In that case I’d much rather download an update once and apply it to multiple computers than download it onto every one.

That Support Downloads page used to have just about everything. Nowadays it only really seems to get security updates—nothing else has been posted there this year. The last Safari version posted there was from 2015.

If you are finding that Safari can no longer connect securely to some websites, you might try other third party browsers that are currently still receiving updates, like Firefox browser or Brave browser .
