ACCLAIMED WILDLIFE FILMMAKER GORDON BUCHANAN TO SHARE TALES OF LIONS AND TIGERS AND BEARS ON TOUR

Gordon Buchanan

Award-winning wildlife photographer and filmmaker Gordon Buchanan will hit the road in 2025 bringing his biggest ever live tour Lions and Tigers and Bears with Gordon Buchanan to Bournemouth.

With a life dedicated to exploring the untamed beauty of the natural world, Gordon Buchanan will visit 35 venues across England, Scotland and Wales – including a date at Bournemouth Pavilion Theatre on Friday, March 7.

Lions and Tigers and Bears with Gordon Buchanan will follow the huge success of Gordon’s sold-out 30th anniversary tour in 2023 and will see him recount tales from his thrilling encounters with some of nature’s most fascinating animals.

Tickets on general sale from Friday June 28, from the Pavilion.

Speaking about the new tour, Gordon said: “Lions and Tigers and Bears, oh my! It could be a line straight from The Wizard of Oz but there’s no fiction here, just amazing facts as I get the chance to bring to life the amazing adventures I’ve had the absolute privilege to experience. “Bears and big cats are the undisputed icons of the animal kingdom and I’ve spent a lifetime capturing them on film.

”From pandas in China to orphaned grizzlies in Russia, from high-altitude tigers in the Himalayas to jaguars in the depths of the Amazon; I have been fortunate enough to meet many of these incredible creatures in their natural habitats – and I love being able to share their secrets with audiences.

“There has been mud, sweat and tears, tender moments and terrifying encounters and I can’t wait to meet more animal lovers and tell more tales as I hit the road again.”

Hailed as Scotland’s own David Attenborough, Gordon Buchanan has dedicated his life to exploring the untamed beauty of the natural world, from forests to snowy landscapes, and from towering mountains to the depths of the great rainforests.

All his travels were with a single mission in mind: To capture the majestic bears and big cats on film and reveal their secrets to a global audience.

His new tour in 2025 will feature his adventures with pandas, grizzlies, tigers, jaguars and more – making for a night of adventure, awe and wonder.

Gordon grew up on the Isle Of Mull and began his career in filmmaking in 1989 as assistant to the acclaimed survival cameraman Nick Gordon – traveling to Sierra Leone to document animals in the Gola Rainforest. He went on to work on the Big Cat Diary series as well as the long-running expedition series Lost Land Of The… for the BBC.

The Family & Me documentaries began in 2010 when Gordon featured alongside Minnesota black bears, with Gordon going on to showcase some of the world’s most fascinating animals.

Most recently Gordon has been on screens as part of the presenting team on Our Changing Plant, a seven-year diary charting the fight to save the planet’s ecosystems. He is currently filming Big Cats 24/7, tracking lions, leopards and cheetahs in Botswana over a six-month period for a new BBC series.

How and where to see the Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition in 2022

The Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition tour is the best way to see these award-winning images, with stops in London, Bristol, Cardiff and around the UK. Here's our guide to where to see it in 2022.

Aoife Glass

Wildlife Photographer of the Year, run by the Natural History Museum in London, is considered the premier competition in the world of nature photography. The Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition is a showcase of winning and highly commended images from the competition. These showcase both the incredible talent of the photographer, but more importantly the wonders of the natural world, and the impact humans are having on it.

The exhibition brings together images from locations and photographers all around the world, with categories including animal portraits, behaviour, photojournalism and portfolio. There is an overall winner – Wildlife Photographer of the Year – and an overall winner for younger photographers with the Young Wildlife Photographer of the Year award.

The majority of the images are selected by a jury of photographers, editors, journalists, conservationists and scientists . The People's Choice award is selected by public vote, and is always a moving, striking image.

GRAND TETON

It is said that no photos will do it justice. Prove them wrong.

Of the 61 national parks in the United States, Grand Teton National Park in northwestern Wyoming is any mountain lover’s favorite. Our 6-day Grand Teton Photo Tour and Adventure Experience is the perfect opportunity for you to photograph this ethereal landscape, where jagged peaks tower more than a mile above Jackson Hole Valley and an incredible number of lakes mirror the stunning summits, the composition is constantly changing. The scenic Snake River, one of the most beautiful and pristine rivers in the country, provides great wildlife viewing for thirsty moose, deer and elk.

The park is open year round, offering the opportunity for spectacular photographs during all seasons. In the spring, the trees and the grass possess a vibrant green, the wildflowers are in bloom, the mountains retain some snow on their peaks and the wildlife is awake and abundant. Here you can photograph over 200 miles of trails and enjoy the serenity of this special place surrounded by sixty species of mammals, over 300 species of birds and a half-dozen game fish that call the Jackson Hole area home. This is truly an unforgettable experience for all the senses!

This adventure is designed not only to guide you to the most photogenic locations, carefully planned for the best light, but to aid you in mentally visualizing a scene before capturing the decisive moment. Our aim is to raise your awareness and spark your creativity so that you not only go home with images to be proud of, but use your new found skills to improve and expand your photographic technique in general. Apart from the technical aspect of learning your camera settings and capabilities, you will learn how to turn an ordinary image into an extraordinary image by using your own creativity.

In addition, you will become knowledgeable on how to survey the landscape, and utilize and approach your environment. Our time together will include individual and group discussions, inspiring ideas, and great fun. We cannot think of a better location to express your creativity than the stunning beauty of Wyoming and Grand Teton National Park!

UPCOMING WORKSHOPS

Grand teton   6 days, day 1 | jackson - grand teton.

We meet at 11 am in the lobby of our hotel, where we will discuss PWA’s “10 Guiding Principles of Photography” as well as our “THE ART OF SEEING” photographic technique. During a group lunch, we will have informal discussions on what our guests are trying to achieve in their photography, subject matters, styles, and techniques.

After lunch, we turn you loose upon the town of Jackson to explore for a couple of hours or to catch up on jet lag. We meet again in the afternoon for an evening tour of Grand Teton Park where we hope to find some wildlife and some dynamic, colorful skies.

In the evening we celebrate with our “Welcome Dinner” at our favorite Jackson restaurant. (D)

Day 2 | Antelope Flats - Oxbow Bend

Our first day is a very early one in order to reach our location, inside Teton National Park, before sunrise. The exact location this morning, as with most, will be determined by the weather, lighting and wildflower conditions. Antelope Flats will be a likely destination as it usually allows for both landscape and wildlife photo opportunities.

After spending time exploring this area we’ll have breakfast either back in Jackson or at a nearby restaurant within the Park. As the mid-day light is not typically great for landscapes each day we’ll probably take a break back at the hotel and review some of your images captured so far. Lunch back in Jackson unless we find ourselves out in the Park later than planned.

Since tomorrow we will be doing some action shooting, this afternoon will include a discussion on the different possible camera settings to either freeze the shot or to intentionally blur your images, a technique called panning. In the late afternoon, we’ll move out looking for landscape and wildlife opportunities for sunset. If the weather allows and we have a clear sky we can try our hand at some long exposure evening shots. Wildlife is usually more active early and late in the day so we’ll be on the look-out. (B)

Day 3 | Horse Round-up - Bridger-Teton National Forest

We’ll be up early again so we can be in position for the daily horse round-up at the Heart 6 Guest Ranch. Things happen quickly and your instructor will point out the best locations to stand for when the horses come stampeding by. For those interested, we’ll take off on an optional horseback trail ride into the Teton National Forest for a 4-5 hour outing. We’ll take it slow and our wrangler will accommodate us with stops as we see fit, or as our “backsides” see fit!

The destination here is the ridgeline overlooking the Buffalo Fork River. We’ll have views off in the distance of the Grand Tetons not visible without a horse ride or by backpacking. How much time we spend here will be up to us within the trail ride time frame. It would be hard to find a better view from which to enjoy our pack lunch which will be provided. Late afternoon is a great time to spot wildlife so we’ll take advantage of this while out exploring some of the popular locations for these sightings. If conditions permit we’ll set-up for sunset landscape images before returning to Jackson for dinner. (B) (L)

Day 4 | Moulton Barns - Jackson Hole Rodeo*

We’ll start the day photographing in the Teton Valley before making our way to the ridgeline on the east side of the Park at one of our favorite locations. This spot is in the Bridger-Teton National Forest. Access can be limited by road conditions. More will be known prior to your arrival. This area offers outstanding views of the entire range from a high viewpoint.

We’ll always be on the look-out for wildlife photo opportunities and the Antelope Flats which we pass through is a good location for spotting bison, elk and antelope. We’ll stop to photograph the Moulton Barns which always make for excellent images, with or without the Tetons in the background. Antelope Flats typically has spectacular displays of wildflowers this time of year so we’ll probably revisit this area a time or two… or more.

We return to our hotel for a quick break and then head over to the Jackson Hole Rodeo for some wonderful horse and rodeo photography. The rodeo begins at 8 PM so we’ll either grab a bite to eat at the show, or have dinner after in Jackson. (B)

*The Jackson Hole Rodeo runs from late May until the end of August.

Day 5 | Snake River Overlook - Jenny Lake Area

Today will be adjusted depending on what we’ve accomplished so far but to start with we’ll greet the sunrise at the Snake River Overlook. Moving into the Park we stop at Oxbow Bend watching for moose and perhaps grizzly bear that resides in the area. Have your long lens ready!

After breakfast we take a short hike to a spot your guide enjoys, a spot off the beaten path with wonderful views of the Cathedral Group and a spectacular ancient and lightning struck tree as a foreground. You’ll be sworn to secrecy! Returning to Jackson you’ll have time to wander the town and perhaps hang out at the Cowboy Bar.

Later in the afternoon, we depart for the Mill Iron Ranch for a western photo shoot and our “Farewell Dinner”. Here we will enjoy great fun and laughter as we discuss all the highlights of the trip. (B) (D)

Day 6 | Jackson

On our last day we sleep in, no sunrise, casual breakfast in Jackson followed by a trip up the Jackson Hole Mountain Resort Tram to take in the fantastic views from Rendezvous Peak. We then return to the hotel. Here we will have our final discussion, trade contact information, and bid you farewell.

We urge you to extend your stay in Jackson, or elsewhere in Wyoming, and make good use of everything you will learn on our Photo Workshop Adventure. (B)

(B) Breakfast, (L) Lunch, (D) Dinner, (E) Excursion

May all who come as guests... leave as friends ®

About Cathy & Gordon

Cathy and Gordon Illg are freelance photographers specializing in nature and wildlife photography. For more than twenty years they have been guiding tours to outstanding locations for both scenic and wildlife photography. Their work has appeared in nearly all the major nature publications and prominent travel magazines, as well as earning numerous awards in Nature’s Best International Photographic Competitions. In 2003, they earned second place in the Wildlife Photographer of the Year contest.

They are more than just skilled photographers and instructors; they are also Certified International Tour Managers, which ensures that traveling companions will have a great time, regardless of where they are traveling and what they are doing. The job is particularly fulfilling when it involves bringing guests face to face with the great outdoors and the creatures that call it home.

If you are already an accomplished photographer, they will get you to the good locations, at the right times, and set you free. However, if you want help, they will provide as much instruction as you want. On most tours instructional presentations are provided, and participants are always encouraged to bring a sample of their work for a helpful, friendly critique or just to share with the group.

Cathy and Gordon are calm, fun, and a pleasure to meet Tour was Awesome, everyone was so helpful and respectful. It was comforted to be guided around by Strabo tours and the airports.Trip was a 10 out of 10!

— A. & R. Morrison

Cathy & Gordon were great! they helped me in and out of the boats, with gear and were patient with me. All the meals were great. Local guides did their jobs well. First sighting of a Jaguar was the highlight. Your services were thorough as always. Kudo’s to Jacque for helping me get a new flight after airline untimely demise.

— Nancy Nelson

Based on your advice I had everything I needed for the trip. Greetings upon arrival were great as well as all transportation, group size was also good. Local guide, Cathy & Gordon worked well as a team and were very laid back which I very much appreciated. Variety of locations was also great. We got useful tips on camera care and shooting for the environment.

— J. Chase

Cathy & Gordon are great tour leaders because they are uniquely qualified in nature and in photography. I highly recommend taking one of their tours IF you want to learn a lot and get some fine images for your collection. They really spent time with those of us on the tour to be sure we got the images we wanted. In my opinion, you can’t lose by taking one of the Adventure tours.

— L. Poe

Your naturalist guide was excellent as were Cathy and Gordon. The lodges etc. were well selected and put us in the correct location. Most had excellent food, and transfers worked like clock work. Well Planned, well organized and well done!!!

Stunning images unveiled as Wildlife Photographer of the Year comes to Dorset in July

June 5, 2023

The prestigious exhibition showcasing the best photography globally is not to be missed

The Wildlife Photographer of the Year is a world-renowned exhibition that brings together some of the most incredible images of our natural world. On loan from The Natural History Museum in London, it is coming to Dorset Museum from 21 July to 29 October 2023 – giving local people and tourists to the county an opportunity to enjoy the exhibition away from the London crowds.

The exhibition features exceptional images which capture fascinating animal behaviour, spectacular species, and the breathtaking diversity of the natural world. Using photography’s unique emotive power to engage and inspire audiences, the images shine a light on stories and species around the world and encourage a future of advocating for the planet.

Wildlife Photographer of the Year is the most prestigious photography event of its kind, providing a global platform that showcases some of the best photography talent from around the world for over 55 years. Launched back in 1965, today the competition receives entries from over 90 countries all over the world, highlighting its enduring appeal. This year’s award-winning images are embarking on an international tour that will allow them to be seen by well over a million people, with one of those stops being Dorset Museum.

As well as showcasing the fantastic photographs, Dorset Museum has created an exciting events programme featuring family activities, talks, and a photography workshop for adults. Details of the programme will be published soon.

Dorset Museum will be offering schools the opportunity to take part in a workshop inspired by the Natural History Museum’s Explore: Urban Nature project.  This national initiatives looks to challenge students across the UK to help everyone better understand the nature around us.

Dorset Museum’s Get up Close to Nature workshops, aimed at Key Stage 2 pupils, look to introduce pupils to the Museum’s incredible collection during lively and engaging sessions.  Pupils will also get an opportunity to explore the Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition during their visit.

During the workshops, aspiring scientists will get up close to Dorset Museum’s incredible natural history collection and go away buzzing with knowledge and excitement about the natural world around them.

Dr Doug Gurr, Director of the Natural History Museum says,  ‘Captured by some of the best photography talent from around the world, the 100 photographs encourage curiosity, connection and wonder. These inspiring images convey human impact on the natural world in a way that words cannot – from the urgency of declining biodiversity to the inspiring bounce back of a protected species.’

Elizabeth Selby, Interim Director of Dorset Museum says, ‘ We are really delighted to be bringing the Wildlife Photographer of the Year exhibition to Dorset Museum this summer. It offers an opportunity to see the exhibition in a more intimate setting, away from the London crowds. These incredible photographs are not to be missed, and the exhibition offers something to inspire and delight visitors of all ages and interests. We can’t wait to welcome people to the Museum over the summer and early autumn months to see some of the best photography in the world.’

What a wonderful photographer you are. I am now 70 years old and I still treasure the photos you took of me as an aspiring actress. I was never famous nor successful as an actress so I turned to writing, coaching and producing and directing documentaries...but your photos were the only photos that captured my "campiness" your word for me. Love to you...thanks for the memories, your vision, your talent.

Mr. Langdon, What a treat to discover this treasure trove that is your website. I was directed here by your videos on Youtube detailing your working experiences with the legendary Donna Summer. "Thank you." dear Sir. Listening to your anecdotes regarding how you & Donna collaborated has been a highlight of my unfortunate quarantine. Watching your videos has REALLY brightened these dark days for me. Again, "Thank you !!!" Peace, Henry Hodges

Subject: 45th Reunion

I wanted to express my sincere appreciation to the Reunion Planning Committee.  It was a fantastic time.  It was great to see folks and to just catch up and enjoy one another’s company.

The evening was Wonderful!!!  I know that a lot of hard work went into making that happen and I felt bad that I had not expressed my appreciation sooner.  I am already looking forward to the next one.  I will do what I can to help with it.

Once again  GREAT JOB..  THANK YOU SO MUCH !!!!!
