When we compare the travel costs of actual travelers between Austria and Switzerland, we can see that Switzerland is more expensive. And not only is Austria much less expensive, but it is actually a significantly cheaper destination. So, traveling to Austria would let you spend less money overall. Or, you could decide to spend more money in Austria and be able to afford a more luxurious travel style by staying in nicer hotels, eating at more expensive restaurants, taking tours, and experiencing more activities. The same level of travel in Switzerland would naturally cost you much more money, so you would probably want to keep your budget a little tighter in Switzerland than you might in Austria.

When is the best time to visit Austria or Switzerland?

Both destinations experience a temperate climate with four distinct seasons. And since both cities are in the northern hemisphere, summer is in July and winter is in January.

Warm summers and cold snowy winters are what visitors should expect when visiting Austria. The Alps see plenty of snow, and the flatter lands to the east see a fair amount as well. Summer is a popular time to visit because of the warmth and the relatively low rainfall, too. Spring and autumn are both beautiful with pleasant temperatures and less crowds overall.

Because Switzerland is a mountainous nation and in the heart of Europe, you can expect cold, snowy winters here. But the summers can be warm, sunny, and pleasant. These warmer months are a great time to come for hiking and outdoor activities, as is the fall.

Both Switzerland and Austria are popular destinations to visit in the summer with plenty of activities. Most visitors come to Austria for the hiking and the family-friendly experiences during these months. In the summer, Vienna is around the same temperature as Bern. Typically, the summer temperatures in Vienna in July average around 23°C (73°F), and Bern averages at about 21°C (70°F).

I lived in Switzerland and Austria for 3 years each . Also, I traveled extensively through the countries, so I’ve gained a great understanding of them. In this article, I’ll answer all your questions , list the differences, and tell you which one is more worth visiting.

Switzerland has higher mountains , is more iconic , and more expensive than Austria.

The advantage of Switzerland is that you can enjoy breathtaking views, hiking, panoramic trains, and endless mountain excursions. You’ll also get a better value for your itinerary with a travel pass and many discounts on transportation, activities, and excursions.

Austria has lower mountains , rich art and music history , and is cheaper than Switzerland.

The advantage of Austria is that you can combine culture , art , and nature in your itinerary . But you have to pay for every single attraction as it doesn’t offer flexible travel passes as Switzerland does.

Is Austria Or Switzerland More Beautiful?

This is a difficult question, and I don’t dare to tell you one country is more beautiful than the other. It depends on your preferences .

Switzerland has more beautiful nature , while Austria has more beautiful cities and richer history .

Visiting Austria: Pros & Cons

Austria is generally better for a more diverse itinerary . It will include a bit of everything (nature, rich history with charming cities, music, art, wine-tasting).

Here are the advantages and disadvantages of visiting Austria over Switzerland:

Switzerland is generally better if your purpose for a trip is to spend as much time in nature as possible and enjoy breathtaking mountain views , hikes, and the excellent railway system the country has, including panoramic trains .

Below, I’ve listed a few advantages and disadvantages of visiting Switzerland over Austria:

Which Country Is More Expensive To Visit: Switzerland Or Austria?

Switzerland is more expensive to visit than Austria.

However, base your decisions on your interests and ask yourself which country you want to visit more. You can always lower your expenses , even in Switzerland (if you know how).

Let’s break down the costs for each travel category and country. Below, I’m giving you a great overview of the prices in Switzerland and Austria.

Switzerland Vs. Austria: Accommodation Costs

Accommodation is generally more expensive in Switzerland than in Austria.

➡ SWITZERLAND: Here is a breakdown of accommodation costs for each traveler type.

➡ As a  budget traveler , you can expect to spend around $40 daily. ➡  Mid-range travelers  spend, on average, $150 on accommodation per day (per person – considering you’re a traveling couple and split the cost). ➡ As a  luxury traveler , accommodation costs anywhere between $300 to $600 daily.

➡ AUSTRIA: The average cost of accommodation is:

➡ As a  budget traveler , you’ll spend around $20 daily. ➡  Mid-range travelers  spend, on average, $90 on accommodation per day (per person – considering you’re a traveling couple and split the cost). ➡ As a  luxury traveler , accommodation costs anywhere between $150 to $250 daily.

Austria Vs. Switzerland: Transportation Costs

Transportation costs vary depending on how you want to get around . So first, choose whether to explore the countries by car or train.

Car Rental & Gas Prices In Switzerland Vs. Austria

The car rental cost is more and less the same in Austria and Switzerland. You can expect to pay about $60 daily for a rental car in both countries (e.g., Opel Corsa or a similar car). Discover Cars offers great prices, so check their deals.

The gas is cheaper in Austria than in Switzerland.’

Train Travel Costs: Switzerland Vs. Austria

If you choose to travel by train, there are several options to make your journey more affordable.

The great thing about Switzerland is that it offers many travel passes and day passes, which will save you a lot . Austria doesn’t have many travel passes but offers discounted tickets for specific journeys (in advance) on their website.

Yet, you can also find discounted fares for each journey in Switzerland .

So the train transportation system is generally better in Switzerland than in Austria, and you’ll get more value overall traveling by train in Switzerland.

➡ The average cost of train travel in Switzerland is $70 per journey . But the costs are significantly lower if you get a travel pass.

➡ The average cost of train travel in Austria is $40 per journey .

PRO TIP: Austria is better explored by car, while Switzerland is equally perfect to explore by car and train.

Switzerland Vs. Austria: Cost Of Activities

Activities are generally cheaper in Austria than in Switzerland .

However, I’ll mention again that the travel passes in Switzerland have many benefits . Once you have them, you save on transportation. The passes also give you up to 50% discounts on activities and excursions, or they’re free with the pass.

➡ The activities in Switzerland cost, on average, about $60 .

➡ The average cost of activities in Austria is $20 per person .

The prices widely vary depending on the type of activity you choose to do.

Austria Vs. Switzerland: Food & Restaurant Meal Costs

The main difference in prices you’ll notice is in food and restaurants.

Restaurants are way too expensive in Switzerland . The food quality is often just average.

Restaurants in Austria are more than half the price of what you’ll pay in Switzerland. It’s honestly not worth it to eat out a lot in Switzerland. While in Austria , you’ll usually get good quality value from your restaurant meals.

Restaurant meals in Switzerland cost, on average, around $30.

The average price of a restaurant meal in Austria is approx. $16.

Interestingly, though, I found that the grocery food prices are more or less the same in both countries. Switzerland is still slightly more expensive when you go grocery shopping.

However, go to a low-cost supermarket such as Lidl … the prices will be more and less the same, with Switzerland being just slightly more expensive (about $10 – $15 more expensive for the entire grocery shopping cart).

I encourage you to take a pen and paper and list everything you want to do during your trip .

Then go through this list and see whether Switzerland or Austria matches your preferences and interests more.

Is Switzerland Or Austria Better For Solo Travelers?

Switzerland is better for solo travelers than Austria because I’ve met so many solo travelers in Switzerland. You can meet new people, make friends, and share the country’s beauty with them. Austria is a less popular destination.

But again, it depends on your interests ; if you don’t like nature and want to visit beautiful cities, Austria will be better for you as a solo traveler.

Is Austria Or Switzerland Better For Families?

Both countries are great for families. Each offers exciting activities and diverse things to do.

In terms of prices, Switzerland gives you better value than Austria. You can get a family travel pass , and your children can travel for free.

In addition, you’ll get discounts for activities and excursions.

Is Switzerland Or Austria Better For Honeymooners & Couples?

Both Austria and Switzerland are equally great for honeymooners and couples. Again, it only depends on your interests and what country you choose.

If your ideal vacation/ honeymoon is to enjoy pure nature with breathtaking views , wellness resorts , and a romantic environment, visit Switzerland .

If you want to combine nature with beautiful cities , rich history, art, and culture, visit Austria for your honeymoon/couple vacation.

Is Switzerland Or Austria Better For Backpackers?

Switzerland is better for backpackers than Austria. Because if you have a travel pass and a backpack, you can travel everywhere and do it all in Switzerland for a good price.

In Austria , you must pay for every ticket and spend more time planning your trip and booking single journeys. So that’s why Switzerland is better to visit for backpackers than Austria.

Is Austria Or Switzerland Better For Skiing?

Switzerland is better for skiing than Austria.

Switzerland has more and better ski resorts . You can choose from free-ride resorts to family slopes, advanced slopes, and easy slopes for beginners. The Swiss ski resorts are bigger and more diverse , with different slope types and more breathtaking views.

Austria still has great ski resorts but are not as big and diverse . The ski slopes are overall better for beginners or medium skiers. But there are not so many ski options in one resort as Switzerland offers.

Skiing in Switzerland is more expensive than in Austria by 20%.

Is Switzerland Or Austria Better For Hiking?

Switzerland is better for hiking because of two reasons. The first reason is the breathtaking views , which are better in Switzerland.

The second reason is that you can enjoy hiking in Switzerland more without suffering from hiking cliffs. You can take a cable car from a town to the mountains and hike.

While in Austria , you have to first pass through a steep or foresty section and only then enjoy hiking with breathtaking scenery.

Does Switzerland Or Austria Offer More Adventure Activities?

Switzerland offers more adventure activities . The Swiss have done a great job of creating adventure activities up on the mountains.

So you can go on thrill and cliff walks, fly above the mountains, paraglide, and enjoy Jet boats, kayaks, and more.

Austria offers many adventure activities similar to those in Switzerland. But Switzerland has slightly more exciting adventure options and unique activities.

Does Austria Or Switzerland Have More Spa Hotels & Wellness Resorts?

Both countries have many spa hotels and resorts. The main difference is that Austria has cheaper spa hotels than Switzerland. But Switzerland has more luxurious wellness resorts with better views than Austria.

So, I’d say Switzerland has slightly better wellness resorts and spa hotels than Austria .

Is Switzerland Or Austria Better For Culture & Art Lovers?

Austria is better for culture and art lovers. You can visit Vienna with its opera house, one of the world’s leading opera houses. Or explore Salzburg , where Mozart was born. Go for musicals, or make a Sound of Music tour .

Austria is perfect for cultural and musical experiences .

If you’re an art lover, visit the Albertina Museum in Vienna or small art galleries in other cities.

Is Austria Or Switzerland Better For Beautiful Scenery?

Switzerland is better for stunning scenery than Austria.

I’m gonna say this – Switzerland is the most breathtaking country (Norway is a big concurrence) regarding views. You’ll love it. The country will take your breath away in each corner.

Is Switzerland Or Austria Better For Visiting Cities?

Austria is better for visiting cities . It has more charming cities, more activities, museums, and galleries. Austrian cities are also generally more beautiful than those in Switzerland.

I highly recommend visiting Salzburg and Innsbruck , the two most beautiful cities in Austria. And Vienna has to be on your list, too.

Does Austria Or Switzerland Have Better Christmas Markets?

Austria has better and more beautiful Christmas markets than Switzerland. Austria’s Christmas markets are charming, with unique stalls and a magical atmosphere.

I especially recommend visiting Vienna and Salzburg to enjoy Christmas in Austria .

Switzerland also has Christmas markets, but they’re less beautiful than Austrian markets. If you want to visit Christmas markets in Switzerland , head to Lucerne, Zurich, or Basel .

Is Austria Or Switzerland Better To Live In?

Austria is a better place to live than Switzerland. I have lived in both countries, and Austria has better living conditions when I consider all aspects of living.

Austria is cheaper, has better groceries and cities, and the overall living situation is easier than Switzerland.

Switzerland is more expensive; you spend more going out and working than Austria, and there are not as many options for culture, art, and activities in the cities as the Austrian ones offer.

TIPS FOR VISITING SWITZERLAND AND AUSTRIA

Before you kick off your Switzerland and Austria trip, here are some tips to maximize your experiences! 

Visa For Switzerland and Austria

If you’re an EU citizen, you don’t need any extra visa – just your Schengen visa to enjoy your vacation time in both countries.

So go explore new lands without worrying about unnecessary paperwork – with so many great places to see, there’s no excuse for staying put at home! If you are not an EU citizen but have a Schengen visa, you can also visit both countries without hassle.

How to Get Into Switzerland/Austria

• For this itinerary, if you fly, I suggest flying into Zurich and leaving from Vienna – or the other way around.
• Both cities have international airports that are well-connected to the city center .
• From there, you can either pick up a rental car or use public transportation.

Again, I suggest starting in Zurich and leaving from Vienna (or the other way around).

• Both cities are also easily reachable from many cities in Europe via train.
• Arriving via train might be a good idea. Because it means you are already in the city center. Buses are also available but trains are probably the better option.

How to Get Around Switzerland and Austria

PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION

Switzerland has got your back! Their public transportation system is a well-oiled machine that will make sure you always arrive where you need to be. It’s so efficient it might just be the best in all of creation!

But I do not have major complaints about Austrian public transportation, either.

It is also less stressful than navigating small streets and packed city centers. Plus, it’s a cheaper option (most likely) that doesn’t limit your flexibility. 

TIP:   SWISS TRAVEL PASS

The Swiss Travel Pass allows you to use buses, trains, and boats without extra costs in Switzerland. Even some mountain excursions are included (like Mount Rigi), and for most others, you get a 50% discount. The Swiss Travel Pass also covers most museums and entrances to castles .

Yes, the Swiss Travel Pass is quite expensive but it will pay off (it always does when I get mine). There are passes for 3, 4, 6, 8, or 15 days available. I suggest, getting the 4-day pass for this itinerary, if you use public transportation. Click here to find the rates for a Swiss Travel Pass.

In Austria, public transportation is normally cheaper than in Switzerland. What I normally do is buy single tickets. Especially day passes for Austrian cities are quite affordable. 

➡️  GET YOUR SWISS TRAVEL PASS HERE

If you drive (in your own car), you need toll stickers for Switzerland and Austria. You can buy them at gas stations near the border or once you are in the country – but only use those roads once you have the sticker. If you have a rental car, they might (!) be already included.

For Austria, you can buy a 10-day toll sticker for around $10 (the shortest period possible). In Austria, there are a few private roads that charge extra . For this itinerary, however, you will not use them often.

For Switzerland, you would need to pay an annual sticker (about $40 or avoid motorways). 

While both countries are mountainous , they are quite easy to drive and a lot of fun. I actually enjoy driving in both countries. However, if you are not experienced in driving narrow mountain roads, this might not be the perfect choice for you.

Just watch the speed limit, only park when you are allowed to do so, and keep in mind that the streets can be narrow.

In case, you decide to rent a car, I suggest this site to find the best prices. I normally use my own car whenever I drive in Austria or Switzerland. I have used this site to find a rental car for other destinations, though (e.g. Albania).

Both countries are expensive – I mean like really expensive!  However, Switzerland is way more expensive than Austria. Check out my detailed tips on how to save money in Switzerland.

You can save a bit of money by bringing a reusable water bottle and refilling it with fresh water from the water fountains (they are numerous in both countries and at all of the places I mention here).

Tips are not really expected in either country. You can, but there is no need.  

In Austria, people speak a German dialect , while in Switzerland, there are four official languages. But the places on this itinerary only include German-speaking areas .

Since all of these places are very popular amongst tourists from all over the world, most people speak basic English , and you should be fine even if you don’t speak German (learning a few words never hurt, though).

PLACES TO VISIT IN SWITZERLAND

If you fly into Zurich (or get there by train), then your trip starts with a beautiful city in the northern part of Switzerland.

Zurich : 2  Days

Zurich is a beautiful city that serves as the unofficial capital of the country and will surely provide plenty of sightseeing opportunities.

Whether you want to explore the city’s main attractions or take a scenic jaunt outside the city and get up to stunning Ebenalp Mountain, there are plenty of activities for all types. 

My tip is to stay in Zurich for about 1- 2 days.  S o you can visit not only the main attractions in Zurich but also do a (half) day trip to the Rhine Falls or do another day trip.

TRAVEL TIPS FOR ZURICH

Public transport is top-notch, and if you’re looking for a more leisurely pace then why not rent a bike (for free!) and hit the roads in style? You’ll get around much faster than driving anyway, so leave your ride at home and explore on foot or with public transportation instead.

I recommend staying close to the city center, but since public transport is pretty good, you can also book a hotel a bit further away, and you will still be mobile.

From Zurich to Lucerne , it takes about an hour by car (or by train). Whichever means you opt for, it is easy and a nice ride/drive.

Lucerne: 2 Days

Lucerne and Zurich have one thing in common – they’ll make sure your wallet takes a big hit! 

Public transport within Lucerne is speedy, reliable and on time but keep in mind that guest cards only work for getting around inside the city center not outside (sorry Mount Rigi).

• Town Center (Lucerne has a beautiful old town which is home to some fantastic architecture)

From Switzerland to Austria – or From Austria to Switzerland: 1 Day

Switzerland is stunning but so is Austria – the towns, classic architecture, and breathtaking views will have your head in a spin! Grab a train or car ride from Lucerne to Hallstatt – for maximum convenience with minimal stress. Trust me though – this scenery won’t disappoint.

Are you ready for a scenic adventure? If so, getting from Lucerne to Hallstatt is definitely the road trip for you! It’ll take about 6-10 hours depending on how fast and often you want to stop. Are there any differences?

Both countries are located in the centre of Europe, have stunning mountain landscapes and everyone wears “Lederhosen” and “Dirndl”. Is that really the case? Keep on reading to find out what Austria and Switzerland have in common and in which categories they differ from each other.

What is the difference between the two cities Vienna and Zurich?

Both cities are considered as popular travel destinations with a high feel-good factor.  The Austrian capital offers a rich cultural life,  which seems almost disproportionate compared to the size of the city. The Viennese old town is dominated by  baroque spirit, historicism, Biedermeier idyll and impressive  buildings  from the past epochs.  When exploring the city centre, you pass many old shops, can buy fresh fruit s  and vegetables at one of the markets, have a look inside the charming courtyards and enjoy the fresh air and the unique old town flair. But not only the older buildings look magnificent,  also the modern architecture has made a name for itself in Vienna.   The skyline along the banks of the Danube is constantly growing and in 2013, thanks to the famous architect Dominique Perrault, the tallest building in Austria was created.

 If you like to spend a lot of your time outside, Vienna is a great place to be.  Two hundred and eighty imperial parks and gardens enrich our cityscape  and improve our very good air quality. There are many recreation areas like the  Prater, the Lobau or the Wienerwald,   which invite you to enjoy beautiful walks and hikes.

Zurich is located at the lakeside and life takes place along the riverbanks of the “Limmat”. The houses in the old town are characterised by their simplicity and elegance. One immediately recognises their preference for beautiful design. Also the dominance of the banks and expensive shops is clearly noticeable, which is why the atmosphere seems cold for some visitors.

In fact, both cities have an excellent infrastructure, offer a diverse cultural programme and a lot of impressive sights. That is why the country comparison starts with a draw.

What do the austrians have that the swiss don’t.

An  unmistakable joy of life.  It is true that the Austrians are very comfortable and don’t like to feel stressed, but  we know how to enjoy.  We focus on the beautiful sides of life and love to laugh a lot. We do not take life too seriously and rely on self-irony.  The cabaret scene enjoys a great tradition in Austria  and is an essential part of our culture.

The Swiss are said to be very style- and fashion-conscious. Quality is important which is why Switzerland has developed into a country of stability. Everything has to be put in the right place and potential chaos needs to be avoided. For some this vanity can seem a bit exaggerated, but the Swiss know what it is good for.

As one says: “Other countries, different customs”. However, we believe that guests from abroad appreciate the Austrian light-heartedness.

Are there similarities between the two neighbouring countries?

Of course, they exist.  An essential commonality is the size.  Both countries are relatively small compared to other European countries.

In Austria, more than 8.7 million inhabitants live on 83.871 square kilometres, and around 8.3 million inhabitants live in Switzerland on 41.277 square kilometres. In addition, both countries have  fantastic alpine regions,  which attract countless tourists every year. It is true that the Swiss mountains are higher than the Austrian ones but our  “Großglockner”  – 3798 meters altitude – is a must for every mountaineer. Thanks to the Alps, both countries are blessed with  outstanding air and drinking water quality.

For these similarities, both have earned a point.

Tourism – Who does a better job?

Clearly,  both countries are known for their splendid ski regions.  Winter tourism is booming and has a high economic importance.  The Austrians take their role as hosts very seriously and our  training opportunities in the tourism sector  are highly appreciated.   We like to spoil our guests and are happy to welcome people from all over the world. According to a survey among 17.000 users of the travel portal “Zoover”  Austria was elected the most hospitable country of Europe.   (Source: Salzburger Nachrichten)

Switzerland was ranked at the last place within the European comparison. One says that the Swiss hosts are not sensitive enough and one misses their charm while dealing with guests but the Swiss Tourism Association is already working on this.

For now, the point goes to Austria, since hard work needs to be rewarded.

The most striking difference – The language!

Regarding the language, Switzerland is a little bit complicated. Where else in Europe are there four official languages? While in Switzerland, you ride on a “Velo”, in Austria you sit on a “Radl”. “Hello” means “Gruezi”, and “thanks” goes like this: “Merci villmal.” Some may ask themselves if that is even German. The answer is: YES. Of course, we Austrians can communicate with the Swiss, but sometimes we struggle because of the differences in expression and the use of terms. “Schwyzerdütsch” (EN: Swiss German) is not a German dialect, as many people believe, but a n own language with its own vocabulary and specific rules.

Whereas in Austria you only learn standard German or the so called High German. According to the “Weißwurst equator” we even speak the most beautiful German in Austria.  It sounds softer, is more melodious and pleasing to the ear – characterised by our mountains and valleys as well as our diverse Austrian culture. This melodious sound goes back to our famous theatre tradition, from which also the term  “Burgtheaterdeutsch”  originated. It is known within the entire German-speaking area and stands for a particular beautiful usage of the German language.

I f you want to learn standard German  and avoid confusion, Austria seems to be the better option.

Cuisine – Who has the finer taste?

Both countries have a lot to offer in culinary matters. While in Switzerland you eat nut cake, “Biberli” (EN: a gingerbread speciality) or a piece of “Zuger cherry cake”, in Austria our  “Kaiserschmarrn” or a piece of the famous “Sachertorte”  will ensure a taste sensation. Typical for our neighbours is also the well-known cheese fondue or raclette.  

Once in Austria, you should not leave without having had at least one  “Wiener Schnitzel”, a piece of “Tafelspitz” or dumplings with sauerkraut.

Although Vienna is the only city in the world, which is the namesake of its own eating style, gourmets can be found in Switzerland too. A draw!

Sporting spirit – Who is more ambitious?

These two countries duel with each other in ski sport.  At the time it was Toni Sailer (AUT) against Roger Staub (CH), Franz Klammer (AUT) against Bernhard Russi (CH) and today it is Marcel Hirscher (AUT) against Carlo Janka (CH). However,  with 38 victories Austria is the most successful country , which has won the Nations Cup twenty-seven times in a row since 1990. But the Swiss continue to press ahead and so they also won the Nations Cup eight times.

Whether it is the Austrian skiing technique or the excellent equipment – they reach the finish line first.

The Swiss folk music vs. Viennese classic

Swiss folk music plays a big role in their culture. Typical instruments include the “Alphorn” or the “Schwyzerörgeli”. The different styles of the national folk music are referred to as “Ländlermusik”, which is also known as “Hudigäggeler” among the locals. Also the brass band is very popular in Switzerland, which is why the largest brass band music festival takes place here every five years.

Austria, however, is known for its classical music history.  Nowhere else have more famous composers lived than here. Classical music is the heart of our music history and the work of the great composers such as  Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Beethoven or Gustav Mahler  is still noticeable, you can visit a classical music concert almost every day. To the sounds of the Viennese waltz,  our hearts beat in three-quarter rhythm.

When it comes to classical music, Austria clearly wins the race, but in fact it is a matter of taste and so both countries earn a point.

Where is it more fun?

Well, the Swiss are not necessarily known for their sense of humour and something like the typical “Swiss humour” does not exist. What Swiss people laugh about often depends on the region they come from. People from the northern parts of Switzerland laugh about different jokes than people from Ticino. It doesn’t mean that the Swiss aren’t funny – quite the opposite. Like us Austrians, they can be very self-ironic and laugh about themselves.

We Austrians are known for the  “Wiener Schmäh”  (EN: Viennese kind of humour). It has a lot of sarcasm and charm in it but also expresses our dissatisfaction with many things in our country.  The Austrians like to entertain   and the “Wiener Schmäh” brings people together. And what is better than laughing together?

Humour always wins – Point for Austria.

Everyday life – Where is it nicer?

Both countries offer an outstanding quality of life, have excellent infrastructures and a well-functioning economic system. The scenic picture looks quite similar – both countries are characterised by breathtaking mountain landscapes, beautiful lakes and a lot of untouched nature. Differences can be noted within the current wage level. Although the Swiss earn a lot more, the costs of living are much higher than in Austria. Cities like Zurich or Geneva are among the most expensive places of residence in the world. The rental costs in Switzerland rose by 20% over the past 10 years. Today a flat in Switzerland costs on average EUR 1.300,00 per month. Also leisure activities are much more expensive. A visit to the theater followed by a dinner in a good restaurant can really burden the wallet. 

Since 2009, Vienna has displaced Zurich from its top position in Mercer’s annual quality of living ranking.  Austria convinces, among other things, with its  extensive educational offer, the very well developed public transport system as well as with the stable political and social situation.

Whether Austria or Switzerland – Everyday life can be enjoyed in both countries.

Whether a Swiss cheese fondue or a “Wiener Schhnitzel” – that completely depends on your taste. But if you would like to learn German and get to know other people, you should give Austria a chance. Switzerland and Austria are both stunning, mostly German-speaking countries nestled in Europe's stunning Alps. But both are famous for their picturesque Alps. The European Alps are divided between Switzerland, Austria, France, Southern Germany, Lichenstein, and Northern Italy - although we will leave Italy and other others for another day to compare.

So, that begs the question: who has better alps?

There's More To The Alps Than Switzerland & Austria

While Switzerland and Austria may be famous for their Alps, they are not the only countries boasting some of the best of the Alps Europe has on offer. This article was updated with suggestions to also consider the Alps in Italy, France, and Slovenia and a note that its cheaper to visit the Alps in Slovenia.

Switzerland arguably is more famous for its Alps than either Italy or Austria. It is often one of the highest countries to visit on people's budget lists of countries to visit. Indeed, its Alps and landscapes are utterly stunning. The country is both a natural ski resort and a natural fort (one of the reasons why Nazi Germany never invaded them).

Today the Swiss Alps draw skiers, hikers, and sightseers from all around the world to its famously neutral mountains. Its valleys and mountainsides are full of touristic alpine villages, lodges, and luxury hotels. They are serviced by an impressive network of trains, alpine trains, and cable cars all working efficiently to the minute. Some of its alpine villages have also forbidden passenger cars. Transport to, from, and around here are by train or on foot.

The country is the ideal destination for skiing and paragliding for those who can afford it. Switzerland is also a diverse (if not segregated) country, primarily being divided between German, France, and Italian regions, and the cultures of these regions can really feel different.

Switzerland is famous for its chocolate and cheese and has been an independent country in Europe for hundreds of years now. The Switz are often proud of their culture and traditions - so much so that the canton (a sort of state) Appenzell Innerrhoden was the last place in Europe to give women the vote. And that was only because of the intervention of the Federal Supreme Court of Switzerland that they did in the end.

Austria stands apart from this Swiss neighbor in many ways. Whereas Switzerland was a small alpine state for much of its history, Austria was the centerpiece of the large Austro-Hungarian Empire. Whereas Switzerland is linguistically and culturally diverse today, Austria is quite homogenous.

One of the legacies of being from such a large and powerful central European Empire is that Vienna was once its capital. Accordingly, the architecture there today is stunning, and one of Europe's finest, and is one of the reasons why people love visiting Austria . Austria may be a small country today, but it inherits the capital city of a formerly large and prosperous empire.

The stunning Austrian city of Salzburg and the Austrian Alps were the filming locations for the famous "The Sound of Music" movie . Today it is a fantastic place for hiking and offers much of the same that its neighboring Switzerland does. Additionally, it is cheaper than Switzerland (or perhaps it would be better to say less ridiculously expensive as it certainly isn't cheap).

The skiing, hiking, and paragliding here are all comparable to that of Switzerland. Like Switzerland, the villages in Austria are stunning with their rustic wooden Alpine-style homes nestled cutely in lush meadows in the Alps to the sounds of the clanging of cow's bells as they wander and graze.

The country's mountains are, however, substantially shorter than those in Switzerland. The tallest mountain is Großglockner which reaches 3,767 meters or 12457 feet in altitude. That is much shorter than Monte Rosa, with its height of 4,634 meters or 15,203 feet.

The highest of all the peaks is Mont Blanc which rises to 4,808 meters or 15,777 feet. However, it is not a part of Switzerland or Austria. Instead, it is on the border with France and Italy.

The beauty of the numerous alpine lakes of Switzerland are difficult to beat, even with the stunning mountainous landscape of Austria. There's something that makes Switzerland one of Europe's most popular tourist destinations, and that is the country's incredible natural landscape.

Austria is best chosen as a destination for those looking for a historical and cultural experience. As for those looking for a budget vacation, then they'd be better visiting Austria over Switzerland. However, travelers who want to have an epic Alpine experience are recommended to visit both Switzerland and Austria and maybe add Bavaria to their itinerary if they have a couple of weeks' time on their hands. After all, the alpine scenery in each of these destinations has its own charming characteristics.

The discussion of whether Austria or Switzerland have the better Alps makes it sound like they are the only two options. But that is not the case. If one would like to explore the stunning European Alps then also explore the French Alps (which is also home to Mont Blanc - the highest mountain in the Alps), the Italian Alps, and the Slovenian Alps. In case one would like to see the Germanic culture of the Alps, then one can also see it in South Tyrol - the German alpine region of Italy.

But the cheapest country to see the European Alps is likely Slovenia - it is certainly much cheaper than visiting the Alps in Switzerland. The Slovenian Alps are also home to a number of excellent attractions, like the iconic Lake Bled, with its only church on an island in the lake.

Take the time to see how the Alps differ with each country visited, as well as the culture of the people calling them home.

Both of the alpine regions of these countries are stunning and are broadly comparable. Austria has the advantage of being a less ludicrously expensive destination, while Switzerland is culturally more diverse. Austria's architecture and cities are arguably more impressive once one is out of the mountains but Switzerland has taller mountains (although neither have the tallest).

Its green meadows, sprawling farms, scenic countryside, and wonderful ski-resorts have made Switzerland the undisputed tourism capital of Europe.  Picture stunning panoramic views across sprawling turquoise lakes and in the back-drop the snow-covered peaks of the Swiss Alps.

Furthermore, this small European country is famous for its chocolate and cheese . And who isn’t a fan of at least one of those? So, if you are a foodie, you will definitely rejoice in Switzerland.

Moreover, if you are a history enthusiast you will enjoy strolling through Switzerland’s many charming towns and cantons – well-known for their beautiful Swiss-German architecture.

Finally, if you prefer things to be run in an orderly fashion, then you will love Switzerland. Because Switzerland is pretty small, its rains operate with perfect timing and pinpoint frequency. Changing trains is almost always smooth and straight-forward. In fact, all of Switzerland’s public transport is very well-organized and the standards of services are the same throughout the length and breadth of the country.

However, all these cultural highlights come at a cost. Switzerland is so highly frequented by tourists, that the Swiss economy has surged and most things are very expensive.

SPECTACULAR DESTINATIONS IN SWITZERLAND

Although Switzerland is smaller in size than Austria, it offers just as many spectacular destinations as its neighbor.

One of the main attractions of its capital Bern is that the city has retained its medieval European look and feel.

Zurich, on the other hand, is an international banking hub and as such offers a combination of traditional Swiss architecture and modern world sophistication.

Geneva is a hub of international diplomacy and the European center of trade and commerce. Thus, in many ways, it dominates the continent.

Other Swiss town and cities you might want to consider visiting include Lucerne, Interlaken, Zermatt, Lugano, Basel, Locarno, Lausanne, Andermatt, St. Moritz and Grindelwald.

AUSTRIA – AUTHENTIC AND CHEAPER?

Having read all about the beauty and charm of Switzerland, you might have come to a hasty decision. Clearly, Switzerland is the country you should visit.

Well, you would be wrong to dismiss Austria so quickly. Austria actually has far more towns with a rustic medieval alpine feel than Switzerland. Indeed, a lot of Switzerland’s towns and resorts are more industrialized and targeted at tourists than Austria’s.

Not only are Austrian cities frequently more charming than their Swiss counterparts, they are also often more vibrant and energetic. Austria has a much stronger focus on art, culture, and intellectual discussions. Perhaps because it is far more multi-cultural in nature than Switzerland.

Indeed, over the years Austria has had a much more liberal immigration policy than Switzerland. People from all other the world have moved into the country and each group of immigrants has introduced parts of their culture into Austria.

Those who return to Austria on a frequent basis, however, generally do because of Austria’s incredible hospitality. Most of Austria’s hotels and restaurants are family-run businesses. Throughout the many years, I have traveled to Austria,  I have never experienced bad service there (except perhaps in Vienna). Austrian people are incredibly friendly!

SPECTACULAR DESTINATIONS IN AUSTRIA

Vienna, the former capital of the Austro-Hungarian empire, empire is a city which lives and breathes art and culture. Its grand Imperial architecture still harbours the very best of Europe’s talents in the fields of music, art, literature, drama and live performing arts.

Salzburg, once home to Mozart, is an architectural marvel adorned with magnificent palaces, stunning lakes and amazing cultural delights.

Some more towns and cities you might want to visit in Autria include Innsbruck, Hallstatt, Zell am See, Linz, Aachen Lake, St. Gilgen and Kitzbuhel.

SWITZERLAND VS AUSTRIA – WHICH ONE SHOULD YOU VISIT?

So, Austria or Switzerland? Which one will it be? Well, it really depends on what you are after.

If you are a nature enthusiast and planning the ultimate European Alpine vacation, then you should probably travel to Switzerland. Although Austria’s mountainous landscape is stunning, it simply cannot beat the beauty of Switzerland’s many alpine lakes. After all, Switzerland’s incredible natural landscape, is what makes the country one of Europe’s most popular tourist destinations.

On the other hand, if you are after a cultural and historical experience, then you should choose Austria for your holiday getaway. Of course, another reason to pick Austria over Switzerland is the fact that it is generally cheaper. If you are a backpacker or prefer homestays to hotels, then you are definitely better placed in Austria than in Switzerland.

However, if you truly want to have an epic Alpine experience, then I suggest you visit both Austria and Switzerland. And perhaps Bavaria too. Each country has it’s own characteristics in terms of culture and the alpine scenery also varies across the borders. If you have two weeks or more, it should be fairly feasible to explore all three alpine countries.

Self & spouse wish to visit Switzerland, Austria & Czech Republic and any other countries in Europe for 16 to 20 days days in the last week of February 2022. We are 55+ years relaxed leisure travellers and love the nature like mountains, lake views, beautiful architecture etc. Can we get some suggestions and recommendations to plan our tour. Thanks.

Definitely Austria ( I would also include Sued Tirol in Italy} People are warm friendly and hospitable.My experience of the Swiss – alas – is that they are cold,unfriendly,uptight and money driven. Also Switzerland is extortionately expensive!

I have heard countless stories of rampant racial discrimination in hotels and restaurants even at tourist hotspots in Austria. So, my choice is gonna be Switzerland hands down.

Hi there great article. I’m glad you plugged Bavaria too. It’s actually fairly easy to do day tours to Switzerland and Austria from Bavaria. I stayed in Bavaria this summer and it was amazing, partially because of so many day trips to Austria. Innsbruck is an amazing city, as is Munich- all of the cities in that region have a similar feel. I would recommend anyone who wants to stay in Bavaria to stay in Bad Tolz or Tegernsee, a nice lakside town. Cheers

Hi Wendy. Depends on what type of holiday you are looking for. Do you want to go hiking? Then I would recommend Leogang. It is close to the Grossglockner and has some great routes. The people there are really friendly too. Alternatively, if you are looking for a city break, there is so much to see in Vienna (I will be publishing an itinerary soon. But the people are a little less friendly there.

I’ve actually never thought of going to either, but the pictures were beautiful enough to make me consider going to one next summer. I’m leaning towards Austria, though, because I like places with a less touristy feel.

I love Austria. We used to go every summer holiday And this year Gary and I went to Vienna. I would however recommend to start with the mountains. The people are a lot more friendly than in the big city.
