What to Look for in a Jerry Can

Jerry cans have an interesting history stemming back to World War II. These sturdy German-designed fuel cans were first used in 1937 and were famous for transporting fuel reliably and safely during the war.

When the Allied Forces came across these gas cans, they were impressed at how much sturdier and better the construction was and dubbed them “jerry” cans (the word “jerry” was slang for “German” among U.S. and British troops).

Jerry cans come in all shapes and sizes to suit the needs of every overlander. Traditionally, these fuel storage containers were only available in metal construction, but lately plastic containers have been coming onto the market.

Price is a major determining factor in the quality of jerry can you’ll get. However, choosing the best jerry can does not depend on price alone. Your jerry can must be vapor-tight and not vent and build up pressure when storing fuel for long-term usage. If it does, it is likely counterfeit and can be dangerous to you and your vehicle.

Below, we’ll look at some of the top factors to consider when picking out a jerry can for your overlanding trip:

Construction Quality

The old adage stands true: you get what you pay for!

While metal cans generally last longer than plastic cans due to the durability and reliability of the material, you can find high-quality plastic cans. Whether you prefer metal or plastic, choose a can that will ensure the safe short-term and long-term storage of your fuel.

Size and Capacity

When choosing your jerry can, consider the size and capacity of the gas can. Getting a small 1–2-gallon jerry can as opposed to a larger 4-gallon one is pointless if you have a truck or SUV, as the capacity of the vehicle’s fuel tank will far outweigh that of the jerry can. This reduced capacity means that you’ll have to fuel more regularly or buy more gas cans for your trip.

Ease of Use

When searching for a gas can, look for convenience and safety features, such as the following:

  • Automatic closure features (e.g., auto-closing nozzles)
  • Child-proof and locking functionality
  • Flexible pouring spouts
  • Leak-proof and permeation-resistant construction
  • Stackability

These features make a gas can much easier to use and ensure that you comply with the current EPA , CARB , and DOT regulations on portable fuel containers.

No overlanding trip would be complete without a gas can. Gas cans prevent the inconvenience of running out of gas in the middle of nowhere and give you peace of mind on all your trips.

When compiling our list of the best off-road gas cans, we chose the above-mentioned cans for their reliability, durability, affordability, and ease of use. When making your choice, the best gas storage container for you should suit your needs for the types of trips you tend to take.

Editors’ Choice: Fuel Storage for Overlanding

  • William Roberson
  • October 26, 2023

Our overlanding adventures are fueled by fuel, of course, which in this day and age means gasoline, diesel, and, more recently, electricity. Loading up for a long trip off the beaten path usually means adding some fuel storage to the mix, and combustibles like gasoline need to be handled with great care. Here’s a short primer on how to safely transport extra fuel and the best containers that will keep you safe.

Gas Can 101: Safe Fuel Container Types and Colors

Since transporting fuel involves the risk of fire and explosion, both OSHA and the DOT have had their say in the U.S. on what makes a safe gas can or “jerry can,” as they are also known. In general terms, they must be made of “metal or polyethylene (aka plastic) construction,” and “they must have flame arresters, self-closing lids, pressure relief, and 100% leak testing features.”

While gas cans come in various shapes, sizes, and capacities, in general, they are one of two approved types: Type I containers, which most of us recognize and have at home, have  one  opening for both filling the can and dispensing the fuel. Type II containers, which are a bit fancier, have both a fill and dispense opening.

Land Cruiser driving down a dirt road in the desert.

Type II gas cans can typically dispense fuel more quickly, and so are better for larger fuel loads, but Type I cans are the most common by far. Also, the maximum capacity for both is five gallons for an approved fuel container. Yes, you can get larger capacities for commercial applications, but typically, you’ll fill containers with five gallons or less.

In general, if you buy a gas or jerry can at any U.S. auto parts retailer, gas station, or from a U.S.-based online retailer, it will likely meet those safety specifications. If you buy a super-cheap fuel carrier from some sketchy website and it takes six weeks to arrive, you may be taking some unneeded risks regarding quality and durability. Be sure to research your purchase carefully.

What About Motorcycles?

Overlanding via motorbike puts special pressure on the fuel supply since motorcycles typically can’t carry nearly as much fuel, although adventure bikes tend to have larger gas tanks, and there are many aftermarket options for fitting a larger-than-stock gas tank.

Outside of getting a bigger main tank, there are essentially three options. The first is a Rotopax-type fuel cell mounted to the bike itself, typically on a rear rack, but I’ve also seen them mounted to the front crash bars. Obviously, a hard crash may result in a spill, so riders will have to determine how much risk they want to take with their fuel supply when locating it on the bike.

travel gas container

Another popular option for riders is a fuel bottle. These metal bottles completely seal the fuel in, so there’s little chance of spilling, and they can be tucked into saddlebags or, more often, strapped to the back of a saddlebag (as below), allowing riders to carry multiple bottles. Typically, a fuel bottle holds 750 milliliters (25 ounces), which is the same capacity as a typical bottle of wine. However, you can get bottles up to 30 ounces. That might not sound like much, but when the main tank runs dry, the 20 miles or so it can get a bike might be enough to get you back to a road or that small town with a pump. That’s why many riders often carry several fuel bottles if possible.

Another less common option is a fuel “bladder,” or what is essentially a specially designed soft “bag” for gasoline similar to a hydration bag. More popular in Australia and Europe, fuel bladders might seem a bit iffy in terms of safety, but they offer larger capacities (up to 20 liters/4.4 gallons). When mounted correctly, typically on the bike’s tail section or atop a hard pannier so they are protected in case of a tip-over, they are highly reliable in terms of safety. Still, it is a “bag” of fuel, so use extreme care when using fuel bladders.

Best Jerry Cans for Overlanding

Let’s look at some of the best fuel storage/gas can options you should consider for your travels.

RotopaX Fuel Container

RotopaX Gasoline Pack

Available in sizes from one to four gallons, these are perfect for motorcycles and four-wheel vehicles. RotopaX Gasoline Packs are made in the USA from high-strength plastic and are individually pressure tested, ensuring a quality, leak-free product. These gas cans can mount to any flat surface using RotoPAX’s proprietary mounts (sold separately) or your manufacturer’s bumper or gas can mounting hardware. They can also be securely stacked when mounted for expanding capacity. Rotopax offers yellow, orange, black, and white containers as well for storing different types of liquids.

MSRP $79.95–$134.95

Front Runner – 20 Liter Metal Jerry Can

travel gas container

Front Runner Outfitters provide overlanders with a wide array of necessary trail gear, so it makes perfect sense they have the fuel category covered. This 20-liter jerry can features an internal breather, a splash-proof pouring spout, and an interior coated with Rezol to prevent rusting.

MSRP: $87.95

Front Runner Double Jerry Can Holder

travel gas container

There are a variety of mounting options for Jerry Cans, but regardless of what you go with, be sure that it’s secure. A fuel spill is no laughing matter, so relying on bungee cords or other improvise options for securing Jerry Cans is a bad idea. Instead, go with a trusted solution like this mount from Front Runner. It can carry two full-sized Jerry Cans, and it’s lockable, so your fuel is secured.

MSR 30-ounce Fuel Bottle

travel gas container

MSR fuel bottles are a favorite of adventure motorcycle riders. All-steel construction can withstand most impacts, and the cap seals completely, keeping gas and vapors in the bottle in rough conditions. Available in sizes from 11 to 30 ounces. Thirty ounces of gas may not seem like much, but on a smaller motorbike, it could mean another 20 or 30 miles worth of riding back to civilization. Many riders carry more than one. They also fit standard fuel stove supply connection caps for use as a cooking fuel supply.

Desert Fox 20-liter Fuel Bladder

travel gas container

Desert Fox makes fuel bladders for motorcycle riders in sizes from three or six liters and even 20 liters – or over 4 gallons. So, depending on your adventure, you have options. The bladders feature numerous tied-down rings, multiple handles for easy pouring, a built-in spout storage pocket, and a tough canvas exterior. Desert Fox says the bladders are military-grade. They can also carry water or other liquids, but once you put gas in, you might want to earmark that bladder just for gas to be safe.

  • What To Look For
  • Why Trust The Spruce

The Spruce / Lecia Landis

A gas can is the best way to store, transport, and dispense gasoline. Plastic gas cans are lightweight and convenient, while metal gas cans are more durable but heavier and more expensive.

The best gas cans have usability features like comfortable handles and flexible spouts to prevent spills, so you won't need to clean gasoline out of your clothes . They also have safety features like pressure relief valves, automatic shutoff valves, flame arrestors, and child-resistant caps.

Tim Love , Senior Director of Logistics Operations at Carson, recommends metal gas cans because they’re more durable and carry a lower risk of static electricity sparking a fire when dispensing fuel. Plastic cans with safety spouts and flame arrestors provide added safety, but plastic is easier to damage than metal, and plastic can also degrade over time due to UV exposure from the sun.

With that in mind, we researched both plastic and metal gas cans in a variety of sizes and capacities, with important safety and ease of use features, to find the best options for filling up different types of equipment.

Best Overall

Briggs & stratton garageboss press 'n pour gas can.

Long spout and flow control

Integrated flame mitigation

Child-safety cap with on-can cap holder

Lifting and tilting can be cumbersome

The Briggs & Stratton GarageBoss Press 'N Pour Can is our favorite gas can because it features durable construction, a long spout with flow control, and vital safety features like integrated flame mitigation and a child-safety cap. It can be cumbersome to lift and tilt when fully loaded, but the long spout makes it easy to deliver the gas where it needs to be with minor spillage. This gas can is made of durable plastic that's compliant with CARB (California Air Resources Board) and EPA (Environmental Protection Agency) emissions standards. You can choose from a 2.5- or 5-gallon capacity, both of which are good for gas-powered lawn equipment like chainsaws , large generators , and commercial machinery.

We like how easy it is to pour and control the flow with the push-button dispenser—no twisting or anchoring necessary. Once you're done, just release the button to stop dispensing. If you're using it for larger machines, you can unscrew the spout extension to access a faster flow rate. This allows you to pour more quickly and empty the can without spills.

The GarageBoss has a few other notable features, including integrated flame mitigation technology that lowers the chances of certain types of fires and explosions. It also includes a child-safety cap that prevents tampering, keeps fumes from escaping, and minimizes spills. The can even has a built-in cap holder, so you don't need to worry about setting the cap down and losing track of it because it's always right there.

Capacity: 2.5–5 gallons | Material: Plastic | Features: Push-button dispenser, long spout, precise flow control, dust cap holder, flame mitigation

Best Budget

Easy can 2.5 gal. gasoline can.

Durable, low-emission thermoplastic

Easy lifting and user-friendly dispensing

Child-safe, flame-mitigating design

Can be tricky to fill

Easy Can is a basic gas can with some essential safety features, which is why we recommend it as a lower-cost option. It's usually priced about 30 percent less than the 2.5 gallon version of the Stens No-Spill can (our best spill-resistant pick). It isn't quite as spill-resistant, but it does have an Easy On, Easy Off nozzle that's both accurate and high volume.

This sturdy fuel can is made of polyethylene (PE), a high-strength thermoplastic you can count on to hold up for many years. And since it's compliant with EPA and CARB environmental standards, you can have peace of mind knowing it won't emit harmful chemicals. It has a patented nozzle with user-friendly push-button dispensing, making it easy to add fuel to all types of lawn equipment and machinery without spills or drips.

This 2.5-gallon container is a good option for those who find 5-gallon cans too heavy to lift and tilt. It boasts a fast flow rate of up to 3 GPM (gallons per minute). We also appreciate the safety features, which include a child-resistant design and an integrated FMD (flame mitigation device). The flame mitigator helps minimize the chance of certain types of fires and explosions.

While this can makes short work of dispensing fuel, filling the can itself can be tricky because the FMD is located right at the opening. With that in mind, filling the can as slowly as possible reduces the chances of splashing or spillage, neither of which are concerns when dispensing from the can.

Capacity: 2.5 gallons | Material: Polyethylene | Features: Patented nozzle, flame mitigator

Eagle UI-10-FS Type I Safety Can

Resists rust, corrosion, and extreme temps

Easy pouring with comfort trigger and funnel

Meets various third-party safety criteria

Largest size is cumbersome

Lead exposure warning

This Eagle fuel can is made of powder-coated, 24-gauge galvanized steel, an exceptionally durable material that resists rust, corrosion, and extreme temperatures. It's pricier than most plastic gas containers, but you can expect the leak-tested design to last several years—maybe even decades.

This can comes in a few sizes, ranging from 1 to 5 gallons. Although the largest option can be a bit cumbersome to lift, the sturdy handle on top helps. There's also a patented "comfort-grip" trigger and a thermoplastic funnel, which makes it easy to dispense the fuel exactly where you want it to go.

One thing to note is that this product has a Proposition 65 warning about potential lead exposure. However, the manufacturer says it's been tested and approved for safety by multiple third-party organizations, including UL Solutions and FM Approvals .

As a Type I safety can, it meets OSHA (Occupational Safety and Health Administration) standards and NFPA (National Fire Protection Association) Code 30 requirements for flammable and combustible liquids. This well-made metal gas can also has a flame arrester screen for additional safety.

Capacity: 1–5 gallons | Material: Galvanized steel | Features: Patented trigger release, funnel, flame arrester screen

Best Safety Features

Justrite accuflow type ii safety can.

Safety trigger with precise pouring

Prevents static spark and flashback ignition

Extremely durable with 10-year warranty

Pretty large

The Justrite AccuFlow Safety Can is our favorite gas can in terms of safety features. Made of powder-coated, 24-gauge galvanized stainless steel, it's incredibly sturdy and resistant to corrosion, rust, and extreme temperatures.

This can features the brand's Safe-Squeeze trigger and a flexible 9-inch hose, which allows for controlled, precise dispensing into small openings while preventing static sparks in the event grounding wire is used. It also has an integrated stainless steel flame arrester designed to prevent flashback ignition. This gas can has two openings, which further improves safety. One opening is for targeted pouring, and the other has an ergonomic lift lever that makes filling up without spilling a breeze.

Justrite Safety cans are available in a few sizes and colors, which is useful if you store more multiple fuel types in the same location. This gas container is third-party tested and certified by UL Solutions, FM Approvals, and TÜV SÜD and meets NFPA and OSHA safety requirements for fuel storage. This can is more expensive than most portable options—it's twice the price of the plastic SureCan Type II (our pick for lawn mowers)—but it's well worth the investment from a safety standpoint. The manufacturer also provides a long 10-year warranty, but you will unlikely need it with such durable construction.

Capacity: 1–5 gallons | Material: Galvanized steel | Features: Safety trigger, 9-inch hose, flame arrester, targeted pouring

Best for Lawn Mowers

Surecan type ii safety can.

Flexible rotating spout with flow control

Large capacity fueling all your equipment

Meets third-party and government safety criteria

May leak when swiveling the spout

Lawn mowers (especially newer models) often have recessed fill tubes, which can complicate the fueling process. If your lawn mower (or any of your gas-powered equipment) has a recessed fill tube, our favorite solution is the SureCan Type II. Made of high-density polyethylene, this big gas can has a 5-gallon capacity, which is perfect for filling mowers and equipment with larger tanks, with a flexible spout that takes all the hassle out of delivering fuel to a recessed fill tube. This can is exceptionally easy to use, with a flexible spout that swivels 180 degrees, allowing for easier access to the fill location, and a thumb-release trigger that lets you control the flow. When you're done dispensing, you can pull back the trigger and release the button to stop the flow before tilting it back upright. You might notice some minor leaking around the swivel spout when twisting it, but the container generally does a good job of eliminating spills and doesn't leak when the spout is stationary

Unlike Type I cans, which have just one opening, this Type II safety can has two openings. One is for filling, and the other is for pouring—the fill opening also acts as a vent when you're dispensing fuel. The SureCan is third-party tested by FM Approvals and accepted by the EPA and CARB for emissions safety. It also meets OSHA criteria for occupational safety and MSHA (Mine Safety and Health Administration) regulations for fuel storage and dispensing.

Capacity: 5 gallons | Material: Polyethylene | Features: Rotating spout, thumb-control trigger, self-ventilating design

Best User-Friendly

Scepter smartcontrol gas can.

Hassle-free, controlled dispensing

Fast flow rate without spills or drips

Dual handles for easy maneuvering

May leak when filled to the brim

Flame arrestor gets in the way when filling

The Scepter SmartControl Gas Can is the best option if you're looking for a basic can that just works without any hassle, which is why it's our recommendation for the best user-friendly gas can. Made to minimize frustration, the hassle-free design has a squeeze-controlled dispenser to adjust the flow rate, and an in-spout air vent.

The benefit of having an adjustable flow rate and built-in air vent is that you get the exact flow rate you want for the tank you're filling. You can pour it slowly if necessary or as fast as 3 gallons per minute without worrying about spills or drips.

While this can is designed to avoid leaks and spills, it can leak when overfilled. Fortunately, that's easy enough to avoid by following best practices and not filling the can beyond 95 percent. Filling beyond about 95 percent of capacity can result in spillage, even in cans that aren't prone to spills or leaks.

The other issue with this can is that the flame arrestor get in the way of filling the can. It isn't a big problem when filling from another can, but it makes it can be difficult and time-consuming to fill directly from the pump at a gas station (Scepter released an instructional video showing how to place the gas nozzle in the flame arrestor to achieve the best results).

We like that the SmartControl Can has two handles (one on top and one on the back), which makes it easier to lift and tip without losing control. This portable fuel container is intended for refilling gas-powered yard equipment and tools, like riding lawnmowers, rototillers, and chainsaws, as well as motorcycles, campers, ATVs, boats, and other recreational vehicles. It also meets EPA and CARB emissions standards and ASTM safety criteria for fuel containers.

Capacity: 5 gallons | Material: Plastic | Features: Squeeze pour, SmartControl spout, fast flow rate, rear handle, flame mitigation

Best Spill-Resistant

No-spill 1450 gasoline can.

Prevents spills, leaks, or drips

Thumb-controlled pouring

Dual handles for easy lifting and tilting

Narrow fill opening

As the name suggests, the No-Spill 1450 Gas Can promises never to spill. This fuel container is made of highly resilient, long-lasting polyethylene thermoplastic. It's molded and fused with minimal seams to ensure liquids don't seep through, and the material holds up remarkably well in extreme temperatures.

Beyond the sturdiness of the can itself, the spill-free design is all contained in the spout and nozzle. Despite the fast flow rate of up to 3 gallons per minute, the push-button nozzle gives you complete control over how much you want to dispense. Flow stops when you release the button, so you don't need to worry about spills, splashes, or dribbling. This can works flawlessly when fueling openings that are easy to reach, but the nozzle is very short. If you need to fuel a boat, off road vehicle, or anything else that has a hard-to-reach opening, consider picking up the 6-inch Flex Spout Extension . It doesn't interfere with the no-spill spout function but makes it much easier to fuel troublesome equipment.

Unlike most other portable gas cans, this one includes handles on the top and side, making it easy to lift, tilt, and position in different ways. It doesn't leak, and it eliminates accidental overflows and drips. But since the fill opening is narrower, you just want to be careful and go slow when refilling the container with fuel.

In terms of safety, the No-Spill Can meets CARB and EPA emissions standards and is compliant with the CPSC (Consumer Product Safety Commission).

Capacity: 2.5–5 gallons | Material: Plastic | Features: Push-button dispenser, fast flow rate, automatic stop

Best Gas Caddy

Scepter usa duramax flo n' go transfer pump and gas can.

Gravity feed and pump

Easy to move around

Large capacity

Slow flow when pumping

Very heavy when full

If you need easy access to a large volume of gas for your fleet of mowers, ATVs, jet skis, boat, or other equipment, the Scepter Flo N’ Go Duramax provides a convenient way to haul and dispense up to 14 gallons of gas. It’s quite heavy when fully loaded (about 120 pounds), but the built-in wheels and comfortable handle make it easy to bring to your equipment instead of the other way around.

Our favorite thing about this gas caddy is that it provides two ways to fuel your equipment, including a gravity feed option and a pump option. It also includes a long 10 foot fuel hose with an anti-kink sheath at the base, which solves an issue with an earlier version of this caddy where the hose would kink too easily.

Gravity feed requires you to lift the container up above the equipment you’re filling (not always an easy task), while the pump mode lets you leave the container on the ground at the cost of having to manually squeeze the handle to transfer fuel. The flow rate is slower when pumping, but it’s nice to have the option for those times where it isn’t feasible to lift the container up above your equipment.

We also like how easy it is to move this container around, even when full. It’s too heavy to comfortably pick up and carry, but the wheels take care of that. It also has a full set of safety features, including brass shutoff valves and a child safety lock.

We prefer metal cans for long term storage, like the Justrite 5 Gallon Type II Safety Gas Can (our best safety features pick), but we think this caddy is a great option for fueling up a lot of equipment at once, or even rolling down to the dock to fill up your boat and avoid high marine fuel prices.

Capacity : 14 gallons | Material : Polyethylene | Features : Manual pump handle, wheels, anti-kink hose, brass shut off valves

Final Verdict

The best overall gas can is the Briggs & Stratton GarageBoss Press 'N Pour Gas Can , which has a long spout, controlled flow, integrated flame mitigation, and a child-safety cap. If you need the additional safety and durability of metal, we highly recommend the Eagle UI-10-FS Type I Galvanized Steel Safety Can (our best metal pick).

What to Look for in a Gas Can

Size, volume, and ease of use.

When you start looking for a gas can, you can narrow down the options by thinking about what size you need. Gas can sizes are measured in gallons, so bigger cans hold more gas and can refuel more equipment before needing to be refilled.

Gas cans usually have capacities ranging from 1 to 5 gallons, and gas weighs about six pounds per gallon, so also take that into consideration—a 5 gallon can will weigh about 28 pounds (for a plastic can) or about 32 pounds (for a metal can). If you're uncomfortable lifting and holding that weight, then a few smaller cans could be the better choice.

Many gas cans come in multiple sizes, so you can also identify the feature set you want (like a spill-proof nozzle, comfortable handles, or multiple spouts) and then choose the size that suits your needs. For example, we recommend the 5 gallon No-Spill 1450 Poly Gasoline Can as our best spill-resistant pick, but the No-Spill 1415 has all the same features in a 1.25 can.

In the case of those No-Spill cans, the 5-gallon container makes it faster and easier to fill large tanks, but the 1.25-gallon version is much easier to lift and is sufficient for filling smaller tanks like lawn mowers and line trimmers.

Construction Materials

Most gas cans are made of plastic or metal. Plastic cans are lighter and easier to handle, but metal cans are more durable. "We recommend metal gas cans for their durability, fire resistance, and reduced risk of sparks from static electricity while dispensing," says Love.

Metal cans are durable and resilient, but they're also heavier and tend to be more expensive. Metal is also prone to corrosion, but that can be mitigated by choosing the right metal and finish. Powder-coated galvanized steel is a particularly strong material that's resistant to rust, corrosion, and extreme temperatures.

The Eagle UI-10-FS Type I Galvanized Steel Safety Can (our best metal pick) meets the stringent Type I Safety Can standards, includes a non-sparking flame arrestor, a self-closing lid to minimize spills, comfort grip handles, and a powder-coated finish to protect against corrosion, so we think it's an excellent choice for anyone who wants a metal gas can.

Plastic cans are lightweight and you don't need to worry about corrosion, but they're more susceptible to punctures and cracking, and plastic can degrade when exposed to UV from the sun for long periods of time.

That said, we think that the plastic Briggs and Stratton Press 'N Poor Gas Can (our best overall recommendation) is an excellent general purpose choice if you want a lighter weight option with an ergonomic design, EPA and CARB compliance, a child-proof cap, and a built-in flame mitigation device, especially if you avoid leaving it out in the sun.

Nozzle Types

The nozzle is the part of the gas can that delivers gas to your equipment, so choosing one that will work with the equipment you need to fuel up is important. For example, the long, rotating nozzle included with the SureCan Type II (our best for lawn mowers pick) is great for recessed fill tubes in lawn mowers, generators, and other equipment that would otherwise require a funnel.

Some nozzles are designed for easy operation, adjustable fill rate, and include other useful features. We especially like push-button dispensers and long spouts, like the Briggs & Stratton GarageBoss Press 'N Pour Gas Can (our best overall pick), for ease of use, good flow control, and targeted filling to avoid spills.

Some nozzles provide more than one operation mode, like the Scepter Flow N' Go Duramax (our best gas caddy pick), which has a 10 foot hose and a nozzle that you can pump manually or use in a gravity-fed mode.

It's also important to distinguish between Type I and Type II cans. Type I safety cans have just one opening you use to fill and dispense the fuel. Type II cans like the Justrite AccuFlow Galvanized Steel Vented Can (our pick for the best safety features) have two openings, one for filling and one for dispensing.

Usage Locations and Purposes

Different types of cans work best in different situations, so think about where and how you'll use the gas can before you make a final decision.

Some containers, such as the Scepter SmartControl Gas Can (our best user-friendly pick), are intended primarily for filling gas-powered lawn equipment, like chainsaws and line trimmers, and gas-powered toys like ATVs.

Large Type II cans with long spouts and rotating nozzles like the  SureCan Type II Safety Can  (our best for lawn mowers pick) can be used in those same situations, but they're especially good for equipment with larger tanks and recessed fill tubes.

How long does gas last in a gas can?

According to Love, fuel will last six months to a year in a gas can. "The type of gasoline and the conditions the gas is stored in matters," Love advises. "Regular gasoline typically has a shorter shelf life than premium gasoline that has added stabilizers."

If you plan on storing gas for any amount of time, it's important to select a can that's designed for that purpose. Love tells us that gas cans can be safely stored in a garage , but only when taking the proper safety measures. "Use sealed metal cans whenever possible," he advises. "Make sure they are out of reach from children and not stored next to water heaters, furnaces, or anything with an open spark."

The Justrite 5 Gallon Type II Safety Gas Can (our best safety features pick) is a durable metal can that has all the right features for short term gas storage, as long as you follow all the necessary safety precautions.

travel gas container

Gas is never more than a drive away for most people, but sometimes you just don't have time to stop on the way to work or another important appointment. Or maybe you've run out of gas at an inconvenient moment, leaving you stranded. That's why it's important to have a gas can full of the good stuff that makes your car go. But you shouldn't just buy any gas can. You'll need one that can be transported safely between the gas station and your home. That means you'll need to be able to carry it and use it on your own -- and you definitely don't want any gasoline vapors leaking from it.

There are plenty of gas cans on the market to choose from, depending on your needs. From gas cans that will live in the garage to jerry cans that can live on your vehicle, I've rounded up some of the best gas cans available today based on hands-on experience by the CNET Cars staff and user reviews at popular shopping sites. Whatever your needs, you should be able to find the best gas can for your individual situation below. After sifting through our favorite fuel can picks make sure to read on afterwards for some helpful gas can tips.

Garage Boss Press 'N Pour Gasoline Can

Best gas can overall.

We like this Garage Boss Press 'N Pour 2+ plastic gas can for its size, price and safety features. Two gallons is enough to keep on hand for your lawn-care toys and it features a child safety cap and a flame mitigation device. To pour just press a button forward and watch the fuel flow through the translucent spout. Further, this plastic gas can is EPA and CARB compliant, so you don't have to worry about fumes escaping. Out of 5,000-plus buyer ratings on Amazon, 71% are five stars. All this for just $17. The Press 'N Pour gasoline can is also available in a 5-gallon model.

Midwest Can Gas Can

Best gas can overall runner-up.

This Midwest can is one of the plastic cans a few CNET Cars staffers have in their garages. We like it for the 2-gallon size and the fact that it exceeds CARB and EPA requirements for storing flammable liquid. What can we say? We like cars, but also the environment. Our only quibble is with the safety nozzle. On first glance it's not apparent exactly how it works, but a quick YouTube search provides the answer and there's no gas spillage from then on out. If you need more gas storage capacity, the plastic Midwest Can is also available with a 5-gallon capacity.

Eagle Galvanized Steel Type 1 Gasoline Safety Can

Best metal gas can.

If you're looking for a metal gas can that is made in the USA by a family-owned company, look no further than the Eagle 5 Gallon Red Safety Gasoline Can. This galvanized steel fuel container features a flame arrestor screen with spring-loaded closure lid and integrated funnel. A neoprene gasket vents at 3-5 psi and there are no top or side seams to spring a leak. Further, these metal cans are both OSHA and CARB approved.

Scepter SmartControl Gas Can 1 Gallon

Best small gas can.

Do you just need to store a little bit of fuel? Check out this 1-gallon Scepter SmartControl Gas Can. The spout is child-proof and requires a bit of finagling, but it also allows the user to control the flow resulting in less unwanted fuel spill. This plastic gas can is CARB and EPA certified and comes with a flame mitigation device.

travel gas container

Scepter Flo-N-Go Fuel Caddy 14 Gallon

Best big gas can.

If you have more than one vehicle to top off, you'll need a large gas can. This fuel tank from Scepter holds 14 gallons and it's on wheels for when you need to bring the gasoline to the car or boat, not the other way around. A 10-foot hose with two shut-off valves make this can even more versatile. When full, you're probably not going to be able to lift it, the company says the unit weighs 112 pounds when full, so this is a siphon-based system. As such, it's not particularly fast being capable of dispensing just two gallons per minute from the nozzle.

travel gas container

Inclake Stainless Steel Gas Can

Best gas can for overlanding runner-up.

This Inclake metal gas can carries over 5 gallons of fuel, so feel free to roam a bit further and wider. This fuel tank is rust-resistant and has three handles so it's easy to have two people lifting it. Remember, a gallon of fuel weighs about 6 pounds. There are no safety spouts to mess around with and the metal fuel cans comes with two spouts and extra o-rings for the cap, spout and vent. And for what it's worth, it's actually pretty good-looking gasoline can, too. If you're looking to haul even more fuel, Inclake also offers these gasoline cans in 8-gallon and 10-gallon models.

Hunsaker USA Quickfill Dumpcan Racing Jug

Best gas can for racing.

If you're racing, fuel stops need to be quick. Why do you think it is called a dump can and not a gasoline can? This guy can dump 5 gallons of fuel in under 5 seconds with a 2.25-inch male dry break. Get it? We use this 5-gallon dump can when just a splash of fuel is needed, and I also have a 11 gallon can for big jobs. Gallon markings are molded on the side, so you know how much you've used and the long handle makes it easy to grip. My pit crew also likes the square shape of these plastic fuel tanks as it's easier to hold on to when adrenaline is running hot.

travel gas container

VP Racing Fuels Square Racing Utility Jug

Best gas can for racing runner-up.

If you're looking for a more affordable motorsports-only fuel can, look no further than the VP Racing Fuels Square Racing Utility Jug. Punching in at around $43, these 5-gallon plastic storage containers are sturdy being made from high-density polyethylene and come in a variety of colors. The included hose and rubber gaskets for the container's cap make pouring a secure, spill-free exercise. This is a container that accompanies several CNET Cars staffers trackside on weekends.

travel gas container

Rotopax Fuelpax Fuel Container

Best gas can for overlanding.

Rotopax offers a pricier fuel can with a 10-year leak free warranty, but these FuelPax gas cans with a 5-year leak free warranty have served some CNET Cars staffers incredibly well. This 2.5-gallon gas container can mount easily to your rig with the (sold separately) Rotopax mount. It's dimensions 20-inch-by-14-inch-by-3.5-inch is pretty flat, so it's easy to find a place for it, whether full of gas and attached to your bed rack or empty and stacked in the garage for storage. In fact, we originally bought these specifically because of a very small area to mount some fuel containers in the back of a Rolls-Royce Cullinan for the Rebelle Rally. The company recommends you vent the tank of gas fumes once a day if elevation or temperatures fluctuate.

While these claim to be general fuel fillers, be sure to check your manual for the proper dimensions before you buy. Then again, at $3 it's a cheap mistake to make.

Comparison of the best gas cans for 2022

The right gas can will store your fuel safely and allow for easy pouring.

Why won't my new car take fuel from a gas can?

This is a problem you may have and not even know of just yet. Newer cars without a separate gas cap have two flaps: one that acts as a closure at the top and a second one further into the filler neck. Often times the spout on a gas can isn't long enough to penetrate that second flap. Further, there is no standardization in terms of how long or how narrow a spout needs to be to deliver gas. Some manufacturers include a funnel with the car, some do not. The last place you want to figure this out is when AAA comes to deliver you a gallon of gas on the side of the road.

Some funnels are made for specific brands, some claim to be a one-size-fits-all. We've included some funnel options above. However, since there is not any standardization, be sure to check your car's manual to find out how long and how narrow the funnel should be before ordering.

Gas can FAQs

What is the difference between type 1 and type 2 gas cans.

Type 1 and Type 2 cans are different kinds of safety cans that are necessary if your business is storing fuel. Thank OSHA for this one, folks. Safety cans are metal, hold five gallons or less and self-vent when exposed to fire. These cans also have a spring-loaded closure. Type 1 cans use one spout to fill and dispense. Type 2 gas cans fill from a separate spout. That spout often does double duty as a vent. Type 2 cans, with their vents, are easier to pour from.

Are metal gas cans or plastic gas cans better?

It all depends on how long you will be storing your fuel. For long-term fuel storage, opt for metal gas cans. The metal cans won't expand or contract with changes in temperature and unlike plastic containers there are no chemicals to leach into the gas, keeping it fresher for a longer period.

However, there is no danger of plastic fuel gas cans developing rust and in case of fire the plastic gas container will just melt, while on the other hand a metal can potentially explode. We don't know about you, but the idea of possibly having a gas can bomb in our garage isn't ideal.

Where is the best place to store a gas can?

Extra fuel should be stored in a well-ventilated garage or shed. You should not store gasoline in your house, no matter what kind of can it's in. It's also a good idea to keep a fire extinguisher nearby because nobody wants to be known as the Safety Third neighbor. Keep in mind that fuel cans are color coded so you shouldn't ever get them mixed up. Red is for gas, yellow is for diesel, blue is for kerosene and green is for oils.

If you regularly operate heavy-duty gas-powered machinery, frequently go on long road trips off the beaten paths, or just want to be prepared in case of emergency, a portable gas can is a must; I would even say essential. Indeed, gas canisters are used to store gas, kerosene, or other petroleum products in preparation for unforeseen situations like power outages or running out of gas in the middle of a trail, far off into the woods. Since gasoline is volatile, highly flammable, and can quickly melt most plastics storing it in just any storage container can be dangerous. Luckily, gas cans are built specifically for this purpose and consequently need to pass a rigorous certification process, proving they can effectively protect the user from potential hazards.

However, if you’ve already started shopping around, you’ll see that it’s fairly is easy to be overwhelmed by the plethora of choices found online, including sub-standard and low-quality models. To help you with that, we’ve curated and reviewed six of the best gas cans we could find. As usual, we tried our best to include a wide range of options, from good all-rounders to models designed with specific activities in mind, such as off-roading, biking, watersports, and even some attachable to ATVs.

Best Gas Can Reviews

1. briggs and stratton garage boss gb351 press ‘n pour gas can — budget pick.

Briggs and Stratton Garage Boss GB351 Press 'N Pour Gas Can — Budget Pick

Briggs and Stratton’s sub-brand, Garage Boss, developed an innovative gas can called the Press ‘N Pour, featuring a push-button-controlled spout. Compared to other conventional gas cans, this unique arrangement allows for precise flow control and prevents gas from sloshing all over the place. No need to say, the Press ‘N Pour comes especially handy when trying to pour gas directly in a vehicle’s gas tank. However, it’s important to mention that the significantly narrower opening means pouring gasoline into your car will take more time. Still, you won’t make a mess so, all in all, I’d say it’s still a good thing.

The Press ‘N Pour gas can is molded from durable plastic compounds specifically selected to handle flammable liquids and is offered in various formats (1, 2, 5, and 6-gallon), for greater versatility. Bigger 6-gallon models are perfect to leave in the garage as a backup for your generator while the smaller ones can easily be packed in case of emergencies. Of course, a gallon of fuel won’t get you that far if you are lost in the woods but it’s still better than nothing (you might be better with something a little bigger if you run a gas-guzzling V8, though).

Also worth mentioning is the cleverly-designed dust cap holder located behind the press button assembly, preventing you from misplacing and losing the cap after use (I lost mine several times before — I should have got a Press ‘N Pour a lot earlier).

If you are looking for a budget-friendly gas can, the Garage Boss GB351 Press ‘N Pour is a no-brainer. It’s the best budget gas can we could find, and despite its low cost, comes with several useful features and a design in compliance with EPA and CARB regulations.

Highlighted features

  • Also available in one, two, and six-gallon formats
  • Innovative and easy-to-use push-button operation
  • Provides complete fuel flow control to the operator
  • Translucent spout provides visual indicator
  • Extremely cheap
  • One-year “free from defect” warranty
  • Narrow spout opening reduces the flow rate
  • Takes quite some force to operate the push button

2. Eagle UI50FS Red Gasoline Safety Can

Eagle UI50FS Red Gasoline Safety Can

If you are looking for something a little sturdier, check out the Eagle’s UI50FS Type 1 gasoline can made from 24-gauge solid steel and constructed using deep drawing methods to avoid weak welds and seams, which could be prone to corrosion over time.

The steel body is also dipped into molten zinc to provide an extra layer of protection before the red high-visibility paint is applied. And even the finishing process is chosen while keeping safety and longevity in mind. Notably, the lead-free galvanized steel body is powder coated and oven-baked to ensure the thermosetting powder particles bond perfectly with each other and form a hard and permanent layer.

Eagle’s gas can also comes with a funnel making it easy to pour gasoline into smaller fuel fillers (though it’s a bit finicky to use at first), and the opening features an integrated wire mesh attachment preventing contaminants from getting in. Finally, the spring-loaded closing lid acts as a safety valve, releasing built-up internal pressure and preventing unforeseen accidents — it’s not as high-tech as other safety systems but it works.

All in all, the Eagle UI50FS is easily one of the best 5-gallon gas can out there, suitable for a wide range of applications. It can also frequent operation just as well as being stored away in a corner of the garage for months, and the galvanized steel construction and suite of safety features will ensure complete safety at all times.

Yes, it’s a bit old-school, but for a good reason; it works, will do so for years, and won’t break the bank — what’s not to like?

  • Construction: 24-gauge galvanized steel
  • Dimensions: 12.5” x 12.5” x 13.5”
  • Dry weight: 7 lbs.
  • Safety certifications and compliance: FM, UL, ULC, OSHA, NFPA Code 30, and CARB
  • Does not expand or shrink like plastic cans
  • Great value for money
  • Available in four colors and five different formats
  • Rugged and durable construction
  • Made in the USA
  • Ten-years limited warranty
  • The funnel takes some getting used to

3. Scepter 12 Gallon Marine Fuel Tank

Scepter 12 Gallon Marine Fuel Tank

The Scepter 08668 is a high-capacity fuel tank made from thick UV stabilized High-Density Polyethylene or HDPE plastic, specifically designed for marine applications. Interestingly, for this model, Scepter uses only one piece of molded HDPE for the entire body to achieve a seamless construction, reducing the risk of any potential weak spots. The material is also chemically treated to avoid the permeation of fuel vapor, helping it retain its original octane value for longer, which is especially handy for boats and outboards frequently docked for an extended duration.

Additionally, this gas tank is fitted with Scepter’s two-way ventilated cap, allowing outside air to enter the tank during operation while keeping the internal pressure stable at 5 PSI. Still, it’s important to note that some owners had issues with the ventilated cap; in some circumstances, it leaked and/or caused the can to swell. Not so much of a big deal but make sure to keep an eye on that.

As said before, this model is purpose-built for ships of all sizes, and as such, it can be secured to your boat and used as a secondary or emergency fuel tank. Whenever required, the tank’s stored fuel can be delivered using the fuel feeder port via a ¼” NPT attachment, and the built-in fuel level indicator also makes it especially easy to keep an eye on the amount of fuel left.

As a result, Scepter’s 12-gallon fuel tank is the go-to choice if you’re looking to increase your boat’s range. However, it might be a bit bulky for storage purposes, and honestly, we have better options for that below.

  • Construction: One-piece high-density polyethylene
  • Capacity: 12 gallons (45.42 liters)
  • Dimensions: 22.9” x 14.3” x 13.9”
  • Dry weight: 6.75 lbs.
  • Safety certifications and compliance: CARB, EPA, SAI, CSA, ABYC, JCI, and ICMI
  • One-piece construction
  • Built-in fuel level indicator
  • Two-way ventilation cap for safety
  • High capacity
  • Retains octane value for longer periods
  • One-year manufacturer limited warranty
  • The tank is susceptible to swelling due toisolated ventilation issues

4. Wavian USA JC0020RVS Authentic NATO Fuel Jerry Can

Wavian USA JC0020RVS Authentic NATO Fuel Jerry Can

Military technology has and will always be miles ahead of what is available to civilians like you and me. But what if I was to tell you that it’s possible to buy the exact same gas can used by NATO? Well, that’s exactly what Wavian USA is offering with its authentic NATO-spec jerry can! Pretty cool, right?

But what’s so interesting about it, you may ask? Well, even in seemingly simple tools like gas canisters, there is still a significant scope for improvement using Military-level advanced technology. For example, Wavian’s gas cans will take a lot longer to rust than others, thanks to the inner rustproof Rezol lining. Moreover, the body is made from high-grade, 0.9mm thick, cold-rolled steel and protected by a long-lasting epoxy-polyester powder coat — if that’s not next-level, I don’t know what is.

Moreover, Wavian’s gas can comes with an ergonomic bayonet-style nozzle designed with usability in mind. And thanks to the leak-proof closing mechanism, the spout will stay tightly sealed, irrespective of the can’s position. And even if you were to drive on extremely bumpy terrains, you can also use the built-in locking pin in the cap for complete peace of mind. It might seem a bit much, but keep in mind that if you were carrying a jerry can full of fuel while driving in a warzone, you’d probably want to be extra careful too, right?

The Wavian JC0020RVS 20-liter gas can will easily handle any job at hand. Admittedly, it costs slightly more than similar models, but you are getting an authentic NATO-spec jerry can, manufactured by the same military supplier here.

Hey, if you ask me, just the bragging rights are already worth more than the asking price…

  • Authentic NATO-spec jerry can
  • Construction: 0.9 mm cold-rolled steel – epoxy powder coating
  • Capacity: 5.3 gallons (20 liters)
  • Dimensions: 18.5” x 13.5” x 6.5”
  • Dry weight: 12 lbs.
  • Safety certifications and compliance: CARB, EPA, ASMT, NFPA, DOT
  • Also available in 5L and 10L formats
  • Internal rezol lining to prevent rust
  • Ergonomic three-handle design
  • Leak-proof bayonet spout with locking pin
  • Two-years manufacturer warranty
  • None — when it works, it works

5. RotoPaX RX-2G Gasoline Pack — Editor’s Pick

RotoPaX RX-2G Gasoline Pack

The RotoPaX RX2G is one of the few gas cans still manufactured using the rotational molding process. Keeping the government’s stringent safety regulations in mind, it is pretty challenging to get the process right, but the result well is worth the extra effort when you do. Rotational molding ensures powdered plastic material is evenly distributed throughout the mold, resulting in a high-quality gas can with no seams or weld lines.

However, the main talking point of the RotoPax system is the innovative mounting kit making it easy to securely fasten the gas can onto your truck or ATV, allowing for multiple mounting configuration and even to stack multiple cans on top of each other.

If you like to go on frequent off-roading adventures in your truck, SUV, or even ATV, the RotoPax RX2G gasoline pack is the perfect way to carry some extra fuel, just in case. Most off-road trails don’t have that many gas stations nearby, so you can put your mind at ease knowing you’ve got a few more gallons of fuel in reserve.

And let’s not forget that it will also look quite good on your truck — that’s not to neglect either!

  • Durable multi-layered plastic body
  • Best off-road and ATV gas can
  • Can be mounted to your motorcycle, truck, SUV, or ATV
  • Leak-proof spout
  • Mounting kit sold separately
  • Costs more than other models

6. Scepter USA 6792 Duramax 14 Gallon Flo-N-Go Fuel Caddy — Premium Pick

Scepter USA 6792 Duramax 14 Gallon Flo-N-Go Fuel Caddy

If you are looking for a truly professional gas can model, Scepter’s Duramax Flo-N-Go fuel caddy is what you need. The larger capacity (14-gallon) tank comes in the form of a trolley, complete with rugged 6” wheels at the base, so you can easily move it around and refuel several vehicles at the same time — it’s basically a regular gas station fuel pump, but portable.

The Duramax is molded from high-density polyethylene, which is incredibly tough, resistant to dents, and obviously rustproof. Meanwhile, the integrated hose provides a long enough range to deliver large fuel quantities across the dock to your boat or refill tractors, generators, lawnmower, snowmobile, or any other gas-powered machine.

Scepter’s Flo-N-Go fuel caddy provides the best fuel capacity and mobility while making no compromises on either side. You get the brand’s MaxFlo gravity pump to easily transfer gas from the caddy while allowing complete control at the handle.

If you need a professional-grade gas can that you can use day-in/day-out in the shop or on the farm, the Duramax Flo-N-Go fuel caddy is the model you need!

  • Patented fuel pump handle
  • Durable 6” wheels for easy mobility
  • Suitable for a wide range of applications
  • Ergonomic design handle
  • Extra-long 10’ hose for added convenience
  • On the expensive side

What to Consider When Buying A Gas Can

Safety features and certifications.

Your number one priority when buying a gas can should always be safety, even if you have to pay a few extra bucks to get a safer model. Fortunately, each gas can on our list has been handpicked after considering stringent safety measures.

The United States government takes such issues very seriously and lays out rigorous standards for critical equipment to pass before the general public can access it. One way to ensure your gas can is safe enough is to check for certifications and compliance from various government and non-government agencies like CARB, EPA, OSHA, NFPA, UL, ULC, and SAI. There are countless such agencies, and each has different rules and regulations, so the onus is on you to thoroughly research beforehand.

Construction material

Gas cans are generally made from one of two materials — plastic or metal. Plastic gas cans typically use polyethylene or other related materials, while metal ones are mostly steel. Since flammable and volatile fuels like gasoline emit vapors when stationary, plastic cans can swell up quite a bit if the trapped vapors have no place to go. Once these cans swell up and deform, they don’t return to their original form, even after the pressure is relieved. On the other side, this problem is quite rare in metal cans.

Holding capacity

Each gas can is rated to hold a specific quantity of gasoline in gallons or liters. You can choose the best gas can for your needs based on the amount of fuel you would usually need. Now, this value can defer based on the application; for example, gas-guzzling machinery like boats or trucks consumes more fuel while other machines like a lawnmower can make do with only a few gallons. Even so, the list includes gas cans with capacities ranging from 2 to 14 gallons, so you shouldn’t have trouble finding the right fit.

Type 1 or Type 2

Safety cans or gas cans are divided into two types based on the general layout for all practical purposes. The classification is relatively straightforward; Type 1 gas cans come with one opening for pouring and refilling, and Type 2 gas cans feature separate openings for both activities. Suppose your sole purpose for buying a gas can is to refuel your vehicle in case of emergencies. In that case, the Type 1 models are more than good enough, as Type 2 cans are suitable for more complex applications like feeding fuel directly to a boat engine.

Frequently Asked Questions (FAQs)

What are the precautions i need to take while storing gas cans.

Gasoline is a volatile liquid that emits vapors, and if these vapors can’t escape the can, the consequences can be disastrous. It is rare for gas cans to explode because of this phenomenon, but there is a good chance the higher internal pressure will cause the fuel to spill out onto your body once you open the cap. Thus, we recommend storing the gas can in the shade to avoid accelerated vaporization to prevent such occurrences. Moreover, it is good to open the cap for a few seconds every day to avoid excessive pressure from building up.

Does storing gas affect its octane value?

Yes, storing gasoline in safety cans for longer durations can cause a significant decline in the fuel’s octane value. Several factors contribute to octane depletion, like surface permeation and natural degradation over time.

Now, natural degradation may not be in your control, but you can invest in low-permeation plastic or metal gas cans to prevent significant drops in octane value.

Gas cans can come in handy in emergencies or unforeseen situations, and we hope this article has helped you select the best model for your needs and budget.

After much deliberation, we think the Wavian JC0020RVS Fuel Can to be the best all-around gas can. After all, it’s an authentic NATO-spec jerry can made from military-grade rustproof steel — you simply can’t go wrong with this one!

Of course, the other models on the list are also pretty good, but they are better suited to specific applications. For example, off-roading and ATV enthusiasts should go for the RotoPaX RX-2G gasoline pack , thanks to the easy and versatile mounting mechanism. Meanwhile, Scepter ’s gas cans are perfect for boating or other marine applications.

Overland Fuel Storage and Best Jerry Cans

It’s not uncommon to travel hundreds of miles of unpaved roads while overlanding. In fact, most expect this to be the norm.

It would obviously be an issue if you were to run out of fuel while traveling these backroads. This is why most overlanders have extra overland fuel storage.

Types of Storage

Depending on your vehicle, there are generally two forms of storage for fuel. If your vehicle is suitable for a long-range tank, this is what I recommend and what I use on my vehicle.

The other option is a jerry can or gas can type setup.

Both options have their pros and cons.

The long-range tank can hold more and is always out of sunlight. However, it costs considerably more and is not suitable for every vehicle.

The jerry can is a tried and tested method, initially used for militaries worldwide and still in use today. But, it may not hold as much as you like, and you may struggle to find a space to store it.

Long Range Tanks

Aftermarket companies manufacture long-range fuel tanks to answer the needs of adventurous motorists as well as many companies.

Companies like  Long Range America  produce these tanks for the most popular vehicles. However, unfortunately, they’re not available for all vehicles.

If you’re fortunate enough to find your vehicle on the list of suitable models, I highly recommend going this route.

The extra fuel tank sits in some unused space on the underbody of your vehicle. It is equipped with a pump that will feed the fuel into your main tank with the push of a button.

The major benefit of this setup is how much extra fuel it can hold, which is much more than the jerry can set up.

If, for some reason, you can’t or don’t want to use a long-range fuel tank, then using jerry cans for overland fuel storage is the next best method.

The benefit of using jerry cans is that you can use the extra space underneath for water storage .

Also, there’s no need to worry about suitability like there is with long-range tanks, especially if you spend a lot of time on new trails, then it’s useful to have an off-road gas can.

Best Off-Road Gas Cans

Midwest 5 gallon metal jerry gas can.

Midwest Can Company has been making fuel storage containers for over 70 years. With that in mind, you can take their products at face value. They know what they are doing.

The Midwest 5 Gallon Metal Jerry Can is made to last. It can handle Nevada heat and Alaska cold with ease.

The can has excellent welds and great balance. It has a comfortable handle and it’s covered with very nice auto-grade gloss paint.

This jerry can comes with a pouring spout that has an in-built air bleed tube for smooth pouring; and a protective cap for when the can is not in use.

The only downfall with this can is its cap. It’s a little bit cheaply made, but you can find a replacement, like the Fuel Spout and Vent Kit from EZ-POUR.

Scepter Military 5.3 Gallon Jerry Can

Scepter has been producing durable containers for off-roaders, overlanders, and marine enthusiasts for some time now.

Their 5.3 gallon Jerry Can comes with the same durability as all of their products.

The can is constructed from durable high-density polyethylene and is rust-proof and non-corrosive.

The spout comes with a venting tube and the can’s lightweight design makes it perfect for storing in any vehicle, even ATVs.

Wavian Nato Steel

Wavian has supplied Nato countries for over 75 years, and their fuel cans still stand up to the test today.

Manufactured with 0.9mm cold rolled steel walls and Rezol rust-proof lining, these cans are built to last.

Another bonus is that it comes with a spout and an internal breather pipe to make pouring effortless and splashproof.

This makes a solid off-road gas can due to its sturdiness, easy pour, and included spout.

How to Store Fuel

Color -Make sure to choose the right color for your fuel containers to prevent any confusion. Red-gasoline, Yellow-diesel

Approved containers -Only use approved containers like the ones mentioned above. Other cheap containers are not suitable for holding fuel and will break down.

Store outside -While the containers mentioned above are great containers and don’t leak or let off fumes; we still strongly recommend storing them outside the vehicle. Either attach them to the roof rack or spare wheel carrier.

Don’t overfill -When fuel releases vapors, it causes the fuel can to expand; for this reason, it’s important not to overfill the can. Most fuel cans have a line marked for the fill limit.

Avoid direct sunlight -Try to park your vehicle out of direct sunlight when you are storing fuel on top. The heat from the sun can build up the pressure in the can. Try to park under the shade of a tree to prevent this.

Release the pressure -At least once a day be sure to release the pressure build up in the can, this is especially important in warm weather.

Overland fuel storage systems allow you to explore more off the beaten path or navigate strange foreign lands where sourcing fuel may not be so easy.

Even if you never have a need for fuel storage, it’s always nice to have that peace of mind should something ever happen.

We love the long-range tank, but we still traveled thousands of miles with jerry cans as our fuel storage, and they worked a treat.

Whatever method you choose, ensure you get a high-quality approved can and practice safe storage, and you can rest easy.

7 Best Off-Road Gas Cans for Emergencies

7 Best Off-Road Gas Cans for Emergencies

Running out of gas is everyone’s worst nightmare when they are on the road, but running out of gas when you are not on the road is even worse! For those of you who enjoy off-roading , especially in areas with limited to no cell service, having an extra can of gas can be extremely important —or even life-saving. When choosing a gas can that you would like to keep in your car, there are many factors you will need to consider. Some of these factors are: size, durability, material, and functionality. The last thing you want is to purchase a can with low durability or one that is not very easy to use. Picking out the right can for you can be confusing, so we are going to break down our top picks. There are many different types of fuel cans and it is important to understand when to use plastic gas cans or metal gas cans for storing fuel.

It is also important to remember that gas is flammable and emits harmful gas fumes. Plastic gas cans are a more affordable option to store gasoline, however, gasoline can leach into the plastic cans and they are also susceptible to melting and temperature changes. Metal gas cans on the other hand are better for long term fuel storage, but they are less portable fuel containers, and they are generally more expensive. Picking out the right can for you can be confusing, so we are going to break down our top picks for the best gas cans.

Wavian Gas Can

wavian gas can

The Wavian Gas Can is debatably one of the best gas cans out there. It is made from cold rolled steel and is lined to help protect against rusting. It has a 5.28 gallon capacity and is 19 inches tall, 13.5 inches long, and 6.5 inches wide. It is DOT and OSHA compliant and also includes the spout. This gas can comes in a variety of colors and also has various accessories, such as gas can holders as well. This is a very durable option and is our top choice, but it is unfortunately restricted in California.

RotopaX Gas Can

rotopax 2 gallon gas can

The RotopaX gas can is a unique looking can that can even be mounted to the back of your Jeep. Each can however only holds 2 gallons, which can make this option a little pricey if you want to carry more than one can. But, it is good for emergency uses and also comes with the spout. If you would like to mount this can on your vehicle, you can purchase a mounting kit separately. It is leak proof and EPA and CARB compliant. This can is made with a plastic barrier that is fairly durable. One major negative with this gas can is that you must vent the fuel once a day. It is 17 ¾ inches tall, 13 ¼ inches long, and 3 inches wide.

Anvil Off-Road Jerry Can

anvil off-road jerry can gas can

The Anvil Off-Road Jerry Can is a 5.3 gallon steel can with safety cap and spout. It is slightly cheaper than the Wavian gas can, but also only comes in a red, green, blue, or yellow color. It is available in all 50 states and is EPA and CARB certified and OSHA compliant. This is also built to DOT, NFPA, and ASTM standards. This gas can is also mountable, but the mounting equipment is sold separately. The safety cap has a locking pin which helps prevent leaks and spills and it also has an internal vent.

Midwest Can Metal Jerry Can

travel gas container

Midwest Can’s Metal Jerry Can is a great affordable option for a metal fuel cans. It is 5 gallons and is 18 ¼ inches tall, 13.5 inches long, and 6.5 inches wide. This can has a quick flow spout and is spill proof as well. It is DOT, EPA, and CARB certified. This gas can, however, only comes in the color red.

Flame Shield Metal Gas Can

flame shield gas can

Flame Shield’s steel gas can is another great metal option and is less expensive than the Wavian gas can. This can has a 5 gallon capacity and is 18 ¼ inches tall, 13.5 inches long, and 6.5 inches wide. The only color this gas can comes in is classic red and it includes the spout and cap. It is EPA and CARB standard as well.

Midwest HDPE Gas Can

travel gas container

Midwest HDPE gas can is a good inexpensive option for plastic gas cans. This can is only 2 gallons and is 9 ¾ inches tall, 9 ¼ inches long, and 7 ¾ inches wide. It is made of HDPE, not metal, and has a self venting function. It meets the EPA and CARB standards and also includes the cap and spout. If you are looking for a smaller, lightweight option, this may be a good fit. However, this will not be as durable as some of the metal options.

SureCan Gas Can

surecan gas can

SureCan’s HDPE gas can is another great option for a non- metal can. It is more expensive than Flame Shield’s metal gas cans, but it is a 5 gallon, which is twice the capacity as theirs. This can is 15 ⅝ inches tall, 15 9/32 inches long, and 10 15/64 inches wide. It is self venting and only comes in a red color. The spout is included and it is EPA, CARB, and DOT certified. Although this is a good non-metal option, it is not available internationally or in California.

We hope this list was useful in helping you find the best gas cans, especially for those who are off-roading or overlanding, and won't be near a gas station for a longer period of time. Always remember to use an approved gas can when filling your fuel tank and ensure that all safety measures are in place. Just as important as having a reliable and durable gas can, is having the proper recovery gear and off-road accessories, so make sure to check out the Rhino USA website for the toughest equipment available!

How long is gas good for in a gas can?

The general rule is that pure gas stored in a metal or plastic container can last 3-6 months before it begins to degrade and lose its combustibility. Ethanol gas blends should not be stored for more than 2-3 months before they begin to oxidize and evaporate.

How to fill up a gas can

The best way to fill up a gas can is by first placing it on the ground, and touching the metal of the nozzle to your vehicle to remove any static electricity that might be present. Before pumping the gas into the gas can, ensure that the gas nozzle is in contact with the rim of your can and begin filling slowly. Only fill your gas can up to 95% to ensure there is room for the fuel to expand under changing temperatures.

The Best Overland Fuel Storage for 2023

For those long range overland excursions, be sure to carry enough fuel to get you home.

Published on June 6, 2021 - ↺ Last updated February 7, 2023

Our Top Fuel Storage Picks

When it comes to overlanding, one of the most important things to consider is having enough fuel for the journey. Gas cans are a great way to ensure you have enough fuel, but with so many options on the market, it can be difficult to choose the best one for your needs. Here are some of the most important considerations to keep in mind when selecting a gas can for overlanding.

How We Pick the Best Gas Jerry Cans for Overlanding

The first thing to consider is how much fuel you need to carry with you. A small 5-gallon can might be fine for shorter trips, but if you’re planning a long journey, you might want to opt for a larger capacity can. Keep in mind that while a larger can might give you more fuel, it will also take up more space in your vehicle and be heavier to carry.

Gas cans are typically made of plastic or metal. Plastic cans are lightweight and less expensive, but they can be brittle and prone to cracking in extreme temperatures. Metal cans are sturdier and better able to withstand harsh conditions, but they’re also heavier and more expensive. When choosing a gas can, consider the conditions you’ll be facing on your trip and choose a material that will suit your needs.

Gas cans come with a variety of spout types, and the right one for you will depend on your specific needs. Some cans have a screw-on spout that you have to remove and replace each time you need to pour gas. Others have a flip-top spout that opens and closes with a simple flip of a lever. Some spouts are designed to prevent spills, while others are designed to pour quickly and easily. Consider the kind of spout you’ll need based on how you plan to use your gas can.

Safety features

Safety is always a top concern when working with gasoline, so it’s important to choose a gas can that has features in place to minimize the risk of fire or spills. Some cans have flame arrestors that prevent sparks from igniting the fuel, while others have no-spill spouts that reduce the risk of spills. When choosing a gas can, consider the safety features that are important to you and choose one that will help you stay safe on the road.

Gas cans can range from a few dollars to several hundred dollars, depending on their size, material, and features. While it’s tempting to choose the least expensive option, keep in mind that the cheapest gas can might not be the best option for your needs. Consider the value you’re getting for the price and choose a can that offers the features and quality you need at a price you can afford.

Ease of Use

When you’re on the road, you don’t want to spend a lot of time fussing with your gas can. Choose a can that’s easy to use and will make it simple to get the fuel you need when you need it. Look for cans that are easy to pour, have simple spouts, and won’t spill or leak.

Overlanding can be tough on gear, so you want a gas can that will hold up to the rigors of the road. Choose a can that’s made of high-quality materials and is built to last. Consider the conditions you’ll be facing on your trip and choose a can that will stand up to the elements and the wear and tear of travel.

In conclusion, selecting the best gas can for overlanding requires careful consideration of your specific needs and requirements. Consider the capacity you need, the material and spout type, the safety features, the price, ease of use,  and the durability of the gas can. Taking these factors into account will help you choose a gas can that will serve you well on your overlanding adventures.

It’s also important to keep in mind the regulations regarding gas cans. Some states have regulations that prohibit the use of plastic gas cans or limit their size. Before you purchase a gas can, be sure to check the regulations in your area to make sure the can you choose is compliant.

When using a gas can, always be sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions and take the necessary precautions to prevent fires or spills. Store your gas can securely in your vehicle, away from any sparks or flames, and never transport gasoline in the passenger compartment of your vehicle.

In addition to choosing the right gas can, it’s also important to have a plan for how you’ll handle fuel during your overlanding trip. Make sure you have a map of the area and know where you can find fuel along the way. It’s also a good idea to carry extra fuel in your vehicle in case you run into any unexpected detours or delays.

Overlanding can be a great adventure, but it requires careful planning and preparation. Having the right gas can will help ensure you have the fuel you need to make the most of your trip. Choose a gas can that meets your needs and remember to take the necessary precautions to stay safe on the road.

In conclusion, selecting the right gas can for overlanding is an important decision that should not be taken lightly. Consider your needs and the conditions you’ll be facing on your trip, and choose a gas can that will keep you fueled and safe throughout your journey. With the right gas can and a solid plan in place, you’ll be well on your way to a successful overlanding adventure.

Something that every no-spill garbage gas can we’ve ever tested has consistently failed to pull off.

This Wavian USA jerry might appear to be pricey (well, it is); however, it’s well-made and superior to “cheap” jerry cans. It’s well-built, seal well, and are comparable to the original German design from WWII. The Wavian can is without a doubt the one of the best jerry can for Overlanding. You can securely carry this container in your off-road as long as it is firmly anchored to avoid making noise.

Some customers, however, detest the CARB compliance spout and its pressure activation; nonetheless, the optional faucet help solves this issue. To be clear, we didn’t find any problem with the can, and it does what it was intended for—store and transport a large amount of gasoline, be tough and durable, and not be convenient and lightweight. Absolutely the best and easiest container to deal with when adding fuel while on your off-road adventures.

Many people associate jerry cans with a large red plastic contraption. This zhicheng Portable Fuel Tank, on the other hand, does not fall under this category. It is grey in color and made of premium stainless steel. The zhicheng earns a spot in our review for its exceptional value, offering a portable fuel tank size surprisingly low price. It’s rather hefty in comparison to most other jerry cans. When empty, it weighs 7kg. And fill it with five gallons of petrol or diesel, and it will suddenly consider far more. This Automobile portable oil drum has one of the largest storage sizes (20 liters) and one of the lowest prices. Even though it has a simple design, it’s not the simplest to use, has a poor design, and is relatively thin.

The Zhicheng has extra thick, high-quality iron construction, a tiny footprint cabinet, a 20-liter capacity (5.28-gallons), a grey gloss finish, and anti-corrosive coating on the interior and outside, as well as a safety spout and lock. It has exceptional durability, is made of high-quality materials, and makes carrying an additional amount of gasoline relatively quick and straightforward.

Frequently Asked Questions About Fuel Storage

How much fuel should you carry when overlanding.

At a minimum try and carry twice the necessary fuel needed for a given stretch between gas stations. This estimate takes into account potential 0 fuel events such as a fuel leak.

For example, if the greatest distance between gas stations is 50 miles, and your rig runs at 10 MPG on the trail, then you would want to carry 5 gallons of fuel.

Where should I store extra fuel for overlanding?

We recommend storing your fuel outside of the cabin of your vehicle. We utilize a spare tire fuel mount, which keeps us safe if there is a fuel leak or spill from the fuel can.
