War in the Pacific Tour with Iwo Jima Reunion of Honor

The tour has far exceeded our expectations. We have loved getting to know you and to share this wonderful experience with you.

– Gary and Joy Peck

War in the Pacific Tour is a transformative experience!

Travel with our historians to the islands where the battles raged during the War in the Pacific, where “uncommon valor was a common virtue.” Our experts in WWII history will discuss the American and Japanese strategies and how these strategies actually played out on the Pacific islands of Hawaii, Saipan, Tinian, Guam, and Iwo Jima.

Our tour is the most comprehensive War in the Pacific Tour. We visit Battleship Row at Pearl Harbor where the Japanese attacked on December 7, 1941 and the remains of the sunken USS Arizona rests. We explore the invasion beaches of Saipan where hundreds of Japanese jumped to their deaths. We travel to Tinian, which is where the departure airfield for the Enola Gay and the atomic bomb was located. We learn about the battle sites on Guam, key in the story of the Navajo Indian code talkers role, and also the site of the War Dog Memorial. We experience the emotion of climbing Mt. Suribachi on Iwo Jima, where the American flag was raised to symbolize victory on Iwo Jima, an iconic image forever etched in our minds.

Iwo Jima Reunion of Honor Memorial Service

SAHT is proud to partner with the Iwo Jima Association of America (IJAA) to bring Iwo Jima Veterans, family members, historians, educators, and those who need to walk the “Black Sands of Iwo Jima” to the island where the most iconic battle of the Pacific Theater occurred. The IJAA, in coordination with the Japanese Government, the Iwo Jima Association of Japan, and military commands from both countries, will conduct a joint “Reunion of Honor” ceremony on Iwo Jima.

With its three airfields, Iwo Jima was ideally located as a fighter-escort station. It was also an ideal sanctuary for crippled bombers returning from Japan.

  • The U.S. Air Force fought in the longest sustained aerial offensive of the war.
  • More Marines were sent to Iwo Jima than to any other battle.
  • More medals for heroism were awarded for action on Iwo Jima than any battle in the history of the U.S.

This is only an inkling of the history you will learn as you island-hop through the War in the Pacific.

All guests going to Iwo Jima must attend the full tour. However, guests can sign up for the the tour without the day trip to Iwo Jima. Because entry on Iwo Jima is limited to American passport holders, our international guests will have a free day on Guam during the day visit to Iwo.

User reviews rating score:

  • Reunion of Honor Memorial Service: Attend the day-long Memorial Tour and Observance on Iwo Jima
  • Hawaii: Visit Battleship Row in Hawaii where the remains of the sunken USS Arizona rests
  • Saipan: Walk the invasion beaches of Saipan, Harakiri Gulch, and Marpi Point, where hundreds of Japanese jumped to their deaths
  • Tinian: Visit the launching field for the Enola Gay and atomic bomb
  • Guam: See the key battle sites on Guam and the War Dog Memorial
  • Mt. Suribachi: Climb Mt. Suribachi, where the American flag was raised on Iwo Jima

Day-By-Day Itinerary

Our tour will begin at the Welcome Reception and Dinner at the Honolulu hotel. You will meet the Stephen Ambrose Historical Tours staff and your fellow travelers.

Ford Island is the centerpiece of the Pearl Harbor National Historic Landmark District and adjacent to Battleship Row. The original airfield, air tower, WWII hangars, a collection of bungalows and officers’ housing remain on the site.

Battleship Row, home to the USS Arizona Memorial, is built over the remains of the sunken battleship USS Arizona, the final resting place for many of the 1,177 crewmen killed on December 7, 1941. The loss of life on this “Day of Infamy” became the focal point for a nation that was previously divided over the issue of involvement in the war.

The group will visit the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific and the Honolulu Memorial, referred to as the Punchbowl. Located in Puowaina Crater, roughly translated, “Puowaina” means “Hill of Sacrifice.” Here you will hear an overview of the entire Pacific War.

Saipan and Tinian

The capture of Saipan was one of the turning points of the war in the Pacific. Following Japan’s surrender in 1945, Vice Admiral Shigeyoshi Miwa of the Japanese Navy said, “Our war was lost with the loss of Saipan.”

In Saipan, you will visit the Invasion Beaches and battle sites of Operation Forager. Our historians will discuss the combat between the Americans and the Japanese during the 24 days it took to secure the island. Names that testified to the bitter fighting were given, such as Death Valley, Purple Heart Ridge and Harakiri Gulch, where the last major battle of the island occurred.

You will visit Aslito Airfield, as well as Mount Topotchau, and Marpi Point. It was at Marpi Point that hundreds of Japanese civilian families jumped to their deaths. Droves of Japanese soldiers also committed suicide at the many cliffs around Saipan, either jumping to their death, or by grenade.

Tinian is perhaps most famous for being the departure site for atomic bomb. The USS Indianapolis, prior to its departure for the Philippines, delivered this secret cargo to Tinian. Our historians will talk about the USS Indianapolis, the sinking of the ship and survival of the crew in the shark-infested waters. While in Tinian, we will spend some time focusing on the Tinian airport, which in 1945, was perhaps the busiest and largest in the world. At North Field, look for the plaques that mark the location of the bomb loading pits for the “Enola Gay” and “Bocks Car.”

Our study of Guam will begin with the Invasion Beaches, Asan and Agat beaches. These two invasion beaches, separated by the Orote Peninsula, are located six miles apart, on the west central coast of Guam.

Asan Point is a primary visitor area where the overall story of the Pacific War is told by means of museum exhibits. Historic sites, including a number of gun emplacements, caves, foxholes and pillboxes are located within the Asan Beach Unit. Gaan Point, at the center of Agat Beach, is another place of interest, which also contains many WWII sites and structures. The beach and offshore area here are relatively unspoiled and provides a good impression of how they looked in 1944.

One interesting aspect of the recapture of Guam was the role played by the Navajo Indian servicemen, who operated the radios openly conversing in their native tongue, unknown to the Japanese. This successful tactic completely baffled the Japanese, who expected to hear coded English. Another interesting place to visit in Guam is The War Dog Memorial. Located on the Naval Facility, it honors the Dobermans that served with the Marines in 1944 and who were killed in action performing duties such as leading scouting parties, exploring caves and serving as sentries.

After an early breakfast at the hotel, the group will take a charter flight to Iwo Jima. Iwo Jima, with its three airfields, was ideally located as a fighter-escort station; it was also an ideal sanctuary for crippled bombers returning from Japan. The U.S. Air Force fought in the longest sustained aerial offensive of the war, and more Marines were sent to Iwo Jima than to any other battle. More medals for heroism were awarded for action on Iwo Jima than any battle in the history of the U.S. Our historians will discuss the American and Japanese strategies and the bloody battle that ensued for 36 days as we tour Iwo Jima. It is atop Mt. Suribachi that the flag was raised, indicating victory on Iwo Jima. It is this picture that is etched in our minds as we remember Iwo Jima, “Uncommon Valor was a Common Virtue.”

Farewell Day

Our last day in Guam will be a free morning to recover and reflect from yesterday’s trip to Iwo Jima. Our tour will conclude that evening at a Farewell Dinner, hosted by the 3rd Marine Corps Division Association Guam.

Physical Demands

There is a lot of flying on this tour. If you have issues with blood clots, please speak to your doctor. Iwo Jima is a tropical, volcanic island that is covered with low vegetation and heat-radiating sand. There is no native population on the island, only Japanese military personnel. As a result, creature comforts are few or non-existent. Since it does not offer the most hospitable conditions for visitors, expect to deal with the elements while on the island, whether it is sunny and hot or windy and rainy. There is some transportation provided by the Japanese government, but veterans and their families are given priority. Some guests will have the opportunity to use this transportation, but there may be long wait periods. Walking is always an option and can be strenuous at times, such as when we ascend Mt. Suribachi.

Iwo Jima Tour 2023

What a great time and a great group of people. It was 3 years of waiting after COVID canceled the 2020 75th Anniversary Tour.

The wait was worth it, I got to go with my son, Alden, who is 13 years old. He got to have a blast and maybe he doesn’t realize it yet, but he got to meet the WWII veterans that were part of our trip. When he gets older and the last of them are gone, this will be a special moment for me and for him. We are forever grateful for them and for the heroes that never made it home.

It has been about a month since we got back and I am still recovering from all the stuff we saw and got to absorb. From abandoned air raid bunkers left by the Japanese Military, to tanks and LST’s in the water from the numerous D-Day type of invasions on Saipan, Guam and of course Iwo Jima.

Overall, the historians had unimaginable knowledge of not only the battles themselves, but who was in charge, who was relieved of command, and a host of other knowledge that put us in a place that we could imagine what it was like, of course without bullets flying at us.

I can only imagine what the other trips to Normandy and other historical sites might be like, but Iwo Jima in particular had significant meaning for my family and I want to thank all that went and made this trip of a lifetime possible.

Thanks SAHT for a great trip.

War in the Pacific - 2014

My son Ryan and I were on this tour in 2014. This was my first experience with SAHT, both of us were immensely impressed. If fact I have enjoyed 3 additional tours since then. Starting on Oahu we viewed all of the key sights associated with the Japanese raid on Dec 7. Many of these were behind the scenes and not accessible to the average tourist. From there we proceeded to Saipan. Tinian and Guam. All were very interesting and our guide Mr. Ron Drez was able to paint a picture of the fighting and historical significance that took place in every place we stopped. Driving across Tinian on what was in reality a ghost town compared to the frenzy of 1944 allowed you to transport yourself back to that time. The high point of this trip was the time spent on Iwo Jima. Standing on top of Mount Surabaci accompanied by a handful of veterans was a humbling experience. Ryan and I watched as these men raised a flag exactly on the spot where the well known picture was taken. I was honored to be in the company of these heroes, sharing that experience with my son was priceless. Moments that neither of us will ever forget. Like all SAHT tours all accommodations and arrangements were first class and amazingly organized.

2018 War in the Pacific and Iwo Jima Tour

I had been thinking about this Tour for five years and finally made a commitment to plan my calendar around this Extraordinary Opportunity this year. It so vastly exceeded my expectations on every level. Ron Drez and his wife, Judy, were both exceptional Guides and Hosts every step of the way. I thought I knew most everything about Pearl Harbor, but Ron’s connections and knowledge took us to places and stories that were all new, and added immensely to my historical body of knowledge. Amazing trips followed to Guam, Saipan and Tinian – places where my father had been during his service in WWII aboard the US Navy Attack Transport USS Oconto. The opportunity to retrace his journey was priceless.

The Crown Jewel Highlight, however was the Reunion of Honor flight and visit to Iwo Jima. Standing atop Mount Suribachi and walking along the Black Sand Invasion Beaches was a Lifetime Dream come true. The experience of being on Iwo Jima with the few remaining WWII Veterans who were there, along with young Marines serving today who hosted us on the island, made for one of the Best Days of my Life. Worth every penny and every day invested to get there! Thanks to Ron, Judy and Ambrose Tours for organizing and orchestrating an unforgettable Tour experience. I would do it again someday, without thinking twice about the decision.

Iwo Jima Tour: War in the Pacific

My wife and I made the tour in 2016 and the post tour to Peleliu. This trip was incredible with access to normally closed areas on Ford Island and Hickam Field. Seeing the loading pits for the Enola Gay and Bockscar on Tinian and the enormity of North Field really helped to bring the size of the US commitment into perspective. Climbing the black sand beaches of Iwo Jima and then Mt Suribachi was followed by the opportunity to talk with survivors of the battle. On to Peleliu with its coral caves filled with Japanese saki bottles and seeing the relatively undisturbed leftovers of war was amazing. Ron Drez provided a lot of information and insight into the various sites. Highly recommend both the main trip as well as the Peleliu post tour. Only downside was heat and humidity on Peleliu, but that only helped to further elucidate the difficulties of that miserable battle. Thanks to Mark Lettow (earlier review) for bringing the flag for pictures atop Mt. Suribachi.

War in the Pacific Tour

We took the Pacific Tour in 2016 and we still can’t stop thinking about it! It was the best travel experience of our lifetime. Saipan, Tinian, Guam, and Iwo Jima all provide lasting memories of the sites we saw and the things we learned. It was an adventure with moving experiences. We felt safe and comfortable the entire time. Our tour guides were friendly, knowledgeable, and gave us time to explore a little on our own as well. I was able to pay honor to my uncle who was a veteran of several Pacific battles before being killed on Saipan. I will be forever thankful that I was able to do that for our family. Pack smart and make room for a flag in your daypack!

Deeply moving and exceptional

Iwo Jima was deeply moving and exceptional. The historian’s observations and comments truly enhanced the struggles and memories of the is battle, which can never be over emphasized.

Amazing, inspiring and challenging experience

Ultimately PEOPLE made the trip. Our group was enthusiastic, knowledgeable, friendly and positive….Being able to converse and rub shoulders with the old gentlemen vets was one of the highlight. Our brief time on Iwo was historic, mythic, eerie, prayerful and extremely moving. Suribachi looming ominously over the killing fields and cold surf washing up on the iconic black sand beaches, it was an amazing, inspiring and challenging experience.

Such an honor

We enjoyed all of the tour, but in particular Iwo Jima, the island itself, and Tinian. It was such an honor to get to see it and especially to visit with the veterans about what it means to them.

December 7th, 1941 – When the World Changed Forever

The attack on the Pacific Fleet of the United States was unprecendented. That Sunday morning the Japanese invades awakened “The Sleeping Giant” that was the United States of America. December 7th, 1941 is one of those dates in history, much like July 4th, 1776, that is near and dear in the hearts of Americans. Anyone who lived through this time period can most likely tell you where they were on that day when they heard the news that the Japanese have attacked Pearl Harbor. Although the United States had been actively contributing to the Allies in the European Theatre against the advances of Germany, this event formally threw the USA into the Second World War.

In just a few short hours, the mighty American fleet at Pearl Harbor had been savagely attacked and shattered, giving the Japanese the advantage and leaving the mighty US Navy in shock. The assault was a combined effort between Japanese bombers and fighter planes as well as very small submarines that came into the harbor to deliver torpedoes. The main target of the attack was the backbone of the Pacific Fleet located at Battleship Row where the ‘Mighty Missouri’ now stands for visitors to tour. Fortunately for the United States, the incredibly valuable aircraft carriers were out to sea and survived to mount a counter-offensive in 1942 at Midway and Coral Sea where the US Navy struck two decisive blows.

Your visit to Pearl Harbor will be a day you will remember forever. The facilities at Pearl Harbor do as much to inspire awe in the event itself as to educate and bring alive the history of this period. You’ll get an in-depth experience about the events leading up to the attack as well as how Pearl Harbor and the island of Oahu were pivotal during the remainder of World War 2. If you’re visiting Hawaii and haven’t gotten a chance to experience this historic site, now is the time to visit one of America’s most important historic sites.

Military Discounts & Deals for Hawaii Tours and Activities

Lani

The islands of Hawaii offer a number of fun and memorable activities for all ages and walks of life. It is also the home for many members of the U.S. military and their family. With so many wonderful opportunities to experience Hawaii, now is your chance with the many available military discounts and deals.

What are Military Discounts?

Military Discounts

A military discount in Hawaii refers to the special price reductions or perks offered by various businesses and services in Hawaii to active duty, retired military personnel, and sometimes their families. There are hundreds of activities across Hawaii, and now you can use your military discount to save! These discounts may apply to a wide range of products and services, including lodging, dining, transportation, entertainment, and shopping, as a gesture of gratitude for their service to the nation. It’s always recommended to inquire about these discounts, as they can significantly reduce the cost of a vacation or stay in Hawaii.

Which Hawaii Activities are Covered by Military Discounts?

Snorkeling experience

Hawaii offers a plethora of activities for military personnel and their families with special military discounts. Almost every activity available across the islands offers some sort of Hawaii military discount, so for those of you who are stationed in Hawaii, it is very easy to enjoy a number of fun-filled options. Top attractions like the Pearl Harbor offer discounted rates. Moreover, tours of the iconic Diamond Head Crater and the Polynesian Cultural Center also grant military pricing. Outdoor enthusiasts can enjoy discounted rates on a variety of activities, including surfing lessons , snorkeling , and even deep-sea fishing trips. For those interested in Hawaii’s unique culture and history, the Iolani Palace and Bishop Museum also offer military discounts.

How to Receive a Military Discount

Receiving a military discount in Hawaii involves a few steps. First, verify your eligibility by being an active-duty military member, a veteran, or a dependent. Next, when booking accommodations, activities, or dining experiences, it’s vital to ask about available military discounts. It’s important to note that these discounts may not be publicly advertised, so always ask. Lastly, be prepared to show your military ID as proof of eligibility. Remember, discounts may vary by location and the final discretion lies with the service providers.

Are Military Discounts for Active Military Members Only?

Happy joyful military family celebrating dads returning

While it’s commonly believed that military discounts in Hawaii are exclusively for active military members, it’s not entirely accurate. Many businesses in Hawaii also extend these discounts to veterans, reservists, and military families. However, the specifics of who qualifies can vary from one establishment to another, so it’s always a good idea to ask about the details when seeking a military discount.

They offer a military discount , so spend the day learning and visiting the sea creatures!!

6. Visit Waterfalls

Hike the Waimea Valley and see one of the beautiful  waterfalls on Oahu . Wear the correct shoes. It can get muddy. The reason everything is so lush and green is because of the lovely rain the area receives.

Waimea Falls is one of the best Oahu waterfalls worth checking out for military families. Image of a tropical waterfall in North Shore Oahu.

Don’t forget to bring a camera to capture the gorgeous botanicals and wildlife that you may see. There is an admission fee but, it is  greatly discounted for the military !!  Check out this full guide to  visiting Waimea Valley on Oahu .

What do you think of when you think of Hawaii? Beaches!! The best beaches are only available to the military!!

Bellows Beach is one of the best beaches on Oahu for a military vacation to Hawaii. Image of Rock outcropping at the shore of Bellows Beach at dawn on Waimanalo Bay on Oahu, Hawaii.

Bellows Beach

If you’re looking for an amazing beach, Bellows Beach is located on Bellows Air Force Base. It is a popular beach but is far less crowded than the beaches of Waikiki.

It is gorgeous and the perfect place to spend a relaxing day basking in the sun.

Hickam Beach

Hickam Beach is located on Joint Base Pearl Harbor Hickam. It is less crowded than many of the Oahu beaches and it is absolutely beautiful.

It is not too rocky on your feet and there is not a large undertow. This is great for the kiddos that want to get out and play.

It also makes it a fantastic place to learn how to stand up paddle board if you have never tried it. The beach has a shack that rents out equipment for a fair price.

Haleiwa  is a town, not an activity as you may have guessed. It is a super cute  North Shore  town in Oahu that makes for the perfect day trip. There are tons of cute little shops, eateries, and beach areas. Everything there is super  Instagrammable .

Shave Ice(don’t add the D) at Matsumoto’s

This is a must while visiting Haleiwa. Stop in and have some shave ice . You won’t regret it.  Matsumoto’s  has been a favorite in Hawaii since the 1950’s.

Cafe Haleiwa

Cafe Haleiwa  is the best place to stop and eat if you get hungry on your trip. It is family-owned. All of the food is made-to-order, fresh, and organic. Check it out if you get the chance.

And….Don’t forget to take your pic by the famous Haleiwa sign!!

9. Hawaii Volcanoes National Park

If you are staying on the Big Island, you will love exploring the Volcanoes National Park in Hawaii.

For a military stay in Hawaii, you have to go snorkeling! There are plenty of beaches you can visit and snorkel at for free or cheap if you need to rent some gear.

Or, you can go on plenty of snorkeling tours where a boat takes you to some top snorkeling locations all over the islands.

Molokini Crater is one of the best snorkeling spots on Maui .

If you are on the Big Island, you will love going on a snorkel manta ray tour .

You can go snorkeling on Oahu at Shark’s Cove or at Hanauma Bay.

You will find plenty of snorkeling locations on Kauai as well!

More Ways To Save Money on a Military Vacation to Oahu

You will find plenty of Hawaii military discounts all over! Here are a few other great ways to save money for your military vacation.

1. Hawaii Rental Car Discounts

Budget ,  Alamo ,  Avis , and  Hertz  offer  military discounts up to 25% off  to military. Check  THIS link  to check out the Hawaii car rental discounts.

One of my top Oahu tips is to rent a car. Image of SUV parked at beach with surfboard in Hawaii.

But, that doesn’t mean you shouldn’t shop around for the best deal for your Hawaii military vacation. You can usually save a lot of money by booking through  Discount Hawaii Car Rentals .  Check out the latest prices and more details.

Basically, they get screaming deals on rental cars from top companies like  Alamo ,  Dollar Car Rental ,  Avis ,  Thrifty ,  Enterprise ,  Budget , and  Payless .

And then they pass the savings onto you.

Plus, they can often get free extra drivers or reduce the young driver rate. It’s definitely worth checking out.

2. Commissary

There are several commissaries on the island of Oahu.

If you have a hotel room or cottage with a partial kitchen area, a great way to save money is to purchase some of your food. Eat breakfast in the morning before you leave, pack a lunch to take with you, and bring something to drink for the day.

Purchase your  sunscreen  at the commissary instead of the ABC store in a popular tourist area.

Think smart, plan ahead, and you will be sure to save more of your hard-earned money on your Hawaii trip.

If you  rented a car  for your vacation, make sure to purchase your gas from a military location or from Costco if you have a membership.

This will surely save you lots of money.

4.  ITT

When you are making your plans for the events listed above, be sure to check  ITT  to see if you can purchase discounted tickets.

There are   ITT locations  on every base and at the Pearl Harbor NEX Mall.

Things To Know When Visiting Hawaii

1.  weather.

In general, the summers in Hawaii are fairly hot and dry and the winters are humid and a bit lower but still warm. There may be a slight breeze in the evening. You would be smart to bring a light sweatshirt.

Frequent rain is the norm and should be expected. It is how the island stays so green and tropical.

2.  Reef-Safe Sunscreen

It may not feel as if the sun is burning your skin. Don’t be fooled. You will see tourists walking around who thought this very thing and they will look just like that lobster you had for dinner last night.

Please remember to keep applying sunscreen regularly. It is your skin and it is important.

And you’ll want to make sure you are using  reef-safe sunscreen . It’s the only type of sunscreen allowed in Hawaii.  Click here to see more reviews.

3. Hawaii Etiquette

People in Hawaii are very friendly. Be respectful and kind to all. Take your shoes off if you find yourself entering someone’s home. Call the locals “locals.” Not all people who live in Hawaii are Hawaiian. Use the terms Aloha and Mahalo.

Be careful how you use the terms “the States” and “American.” Remember Hawaii is a state and the locals of Hawaii are Americans. This may seem dumb, but, several people have messed up those statements and it is very offensive.

Just respect the land and the culture, take pictures, and have fun!!

4. Swimming in Hawaii

The undertow is strong on certain beaches on Oahu. The waves may not look huge, be very careful.

Listen to the locals. Don’t jump in with your boogie board on Sunset Beach when a local tells you otherwise!! It is probably not safe!!

The 6 Best Kauai Helicopter Tours

Admire the Garden Island's waterfalls, canyons and peaks from the air.

Best Kauai Helicopter Tours

Courtesy of Blue Hawaiian Helicopters

The Hawaiian island of Kauai features lush green mountains, dramatic coastal landscapes, crystal-clear ocean waters and unbelievable scenery everywhere you look. However, it's hard to take it all in from a car or even a boat – there's just too much to see, and much of the island isn't accessible on land. That's why Kauai helicopter tours are so popular, because they let visitors see all the island's attractions from the air, making it easy to scale the highest cliffs and enjoy a bird's-eye view of Kauai's many valleys. Using both traveler opinion and expert input, U.S. News tracked down the best Kauai helicopter tours. Don't leave the island without experiencing one of these unforgettable flights.

Blue Hawaiian Helicopter Tours – Kauai Eco Adventure

Price: From $389 Duration: 50 minutes

Blue Hawaiian's Kauai Eco Adventure affords travelers the chance to see the beauty of Kauai from an otherworldly perspective. Narrated by the pilot, who's also a certified guide, the flight takes you to Manawaiopuna Falls, also known as "Jurassic Park" falls, Olokele Canyon, through the beautiful Waimea Canyon, and along Kauai's north shore, which features the stunning sea cliffs of the Napali Coast. Depending on the weather, you may also be able to view Mount Waialeale, a dormant volcano known as one of the "wettest places on Earth," that receives around 450 inches of rain each year. Reviewers report that the tour is excellent, fun and a must-do in Kauai. They also praise the pilot's commentary.

Flights are available daily starting at 8 a.m. Blue Hawaiian also operates private charters on Kauai.

Check prices & availability on:

Mauna Loa Helicopter Tours – Kauai Helicopter Tour

Price: From $359 Duration: 1 hour

Mauna Loa Helicopter Tours offers private tours of the Garden Island with up to four passengers on each flight. The Kauai Experience tour takes you to see the beauty and wonder of the Napali Coast, the splendor of Waimea Canyon, and if the weather permits, Mount Waialeale. Travelers say the views are fantastic and appreciate the small size of the helicopter, which allows everyone to enjoy a window seat. Visitors who chose to fly with the doors off of the helicopter call the excursion a little nerve-racking at first, but exhilarating.

Children are welcome on the tour, but must be at least 7 years old to fly with the doors on and at least 12 to fly with the doors off. Flights are available daily beginning at 8 a.m. The company also offers a specialized photography tour during which travelers dictate the flight path so they can cater it to their interests.

Safari Helicopters – Deluxe Waterfall Safari

Price: From $309 Duration: 1 hour

Travelers call this tour the highlight of their Kauai vacation thanks to the friendly, skilled pilots and the awe-inspiring views. The flight covers more than 100 miles, featuring lush mountains, dramatic gorges and canyons, waterfalls, and more. Expect to see the unmatched beauty of the Napali Coast, Waimea Canyon and many of the most famous natural wonders on the island.

Flights are offered daily beginning at 8:25 a.m. The company also offers a Canyon Landing Safari, which includes a 30-minute stop at the Kauai Wildlife Refuge.

Ali'i Air Tours & Charters – Kauai Helicopter Tour

Price: From $350 Duration: 1 hour

Ali'i promises no middle seats on its Kauai tour, so each passenger will have exceptional views of Waipo'o falls, Hanapepe Valley, Hanalei Bay and more. Plus, each of its tours are private, so you won't need to share the small helicopter cabin with strangers. Travelers are wowed by the scenery and praise the experienced pilots; a few reviewers were repeat passengers. Some recommended opting for the doors-off option for an extra thrill.

Tours depart several times daily throughout the morning and afternoon. Ali'i also runs an airplane tour of Kauai, as well as a Pearl Harbor airplane tour, which departs from Kauai and spends the day at the Oahu memorial.

Air Ventures Hawaii – Big Kahuna Kauai Air Tour

Price: From $169 Duration: 1 hour

Eco-conscious tourists may want to consider this tour from Air Ventures Hawaii. According to the company, its GippsAero GA8 Airvan uses less fuel than a typical helicopter. Plus, there are no middle seats, so everyone enjoys a thrilling view from the extra-large bubble windows. What's more, the aircraft flies at a slower speed than a helicopter, allowing more time to take in the views. The flight soars past waterfalls, the Kilauea Lighthouse, Lumahai Beach and Waimea Canyon, among other sites. The sights earn rave reviews, and many travelers offer equivalent praise for the pilots.

Flights depart daily in both the morning and afternoon. Air Ventures Hawaii also operates private tours.

Airborne Aviation – Hughes 500 Doors-Off Helicopter

Price: From $319 Duration: 50 minutes

If you're up for an adventure, or just want to capture some spectacular photos, consider this doors-off tour from Airborne Aviation. Flights are limited to four passengers, meaning everyone enjoys a window seat. Without the barrier of windows or doors, you'll be able to snap incredible images of Kauai’s shoreline, waterfalls and canyons. Flyers rave about the views and the skilled, professional pilots. Reviewers do warn, however, that without doors or windows, the ride is quite windy.

Flights are offered daily starting as early as 8:15 a.m. Private tours are also an option.

Frequently Asked Questions

Fees for Kauai helicopter tours start at $309 per person. However, prices will vary by company, tour length and inclusions.

Tipping is not required, but if you'd like to provide a monetary gesture of gratitude to your pilot/guide, plan to tip between $15 and $20 per person.

Weight limits may vary based on the aircraft, but Federal Aviation Administration regulations state that individual passengers cannot weigh more than 275 pounds and the total group cannot weigh than 650 pounds. LAS VEGAS ( KVVU /Gray News) - A Las Vegas guest from Hawaii is now a millionaire after winning a massive jackpot while visiting a downtown casino.

Warning: this episode contains strong language, descriptions of explicit content and sexual harassment

A disturbing new problem is sweeping American schools: Students are using artificial intelligence to create sexually explicit images of their classmates and then share them without the person depicted even knowing.

Natasha Singer, who covers technology, business and society for The Times, discusses the rise of deepfake nudes and one girl’s fight to stop them.

On today’s episode

Natasha Singer , a reporter covering technology, business and society for The New York Times.

A girl and her mother stand next to each other wearing black clothing. They are looking into the distance and their hair is blowing in the wind.

Background reading

Using artificial intelligence, middle and high school students have fabricated explicit images of female classmates and shared the doctored pictures.

Spurred by teenage girls, states have moved to ban deepfake nudes .
