Review: Rihanna on Tour, Part Preacher, Part Dominatrix, All Human

rihanna tour 2016

By Jon Caramanica

  • March 28, 2016

There wasn’t much to look at in terms of set design during Rihanna’s Sunday-night concert at Barclays Center in Brooklyn. Oversized plastic cocoons throbbed with pulsing air on either side of the stage. About two-thirds into the show, a huge shower curtain dropped from the ceiling; for a while, it displayed multicolored psychedelic swirls, and shortly after, foam came tumbling down it from the top, as if Rihanna had let the world’s largest washing machine overflow.

These didn’t feel like strategic choices so much as a result of needing literally to fill space — vertical, horizontal, intellectual, psychological.

But there was one exceedingly potent and poetic visual gambit early in the night, one that required just as little thought but was endlessly rich. Rihanna began the concert on a platform at the opposite end of the arena from the stage. After one song there, she boarded a clear floating catwalk and soared above the crowd, slithering through erotic numbers like “Woo” and “Sex With Me” while striking one hard pose after the next. She was moving laterally, and also undulating, and also pausing for effect. Songs were playing, she might even have been singing them, but in those minutes, all that mattered was her mastery of space.

She could have done the whole show like this, truly — staring down upon her faithful, bent at various angles, part tent preacher and part dominatrix. Rihanna is exceptional at being famous , and she needs very little in the way of help to fascinate a room.

At this show, though — the first of two sellouts at Barclays Center on her world tour celebrating “Anti” (Roc Nation) , her eighth album, which was released in January — she aimed for more, which she doesn’t always do. The concert was arranged thematically, split into sections that showcased different parts of her catalog — bombastic, anthemic, somewhat Caribbean, very Caribbean — if not of her personality. About two dozen songs were compressed into around 90 minutes, a warp-speed recent-career overview that played something like a workout video: tightly controlled with mild variations designed only to obscure the fact that, really, there are no variations.

That was echoed in the wardrobe, which utilized a restrained, mature palette — beige, ivory, taupe, olive — on garments designed for druids, a look that channeled 2013-era Kanye West and suggested a concert at the hottest club on Tatooine.

Neutrality is not anonymity, though. Rihanna, the 28-year-old pop star, was the most present she’s ever been onstage, and maybe the most confident. (Although in the past she has managed to pull off a supremely confident disengagement. )

She wasn’t particularly animated by the particulars of performing — her dancing was still casual, her lip-syncing not always spot on. But she appeared to be finding joy in singing — when she was doing it, which was only some of the time — a part of pop fame that has not always been her strength. Often, performers will front load their sets with songs that demand the most vocally, but Rihanna waited until the concert’s final leg to push herself: an ecstatic “Diamonds,” a bare-bones “FourFiveSeconds,” a melodramatic “Love on the Brain.” As people began to stream out of their seats to head home, Rihanna aimed to pull them back with her humanity.

This represented, in so much as is possible, Rihanna with her guard down. The rollout of “Anti” was scattershot and messy , and the album lacks a center. But it also includes some of Rihanna’s most thoughtful and invested singing ever. She is doing something extremely rare in pop: trying harder the more famous she’s become.

She surrounded herself with worthy allies here: a gaggle of outstanding dancers, including voguers and bone breakers, and a crack band, initially submerged on four square platforms arranged evenly onstage and eventually raised to sea level. The drums were tough and synthetic, the keyboards tingling. The band alternated between faithfulness to the source material and disruption, excelling on a space-funk version of “Birthday Cake” that was colder and dreamier than the original.

It also delivered an expertly rendered but unfortunate run of dance music, a world Rihanna occasionally visits with a big smile and a pinched nose: a nitrous-injected version of Drake’s “Take Care,” followed by “We Found Love” — on which her vocals were unsteady enough that they were clearly live, something that humanized the song’s assault — followed by “Where Have You Been.”

This, the most energized portion of the night’s show, was also the most disjointed. Each person onstage was operating in his or her independent universe; from a distance, it all suggested an Off Broadway play about an arena show, where each person surrounding the star harbors a provocative inner life but is trapped in an endless performance. In the middle of it all, Rihanna moved a little, but not much — everyone else’s physical scramble for attention only made her reluctance more entrancing.

Rihanna plays Barclays Center in Brooklyn on Wednesday and the Prudential Center in Newark on Saturday.

[1] "Reviewing the Los Angeles concert, Latifah Muhammad from  VIBE  described the tour as a "randomly epic road trip." [2]

Ed Power from  The Telegraph  gave Dublin concert four stars, writing that the tour "didn't waste time on embellishments and instead delivered full-strength shots of sass and escapism." [3]  The London concert also received four stars from  The Guardian , where Michael Cragg praised the singer's "unshakeable Rihanna-ness; that perfect pop voice, the undeniable presence, that couldn't-give-a-shit attitude." [4]

rihanna tour 2016

On Monday, Barbadian megastar musician Rihanna announced her upcoming concert series, the ANTI World Tour , which kicks off in February. For shows in the United States, Rihanna will perform alongside American rapper Travis Scott, while Canadian powerhouse singer The Weeknd and Detroit, Michigan's Big Sean will join her onstage for shows in Europe. Concert ticket sales begin on Dec. 3, and purchasing is available via TicketMaster .

Facing the release of her eighth studio album, and the artist's first full-length LP since 2012, Rihanna has said she is more confident than ever before. "I used to feel unsafe right in the moment of an accomplishment — I felt the ground fall from under my feet because this could be the end," Rihanna said in an Oct. 12 interview with the  New York Times Magazine . "And even now, while everyone is celebrating, I'm on to the next thing. I don't want to get lost in this big cushion of success.''

Here's the album art for ANTI , which the musician announced via Instagram :

According to the artist's website, the first of many performances begins on Feb. 26, 2016 in San Diego, California. Here's an exhaustive list of tour dates, a schedule that will put Rihanna before audiences in numerous cities around the world. On June 11, 2016, the musician will hop the pond to begin her European tour, a series that starts with a concert in Amsterdam.

Rihanna's forthcoming LP, ANTI , is reportedly scheduled for release on Dec. 4, however the artist has not confirmed the date. The  rumor mill  has been churning and it's possible the musician will sneak release her album via Tidal on Black Friday. Though an official track list has yet to be announced, Rolling Stone  reported that the artist has released three singles in the past year alone: "FourFiveSeconds," "American Oxygen" and the chart topping cut, "Bitch Better Have My Money."

While fans wait for more news on possible presale dates, here's Rihanna's colorful visual accompaniment to one of her most recent, and best-loved, singles.

Rihanna Builds Anticipation for Her 'ANTI' Album with a Dramatic New Video

RiRi goes full on Exorcist here.

Rihanna

Update, 11/29:  While we still don't know when her 8th studio album,  ANTI , is going to drop,  Rihanna has made waiting slightly easier by giving us a small glimpse into the next era of her career—which seems to be way less "Diamonds" and a lot more "Disturbia."

The singer teased her upcoming LP by posting a dramatic new video on  Twitter —with a rather ominous caption:

There's more than meets the eye. The next #ANTIdiaRy room is now open: https://t.co/uJ0CLlhoaS pic.twitter.com/I8AmmtTr9K November 28, 2015

So what does  The Exorcism of Bad Gal RiRi  have to do with her new music? The world may never know. (No, seriously, if we don't get a release date soon, we might just give up.)

Original post, 11/23:  Every other commercial during Sunday evening's  American Music Awards  was whispery little girls's voices promoting Rihanna's forthcoming album or Rihanna following creepy small children down a dark hallway, so you know she had to have had something big up her fur-trimmed sleeve. This is it—part of it, at least.

According to an announcement posted on her Instagram, the  Grand Poobah of pot  will go on tour from February 26 in San Diego to August 12 in Zurich, with Travis Scott and the Weeknd opening for her in the U.S. and Big Sean joining her in the U.K.

But what about the nervous-making kids? Has anyone actually taken the time to look for the keys in her interactive mobile-game thingy? WHEN DOES THE ALBUM DROP?!  You'll know when it's time . Sorry.

Rihanna’s Anti Tour: Subdued, but Still Ready to Party

rihanna tour 2016

“My band is ugly as shit,” Rihanna mused during a break between songs at Sunday night’s Anti World Tour stop at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center. “They know that, though. Luckily they can play some good-ass instruments.”

Rihanna is one of very few people on this planet who could call you ugly and it would somehow come off like a great compliment. Consider how cool you’d have to be for Rihanna to feel comfortable casually teasing you in front of thousands of people: that she is acknowledging you at all is paramount to anything else.

Rihanna’s “don’t give a fuck” persona has been written about extensively in recent years, ever since her somewhat darker 2012 album, Unapologetic , which was followed by a few years during which she was most visible to the public on her Instagram account, where her life seemed an impossibly chill collection of parties and galavanting with friends and vacations. She took quite some time (by her own standards) to release her follow-up, Anti , which represented a pretty significant departure from her previous collections. As we wrote when it came out in January, Anti is a “Sunday-afternoon album,” as opposed to an out-on-a-Friday-night or treadmill album. It’s soulful and hazy and, while there are definitely standouts, there are not the obvious “bangers” that her previous seven albums featured (save for straight-up smash first single “Work,” which has spent five weeks at the top of the Billboard singles chart). It was as though Rihanna was saying, with Anti , “I’ve already conquered the singles game; I want to put out a piece of cohesive art now,” and then went ahead and put out the Rihanna version of that, which has its slightly middling patches, but ultimately sounds—in its rawness and grit—like an Exactly the Album This Artist Wanted to Make album.

Image may contain Human Person Stage Dance Pose Leisure Activities and Crowd

So it’s fitting that the corresponding tour for this “new era”—as she referred to it during the show—is one that feels minimalist and stripped down: less Pop Star, and more Mature Artist (Mature Artist Who Still Has a Penchant for Partying, that is). There was little in the way of set design or visual elements. The 28-year-old emerged from a white structure in the center of the arena at the beginning of the night (opening with the ballad “Stay,” off of Unapologetic , setting the tone for the staid-by-Rihanna-standards evening). She wore an oversize white coat—hood on—one of several cloaked, draped outfits she cycled through over the course of the night, all of which looked egregiously comfortable, and which gave her the appearance of being (the most fashionable version of) A Woman on Her Way to a Party in the Middle of a Blizzard.

She eventually made her way across a walkway—while performing “Pose,” an Anti bonus track, and one of the more rollicking songs on the record—vamping and preening. Once she reached the end of the walkway, and decamped for the stage, she remained there for the rest of the night. The aesthetic—the monochromatic leisure-wear clothing, and the sparse stage (two tarps were visible for the entire night, deflated on either side)—definitely evoked Kanye West’s Yeezy Season collections. For the most part, she sprinted through her prior hits, not giving the (spirited) audience much time to live with any of them. During a section in the middle, she performed a sequence of buoyant older jams (“Live Your Life,” “Run This Town,” “All of the Lights,” “Umbrella”) and she joyously danced, skipped, and spun around the stage, singing some, but seeming more like the Platonic Ideal of how one should move their body and bliss out to a Rihanna song—which, of course, makes sense, since she is Rihanna. Watching her be Rihanna is a delight like watching a supermodel strut or an athlete dunk—it’s regarding a triumph.

If Rihanna seemed to rush through some of her songs (the entire set was just under 90 minutes), she definitely, unsurprisingly, luxuriated most in the new Anti songs. Many of them—“Needed Me,” “Consideration”—came alive more in the live setting than they do on the album, perhaps due to Rihanna’s evident passion in selling them. “Work” was a bit of a missed opportunity, sandwiched into the middle of one of the sections and absent the Drake verse, but I would be lying if I said the woman in front of me did not turn around bemused as I wailed and flailed along to it, so it’s hard to say the rendition wasn’t wholly transformative. Her decision to close the show with Anti standout— but mid-tempo—“Kiss It Better” seemed indicative of her intentions for the night.

The Bear Season 3 Won’t Serve Up a Carmy and Sydney Romance

As much as we all would love to spend a weekend partying with Rihanna in a remote beach house somewhere, she is, more than pretty much any other current celebrity, completely inaccessible, as if the colors she sees are completely different ones from the ones we see. In a strange way, even though music obviously made her famous and she is thriving as much as ever, her album output can sometimes seem beneath her, in the way that Keeping Up with the Kardashians has started to seem beneath Kim Kardashian as she has become more globally prominent. The music, or the reality show, seems increasingly an afterthought in light of the ever-growing personality . The main accomplishment Sunday night, all elements considered, would seem to be delivering Rihanna, the persona and the personality, to an audience of ecstatic fans.

During one of the breaks to talk to the audience, Rihanna criticized her front row for their lack of enthusiasm (“Y’all’s shit is mad expensive. Y’all don’t feel like you’re getting your money’s worth?”) which, again, just made me jealous Rihanna wasn’t lambasting me . Later, saying her good-byes, she reflected, in response to the crowd’s disappointment at the concert’s ending, “I want to stay out here with you guys, too. I ran out of DVDs to watch on the bus. It ain’t shit out there. This right here, this is my shit.” She launched into her next song, and, after gazing at her transfixedly for about a minute as she belted “Love on the Brain” in a loose, mustard-colored ensemble, I turned to my friend. “I want that coat,” I said. He nodded in agreement.

Rihanna Goes Back to School With Anjelica Huston and Chloe Cherry for Latest Fenty x Puma Campaign

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

Rihanna is school-ready in her newest fashion stunt. The singer and businesswoman fronts the Fenty x Puma Creeper Phatty “In Session” campaign, which was released on Thursday to promote the latest iteration of the Creeper Phatty sneaker.

Rihanna signed as the creative director of the campaign, which was shot by Philippa Price. The singer included a varied cast to represent different characters from the high school universe, including the theater kid, the popular girl, the nerd and even a class pet. Chloe Cherry from “Euphoria” portrayed the school’s emo girl while award-winning actress Anjelica Huston became the principal.

All of the models, including Rihanna, are wearing dramatic versions of typical schoolwear pieces, including oversized dresses, monogrammed suits and statement ties.

The Fenty x Puma Creeper Phatty “In Session” sneaker, highlighted in the campaign, is now available in three new colorways: triple-black and classic red and white corduroy. The style comes in sizes for all ages and can be purchased at puma.com, Puma Stores and global retailers such as Foot Locker, JD Sports and Zalando.

“Your whole school will be wearing the Creeper Phatty’s and this campaign plays with that vision. We chose these colors and material very purposefully for back-to-school. The black-on-black corduroy remind me of my very own childhood, a uniform approved shoe with the twist I always wish I had,” Rihanna said via statement.

Rihanna first teamed up with Puma in 2014 as the brand’s global ambassador and creative director, overseeing the women’s division. In 2015, they released the successful Creeper sneaker, which earned Rihanna the Shoe of the Year Award at the FNAAs in 2016. The initial partnership ended in 2018. Five years later, Puma announced Rihanna’s return with a new Fenty x Puma line. In November 2023, Rihanna reintroduced the Fenty x Puma collaboration with the Creeper Phatty, an updated version of the original Creeper.

Rihanna's son RZA, 2, looks just like his dad A$AP Rocky in adorable photos

Rihanna and A$AP Rocky' s eldest son, RZA, is proving that style runs in the family! The two-year-old made an irresistible appearance alongside his dad, showcasing pieces from his mom's renowned Savage X Fenty line.

In utterly charming photos shared on the brand's Instagram account, RZA looked adorable perched on his father's shoulders. The toddler donned a black tank top and matching briefs, perfectly mirroring his dad's outfit.

The post, captioned "A$AP Rocky and RZA in Savage X Classics," captured the hearts of fans worldwide.

The 34-year-old rapper , sporting identical attire, proudly displayed his fit form. In a heartwarming second photo, A$AP Rocky turned his back to the camera, revealing intricately braided cornrows spelling out "Dad," a detail that delighted followers.

"Does ASAP cornrows say ‘DAD’ or am I seeing things?" one follower queried, while another exclaimed, "It’s the baby briefs for meeeee!"

The post received an outpouring of love, with one fan summing it up perfectly: "Love everything about this. The son. The father. The boxers. All."

This is a special milestone for the couple as it's the first time they have included one of their children in a clothing campaign. Rihanna and A$AP Rocky are also parents to Riot Rose, who will turn one in August.

Rihanna founded Savage X Fenty in 2018, and the brand quickly became a sensation, being named one of Fast Company's 10 most innovative style companies of 2020.

By 2021, it had reached a valuation of $1 billion. While fans adore her fashion and beauty lines, many are eagerly awaiting new music, as Rihanna hasn't released an album since 2016's "Anti."

The love story between Rihanna and A$AP Rocky began long before they became a couple. The two have been friends and collaborators for years.

Rocky opened for Rihanna's Diamonds World Tour in 2013, and she starred in his "Fashion Killa" music video that same year. Their friendship blossomed into romance in 2020, with an insider confirming their relationship to People in November of that year.

In a 2021 interview with GQ, Rocky gushed about Rihanna, calling her "the love of [his] life" and "the one." He also expressed his desire to become a father, saying, "If that's in my destiny, absolutely. Nah, but like, I think I'd be an incredible, remarkably, overall amazing dad."

Rihanna echoed these sentiments in an April 2022 interview with Vogue, where she candidly discussed her thoughts on motherhood. "I always thought it would be marriage first, then a baby, but who says it has to be that way," she remarked. "I'm certainly not gonna let that get in the way of me being a mom."

A year later, Rihanna reflected on her journey into motherhood, describing it as "legendary" and "everything." She added, "You really don't remember life before, that's the craziest thing ever."

In the same Vogue interview, she admitted that balancing her roles is a challenge but also incredibly stimulating. "Everything right now is firing off. I'm excited. It's getting me super motivated, super energized to do new things, to create. And I'm back in the studio and now we're going to be back on stage for the Super Bowl, which is just crazy that I even agreed to that, but I am, and I'm excited."

"Of course being a new mom is insane. It is lovely. It is epic, honestly," she concluded, capturing the whirlwind experience of her multifaceted life.s

Heart’s Ann Wilson Undergoing Cancer Treatment as Band Postpones 2024 Tour

By Jon Blistein

Jon Blistein

Heart have postponed their remaining North American tour dates after Ann Wilson revealed that she is undergoing cancer treatment.

In a statement, Wilson said she recently “underwent an operation to remove something that, as it turns out, was cancerous.” The musician said she’s “feeling great” after the “successful” procedure, but she’s decided to follow her doctor’s advice to “undergo a course of preventative chemotherapy.”

Wilson continued: “And so my doctors are instructing me to take the rest of the year away from the stage in order to fully recover. To the ticket buyers, I really do wish we could do these gigs. Please know that I absolutely plan to be back onstage in 2025. My team is getting those details sorted, and we’ll let you know the plan as soon as we can. Thank you all for the support. This is merely a pause. I’ve much more to sing.”

Heart’s decision to cancel their remaining 2024 shows comes after a European tour (originally scheduled for June and July) was called off at the end of May. At the time, the band said only that Wilson would be undergoing a “time-sensitive but routine medical procedure for which the minimum recovery time is six weeks.”

Heart’s 2024 shows notably found sisters Ann and Nancy Wilson reuniting after they put the band on hiatus between 2016 and 2019 due to a family spat . In the interim, the two toured under different banners, as Ann put it to Rolling Stone in an interview about their reunion earlier this year: “We just got really tired of not playing together, and we both wanted to do a Heart tour. So then there is this question hanging in the air: Can Heart be Heart without Ann or can Heart be Heart without Nancy? It never could … We just went, ‘Well, let’s do what we have to do.’ Our discomforts of the past, at least from my perspective, have really been ironed out.”

As Luke Combs comes to MetLife, country crossovers keep rocking the music world

3 minute read.

rihanna tour 2016

Pass the cowboy hat, please. The music world is in the midst of a crossover craze bridging hip-hop and R&B with country music — and fans, for the most part, are loving it.

“I love country, so happy for her that she’s doing whatever SHE wants to do musically,” commented a fan on Beyonce’s YouTube post of her country “Texas Hold ’Em” single. “No matter what. Remove the labels and walls. Yessss!”

“Texas Hold ’Em” was a co-lead single of Beyonce’s country album, “Cowboy Carter,” which debuted at No. 1 on the Billboard album and country charts when it was released in March.

Conversely, country hit makers are enlisting hip-hop and R&B talent to appear on their records, including Morgan Wallen, who had a hit with “Broadway Girls in 2021 with Lil Durk, and Luke Combs, who released the single, “Nothing Like You,” with Rod Wave last year.

Combs’ Growin’ Up and Gettin’ Old Tour comes to MetLife Stadium on July 19 and 20. There will be plenty of cowboy hats in the audience, as there were last summer when Beyonce’s Renaissance World Tour played the stadium.

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

“I just went to the Megan Thee Stallion show at Wells Fargo Center (in Philadelphia) and there were so many girls in pink cowboy hats,” said Sean Salm, creator of the Philly-based Sad & Boujee party, which merges hip-hop and emo rock. “Megan Thee Stallion doesn't do any country songs, but her whole look and brand is country.”

In New Jersey, country music has hit the big time. Wallen played MetLife Stadium on May 17 and18, followed by George Strait with Chris Stapleton and Little Big Town on June 8. After the Luke Combs' shows on July 19 and 20, Kenny Chesney plays MetLife on Saturday, Aug. 17.

“Country has gotten bigger and bigger (in New Jersey) every year,” said DJ Big Country, aka Christopher Smith of Jersey City, in a previous interview. “I'm glad it's getting to the bigger stadiums like MetLife and Lincoln Financial in Philly. PNC (Bank Arts Center in Holmdel) was always the spot, even the Stone Pony in Asbury Park."

The walk-up music before Wallen’s recent MetLife shows included tracks by hip-hop’s Kendrick Lamar and R&B’s Rihanna.

“I think that the public has been integrated in a good way where there’s nothing wrong, so to speak, and that’s a loose term, with being a Luke Bryan fan and knowing the words to his songs and being a fan of (American rapper) Waka Flocka Flame, or whatever the case may be,” said Philadelphia deejay legend DJ Deejay , aka David Cassidy.

Lil Nas X to Beyonce

The new wave of country and R&B and hip-hop crossover started, it can be argued, when Cardi B brought Lil Nas X and Billy Ray Cyrus on stage with her at the 2019 Summer Jam at MetLife Stadium. Lil Nas X’s “Old Town Road” was a hit record, but Billboard removed the song from its country music chart, stating to Rolling Stone that although it “incorporates references to country and cowboy imagery, it does not embrace enough elements of today’s country music to chart in its current version.”

“We’re going to put our mother(blanking) cowboy hats on,” said Cardi B as Little Nas X and Billy Ray Cyrus, who sings the chorus, came out on stage. “Where’s my mother(blanking) cowboy hat at! We got a legend coming to the stage!”

Cardi B and her backup dancers broke into saddle shuffle dance moves while Lil Nas X roamed the stage and Cyrus crooned into his microphone.

The country crossover explosion came in March with the release of Beyonce’s “Cowboy Carter” album. The hitmaker, who’s mostly been associated with R&B to this point, had dabbled in the country genre with the song “Daddy Lessons” on the 2016 “Lemonade” album. She performed the track with the Dixie Chicks on the CMA Awards.

“The criticisms I faced when I first entered this genre forced me to propel past the limitations that were put on me,” said Beyonce of “Cowboy Carter” on social media. “(The album) is a result of challenging myself, and taking my time to bend and blend genres together to create this body of work.”

Beyonce’s conquest of the country charts seems to be opening doors. Shaboozey’s “A Bar Song (Tipsy)” followed Bey’s “Texas Hold ’Em” on the Billboard Hot Country Songs Chart, marking the first time two Black artists have held the position consecutively.

Now there seems to be weekly updates in cross-genre news. The latest is hip-hop’s Post Malone teaming with Wallen for the county rap hip “I Had Some Help.”

“I think that one of the good things to come from the streaming era is that people listen to so many different genres of music together so artists feel free to experiment,” said Rissi Palmer, whose 2007 single “Country Girl” broke a 20-year drought for Black women appearing on the country charts. Rissi currently hosts the Color Me Country podcast.

Crossover in the digital age

County and R&B music have been at the top of the charts for decades. In 1965, music fans heard both Roger Miller’s “King of the Road” and James Brown’s “Papa's Got A Brand New Bag” on the WABC airwaves in the New York City area. The consumption of music in the digital age, where there is a greater emphasis on albums, has seemingly triggered the crossover experience.

“Once upon a time there was albums, and albums were created to be a time and a place,” DJ Deejay said. “Once you had Napster you began (to see) you saw a migration away from people being interested, and iTunes had a lot to do with this, in full albums.”

The emphasis on digital singles has broadened audiences, Salm said.

“The crossover thing keeps things fresh and interesting, and it keeps the artists growing their brands — and it doesn’t keep them tight-casted to one audience,” Salm said. “If you want to be a pop star you have to cast a wide net.”

Some question how organic the crossover movement is.

“There’s a Black world that does not include country music,” said Leon Trent, an Asbury Park music legend who released several singles with the R&B vocal group the Broadways for MGM Records in the ’60s. “Country music became so inclusive in society because in the beginning it was nothing but white people and the Grand Ole Opry, where you didn’t have any Black people but maybe one or two, Charley Pride. The Black man with a guitar was not playing country music — he was playing soulful blues music.”

In addition to the big summer of country at MetLife, there are some outreaches of the scene in Asbury Park.

“Asbury will never claim Nashville’s title in country music, but we’ve seen lots of folk and Americana influences emerging in the Asbury scene, meshing with the local R&B,” said Joe Pomarico, founder of the city's Telegraph Hill Records and a producer and engineer for Atlantic Records, via email. “Telegraph Hill’s annual What a Wonderful Year festival has become known as a showcase for a healthy mix of genres: hip hop, R&B, folk, and that good ole rockin’ Jersey sound.”

'Bring people together'

Combs’ biggest hit so far is his cover of Tracy Chapman’s folksy 1988 song “Fast Car,” which was a hit on the pop and rock charts in 1988. Combs’ version was a 2023 hit on the country and pop charts. The two performed the song together at this year's Grammy Awards.

It’s about breaking out of restraints, Palmer said.

“I think the biggest roadblock is an artist having a fan base or label that doesn’t allow them to grow and evolve musically,” Palmer said. “It’s very easy to get locked into what makes you popular but may not necessarily feed your creativity.”

What’s next? Salm’s crew is working on a rodeo disco night.

“It’s bringing people of all colors, religions together so people can have an absolute blast together,” said Salm of the crossover movement. “Total strangers who have never met and I think that is so important when it comes to bring people together in music.”

Go : Luke Combs, 5:45 p.m. Friday, July 19, with Cody Jinks, Charles Wesley Godwin, Hailey Whitters, and Wilder Blue, and 5:45 p.m. Saturday, July 20, with Jordan Davis, Mitchell Tenpenny, Drew Parker, and Colby Acuff, MetLife Stadium, One MetLife Stadium Dr., East Rutherford, tickets start at $104.50; metlifestadium.com.
