This Article is part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe (Earth-199999) - the universe that takes place within the MCU franchise. It is therefore regarded as Official and Canon Content , and is connected to all other MCU related subjects.

The Mark XL ( Mark 40 ), also known as "Shotgun" , is a Hyper Velocity Traveling Suit and was one of several new Iron Man Armors created by Tony Stark as part of the Iron Legion . The armor was created sometime between the Battle of New York and the Mandarin's Threats . [1]

It was featured in Iron Man 3 , and made its debut when Tony ordered J.A.R.V.I.S. to initiate the "House Party Protocol" , in which it was activated along with the rest of the Iron Legion to aid Tony in his battle against Aldrich Killian .

The suit was named "Shotgun" due to the explosive sound it creates, like a real Shotgun itself when breaking the sound barrier while in flight.

The armor was built for hyper velocity traveling, and specializes in high speed flights. It is currently known as the fastest hypervelocity armor among Tony's armor arsenal, with a speed of over the excess of Mach 5.

Armor Design

It has a bluish gray or silver color scheme overall, as opposed to the regular red and gold. The helmet seems to have a flat beak-like mouthpiece. This was most likely created for the purpose of fast bursts of speed, due to the streamlined structure of the mask, in contrast to the sharper, angular mask over the original faceplates. On the back lies a jet with a triangular gap.

The armor also has a few golden platings on it that are not as noticeable afar but can be seen when viewing the armor close up.

Armor Capabilities

The Mark XL has many unique capabilities as a Hyper Velocity Traveling Suit. It's most notable ability is its Extreme Speed, it being over the speed of Mach 5.

Extreme Speed

The Mark XL has an incredible ability to fly at very high speeds. The armor can go over the speed of Mach 5 , making it the fastest hypervelocity armor ever created by Tony. The speed limit of the armor is unknown, but most hypervelocity projectiles travel at a maximum speed of between Mach 7.3 and Mach 8.8 (between 5600 mph and 6700 mph), so it's safe to assume that is the range of the armor's top speed. It can easily outrun any existing Human Aerial Vehicle in the modern world, including the North American X-15, which is the fastest manned aircraft in the world, with a top speed of Mach 6.7.

Armor Features

The Mark XL has powerful Repulsor powered thrusters on it's back, used to propel itself faster or support heavy pressure under the atmosphere.

Donning System

The Mark XL, along with all the other newly built Mark suits, uses a more advanced technology that was based off on the Mark VII's technology, which is able to wrap itself around Tony's body, without the aid of robotic arms or any external mechanicals.

It can flexibly open itself to allow Tony to enter into the suit and automatically wrap itself around him, anywhere at anytime, much like the Mark XLII's technology and the other newly built Mark suits'.

The Mark XL has standard based Repulsors , modified with improved power and propulsion speed to match it's streamlined armor design and extremely fast speed.

The Mark XL has a vertical rectangular Unibeam , and is powered by the new and improved Arc Reactor Mark II .

Before Iron Man 3

The iron legion and creation.

Sometime after the Battle of New York , Tony Stark , who was haunted by his near death experience from the invasion, suffered from post traumatic stress disorder, becoming paranoid and obsessed with security.

Because of this, Stark began working on the Iron Legion , and overtime, created several Iron Man Armors , from the Mark VIII to the Mark XXXIX , which were all built with various designs and purposes. After the Mark XXXIX / Gemini' s completion, Stark proceeded to working on his next armor, the Mark XL .

Tony created the armor not long before the Mark XLII' s creation on December 18, 2012. Stark re-used the previous speed technology of the Mark XXXI and Mark XIX to create it's ultimate successor, the new and improved Mark XL .

In it's creation, the armor was designed to surpass the Mark XXXI in all aspects of speed and agility. Tony doubled the speed achievable from the Piston armor and integrated it into Mark XL , making it the faster armor, as well as the fastest in his armor arsenal. Since the armor's speed was brought to greater heights, the suit's type was renamed from the Mark XXXI' s older High-Velocity Centurion Suit to the new Hypervelocity Traveling Suit .

Tony also named the suit "Shotgun" , stemming from the explosive sound it creates, like a real Shotgun itself when breaking the sound barrier in flight.

It was presumed that during it's initial completion, the armor was tested a number of times before it reached perfection, became fully functional and combat ready.

Completion and Storage

After completing the armor, Stark stored it in the Hall of Armors Chamber beneath his Malibu House , where all the other previous Iron Man Armors he completed were stored in as well.

With Shotgun' s completion, Stark proceeded to work on a new type of suit with increased agility and a new feature called Prehensility , creating the Mark XLI .

Malibu Raid

When Tony's Malibu Mansion was raided, and later destroyed, the Mark XL along with the rest of the Iron Legion were still stored safely within the Hall of Armors Chamber , as it was left undamaged during the attack. The chamber was still intact, completely sealed, and concealed from view.

This was part of Stark's plan, in which the Iron Legion was to be used later after he uncovered the truth behind the Mandarin and A.I.M.

Activation of the "House Party Protocol"

The Mark XL was activated by J.A.R.V.I.S. along with all the other armors in the basement of Tony's Malibu Mansion, under Tony's order of the "House Party Protocol" . It then flew out of the Hall of Armors, and proceeded to fly towards the Roxxon Oil Rig right after together with the Iron Legion.

Arrival with the Iron Legion

When the Iron Legion arrived, the Mark XL was the fourth suit to arrive flying beside the Mark XVII and being one of the first seven armors to arrive at the scene, forming a line with the other armors to surround the area.

After Tony finishes his remarks, the Mark XL along with the other armors await his command through J.A.R.V.I.S.

He then tells J.A.R.V.I.S. to "Target all Extremis heat signatures. Disable with extreme prejudice.", which J.A.R.V.I.S. replies with "Yes sir!", which echoes out through out all of the suits, including the Mark XL. The armor then targets and attacks the Extremis Soldiers and battles them in the oil rig with the help of the other armors.

Duel with Killian

Shotgunmidfall

Shotgun catching and enveloping Tony Stark.

In the heat of the battle, the Mark XL travels at high speed as it is controlled by J.A.R.V.I.S., and quickly flies to save Tony as he falls down from being ejected from the Mark XVI . It grabs and quickly envelops Tony. The armor, now controlled by Stark, flies with extreme speed and Tony grabs Aldrich from the platform above. Flying at high speed, Aldrich hurls Tony off of him as they crash into the roof.

Tony lands swiftly and uses both of the Mark XL' s Repulsors to blast Aldrich as he turns to face Tony. Tony fails and Aldrich dodges all of Tony's blasts. The two brawl on the roof, and as they fight Aldrich scratches both sides in the abdomen area of the armor, while Tony counters and gains the upper hand in which he shoves Aldrich back to a wall and blasts him with both Repulsors again.

The second wave of Repulsor blasts.

Tony misses and prepares to fire again, but Aldrich grabs his arm and turns the Repulsor to him which causes it to blast himself. Stark falls off the platform, but the armor's thrusters activate and Tony regains his stability.

After going back on the platform, Tony re-engages Aldrich. Aldrich tries to grab Tony, but Tony activates the armor's Boot Repulsors and uses it to kick Aldrich in his stomach. He repeats the same move again on his face, then uses the Hand Repulsors , and makes a powerful blow to Aldrich's face. Tony then kicks him in the side after, but Aldrich quickly regains his focus and grabs the armor's leg, which detaches itself from Tony.

Losing the Battle and Destruction

As Killian holds the detached leg, he immediately slices it off of the armor after. Tony then loses his footing, while Aldrich proceeds to hit Tony using the armor's leg that he sliced off.

While regaining his footing, Stark tries to punch Aldrich again, but Aldrich grabs him and somersault's him to the other side. As Tony rises, he tries to blast Aldrich again, but Aldrich easily grabs the armor's hand and crushes it.

With Stark losing, and after a short conversation between the two, Killian heats up his hand and slices the Mark XL in half, completely destroying the armor. Tony is ejected from it a split-second before, saving him.

Tony falls down to the platform below and the armor's pieces follow, rendering the armor completely destroyed.

Iron Man and Tony Stark in Iron Man 3

Avengers: Endgame is sure to be the swan song of many Avengers , including (probably) everyone’s favorite billionaire, playboy philanthropist, Tony Stark . The former war profiteer has come a long way since 2008, and with each movie he’s been in he’s shown off one or twenty new suits of Iron Man armor.

Here’s a rundown of the suits that Robert Downey Jr. has worn across the first 10 years of the Marvel Cinematic Universe , and the comics they came from. No offense to War Machine, Iron Monger, or even Iron Spider, but the original armor wearer is where it’s at.

iron man time travel suit

First Appearance: Tales of Suspense #39 (1963), Iron Man (2008)

Appropriately debuting in the Tales of Suspense issue titled “Iron Man is Born!,” the Mk. I armor was developed by Stark and fellow captive Ho Yinsen after Stark was kidnapped in Vietnam. (In the movie, Vietnam was updated to Afghanistan.) The suit was designed as a pacemaker to keep shrapnel from reaching Stark’s heart, and as in the movie, was used to escape his captors. Stark held onto the armor for a while in the comics, and painted it gold because its initial gray was too scary.

First Appearance: Tales of Suspense #48 (1963), Iron Man (2008)

In the film, the Mk. II came about after Stark had returned to his swanky Malibu home and decided to revamp his original armor into the sleek design we all know, just shiny and chrome. The Mk. II was our first sight of the repulsor technology that would be in later iterations, and led to one of the best scenes in the original Iron Man . In the comics, the Mk. II was made after fighting Mister Doll, when Tony realized that the original armor was too cumbersome. One of the Mk. II models was later melted down to help create the Mk. 37.

First Appearance: Tales of Suspense #66 (1965), Iron Man (2008)

The very first Iron Man armor to contain repulsor rays and a faceplate in the comics, the Mk. III managed to last 11 years before it had to be replaced. As we see in the movie, it’s the first complete version of the Iron Man armor, granted the red-and-gold color scheme and used to both defeat the Ten Rings terrorists and Obadiah Stane, aka the Iron Monger. This was the last armor in the comics that Stark wore before he got his first solo book.

Mark IV (Iron Man 2)

iron man time travel suit

First Appearance: Iron Man #85 (1976), Iron Man 2 (2010)

A battle with the supervillain known as the Freak destroyed the Mk. III armor. The Mk. IV is one of the models with the longest lifespan, and was worn by Stark’s friend James Rhodes during his tenure as Iron Man. This is typically Stark’s backup suit whenever his modern armors fail him. In Iron Man 2, Stark wore the Mk. IV for most of the film until he completed the Mk. VI.

iron man time travel suit

First Appearance: Iron Man #142 (1981), Iron Man 2 (2010)

There is very little similarity between the Mk. V armor in the comics and that of the film. Where the film’s version is a portable one-off used in the race track fight against Whiplash (and subsequently disposed of), the comics version was meant for space exploration and to fight the villain Sunturion. Because of Stark’s advancements in technology, though, it clearly doesn’t get a lot of play.

iron man time travel suit

First Appearance: Iron Man #218 (1987), Iron Man 2 (2010)

Another suit that has very little similarities between its two versions, the Mk. VI was made in the comics specifically for underwater excursions. Everything was reworked to function in the ocean depths, plus the ability to jettison its wearer if escape was needed. In Iron Man 2, Stark makes the armor after creating a new element for his Arc Reactor. And as we saw in Avengers, it was the first suit to have underwater capabilities — and the first to get all dinged up by Helicarrier blades.

Mark VII (The Avengers)

iron man time travel suit

First Appearance: Iron Man #152 (1981), The Avengers (2012)

Sometimes you need a suit more geared towards stealth, and that’s where the Mk. VII comes in. The Stealth Suit was used to infiltrate a Roxxon space satellite after the Space Armor gave him away, and was later used to infiltrate Soviet airspace during the first Armor Wars. (Long story.) The MCU’s Mk. VII armor is what Stark wears during the final act of The Avengers , and can be activated with a pair of bracelets. Those bracelets also served as the starting point for the...

Mark XLII (Iron Man 3)

iron man time travel suit

First Appearance: Iron Man #1 (2013) , Iron Man 3 (also 2013)

In Iron Man 3, Tony Stark built an assortment of Iron Man suits — a little over 30 in total — as a coping method to distract himself from anxiety, an assemblage of technology known as the Iron Legion, but the Mk. 42 is the only one that really matters.

Thanks to computer chips implanted into his arms, Stark can summon the various pieces of the Mk. 42 to his location at will, and even control it remotely like a drone. The armor in the comics has the same remote control ability, but was created in part thanks to Rocket Raccoon — who inspired the ability to add or detach mods for any situation.

Mark XLIII (Avengers: Age of Ultron)

iron man time travel suit

First Appearance: Iron Man #5 (2013), Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015)

After AIM recreated that pesky Extremis virus that he’d dealt with in the comics some years back, Stark decided to go and destroy every sample he could find. His new nonlethal Stealth Suit was created to help him covertly destroy a sample kept in a Columbian drug dealer’s mansion (like ya do). The suit in Age of Ultron, meanwhile, is just a recolored version of his Mk. 42 from his last movie.

Mark XLIV/Hulkbuster

iron man time travel suit

First Appearance: Iron Man #4 (2013), Avengers: Age of Ultron (2015)

Another suit created to destroy Extremis samples in the comics, Stark’s Mk. 44 armor was created so he could fight 13 superhumans at one time. The Heavy Duty armor is tricked out with plenty of firepower to handle them all, along with defensive capabilities to match. The film version, meanwhile, marks the debut of the iconic Hulkbuster armor — which first showed up in the comics as Mk. 13 in Iron Man #300. The Hulkbuster armor got thoroughly messed up during the fight with Hulk in Age of Ultron , but was fixed up by the time of Avengers: Infinity War as the Mk. 49, worn by Bruce Banner.

iron man time travel suit

After joining the Guardians of the Galaxy, Stark created a brand new space armor so he could travel better without any complications. The suit also has a Saturn V extension made for Lunar landing and can reach jet speeds higher than Mach 10. Age of Ultron’s version was worn during the fateful Battle of Sokovia, which saw Stark use it to destroy the floating country in midair before it could decimate the planet. It was also the first armor to feature the new AI, FRIDAY, as JARVIS had been incorporated into the consciousness of the android Avenger, the Vision.

Mark XLVI (Captain America: Civil War)

Iron Man in Captain America: Civil War.

First Appearance: Iron Man #5 (2013), Captain America: Civil War (2016)

Created while Stark was gallivanting in space with the Guardians, the Mk. 46 was meant as a mod for the 42 model, but was also allowed for solo use. It doesn’t have any real distinction other than having laser cannons strapped to the shoulders. Civil War’s big difference with the armor is that it’s so portable it can be worn around Stark’s wrist like a watch or kept in the seat of a helicopter.

Mark XLVII (Spider-Man: Homecoming)

Iron Man and Spider-Man in Spider-Man: Homecoming.

First Appearance: Iron Man #15 (2013), Spider-Man: Homecoming (2017)

A mix between Stark’s typical armors and the more heavy weaponry of the War Machine suits, the Mk. 47 is armed to the teeth with missile launchers and gatling guns all over its body. Which is fair, given that he was taking a vacation in space and fighting deadly aliens. In Spider-Man: Homecoming, that version’s Mk. 47 could be controlled remotely, like the Iron Legion, or worn, and it came armed with a set of deployable mini-thrusters.

Mark L (Avengers: Infinity War)

Iron Man in Avengers: Infinity War.

First Appearance: Superior Iron Man #1 (2014), Avengers: Infinity War (2018)

Following a spell that inverted his moral code (long story), Tony Stark decided to move to San Francisco and become an evil tech billionaire and transform the city into a tech utopia. Really. His Endo-Sym armor was based primarily off symbiote biology and wrapped around his body like liquid metal. Infinity War’s equivalent of the Mk. 50, however, was based on nanotech that adapted to his thoughts, giving him the ability to instantly form a variety of weapons.

Mark LXXXV (Avengers: Endgame... trailer)

Iron Man unleashing a giant gun in a trailer for Avengers: Endgame.

First Appearance: Invincible Iron Man #1 (2015), Avengers: Endgame (2019)

The 85th(!!) armor numerically but the 51st he’s ever built in the MCU, this lovely suit will make its debut at some point in Avengers: Endgame . The 51st armor Stark made in the comics, the Model-Prime, came about after Stark’s armor was reverse engineered by one Riri Williams, who would later become Ironheart. The Model-Prime can change its shape and color for the situation. Doctor Doom would later steal a version of this armor, just in grey with his classic green cape, and use it to try to be a good guy while Tony was dead, becoming the Infamous Iron Man .

So far, we’ve only seen blurry glimpses of the armor in trailers for Avengers: Endgame , but we’ll be sure to get an eye-full when the movie hits theaters. on April 26.

  • Breaking Down the Complicated Time Travel in <i>Avengers: Endgame</i>

Breaking Down the Complicated Time Travel in Avengers: Endgame

Warning: This post contains spoilers for Avengers: Endgame .

At the end of Avengers: Infinity War , Thanos uses powerful gems called Infinity Stones to snap his fingers and destroy half of all life in the universe. At the beginning of its follow-up film Avengers: Endgame , the Avengers hunt down Thanos and try to take the Infinity Stones back to undo the damage. Unfortunately for them, Thanos has already destroyed the Stones. There is nothing they can do.

Fast forward five years. A rat happens to crawl over a machine that allows people to travel through the Quantum Realm and accidentally releases Ant-Man (Paul Rudd). He’s been stuck in the Quantum Realm for half a decade, even though it feels to him as if only five minutes have passed. Ant-Man rushes to Avengers headquarters to tell his fellow superheroes that they can travel back in time and collect all the Infinity Stones.

Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) agrees to work on a machine that would allow the Avengers to time travel — on one condition. He has started a family in the last five years and thus does not want to alter recent history in any way. Instead of trying to rewind time once they have the Time Stone and undo everything that has happened in the last five years, they decide to use the Infinity Stones to bring back everyone who disappeared in this current timeline, five years later. That way, Tony can preserve his daughter’s life, while saving dusted characters like Spider-Man (Tom Holland).

If you’re already confused, well, we’re just getting started. Time travel in pop culture can get rather tricky. Just ask J.K. Rowling, who destroyed all the Time Turners in Harry Potter just to avoid dealing with time-loop-related plot holes. Avengers: Endgame tries to side step these problems by establishing certain time travel rules. It’s complicated, so bear with me.

The Avengers time travel through the Quantum Realm

null

Ant-Man theorizes that because he was able to jump forward five years in what felt like five minutes, the Avengers could travel back in very little time. They use Pym Particles (created by his mentor Hank Pym before he disappeared in the snap) to shrink to subatomic size and enter the Quantum Realm. Tony just has to mess around with some of the technology for a day and ta-da! He’s solved the problem of how to control where they land in time using tiny little watches. Anyway, back to the plot.

They decide to split up and visit a few spots to intercept the Infinity Stones. Captain America (Chris Evans), Iron Man, Hulk (Mark Ruffalo) and Ant-Man travel to New York in 2012 when both the Mind Stone and the Space Stone (then known as the Tessearact ) were in Loki’s (Tom Hiddleston) possession during the Battle of New York and the Time Stone resided at the Sanctum Sanctorum in the same city.

Iron Man and Ant-Man flub stealing the Space Stone (Loki gets away with it), so then Captain America and Iron Man travel further back in time to a military lab in New Jersey in 1970 to steal it from Tony’s father’s lab. They also grab more Pym particles from Pym’s lab while they’re at it.

Thor (Chris Hemsworth) and Rocket (Bradley Cooper) travel to Asgard in 2013 where the The Reality Stone resides inside Jane Foster (Natalie Portman). Nebula (Karen Gillan) and James Rhodes (Don Cheadle) travel to Morag in 2014, where Peter Quill (Chris Pratt) found the Power Stone. And Black Widow (Scarlett Johansson) and Hawkeye (Jeremy Renner) travel to Vormir in that same time period to find the Soul Stone.

What the Avengers do in the past won’t affect the future in their timeline

avengers-endgame-hands-circle

Let’s say they steal the Space Stone from Tony Stark’s father in 1970. Doesn’t that mean that Tony Stark’s father was never able to study the Stone, thus he never creates the Arc Reactor technology that Tony later uses to power the Iron Man suit? And Iron Man is never born? This is basically a version of the Grandfather Paradox of time travel: Travel back in time to kill your grandfather, and then you are never born — hence you are unable to kill your grandfather.

Well, not in this movie! This movie version of time travel isn’t quite what most moviegoers are used to. For example, the rules of the butterfly effect where changing one tiny aspect of the past will alter the future in unpredictable ways — think Back to the Future or this famous Simpsons episode — aren’t in place.

READ MORE: How to Stream Every Single Marvel Movie

Nor is there a time loop. For example, in Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban, the characters who travel back through time know exactly what they need to do in the past because it’s already happened in the future. (For example, future Harry and Hermione know they have to hit their past selves with rocks because they already felt themselves being hit with rocks at the time.) They also know they will tear apart their world if they diverge from that strict plan.

If the Avengers change something in the past, they create a parallel timeline

Time travel in Avengers: Endgame is based on a popular time travel theory in the field of quantum physics. At one point, Iron Man even drops the name David Deutsch — that’s the guy who came up with the “Many Worlds Theory” or “Multiverse Theory.” Basically, he argues that the place we conceive of as our universe is just one of many parallel universes. And if you change something in the past, you create a new timeline, branching out from the original timeline. So nothing they do in the past affects their main timeline.

For example, in the original timeline, Loki was captured and taken to Asgard by Thor in 2012. In Endgame , the 2023 Avengers accidentally facilitate Loki’s escape with the Tesseract (the Space Stone). But when they travel back to the future, Loki hasn’t used the Stone to wreak havoc for a decade. That all happened in a separate timeline. This logic eliminates the option of simply traveling back in time and killing Thanos as a baby, as Rhodes suggests, because it would not change their future, only an alternate universe.

But they have to return the Infinity Stones to their original places

The Ancient One (Tilda Swinton) insists that in order to maintain the reality of each universe that they visit, the Avengers need to return the Infinity Stones to the places they found them after they are done using them. It’s fine if they create separate timelines, but if they deprive one timeline of the gems that maintain its reality, then they essentially break that timeline. Captain America does return all the stones at the end of the movie. (He also returns Mjolnir, the hammer that Thor took from Asgard, back to Thor’s home planet for the same reason.)

Nebula can kill her past self and still survive

null

The movie contains an extreme example of why parallel timelines are different from the butterfly effect. Toward the end of Endgame , the new, good Nebula (Karen Gillan) from 2023 shoots and kills old, evil Nebula from 2014. And though you might expect 2023 Nebula to start bleeding out or disappear, she’s completely fine. That’s because when 2014 Nebula traveled to the future on Thanos’ orders, she created a split timeline. Thus these are two different Nebulas who exist on two different timelines. What happens to one does not directly affect the other.

Captain America was married to Peggy all along

avengers-endgame-group-shot

Remember when I said earlier that there were no time loops? That’s not entirely true. There is one time loop that seems to work differently from time travel in the rest of the movie. I don’t know why. It just does.

Mid-way through the movie, Hulk promises the Ancient One that he will return the Infinity Stones to their original places in space and time. At the end of the movie, Captain America goes back in time to do this. But instead of returning after five seconds, like he agreed upon with Hulk, he stays in the past.

A few seconds later, Bucky and Sam (Anthony Mackie) see an old Captain America sitting on a nearby bench. We see in a flashback that after returning the Infinity Stones, he goes back to live out a quiet life with Peggy. We see them dancing together in their shared home.

According the logic of the movie, Captain America didn’t actually create a new timeline. If he did, he wouldn’t have been able to return to that same bench. He just lived out what had always happened to him. He was always married to Peggy (Hayley Atwell).

Back in Captain America: Winter Soldier, Peggy mentions a husband, though she never reveals his name. In a video that plays on a loop at the Captain America exhibit, Peggy says, “[Steve Rogers] saved 1,000 men, including the man who would become my husband, as it turned out. Even after he died, Steve is still changing my life.” She looks down after saying this, perhaps evasive — probably because said husband was, in fact, Steve.

Later, when Steve visits her hospital bed, we see pictures of children but none of her husband — presumably because that would give away who her husband was. Tellingly, Peggy says in that scene that “none of us can go back.” She then forgets that Steve is there — because at that point, she’s suffering from Alzheimer’s — and exclaims, “You came back!” He replies, “I couldn’t leave my best girl. Not when she owes me a dance.” Likely this is a parallel to the off-screen reunion that happens when Steve travels back in time to find Peggy.

As long as Steve maintained his false identity and didn’t interfere with anything in the past that would bring the Avengers to their fight with Thanos (like saving Bucky from being brainwashed by HYDRA) the timeline stays stable. The other version of Steve still wakes up in 2012 after being frozen during World War II and still joins the Avengers. Older Steve watches on from afar. It’s unclear whether the two Steves would have encountered one another at Peggy’s funeral: They were both alive when it happened during Captain America: Civil War , but perhaps they were both there and the younger version simply didn’t recognize the older version or his fake moniker.

Everything happened the way it did because it had to, according to Doctor Strange

Doctor Strange suggests in Infinity War that the Avengers could only beat Thanos in one possible future out of millions. In Avengers: Endgame , he tells Tony Stark, “If I tell you what happens, it won’t happen.” Given that the Avengers defeat Thanos at the end of the battle (and Doctor Strange not-so-subtly flashes one finger at Iron Man during the fight), we know that we are seeing that one single future in which the Avengers defeat Thanos.

Knowing that, old Steve would resist meddling in the Avengers’ affairs so that they would eventually win their fight against the big purple baddie.

Avengers: Endgame almost had a unique look for time travel suits

Inspired by astronaut spacesuits.

What turned out to be a sleek grey design with dark red finish was once more of an astronaut's spacesuit – bulky helmet included – as French illustrator Aleksi Briclot revealed on his Instagram .

Unveiling the movie's concept art via three images, Aleksi explained in the caption: "Early concept art for the time travel suit in Avengers Endgame here applied on Captain America.

"As it is about dangerous travel this one is inspired by elite pilot like those from Sr71, you know the Lockheed Blackbird also used by the Xmen.

"It was some really fast and hard to locate jet. I've read some articles about those pilots and it was quite a thing. The color scheme and the small pipes here and there for refreshing the air are inspired by those pilot suits.

"There is also some hints of astronauts spacesuits (we're talking about trying through the Quantum Realm!) [sic]".

Marvel’s New Iron Man is Going Back in Time

Iron man: when did tony stark stop selling weapons, a story many lord of the rings fans missed sheds more light on a major villain.

Tony Stark is one of the most prodigious minds of Marvel both in the comic books and the Marvel cinematic universe (MCU). His inventions range from the impossibly beneficial (like an infinite power source or a time travel GPS) to the impossibly dangerous (Ultron). However, his greatest creations will always be his suits of armor. Those are his life's work.

That's why they get plenty of screen time in all MCU films that involve Tony Stark. He didn't pick up the Iron Man nom de guerre just for coolness, after all. Since they're pretty much the best Tony has to offer, the way they're showcased in the MCU is nothing short of breathtaking. Here are 10 of those awesome Iron Man suit-up moments to remind you why we love Tony Stark 3000.

10 MARK XLII FIRST TEST (IRON MAN 3)

In Stark, er, stark contrast to how badass most of Stark's suit-ups are in his own MCU films, Tony's first attempt at a fully remote deployment system for the Iron Man armor was quite blunderous. He specifically made the Mark XLII armor for this purpose. It turns out the machine (or maybe it was Jarvis?) had other plans in mind.

It seems the artificial intelligence (A.I.) of the individual pieces of the armor needs plenty more work. They're as much a danger to Stark as to his enemies and even nearly rendered Tony infertile at (looking at you codpiece). Nevertheless, it was a great icebreaker moment that still somewhat shows Stark's genius and progress as an engineer. Kinda painful to watch, though.

9 MARK XLII TO THE RESCUE (IRON MAN 3)

It wasn't until later on in  Iron Man 3 when the Mark XLII armor managed to do what it was supposed to... safely and correctly. Stark used it creatively well when he defended Pepper Potts during an attack in his house. What initially could have been a lethal moment for both characters was averted; all because of the remote portability of the Mark XLII.

Later on, near the ending of the film, Tony used the Mark XLII (which he religiously calls the Prodigal Son), to get himself out of a tight spot. Stark managed to call upon the armor before the Extremis, er, extremists could torture him. The pieces did arrive fashionably late, but still saved Tony's life in a pinch.

8 BLEEDING EDGE MARK L (AVENGERS: INFINITY WAR)

Nanites or nanotech was the pinnacle of Stark tech for Iron Man suits. It was first introduced in  Avengers: Infinity War when the Ebony Maw and Obsidian Cull assaulted Earth to snag the Time Stone from Dr. Strange. Needless to say, the Mark L made all other portable Iron Man suits obsolete since Tony could suit-up with it just by pressing a button. It's similar to T'Challa's suit but more advanced and protective (sorry, Shuri).

Tony would later incorporate the same technology again for his Mark LXXXV but instead of the visor closing in with nanites, it closed into the helmet like a traditional Iron Man armor (with the iconic "clunk). Now, the nanites, despite being more practical and advanced, are less satisfying than a traditional plated Iron Man armor suit-up. That's why it's so low on this list, it's simply not hypnotic or entertaining enough as Iron Man suit-ups go.

7 FREE FALL WITH THE MARK VII (THE AVENGERS)

Before Tony even invented the Prodigal Son (Mark XLII), he already had remote armor capabilities. Albeit, it's a lot bulkier since the whole suit comes bolting towards him, knocking back everything along the way. This was first shown with the Mark VII which Stark wore on the first Avengers.

After Loki pushed Tony out of the Stark Tower (which would later become the Avengers tower) Stark had a contingency in the form of Mark VII. It went after him and suited him up amidst his precarious free fall from a New York skyscraper. Of course, it was successful (more so than the Mark XLII); Tony was able to continue fighting after managing to avoid turning into a red paste on the New York streets.

6 MARK XLVI IRON WRISTWATCH

Technically, this one's not a full-body suit-up but we can't help it; it's so Tony Stark. Just when you thought he couldn't surprise you more with gadgets and gizmos, out comes a fully functional Iron Man gauntlet stowed away from Tony's regular-sized wristwatch.

It's a testament to Stark's tactical genius which he combined with his engineering knowledge. With the portable gauntlet, he's able to hold off the Winter Soldier momentarily in Captain America: Civil War  and has proven time and again that he doesn't really need the suit to be a superhero or to be brave. Having the best armor in the world can help, though.

5 JETPLANE ARMOR MARK XLVI (CAPTAIN AMERICA: CIVIL WAR)

That Iron Wristwatch Tony had? Of course, it's part of a bigger collection! The gauntlet belongs to the Mark XLVI which is Tony's iteration of the Iron Man armor for  Captain America: Civil War . We do see him in the film many times already wearing the suit.

However, the Mark XLVI shone a lot brighter when Tony showed how convenient it was as an armor-to-go. He was able to store the armor in a specialized jet plane and deploy it with a simple press of the button. It's one of his sleekest and classiest suit-up moments and even made him resemble DC's Bruce Wayne for a bit. Then, there's also the fact that this armor was enough to defeat Captain America.

4 MARK I IN A CAVE... WITH A BUNCH OF SCRAPS! (IRON MAN)

Being rewarded after long and hard work is one of the best feelings ever at the end of the day. For Tony back in his Iron Man days, it was not only his life which he got as a reward; he also the very first Iron Man suit, the Mark I. As a proof of how special it is, Stark built it with a severe handicap and setback, in a cave too.

Given how limited his resources were during that time, such a feat is worthy of a Nobel Prize or something similar in the Marvel universe. It's not his smoothest suit-up to be exact but it's one of the most exciting. The Mark I suit up marked the moment when Tony officially became Iron Man.

3 HULKBUSTER'S SUIT IN A SUIT (AVENGERS: AGE OF ULTRON)

Just when you thought the Iron Man armors couldn't get more ridiculous and more protective, the Hulk had to happen. Stark does like to plan for any negative outcome and one of those was the Hulk snowballing out of control. Hence, in  Avengers: Age of Ultron , he had to one-up the green monster with the Mark XLIV a.k.a. the Hulkbuster.

It's so huge and vital to the Avengers' operation, Stark had to store it in a satellite above Earth; it's to be called upon in the event that the Hulk became unplacatable. As you can imagine (or remember) it was one of the most epic suit-up moments ever. It's also the closest thing to a Gundam Stark will ever build.

RELATED:  10 Iron Man Armors We’ll Never Get To See In The MCU

2 MARK V SUITCASE (IRON MAN 2)

An Iron Man suit in a suitcase, how poetic. Stark really had to build this one just for that. He did get to use it in  Iron Man 2 against a murderous Whiplash. It certainly has proven instrumental in Stark's victory in that encounter. The Mark V, as the name implies, is only the fifth suit Stark has built but it's already looking advanced as ever.

It's meant to be a portable Iron Man suit in a time when all the Iron Man armor took several minutes to install or deploy and had to be stored in a large garage. Simply watching Stark suit up with the Mark V is enough to want one... or five, in case you need one for every day of the week.

1 MARK III WORKING MODEL (IRON MAN)

Despite all the more advanced suit of armors Tony came up with from  Iron Man 2 all the way up to  Avengers: Endgame , none of them compared to the elation, satisfaction, and wonder we all felt upon seeing Stark suit-up for the first time with his first working Iron Man suit, the Mark III. It was introduced as his third iteration of the armor back in the first  Iron Man  movie.

All the armor pieces were stored underneath Tony's house where the garage unraveled and transformed into a machine armorer upon activation. The beauty in the first Mark III suit-up scene is the intricacy and attention to detail shown in how Tony was fitted with all the pieces. From the high-pitched whir of the automated screws to the distinct "clank" of the metal plates; it was the closest thing we had to an ASMR video from the MCU.

Now, if only they could give us a 10-hour (or 20, even) version of the first Mark III suit-up, that would be a nice consolation after Stark's death.

The Evolution of the Iron Man Suit

by MarvelBlog.com · August 10, 2020

Iron Man 2

In a new video, Disney+ explores the evolution of Tony Stark’s Iron Man suit. Fans have seen the super hero employ many different versions of his suit over the years. It’s hard to realize just how many costumes have been featured on screen.

The video features each suit over the course of Iron Man’s history:

Different Versions of the Iron Man Suit

The first suit featured is the Mark 1. This first iteration of “ Iron Man ” was created in a cave where Stark and Dr. Ho Yinsen were held captive by the Ten Rings, a terrorist group. While crude, this first version of the suit featured a manual rocket launcher, flamethrowers mounted on each arm, and jet boots that helped Stark escape.

Also featured in the video is the Hulkbuster. This suit, known as Mark 48 (since it is allegedly the 48th suit Stark built), is officially called the Hulkbuster 2.0. Powered by 1 or more Arc Reactors, this suit was used by Bruce Banner to fight Thanos at the Battle of Wakanda during Infinity War .

The last suit featured is the Mark 85, the final costume we see Stark wearing in the year 2023 in  Endgame . Equipped with enhanced nano-structure, this armor is more durable and efficient in battle than its previous versions.

The advanced armor features Iron Man’s classic gold and red color scheme with a silver eco-structure connecting separate armor pieces. Of note, the helmet features updated technology that enables Iron Man to more efficiently target enemies, as well as new information displays.

Iron Man’s Legacy Lives On

Iron Man has undoubtedly left an indelible mark on the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) . His wide variety of technologically advanced suits are one of the many ways Marvel created such a memorable character in Tony Stark.

As only seems fitting, Peter Parker appears to be following Stark’s path in this regard. Spiderman is already on costume number three in his MCU appearances.

Avengers: Endgame Concept Art Reveals Wild Alternate Design For The Time Travel Suits

Chris Evans as Steve Rogers/Captain America in Avengers: Endgame (2019)

Fans are always excited to see what kinds of costumes the Avengers will sport in their latest films, and Avengers: Endgame managed to give all of the original heroes new looks. However, aside from their typical attire, Earth’s Mightiest Heroes and their allies also donned quantum realm suits , which they used to travel through time . While the final designs for the costumes were well done, concept art has now revealed that the gear could’ve looked a lot different.

Aleksi Briclot, an artist and illustrator whose worked on several Marvel films, shared an early sketch of Captain America sporting a quantum realm suit. Only this suit is gold and is a lot bulkier than what we saw in the film. You can check out the alternate design for yourself:

A photo posted by on

At first glance, that suit doesn’t even look like it was meant for time travel. Instead, it looks like it would be more suited for scuba diving. The gear also has key similarities to an Iron Man suit , especially due to its armor-like build. From a storytelling perspective, the Russos and the screenwriters could have made this an intentional connection, since Tony Stark was one of the driving forces behind the team’s time travel efforts.

Nevertheless, it was probably best that directors Joe and Anthony Russo opted for the quantum realm suits that were featured in the movie. First off, the final design is a lot sleeker and very functional, which the heroes needed while traversing through different time periods. It would have taken time for them to move around in the others, and getting them off would have taken time away from their mission.

Bringing this design to life may have also required the use of more practical effects. One of the amazing things about the costumes seen on screen is that they were created entirely with visual effects . No part of the suits were done practically, which likely saved time. While it may not have been impossible to do so with this original concept, the creatives may have wanted to incorporate some level of practicality with it, which could have been time-consuming and costly.

Finally, the suits in the film are very similar to the Ant-Man suit cosmetically, which makes complete sense. Although Tony Stark discovered the trick to time travel, it was Hank Pym’s eponymous Particles that made traveling possible. And with the team all using the particles, it would make sense that they’d have suits that are designed to handle their physiological capabilities.

The suit that appears in Aleksi Briclot’s concept art is definitely interesting and would’ve been intriguing to see on the big screen. Still, fans didn’t seem to have any complaints about what the attire that the characters ultimately ended up wearing. The final designs, admittedly, weren’t as elaborate as this one, but they still got the job done, in more ways than one.

Iron Man (Tony Stark)

Tony Stark Iron Man

Cool exec, heart of steel.

Tony Stark is the wealthy son of industrialist and weapons manufacturer Howard Stark and his wife, Maria. Tony grew up a genius with a brilliant mind for technology and inventions and, naturally, followed in his father’s footsteps, inheriting Stark Industries upon his parents’ untimely death. Tony designed many weapons of war for Stark Industries, far beyond what any other company was creating, while living the lifestyle of a bon vivant.

Fate would take a dark turn for Tony Stark once he decided to consult on a weapons contract overseas in enemy terrain. An improvised explosive device exploded underneath Tony’s transport, and he was brought to the brink of death.

Awakening as a prisoner of the warlord Wong-Chu, Tony made a gruesome discovery: the explosion had sent a piece of shrapnel mere inches from his heart. It was only the timely intervention of fellow captive and engineer Yinsen that kept the shrapnel at bay. While held captive, and forced to work on weapons, Tony turned his near-death experience into inspiration. What if he could power an iron suit that would not only keep the shrapnel from killing Tony, but also help him to escape?

Iron Man (Tony Stark)

Combining their genius, Tony and Yinsen built a mighty suit of iron armor that would be dubbed Iron Man. This first suit left a lot of room for improvement, but it still did what Tony couldn’t do alone. Yinsen sacrificed his life so the final preparations could be made, and Tony, wearing the Iron Man suit for the first time, escaped and returned to the United States a changed man. With full access to his equipment, Tony built a new, more streamlined suit of armor—the first of many updated versions he would create—and dedicated his life to fighting threats to the world.

Since that first suit built in a cave, Tony has created dozens of new suits and upgrades over the years. However, throughout the 50-plus Iron Man models, there are common offensive and defense capabilities found in most iterations.

The primary weapon contained within every suit, the repulsor rays use energy pulses to repel and disrupt enemies and are generated through the suit’s gauntlets. The suit’s booster jets enable Stark to fly fast enough to break the sound barrier, and maneuver more quickly than any fighter jet.

Iron Man’s helmet provides Tony with a heads-up display that gives him 360-degree vision, access to information about his surroundings and enemies, and the ability to transmit and block transmissions along any frequency. The helmet also gives Tony a degree of resistance to EMP and psychic-based attacks.

A weapon centered in Iron Man’s chest, the unibeam is capable of projecting dazzling light, and can also be used as a powerful force beam that is even more powerful than the repulsor ray.

Each of Tony’s suits provides a full range of telecommunications, including the ability to jam and transmit on any frequency, and sophisticated artificial intelligence capable of piloting Tony to safety should he be rendered unconscious.

Iron Man (Tony Stark)

Beyond his all-purpose suits, Tony has created specialized armor for specific scenarios. Some notable examples include the Hulkbuster armor (so-named as its size and strength allow Tony to stand toe-to-toe with the Hulk, when needed), along with deep-space, underwater and stealth suits.

One thing common to most of Iron Man’s recent suits is the integration of Extremis, an attempt to re-create the super-soldier serum with many modifications. When using Extremis, Tony can interface with his brain’s repair center, which allows him to rebuild his body from scratch. Essentially, Tony is able to merge his mind, body, and armor in unprecedented ways. He can “armor up” in mere seconds—with armor stored within himself—gains split-second reaction times, and can even generate new internal organs to replace the old. Unfortunately, Extremis is also vulnerable to being hacked, and the Skrulls and other organizations have done just that.

REPULSING THE REPULSIVE

Numerous villains have made up Iron Man’s gallery of enemies, with many of them similarly armor-based in order to counter Iron Man’s abilities. The Russians have created both the Crimson Dynamo and Titanium Man to try and stop the threat posed by Iron Man, and have fought Stark through numerous iterations.

The Mandarin is one of Iron Man’s fiercest archvillains. A tactical, mystical and technological genius, the Mandarin sought ultimate power, and often Iron Man is the only one smart and strong enough to stand in his way. In fact, the Mandarin, working with warlord Wong-Chu, captured Tony Stark and indirectly brought about the creation of Iron Man. The Mandarin has returned again and again to pit his magic and intellect against Stark technology.

Iron Man (Tony Stark)

A competing industrialist, Obadiah Stane, never lost his taste for weapons and was a great fan of psychological warfare. He took hostile control of Tony Stark’s company for a time, and though he perished in battle, his descendants are perhaps even more ruthless than he was.

Another rival industrialist on par with Stane, Justin Hammer is interested in the accumulation of wealth and power and sees Tony’s altruism as a big stumbling block toward that goal.Other foes of note for Tony through the years have included the Ghost, Radioactive Man, and nefarious organizations like Advanced Idea Mechanics (AIM).

FIGHTING AND SMITING

Iron Man can’t always fight alone and has many notable allies and teammates. Stark is one of the founding members of the Avengers and is considered one of the “Big Three” core members, along with Thor and Captain America. While he has left the team at various points for personal reasons, he has always returned to fight alongside them again and again. He is one Avenger that can always be counted on.

Originally, Tony’s secretary Pepper Potts and limousine driver Happy Hogan grew to be Tony’s two best friends in the world. A romance between Pepper and Tony fizzled out, but she and Happy found happiness together for a time, until his tragic death. More recently, Pepper has taken up occasional super heroics herself, with an armored suit Tony has created for her called Rescue.

Former military man James “Rhodey” Rhodes became Tony’s bodyguard and trusted confidant. When Tony’s alcoholism got the better of him, Rhodey became the new Iron Man. Later, Rhodey donned a weapons-laden variation on the Iron Man suit and dubbed himself War Machine, fighting alongside Tony many times.

During a mind-clearing vacation from Earth, Tony joined the Guardians of the Galaxy, making fast friends with Rocket Raccoon especially. While Tony would eventually return to Earth, Rocket’s technology has made its way into many successive iterations of the Iron Man armor.

Iron Man (Tony Stark)

AMAZING ARMOR, BLAZING POWER

Since creating that first suit, Iron Man has gone through numerous events significant to his life.Originally, to cover for Tony Stark’s escapades as Iron Man, he convinced the world that Iron Man was his bodyguard. This helped explain the perceived close ties between Stark and Iron Man to both the outside world and even those who fought alongside Iron Man.

It was a brawl with the trickster god Loki that convinced Iron Man, the Wasp, Ant-Man, Thor and the Hulk to band together as a team. The Mighty Avengers stood tall, battling foes that no single one of them could face alone. Though the temperamental Hulk would leave straight away, Iron Man would become one of the Avengers’ core members, along with Thor and a newly revived Captain America.

Tony, working alongside Nick Fury, was also a key player in the buildup of S.H.I.E.L.D. from a tiny, secretive government branch to the well-equipped, global peacekeeping force it became. Though Tony and his chauffeur and best friend Happy Hogan both fell in love with secretary Pepper Potts, Tony, out of respect for his friend, agreed to step aside. Pepper and Happy were soon married, though their relationship would be a roller coaster.

Having faced near death more than once thanks to his injury, Tony underwent a heart transplant, and finally no longer relied on the Iron Man suit to live.

Tony’s dependence on alcohol was brought to a head when Iron Man failed in battle while under the influence. It was only the timely intervention of friends Bethany Cabe and Edwin Jarvis that Tony was able to keep his alcoholism at bay for a time. Alcoholism being what it is, though, is something Tony will have to manage for life. In fact, it wasn’t long after this that Tony relapsed, this time passing along his armor to Rhodey to become the new Iron Man until he was able to recover. This relapse also cost him his company, which he lost to his fiercest rival, the manipulative businessman Obadiah Stane.

Iron Man (Tony Stark)

On the road to recovery, but looking for a change in scenery, Tony moved to California. Back in the armor, he joined the newly formed West Coast Avengers. This newfound resolve led him to create a new company in Silicon Valley, called Stark Enterprises.

Sick of finding Stark technology among his enemies, Iron Man went about neutralizing all his technology among his armored foes. Unfortunately, many of these designs were used by S.H.I.E.L.D., who weren’t at all happy about their Mandroids and Guardsmen being shut down. Ultimately, Iron Man squared off against government operatives and temporarily faked his own death, something he would do more than once in his career.

Eventually, Tony discovered that the Iron Man suit was causing his nervous system to deteriorate. After briefly experimenting with a telepresence suit, Tony created the War Machine suit to protect himself. He again faked his death and put himself into suspended animation, passing the War Machine suit along to Rhodey, who continued in his stead.

After Tony recovered, he seemingly went rogue, murdering several people and forcing the Avengers to recruit a teenage Tony Stark from the past to combat him. These events were later revealed to be manipulation by the time traveler known as Immortus, but in the interim, the adult Tony was killed.

Iron Man (Tony Stark)

During a battle with Onslaught, the younger Iron Man was one of the many heroes, including his fellow Avengers, who were shunted into an alternate universe and believed dead. Eventually returning to his own reality, this younger Tony merged with a resurrected adult Tony thanks to Franklin Richards, who was in turn exonerated for previous charges. Stark then set up a new company called Stark Solutions and rejoined the Avengers.

The Iron Man armor technology became so sophisticated that it gained sentience and malevolence. While attempting to shut down this sentient armor, Tony Stark had a heart attack. The armor replaced Tony’s heart with an artificial one to save his life, and Tony began steering himself away from such high technology out of fears of this incident happening again.

After Tony revealed his identity as Iron Man to the world at a press conference, the U.S. military determined it now had the ability to use Stark technology wherever it wanted. Tony managed to become Secretary of Defense, hoping to keep an eye on said technology.

Tony was forced to resign as Secretary of Defense due to manipulation by an insane Scarlet Witch, who brought about the destruction of Avengers Mansion and the temporary break-up of the Avengers. Soon after, Stark would join a gathering of heroes to stop a Super Villain prison breakout, leading to the formation of a new Avengers team who would use Stark Tower as their headquarters.

During this period, Tony began using the Extremis serum to merge his mind, body and armor together in unprecedented ways.

The Avengers—and the Super Hero community at large—would face tremendous conflict when Tony faced off with longtime ally Captain America regarding the Superhuman Registration Act, siding with the government’s decision to regulate superheroes. The two ended up leading their own large factions of heroes, fighting for what they believed in, though Tony’s side eventually won the hard-fought conflict. In the wake of this Civil War, Stark would help convince Bucky Barnes to become the new Captain America after Steve Rogers was assassinated, while Tony himself became director of S.H.I.E.L.D.

Iron Man (Tony Stark)

Tony was unable to stop the Earth from being taken over by Skrulls, as the aliens bypassed Stark defense technology used around the world. He was forced to resign as S.H.I.E.L.D. director and the Avengers again temporarily disbanded, replaced for a time by a government-sanctioned team run by Norman Osborn.

As the Extremis serum began to fail in Tony’s body, causing his mind to deteriorate, he decided to erase all the information about Earth’s heroes gathered by the Superhuman Registration Act from the world’s computers, to stop it from falling into Norman Osborn’s hands. To restore Tony to his previous intelligence, his friends “rebooted” his mind, though doing so wiped out his memories of the Super Hero Civil War and the events that followed.

Tony created yet another new company, Stark Resilient, to provide free energy to the world. This enraged traditional industrialists like Justin Hammer. After Tony overcame mind control by a resurgent Mandarin, he decided to leave Earth for a time and join the Guardians of the Galaxy. Thanks to machinations by the Red Skull, many of Earth’s heroes and villains had their morality inverted. The now idealistically evil Tony Stark decided to sell the Extremis technology to the world, creating a utopia but leaving everyone dependent on him both physically and monetarily. It was only through a reboot of the universe during a second “Secret Wars” event that this malevolent Tony Stark was undone.

Once again, the world’s heroes came into great conflict with each other, this time over an Inhuman named Ulysses that could see crimes and other events before they happened. When the Avengers used this precognition to ambush Thanos, Rhodey was killed in the process, and Tony decided to make sure nobody used Ulysses’ abilities ever again.

This culminated in a battle between Iron Man and Captain Marvel. Tony lost and went into a coma. In his absence, an A.I. version of Tony assisted young genius Riri Williams in creating a new suit of armor, allowing her to fight as Ironheart in Tony’s absence.

Avengers: Endgame Theory Explains Why Only Tony Stark Could Snap Away Thanos' Army

The most realistic d-day movie came out 23 years before saving private ryan, netflix’s trending new horror movie is a great reminder to watch blumhouse's divisive $54 million box office hit from this year.

Earth's Mightiest Heroes have new suits in Avengers: Endgame , but why? The latest trailer for Endgame has revealed a lot more about the aftermath of Thanos' snap at the end of Avengers: Infinity War . Nebula, Tony Stark and Carol Danvers are all on Earth to help the team, Hawkeye's going to see a lot more action as Ronin, and Black Widow's hair suggests a pretty sizable time jump. But by far the biggest reveal is the Avengers' new suits.

Seen at the end of the Avengers: Endgame official trailer , the entire team - Captain America, Nebula, Ant-Man, Ronin, War Machine, Iron Man and Black Widow, with Bruce Banner, Thor and Captain Marvel presumably flanking - are wearing new costumes. Each one is personalized to the wearer's size and powers, but all are of the same hard exterior in white, black and red. The Avengers have had connected costumes before - in Avengers: Age of Ultron , Cap sported a small "A" on his shoulder - but nothing compares to this. What's going on?

Related: Avengers: Endgame Trailer 2 Breakdown

The answer goes into long-standing rumors about the plot of Avengers: Endgame that are unlikely to be confirmed overtly until the movie releases, so if you want to go in knowing as little as possible, you may want to look away.

Still here? OK then: the new costumes in Avengers: Endgame are Quantum Realm suits that will allow the heroes to travel back in time . It's widely accepted that  Endgame will see the Avengers travel through time to the events of previous movies in a bid to undo Thanos' snap; set photos have shown Ant-Man and a blonde Tony Stark in the Battle of New York, and all subsequent evidence points in the same dierction. What exactly they're aiming to do is still unclear - the most logical theory is that they're trying to copy the Infinity Stones to do a reversal snap of their own - but we do have a good idea of how they'll go about it.

In the MCU, the most overt manner of time travel is the Time Stone, which was used by Doctor Strange to defeat Dormammu and Thanos to undo the Mind Stone's destruction. Of course, that's currently in the Mad Titan's destroyed Infinity Gauntlet and not at the Avengers' disposal. What they do have access to in the Quantum Realm. Since Ant-Man , it's been established that the laws of time and space break down in the microverse, and in Ant-Man & the Wasp 's mid-credits scene - which ended with Scott Lang trapped - he was explicitly warned about " time vortexes ".

With Ant-Man turning up at Avengers HQ with the Quantum Tunnel van at the end of Avengers: Endgame 's teaser , the team now has access to the realm and, via the recently-escaped Ant-Man, knowledge of how to enter and leave. It's believed that these costumes - called " Advanced Tech Suits " by some tie-in merchandise and looking rather like those worn by Hank Pym in  Ant-Man & the Wasp - are intended to protect the Avengers from the negative effects of the Quantum Realm as they go back to movies such as The Avengers and  Guardians of the Galaxy . That doesn't explain why Ant-Man himself has a new suit - his regular costume is proven to be suitable for Quantum Realm navigation, but it's surely connected to the nature of the plan.

Indeed, while we know what the Avengers' new costumes are for in Endgame , we still know precious little about the bigger plan. And given Marvel's secrecy so far, that will have to wait until the movie releases on April 26.

During his eleven years in this role, Robert Downey Jr has received a considerable amount of praise, mainly for adding a comedic touch to his emotional character.

Throughout his iconic journey in the MCU, Iron Man has donned several armor suits, some of which have stood out for their distinct designs. Tony Stark's evolving armor suits, which include the tough Mark I and smooth Mark VII, have become a symbol of courage. Tony Stark's armor suits not only show his dedication to technically upgrading them but also depict how he is evolving as a person and a hero in the MCU.

Tony Stark has donned some impressive Iron Man armor in the MCU throughout his nine films, which include four Avengers, a solo trilogy, and collaborating with Spider-Man. So, Here's a look at each one of the Iron Man suits that appear in the MCU!

<p>In the very first Iron Man film, Tony Stark is transformed from a young and arrogant businessman to a superhero who saves the world. Alongside his transformation, the viewers also see the clear evolution of his Iron Man suits as he becomes comfortable with designing new and technically advanced suits for himself. The very first armor suit, Mark I, that Tony Stark built was a pivotal moment that propelled him into his journey as an Iron Man.</p> <p>In a life-threatening situation, Stark, along with his Ho Yinsen, constructs a sample armor suit with their limited resources and is named Mark I.  This suit relatively is a collection of silver metals and is armed with a weapon that sprays out fuel, a rocket launcher, and crude jet boots. <p>The second armor suit which Tony Stark designed for himself was the Mark II and it is also seen in the very first Iron Man movie. He and his fellow Ho Yinsen committed to each other that after returning from Afghanistan they will create a better and enhanced version of Mark 1. So he first created the powerful repulsor technology and then used it in the creation of his famous Iron Man armor, Mark II.</p> <p>This Iron Man armor is one of the sleekest silver suits that have been designed by Tony Stark and has a much slimmer shape. In addition, it also has Tony Stark's AI assistant JARVIS, and a fully functional HUD along with tiny parts that help Tony fly and move around easily. However, the suit also has a weakness of not handling high altitudes without freezing. In the end, this drawback is ultimately turned into a strength when he uses it to defeat Shane.</p>

<p>Tony Stark perfected the classic look for his armor in the first movie when he created the most-enduring Mark III. The introduction of Mark III marked Iron Man's full transformation into a superhero and was also an important moment in the evolution of Iron Man's suit designs. Inspired by his many favorite luxury cars, Tony Stark created this suit in a classic red and gold color scheme and this coloring was then used in almost all of his models which he created later.</p> <p>This armor was the very first one that Tony assembled specifically to defeat the bad guys because it was packed with several anti-tank missiles, mini-guns, flares, and also supercharged repulsors. Another suit that was seen in Iron Man 3 is the Mark XVII which was named Heartbreaker because of its huge panel design on the chest. This suit was used briefly in Iron Man 3 to carry Rhodey to its own suit.

The main motive behind designing Mark XXV, which was named Thumper, was to use it for construction work. The suit had pneumatic jackhammers on each arm rather than having the old traditional hands.

The first armor Tony Stark donned in his battle with Aldrich Killian in Iron Man 3 is called Silver Centurion. The suit has an improved energy system and blades hidden in each arm.

Mark XXXIII

Mark XXXVIII

Another suit that was the most desirable was Mark XXXIX, known as Gemini. This armor suit had sleek white, black, and bronze colors instead of the regular red and gold.

Shotgun was Tony Stark's fastest creation because it could zoom at a speed over Mach 5. This was picked up by Stark in his battle with Aldrich Killian when Pepper Potts was thought to be gone.

This suit was named Bones and had a black and gold color scheme with a pattern that was running along the armor panels. This one is also the most lightweight and allows it to break apart so that fighting can be made easier.

With the end of Iron Man 3, it was believed by the viewers that this could be possibly an end for Tony Stark. But this was proved otherwise when he appeared in the Avengers: Age of Ultron along with a new suit Mark XLIII, which was used for his battle against Ultron and his army. This suit had an updated design from the regular Iron Man suit and had the best features from the Mark VII and Mark XLII armor suits.

This was created by Stark after combining the features of different suits and fit inside the Hulkbuster. Further, the armor also had the feature to switch to other modes easily and an infrared system to scan.

<p>Another suit that was featured in Avengers: Age of Ultron was the Mark XLIV also known as the Hulkbuster. This was the most unique suit in the film and arrived after years of anticipation. Nasa’s ironman-like exoskeleton could give astronauts, paraplegics improved mobility and strength.

Marvel Comic’s fictional superhero, Ironman, uses a powered armor suit that allows him superhuman strength. While NASA’s X1 robotic exoskeleton can’t do what you see in the movies, the latest robotic, space technology, spinoff derived from NASA’s Robonaut 2 project may someday help astronauts stay healthier in space with the added benefit of assisting paraplegics in walking here on Earth.

NASA and The Florida Institute for Human and Machine Cognition (IHMC) of Pensacola, Fla., with the help of engineers from Oceaneering Space Systems of Houston, have jointly developed a robotic exoskeleton called X1. The 57-pound device is a robot that a human could wear over his or her body either to assist or inhibit movement in leg joints.

In the inhibit mode, the robotic device would be used as an in-space exercise machine to supply resistance against leg movement. The same technology could be used in reverse on the ground, potentially helping some individuals walk for the first time.

“Robotics is playing a key role aboard the International Space Station and will continue to be critical as we move toward human exploration of deep space,” said Michael Gazarik, director of NASA’s Space Technology Program. “What’s extraordinary about space technology and our work with projects like Robonaut are the unexpected possibilities space tech spinoffs may have right here on Earth. It’s exciting to see a NASA-developed technology that might one day help people with serious ambulatory needs begin to walk again, or even walk for the first time. That’s the sort of return on investment NASA is proud to give back to America and the world.”

Worn over the legs with a harness that reaches up the back and around the shoulders, X1 has 10 degrees of freedom, or joints – four motorized joints at the hips and the knees, and six passive joints that allow for sidestepping, turning and pointing, and flexing a foot. There also are multiple adjustment points, allowing the X1 to be used in many different ways.

X1 currently is in a research and development phase, where the primary focus is design, evaluation and improvement of the technology. NASA is examining the potential for the X1 as an exercise device to improve crew health both aboard the space station and during future long-duration missions to an asteroid or Mars. Without taking up valuable space or weight during missions, X1 could replicate common crew exercises, which are vital to keeping astronauts healthy in microgravity. In addition, the device has the ability to measure, record and stream back, in real-time, data to flight controllers on Earth, giving doctors better feedback on the impact of the crew’s exercise regimen.

As the technology matures, X1 also could provide a robotic power boost to astronauts as they work on the surface of distant planetary bodies. Coupled with a spacesuit, X1 could provide additional force when needed during surface exploration, improving the ability to walk in a reduced gravity environment, providing even more bang for its small bulk.

Here on Earth, IHMC is interested in developing and using X1 as an assistive walking device. By combining NASA technology and walking algorithms developed at IHMC, X1 has the potential to produce high torques to allow for assisted walking over varied terrain, as well as stair climbing. Preliminary studies using X1 for this purpose have already started at IHMC.

“We greatly value our collaboration with NASA,” said Ken Ford, IHMC’s director and CEO. “The X1’s high-performance capabilities will enable IHMC to continue performing cutting-edge research in mobility assistance while expanding into the field of rehabilitation.”

The potential of X1 extends to other applications, including rehabilitation, gait modification and offloading large amounts of weight from the wearer. Preliminary studies by IHMC have shown X1 to be more comfortable, easier to adjust, and easier to put on than previous exoskeleton devices. Researchers plan on improving on the X1 design, adding more active joints to areas such as the ankle and hip, which will, in turn, increase the potential uses for the device.

Designed in only a few years, X1 came from technology developed for Robonaut 2 and IHMC’s Mina exoskeleton.

NASA’s Game Changing Development Program, part of NASA’s Space Technology Program, funds the X1 work. NASA’s Space Technology Program focuses on maturing advanced space technologies that may lead to entirely new approaches for space missions and solutions to significant national needs.
