Safari Inn Bar and Restaurant Mombasa

Safari Inn Bar and Restaurant is a nice restaurant located halfway between Mombasa and Mtwapa, the owner is a nice German gentleman who never fails to welcome and greet all the guests of his restaurant, the waitresses are all very nice, the service, both at the bar at the table, is fast and precise.

The food is excellent with dishes of meat and fish, and in addition to the classic menu, every evening the chef proposes some special dishes.

At the end of dinner, depending on the night you are entertained by live music, karaoke or music with the DJ.

you can also play billiards while drinking a beer in peace together.

The prices are great and even late at night is always a taxy outside the restaurant to take him home.

Island Dishes Restaurant mombasa got a good review in a travel guide so I thought I would check it out. When you exit Fort Jesus, if you walk straight north you will be on Ndia Kuu Road.

This is the start of the Old Town Walking Tour and you will immediately see curio shops, antiques dealers, etc.

About 250 meters up and on your left is the Jahazi Coffee Shop and the next big intersection is Thika Road. Turn left and head west.

You are now leaving the Old Town. After a hundred meters or so you will enter the “Island” neighborhood of Mombasa: there is Island Butcher, Island Fashion, etc.

And right where Thika ends at Kibokoni Rd, you will see Island Dishes on Kibokoni, just south of Thika (note that Thika does not actually end here, but it turns into a tiny little ally at this point).

If you look at a Google Map of Mombasa you will see this place marked directly on the map. But they do not have a website.

Kenyans tend to eat lunch at 1PM and it was only noon so it was pretty empty when I got there.

It was clean and the staff was helpful. The waiter said the mutton biryani was just coming off the grill so I went with that.

The meat was very tender, slid right off the bone and the spices were strong without being overwhelming.

That, a plate of rice and the banana for desert were all I needed. Good portions, good food, nice people, pleasant atmosphere – what more I could I ask for?

How about this: the bill, including a soda, was just 230 shillings.

That’s $2.60 folks. You could pay five times that in a place geared for tourists and still not get food this well prepared by people this nice.

And as I got up to leave I noticed the place was filling up with locals, addressing the staff by name. That is always a good sign.

So take a hike out of the Old Town, see a little something different than the tour book itinerary (don’t worry, its safe as Thika is a busy main road) and have a good meal.
