What to Look For When Buying a TSA-Approved Lock

Luggage locks vary quite a bit in price, but you won’t find many over $20. It depends on the level of security you’re looking for: Steel shackle locks can run a bit more expensive, as do keyless options that require a card to unlock. Beware of super-inexpensive options—paying a few dollars more on your luggage lock can make all the difference.

Most TSA-approved locks are made of steel, an ultra-durable material. Steer clear of locks made entirely of rubber or plastic and locks with cables that are anything but steel.

There are a few common styles of TSA-approved locks: combination locks, cable locks, and keyless locks. Consider your personal preferences when choosing: Do you constantly lose your keys? Stay away from locks that require one to open. Need a bit of flexibility to lock up a bag with small zipper holds? Look for a super-strong cable lock with a thinner cable. Anxious about someone cracking your combination code? Opt for a card-access lock. 

Every TSA-approved lock will have a red diamond logo, also known as a Travel Sentry logo. This means it’s compatible with the universal keys that TSA agents have to unlock these approved locks.

Not necessarily. Most cable locks are made with durable steel cables—you’d need a heavy-duty wire cutter to break through. If that still worries you, choose a steel shackled lock instead; just know that they are less flexible in terms of what you can affix them to (larger shackles don’t often work well with smaller zipper pulls).

As a travel and food writer, I spend a great deal of time traveling independently . This can be very exciting, as it gives me freedom to make my own schedule and explore fascinating destinations. But as a woman, traveling solo can also sometimes feel a little unsafe, especially in hotels and Airbnbs. The reality is that an intruder can invade your space regardless of the star rating of your accommodations. In our tests, the Doorricade door bar offered the strongest security of all the models tested, but its application was noticeably limited. Our original test door did not have a wide enough gap between the edge of the door and the door frame to fit the mounting hardware. (We tested it on a different door, rather than make it work by removing the door and routering the door frame.) Also, even though the brackets swing out of the way when not in use, the look of the installed hardware is completely utilitarian and not attractive enough for a residential entryway.

Once installed, the aluminum bar was incredibly stout and secure. There was no movement when we attempted to open the door. The bar itself was easy to secure in place, remove, and store out of the way when not in use. It would make an excellent option for a garage or workshop walk-through door that may otherwise be susceptible to intrusion.

The alarm is loud enough to be heard up to 1,000 feet away. The door wedge needs a 9-volt battery to operate, and it provides a battery status update with a low-battery indicator.

The wedge has a nonskid pad that also prevents entry and will work on most floorings, including carpet. This door wedge can be taken along when traveling for alarmed security away from home.

The Sabre door stop alarm’s combined protection method proved highly effective in our test. After turning it on and placing it as close to the door as possible, we attempted to open the door. The alarm was triggered immediately, even before the door motion stopped, and it was piercingly, painfully loud. The wedge stopped the door from opening almost immediately, with less than 2 inches of movement.

It is important to note that this wedge will be most effective on doors with less than 1-inch of clearance above the floor. Doors with higher clearance may not engage the pressure plate to trigger the alarm and may not be stopped as easily by the 1.5-inch-tall wedge.

The aluminum brace comes with 2-inch-long screws for drilling into floors and plastic anchors for mounting on ceramic tiles, marble, or concrete floors. Simply drill it to the floor and slide the locking mechanism in place.

For testing, we installed the Nightlock on a laminate floor with a wood subfloor in less than 5 minutes. Operation was simple and extremely secure. The door did not budge when the brace was installed, and it slid in and out of place effortlessly. This could be an outstanding security addition for French or double doors since it can be aligned to hold both doors at once, even though it is less than 10 inches long.

Besides your Airbnb host, who else has access to your temporary living space? Cleaners? Contractors? Neighbors? Maintenance people? HOA staff? Maybe even previous gusts? Do you know how often your Airbnb host changes the passcode for the door?

My former boss got robbed at an Airbnb in Jamaica. In the middle of the night, two guys came into their rental and robbed them while they were sleeping. Not wanting to risk an armed confrontation, my boss pretended to be asleep during the robbery. In addition to his phone and laptop, the thieves also took his passport and wallet.

The robbery only lasted a few mins, but that’s all it took to turn his weak-long vacation turned into a frustrating exercise in replacing travel documents and credit cards. The Jamaican police eventually caught the thieves. It turns out that they were the two boyfriends of the cleaning ladies. They owed money to a local drug dealer and got desperate enough to rob the Airbnb.

The second time, I wasn’t as lucky. The hotel staff at a Holiday Inn Express in New York City gave me a keycard to someone else’s room… and they were still inside! There was a woman in the bathroom wearing nothing but a towel. I quickly ran out of the room and into the stairwell. I didn’t want to risk waiting for the elevator and getting into a fight with an angry husband or boyfriend. Unfortunately my room was on the 21st floor. I walked down a few flights carrying my suitcase and then caught the elevator back down to the lobby. So embarrassing!

You then close the door with the plate in between the door and door frame and attach the plastic clip. Once secured into place, the plastic clip prevents an inward opening door from opening.

• Pros : Easy Install: No tools are required for installation; Compatibility: You can use this model in most hotels, Airbnbs, schools, rentals, etc.; Portable: This model is lightweight, small, and easily fits into a pocket.
• Cons : Durability: The plastic can become cracked, especially after repeated forced entry attempts; Deadbolt Size Restrictions: This model works with average door types, but not larger deadbolts or door shapes.
• Who Should Buy This? Anyone on a budget who wants to use a portable door lock to secure an inward opening door with a deadbolt.

These locks work great, but they have a couple potential drawbacks that you need to consider before buying.

If someone tries to forcefully open a door while the butterfly clip is attached, then it can severely dent the door. That’s probably not a concern for a hotel room, but if you plan on using this lock on a home bedroom door, then you might want to try a different model.

Another potential issue is compatibility. To secure a room, the gap between the door and the door frame must be greater than 2mm (if your door does not have a door gap, it may not be suitable for you).

• Pros:  Durable: Made from high-grade metal materials; Protective Padding: Intergraded pads help prevent damage to door or door frame.
• Cons : Expensive: At $99, this lock is 10x more expensive than the average price of the other portable travel locks on this list.
• Who Should Buy This? If you have serious security concerns, this this is the lock for you. It’s as strong as a permanent door lock.

The(Amazon link) Calslock Portable Door Lock ($30 via Amazon) has a unique style. At first glance, it looks like a miniature brass chainsaw (it even has a serrated edge). It may look cute, but the Calslock is a sturdy portable door lock that’s also easy to use.

To secure a door using the Calslock, simply hook the lock into the deadbolt’s door plate and squeeze and pull back the slide bar when the door is open. Once the door is closed, squeeze the slide bar and push it against the door, then release.

One personal trick I use to make sure I always travel with one or two of these devices is to keep my travel door locks with my toiletry bag, as I always pack that.

The device should also be easy to install. If it is easy to use it becomes a habit to install it every time you close and lock the door, and that’s what you want for your or your loved one’s peace of mind.

Any portable lock you select to travel with should meet your expectations for strength and effectiveness. And that might change as you apply your door lock to different doors. One design of a portable door lock may be more or less effective depending on the door and/or door frame you are using it on. Be prepared and have a couple of security on hand.
