The Weeknd is the stage name of Abel Tesfaye (born February 16th 1990), a Canadian alternative R&B singer of considerable critical acclaim and commercial success. He has released one studio album, a compilation album and three mixtapes since his debut in 2011.

Tesfaye dropped out of high school at age 17 and left his native Scarborough, Ontario for Toronto. He began his music career in 2009 by dropping tracks anonymously on YouTube. The Weeknd co-founded the record label XO in 2011 and released three mixtapes in the same year: House of Balloons, Thursday, and Echoes of Silence.

The Weeknd’s mixtapes began to make noise as people responded to his unique R&B style and mysterious identity. His three mixtapes were downloaded eight million times, an astonishing audience for an artist without even a debut album to their name.

In 2012, The Weeknd signed with Republic Records and re-released his mixtapes as a compilation album, Trilogy. The album was met with positive reviews from critics, and it reached number four on the charts in the US and number five in Canada. At the end of 2012, The Weeknd embarked on a concert tour to promote Trilogy.

He dropped his debut studio album, Kiss Land, in 2013. It debuted at number two on the US Billboard 200 chart and sold 95,000 copies in its first week.

After the release of Kiss Land, The Weeknd wrote a song for the film Fifty Shades of Grey. “Earned It” went on to win a Grammy Award for Best R&B Performance. The song was also nominated for an Academy Award for Best Original Song.

In 2014, The Weeknd collaborated with Ariana Grande on her song, “Love Me Harder.” It climbed to number seven on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. In September of that year, The Weeknd kicked off his first headlining tour at Barclays Center in New York.

In May 2015, The Weeknd released the second single from his upcoming album. “The Hills” entered the Billboard Hot 100 at number twenty and climbed all the way to the top, making it his first number-one single. The full album, Beauty Behind the Madness, dropped that August and reached number one in Canada, Australia, the UK, and Norway. The Weekend promoted the album by headlining several summer music festivals, including Lollapalooza.

Beauty Behind the Madness was certified double platinum in the US, selling 1.5 million copies worldwide. It was the most-streamed album of the year and produced three platinum singles. It also won a Grammy Award for Best Urban Contemporary Album.

Following this major success, The Weeknd embarked on his first arena tour. The Madness Fall Tour kicked off in his home country at Toronto’s Air Canada Centre.

At the end of 2016, The Weeknd released his third studio album, Starboy with an eponymous lead single featuring legendary French electronic duo, Daft Punk. After reaching number one in several countries, the song became the duo’s first chart-topping hit and The Weeknd’s third.

Debuting at number one on the US Billboard 200 chart, Starboy became The Weeknd’s second consecutive number-one record. It also took home a Grammy Award for Best Urban Contemporary Album, making it The Weeknd’s second win in that category. The album was certified four-times platinum by the RIAA.

In support of the album, The Weeknd embarked on the Starboy: Legend of the Fall Tour in early 2017. It kicked off at the Ericsson Globe in Sweden.

2018 was another big year for The Weeknd. In February, he collaborated with Kendrick Lamar on “Pray for Me”, a song from the Black Panther film soundtrack which peaked at number seven on the Billboard Hot 100 chart. The next month, Tesfaye released his first EP, My Dear Melancholy. Debuting at number one on the Billboard 200 chart, it became The Weeknd’s third number-one album.

In November, The Weeknd released his first greatest hits album, The Weeknd in Japan, with songs from the setlists of his 2018 The Weeknd Asia Tour.

In 2020, The Weeknd released his fourth studio album, After Hours. The first two singles, “Heartless” and “Blinding Lights,” both peaked at number one on the Billboard 100 chart. “Blinding Lights” also went on to become the first song in history to hold a top-ten spot for an entire year.

To date, The Weeknd has sold over 75 million records and remains one of the top-selling artists of all time. In 2020, Time magazine named him one of the most influential people in the world. His work toward racial equality and food security has also earned him the title of Goodwill Ambassador for the Global Food Programme.

In January 2022, The Weeknd released his fifth studio album, Dawn FM. He is currently promoting it on his After Hours til Dawn Tour. Catch him live through November 27.

Live reviews

The quintessential emotional artist, The Weeknd brings to stage an performance packed with passion and a desire to please the audience.

The first time I heard his mix tape "House Of Balloons" I instantly thought "damn this music sounds sexy." The production behind each track is practically flawless. What straps your ear to the speaker is the remnants of Michael Jackson mixed with a sound of James Blake streamlined into one perfect-pitch voice. The acoustics of Radio City (NYC) amplified his voice so well it felt like an invisible blanket wrapping you up in soft and warm harmonies. His stage energy is off the chart and he interacts with the crowd throughout his entire performance. I also found the concert production to be stellar, there were LED lighting panels that covered the entire stage re-creating the streets of Tokyo, Japan. The usage of cameras in the stage to project the image of the crowd and The Weeknd on the LED panels is another way in which he kept the audience sucked into his performance. If I didn't know better I would say his dance moves come straight out of a Michael Jackson video from the 90s. Soulful, lively, passionate, and a sexy sound is how I would have to sum him up. The Weeknd is a must see!

Abel Tesfaye known as "The Weeknd" is a Canadian R&B artist from Scarborough, Ontario. A district of the city Toronto. He left home one weekend and never came back. Hence the name The Weeknd. The Weeknd's music is very sexy and most likely aimed to women. His lyrics contain sexual content and his desires of what he would like to do to them. When you are there. Live. In front of him. It really does feel like he is singing to you! His band knows what he wants and knows how to please an audience. There's Japanese writings and visuals that were incorporated since it was the theme of his recent album "Kissland" The fans go wild and you can't help but go wild too!

The feeling of being there is intense! You even got to have a chance to meet him so he could sign your CD! This gives you ladies a chance to see him one on one! Of course the line will seem like its forever but it is definitely worth it. He inspires so many aspiring singers to go after their dreams.

His vocals were claimed to be "the next Michael Jackson" and I sure do agree! A very sexy and soothing voice and I really do think everyone is with me on this one! The vibe of being there is amazing and it is a privilege for anyone to go there!

This review might not be completely objective as Abel has been my favourite singer for a few years now. However, I can definitely admit the Starboy tour date in Paris was the best pop concert I've been to this year. Even though some songs could have been put out of the tracklist, he mostly sang his catchiest songs of his career, no matter the era. He has great, or should I say, tremendous energy as he continuously sang twenty-something songs with no pause in between. He has no trouble reaching high notes live, his voice sounding even more heavenly in real life. That night, he invited Travis Scott on stage who pumped up the crowd more than him, which is a shame and showcases very well his lack of success and recognition in France, yet, in a sold out stadium. Most people actually didn't even know his real name or the lyrics of his songs ! I would recommend any "real fan" who has known him for a while or who likes his last album a lot to go to a Starboy tour date. I promise you, you won't regret it.

I loved it! There were 3 openingsacts, which I thought were a lot but they were all really good! I really enjoyed Bryson Tiller, I really think he has great potential. But The Weeknd was everything. It was even better than I could imagine and I was thinking big. He did a lot of songs and everybody was singing along and everything just was so perfect. He sounded amazing and with one song he let us all sing and nobody could hit the high notes and he smiled so freaking cute. It went by so fast. Also it was quite funny how big of an age difference there was between the fans. There were elderly people, like a grandmother and her granddaughter together and this elderly couple,... Of course there were a lot of young people. And there also were young teenagers with their friends. Everything was organized very well. And I would definitely go again.

The concert was absolutely stunning. A starship was used and the lights were coordinated very well. Abel sang amazingly in person and I loved jumping up and down screaming with other members of the audience while he sang. The concert was truly magical and I enjoyed every second Abel stood on stage.

As for the other singers who appeared on stage, I was very satisfied with their singing as well. They did an amazing job and captured the entire audience. In between Abel's music, the other singers such as Lil Uzi and 6lack played their hits on stage and the whole crowd became even more alive. If I the concert played out any other way, I'm sure I wouldn't have enjoyed it as much as this concert.

This concert was awesome. The lines were a block away and round a corner it was crazy. We waited bout 2 hours but some waited even more. The weekend had a great live band with solos. I had made it to the near front on the floor.next time I will just be on the balcony because there was a lot of pushing going on throught the night. Not only that but it was like being in a sweat box. A lot of people were allowed to smoke ganja and there were drinks to be served of course. About two people passed on near me which is scary but predictable at a concert extreme as this one. Over all a memorable experience for me and my friends.

The Weeknd was my first official concert and will be my most memorable. The emotion of the songs live is so fulfilling just knowing he's right there in front of me, it's like some weird connection that I can't explain. He felt the song when he sang it and I think that is so unique, most artists sing it so much it's just putting on a performance for them but this was deeper than that. I wish I could relive that feeling again, where I get chills when he can hit that notes so well. I don't care if this review gets published, I just wanted to state how this concert felt.

This was such a great show!! I would definitely see him live again.

-great light display/props/theatrics

-he sang music from all his albums which was well appreciated!

-he interacted with the crowd

-he sings AMAZING live

-chill atmosphere

-performers/musicians were smoking weed on stage

-Abel took a longgg time to get on stage, we were there for almost two hours before he did

-crowd was very drunk & rude (not his fault)

-merchandise was very expensive (I payed $40 for a t-shirt)

The show was awesome!!! No surprise, The Weeknd is even better live than he is on record! Nonetheless, his beautiful voice blows me away every time I hear him. Such a true, talented artist; one of the few left in our generation. Again the show was great, the only thing I wish was different was that I wish the show was longer than an hour & a half-2 hours and I would have loved to have heard some of his older songs!

kerrih20’s profile image

The Weeknd is amazing live. His voice is incredible and he is beyond talented. Also, the stage production for the Legend of the Fall tour was unlike anything I've ever seen before. The Star Destroyer-esque prop moving above the stage was so cool. Loved every minute of it. Well worth the outrageous cost of the ticket for an obstructed view by the stage.

How To Spend A Fabulous Weekend In Beautiful Portland, Oregon

the weeknd tour portland oregon

  • Destinations
  • United States

Portland, Oregon, recently recognized by Time magazine as one of “America’s greenest cities,” is nature at its finest. With the lushness of parks and green spaces, folks are drawn to Oregon’s “City of Roses.” The downtown is a unique hub of activity with various fun activities and unique attractions.

Portland is the largest city in Oregon. Located at the confluence of two rivers, the Columbia and the Willamette, the city lies between mountains and foothills. The biggest mountain is Mt. Hood , which is often visible throughout the city. On clear days, one can also see Mount St. Helens , Mt. Adams , and Mt. Jefferson .

The city is easy to reach by either car or plane. If arriving by car, the major highways are I-5 (north/south) and the I-84 (east). Portland International Airport is linked to downtown via light rail. The excellent public transit in the city means you don’t even need to rent a car.

My trip was sponsored by The Nines, Travel Portland, Hotel Zags, and Virgin Experience Gifts. All opinions and ideas are my own.

Things To Do In Portland

Enjoy the beauty of the parks, smell the roses, visit museums, attend music and dance productions, or take a sip at a craft brewery; there are various activities for all.

1. Enjoy The Activities And Green Spaces At Washington Park

Washington Park is the crown jewel of Portland’s massive park system. The 30-acre site houses six attractions, including three of my favorites: The International Rose Test Garden, the Portland Japanese Garden, and the Oregon Zoo. A free shuttle operates daily.

The Portland International Rose Test Garden

2. Smell The Roses At the International Rose Test Garden

Smell the roses at the International Rose Test Garden . With over 10,000 rose plants and 610 varietals, strolling through the garden is a feast for the senses. The garden is lovely to visit year-round, with the peak seasons being spring and summer when Oregon’s roses are in their prime. The ADA-accessible garden is free to visit.

3. Learn About The Animals At The Oregon Zoo

The Oregon Zoo ranks as the most popular paid attraction in the entire state. The 64-acre site is considered one of the top ten conservation organizations in the Pacific Northwest. Note that timed ticketing is required for zoo admittance.

The Japanese Gardens of Portland, Oregon

4. Marvel At The Portland Japanese Garden

The Portland Japanese Garden combines the three elements of vegetation, stone, and water in eight beautiful, unique Japanese gardens. The gardens overlook the city and provide lovely views of Mt. Hood .

5. Stroll The Park Blocks And Visit Museums

One of the oldest and most popular parks, the downtown Park Blocks invite visitors to stroll amongst the roses and greenery. The Portland Art Museum and the Oregon Historical Society are two popular museums along the park blocks.

Explore the Oregon Historical Society to learn the history of the state. Begin with the movie “Experience Oregon.” Take the time to visit the many exhibits detailing Oregon history through thought-provoking exhibits and digital platforms.

Pioneer Courthouse Square

6. Partake In The Action At Pioneer Courthouse Square

Portland’s “living room,” Pioneer Courthouse Square , is a local gathering spot with over 300 concerts yearly. Enjoy a beverage or lunch, relax on the brick steps, and watch the world pass by!

Architecture in downtown Portland

7. Stroll The Downtown And Admire The Historic Architecture

Portland boasts the “largest collection of cast-iron fronted structures outside of New York City.” The architecture using cast-iron boomed in the late 1800s. Many of these historic buildings now house shops, restaurants, and galleries.

8. Enjoy The Performing Arts

Enjoy a music or dance production at one of five major venues within the downtown area through Portland’5 Centers for the Arts . The Arlene Schnitzer Concert Hall is housed in a restored 1928 vaudeville house and is the home of the Oregon Symphony. The Antionette Hatfield Hall has three theatres. The Keller Auditorium features Broadway plays, ballets, operas, and other family events.

A Benson Bubbler in Portland

9. Quench Your Thirst With The Refreshing Drinking Water From A Benson Bubbler

The legacy of the Benson Bubblers heralds back to the early 20 th century, when a businessman donated funds to purchase and install 20 bronze water fountains. Several theories suggest the purpose. Whatever the reason, the Benson Bubblers are an iconic site in the city and “serve” almost 100,000 gallons of water daily.

Powell's Books in Portland

10. Get “Lost Between The Pages” At Powell’s Books

Plan a visit to browse through the pages at Powell’s Books , billed as the “world’s largest independent bookstore.” With more than 1 million new, used, and rare books, the main store, is located just off downtown. Color-coded maps are available to help guide you through the store. Check this link for Powell’s in-person events .

Steeplejack Brewing Co.

11. Visit Portland’s Craft Breweries

Portland is recognized as one of the two national cities with the most craft breweries per capita. I visited four with the Oregon Brewery Tour through Virgin Experience Gifts .

Portland U-Brew & Unicorn Brewing is a pub, brewery, home brew shop, and a U-brew. Classes are also offered. Visit the Original Brewery & Taproom of Baerlic Brewing Company . The large, spacious tasting room offers 15 taps of Baerlic beer and is family-friendly until 9 p.m. Baerlic Brewery was named Oregon Brewery Of The Year in 2017 and 2018.

Steeplejack Broadway is housed in a spacious, beautifully restored early-1900s church. Breakfast, lunch, and dinner are served daily. The site is family-friendly. Note that cash is not accepted for payment. The Glisan Pub of Migration Brewing offers award-winning craft beer and delicious food.

12. Enjoy The Solitude Of Portland’s Grotto

The Grotto is a 62-acre sanctuary for people of all faiths. Stroll through the lush greenery and enjoy a picnic at one of the picnic tables. From the upper level of the beautifully landscaped gardens, you can gaze at lovely views of the Cascade Mountains and Mt. St. Helens .

Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area

13. Fly Like An Eagle On A Columbia Gorge Scenic Flight

Close to Portland is the spectacular Columbia River Gorge National Scenic Area . The breathtaking 80-mile canyon offers sheer cliffs, waterfalls, grasslands, and the mighty Columbia River. We were in a tiny four-seater airplane and thoroughly enjoyed our 20-minute flight. One of the highlights is flying over the historic Vista House at Crown Point State Scenic Viewpoint. I was treated to this experience with a gift certificate from Virgin Experience Gifts .

14. Shop Till You Drop

With no sales tax, many folks love shopping in Portland. An upscale shopping center next door to The Nines, Pioneer Place has a variety of shops and restaurants. For everything Nike, visit the Nike Portland Store . Be sure to visit the third floor for the interesting display of The History of Air Jordan. The open-air arts and crafts market, Portland Saturday Market , has over 250 booths and a food court. The market claims to be “the largest continuous outdoor market in the nation.” Look for unique gifts, art, jewelry, and fresh produce.

Enjoy A Bite At The Cafes And Restaurants In Portland

15. urban farmer restaurant (the nines).

A beautiful spacious setting on the 8th floor of The Nines, Urban Farmer is decorated with lovely greenery and varied seating, all under a massive skylight. The restaurant is open for breakfast and lunch with varied menus. I enjoyed two breakfasts, the Farmhouse Breakfast Classic and the traditional eggs Benedict. I particularly liked the decoration of the jars of pickled fruit and veggies.

Luc Lac Vietnamese Kitchen

16. Luc Lac Vietnamese Kitchen

Recommended by a local, the Luc Lac Vietnamese Kitchen lived up to its reputation. A small restaurant within walking distance from the Nines Hotel, the menu features pho, banh mi, and other Vietnamese favorites. There are also gluten-free and vegetarian dishes. The counter service is speedy and pleasant.

17. Savor The Dishes At A Food Truck Location

Portland is well-known for its delicious offerings at food trucks. I chose The Whole Bowl Food Truck in Pioneer Courthouse Square . The food truck serves one dish: The Whole Bowl. It is a delicious combination of brown rice, black olives, sour cream, cilantro, Tali Sauce, salsa, black & red beans, cheddar cheese, and avocado. It was worthy of a second visit.

18. Park Avenue Cafe

Located a few blocks from Hotel Zags and across the street from Portland State University, Park Avenue Cafe is popular with the locals. The menu offers varied breakfast dishes, soups, salads, sandwiches, wraps, and paninis. Both inside and outside seating are available.

A meal at Departure Restaurant & Lounge — The Nines in Portland, Oregon

19. Departure Restaurant & Lounge (The Nines)

Departure Restaurant & Lounge , on the 15th floor of The Nines, offers Asian-inspired cuisine and Northwest favorites. I enjoyed the three-course Departure Experience. Guests may choose dishes from a variety of offerings. It was a meal fit for a king! Departure also features Portland’s most extensive sake list. Two outdoor patios and the main dining room offer beautiful views of Portland and the countryside. There is also a mushroom garden and a vegetable garden.

20. Hotel Zags Restaurant And Patio

The Hotel Zags Restaurant & Patio offers both inside and outside seating. Outside is a huge patio with lovely greenery and shaded tables. The menu features delicious salads, flatbreads, charcuterie boards, sandwiches, pasta, and meatballs.

The Nines

Hotels In Portland

21. the nines.

The Nines , Portland’s newest luxury hotel, is housed in the historic 1908 Meier & Frank Building. The luxurious rooms feature 9-foot ceilings, oversized windows, and a window seat for relaxation. Each guest room is “dressed to the nines” with refreshing colors of sky-blue and beige and features original artwork.

Throughout the hotel is a museum-like art collection valued at over $2 million. The 400 pieces of art beautify the atrium, library, restaurants, guest rooms, and lobby. The in-house art connoisseur offers tours, or if you prefer, a solo interactive art tour is available.

The "Gear Shed" at Hotel Zags

22. Hotel Zags

Hotel Zags is also located in the downtown area, within walking distance of Portland State University, Keller Auditorium, Portland Art Museum, Park Blocks, and Oregon Historical Society. Another draw for Hotel Zags is their Gear Shed . Guests of the hotel can borrow bikes, cameras, scooters, walking sticks, backpacks, and fishing rods.

There are so many fun and unique activities in Portland that it is easy to spend a fabulous weekend here. You might even decide that one weekend is not enough!

The Weeknd Cancels Australian Leg of ‘After Hours Til Dawn’ Stadium Tour

The Weeknd has canceled the Australia & New Zealand leg of his tour

Last year in November, The Weeknd announced he was postponing the Australia & New Zealand leg of his ‘After Hours Til Dawn’ tour. Now that leg has been cancelled entirely with full refunds offered.

The original postponement was describes as ‘unforeseen circumstances’ and the cancellation email received by ticket holders does not give an official reason for cancellation. Instead, it offers to make all ticket holders whole and to continue working “through the rescheduling process with the artist.”

“The Weeknd ‘After Hours Til Dawn Tour’ for Australia & New Zealand is still in the process of being rescheduled,” the email to ticket holders begins. “Whilst we continue to work through the rescheduling process with the artist, tickets for the existing 2023 tour will be cancelled. All purchased tickets will receive a full refund.”

“Ticket holders of the [cancelled tour] shows who previously held on to their tickets will be able to access a priority purchase window for the new tour in Australia and New Zealand when announced. In order to gain access to the priority pre-sale, please make sure you opt-in and join the waitlist.”

“Tickets will be automatically refunded in full (including refundable ticket purchases, if applicable) to the original payment method used for purchase and patrons do not need to take any action. Patrons should allow 30 business days for the refund to appear in their account.”

Prior to this cancellation, The Weeknd has not visited Australia in six years while touring. A peek at the official site for The Weeknd’s tour reveals there are no upcoming events—so Australian fans are out in the cold on this one yet again. Despite the cancellation, Abel Tesfaye has yet to post about the cancelled dates on social media. His most recent post is an Instagram post from April 13, insinuating that a new album will be dropping soon.

Fans stopped by social media to take their pot shots. “Bro completely forgot about his Australia tour,” one fan writes under the album announcement post.

Woman wins $1M in Oregon lottery raffle, credits $1.3B Powerball winner for reminder

the weeknd tour portland oregon

A forgotten lottery ticket stuffed in a Tupperware container made an Oregon woman a millionaire.

Leslie Carr, 52, a Portland resident, bought the $1 million lucky Raffle ticket for the March 15 drawing at a Fred Meyer in Happy Valley, the Oregon Lottery said .

“I had no idea I was the winner,” Carr told lottery officials. “If it weren’t for the billion-dollar Powerball winner making news, I would have forgot. We don’t check our tickets.”

After learning about the $1.326 billion Powerball win in her state, Carr took a trip to the grocery store where she purchased the tickets to check them. After checking almost all the tickets within her stash Carr checked the last one that gave her the message to visit the Oregon Lottery Headquarters. In disbelief she asked a Fred Meyer staff member to check her lucky ticket, the lottery said.

“I can’t cash this because your prize is worth over $1,000," the staff member told her.

The thought of winning cash from the lottery brought excitement to Carr.

“That’s when I started getting butterflies,” Carr told lottery officials.

After getting those tasks done Carr said she’d love to take a vacation in Hawaii.

Carr told lottery officials that the lottery win was, “a dream come true.”

What are the odds of winning the Raffle?
