Live reviews

Although Ween never seemed to make it into the mainstream with their wild and wacky music, they garnered a large cult fan base with their catchy rock tunes mixed with their fun antics.

Like other musicians that adopted their band name as pseudonyms such as the Ramones, the main members of Ween also did the same thing. Dean Ween and Gene Ween have a great chemistry together that allows them to inspire each other to make interesting and experimental music. Ween has been known to mix various genres into their sound such as punk, country, funk, and psychedelic music. Gene Ween is the lead singer of the band and manipulates his voice in absurd ways to get interesting sounds. Ween has the ability to blast out heavy metal songs and then immediately start playing acoustic guitars while singing in a style similar to Simon and Garfunkel. The band also incorporates synthesizers into their music to occasionally emulate some psychedelic sounds.

Ween is highly energetic live. Gene Ween often runs around the stage with the microphone in his hand, bellowing his lyrics out to the audience. Dean Ween is moving all around stage and rocking out to his heavy guitar riffs. The band usually has their signature logo of a spiked hair boy displayed in the background. Their light show is also magnificent, conveying great displays of psychedelic lights. Although Ween is known to play some wild music like the psychedelic, rockabilly sounding “I’ll Be Your Jonny On The Spot”, they also play beautiful, intricate tunes such as “The Argus” that clearly conveys their talented musical abilities. Ween covers a great bit of their material during their performances and gives every ounce of energy they have in order to perform a phenomenal show.

Saw Ween in Montreal in 1999. Have to say one of the best live concerts I have ever seen. Simply amazing energy and dare I say musical virtuosity from the brothers ween and their smoking band. Played all their hits and then some, over 2 1/2 hours and literally refused to leave the stage when the club owners wanted to start their crappy Disco. In the end the plug was pulled on them but still they kept playing, absolute legends. Long Live Ween!

Ween isn't a live band: they are THE live band. If you haven't found this out by listening to their live albums, you'll find this out soon enough by seeing them perform. This is their natural habitat, freeing them to all the room to jam and joke that the band ever needed. I can't recommend them if you don't like their records, but if you do, they stand taller onstage than they ever did in your headphones.

I havent seen Gene and Dean for a LONG TIME! Since they had their troubles and solo time. This tour was amazing!!! They were able to show the kids that two old geezers could still rock n' roll!!! Artpark is an absolute OUTSTANDING VENUE! 10/10!!!!

Joe_Bagodonuts’s profile image

It is definitely an experience. They play long shows and can pretty much play anything in their catalog at anytime. The band is super tight and can also spontaneously improvise. The demon god Boognish casts an approving gaze upon the spectacle.

Setlists and shows, 7/20/2024 - new show, setlist added on old date.

A few years ago, compelling evidence arose to indicate that the show at Chapter One Books in New Brunswick, which was previously thought to have happened on August 31st, 1994, did in fact occur on September 26th, 1994. Now new evidence has arisen to indicate that it happened on both dates - there were two shows at Chapter One! 8/31/94 has been reinstated in the database, with the correct setlist this time, which debuted five songs and is nearly identical to the following show at Demarest Dorm. Enjoy words and numbers here ...

Features, Bug Fixes, Shit like that

4/10/2020 - bugs fixed.

Code on setlist pages that calculates Misc Stats was erroneously counting teases, incompletes and the like before averaging Shows Since Last and Shows Until Next, which resulted in those numbers being much too low. This has been fixed.

And there was a similar bug in the code that calculates Songs by Album and Songs Debuted that would not count a song that was both played and teased at the same show. This has also been fixed. Brownbase deeply regrets this lamentable oversight, but is not in a position to reimburse resulting therapy expenditures.

The Boognish giveth and the Boognish taketh away. On Monday night, Ween canceled its four remaining August tour dates. The second such multi-show cancellation to befall the band’s 40th-anniversary tour , this latest news arrives just days after the band returned to the stage for its first concerts since February.

Initially announced in January and expanded in February, Ween’s 40th-anniversary tour was due to include seven shows in April 2024 and an additional seven in August 2024. In early March, the band announced that it was canceling the April dates but keeping the previously announced August concerts in place. With this latest set of cancellations, which encompasses scheduled shows in Seattle, WA (8/6), Portland, OR (8/8, 8/9), and Eugene, OR (8/10), the tour’s scheduled 14-date itinerary has now come to a close after just three performances. The band is still scheduled to celebrate the 30th anniversary of Chocolate and Cheese at  The Mann Center for the Performing Arts in Philadelphia on September 27th , currently the band’s only scheduled tour date.

“We regret to announce that we will have to cancel our shows this week in Seattle, Portland and Eugene,” the band wrote on social media. “We love performing for the best fans in the world, and we are beyond disappointed we won’t be able to do these shows. All tickets will be refunded at point of purchase. Thanks as always for the love and support.”

Ween did not offer an explanation for this latest round of cancelations. When the band wiped its April tour dates , guitarist  Mickey “Dean Ween” Melchiondo issued an earnest letter to fans stating, “At this moment in time though I need to step away from performing live in order to preserve my mental and spiritual well being.” Drummer Claude Coleman Jr. also sat for an interview last week in which he said that he caught “a bit of a cold” after arriving in Missoula, MT for the band’s weekend run, but said he tested negative for COVID.

Ween made its all-too-brief return to the stage on Friday and Saturday for concerts in Missoula followed by a Sunday show in Spokane, WA. At the second show in Missoula, the band delivered the first-ever live performance of “Makin’ Love in the Gravy” from 1999’s semi-official Craters of the Sac odds-and-ends digital-only album (leaked by Deaner). On Friday, the band also issued a 30th anniversary of  Chocolate and Cheese re-release with 15 additional tracks, including recordings of several songs that had never circulated.

Get well soon, Ween. Hail Boognish.

WEEN Announce Dates For 2023 Summer Tour — Their First Extensive Tour Since Reuniting In 2016!

WEEN has unveiled plans for an upcoming US tour – the band’s first extensive national headline run since they reunited in 2016. The newly announced dates begin July 28 at Los Angeles, CA’s famed Greek Theatre and then continue through early September. Highlights of the 14-show run includes visits to Oakland, CA’s Fox Theater (July 29), Morrison, CO’s Red Rocks Amphitheatre (August 3), Chicago, IL’s Salt Shed Outdoors (September 9), and New York City’s The Rooftop at Pier 17 (September 14).

Tickets Today Artist Presales begin Wednesday, March 22 at 10:00 am (local) exclusively via https://ween.shop.ticketstoday.com/ . Venue, radio, and local presales – including a special Brooklyn Vegan presale for New York City’s Pier 17 (Password: BOOGNISH) – begin Thursday, March 23 at 10:00 am (local). All presales conclude Thursday, March 23 at 10:00 pm (local). All remaining tickets will be released to the general public on Friday, March 24 at 12:00 pm (ET)/9:00 am (PT). For complete details and ticket availability, please see ween.com/tour .

The upcoming headline tour follows an already announced series of 2023 live dates set to hit Dallas, TX’s South Side Ballroom (April 25), Houston, TX’s White Oak Music Hall (April 26), and New Orleans, LA’s Orpheum Theater (April 28-29). In addition, Ween will make a festival performance at Scranton, PA’s Peach Music Festival, slated for June 29-July 2.

In addition to the band’s busy live schedule, Ween have also launched an official new webstore, showcasing a wide range of select merch including a webstore exclusive variant on gold foil of Todd Slater’s Las Vegas poster from this past weekend’s shows, and much more, all available exclusively at ween.themerchcollective.com .

Formed as teenagers in 1984 by Aaron Freeman and Mickey Melchiondo, Jr. (better known as Gene and Dean Ween) in New Hope, PA, Ween has taken on a cult-like status with legions of devoted fans around the world. Beginning with six self-released cassettes in the 1980s followed by 11 studio albums, six live albums, and a smattering of EPs through the 1990s and 2000s, Ween’s recorded output is far-reaching in its styles moving from rock to punk to psychedelic to country to alternative and all points in between.

However, it’s the band’s live shows that have truly cultivated its diehard fan base. In 2016, more than four years after their last performance, Ween reunited for three instantly sold-out shows in Broomfield, CO and New York, NY, made headline and festival appearances across the country, and released GodWeenSatan: Live – their first live album since 2008. Since then, the band has performed sold-out headline shows and festival appearances, including multiple night stands at such legendary venues as New York City’s Beacon Theatre, Nashville, TN’s Ryman Auditorium, Port Chester, NY’s Capitol Theatre, Los Angeles, CA’s The Wiltern, and Morrison, CO’s Red Rocks Amphitheatre, to name only a few.

Ween consists of Gene and Dean Ween alongside longtime band members Claude Coleman, Jr. (drums), Dave Dreiwitz (bass) and Glenn McClelland (keyboards).
