Everything to Know about Castaway Cay, Disney Cruise Line’s Private Island in the Bahamas

There's plenty to do on disney's private island, and most of it is free..

Megan duBois

  • I’ve sailed with Disney Cruise Line nearly 10 times and Castaway Cay is my favorite port of call.
  • The best part about Castaway Cay is that everything you need for the day is available on the island so you won’t have to go back to the ship for anything.
  • Here are the best things to do on Castaway Cay along with what is and isn’t included when you visit Disney’s private island.

Storytelling takes center stage on Disney Cruise Line (DCL), and not just onboard its cruise ships. Disney’s original private island in the Bahamas, called Castaway Cay, is part of the enchantment as well. On most Disney cruises to the Bahamas and Caribbean , including the three- and four-night sailings of its newest ship, the Disney Wish , you’ll stop for a day at Castaway Cay. And on super special sailings throughout the year, you can spend two days at Castaway Cay during an itinerary.

Whether you’re traveling with kids or without, there’s plenty to do on Castaway Cay, including snorkeling in crystal clear water, swimming with stingrays, zipping down water slides, sipping cocktails on the beach, enjoying a lively BBQ, and even running a 5K. Here’s what is (and isn’t) included when you visit Castaway Cay on a family cruise with Disney Cruise Line, plus ideas about which activities are best for everyone in your group.

Editor’s note: In June 2024, Disney began sailing to a second private island destination, called Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point on the island of Eleuthera. Read all about Lookout Cay here .

ROMANCE AT SEA: 7 Best Cruise Lines for Couples (and Their Most Romantic Voyages)

Arriving at Castaway Cay, Disney’s Private Island

While Disney Cruise Line has five ships (and two more on the way), only one ship docks at Castaway Cay per day, so the small island is never overcrowded. Once the ship’s captain makes the all-ashore announcement, guests are permitted to disembark and head straight for Castaway Cay’s white sandy beaches. I try to be ready to get off the ship around 9:00 a.m., just after eating breakfast so I can grab a good spot on the beach with a chair that’s next to a colorful shady umbrella.

GALAXY QUEST: On Disney’s Newest Cruise Ship, Every Day Is ‘Star Wars Day at Sea’

Guests who are registered for a specific excursion or who plan to run the Castaway Cay 5K (a free 5K in which participants receive a bib and a medal, just like all other runDisney races ) are typically permitted to leave the ship first, starting at around 8:30 am. Otherwise, guests can get on and off the ship throughout the day at their leisure. I’ve participated in the Castaway Cay 5K multiple times, and it’s something I always look forward to, especially on cooler island days since most of the race course isn’t shaded.

What to Bring to Castaway Cay

While Disney will provide most of what you need at Castaway Cay—including beach towels and lounge chairs—I always bring a few things with me off the ship. The two most important items to carry with you when you disembark are your photo ID or passport, and your cabin key card.

You’ll also want to bring beach essentials like sunscreen, a beach bag, sunglasses, a hat, and a coverup. Fresh towels are provided on the gangway just after you set foot on the island, and there are towel returns all around the island so you don’t have to carry wet, sandy towels back to the ship with you.

Getting around Castaway Cay

Just beyond the pier is a complimentary tram that will take you to the family beach area. From there, I like to hop on the second tram that takes those 18 and over to the adults-only beach, Serenity Bay . You can also choose to walk to any of the destinations. The way is well marked, and Serenity Bay is about 20 minutes from the ship on foot. If you chose to rent bikes at Castaway Cay, you can check them out and ride around the island from beach to beach before checking them back in.

What’s Included at Castaway Cay

Every guest at Castaway Cay has complimentary access to the tram, towels, lounge chairs, hammocks, beachside BBQ, unlimited ice cream, and multiple beaches. The Pelican Plunge water park and Spring-a-Leak splash pad areas are also free to use. If you bring your own snorkel gear you can also enjoy the snorkeling lagoon off the family beach for free; otherwise, you’ll need to rent snorkels on the island to enjoy the lagoon. My favorite thing to do at Castaway Cay is get a bowl of soft serve ice cream and take it down to the beach with me to enjoy while watching the waves crash against the sand.

BIG NEWS: Everything We Know So far about DCL’s Next Private Island Destination

What’s Not Included at Castaway Cay

While your BBQ lunch, unlimited ice cream, and the optional Castaway 5K are all included with your visit to Castaway Cay, many of the extra activities cost an additional fee. For example, if you want to rent tubes, floats, banana boats, Aqua Trikes, or snorkel gear, or are looking for bicycle rentals , it will cost extra and can be charged to your cruise cabin.

All alcoholic drinks are also an additional cost because Disney does not offer a drink program like most other cruise lines. Adults looking to get pampered at the beach can rent a cabana at Serenity Bay or have a massage overlooking the ocean for an additional fee. Just note that cabanas do book up quickly, so your best bet to actually secure one is to stay in a concierge-level room or be fairly high up in Disney Cruise Line’s loyalty program called Castaway Club. Port adventures such as fishing, parasailing, and sea kayaking cost extra as well.

SUN AND SAND: 11 Best Family Beach Vacations in the U.S.

While there’s no wrong way to do Castaway Cay, it’s best to arrive at the island with a plan. Download the Disney Cruise Line Navigator App to see the schedule of activities, meals, and characters greetings on the island well before you arrive. I love seeing Mickey and his pals in their beach outfits, and every once in a while Captain Jack Sparrow can be spotted walking around the island.

Family Areas at Castaway Cay

Castaway family beach and snorkel lagoon.

Castaway Cay’s Family Beach is the best spot on the island for families with kids—and by “kids” I mean every age of child from toddlers to teenagers . There are plenty of lounge chairs spread out over two distinct parts of the sandy beach, most of which is shaded by colorful beach umbrellas. Arrive to the island early if you want your pick of the best beach chairs in an ideal location for your family.

TRAVEL WITH TEENS: 10 All-Inclusive Resorts Even Teenagers Will Love

Because the waves are small and gentle, Castaway Cay’s Family Beach is a good spot for those who aren’t strong swimmers. This beach is also where families can snorkel together to spot colorful sea creatures and a few well-placed “sunken treasures” that should delight Disney fans.

Pelican Plunge Water Park and Water Slides for Big Kids

Pelican Plunge is a fun play area located just off the beach. There are two water slides that can only be reached by wading into the sea to reach the platform, and both slides zip you back out into the ocean, so participants should be relatively strong swimmers. Pelican Plunge also has a giant dump bucket and water cannons to play with. Throughout the day, kids can be found in large groups playing here, but parents don’t need to worry because there are always lifeguards on duty in case anyone needs help.

Spring-a-Leak Splash Pad for Toddlers and Little Kids

Toddlers have their own splash pad at Castaway Cay. Called Spring-a-Leak, it’s a fun spot for little kids who don’t know how to swim yet to splash and play in an area that’s brimming with dripping pipes and water misters.

Snap a Photo with Disney Characters

There are opportunities to see (and snap a photo with) many of your favorite Disney characters all throughout Castaway Cay. Mickey and the gang can be spotted regularly, and oftentimes Captain Jack Sparrow will make an appearance at the adults-only beach area, Serenity Bay. If you time your return the ship just right, you may even catch a few costumed characters on the dock.

I always check the Disney Cruise Line Navigator App before getting off the ship to know who, when, and where characters are going to be meeting. If I do decide to see Mickey or his friends at the beach, I try to line up about 10 to 15 minutes before the set time so I’m near the front of the line.

Is There a Kids Club on Castaway Cay?

Adults looking to spend some time at Serenity Bay will be happy to know there is a children’s activity area on the island. Scuttle’s Cove is overseen by the same kids club counselors that staff your cruise ship. You do not need to make reservations for your children to visit Scuttle’s Cove, but your kids will need to already be registered at one of the youth clubs on the ship to participate.

BEYOND THE ORDINARY: 9 Family-Friendly Hotels with Kids Clubs That Go Above and Beyond

The kids club on Castaway Cay is geared to kids ages three to 12. Teens who want to spend time with their new friends can go to Teen Hideout on Castaway Cay, which is exclusively for teens up to age 17. Teenagers can also sign up for a half-day Castaway Cay shore excursion called the Wild Side Teen Adventure , a snorkel-cycle-speedboat adventure led by adult counselors.

Adult-Only Areas at Castaway Cay

The adults-only beach at Castaway Cay is called Serenity Bay, and it’s my favorite place to hang out on the island. To reach it, take the free tram from the pier to the Family Beach, then switch to a second tram to complete the trip. You can also walk to Serenity Bay beach on a well-marked paved path. It’s about five minutes by tram or 20 minutes on foot. The beach has chairs, hammocks, loungers, and umbrellas for you to pick from to sit and enjoy the view.

NO KIDS ALLOWED: 10 Best Adults-Only All-Inclusive Caribbean Resorts for Couples

There’s an adults-only bar with a large deck that overlooks the glittering waters at Serenity Bay. Here adult libations are strong and tropical, enhancing the beach’s laidback island vibe.

Dining Options at Castaway Cay

There are multiple dining options for families and adults at Castaway Cay, so there’s no need to go back to the ship for lunch.

Cookies BBQ and Cookies Too BBQ at the Family Beach

Just off the Family Beach at Castaway Cay is Cookies BBQ. A short distance away is Cookies Too BBQ. Here groups can dine together on everything from hot dogs and burgers to chicken and ribs. These two quick-service BBQ restaurants also serve cold sides like pasta, potato salad, and fresh fruit. These two eateries are for everyone on the island to enjoy.

DINNER AND A SHOW: These Are the Can’t-Miss Restaurants and Lounges on the Disney Wish

Both locations serve the same menu, but are located a short walk away from each other to cover the two large swaths of the Family Beach. Free unlimited soft serve ice cream stands are nearby and make for a perfect post-lunch snack.

Serenity BBQ in the Adults-Only Area

The adults-only beach also has its own lunch spot, Serenity BBQ. The menu is basically the same as at Cookies and Cookies Too, with ribs, chicken, and burgers. However, Serenity BBQ also serves up ribeye steaks, which is exclusive to the adults-only area of Castaway Cay. I prefer to eat here because its just steps from the beach, and it’s not overrun with kids.

No matter which beach BBQ you eat at, you’ll likely spot your dining room service team working there. Be sure to say hi, because the crew from the ship usually have great suggestions for things to do on Castaway Cay.

Bars at Castaway Cay

There are four bars located around the island, each of which has a similar menu. Three are located near the Family Beach area and one is situated in the adults-only area. The signature drink of Castaway Cay is the Konk Cooler, which is a mix of rum and tropical juices. Most of the drinks on the signature menus include rum, but if you prefer another spirit, you’re in luck because each bar is fully stocked. Just let the bartender know what you like.

How to Plan Your Day at Castaway Cay

While there’s no wrong way to do Castaway Cay, it’s best to arrive at the island with a plan. With the Disney Cruise Line Navigator App you’ll be able to see the schedule of activities, meals, and character greetings on the island well before you arrive.

If visiting Castaway Cay is a priority for you, be sure your cruise will visit there before you complete your booking. While most Disney Cruise Line vacations do make stops at Castaway Cay, some do not, and you don’t want to be disappointed after you’ve already booked your cruise.

After stepping foot onto the island numerous times, I can assure you that you won’t be disappointed by booking a cruise that makes a stop at Castaway Cay. Not only is the island beautiful, it’s got so much to do that you’ll need to make a return visit or two to be able to to do it all.

What kind of food can you find on Castaway Cay?

The dining experience is integral to any cruise, and it’s no different at Castaway Cay.

For those looking to maximize their Castaway Cay experience, Disney Cruise Line offers three convenient barbecue locations around the island. Cookies BBQ is best for Family Beach visitors, located near the shoreline, while you can find Cookies Too BBQ further along towards the tail end of the beach. For adults seeking a more relaxed and quiet atmosphere, Serenity Bay BBQ is the perfect option.

Everyone will enjoy all options: BBQ chicken, ribs, hot dogs, hamburgers, veggie burgers, fish, potato salad, couscous tabbouleh, corn on the cob, cheese bread, fruit, and soft serve ice cream . There is a similar menu at all three restaurants, although Serenity Bay BBQ sometimes offers upgraded items.

There is also the option of returning to the cruise ship and eating lunch in the regular dining rooms. While some people prefer this because the menu is more diverse, we recommend eating on Castaway Cay. Disney’s private island is an excellent place to dine; the atmosphere is fun, and the food is delicious!

Note: The cost of a Disney cruise includes meals aboard the ship as well as on Castaway Cay, Disney’s private island, so there’s no need to whip out your wallet. Additionally, breakfast is unavailable on Castaway Cay, so eat before leaving the ship!

Are there any bars on Castaway Cay, Disney’s private island?

There are four bars on Castaway Cay , Disney’s private island, where guests can enjoy delicious cocktails, frozen drinks, and cold beers. They include the Heads Up Bar near Castaway Ray’s Stingray Adventure, Sand Bar near Castaway Family Beach, Conched Out Bar near the Gazebo, and Castaway Air Bar at Serenity Bay for a relaxing tropical experience.

You can choose from various alcoholic and non-alcoholic beverages to suit your taste.

Favorites include the exotic Konk Kooler, a pina colada made with light and dark rum with coconut cream, and the Pelican Mule, a more potent version of the Moscow Mule featuring fresh fruit, pineapple vodka, and ginger beer. You can also order Castaway Crush, a non-alcoholic option served in a festive sipper resembling Olaf and Sven from Frozen.

It’s worth mentioning that alcoholic drinks, specialty non-alcoholic drinks, and bottled beverages are an extra charge. Free water and soda stations are available all over the island if you prefer these options or want a cheaper alternative.

Which Disney cruises go to Castaway Cay?

Which Disney cruise ships go to Castaway Cay?

With the new Disney Wish cruise ship, Disney Cruise Line now offers passengers another cruise ship with exciting Caribbean and Castaway Cay itineraries. Disney Wonder is the only Disney cruise ship in the fleet that does not currently stop at Castaway Cay, Disney’s private island.

Have Disney Cruise Questions But Don’t Want to Wait on Hold?

How long do you stay on Castaway Cay?

Castaway Cay guests usually spend 6 to 7 hours on the island during the day. They typically arrive around 8:30 to 9 AM and must board around 3:30 to 4 PM. This schedule could be affected by bad weather.

Which side of the ship faces Castaway Cay?

Disney Cruise ships usually dock with the stern (back) of the ship facing against the island. Because of how the pier is positioned, this means that rooms on the starboard (right) side of the ship are most likely to have a view of Castaway Cay .

DCL Castaway Cay From Ship

Castaway Cay is seen from the deck of a Disney Cruise Ship

Note this is how the ship usually docks, but it is not always the case — the ship may dock differently if needed — but a starboard stateroom is usually your best bet for having an island view.

Can you stay on Disney’s private island, Castaway Cay?

There are no hotels on Castaway Cay, so Disney Cruise Line guests cannot stay overnight . Instead, they sleep in their staterooms during the night and explore the island during the day.

A total of 140 Disney employees (what Disney refers to as its Cast Members) live in the backstage areas, which are not visible or accessible to guests. All overnight stays on the island are restricted to island employees who maintain its beauty and functionality. The majority of them are year-round residents of Castaway Cay.

Can you go to Castaway Cay without a cruise?

There is often a question about if Disney Cruise Line guests can vacation on Castaway Cay without taking a Disney cruise. The answer is no – Castaway Cay is reserved only for Disney Cruise Line guests that arrive via a Disney cruise .

The island is too small to accommodate more than one Disney cruise ship, so only one ship may dock at a time. As a result, Disney Cruise Line passengers can enjoy the lush landscape and turquoise waters of the island without worrying about overcrowding.

What’s the weather like at Disney’s Castaway Cay?

Located in the warm Bahamas and surrounded by a picturesque turquoise ocean, Castaway Cay is Disney’s own private island where guests can enjoy paradise. The island experiences pleasant temperatures all year round, ranging from lows of 66°F to highs of 90°F during the hottest months of July and August.

Average temperatures range from the mid to high 70s during winter months to the middle to high 80s in the summertime. Tropical storms, hurricanes , and rainfall are more frequent during the late summer and early fall periods, while ocean temperatures remain relatively constant year-round. On the breezy coasts, trade winds bring a welcome refreshment from the heat during mid-afternoon.

With its enchanting atmosphere and fantastic weather conditions, Disney’s Castaway Cay makes for an ideal Disney cruise port of call.

Are there bathrooms on Castaway Cay?

Disney’s private island has several bathrooms, which are easily accessible to guests. The island’s bathrooms are clean and pleasant, with modern fixtures that make it easy to freshen up after swimming or lounging on the beach. There are also a few outdoor showers around Castaway Cay so visitors can rinse off before returning to their ship.

Does Castaway Cay accept cash?

Disney’s goal is to make things as convenient for guests as possible on Castaway Cay. Since Disney Cruise Line operates the entire island, almost everything is already included in your cruise price. You’ll need to use your Key to the World Card (linked to your stateroom account) if you wish to pay for premium beverages, souvenirs, or excursions. You will only need cash if you mail a letter from the Castaway Cay post office.

How to get around Castaway Cay, Disney’s private island

The island of Castaway Cay offers a variety of transportation options for guests. When disembarking from the ship, passengers can take a complimentary tram to either the Castaway Family Beach or Serenity Bay Beach – an adult-only beach area on the far side of the island.

DCL Castaway Cay Courtesy Tram

A courtesy tram transports cruisers around Disney’s Castaway Cay

Additionally, visitors can stroll along the many walking trails lined with Disney features (instead of taking the tram) or rent bicycles to navigate the island.

The island also offers kayak and stand-up paddleboard rentals for exploring the lagoon or snorkeling around the reefs. Additionally, fishing and boating excursions are available around the waters of Castaway Cay for an extra fee.

How much do cabana rentals cost on Castaway Cay?

Prices are seasonal, but they are as follows for March thru September 2023:

  • Family Beach Cabana : A Family Beach Cabana costs $599 for six guests , with a maximum of 10 people.
  • Grand Family Beach Cabana : A Grand Family Beach Cabana costs $949 for ten guests , with a maximum of 16 people.
  • Serenity Bay Beach Cabana : A Serenity Beach Cabana costs $399 for four guests , with a maximum of 10 people.

Adding additional guests to a cabana is $50 per guest above the base price. For example, if you want to include eight guests in a Family Beach Cabana, it will cost an extra $100 (6 guests at $599 + plus two additional guests at $50 each = $699 total).

It’s no secret that Castaway Cay cabanas sell out quickly. If you plan to reserve one, make sure you reserve early! The price is subject to change, and Concierge guests and Castaway Club members receive the first chance to book.

To guarantee your spot, book early and consult with a Disney travel agent for the best results.

Is Castaway Cay a private island?

Disney’s Castaway Cay (/ˈkiː/), formerly Gorda Cay, is a private island near Great Abaco Island in the Bahamas. Disney owns the island and serves as an exclusive port for Disney Cruise Line ships.

What Is the history of Castaway Cay, Disney’s private island?

The island was first settled in 1783 and was originally known as Gorda Cay. Bootleggers once used the airstrip on Gorda (now Castaway Cay Airport) as a stopping point in the 1930s. During 1978-1983, Frank Barber seized the island and used its airstrip for smuggling drugs into the United States. Those days are long gone!

A rusty airplane bearing an image of Donald Duck sits partially buried in thick foliage

In 1997, Disney Cruise Line acquired a 99-year lease from the Bahamian government for Gorda Cay and renamed it Castaway Cay. Their goal was to make Castaway Cay a private island for Disney Cruise Line passengers and crew.

Disney invested roughly $25 million into 18 months of construction. The project involved transporting 50,000 truckloads of sand from the Atlantic Ocean to make alterations to the pier and its surrounding 1,700-foot channel. The improvements allowed Disney ships to dock directly on the island, eliminating the need to tender passengers ashore.

In 2015, Disney started holding a 5K race on Castaway Cay as part of their Walt Disney World Marathon series .

Several movies were filmed on Gorda Cay, including Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl and Splash , where Tom Hanks first meets Daryl Hannah’s character on the beach.

Today, Castaway Cay remains one of Disney’s most popular destinations, explaining why so many people travel to the Bahamas on Disney Cruise Line.

Do people live on Disney’s Castaway Cay?

Approximately 140 Disney Cast Members live on the island year-round. The people you encounter on Castaway Cay include landscapers, custodians, customer service representatives, and others who keep it running smoothly. There is also an official Bahamian post office on the island with postal workers.

How much does it cost to go to Castaway Cay?

Castaway Cay does not have a set price. The price you pay will depend on your particular cruise package. For example, cruises departing from the United States may include Castaway Cay as the destination or as an additional stop. In other words, a Disney cruise package already includes Castaway Cay as part of the price .

Regardless of the specific route taken, many factors influence the overall cost of a Disney cruise , such as duration, the type of stateroom you select, and the time of year you go .

Additionally, those who book their cruise through Disney travel agents may be eligible for discounts, special offers, and Disney onboard credit that can significantly reduce the overall cost associated with Castaway Cay.

Planning ahead and researching different Castaway Cay packages will help travelers experience an enjoyable and cost-effective vacation.

The Ultimate Castaway Cay Guide For Disney Cruisers

For many, Castaway Cay, Disney Cruise Line’s private island in the Bahamas, is the pièce de resistance of their pixie-dusted trip to the Caribbean – and with good reason. Between the crystalline lagoons teeming with sea life, sprawling family and adults-only beaches and all sorts of fun activities, there’s a lot to love.

So, slather on your sunscreen and bring your beach towel as we dive deep into everything Disney Castaway Cay has to offer, as well as some tips and tricks to help you really make a splash. Let’s jump right in!

Everything You Need to Know About Castaway Cay, Disney’s Private Island

From Royal Caribbean and Carnival to Norwegian and Virgin Voyages, a trip to a private island is often a cruising mainstay, especially for those setting sail for the Caribbean, and Disney Cruise Line is no exception.

Cruise ship in the water

Acquired by The Walt Disney Company in 1997 from the Bahamian government – the company signed a 99-year lease good through 2096 – Castaway Cay (pronounced Castaway ‘Key’) has long been a favorite of Disney cruisers.

Where Is Castaway Cay?

Originally known as Gorda Cay, Disney’s Castaway Cay is located just west of Great Abaco Island in the Bahamas. Sprawling 1,000 acres in size (though only 55 acres are actually developed), this enchanting island oasis is chockful of fun activities, as well as a fascinating history. In fact, before serving as a tropical escape for vacationers, Gorda Cay was a popular stop for both bootleggers and drug runners, a far cry from the island’s family-friendly atmosphere of today.

But, that’s not all. The island has also played host to mermaids and pirates – on the big screen, that is. Scenes from both Splash , starring Tom Hanks and Daryl Hannah as a wayward mermaid, and Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl were filmed on Castaway Cay. At one time, you could even see the Flying Dutchman ghost ship of Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man’s Chest fame, which was docked at the island from June 2006 to November 2010.

Which Disney Cruises Stop at Castaway Cay?

Disney Wish ship in dock

Sadly, only some Disney cruises go to Castaway Cay. After all, cruising from California or Alaska all the way to the Bahamas would be quite a lengthy voyage. However, most Disney Cruise Line itineraries heading to the Caribbean, Bermuda or, of course, the Bahamas do include a stop at Castaway Cay.

How Much Time Should You Spend on Castaway Cay?

It depends on how many of the island’s amenities you’d like to take advantage of, as well as if you opt to do one of Castaway Cay’s port adventures. In general, you can expect your Disney cruise ship to be docked at the island for between six to eight hours. This gives you plenty of time to hang out by the beach, go biking and/or snorkeling, do an excursion or two, and indulge in a delicious BBQ buffet. It’s all up to you!

How Busy Is Castaway Cay?

Only one Disney cruise ship docks at Castaway Cay at a time. This ensures that the island isn’t completely overrun with guests, turning your lazy day at the beach into an overcrowded, stressful and sandy mess.

Tents and foliage on island

Still, even with the island’s one-ship limit, Castaway Cay can feel pretty busy, especially if you’re hanging out on the Family Beach, which is on the part of the island closest to where the cruise ship docks. An early arrival will help you avoid a battle for a beach chair or, for a relaxing retreat away from the crowds, splurge on one of the Castaway Cay cabanas.

How’s the Weather on Castaway Cay?

Thanks to its location in the Bahamas, Castaway Cay enjoys balmy weather all year round, with an average temperature of 79 ° F. In the summer, temperatures top out around 90 ° F, while winters dip to the 60s to 80s. The water at Castaway Cay is similarly pleasant, ranging from as low as 68 ° F to as high as 86 ° F.

What’s Included and Not Included at Castaway Cay?

Similar to being onboard, guests have access to both complimentary amenities and for-purchase extras. These include:

Castaway Cay Freebies

Cruise ship in ocean

You don’t need to pay to have a good time at Castaway Cay. Disney’s private island has enough free activities and food to keep you fed and happy all day long. In addition to the tram that transports people around the island, guests also enjoy complimentary access to the Castaway Cay beaches (including things like beach towels, loungers and hammocks), kids club areas, Castaway Cay 5K, and the Pelican Plunge and Spring-a-Leak water play areas. However, while it won’t cost you anything to access the Snorkeling Lagoon, snorkel gear is extra.

Once you’ve worked up an appetite, it’s time for lunch – and you won’t have to pay a penny more. Castaway Cay cooks up a free beachside barbecue at three locations island-wide, including Cookie’s BBQ, Cookie’s Too BBQ and Serenity Bay BBQ. Be sure to save some room for another favorite Disney cruise freebie: bottomless soft-serve ice cream.

Additional Cost Extras at Castaway Cay

While you will find a fair few freebies at Castaway Cay, some of the island’s available activities do come with a cost. Castaway Cay excursions, including sea kayaking and parasailing, as well as rentals like bikes, tubes and cabanas. Adult-friendly upgrades like refreshing cocktails and luxurious massages also have an additional fee.

Do Cell Phones Work on Castaway Cay?

Cruise ship in water

Another thing that doesn’t come free on Castaway Cay? Cell phone signal! Although the Disney Cruise Line Navigator app does work on the island, if you want to call or text someone or need to search for something online, you’ll either need to pay for Disney’s pricey Wi-Fi plan, which can be spotty at times, depending on where you are, or splurge on steep roaming charges. Luckily, Castaway Cay does have a cell phone tower, so your mobile data should get plenty of bars.

How to Make the Most of Your Day at Castaway Cay

Think of Disney Castaway Cay as a Choose Your Own Beach Adventure kind of place. From where you decide to hang out to how you want to get around, there’s something for everyone. To maximize your time and keep your stress levels low, plan your attack ahead of time. Here are some things to keep in mind when figuring out your day.

Arriving at Castaway Cay

Castaway Cay was the first of the cruise line private islands where the ship could dock directly on the shore. As a result, since guests don’t need to ride a tender to the island, getting to and from the beach is about as easy as it gets.

Typically, the all-ashore announcement comes between 8 AM and 9 AM, with Castaway Cay 5K and shore excursion participants usually allowed to disembark first. After that, cruisers are free to get on and off the ship as much or as little as they’d like until it’s time to go.

Sandy beach with bushes

With a little bit of planning, you can even enjoy a sneak peek of Castaway Cay from the comfort of the ship. For an especially memorable morning, book an exterior stateroom or have breakfast on the starboard side of your Disney cruise ship. As this is the side of the boat that looks out over Castaway Cay, you’ll have sweeping views of the island as the ship comes in to dock and when leaving at the end of the day.

Getting Around Castaway Cay

You have a few different options for getting around Castaway Cay, and two of them won’t cost you a thing. A complimentary tram is available between the dock and the Castaway Family Beach, as well as another between the family area and Serenity Bay on the far side of the island. Or, if you’d rather get your steps in after all that soft serve, Serenity Bay is just a well-marked, 20-minute walk away.

Alternatively, if you don’t mind paying extra for a bit of two-wheeled adventure, you can also rent a bike to get around. Bike rentals cost $13 per hour on the island, with bicycles available in a variety of sizes, and include a helmet.

Things to Bring to Castaway Cay

Cruise ship in water

Honestly, since Disney provides most of the beach necessities like lounge chairs and towels, you don’t need to bring too many things for your day at Castaway Cay besides a few essentials. Along with your Key to the World Card and passport or photo ID, be sure to pack your beach bag with things like sunscreen (you can buy some in the shops on the island, but it’s expensive), sunglasses, a swimsuit coverup and a good book. You’ll also need some cash for Bahamian stamps from the post office if you want to mail a postcard and snag a covetable Castaway Cay postmark.

Things to Do at Castaway Cay

Although only 55 of Castaway Cay’s expansive 1,000 acres are developed, you’ll find no shortage of things to do , no matter what you’re interested in or who you’re traveling with. Let’s dive in and take a look.

Castaway Cay Excursions

It wouldn’t be a cruise without a selection of shore excursions. While occasionally overpriced, these port adventures are a great way to get away from the throngs of people and experience more than just Castaway Cay’s beaches and water park.

Castaway Cay excursions are available for a variety of activities and price points, from relatively affordable rentals like sea kayaks and paddle boats (both from $18) to more expensive experiences, including stingray and fishing adventures (from $36 and $164, respectively), jet boat tours ($85) and glass bottom boat rides ($59).

The best value for Castaway Cay port adventures is the Getaway Package. Priced at $46 for guests ages 10 and up, the Castaway Cay Getaway Package includes snorkeling gear and a float rental for the day, along with an hourlong bicycle rental.

Castaway Cay Activities for Cruisers of All Ages

Castaway Cay is a family-friendly paradise filled with all sorts of activities for guests of all ages, whether you’re traveling with toddlers or teens. The island’s family area is located just a short walk or even shorter tram ride from the dock, making it easy to get to and from the ship, a boon for families with little ones.

To keep your visit as hassle-free as possible, consider splurging on one of the Castaway Cay cabanas at the family beach. Starting out at $549 for a Family Beach Cabana and $899 for a Grand Family Beach Cabana, these tricked-out retreats come packed to the gills with refrigerated drinks, snacks, lounge chairs, a shower and extras like snorkel equipment, sand toys, tubes and bikes.

Here’s everything on offer for families at Castaway Cay.

Castaway Family Beach

With gentle waves, plenty of shaded seating and kid-centric activities like tube rentals and the Monstro Point dig site only a short walk away, Castaway Family Beach is the heart of the family-friendly action. Tons of loungers, hammocks and umbrellas are available to choose from. Just be sure to arrive early to stake your claim on the best spot, as this can be one of the busiest places at Castaway Cay.

Snorkeling Lagoon

Looking to take your aquatic adventures to the next level? Paddle past the Swimming Beach and out into the big blue world of Castaway Cay’s Snorkeling Lagoon. Snorkelers of all skill levels are welcome to explore this enchanting undersea realm, from the novice-level Discover Trail to the more experienced Explorer Trail.

Along the way, keep an eye out for splashes of underwater pixie dust, including Hidden Mickeys and submerged statues of Dumbo and Prince Eric from The Little Mermaid . Bring your own snorkel equipment for complimentary access to these sunken treasures, or rent your own for the day for $34.

Spring-a-Leak and Pelican Plunge

Castaway Cay also boasts its own aquatic play areas, both just a short walk from Castaway Family Beach. The Spring-a-Leak splash pad is made with the littlest cruisers in mind and features freshwater jets to cool off in.

Or, to get your heart pumping, splash into the saltwater in style from Pelican Plunge, Castaway Cay’s pint-sized floating water park named for the island’s resident pelicans. Although Pelican Plunge is easily reachable by wading out to the platform, its two water slides empty swimmers out into the lagoon. So, only relatively strong swimmers should take the plunge.

Sports Beach and In Da Shade Game Pavilion

Ready to dry off for a bit without putting the fun on hold? Make your way to the Sports Beach or the In Da Shade Game Pavilion. Perfect for a little friendly competition, these hands-on areas are stocked with fun activities the whole family will love.

Soak up some more Vitamin D and show your skill during tetherball or beach volleyball on the Sports Beach or step out of the sun for a bit with games like basketball, pool, foosball and table tennis at the In Da Shade Game Pavilion.

Castaway Cay 5K

Want to kick the competition up a notch (or, at the very least, burn off some calories from all that delicious cruise food you’ve been devouring)? Sign up for the Castaway Cay 5K. Available to guests 10 years and older at no additional charge (unless you opt to upgrade to the Premium Package before you set sail, which comes with a Disney Castaway Cay 5K hat, cinch sack and water bottle), this race past palm trees and sandy beaches is a great way to work out and see the sights all at once. All finishers are rewarded with an exclusive Castaway Cay 5K medal.

Disney Character Meet-and-Greets

What could be better than meeting some well-loved Disney characters in paradise? From Mickey Mouse and Minnie Mouse in their beach gear to everyone’s favorite pirate, Captain Jack Sparrow, Castaway Cay is a unique meet-and-greet spot worth waiting in line for. Just think of the photos! On the bright side, the lines tend to be on the short side, so you shouldn’t have to wait too long.

Scuttle’s Cove & Teen Hideout

Just like on Disney cruise ships, Castaway Cay offers dedicated areas and activities specifically for kids, tweens and teens. Best of all, as with the likes of the Oceaneer Club, access to these youth-focused spaces is completely free.

Scuttle’s Cove, located just next door to Monstro Point, is designed for kids ages 3 to 12 and features everything from supervised activities to its own aquatic play area. For the older kids, the Hide Out is a haven for 14 to 17-year-olds, while tweens ages 11 to 13 can enjoy their own special time at Pelican Plunge and the In Da Shade Game Pavilion.

Adult-Friendly Castaway Cay Activities

Hoping for some time away from the kids? Whether you’re traveling as a family or doing a Disney cruise for grown-ups , Castaway Cay offers an adult escape from the craziness of the family beach.

Serenity Bay

Castaway Cay doesn’t only offer dedicated areas just for kids and teens. It also touts a secluded, adults-only beach: Serenity Bay. Nestled on the other end of the island, close to a mile from Castaway Family Beach, Serenity Bay is an idyllic retreat complete with soft, white sand, swaying palm trees, umbrella-covered loungers, two-person hammocks and icy alcoholic beverages.

Since this adults-only beach is further from the dock, the competition for a good seat isn’t as stiff. However, things can still get pretty busy, and if you don’t claim a spot early, you could be left out of the shade. Or, for the ultimate in relaxation, snag a coveted Serenity Bay Cabana, which starts at $399.

Massage Cabanas

There’s nothing more relaxing than a soothing beachside massage. Offered in open-air cabanas overlooking the water, located right next to the Castaway Air Bar and Serenity Bay BBQ, this indulgent experience is the perfect way to unwind.

Castaway Cay Bars

After splashing around in the water, cool off even more with a cool drink from one of the Castaway Cay bars . Over at Serenity Bay, sidle on up to Castaway Air Bar or order a cocktail from one of the roving servers and let the alcohol come to you. Talk about relaxing!

But you don’t need to hang out at Serenity Bay to enjoy an adult beverage. Castaway Cay’s family area boasts a few different bars, which make for the ideal temporary escape from all the beach-crazy kiddos.

Dining at Castaway Cay

For some, one of the best meals of the entire cruise is the barbecue buffet on Castaway Cay. Available at Cookie’s BBQ and Cookie’s Too BBQ at the Castaway Family Beach and Serenity Bay BBQ on the other side of the island, this sun-sational picnic dishes up bottomless cookout classics like hot dogs, burgers, ribs, corn on the cob and potato salad. Adults can even tuck into freshly grilled ribeye steaks, exclusively at Serenity BBQ. Just remember to save some space for unlimited soft serve from one of the nearby stands.

Keep in mind that this beachy barbeque is only served for a limited time, running from 11:30 AM to 2:00 PM. Needless to say, make sure to eat breakfast before you get off the ship (this is a great day for room service) or risk being hangry before lunchtime rolls around. Additionally, crew members are prompt about taking down the food. So, if you miss the cut-off, you’ll need to walk back to the ship to scrounge something up.

Other Tips & Tricks for Your Day at Disney’s Castaway Cay

Ready to take on your day at Castaway Cay? Here are some simple hacks to help you make the most of your time.

Get Off the Ship Early (or Late) for a Better Chance at a Good Seat

Typically, folks tend to go to the island pretty early, as the competition for a lounge chair or hammock is fierce. So, if you don’t want to be left stranded without shade or a place to kick back and relax, try to be one of the first people off the ship. Alternatively, as many cruisers head back onboard around two hours before the ship’s departure time, waiting it out until later in the day can also be effective.

Mail a Postcard from the Post Office for a Unique Souvenir

Looking for an affordable yet unique souvenir? Send something from the Castaway Cay Post Office. Located near the dock, this outpost will mail postcards, letters and even messages in a bottle. Best of all, it will even get an extra-special Castaway Cay postmark. Just remember to bring some cash for Bahamian stamps, as your Key to the World Card won’t be accepted.

Save Money by Booking Port Adventures or Rentals Ahead of Time

When it comes to Castaway Cay excursions, it often pays to reserve things in advance. For example, the Castaway Cay Getaway Package – which includes a bike, tube and snorkel gear – is a great deal for active cruisers hoping to explore the island by both land and sea.

However, this rental package can only be booked online prior to sailing away or onboard the ship before reaching Castaway Cay. Should you choose to wait until you get to the island, you’ll wind up paying $20 to book the exact same rental equipment individually.

Don’t Forget Your Camera

Castaway Cay is jam-packed with photo opportunities, whether character meet-and-greets, family pictures in front of Mount Rustmore (Mickey, Pluto, Donald and Goofy painted on big buoys) or requisite beach selfies. Going snorkeling? Bring an underwater camera (or live on the edge and use a waterproof phone pouch) to snap shots of the Snorkeling Lagoon’s undersea statuary.

Well, Disney cruisers, that concludes our deep dive into all things Castaway Cay. Have you been to Disney’s private island before? What is your favorite thing to do at Castaway Cay? Lighthouse Point Disney Cruise Line Private Island: Opening Date & First Sailings, Details

disney island cruise

Disney Cruise Line’s new private island destination is Lighthouse Point, located on Eleuthera in the Bahamas. This post covers everything we know about DCL’s counterpart to Castaway Cay, including the opening date, when preview & inaugural sailings to Lighthouse Point will happen, plus full details & concept art. ( Updated November 4, 2023 .)

Created in close collaboration with local artists and advisors, Disney Cruise Line’s vibrant island retreat at Lighthouse Point will be a unique celebration of Bahamian culture brought to life with the quality and service of a Disney vacation.

Keep reading to discover all the latest details about this relaxing beach escape designed with families in mind, infused with the color and energy of Bahamian artistry, and developed with a commitment to conservation at its core.

When Disney Cruise Line guests arrive at Lighthouse Point, they’ll be greeted by distinctive, sweeping architecture in bright, saturated hues. This style was inspired by nature and created in partnership between Walt Disney Imagineering and local artists.

The curvilinear buildings will at first appear as Bahamian shells scattered along the shoreline. Upon closer inspection, guests will discover artistic expressions of the native flora and fauna of The Bahamas and the pageantry and history of Junkanoo parades. Throughout the destination, references to playful folklore characters will evoke the warmth and charm of the local culture.

Respect for the environment is at the heart of the design at Lighthouse Point. At least 90 percent of the destination’s electricity needs will be met by an onsite solar array, the pier was designed to avoid the need for dredging and elevated walkways will help limit impact on the landscape.

disney island cruise

Let’s start with a first look at the arrival point, Mabrika Cove, with brand-new concept art released by Disney Cruise Line in November 2023.

“Mabrika” means “welcome” in Taino, the language of the Lucayans, who are considered the indigenous people of The Bahamas. While the language is no longer used, a few words remain – one of them being “Mabrika.” At this colorful arrival point, guests will immediately experience the warmth of Bahamian culture.

The Goombay Cultural Center (pictured below) will embody the essence of “Junkanoo,” a Bahamian festival filled with joyous music and vibrant parades that will come to life in many ways across Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point. Goombay is one of the traditional music styles of The Bahamas, involving singing, dancing and drumming.

The brilliantly colored cultural pavilion and its Junkanoo-inspired arch will invite guests to embrace the traditions of The Bahamas, along with the sights, sounds and spirit of the country’s signature festival.

disney island cruise

There will be plenty of family entertainment in store at Triton’s Trumpet Stage. And fun fact: The gazebo’s name is inspired by one of the stunning natural wonders found among the Bahamian beaches – a large, spiral seashell commonly called “Triton’s Trumpet.” And for you Disney fans, if Triton sounds familiar, you might recognize it as the name of the mighty king from the beloved Disney animated classic “The Little Mermaid.”

Of course, we must mention the shopping opportunities! Treasures of Eleuthera will be the retail shop featuring locally made gifts and artisan crafts. What I really love is how the shop will spotlight Bahamian artists through an array of unique items that families will be able to bring home with them as a special keepsake.

And now, the question you might have been asking … is there going to be an adults-only space on the island? The answer is yes! I’m delighted to share that Serenity Bay will be a relaxing retreat exclusively for adults 18 years of age and older. For those of you who have sailed with Disney Cruise Line before, you might recognize Serenity Bay as a must-visit location on Disney Castaway Cay! At Disney Lookout Cay, Serenity Bay will feature a tranquil beach experience with a dining area and private cabanas available for reservation.

disney island cruise

Disney Cruise Line’s visitors to Lighthouse Point will have the opportunity to be surrounded by the wonders of nature and get a glimpse into the efforts taking place to conserve wildlife and their unique island habitats.

At Lighthouse Point, families will enjoy a day of fun in the sun as they relax on pristine beaches, embark on active adventures and discover authentic Bahamian storytelling alongside favorite Disney characters. As with DCL’s other private island, Castaway Cay, Lighthouse Point will offer activities and areas for every age group.

Families can relax and play along white sandy beaches and turquoise waters at the expansive family beach on the east side of the Lighthouse Point, which will be centrally located near market-style dining, recreation and other amenities.

A Bahamian art and culture pavilion featuring special programs and local artists will provide DCL visitors to Lighthouse Point opportunities to learn and celebrate the traditions and natural beauty of The Bahamas.

disney island cruise

Lighthouse Point’s interactive family water play area will include two slides, water drums, fountains and more. This play area will also feature a dedicated space for toddlers.

North of the family area will be Lighthouse Point’s adult beach. This stretch of sun-drenched serenity will offer Disney Cruise Line guests a dedicated dining area for convenient access to food and drinks throughout the day, plus six private cabanas available by reservation.

disney island cruise

Children ages 3 to 12 will splash and play at a kids’ club under the care of Disney Cruise Line counselors. The kids’ club will offer a splash pad inspired by favorite undersea creatures from “The Little Mermaid,” plenty of shade, as well as a dedicated dining area.

Set away from the activity of the main family area, a peaceful beach along Lighthouse Point’s southwestern shore will be lined with 20 premium family cabanas available for DCL guests to rent, including four double cabanas that accommodate larger groups and offer massage services.

disney island cruise

Additional recreational activities will be available for guests of all ages, including a covered gaming pavilion, volleyball court, gaga ball pit, watercraft and bicycle rentals, nature trails for hiking and biking, and more. New Port Adventures developed in partnership with local tour operators will take guests beyond Lighthouse Point to explore the rich culture and breathtaking beauty of Eleuthera.

Lighthouse Point is being thoughtfully designed to provide a hassle-free experience for families, including complimentary beach essentials (towels, chairs and umbrellas and lunch), and tram transportation.

First Sailings to Lighthouse Point Private Island

disney island cruise

In June 2024, Disney Cruise Line will debut its new private island destination, Lighthouse Point, on Eleuthera in the Bahamas. Cruises aboard the Disney Magic from Fort Lauderdale, Florida, will visit this vibrant beach retreat designed with families in mind, infused with the color and energy of Bahamian artistry, and developed with sustainability and conservation at its core.

A three-night preview cruise on the Disney Magic from Fort Lauderdale is scheduled for June 6, 2024 and will feature a sneak peek of Lighthouse Point with limited access to some areas. Throughout Summer 2024, Lighthouse Point will be a featured stop on select three-, four- and five-night sailings to The Bahamas and Caribbean on the Disney Magic out of Fort Lauderdale. These South Florida-based itineraries will vary stops between Lighthouse Point and Castaway Cay, with five special sailings including both Disney Cruise Line island destinations.

A 7-night inaugural cruise to Lighthouse Point aboard the Disney Fantasy from Port Canaveral, Florida will occur on June 8, 2024. This ultimate Disney Cruise Line island destination itinerary will feature not one, but two stops at Lighthouse Point … and that’s not all! One day of sun-drenched serenity at Castaway Cay also awaits your family on this once-in-a-lifetime sailing.

One special 10-night Southern Caribbean sailing aboard the Disney Fantasy will give your family another opportunity to visit Lighthouse Point with additional visits to the islands of Antigua, St. Lucia, Dominica, Tortola and Castaway Cay.

disney island cruise

In terms of commentary, I don’t have a lot to add. The concept art makes this look really nice, like a cross between Castaway Cay and Aulani. We love both Castaway Cay and Aulani, and I’m sure this will be awesome. Having the private island lean more towards authenticity is great, even if I do enjoy the Imagineered vibe of Castaway Cay. (That reminds me a bit of Typhoon Lagoon, whereas I suspect this will not.)

All in all, we expect Lighthouse Point to be a great destination for Disney Cruise Line guests. Based on the description, it sounds like DCL and Imagineering have learned lessons from what worked and didn’t with Castaway Cay, and this is essentially the next generation of that. It appears that practical improvements have been made, giving Lighthouse Point a greater sense of fun and luxuriousness, along with the increased emphasis on authenticity. That’s just my impression based on the concept art and press release, though.

disney island cruise

I stopped paying close attention to the Lighthouse Point saga a while ago, but have nevertheless been expecting an update on this for the last couple of years . You might recall that ex-Imagineer Joe Rohde was the face of the Lighthouse Point project when it was first announced almost 4 years ago.

Renowned for his culturally-respectful work on Disney’s Animal Kingdom, Aulani Resort & Spa in Hawaii, Villages Natures in Paris, and a variety of other independent projects, Joe Rohde was unquestionably Disney’s best ambassador when it comes to conservation and projects that highlight cultures.

When Lighthouse Point was announced, Joe Rohde shared how he was embarking on an in-depth cultural tour of the Bahamas meeting with local artists and cultural experts. He explored cultural sites across New Providence and Eleuthera, from Junkanoo shacks to noted art galleries, gathering samples, hearing from locals, and determining the best approach for telling their stories.

If anyone could “sell” a project like this to conservation groups or those otherwise opposed or on the fence, Joe Rohde is that person. He has an effortless way of passionately speaking about pretty much anything, doing so in an earnest and engaging way. He comes across as genuine and easy to trust. Unlike some stuffed shirt, if he says Disney will focus on culture and conservation, you believe him. Or at least, you want to believe him .

disney island cruise

At that time, Lighthouse Point was a controversial project that was still awaiting an Environmental Impact Assessment and Environmental Management Plan, along with approval by the Government of The Bahamas and public consultation. There was a lot of backlash pre-pandemic, but the plan was to open Lighthouse Point by last year or this year. Obviously, construction delays were an inevitability with the border closures and cruise industry essentially pausing for over a year.

There was also Joe Rohde’s “retirement” in late 2020. At that point, all of the design work and assessments would’ve been completed, but it seemed like Rohde was still important as the face of the project–just as he had been with Aulani until (and even after) its opening. That along with everything else led us to wonder whether Disney Cruise Line had abandoned Lighthouse Point.

Disney Cruise Line aggressively proceeding with its fleet expansion (not to mention the surprise acquisition of another partially-completed ship) made it likely that Lighthouse Point was going forward. Still, we hadn’t heard anything about it and were surprised when no updates were offered at the most recent D23 Expo.

disney island cruise

Ultimately, Lighthouse Point looks like it’ll be a fantastic destination for Disney Cruise Line guests. The environmental issues it poses do give me pause, and I hope Disney wasn’t just paying face to these issues in order to secure approval. While the company’s track record with Aulani is good, this is a bit different in nature. Hopefully Disney is sincere in its statements that Lighthouse Point will be minimally disruptive to the natural environment and that the island destination will be used in an environmentally-responsible way.

Again, Lighthouse Point will open for Disney Cruise Line guests on select sailings in summer 2024. Stay tuned for more details about inaugural itineraries, signature entertainment, dining, retail and excursions, and additional information.

Your Thoughts

What do you think of the Lighthouse Point? Does this new private island destination look better or worse than Castaway Cay? Did Joe Rohde’s involvement make this more interesting to you? Do you agree or disagree with our assessment? Any questions? Hearing feedback about your experiences is both interesting to us and helpful to other readers, so please share your thoughts below in the comments!

I have tremendous respect for Joe Rohde and enjoy everything he’s designed so I’m sure this will be wonderful—but I love Castaway Cay (and it’s heavy Imagineering) so much that I am just not excited about it’s alternative. I assume we will eventually get there on an itinerary that visits both islands, but in my heart of hearts, I’d rather double dip at CC.

The only thing that really surprised me was that they didn’t build way more cabanas. I think at minimum, even if they ran out of coastline, they could have gotten away with a second row “obstructed view” that cost slightly less and still printed money on them. I guess I should be congratulating Disney on the decision not to sacrifice more shoreline for many so they can squeeze out an extra (estimated) $3000/cabana per week.

' src=

I’m still dreaming they’ll build an Aulani-type resort in the Caribbean for us non-cruisers!

' src=

I have mixed thoughts on this, which probably reflect my overall ambivalence about Caribbean cruising in general. Part of me has an aversion to the concept of “traveling” to a place that’s innately fairly artificial. On future sailings that will no doubt visit both private islands, the idea of a guest saying they “went to the Bahamas” seems somewhat dubious since they will have never left the Disney bubble.

On the other hand, I fully understand that the areas around most “real” Caribbean cruise ports are often crudely commercial and don’t reflect the people, culture, beauty, or history of those islands (imagine a tour of US national parks where your only activity is stopping to shop, eat, and ride aerial tramways in gateway towns like Estes Park, Gatlinburg, or Springdale). And stepping ashore with thousands of other cruisers doesn’t exactly enhance the ambience or authenticity. Thinking about Nassau specifically, the cruise port-adjacent zone is tacky/industrial, whereas excursions to Atlantis or Blue Lagoon island are basically just upcharged versions of Castaway Cay.

Now of course I get the irony of griping about artifice on a Disney blog site, and I did enjoy most aspects of my one and only voyage on DCL. But leaning into suspended disbelief within the spectacularly imaginineered pretenses of the theme parks just feels different to me than sailing hundreds of miles to a place where you’re really not “there.”

' src=

What I don’t understand is at Lighthouse Point you can rent a Cabana are they letting people stay on the island? I can’t imagine renting for the few hours you get to stay like at Castaway.

' src=

We are planning to sail in July 24 so maybe we will get lucky and get to go to Lighthouse Point. It looks really relaxing

' src=

Is the plan for DCL to replace Castaway Cay entirely with Lighthouse Point? If not, has there been talk about certain sailings including Lighthouse in lieu of or in addition to Castaway?

' src=

They need the second private island with the growing fleet. I have no clue if certain itineraries will include both stops, but I’m guessing so at some point (albeit maybe not in 2024). That would be a popular itinerary for DCL diehards.

' src=

We are taking the plunge and giving DCL a try this coming December, so this won’t be available yet. Oh well. It looks cool, and I’ll be curious to hear about it. I had no idea they were even close to completing this.

The most obvious thing to do on Disney’s Castaway Cay is to enjoy one of the beaches. There are plenty of sun loungers and umbrellas for everyone.

You don’t need to spend an arm and a leg to have a great time, the Castaway beaches are beautiful, and a great way to unwind and relax.

There are two main beaches on Disney’s Castaway Cay: Castaway Cay Family Beach and Castaway Serenity Bay.

The most popular beach is the Castaway Cay Family Beach .

This is the first beach that you will see when you either take the tram or walk from the ship.

disney island cruise

The island is small so you will not have very far to walk. If you prefer, there is a tram. Usually, the wait for the tram is not too long.

Disney’s Castaway Cay Family Beach is for everyone. You aren’t exactly going to be on your own out there, but the island is large enough so that you will not feel as though you are overcrowded.

If you are sailing on the Disney Wonder or the Magic, these ships are much smaller than the Fantasy and Dream. Therefore you are going to have a lot fewer people on the beach to share with.

The Disney Wish has the same amount of guests as the Fantasy and the Dream.

Castaway Cay Serenity Bay is the adult beach. Usually, this is quieter.

Of course, you don’t have children on the beach as this is strictly for the over-18s.

However, we have been on the beach sometimes when it seems to be just as busy as the Family Beach.

It really does depend upon the composition of your particular Disney cruise. Some just don’t have as many kids on board.

The ocean at Castaway Cay is mostly shallow and ideal for simply relaxing and enjoying gentle swimming. I am 5′ 4″ and can usually stand up in the water near the shore on the Family Beach.

One thing that you really might not expect at Castaway Cay is that the level of the ocean floor changes as the day goes on.

The sand on the bottom really does move! So always be aware that the depth can change.

There are plenty of lifeguards and there is a very clearly designated area where you are not supposed to go past. It feels very safe.

It also hurts your feet!

The sand is full of small shells and stones which can be really painful on the feet.

disney island cruise

Particularly for the kids.

At the edge of the Family Beach is a part of the beach that is reserved for Concierge Guests only.

This, of course, is the best beach area as there are very few guests on it, particularly if you are sailing on one of the Disney classic ships the Wonder or Magic.

Pelican Plunge

A popular attraction at the Family Beach on Castaway Cay is Pelican Plunge . This is a 2,400 floating platform out a short distance from the shore in a sectioned-off area of the ocean.

There are two water slides to enjoy. Lines do form, so if you want to go to Pelican Plunge it is best to do it as soon as you arrive on Castaway Cay.

You can read all about Castaway Cay Pelican Plunge here

You can enjoy all the beaches on Disney Castaway Cay for free. However, if you want to rent a float or inner tube this is a lot of fun.

Castaway Cay float or inner tube rental costs $13 for the whole day.

If you are sailing on a Castaway Cay Double Dip the price is $16 for 2 days. A double-dip is a Disney Cruise with 2 stops at Castaway Cay.

There really isn’t a need to rent one for everyone if you want to cut down on costs. We usually get one between the two of us.

castaway cay what to pack

What to Pack in Your Castaway Cay Bag!

The inner tube is the most popular. It isn’t exactly dignified getting on and off this! However, once you master the art of just throwing yourself onto it you will be fine!

The blue float is ok but we all prefer the inner tube. If you change your mind about which one you want, you can always swap it for the other kind.

If you are feeling energetic the Disney Castaway Cay 5K is one of the most popular activities. The Castaway Cay 5K is free to enter and you even get a medal when you finish!

The emphasis is on fun rather than the race for the finish. Anyone can participate provided they are at least 10 years old. It is a lot of fun to take part in this informal Disney Castaway Cay 5K.

You no longer need to register to participate in the Castaway Cay 5K.

You can start the route at any time that you want. However, you are probably best to do this in the early morning before the heat of the day builds.

So, if you’re a runner, or even if you’re not, the Castaway Cay 5k is a great way to go sightseeing and get your legs moving. You’ll come away from this free run with more than a medal!

The Disney Castaway Cay 5K race really is meant to be fun. There are water stations along the route. Make sure that you take advantage of them and stay hydrated. Castaway Cay can get pretty hot, even at that time of the morning.

The 5K really is one of the most popular of the Disney Castaway Cay Excursions and Activities.

How much does the Castaway Cay 5K cost? It’s completely free! What’s not to like?

If you’re looking for an early morning activity, and a great way to go sightseeing, renting a bike from the Castaway Cay Bike rental place is a great idea.

You can rent a bicycle on Castaway Cay for $13 an hour. A 2-day rental is $16.

They really are pretty flexible with this hour limit though – no one is actually watching the clock to make you return the bike on time.

There are a number of different-size bikes to choose from.

You can also rent a bike with a baby seat.

All riders under the age of 18 have to wear a helmet. It is optional but recommended for adults.

There are 1.5 miles of bike trails on Castaway Cay.

All of the trails are paved and it is very easy getting around the island. It is a lot of fun to explore places that you wouldn’t usually see.

There are a couple of lookout towers along the way. It is the same track that the 5K uses.

The sun can be pretty strong in Castaway Cay so always wear sunscreen. Also, it may be better to have your bike ride early in the morning. It can get pretty hot!

Disney Dream at Castaway Cay

You will find a good choice of boat rentals on the beach close to the ship. Prices vary for these. Here are the prices for 30 minutes of rental time:

Sea Kayak 1 seater $18 2 seater $23

Hobie Cat $32

Aqua Trike $26

Paddle Boat 2 seater $16 4 seater $21

Fun Kat $31

Stand-up Paddle Board $19

Chiliboats Waterbikes $29 for ages 14 and up

For the Hobie Kat, you do need to have previous sailing experience.

Just be careful and be aware that the sun can get pretty hot out there! Be sure to always use sunscreen and wear a hat.

You get some amazing views of the ship out on the water so be ready with your phone or camera to take some pictures.

The best time of day to rent a boat at the Castaway Cay is early in the morning, or in the evening, when the beaches are less busy, and the sun isn’t as strong.

Snorkeling is very popular on Castaway Cay. You can bring your own equipment.

However, snorkel equipment is available to rent on Castaway Cay for $34 for adults and $18 for ages 5 to 9.

A Castaway Cay Double Dip 2-day rental is $45 for adults and $23 for children.

This is the price for an all-day snorkel rental. It includes a snorkel, mask, fins, and snorkel vest.

disney island cruise

Consider going on your snorkeling adventure in the morning, to avoid the harsh sun, and experience the stillest water.

You can find out more details at Castaway Cay Snorkeling .

disney island cruise

If you are looking for a thrilling banana boat ride this is available for $45. You do have to be at least 8 years old to participate.

It promises to be a high-speed ride along the Bahamas, allowing you both the thrill and serenity of the Caribbean.

This glass-bottom boat voyage is available for all ages.

The cost is $59 for adults and $39 for ages 3 to 9 and $39 for 0 to 2.

The voyage takes about an hour.

In this hour, you will see the beautiful wildlife surrounding the boat, in its natural habitat. Plus, the kids will love it too!

The Pelican View

The Castaway Getaway Package lets you bundle some rentals, this will let you save money, and avoids the hassle of bringing in your own equipment.

This includes snorkel equipment, a float or tube rental, and a bike rental. The cost is $46 for ages 10 and up. There is a discount for children aged 5 to 9 as the price is only $26.

There is a Castaway Cay Double Dip 2-day price of $60 for adults and $33 for children.

If you know you are going to need all 3 of these rentals it will save you money. However, you must book this onboard the Disney ships as it is not available on Castaway Cay once you are there.

Castaway Ray’s Stingray Adventure

Castaway Cay Stingray

This activity is great for nature lovers who love being in the water, and aren’t afraid of a little adventure.

This is a very popular excursion. It does get booked up so be sure to book online as soon as you can. There is a special Stingray area for this excursion.

Guests learn about these fascinating creatures and then get the chance to spend some time in the water snorkeling with them.

The Castaway Ray Stingray Adventure lasts about an hour and costs $56 for adults and $45 for children aged 5 to 9.

You do have to be accompanied by an adult if you are under 17.

You can see more detail about this Disney Castaway Cay excursion at

You can also have a Getaway Package and Snorkel with the Stingrays activity for $66 for adults and $51 for children aged 5 to 9.

There is a special excursion for teens available on Castaway Cay. Teens must be at least 14 to participate. This experience includes snorkeling, biking, and a high-speed boat ride.

The excursion starts with snorkeling in the Snorkel Lagoon. Then you will ride around the island on a bike.

For most teens, the highlight of this Disney Castaway Cay excursion is the high-speed boat ride.

The cost of this Castaway Cay activity is $54.

This activity is suspended right now.

This kayak and walking tour is only available to those aged 10 and up. The cost is $73 and the excursion lasts about 3 hours.

The first part of the Castaway Cay excursion is the guided walk which takes around 45 minutes.

Then you will board a double kayak to explore the tidal zones and mangroves around Disney’s private island. You finish your Disney Castaway Cay excursion with some time on a private beach.

This 3-hour Castaway Cay activity costs $73 for ages 10 and up.

This is a great activity for those with moderate levels of fitness and allows you to see a large amount of the island.

If you want an adventurous Disney Castaway Cay excursion this could be the one for you. Guests start on a Zodiac Rigid Hull inflatable and take a fast ride out to a deserted sandbar.

You get away from the crowds and can sunbathe or swim as you want. Guests 21 and older can enjoy a sampling of Bahamian rum.

This Castaway Cay port excursion is for ages 8 to 70. The cost is $77 per person.

This Castaway Cay package lets you bundle up various options so that you can save some money. It combines snorkel equipment rental, bike rental a float or inner tube, and the Castaway Ray Stingray Adventure.

The cost for this Castaway Cay adventure is $88 for ages 10 and up and $67 for children aged 5 to 9.

This is a great option for families who plan on getting around the island and want some adventure to boot!

This excursion is for adults only. The age range specified is 18 to 70 and the cost is $89.

If you enjoy snorkeling and want something more challenging then this could be the Castaway Cay excursion for you. You travel to a snorkel site on a Zodiac Rigid Hull Inflatable. The snorkel site is between 6 to 15 feet deep.

You will also get a sample of Bahamian rum after the snorkeling is finished – not good to combine the two activities!

You will most likely see more fish than you will closer to the shore.

This is the only way to rent a jet ski on Castaway Cay. It is a timed, guided excursion. The cost for 1 hour is $183 and you need to be at least 18 years old to drive a Wave Runner. Passengers must be 8 and up.

The guide will take you out to open waters before returning to Boat Beach after about 1 hour. Guests must weigh less than 375 pounds.

This Castaway Cay excursion will give you a very different view of Disney’s private island!

Parasailing is available for anyone aged 8 and up weighing between 90 and 375 pounds. Single rides are not guaranteed and you may be required to ride tandem, depending upon the weather conditions.

Your actual air time will last about 5 to 7 minutes. You will reach heights of between 600 to 800 feet.

This is certainly a very thrilling experience. The cost is one of the more expensive excursions on Castaway Cay. It is $129 for all ages 8 and up.

If you’re looking for an adrenaline kick, and a view like no other, this is a great way to try parasailing and make unforgettable memories.

This excursion also uses a Zodiac to take guests out into a snorkeling site. All equipment is included and you will spend about 90 minutes of actual snorkeling time. There is a snack and beverage provided on your way back to Castaway Cay.

The cost of this Castaway Cay Snorkelling Adventure is $122 for adults and $109 for ages 6 to 9.

There is an adult-only departure for $89.

If fishing is your thing you may want to think about this Castaway Cay excursion. Take a 2 person boat out with a guide.

All equipment is included. This is a catch-and-release fishing excursion. The cost is $259 for ages 8 and up.

This is a perfect activity for those who love to fish and a great way to share the love of fishing with the whole family!

With this excursion, you fish in the backwaters of Castaway Cay. The cost is $84 for this 3-hour excursion. You need to be at least 8 to participate.

If you enjoy fishing but are looking for something a little different, consider the Abaco Back Country Fishing Adventure which will add a sense of adventure to your fishing trip!

This is for anyone aged 8 and up who wants to ride a Wave Runner. This is for two people and you must share your Wave, Runner.

You do have to be 18 to drive, but anyone aged 8 and up can be a passenger. The cost is $183.

So if you’re looking for a thrill, and love being out in the water, this is the perfect activity for you and your loved ones. Just make sure you have an even number in your group.

If you prefer fly fishing you can take this Castaway Cay excursion. At $243 for anyone aged 8 to 70, this is the most expensive of all of the Castaway Cay port adventures.

You will be taken to a local flats fishing area. You may even catch a barracuda. As with all of the Disney Castaway Cay fishing experiences, all equipment is provided and it is catch and release.

Although on the expensive side, this is a great activity for fishing fanatics. The only thing you need is yourself, and some confidence!

Really sorry to hear that! I hope that you get the chance to visit again one day.

Disney is betting big on cruises. This is why it needs to.

  • Disney Cruise Line has big plans to expand its five-ship fleet.
  • The company plans to debut eight ships over the next seven years, including its first two in Asia.
  • Disney also launched its second private port, Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point.

Insider Today

If you had a genie, what would your three wishes be? If one is going on a Disney cruise , you're in luck — you'll have more opportunities to do so soon.

On Sunday, Disney Cruise Line announced an order for four ships to be delivered between 2027 and 2031 — on top of the four vessels already set to debut through 2029.

These eight vessels would more than double Disney's five-ship fleet in seven years.

Disney hasn't announced many details of its latest order, but it has tapped the German company Meyer Werft to build the four ships. Meyer Werft said it was the "highest order value" in the shipyard's history.

The shipyard also constructed Disney's latest three vessels and is constructing the Disney Treasure and the Disney Destiny, scheduled to debut at the end of 2024 and in 2025.

Disney Cruise Line is also growing its footprint in Asia and the Bahamas

Two of the eight ships would have their home ports in Asia , a first for the cruise company: Disney Adventure, scheduled to debut in Singapore in 2025, and another unnamed ship, set to be operated in Japan by Oriental Land Company, which runs Disney's theme parks in the country.

Related stories

"The cruise ships tend to pay back very quickly," Hugh Johnston, Disney's senior executive vice president and chief financial officer, told analysts in August. "We certainly feel positive about those investments."

In the background of this fleet expansion, Disney Cruise Line also launched its second private destination in the Bahamas, Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point, in June. The new port and the cruise line's first private island , Castaway Cay, are scheduled for more than 70% of Disney's 442 voyages in 2025.

It's a great time for the entertainment giant to bet big on its vacation-at-sea business. Major cruise companies have been experiencing record bookings and demand in 2024.

Disney said in its quarterly earnings that it had seen "strong demand" in its cruise arm, with onboard spending increasing throughout the summer. That could help offset some of its amusement parks' 3% drop in operating income from the same time last year, which it attributed to a "moderation of consumer demand" that surpassed the company's expectations — in step with competitors like Six Flags and Universal.

"The lower-income consumer is feeling a little bit of stress," Johnston told analysts. "The high-income consumer is traveling internationally a bit more." Hopefully, for the company's sake, by cruise ship.

Disney Cruise Cost Pricing Explained

Disney Cruise Cost

Let's start by covering the details of how Disney Cruise costs are calculated between room pricing and cost per person.

Disney Cruise Room Pricing

All Disney Cruise costs are priced based on two adults in the stateroom (room on the ship). This means that one adult traveling with a child (ages 3-12) is the same price as two adults (13 and up) in the room. Children ages 0-2 pay 50% of the child rate.

After the two adult prices, the third and fourth passengers in the stateroom are charged a lower rate. If you are traveling alone, Disney Cruise Line will charge you 100% of the second adult’s cruise fare (not including port fees and taxes) in addition to the full fare for the first adult.

Pricing Per Adult

It is simply impossible to determine exactly how much a person will pay without looking at several different factors. We are going to break these factors on Disney Cruise cost down for you.

Then, we will help you gauge pricing on a budget to pricing with no limits, and everything in between, so that you have an accurate idea of what you can expect to pay for your Disney Cruise itself. The first couple of factors to consider when deciding to book a Disney Cruise and cost are where you want to go and what ship you want to sail on.

disney island cruise

Disney Cruise Ships

Disney currently has 6 signature cruise ships with more on the way.

The newest cruise ship available right now is the Disney Wish, but the Disney Treasure begins sailing in December of 2024, and it is almost time to start booking!

Each Disney ship is decked out from bow to stern in immersive Disney experiences. The experiences are going to differ depending on the ship, where it is sailing to, and if it is a themed expedition or not.

Ships Sailings

  • Disney Magic : Bahamas, Caribbean, Mexico, Panama Canal
  • Disney Wonder : Alaska, Mexico, Caribbean, South Pacific, New Zealand & Australia
  • Disney Dream : Caribbean, Bahamas, Europe, Bermuda, Transatlantic Cruises
  • Disney Fantasy : Caribbean and Bahamas
  • Disney Wish : Bahamas
  • Disney Treasure : Caribbean

Disney Cruise Cost Factors

There are a few factors that will impact the cost of a Disney Cruise like time of year, location of the cruise, plus the Disney Cruise ship chosen.

Time of the year

Disney prices their cruises based on peak seasons. The more in-demand the cruise sailings are, the higher the pricing.

The first peak season is the most expensive. Think about when children are out of school, June – August. There is an increase in demand for ships and sailings, so the pricing also goes up. Alaska, and the Caribbean, are usually priced high during this time. Europe and the Panama Canal are usually only offered during these peak seasons.

Holidays are another popular peak season. The Bahamas and the Caribbean are going to be more expensive during these times because families will want shorter cruises, which are offered to these two locations.

Off-season bookings will be cheaper, but keep in mind, that the weather may not be as cooperative depending upon the location you are sailing to.

When choosing locations for your cruise, a cruise to the more remote destination Alaska is going to cost more than sailing to the Bahamas from Florida.

Europe and the Panama Canal are usually only offered in the summer, which can drive up the price of the cruise.

When deciding on what you want out of your cruise, guests can choose from different night lengths.

Disney currently offers cruises in 1-3, 4, 5-6, 7 8-13, or 14+ lengths. The longer you cruise, the more expensive the cruise is going to be because more amenities are included and paid for in the cruise cost.

Specialty Cruises

Disney offers specialty cruises throughout the year. Each of these specialty cruises is going to include extra events, entertainment, dining specialties, and more that are factored into the higher costs.

Guests can book a Pixar Day at Sea, Marvel Day at Sea, Halloween High Seas, and Holiday-themed cruises.

Disney Cruise cost entertainment

Stateroom type

There are four different types of staterooms guests can book on the cruise ships. A stateroom is the cruise equivalent of your hotel room.

The most luxurious accommodations on the cruise and the most expensive. Each room has a large private verandah (balcony) and premium amenities and services included. Prices for this type of hotel room will be the most expensive out of all rooms on the ship costing upwards of $6,000 for a trip.

The most spacious non-concierge staterooms are in the Verandah category. Each room comes equipped with a private verandah (balcony), some with partial views of the ship and ocean. The space and balcony are worth the price increase if you are sailing on a longer cruise. This category is the second most expensive type of room to choose from and also tends to sell out the quickest. Pricing tends to start around the $3500 total mark for most cruise lengths and destinations.

The oceanview room has more space than an inside room and also includes a porthole or two to be able to see the ocean. This is a great middle price on the cruise where you can still see the ocean passing by, but you don’t have the balcony to walk out on. This type of room falls in the middle pricing category. The cheapest cruises will come in around $2800 total but can go much higher depending on the length and destination.

Disney Cruise inside rooms

The base accommodations feature no outside viewing as the rooms are on the inside of the ship. However, Disney provides a scenic porthole display of different images to make it not feel as claustrophobic. These will be the absolute cheapest rooms due to not having an actual window or balcony. If you want to go on a Disney cruise, but your family is on a strict budget, these rooms will be the cheapest, averaging around the $2,000 – $4,000 range.

Transportation To Port

By far the biggest factor that will vary for each family going on a Disney cruise is the transportation to the Departing Port.

You will need to provide your own flight, take a train, or drive to the port that you are leaving from. This cost is going to vary widely depending on where you live versus where you need to leave from.

We also recommend arriving the day before the cruise is set to depart so there are no delays in boarding the ship at your arrival time. This is going to cost a night at a nearby hotel, which adds to the overall budget for your cruise.

Disney has ports in the following locations:

  • Fort Lauderdale, Florida
  • Port Canaveral, Florida
  • Vancouver, Canada
  • Auckland, New Zealand
  • Barcelona, Spain
  • Honolulu, Hawai’i
  • San Juan, Puerto Rico
  • Melbourne Australia
  • Southampton, England
  • Brisbane, Australia
  • New Orleans, Louisiana
  • Sydney, Australia
  • Civitavecchia (Rome), Italy
  • New York, New York
  • San Diego, California
  • Galveston, Texas

Certain cruises only depart from specific locations. You can filter this when you are searching to book your cruise.

When planning your destinations for your cruise, it is helpful to know where you are going to sail from. The majority of the Bahamas and Caribbean cruises are going to leave from the two ports in Florida, but they also depart from Texas. The Alaskan cruises sail from Vancouver, Canada.

The cheapest way to book transportation is to filter the cruises by which port is closest to you and see which destinations are available. Or, you can filter by destination and then see which ports are the closest to you to help keep costs down.

Keep in mind that if you drive to the port, this will be an additional cost to park your car at the port as well. The fee will be nightly similar to an airport.

What is Included in the Disney Cruise Cost Base Price?

A big question is what do I get for the price tag I see on the Disney Cruise Line website?

What is Not Included in a Disney Cruise?

While Disney Cruises is great at including a lot of amenities in the total trip cost, there are a few extras that you may want while sailing on your ship.

  • Port Excursions
  • Premium desserts
  • Premium coffee (at the Cove cafe)
  • Meals at the adult-only Palo and Remy
  • Gratuities – can be prepaid
  • Wireless Internet Access
  • Baby Nursery (6 months -3 years)

All of these items should be considered when pricing out your Disney Cruise so that you do not have any unexpected costs.

disney island cruise

Menus for restaurants are available on the Disney Cruise Line Website, so you can see if you want to eat somewhere not included in the base price.

Port Excursions are also booked ahead of time, so you can prepay these items and include them in the final cost of your cruise.

Gratuities Explained

On a cruise ship, it is customary to give gratuities in recognition of exceptional service. Disney recommends a gratuity amount of $14.50 USD per night, per stateroom Guest, including infants and children or $15.50 USD per night, per stateroom Guest for concierge and suites.

Pre-Paid Gratuities are distributed to the Crew Members who take care of you in the following roles:

  • Dining room server
  • Dining room assistant server
  • Dining room head server
  • Stateroom host

Easily pre-pay gratuities online to create a carefree, all-inclusive experience by visiting My Reservations in your Disney account and following the prompts for Pre-Paid Gratuities. If you do not pre-pay before boarding the ship, Disney automatically charges your onboard account the suggested gratuity amount. Once on the ship, you can adjust the amount of your Pre-Paid Gratuities by visiting Guest Services prior to the end of your cruise.

Pre-Paid Gratuities do not include the following gratuities, which are either included in the charge or based on your discretion:

  • Extras added to rotational dining meals such as alcoholic beverages
  • Adult dining locations such as Remy, Palo, Palo Steakhouse and Enchanté by Chef Arnaud Lallement, which are not part of rotational dining
  • Food or drink in shops and outdoor or poolside eateries
  • Room service
  • Port Adventures
  • Senses Spa & Salon
  • Concierge Lounge Team—Guests staying in Concierge accommodations are recommended a gratuity amount of $8.00 per night, per stateroom Guest
  • Any other additional services
  • An 18% gratuity is automatically added to bar, beverage, wine, deck service tabs and spa services. All gratuities can be charged to your onboard account.

Breakdown of Pricing

This section of our article is going to take a look at the specific pricing of specific cruises to help estimate Disney Cruise cost. The three most popular Disney Destinations are the Bahamas, the Caribbean, and Alaska, so that is what pricing we are going to focus on.

Disney Cruise On a Budget

If you really want to go on a Disney Cruise and stick to a budget, the 3-night and 4-night cruises are going to be the best option. Depending on how far from your destination you are traveling, the amount of time on the ship versus in a port will vary. The Bahamas destinations are going to offer more time in ports where Caribbean cruises will be more time on the boat.

The cheapest room option on a cruise is always the interior room. However, these rooms don’t have actual windows and can make a very tight space for a family of four, which we are basing all of our pricing on. If possible, spring for at least an Oceanview room where you are guaranteed at least one actual window.

Another way to stay on budget is to adjust the dates. In the tables below, you will see different dates and different ships will provide cheaper options. Cruises during February, August, and September tend to be cheaper, similarly to a Walt Disney World Vacation, whereas cruises during holiday seasons (Spring Break, Christmas, New Years, Halloween, etc.) are going to be more expensive.

3- Night Bahamian Cruise from Fort Lauderdale

  • 4 Guests – 2 adults, 2 children
  • Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point & Nassau, Bahamas

4 – Night Bahamian Cruise from Fort Lauderdale

  • Sailing to Progreso, Mexico

4- Night Western Caribbean Cruise from New Orleans

  • Sailing to Cozumel, Mexico

5- Night Western Caribbean Cruise from New Orleans

  • Sailing to Cozumel, Mexico & Progreso, Mexico

The cheapest Alaskan cruise is about the price of the Concierge Level for other Disney Cruises.

7 – Night Alaskan Cruise from Vancouver

  • Sailing to Glacier Viewing (Stikine Icecap), Alaska; Skagway, Alaska; Juneau, Alaska; Ketchikan, Alaska

Disney Crusie Cost

Mid-Range Disney Cruise Pricing

A 5 – 6 day cruise is a great mid-price range budget. Typically with these cruises you will have enough time to explore the ship while also getting at least two, if not three days in a port of call to explore your destination.

For the longer 5-6 day cruises, we recommend the oceanview or verandah rooms. To keep the budget down and get to experience more for your money, avoid booking the concierge rooms at these middle price points.

Another great way to spend your money is to book one of the themed cruises. Guests can book the Marvel Day at Sea, a Halloween Cruise, or a Merry Christmas Cruise. The prices are going to be higher for these themed cruises even if they are only 5-6 days long, but you get a lot more special activities.

Disney Cruise Cost Aquamouse

5-Night Western Caribbean Cruise from Galveston

5- Night Western Caribbean Cruise from Fort Lauderdale

  • 4 guests – 2 adults, 2 children
  • Sails to George Town, Grand Cayman & Disney Castaway Cay

Disney Cruise Alaska

No Restrictive Budget Pricing

The longer cruise you book, the more ports you can stop at and the greater chance you have to stretch your days at sea to fully explore all that the ship has to offer.

The longer the cruise, guests can also experience more themed Disney nights and formal nights as well. This can make the cruise an extra special vacation due to all of the extra magic you are receiving.

Our recommendation for rooms on a cruise any longer than 5 days is to book at least a verandah room if not the concierge rooms. This is going to provide the most space for the times when you need to escape from the hustle and bustle of the ship.

In addition to the longer cruise, specialty cruises can also be booked during peak times if you don’t have an incredibly restrictive budget.

7 Night Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point Inaugural Cruise from Port Canaveral

Disney Cruise Line Discounts

Disney cruises can be expensive, but there are ways to save money.

The best way to save money is to book as soon as you know when you want to sail.

Cruises price rooms by tiers – the earlier you book, the lower the cost.

Special Pricing

Sometimes Disney will offer special pricing for Florida residents, military personnel, travel agents, and cast members.

They may also offer Kids Sail Free to families with children.

Travel Agencies can also offer promotions if you book through them in the form of Shipboard Credit. While on the ship, you can use this credit for spa treatments, merchandise, photos, and more. Be aware these credits expire at the end of your cruise.

Final Thoughts

A Disney Cruise is an exceptionally personal vacation that allows your family to customize the trip that fits what you want and need. With each ship featuring new shows, themed restaurants, amazing kid areas, and specialty adult-only sections, there is a multitude of opportunities that a Disney Cruise ship offers for a vacation – not to mention the amazing destinations.

Unfortunately, because Disney provides so many different ships and opportunities, it is difficult to narrow down the exact price that a cruise will cost your family. One thing for sure is that you can't put a price on the magical memories that will be made on your Disney Cruise vacation.

How much does a Disney cruise really cost?

Megan duBois

Editor's Note

Disney Cruise Line is known for its family-friendly cruises complete with all of your favorite Disney characters, impeccable dining, exciting entertainment and thrilling ports of call. With everything that's included on the sailings, you might be wondering how much a Disney cruise costs — and if you can afford one.

Cruises with Mickey Mouse and his pals range in price depending on many factors such as the embarkation port and destination, departure date, length of the cruise and cabin type you book. No matter which cruise you book, it will be pricey, like any Disney vacation. You'll have to determine what value you put on experiencing the "magic" of Disney.

For cruise news, reviews and tips, sign up for TPG's cruise newsletter .

To me, it's worth a lot. I've experienced all five ships in the Disney fleet and have sailed seven times to destinations around the Caribbean and the Mediterranean .

Here, I'm sharing how much a Disney cruise costs per ship and itinerary, any extras that are worth the additional fees and how to save money on a Disney cruise.

How much does it cost to go on a Disney cruise?

disney island cruise

Let's be honest: A cruise on any Disney ship isn't cheap. Factors like cabin type and category, sail date, destination, length of cruise, traveling party size and if you're on a themed cruise can impact the overall cost. If you're trying to keep your costs lower, your best option is to pick a cruise on an older ship (Disney Wonder, Disney Magic, Disney Dream, Disney Fantasy) or pick a shorter cruise length.

The cheapest Disney cruise we found cost $1,000 for an inside cabin for two people on a two-night sailing on Disney Wonder in Australia. That's $250 per person per night.

If you're looking for a cheap Caribbean or Bahamian sailing, consider a three-night Bahamas cruise on Disney Magic starting at $1,500 for an inside cabin for two people. This also equates to $250 per person per day. Add in drinks, specialty dining, souvenirs and other expenses, and you can expect to spend around $2,500 in total.

On a recent sailing on the Disney Dream , my family of three and I spent five nights at sea in a balcony room and paid a grand total of $4,514.06. This total included everything from the cruise fare and pre-night hotel stay to parking and spa services.

Some examples of starting prices for each ship and its major itineraries for an inside cabin or a balcony cabin are listed below so you can get a sense of pricing across the fleet. Prices are based on double occupancy.

Disney Magic

One- to three-night Bahamas: inside cabins, $1,500 to $2,500; balcony cabins, $1,900 to $3,300 Four-night Caribbean and Bahamas: inside cabins, $1,800 to $3,200; balcony cabins, $2,300 to $4,000 Five- to six-night Caribbean and Bahamas: inside cabins, $2,200 to $4,400; balcony cabins, $3,000 to $6,600 Seven-night Caribbean: inside cabins, $2,700 to $3,300; balcony cabins, $3,800 to $4,900

Disney Wonder

Two- to three-night Australia: inside cabins, $1,000 to $2,100; balcony cabins, $1,200 to $2,800 Four-night Australia: inside cabins, $1,700 to $3,000; balcony cabins, $2,200 to $4,000 Seven-night Alaska: inside cabins, $3,300 to $5,000; balcony cabins, $5,900 to $10,500

Disney Dream

Three-night Bahamas: inside cabins, $1,700 to $2,300; balcony cabins, $2,000 to $2,600 Four-night Bahamas: inside cabins, $2,100 to $3,500; balcony cabins, $2,500 to $4,000 Five-night Caribbean: inside cabins, $2,800 to $4,400; balcony cabins, $3,100 to $5,000 Five-night Bahamas: inside cabins, $2,700 to $4,000; balcony cabins, $3,200 to $4,600 Seven-night Europe and Mediterranean: inside cabins $4,400 to $6,800; balcony cabins, $5,200 to $9,500

Disney Fantasy

Four-night Bahamas: inside cabins, $2,100 to $3,000; balcony cabins, $2,400 to $3,400 Five- to six-night Bahamas: inside cabins, $2,700 to $4,400; balcony cabins, $3,200 to $4,900 Seven-night Caribbean: inside cabins, $3,300 to $5,700; balcony cabins, $3,900 to $7,000

Where do Disney cruises sail from?

disney island cruise

Disney Cruises depart from 15 different ports around the world, but the major ones to think about from the U.S. include:

  • Fort Lauderdale
  • Port Canaveral, Florida
  • Galveston, Texas
  • New Orleans

The major international ports Disney Cruise Line sets sail from include:

  • Civitavecchia (Rome), Italy
  • Melbourne, Australia
  • Southampton, England
  • Brisbane, Australia
  • Vancouver (British Columbia), Canada

Depending on the cruise you pick, getting to and from the home port can be easy or take a little longer — and that can impact the total cost of your Disney cruise.

For instance, many people drive to Fort Lauderdale or Port Canaveral if they already live in the southern U.S. Driving can save money versus flying, and you might not have to stay in a pre-cruise hotel if you can drive right to the port.

You will have to pay to park at the port or at a third-party parking lot. While the off-site parking lots are often cheaper, you will need to think about how to get to and from the ship, tipping the porter or driver, plus the added time to get from your car to the ship.

On the other hand, if you are taking a cruise from an international destination or flying to a domestic home port, your costs automatically go up because of flights for your family, a pre-cruise hotel, meals before the sailing, and transportation to the ship and back to the airport.

What's included in the price of a Disney cruise?

disney island cruise

You might pay a lot for a Disney cruise, but you get a lot for your money. The cost of a Disney cruise covers your onboard dining and most nonalcoholic drinks, an abundance of entertainment for kids and adults, onboard activities and transportation between cruise ports. Even most entertainment and food on Disney's private island Castaway Cay (and upcoming private island destination Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point) is part of the fare.

Entertainment

Most of the entertainment on board is included in the overall cost of your sailing. On your cruise, you can experience Broadway-quality shows inside the Walt Disney Theater, watch first-run movies from Disney's production companies (like Disney, Pixar, Marvel and Star Wars), listen to live music and participate in game shows in the adults-only lounges. Most itineraries feature a deck party with a fireworks show.

Kids can meet and play with their favorite Disney characters and participate in activities like karaoke. Family-friendly sun decks with pools, waterslides, splash zones and wading pools are also included in the cost.

disney island cruise

Disney Cruise Line is known for its rotational dining evening dinner service. Families rotate through three onboard restaurants throughout the sailing, and your service team moves with you. Each of the rotational dining options is included in your cruise fare. One of the restaurants will be open for drop-in, sit-down meals during breakfast and lunch as well. Complimentary room service is available 24 hours a day.

On the upper decks, quick-service food stations, soft-serve ice cream and a buffet are available. Every Disney cruise also includes unlimited coffee, tea and soda.

Accommodations

Almost every cabin across the Disney fleet features Disney's distinctive split bathroom concept. One of the bathrooms has a vanity, sink and tub-shower, plus another bathroom with a vanity, sink and toilet. Each room also has a small refrigerator, safe and hair dryer.

disney island cruise

Every child ages 3 to 17 will have access to Disney's kids clubs on board. Youngsters ages 3-10 can enjoy Disney's Oceaneer Club and Disney's Oceaneer Lab . Tweens ages 11-14 have access to Edge, and teens ages 14-17 can chill out in Vibe.

Each kids club has dedicated counselors and a host of activities every day. The best way to see the list of activities is to download the Disney Cruise Line Navigator app and scroll through the daily agenda. You can flag activities your kids want to attend, so you can get to the kids clubs before they start.

Adult-exclusive activities

Disney cruises are packed with family-friendly programming, but adults can find spaces and events geared just for them in the adult-only nightclubs and lounges on board. Live music, interactive games and shows are only some of the nightly activities.

Additionally, adults have a dedicated pool and hot tub area that includes a bar and coffee shop. (Drinks cost extra, but access is free). For those looking to stay fit while onboard, access to the fitness center is also included.

Castaway Cay

disney island cruise

On most Bahamas and Caribbean sailings, you'll stop at Disney's private island, Castaway Cay . At the island, your family can enjoy the family beach or adult-exclusive beach (for those 18 and older).

Use of towels, beach chairs and shade umbrellas are complimentary, as are waterslides and splash zones. Live music and character appearances take place around the island. Kids and teen club activities are available on Castaway Cay — again, at no extra charge. Runners can participate in the Castaway Cay 5K and get a finisher medal.

When it's time to eat, three spots serve an included barbecue lunch, complete with soft-serve ice cream. Coffee, tea and fountain drinks are also included at Castaway Cay.

To get around the island, you can walk or use the complimentary trams.

Are there any extra Disney costs?

Even though many activities, dining options and entertainment are included in the cost of your cruise, you will find things to pay extra for on a Disney cruise. These may or may not be worth it for your family, depending on your budget and interests. Below is a list of things not included in your overall cruise fare.

Some of the cutest Disney activities are also ones that cost extra. Kids who want more time with the Disney characters might be interested in the Royal Court Royal Tea — a tea party with characters for kids ages 3 to 12. According to planDisney (Disney's online resource for vacation-planning tips) , the cost is $220 per child and $69 for anyone 13 and up. Each tea party includes a selection of tea and a two-course meal; every child gets an assortment of gifts.

Kids can also play dress-up and get a full regal or pirate (only available on Pirate Party Nights) makeover at Bibbidi Bobbidi Boutique, found on every Disney ship. Depending on the package you booked for your child, expect to pay $100 to $450 for each makeover.

Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy both have a virtual sports simulator that requires a reservation and a fee. You can play various sports, from football to golf, for either 30- or 60-minute time blocks. Cost varies based on time, sport and number of people playing.

Specialty dining and cocktails

disney island cruise

Four specialty dining restaurants are offered across the Disney Cruise Line fleet. Exclusive to Disney Wish (and coming soon to Disney Treasure ) are Enchante and Palo Steakhouse. Expect to pay $60 to $205 plus an 18% auto-gratuity for a meal at Enchante; Palo Steakhouse is $50 for a prix-fixe meal, but an a la carte menu is also available.

On the four other Disney Cruise Line ships, Palo is also $50 for prix-fixe and offers an a la carte menu. An 18% auto-gratuity is also tacked onto your bill.

On Disney Dream and Disney Fantasy, Remy is also available, with the dessert experience starting at $65 without the 18% auto-gratuity, while brunch and dinner are $80 and $135 respectively, plus an additional 18% auto-gratuity.

On all ships, themed bars and lounges sling drinks. Because there's no drink package available through Disney Cruise Line, you will have to pay for each drink individually. The planDisney panel says the average drink can range from $6 to $20.

If you're looking for specialty coffee, tea or hot chocolate drinks, look for the Cove Cafe on all ships; there are also specialty counters off of the atrium on Disney Dream, Fantasy and Wish. These drinks cost anywhere from $5 to $8, depending on your order. You can also order alcoholic drinks from the coffee bars, which run the typical cocktail prices.

Outside the Walt Disney Theater or near the movie theaters on board each ship, you'll also smell the buttery goodness of freshly popped popcorn. You can buy the popcorn for an added fee to take into the shows with you. Additionally, there are some specialty popcorn buckets available for purchase on each ship; you can refill them for a discounted price every time you want to munch on the salty snack. (Specialty buckets purchased off the ships at a Disney resort or theme park are not eligible for a discounted popcorn refill.)

Additionally, each ship offers beverage-tasting seminars where you can learn how to make and taste a variety of cocktails in a given category. Seminars can range from $40 to $70 and last about an hour.

While crew gratuities on Disney Cruise Line are not included in the overall cost, some can be prepaid before you step onboard. These include gratuities to your dining room server, assistant server and head server, plus your cabin host. Disney recommends a gratuity of $14.50 per night per person, including infants and children in regular cabins. It's recommended that those in concierge cabins and suites pay $15.50, with the extra going to your cabin assistant host.

Gratuities that are not included can be paid on board. Such gratuities include anything extra you would like to give to your service team, tips on alcoholic beverages in the dining room, adult dining locations, room service and the spa. The concierge lounge team is also not included in prepaid gratuities for concierge guests, and Disney recommends $8 per night per guest.

Keep in mind that an 18% gratuity is automatically added to bar tabs across the ship and for spa services. To make it easy while on the ship, you can charge all your gratuities to your onboard account.

If you want to bring something home from your trip — whether from a port of call or from the onboard shops — you'll want to budget for that extra cost. Souvenirs off the ship can range from a few dollars to a few hundred dollars, depending on what you buy. Be prepared that some shops will only take local currency; purchases at Castaway Cay shops will be charged to your onboard account.

On the ship, easy-to-transport souvenirs included trading pins, magnets and apparel. These can range anywhere from $20 to $75. Other more expensive onboard souvenirs include jewelry, luxury brand purses and wallets, and art.

How do I save money on a Disney cruise?

disney island cruise

If you're reeling from sticker shock, know you can find many ways to save money on a Disney cruise. Here are a few of my favorite money-saving tips.

Letting Disney choose your cabin can be a great way to get a deal on the cruise. These are known as guaranteed rates, and they are the cheapest fares in each category. All you have to do is pick your room type, such as inside, ocean view or balcony, and Disney picks which specific room number you get. This works best if you don't care where your room is on the ship.

If you're looking for a room upgrade , but that's not a make-it-or-break-it deal for your family, consider waiting to upgrade your room until you get to the port. If your cruise still has rooms available, you can ask at check-in about a room upgrade for a discount. The cost will be relative to the room type you originally booked and the room type you want to upgrade to. Sometimes, you can even upgrade to a concierge room or a suite, but you will need to get an early port arrival time to potentially score one of those upgrades.

Disney Cruise Line has one of the most generous alcohol policies of any big-ship cruise brand. At the start of your cruise, you can bring up to six cans of beer or two bottles of wine per person over 21 years old. Then, at each port, you can restock and bring the same alcohol allotment per person over 21 onto the ship to store in your room and enjoy. You might find that beer and wine are cheaper in port than on board — a smart way to save on your drinking expenses.

Are Disney cruises cheaper or more expensive than other cruise lines?

disney island cruise

Other family-friendly cruise brands include Carnival Cruise Line, Royal Caribbean, Norwegian Cruise Line and MSC Cruises. While all of the family-friendly brands have pros and cons, picking the right one for your family can come down to a matter of cost. Disney is almost always the most expensive.

For example, we priced out a three-night weekend cruise departing on the same dates for Disney Wish and Royal Caribbean 's soon-to-debut Utopia of the Seas. We found that Disney was almost $500 more expensive for the same weekend, cabin type and length of sailing. Utopia of the Seas came out to $2,850.10 for two people staying in a balcony cabin, while the Disney Wish cruise, also in a balcony room, cost $3,337.20.

What Disney does best — and why many people choose to cruise with the brand — is it provides a high level of service to families, even those in the least expensive cabins. The crew on Disney ships goes above and beyond to make your vacation easy. I've seen everything from dining staff cutting kids' food and taking children to the bathroom to room hosts ensuring parents know about the parental locks on balcony doors (so kids can't just wander outside without an adult).

The extra amenities that Disney offers — such as Broadway-quality shows, character experiences and larger standard cabins — all bring the overall cruise cost up.

Disney also has a smaller fleet than all its family-friendly competitors, meaning there is less cabin inventory to sell. Plus, its ships generally carry fewer passengers. For example, Disney Wish, Disney's biggest ship, carries 4,000 people at full capacity; Royal Caribbean's Icon of the Seas can carry 7,600 guests at capacity. The low inventory combined with the high demand for Disney cruises means that Disney can charge higher fares and still fill ships.

Bottom line

Cruise fares with Disney can change based on factors like room type, travel party size and sailing date. The minimum price you can expect to pay for a cruise to the Caribbean or Bahamas starts at $1,500 for an inside cabin for two people on Disney Magic.

Disney Cruise Line includes a variety of dining experiences (including room service), soda, character meet-and-greets and Broadway-caliber entertainment in its fares; it also allows passengers to bring alcohol on board in every port of call. For these reasons, you don't necessarily have to spend much on board to have a fantastic vacation. The cruise can be a good value depending on the extras you choose to add.

The real question is whether you want to spend more on the base cruise fare to immerse yourself in the world of Disney versus paying less for another family-friendly cruise line.

Disney Cruise Line Announces Fleet Expansion to Continue Period of Unprecedented Growth

Disney Cruise Line — one of Disney Experiences’ strongest growing businesses — is setting course for an ambitious future.

Josh D’Amaro — Chairman of Disney Experiences — unveiled at D23: The Ultimate Fan Event Presented by Visa ® on Saturday that four new ships will be joining Disney Cruise Line’s award-winning fleet.

With five ships in the current fleet and four others already in development, the additional four ships announced on Saturday, which will be delivered between 2027 and 2031, will bring the total size of the fleet to 13.

“Disney Cruise Line is consistently the top-rated cruise line for families because it offers something for everyone. Expanding our fleet gives more people, in more parts of the world, the opportunity to experience a vacation at sea like only Disney can provide,” Josh D’Amaro, Chairman of Disney Experiences, said at Horizons: Disney Experiences Showcase.

The ship names, designs, and itineraries are still in development.

“Disney Cruise Line is a shining example of the diversity and breadth of experiences that make up the Disney Experiences portfolio – bringing together our signature Disney service, storytelling and innovation,” Thomas Mazloum — president, New Experiences Portfolio and Disney Signature Experiences — said. “Our growing fleet will further strengthen Disney Cruise Line’s position as a leader in family cruising.”

“Disney Cruise Line has produced strong returns on capital investment, thanks to high quality experiences, generating strong guest satisfaction ratings and consistent demand: occupancy reached 97% across its five ships in Q2 2024.

The news of the fleet expansion also builds on an exciting series of announcements for Disney Cruise Line in recent months.

In July, it was revealed that Disney and Oriental Land Co., Ltd. (OLC) entered a new agreement that will bring year-round Disney cruise vacations to Japan, expected to commence by early 2029.

In June, Disney Cruise Line welcomed guests for the first time to Disney Lookout Cay at Lighthouse Point, the newest destination on the island of Eleuthera, The Bahamas.

And just last week, new details were revealed about the Disney Destiny that will set sail in November 2025. At D23, Josh announced an all-new Broadway-style stage show, “Disney Hercules,” will debut onboard the Disney Destiny.

Fans also got a first look at a new rendering from “Disney The Tale of Moana” at D23.  The new stage show — which premieres on the Disney Treasure later this year — will bring Moana’s unforgettable adventure to life, including her courageous stand against Te Kā, the fiery lava-wielding foe who will appear on stage as an incredible fifteen-foot-tall puppet — the largest ever produced for a Disney Cruise Line show.

Disney Cruise Line just announced four new ships.

No, not the ones you’re thinking of.

We already knew the Disney Treasure is launching this December, the Disney Adventure and Disney Destiny will set sail next year, and that Disney is partnering with Oriental Land Company, which owns Tokyo Disney Resort , on a new OLC-owned ship inspired by the Disney Wish .

Four additional ships were announced Saturday night at D23: The Ultimate Disney Fan Event. The new ships will launch between 2027 and 2031. Together, with the four previously announces ships, they will double the size of Disney Cruise Line's fleet in less than a decade.

D23’s biggest parks announcements: New lands, experiences announced for Disney World and beyond

“The demand on our existing cruise fleet is very, very high, so we know there's a big opportunity here to invest aggressively in incremental cruise ships,” Disney Experiences Chairman Josh D’Amaro told USA TODAY. There are currently five ships in the fleet.

Disney Cruise Line is very popular among Disney fans, particularly families.

“We know that when guests get on one of our ships, 40, 50% of them are saying the only reason I'm cruising today is because Disney is here, so we've essentially created this space,” he said. “We also know that those guests are having exceptional experiences with us. They rate us very, very highly, and they tend to want to come back.”

He said the additional ships will connect with even wider audiences.

Citing Disney Adventure, which will be Disney’s first to sail Southeast Asia, he said,  “Now we're going to have a fleet that can go meet our fans where they are and tell all these amazing stories that we have.”

Disney unveils plans for four new cruise ships to nearly treble its fleet by 2031

Disney has unveiled plans to add four new ships to their cruise lines , almost trebling its fleet by 2031.

The announcement was made at D23, the Disney annual convention event in Anaheim, California, by Josh D’Amaro, chairman of Disney Experiences. At the event it was also revealed that six new themed lands and areas dedicated to some of the company’s most-loved characters will be developed in Disney parks across the world.

The fleet will be expanded between 2027 and 2031, and once these vessels are built, Disney fans will be able to choose from 13 different experiences, all delivering entertainment, dining and guest services in even more areas of the globe.

The Walt Disney Company already has five ships in its fleet , and four more were already in development before the announcement.

“Disney Cruise Line is consistently the top-rated cruise line for families because it offers something for everyone. Expanding our fleet gives more people, in more parts of the world, the opportunity to experience a vacation at sea like only Disney can provide,” D’Amaro said at D23.

The Disney Cruise Line is regarded by the company as one of their strongest growing businesses, having produced strong returns on capital investment, having a high level of guest satisfaction ratings and also being subject to constant demand, the Walt Disney Company said.

Thomas Mazloum, president of the New Experiences Portfolio and Disney Signature Experiences, said: “Our growing fleet will further strengthen Disney Cruise Line’s position as a leader in family cruising.”

The news of expansion comes only weeks after other major Disney Cruise news was announced, including Disney and Oriental Land Co., Ltd entering an agreement in July to deliver a year-round Disney cruise to Japan expected to start in 2029.

Disney also announced some of their ships will make their maiden voyages in 2025, such as the Disney Adventure ship and Disney Destiny, which will feature the all-new Broadway-style stage show, ‘Disney Hercules’ which will debut onboard the Destiny.

At D23, fans also got a glimpse of a new rendering of ‘Disney The Tale of Moana,’ a new stage show which will premiere on the Disney Treasure later this year.

The show will include a fifteen-foot-tall puppet of Te Kā, Moana’s lava-wielding foe, the largest ever produced for a Disney Cruise Line show.

Disney Adventure will be the seventh launch by Disney Cruises , after Disney Treasure later this year, and the largest by far, with space for 6,700 guests and 2,500 crew.

With a gross tonnage of 208,000, Disney Adventure will be about 44 per cent larger than the line’s current biggest cruise ship, Disney Wish.

Setting sail from Singapore in 2025, the new super liner marks Disney Cruise’s first foray into Asia , calling Singapore’s Marina Bay Cruise Centre its home port.

While Dinsey aficionados wait to hear what the ship names, designs, and itineraries will be for the four newly announced ships, they can also look forward to the major extensions to the Disney parks, with areas and attractions dedicated to The Avengers, The Lion King and Frozen to name a few.

Disney Announces Major Cruise Line Expansion with 4 New Ships

Disney Cruise Line will add the new ships to its fleet by 2031.

Disney Cruise Line plans to add four new ships in the coming years, bringing its total fleet size to 13.

The new ships, which Disney announced as part of its D23 event this weekend, will arrive between 2027 and 2031. Disney said the names of the new ships, their design, and where they would sail were still in development.

“At Disney Experiences, Imagineers dream, create, design and build these stories into real places… everything we’re going to share with you is in active development,” Josh D’Amaro, the chairman of Disney Experiences, said in a statement. “Plans are drawn. Dirt is moving.”

In addition to the newly announced ships, Disney currently operates five ships and is planning on adding four more in the near future, including the Disney Destiny , which the company plans to launch in 2025. That ship will feature a heroes and villains theme along with recently-announced new restaurants like a “The Lion King”-themed spot complete with windows that transition from sunrise to sunset as you eat, tiered risers made to look like African drums, live musicians and storytellers, and favorite songs like the “Circle of Life” and “Hakuna Matata.”

The company is also preparing for the launch of the Disney Treasure , which is set to hit the high seas late this year. Over the weekend, D’Amaro detailed a new onboard stage production all about “Moana” on the ship, which will feature a larger-than-life 15-foot-tall puppet version of the fiery Te Kā.

“I’ve had a chance to see this in person, and it is stunning,” D’Amaro said, adding the puppet was “the largest we’ve ever produced for a Disney Cruise Line show.”

Currently, Disney sails to the Caribbean, Northern Europe, the Mediterranean, Alaska, Bermuda, Canada, Mexico, Hawaii, Australia, and beyond.

In addition to large ocean cruises , Disney operates a series of expedition and river cruises through its Adventures by Disney brand.
