North iceland travel guide.

Iceland and its splendid north is a traveler’s heaven. A paradise of majestic waterfalls, lunar landscapes, bubbling hot springs, snow-capped mountains, and whale-filled fjords; this is Iceland at its finest.

As it is closer to the Arctic Circle, the northern region has stronger arctic characteristics than any other area in the country. Winters are darker with more snow than anywhere else in Iceland. The Northern Lights are visible more often and the sun never dips below the horizon in summer, unlike in the south where it does so for a few hours even in mid-summer.

mossy green volcanic craters near myvatn

North Iceland’s natural attractions are extremely varied. Volcanic activity has created plenty of impressive sites where you can feel the raw power of the Earth. There are endless surprises waiting to be uncovered: mind-blowing lava fields packed with odd basalt stacks, rock bridges, and other bizarre formations including crater lakes, furious geothermal fields, mineral-rich geothermal baths, and spectacular volcano trails.

One of Iceland’s largest (and probably cutest) towns is located in the north. Little Akureyri topped Lonely Planet's list of the ten best places to visit in Europe in 2015. Windy meadows dotted with freely grazing sheep and Viking horses stretch along a fjord. Adorable fishing villages with cozy country hotels and charming restaurants await travelers. Unparalleled views can be found in every direction.

small fishing boat Siglufjordur Town

Sea fishing, whale watching, seal watching, geothermal baths, and local craft beer tastings are just a few amazing activities to try among the many that North Iceland has to offer. In winter, you have the best chance to witness the mystical Northern Lights as they dance across the skies. Traveling to North Iceland will surely bring you the unmatched Icelandic ambiance!

North Iceland’s Must-Visit Places

Grábrók crater.

unique volcanic crater named grabok in iceland

Grábrók is an impressive volcanic crater in Northwest Iceland. It was formed approximately 3,400 years ago during a fissure eruption. The crater belongs to the longest volcanic system in Iceland, extending 90 kilometers (56 miles) over the Snæafellsnes Peninsula.

The volcanic event that created Grábrók left behind a 7-square-kilometer (4.3 mile) lava field that is 20 meters (66 feet) thick with three craters that lie next to each other. The two smaller craters, Rauðbrók and Smábrók, can be seen from the top of Grábrók.

There is a short hike to the top along a nicely built footpath that is comfortable for anyone. The crater is only 170 meters (560 feet) high. From the top, there is a spectacular 360° panorama over the moss-covered lava field, the two other craters, and the outstandingly beautiful landscape of Borgarfjörður Bay.

man standing and watching a sunset near hvitserkur

Hvítserkur is a 15-meter (49 foot) high basalt sea stack just off the eastern coast of the Vatnsnes Peninsula in Northwest Iceland. This bizarre phenomenon is a very popular photography location, as the oddly shaped monolith resembles an animal, or to be Icelandic, a troll. Many see an elephant or a rhino, while for others it is a dragon or a dinosaur. No matter what specific animal you may see, it looks like a living creature lowering its head to drink from the sea.

This rock formation is the nesting ground for several species of birds, such as gulls and fulmars. The name Hvítserkur translates to “white shirt,” referring to the bird guano that covers the rocks in summer.

As the Icelandic folk legend goes, Hvítserkur was originally a troll from the Westfjords. It came down from the mountains to destroy the annoying bells of the nearby church. Trolls were not Christians and thus tried to protect their ancient religion. In the end, the troll failed to notice the rising sun. It was touched by the sunlight and was petrified for eternity.

There is a viewpoint where you can look down on the monolith and can also climb down a steep trail to its base. At low tide, it is possible to walk straight to the rock, but in high tide, you will only be able to get within 10 to 20 meters of it.

Glaumbaer Turf Houses in iceland at summer

The Glaumbær Turf Farm is a captivating historic site in North Iceland. The farm consists of 13 age-old turf houses that today serve as a folk museum about historic rural Iceland. The farm was inhabited until 1947 and turned into a heritage museum in 1952.

A farm is believed to have stood here since the time of its settlement, ca 874 AD. The oldest of the current buildings, however, dates back to 1750. This historic farm was the home of Snorri Þorfinnsson, who is believed to have lived here with his parents in the 11th century. According to historians, Snorri’s parents went to explore the unknown seas and found America long before Columbus, so Snorri was probably the first European to be born in America.

There are also two charming timber houses from the 19th century, probably the first timber houses built in the region. Both building host exhibitions, but the yellow one, Áshús, is also a café which serves a traditional Icelandic menu in the setting of an authentic household.

Goðafoss Waterfall

standing near godafoss waterfall at summer

The spectacular and historic Goðafoss Waterfall is believed to have been named after Iceland switching from the Norse religion to Christianity. According to legend, Þorgeir Ljósvetningargoð, who was a lawmaker in the old Alþingi parliament, threw his statues of the pagan gods into the falls when taking up Christianity.

Some others believe, however, that the name simply refers to the godlike splendor of the cascades. This is completely credible. The cascade is fed by the river Skjálfandafljót, the fourth largest river in Iceland. The water falls from a height of 12 meters (39 feet) over a width of 30 meters (38 feet), forming a spectacular half-circle or horseshoe shape. According to the locals, this waterfall is often referred to as "Beauty," while its neighboring waterfall, Dettifoss, is labeled the "Beast."

Dettifoss Waterfall

happy hiker near dettifoss waterfall in north iceland

Dettifoss has a reputation as the most powerful waterfall in Europe with the greatest volume. The Norwegian Sarp Falls, however, have a greater water flow but are only half as tall as Dettifoss.

500 cubic meters of water tumble over the edge of the Beast per second, dropping 45 meters (144 feet) over an impressive 100 meters (33 feet) of width. The water originates from the giant Vatnajökull Glacier is collected from a large area in Northeast Iceland. It should not be surprising, therefore, that Dettifoss enchants every visitor!

Lake Mývatn

myvatn lake view with trees around it in summer

Covering an area of 36.5 km2 (22.6 square miles), Mývatn is the fourth largest lake in Iceland. It is a shallow lake with extremely rich water and a vast area of wetlands that provides a great habitat for an exceptionally rich collection of flora and fauna.

Mývatn is situated in an area of active volcanoes near the Krafla volcano. The lake itself is the result of a major eruption that occurred 2,300 years ago. This event formed the surrounding landscape which is now dominated by volcanic landforms including lava fields, countless tiny islands, active geothermal areas, bizarre lava pillar parks, and impressive craters. The Lake Mývatn area is deservedly one of Iceland’s most precious natural gems.

Skútustaðir

Pseudocrater in winter near myvatn lake in north iceland

This curious geological feature is the best seen from the air. Skútustaðagigar are the picturesque pseudocraters that formed approximately 2,300 years ago during the same volcanic event that created the Dimmuborgir lava field. When molten lava entered the lake and trapped the wet sediment underneath, the many steam eruptions resulted in widely varied and interesting lava rock formations. The pseudocraters look like small volcanic craters, but it was stream rather than lava that exited through the vents. Today, these friendly, small craters are covered with grass and with marked walking paths wind through the area.

Krafla Volcano

krafla volcanic area in north iceland geothermal steam

Krafla is one of the most well-known volcanoes in Iceland with a peak that reaches 818 meters. The caldera of the volcano is approximately 10 kilometers (6.2 miles) in diameter and 2 kilometers (1.2 miles) deep, sitting on a 90-kilometer (56 mile) long fissure zone. Throughout recorded history, Krafla has erupted 29 times with the most recent eruption lasting for 9 years and ending in 1984.

Krafla is still an active volcano but has no eruptions happening at the moment. The vast area around the Krafla caldera, however, is characterized by very strong geothermal activity. The Krafla Geothermal Power Plant is one of the largest in the country. The power of Krafla also feeds the beautiful Mývatn Nature Baths which are known as the Blue Lagoon of the North. The geothermal field at Námaskarð is among the most striking in Iceland.

Víti Crater

askja area viti crater aerial view near myvatn in iceland

There is an insanely picturesque crater lake in the Krafla volcanic system. Its name, Víti, translates to ‘Hell.’ The name refers to the massive, five-year-long volcanic eruption that took place in Krafla and which formed the stunning Víti Lake. Today, the 300-meter (984 foot) wide volcanic crater is filled with milky greenish-blue water that was once warm but is cold today. The ground, however, still steams around the crater, giving it an otherworldly look.

Dimmuborgir

a walking path near dimmuborgir in north iceland

Dimmuborgir is another piece of impressive proof of the violent volcanic history in the Krafla system around Mývatn. This magnificent lava field was formed approximately 2,300 years ago. According to geologists, molten lava flowed over the water, trapping it underneath the surface. Eventually, the water started to boil and steam vents broke through the lava. This formed a wide variety of lava sculptures which then solidified and will remain standing there for eternity.

This enthralling lava sculpture park is loaded with massive lava rock pillars, caverns, tunnels, lava bridges, and other odd rock formations. Exploring this bizarre scenery feels like walking on another planet! Don't be surprised if you happen to run into trolls or other magical creatures here!

Námaskarð / Námafjall / Hverír / Hverarönd

geothermal hverir mud pools in namafjall area

This specific geothermal field has at least four names, so don’t be surprised when you hear different versions. They all refer to the same place: a thrilling geothermal field near Mývatn. The area is located in the Krafla volcanic system and is wildly active today.

One of Iceland’s most impressive (and probably loudest) fumaroles is found here, along with countless bubbling hot springs and mud pots surrounded by poisonous soil. Minerals have painted the site with vivid colors and an intense sulfur smell fills the air. With the quaint, 432-meter (1,417 foot) high Námafjall mountain in the background, this site may be the most impressive of all of the Icelandic geothermal fields.

The Mývatn Nature Baths

sunrise at myvatn nature baths in summer

This gorgeous bath is North Iceland’s answer to the Blue Lagoon. The Mývatn Nature Baths have the same milky-blue, mineral-rich waters, and spectacular panorama. Iceland’s northern Blue Lagoon is more intimate, less touristic, and less hyped than the original Blue Lagoon, though.

The approximately 130°C water comes straight from the National Power Company’s borehole. It is stored and cooled in a huge basin right next to the lagoon, forming an impressive, man-made hot spring. When it flows into the lagoon, the temperature is a friendly 36-40°C. The water contains a large number of healthy algae and minerals in which undesired bacteria cannot thrive. Mývatn is definitely a must-visit place for lovers of hot springs!

whale watching tour boat in iceland near dalvik town

With approximately 1,400 inhabitants, Dalvík is a tiny, adorable fishing village in North Iceland. It sits on Tröllaskagi, the ‘Troll peninsula,’ on the shore of the Eyjafjörður fjord. This bay is widely known as one of the best whale watching sites in Iceland. Zooplankton and krill flourish in the sheltered bay where warm and cold currents mix, creating extraordinarily rich feeding grounds for whales all year round.

Humpback whales, white-beaked dolphins, minke whales, and harbor porpoises are very commonly seen off the shore of Dalvík. Humpback whales are renowned for being the most fun whales to observe.

They always show off their giant tails before they dive and have many entertaining behaviors at the surface, such as leaping, fin slapping, and approaching the boats. Visitors love watching them show off! Whale sighting success rates exceed 98 percent, with over 99 percent in summer. In 2018, the whale sighting success rate was 100% throughout the summer season.

The fjord is surrounded by beautiful mountains and a gorgeous landscape. Dalvík is surely one of the best whale watching areas in the world!

small town in north iceland named hofsos

Hofsós has a long history as one of the oldest trading ports in North Iceland. From the 16th to the 18th century, it was a rather busy trading port. Thanks to its great location and the rich water of the bay, Hofsós was a major trading post for the Danish Trade Monopoly.

The houses in the old village and around the harbor have been renovated recently, giving the town an extremely charming look. Hofsós is also famous for its geothermal pool. Its view could easily be awarded a prize for the best view from a swimming pool in Iceland. The pool was built into the hillside above the sea, allowing it to provide a flawless view over the fjord and the marvelously scenic Drangey Island.

a view of akureyri from the other fjord side in iceland

Akureyri is the second-largest urban area in Iceland, after Reykjavík. With a population of approximately 19,000 inhabitants, Akureyri is a busy metropolis compared to any other town or village in North Iceland. It is often nicknamed “the capital of the North.”

Akureyri is an important fishing port and cultural center. Cozy cafés, fine restaurants, various art galleries and museums, busy festivals, and excellent hospitality facilities await travelers. For these reasons as well as for its charming downtown and unique ambiance, little Akureyri topped the list of the ten best places to visit in Europe in 2015.

small boats in husavik town in north iceland

According to the Book of Settlement,   Húsavík   was the first place in Iceland to be settled by a Norseman. A Swedish Viking wintered here at around 870 AD, six decades before the first official settlement on Iceland. When he left the island in the spring, he left behind a man and two slaves who then established the very first farm in Iceland at Húsavík.

Today, Húsavík has around 2,200 inhabitants and is a vibrant little village. Plenty of cozy cafés, restaurants, and guest houses are available to serve the rapidly growing number of tourists.

Ásbyrgi Canyon

large canyon named asbyrgi in north iceland

Ásbyrgi is a gigantic horseshoe-shaped canyon created by catastrophic glacial river flooding after the last Ice Age, 8,000-10,000 years ago. The canyon is located in the Vatnajökull National Park. It is 3.5 kilometers (2.17 miles) long and over 1 kilometer (0.6 miles) wide, framed with dramatic 100-meter (330 foot) high cliffs. A 25-meter (82 foot) high cliff cuts through the middle, making it look like a giant horseshoe. According to legend, the canyon is the footprint Sleipnir, Odin’s 8-legged horse.

In summer, the ground is beautifully covered with colorful flowers. The chorus of the birds is amplified by special acoustics in the lush forest of birch trees. Hiking here is truly a special experience!

Our expert guides will take you to the best viewing spots away from the city lights, increasing your chances of seeing this natural wonder. While the Northern Lights are a natural phenomenon and sightings can never be guaranteed, our guides will share their knowledge and insights about the lights, ensuring you have an unforgettable experience.

Best Time to See the Northern Lights in Iceland

If you're planning a trip to Iceland to witness the northern lights, the best time to go is during the winter months, from September to April. During this period, the nights are long and dark, providing optimal conditions for spotting the aurora borealis. The increased darkness allows the lights to be more visible and vibrant against the night sky.

Within the winter months, there are certain factors that can further enhance your chances of seeing the northern lights. The months of October and March are considered the best times, as they offer a good balance between the frequency of aurora activity and the weather conditions. Additionally, the northern lights tend to be more active around the equinoxes in March and September.

While the winter months offer the highest probability of seeing the northern lights, they also come with colder temperatures and potentially harsh weather conditions. It's important to dress warmly and be prepared for cold temperatures, as you may need to spend several hours outside waiting for the lights to appear. However, the reward of witnessing this incredible natural phenomenon is well worth braving the cold.

The Alþingi was one of the oldest parliamentary institutions in the world and played a crucial role in shaping Iceland's legal and political systems. Walking through the park, you'll encounter the Law Rock, where laws were proclaimed and disputes were settled. Dressing for Iceland Day Tours: Stay Comfortable and Prepared

Embarking on day tours in Iceland offers a remarkable opportunity to witness the country's breathtaking scenery and natural wonders. However, with its ever-changing weather conditions and diverse terrain, it's essential to dress appropriately to fully enjoy your adventure. In this article, we will guide you on how to dress for Iceland day tours, ensuring that you stay comfortable and prepared throughout your journey.

Understanding the Climate in Iceland: Be Prepared for Rapid Changes

Iceland's climate is notoriously unpredictable, with weather conditions that can change rapidly throughout the day. This is due to the country's location in the North Atlantic, where it is influenced by both cold Arctic air and warm Gulf Stream currents. As a result, it's common to experience a mix of sunshine, rain, wind, and even snow, all in the same day.

To navigate these climate variations, it's important to understand the concept of layering. Layering your clothing allows you to easily adapt to changing weather conditions by adding or removing layers as needed. By incorporating base layers, mid-layers, and outerwear into your outfit, you can stay warm and comfortable, regardless of the weather.

Importance of Dressing Appropriately for Day Tours: Comfort and Safety

Properly dressing for Iceland day tours is not just a matter of comfort; it's also a matter of safety. The country's rugged landscapes and challenging terrains require clothing that can withstand the elements and protect you from potential hazards.

For example, if you're planning on hiking through volcanic landscapes or exploring glaciers, you'll need clothing that provides insulation, waterproofing, and durability. Wearing the wrong type of clothing can make you vulnerable to hypothermia, frostbite, or injuries from slips and falls.

Additionally, dressing appropriately for day tours allows you to fully enjoy and appreciate Iceland's natural wonders without worrying about discomfort or distraction. By investing in the right clothing and gear, you can focus on the breathtaking beauty surrounding you, rather than being preoccupied with your own discomfort.

Layering for Warmth and Comfort: The Key to Adaptability

Layering is the key to staying warm and comfortable in Iceland's ever-changing weather conditions. The layering system consists of three main components: base layers, mid-layers, and outerwear.

Base layers: Base layers are the foundation of your outfit. They should be made of moisture-wicking materials that keep you dry by drawing sweat away from your body. Merino wool is a popular choice for base layers, as it is breathable, odor-resistant, and provides excellent insulation even when wet.

Mid-layers: Mid-layers provide insulation and help regulate your body temperature. Fleece jackets, down vests, or synthetic insulated jackets are ideal mid-layer options. These garments are lightweight, packable, and provide warmth without adding bulk.

Outerwear: Your outerwear serves as a protective barrier against wind, rain, and snow. A waterproof and windproof jacket with a hood is crucial for shielding you from Iceland's unpredictable weather. Look for jackets made with breathable materials that allow moisture to escape while keeping you dry.

Remember to choose clothing that fits well and allows for freedom of movement. Avoid tight-fitting garments that can restrict your range of motion or hinder circulation.

Essential Clothing Items for Iceland Day Tours: Stay Prepared for All Conditions

When packing for Iceland day tours and Northern Lights tours, there are several essential clothing items you should include to ensure your comfort and safety. Here are some recommendations:

Waterproof pants: Investing in a pair of waterproof pants is an essential part of your rain gear, especially if you're planning on participating in activities that involve walking through wet or snowy terrains. Look for pants with reinforced knees and seat for added durability.

Thermal socks: Keeping your feet warm and dry is crucial for a comfortable day tour experience. Pack several pairs of thermal socks made of moisture-wicking materials to prevent blisters and keep your feet insulated.

Hats, scarves, and gloves: Iceland's chilly temperatures require proper head, neck, and hand protection. Bring a warm hat that covers your ears, a scarf to shield your neck from the cold winds, and gloves that provide insulation without sacrificing dexterity.

Thermal base layers: As mentioned earlier, thermal base layers made of merino wool or synthetic materials are essential for regulating your body temperature and keeping you warm throughout the day.

Insulated and waterproof boots: Invest in a pair of insulated and waterproof boots that provide excellent traction and ankle support. Look for boots with a sturdy sole and a comfortable fit to ensure stability and prevent slips on icy or uneven surfaces.

Remember to pack enough clothing for the duration of your day tour, as well as an extra set in case of unexpected weather changes or emergencies.

Choosing the Right Footwear for Different Terrains: Stay Safe and Comfortable

Choosing the right footwear for your Iceland day tour is crucial, as the terrain can vary greatly depending on the activities you have planned. Here are some recommendations for different terrains:

Hiking boots: If you're planning on hiking through Iceland's rugged landscapes, invest in a pair of sturdy hiking boots. Look for boots with ankle support, a durable sole, and waterproofing capabilities. These boots should be comfortable enough for long walks and provide excellent traction on slippery or uneven surfaces.

Waterproof sneakers: For less strenuous activities or urban exploration, a pair of waterproof sneakers can be a versatile and comfortable option. Look for sneakers with a waterproof membrane and a grippy outsole for traction.

Crampons: If you're planning on exploring glaciers or walking on icy surfaces, consider bringing crampons. These traction devices can be easily attached to your boots and provide additional grip and stability on slippery terrain.

Remember to break in your footwear before your trip to avoid blisters or discomfort during your day tours. It's also a good idea to bring a spare pair of shoes in case your primary footwear gets wet or damaged.

Accessories to Consider for Iceland Day Tours and Northern Lights Tours: Enhance Your Comfort and Protection

In addition to your clothing choices, accessories play a crucial role in keeping you warm and comfortable during Iceland day tours. Here are some accessories to consider:

Neck gaiter or buff: A neck gaiter or buff is a versatile accessory that can be worn as a scarf, a headband, or a face covering. It provides additional warmth and protection against wind and cold temperatures.

Sunglasses: Iceland's landscapes are known for their stunning beauty, but they can also be incredibly bright. Don't forget to pack a pair of sunglasses with UV protection to shield your eyes from the sun's glare and harmful rays.

Backpack: A backpack is an essential accessory for carrying extra layers, snacks, water, and other essentials during your day tours. Look for a backpack with comfortable shoulder straps and enough capacity to hold all your belongings.

Hand warmers: If you tend to get cold hands, consider bringing hand warmers to provide extra warmth and comfort. These small packets can be easily activated and tucked into your gloves or pockets for instant heat.

Packing tips for dressing for Iceland day tours

Efficient packing is essential when it comes to dressing for Iceland day tours. Here are some tips to help you maximize space and stay organized:

Roll your clothing: Rolling your clothing instead of folding it can save space and minimize wrinkles. This technique also allows you to easily see and access each item in your luggage.

Use packing cubes: Packing cubes are a great investment for keeping your clothing organized and compact. They allow you to separate different types of clothing and maximize space in your suitcase or backpack.

Pack versatile clothing: Opt for clothing items that can be easily mixed and matched to create multiple outfits. This will help you pack lighter and provide more options during your day tours.

Consider laundry options: If you're planning an extended stay in Iceland, consider staying at accommodations that offer laundry facilities. This will allow you to pack fewer clothes and rewear items as needed.

Final tips for dressing for Iceland day tours

Dressing appropriately for an Iceland day trip is essential for both comfort and safety. By understanding the climate, layering your clothing, and investing in the right gear, you can fully enjoy the country's breathtaking beauty without compromising your experience.

Remember to pack clothing items suitable for layering, including base layers, mid-layers, and outerwear. Choose footwear that is appropriate for the terrain you'll be exploring, and don't forget to bring essential accessories like hats, scarves, and gloves.

Efficient packing techniques, such as rolling your clothing and using packing cubes, can help you maximize space and stay organized. Consider investing in reputable clothing brands known for their durability and performance.

By following these tips and being well-prepared, you can embark on your Iceland day tours with confidence, knowing that you're dressed appropriately for whatever Mother Nature throws your way. So pack your bags, layer up, and get ready to explore Iceland's breathtaking landscapes in style and comfort.

Choosing the Right Iceland Tour for You

With so many tour options available, choosing the right Iceland tour can seem overwhelming. However, by considering your interests, preferences, and travel style, you can find the perfect tour that suits you.

First, think about what you want to experience in Iceland. Are you more interested in adventure activities, nature exploration, or cultural immersion? This will help you narrow down your options and choose a tour that focuses on your preferred aspects.

Next, consider the duration of the tour. Iceland offers both short tours, ranging from a few days to a week, and longer tours that can last up to two weeks or more. Think about how much time you have available and how much you want to see and do during your trip.

Another important factor to consider is your fitness level and physical capabilities. Some tours involve strenuous activities like hiking or ice climbing, while others are more relaxed and suitable for all fitness levels. Be sure to choose a tour that matches your physical abilities to ensure a comfortable and enjoyable experience.

Lastly, consider your budget. Iceland can be an expensive destination, so it's important to choose a tour that fits within your budget. Look for tours that include accommodations, meals, and activities, as this can help you better estimate the overall cost of your trip.

Planning Your Iceland Itinerary

When planning your Iceland itinerary, it's important to consider the time of year and the specific attractions and activities you want to experience. Iceland experiences distinct seasons, each offering its own unique charm.

If witnessing the Northern Lights is a priority for you, consider visiting Iceland in the winter months, from September to April. The long nights and clear skies provide optimal conditions for viewing this natural phenomenon. However, keep in mind that winter weather can be unpredictable, so be prepared for possible flight delays or road closures.

For those who prefer milder weather and longer days, the summer months, from May to August, are ideal. During this time, you'll have more daylight hours to explore and enjoy outdoor activities. The landscapes are also lush and vibrant, making it a great time for hiking and sightseeing.

When creating your itinerary, be sure to include the must-see attractions such as the Golden Circle, the Blue Lagoon, and the Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon. Additionally, consider visiting lesser-known spots that offer a more off-the-beaten-path experience. Iceland is full of hidden gems waiting to be discovered.

Why visit Iceland?

Iceland offers a unique and unparalleled experience for travelers. Its pristine landscapes, untouched by human development, make it a paradise for nature enthusiasts. The country is known for its volcanoes, geysers, and hot springs, making it a geothermal wonderland. Iceland is a world renowned location for viewing the Northern Lights. The Icelandic people are warm and welcoming, and their rich cultural heritage adds another layer of charm to the overall experience. Whether you're an adventure seeker or a lover of tranquility, Iceland has something to offer.

Iceland is also known for its commitment to sustainability and eco-friendly practices. The country's renewable energy sources, such as geothermal and hydroelectric power, make it an inspiring example of environmental consciousness. By visiting Iceland, you can support these efforts and contribute to the preservation of this unique ecosystem.

Reset password, sea kayaking, one of the most exhilarating ways to experience antarctica, the arctic and beyond..

Sea kayaking holidays in the humbling wilderness of  Antarctica ,  the Arctic , and some of the world’s most biodiverse regions, are guaranteed to stir your soul. Paddle between brash ice and icebergs of all shapes and sizes, absorbing the majestic scenery as it unfolds before you.

In Antarctica, keep your camera on-hand for unforgettable encounters with penguins, seals and whales, and occasionally leopard seals or orcas. In the Arctic, prepare to  paddle under nesting bird colonies, past massive glaciers and around large iceberg.

Led by  experienced guides , you and your small group of like-minded adventurers will paddle between ice floes, brash ice and icebergs of all shapes and sizes. Paddling is one of the best ways to access and intimately explore the beautiful coastlines we visit and therefore make the most of your time in the wild and remote  destinations we visit .

‘Getting out amongst it’ is our philosophy, and that is exactly what we do. Weather permitting, the sea kayaking activity is normally available anytime the other expeditioners go out. Rather than travelling large distances, our aim is to ensure you see as much as possible. We paddle between 5 to 15 kilometres (2 to 4 hours) per outing, often taking a snack and a flask of hot chocolate to enjoy on our excursion.

Each small group of kayakers (up to 10 per guide) will have their own intimate exploration of the small hidden bays and coasts that are inaccessible to Zodiacs. Of course, we also make time for your own shore excursions and wildlife encounters.

The elements play an important role in our sea kayaking program. It is important that you have an adventurous attitude and understand that the weather can impact our kayaking time.

For all of our trips, you must be active in the outdoors and have an adventurous spirit. The level of experience differs slightly depending on the region you are visiting.

For most temperate and polar you should be an intermediate paddler. In South Georgia however, conditions can be more varied and you require solid paddling experience in ocean swell and wind.

For our tropical trips some prior paddling experience is needed. We may encounter wind on these trips, however the water is fairly protected.

You do not need to be an expert or know how to roll. However, you must be able to swim and you should have experience in a wet exit and assisted re-entry. You should also be proficient at putting on a spray skirt by yourself and be comfortable paddling on seas with up to half a metre swell. It is also important that you gain some practice getting into a kayak from a pier, wharf, or deep shoreline where you can’t step into the kayak from standing position. You can easily practice all of this at home, plus paddling in a variety of weather conditions, before your trip.

What about beginners up to the challenge?

Our guides do not offer instructional classes for beginners. Therefore, the sea kayaking option is unsuitable for complete novices. However, there is often ample time to gain the required experience before you depart. We may be able to recommend a reputable sea kayak operator in your area for some tuition prior to the trip.

Your guide will assess your ability on the initial paddle, and if you have insufficient experience, he or she reserves the right to restrict your participation in rougher conditions.

You should be fit enough to paddle for up to three hours and climb between moving Zodiacs on the water. Regular exercise is recommended, because the fitter you are the more you will enjoy the experience. The more paddles you can do before the trip, the better. We recommend at least three outings prior to your voyage.

Polar regions

During summer the air temperature in the Antarctic Peninsula, Greenland and Spitsbergen are generally above freezing but can range from -4°C to +5°C / 24.8°F to 41°F. The water temperature in the polar regions is close to freezing and winds sweep off the glaciers, making paddling a chilling experience. In South Georgia, there are stronger winds and swells than in Antarctica. Scotland, Iceland, Norwegian coasts are warmer with water temperatures of around 12 °C/ 53.6°F.

Temperate regions

The northern waters are warmer than the polar regions but water temperatures of around 12 °C/ 53.6°F mean you may opt to wear your paddle jacket on a warm, sunny day or our dry suits on a cool day. Surf landings are not likely, but you must be capable of paddling in a small swell or wind chop, with winds up to 20 knots. With that being said, we will not paddle if wind conditions are too strong and there is no sheltered area for paddling.

Tropical regions

In Costa Rica and Panama, April is the end of the dry season. The shoulder season begins in May, bringing increased humidity. Afternoon rain showers are possible in May with temperatures ranging from 26-36 °C (80- 96 °F). Winds are generally light at this time of year. The water temperature ranges from 27 -29 °C. Surf landings are not likely, but be prepared to paddle in a small swell or wind chop, with winds up to 15 knots. Again, we will not paddle if wind conditions are too strong and there is no sheltered area for paddling.

The Sea Kayaking activity is available for an additional surcharge and includes guided excursions and kayaking equipment. Fares for this activity start from US$900, AU$1,250, £460 or €550.

Prices are indicative only and are variable. They are calculated based on the days of voyage, ability to carry out the activity and exchange rates.

Our guide to paddler ratio is 1:10 and we provide an accompanying safety Zodiac. There are 26 places available in Antarctica and tropical voyages, 20 in temperate regions, South Georgia and all Arctic trips except in Franz Josef Land where the maximum is 16 kayakers.

Kayakers must be 14 or over.

Sea kayaking is offered in place of regular shore excursions. We aim to paddle as often as possible. Depending on the voyage, we generally aim to paddle twice per day.

We will give you a drybag for extra clothing, binoculars and anything that needs to be kept dry. You should also carry a water bottle. We recommend bringing a waterproof camera or phone, or ensuring you have a good quality waterproof case.

If the weather changes during our outing we will head back to the ship and perhaps join a shore excursion. The ship’s captain, expedition leader and kayak guide always maintain close contact to ensure a safe paddling experience. We do not attempt to paddle too far away from the ship. The emphasis is on experiencing the destination rather than travelling long distances.

The kayaks are made with a hard plastic and are easily paddled in swell and conducting shore landings, and through small patches of brash ice. We manoeuvre around the larger ice chunks and floes.

Kayaking in the poles offers a unique wildlife viewing experience. In Antarctica, we have many opportunities to encounter penguins, seals and whales, and occasionally we may even spot leopard seals or orcas. In the Arctic, we’ll paddle under nesting bird colonies, past massive glaciers and around large icebergs, however we maintain a safe distance from polar bears and walruses. Our guides carry rifles and flare guns in the Arctic to ensure your safety against polar bears.

Kayakers in wild temperate regions will have a unique wildlife experience, with possible encounters with seals and basking sharks. You will have the opportunity to view some of the largest sea bird colonies in the northern hemisphere.

The superb wildlife-viewing opportunities are endless in the astonishingly biodiverse nature reserves we visit. Kayaks offer a unique opportunity to view marine and land mammals, coral reefs, tropical fish, sea birds and an astonishing range of rainforest birds. We will bring our snorkelling gear with us during our paddles and take advantage of any opportunities to view marine life up close.

In the unlikely event of a capsize, your experienced guide will assist by righting the kayak, stabilising it then pumping it out. Paddlers will re-enter with the guide’s help, or with a support Zodiac. With drysuits and warm clothing underneath you will be comfortable in cold water for up to half an hour. Note that the kayaks have separate compartments with bulkheads, which means they will float after a capsize.

No. Each kayaking place is for one person only. Passengers are unable to share a kayaking place as we customise the kayaks and dry suits for each individual kayaker at the beginning of each voyage.

If you are looking for something a little different and exciting, try this northern lights tour by ATV!

You will join a small and intimate group of fellow Aurora Borealis hunters to ride deep into the Icelandic countryside in search of places free from light pollution with clear skies to view this solar wind phenomenon.

An experienced tour guide will use meteorological forecasts, their local knowledge, and intuition to find the best locations and also answer any questions you may have about the Northern Lights.

While seeking the light, you will have the chance to sample delicious Icelandic chocolate while you huddle under the warm blanket provided for your comfort during the cold Icelandic night.

Once you’ve found the world’s greatest light show, don’t worry if your camera can’t capture all the dramatic patterns and shapes dancing overhead.

You will be offered the use of a camera capable of picking out the spectacular variations of colored light in the sky.

If you don’t see the Northern Lights during your tour, you will be offered another opportunity to seek the light free of charge, and if for any reason you can’t make the tour, free cancellation is permitted up to 24 hours before the activity begins.

5. Northern Lights Boat Cruise From Reykjavik

  • Departure Point: Hlésgata, 101 Reykjavik Harbor
  • Includes : Expert guide, 2-hour cruise, Wi-Fi, onboard toilets, and warm flotation overalls

After meeting at Reykjavik Harbor, experience a 2-hour cruise into the North Atlantic Ocean in search of an ideal location from which to observe and photograph the Northern Lights.

Here you will be far from the noise and light pollution of the city. View the city from the sea while you enjoy refreshments and snacks purchased from a heated indoor bar,

Be sure to dress in the warm flotation overalls provided and step out onto the deck to enjoy the natural lightshow outside.

The Free Wi-Fi is great for uploading your amazing shots of dancing shapes and colors in the night sky onto your Instagram account.

If you get tired, there are seats both inside the cabin and out on the deck. Because the Aurora Borealis is a natural phenomenon, it is always possible that you won’t see the lights on any particular night. But don’t worry.

If you don’t see the Northern Lights on your first cruise, you will be offered the opportunity to try again another night. In the event that you cannot make the tour, free cancellation is permitted up to 24 hours before the cruise begins.

6.  3-Hour Northern Lights Tour From Akureyri

  • Departure Point : Pick up from hotels and guest houses
  • Includes : Knowledgeable guide, 3-hour minibus , Icelandic pastries, hot cocoa, and blankets

A small minibus picks you up from your guesthouse or hotel to join an intimate group of 17 other Northern Lights hunters and transports you out of the city.

Free from its noise and light pollution, deep into the remote and peaceful countryside of Iceland you can truly enjoy the show.

Snuggle under the blankets provided and enjoy traditional Icelandic pastries and hot cocoa while your expert guide strives to locate the best position to view the spectacular natural light display.

With 4 hours to spend, your minibus will travel deeper into the countryside than any other tour and spend longer searching for the lights. Don’t worry if you don’t see the Northern Lights on your first attempt.

This eager tour operator is determined that you will get to see the world’s most famous display of colors and shapes in the sky, so you will be offered a second and even a third opportunity to search with no extra charge.

If you still don’t see the Aurora Borealis after three attempts, you will receive a voucher entitling you to another trip at a future time. Free cancellations are offered up to 24 hours before the activity starts.

7. 4-Day Blue Ice Cave and Northern Lights Tour From Reykjavik

  • Departure Point: Pick up service from Reykjavik
  • Departure Time : 8 AM
  • Duration : 4 days
  • Includes : Expert guide, 3 nights hotel stay and breakfast, visits to 3 waterfalls, 2 geysers, a glacial lagoon, hike along a glacier, hunt for the Northern Lights, and explore inside an ice cave.

If you are dedicated to seeing the Northern Lights but also want to experience some of the other unique natural phenomena around Iceland, this is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity to explore everything that Iceland has to offer.

Watch a geyser in action, view beautiful waterfalls, explore inside an ice cave, hike along a glacier, and observe the Aurora Borealis.

On the first day of your eventful tour, you will travel to southwestern Iceland and visit Geysir, the waterfall at Gullfoss, and Thingvellir National Park.

The geyser at Geysir is the most famous in the world, and the English word “geyser” is derived from its place name.

You will also see Strokkur geyser nearby, which sprays hot water up to 98 feet into the sky every few minutes, much more frequently than its more famous neighbor. After an action-packed day, relax at a hotel in Hvolsvöllur.

On the second day, you will move on to southern Iceland and visit Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss waterfalls. Following that, experience a hike across a glacier at Solheimajökull and marvel at the icy landscape of this sublime natural landmark.

Next, you will see the black sand beach at Reynisfjara before visiting Skaftafell Nature Reserve. Before heading back to the hotel, your expert guide will take you on a night hunt for the highlight of the trip—the Aurora Borealis.

On the third day, you will begin with an unforgettable trek inside a spectacular ice cave. Following that, you will visit  Jökulsarlon glacial lagoon.

The icebergs floating in the blue waters will astound you, and if the place looks familiar, that’s because it was used as a setting in many movies, including A View to a Kill , Die Another Day , Batman Begins , Beowulf and Grendel , and Lara Croft Tomb Raider .

Finally, you will return to Reykjavik filled with a wealth of memories.

Iceland Travel Guide

There are many reasons the Land of Fire and Ice has seen an explosion in tourism since 2019. Not only can you see the Northern Lights, active volcanoes, glaciers, and puffins, you can also relax in a geothermal spa and even bake bread inside a pot buried underground.

What you decide to do in this fascinating country is your choice, but you should take the time to do some research before you go. This guide is here to inform you where you can go, what you can do, and how you can get there, because we want you to have the best vacation of your life in Iceland.

Airports & Entry

Most visitors to Iceland arrive at Keflavik International Airport (KEF). Although Iceland only has a population of 359 thousand people, in 2018 this busy airport handled 9.8 million passengers. Despite the number of visitors, there is only one terminal. You will find the check-in times minimal, with an average 20-minute waiting time at the security check.

Inside the terminal, you will find everything clearly signposted in English. Charging points for cellphones and laptops are provided in the waiting area along with free Wi-Fi.

Strollers are provided for children, and there is a dedicated kids’ play area. The usual selection of food outlets and shops are found on the upper floor of the main building. Manned information stands are located throughout the airport.

It is 30 miles from the airport to Reykjavik, the capital city. The speed limit is 55 mph, but the drive usually takes 50 minutes due to traffic. Shuttle bus services link KEF to the city, which you can book in advance online or pay for at the airport.

Some hotels offer airport collection, and you should ask about that when you book your room. You can, of course, jump in a taxi at the airport, but it will be extremely expensive compared to the airport bus service. Car rental is available at the airport, but it is advisable to book in advance.

Planning Tips

With so many exciting things to do and see in Iceland, you’re guaranteed to have a great holiday. However, things do not always go to plan, so here are 5 tips to help you make the most of your visit.

Tip #1: If you want to see the Aurora Borealis, go between September and March

It’s easier to view the Northern Lights when the sky is at its darkest. In Iceland, the nights are especially long between September and March, but the sky doesn’t grow dark enough to view this magical phenomenon during the summer months. However, do not plan a visit around a full moon, because its light can dampen the impact of this natural light display. The best days to go are around the time of a new moon.

Tip #2: Check out the SolarHam website

If you are especially interested in the Aurora Borealis and want to earn your Geek Badge, check out the SolarHam website. This techy site provides a 3-day geomagnetic forecast, which is useful for aurora hunters to select the best time to view the Northern Lights. The same site provides a satellite map of where the natural light show is right now, so you can look up if you’re near.

Tip #3: Take your time to enjoy all the attractions of Iceland

There’s so much to see in Iceland, it would be a crime not to explore and experience as much as you are able in the time you have. While you are there, do not miss the opportunity to see so many unforgettable natural phenomena in one place. There is nowhere else on the planet where you can see active volcanoes, glaciers, and or ice caves , all in one national park. For an unforgettable experience be sure to take a snowmobile tour , ATV tour of the national park!

Tip #4: Book everything in advance, especially in winter

Tourism is on the rise in Iceland, and hotel rooms, tours, and attractions get fully-booked ahead of time.  Don’t miss out on seeing the Northern Lights from the best vantage point possible because all the tours were booked-up before you arrived. Many tours like the ones detailed above offer a 24-hour-in-advance free cancellation, so you take no financial risk booking. Ask about free cancellation when buying your ticket. If you are interested in a horseback riding tour be sure to book it at least a few months in advance as they are very popular!

Tip #5: Impress your friends with quintessentially Icelandic souvenirs

The budget chain store Bonus stocks many unique Icelandic products, such as Omnom chocolate, Icelandic specialty teas, herbal sea salt blends, and licorice mixed with chocolate. At Bonus, you can pick up great, inexpensive gifts for your friends! Vinbuoin, the state-run liquor store, sells a fine selection of renowned Icelandic spirits, including Iceland’s signature tipple, Brennivin.

And if you like to sort through other folks’ debris for the hidden treasures, a special weekend market is held at Kolaportio in downtown Reykjavik where Icelanders come to sell off their unwanted goods when moving to a new house. You could find anything!

Restaurants & Eating Out

Because of Iceland’s geographical position and climate, vegetables and grains are rare in traditional foods, and many famous dishes focus on preserved seafood or meat. Also, food was scarce in yesteryears, so every part of an animal or fish was eaten. You’ll find many traditional meals involve fish or meat that is salted, smoked, dried, or fermented. Watch out for such culinary delights as baked sheep’s head and fermented shark.

Seafood restaurants are common throughout Iceland, and all serve “fish of the day”, which is usually salmon, monkfish, haddock, or cod. However, if you wish, you can seek out some of the more exotic options. Humar is a kind of lobster caught off the south coast of Iceland, renowned for its tender and tasty flesh.

It is served fried, baked or grilled, though it can also be found as a pizza topping! Plokkfishkur is a fish stew, made to the chef’s specific recipe but usually combining white fish with onions, potatoes, milk, and flour. Harofiskur is a snack you can buy in any grocery store. It is dried stockfish, eaten with butter or straight out of a bag.

Because it is difficult to grow wheat in Iceland, there are many traditional varieties of rye bread, like flatkaka, baked in thin disks on hot stones. One variety of rye bread you should try is rugbrauo, a sweet-tasting, dark bread.

The reason rugbrauo is so interesting for visitors to Iceland is that a common baking technique is to bury a dough-filled pot near one of the many hot springs, such as Fontana Hot Springs, and use geothermal heat to bake the bread. Rugbrauo baked that way is also called hyerabrauo (hot-spring bread).

Icelanders don’t only eat fish and rye bread. Sheep are the most common livestock in Iceland, so lamb is often on the menu. Sheep wander freely around the countryside, eating seaweed, grass, and berries, which tends to make lamb tender with a mild flavor.

Smoked lamb is called hangikjöt and is often served boiled during the winter holidays. Also watch out for varieties of meat you won’t see in most other countries, like puffin, horse, and whale. Despite international concern over puffins and whales, they are still commonly consumed in Iceland.

A meal on vacation isn’t complete without dessert. Popular local sweets include rugbrauosis (rye bread ice cream), pönnukökur (Icelandic pancakes), and snuour (cinnamon bread covered in caramel or chocolate). A dairy product unique to Iceland is skyr.

It is a kind of sour milk cheese eaten like yogurt and often sweetened and flavored with fruit or vanilla.

Nightlife & Entertainment

With long, cold nights throughout the winter, it’s no surprise Icelanders love their nightlife, and much of it is centered where most of the people live—Reykjavik. Because the capital is so small, most of the clubs and bars are within walking distance of one another. In fact, many are along one street, Laugavegur, the commercial artery of downtown.

Most social venues are informal and entrance fees rare. When Icelanders go out for the night, they tend to begin late, and many clubs and bars don’t get busy until after midnight. This is in part because alcohol in bars is expensive, so locals drink at home before setting out.

Many clubs and bars stay open as late as 5 am. Cocktail bars are a recent addition to Iceland’s nightlife, but with the booming tourist trade, they are rapidly expanding.

And don’t worry too much about safety at night. In 2019, the Institute for Economics and Peace in Sydney ranked Iceland the most peaceful nation on Earth for the 12 th year running. Crime rates in Reykjavik are probably lower than anywhere you have ever lived.

Getting Around

Iceland is a small country covering an area slightly smaller than Kentucky. If you wanted to drive from Reykjavik on the west coast to Faskruosfjorour on the east coast, the 425 miles route would take only 8½ hours.

However, because of its small population outside of the capital, you cannot rely on public transport to go sightseeing around the country or reach the best place to view the northern lights. This leaves you with two options: hiring a car or booking a coach tour, like the 3-day Golden Circle tour detailed above.

Within the capital and its immediate area, you do have more options: bus, taxi, bicycle, or walk. The public bus service is inexpensive and efficient, and you can ask for help to find the right bus from your hotel reception. Given that Reykjavik is so small a city, taxis are affordable.

If you want a little exercise, bicycle rentals are available in many hotels, and the city is crisscrossed by dedicated bicycle paths. If you decide to walk, make sure you wrap up well. The weather can deteriorate rapidly in Iceland.

Accommodations

Over the past few years, Iceland has seen a huge expansion in tourism. With a 378% increase since 2010, hotel rooms fill up quickly. Through Christmas and summer, hotels are usually fully booked. Since 228 of Iceland’s 359 thousand citizens live within the capital and its immediate hinterland, settlements throughout the rest of Iceland are small and rooms for visitors limited. Most hotels are in the capital.

You will probably find it most convenient to stay in Reykjavik. You will find a broad range of hotels there, it is near the airport, and many of the attractions along with most of the nightlife are found there or nearby. Many organized tours to other parts of Iceland and major tourist attractions set out from Reykjavik, such as most of the Northern Lights tours detailed above.

Within the downtown and central area of Reykjavik you will find a choice of luxury hotels, like the Hotel Borg downtown and The Icelandair Hotel Marina, overlooking the harbor. If you head a little more out of the center, you’ll find more affordable hostels, such as The Capital Inn and Bus Hostel Reykjavik .

There are some popular hotels outside of the capital near to tourist attractions, such as Hotel Skaftafell in the Vatnajökull National Park, which offers spectacular views of Iceland’s largest mountain, or Skyrhusid Guesthouse near Lake Jökulsarion in the south. Wherever you decide to stay, the important thing is to book in advance. If you don’t, you will miss out on the best rooms.

Iceland is not the place to go if you want year-round sunshine and dry weather. In fact, on 22 nd December there are only 4 hours of daylight, because that is the shortest day. That’s great if you want to see the Aurora Borealis, since it can only be seen during dark nights, but not so good for other sightseeing. In contrast, the longest day boasts 21 hours of daylight, 21 st June.

The “warm” summer period covers June, July, and August, with an average daily high of 55 0 F and a low of 46 0 F. Yes, 55 0 F is their summer high! Summers are short and cloudy. The winter period covers November through March, two months longer than summer, and is cold, wet, windy, and overcast, with frequent snow. The average daily high drops to 35 0 F in January with a low of 27 0 F.

If your main interest is the Northern Lights, you should go anytime September through March, because the sky is dark enough to view those fantastic electromagnetic displays. If the Aurora Borealis does not interest you, you’ll get the warmest weather and longer days from the end of June to mid-August.

Attractions

The Aurora Borealis is not the only unique and fascinating attraction in Iceland. The Land of Fire and Ice is the best place in the world to see and experience the majesty and power of two extremes in Nature: glaciers and volcanoes. These attractions are all part of what is called the “Golden Circle”. Taking a day tour of the Golden Circle with a guide is a great way to take in all of the best sights.

12 miles from KEF is the world-famous Blue Lagoon geothermal spa. Here you can laze in pools of hot, milky blue water heated by a lava flow. Nearby stands the Svartsengi Geothermal Power Plant, which uses superheated water from the lava flow to generate electricity and also provide heat for a municipal water heating system.

There are geothermal spas like the Blu Lagoon throughout Iceland, so wherever you choose to stay, you can find one near you and experience the power of molten rock.

If ice and Arctic landscapes interest you, head 140 miles east from Reykjavik to Vatnajökull National Park , which is centered on Vatnajökull glacier and the surrounding beautiful landscape. This park covers 14% of Iceland and is filled with glacial rivers and active volcanoes.

Vatnajökull glacier empties into the glacial lake of Jökulsarion in the south, where you can see 100-feet-tall icebergs freshly broken away from the glacier. Jökulsarion served as a setting in several major Hollywood movies. On your drive back to Reykjavik, you can see two beautiful waterfalls around Skogar. The first, Skogafoss, is an impressive waterfall and a popular destination for Icelandic day-trippers.

18 miles west of Skogafoss is picturesque Seljalandsfoss waterfall . A path allows sightseers to pass behind the curtain of water as it falls into the crystal-clear plunge pool.

If it’s man-made cultural and historical attractions you seek, you’ll find plenty to do and see around Reykjavik. The capital’s earliest history stretches back to 874, but it only became a true city in 1785.

Perhaps one of the most unique attractions is seeing the continental plates splitting apart at Silfra. Here the North American and Eurasian plates are separating. If you are daring you can take a snorkel tour of Silfra and see it for yourself!

Around Reykjavik, you’ll find an interesting assortment of museums and tourist attractions, like the National Museum of Iceland and the Reykjavik Maritime Museum.

A famous landmark visitors flock to see is the Hallgrimskirkja Church, which is the largest church in Iceland. This unique structure was designed by a local architect to resemble the glaciers and mountains of Iceland.

We did a 5-day tour which included the south coast tour, the Golden Circle tour, northern lights tour, Flyover experience, Blue Lagoon and Reykjavík city walk. This was a trip I have wanted to do for a while and it didn't disappoint. Nordic Visitor gave me advice on the best month to visit and they were spot on. The weather was good, we were lucky enough to see the northern lights and the tours were not too busy. The tour guides were excellent, full of information and they all seem to love their jobs. This trip was fantastic from start to finish. Thank you Nordic Visitor.

1. WHAT IS A MULTI-DAY TOUR?

A multi-day tour is a travel package that includes all of your accommodation, transportation and excursions in Iceland.

Rather than booking each hotel, transfer and day tour separately, you can leave all the organising to your dedicated travel consultant. They are based in Reykjavík and will arrange everything on your behalf.

The great thing about multi-day vacation packages is that they combine independent travel with the benefit of escorted day trips. This is a fantastic option if you'd like to learn from expert guides by joining excursions, but also want some free time and flexibility.

2. IS ICELAND SAFE TO VISIT?

Yes, Iceland is one of the world’s safest countries, with low levels of crime and road accidents. Add first-rate emergency services and health care systems, and you have a safe destination in Northern Europe.

Plus, with our 24/7 helpline, there is always someone available to assist you if anything unexpected crops up during your trip. We also recommend purchasing travel insurance that will cover you for local healthcare in case you need it.

3. HOW MANY DAYS DO YOU NEED TO TOUR ICELAND?

You can enjoy a quick introduction to this beautiful country in as few as 4 or 5 days in Iceland . That said, for a more immersive experience, we recommend spending 1 week or more here.

There’s so much to see that you won’t want to miss out on Iceland’s many attractions and experiences. For instance, you could visit the natural wonders of the Golden Circle, the Blue Lagoon , and the glacier lakes on Iceland’s south coast.

The pace you travel also matters, as you do not want to feel rushed during your visit. That’s why our multi-day packages have been crafted and tested by our local travel specialists to ensure a fulfilling visit every time.

Check out the different trip options to see what suits you best. Plus, find out more in this blog on how many days you need in Iceland .

The must-do Iceland tours for you depend on what you’d like to see and how you’d like to experience the country. Most excursions on your multi-day tour will depart from Reykjavík or Akureyri. From here, head into the countryside where you’ll enjoy remarkable views at every turn.

5. WHAT IS THE GOLDEN CIRCLE TOUR IN ICELAND?

The Golden Circle is a popular sightseeing route in South Iceland. The “circle” is a 230-kilometre (140-mile) loop that begins and ends in Reykjavík.

The route’s top attractions include Gulfoss waterfall, the Geysir geothermal area and Þingvellir National Park. Happily, a day trip from Reykjavík will give you plenty of time to see all three.

6. CAN YOU TOUR GLACIERS IN SUMMER?

Absolutely! Although Iceland’s summer weather can be mild, you’ll find glaciers here year-round. So prepare to be enchanted by these natural wonders, whether they’re blanketed in snow or their crevasses and striking ice formations are exposed.

During the summer season – from May to September – you can experience the country’s glaciers for yourself on these excursions:

  • • Hiking on Sólheimajökull and Svínafellsjökull glaciers
  • • Journeying inside Langjökull glacier on the “Into the Glacier” tour
  • • Taking a boat trip or kayaking on a glacier lagoon
  • • Flying over Iceland’s glaciers and volcanoes on a helicopter ride

If you’re keen to try ice caving in Iceland, then it’s best to visit from November to March . This is because the ice caves melt during the summer months, before reforming in winter.

Why not ask your dedicated travel consultant about adding one of these thrilling outings to your Iceland summer tour package ? Plus, discover more ways to experience Iceland’s glaciers and read this guide to Iceland in summer to find out more.

7. WHERE SHOULD I GO IN ICELAND?

Iceland is brimming with jaw-dropping landscapes, popular attractions and hidden gems. And while this makes the Land of Fire and Ice an exciting place to visit, it can leave you spoiled for choice when deciding where to go.

These are some of the best places to go in Iceland to get you started:

  • • Reykjavík
  • • Blue Lagoon
  • • Golden Circle route
  • • Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon
  • • Lake Mývatn
  • • Akureyri
  • • Vík
  • • Snæfellsnes
  • • Vatnajökull National Park

And to find out what to expect in each of Iceland’s stunning regions, check out this complete guide to Iceland travel .

8. IS IT BETTER TO BOOK TOURS IN ICELAND?

Yes, it’s best to book any Iceland day tours well in advance of your trip.

Making arrangements before you go means that you won’t miss out if your preferred excursions are full once you arrive. Plus, if you travel with Nordic Visitor, you’ll have your own local travel expert who’ll make all your tour reservations on your behalf as part of a complete package. This way you can have a completely hassle-free trip.

There are also other ways to explore Iceland. For example, you could opt for a guided small group trip , travelling with up to 16 like-minded adventurers. Or if you like doing your own thing, consider a privately guided package or a self-drive tour of Iceland .

9. WHEN IS THE BEST TIME OF YEAR TO GO TO ICELAND?

Iceland is stunning all year round, so the best time to visit depends on what you’d like to see and do on your trip.

Summer in Iceland is from May to September. And this is the time to travel if you’d like to enjoy mild temperatures and take advantage of long daylight hours.

Not only is the scenery at its most lush during summer, but there are also more wildlife-watching opportunities. Plus, this time of year is perfect for joining locals in their tradition of swimming in one of Reykjavík’s geothermal pools, followed by ice cream.

If you time your visit for the height of summer – June , July and August – you’ll get to experience the midnight sun . This natural phenomenon is when it stays light late into the night. So you’ll find this is a great time to come to Iceland if you want to maximise your time outdoors, soaking up the scenery.

On the other hand, we recommend travelling in winter if you’re seeking the northern lights. This is because the Icelandic winter – October to March – brings the best aurora-spotting conditions.

The dark skies at this time of year make it much easier to see the striking lights of the aurora. And the long nights provide you with more opportunities to glimpse the northern lights.

It’s not all about the aurora borealis though. The winter season is also ideal for soaking up the festive atmosphere on a Christmas or New Year trip to Iceland . Plus, the country’s rugged landscapes look just as jaw-dropping dusted in snow as they do in summer.

Read this complete guide to the best time to visit Iceland for more advice about when you should travel.

10. WHEN CAN YOU SEE THE NORTHERN LIGHTS IN ICELAND?

The winter months – from October to March – are the best time of year to see the northern lights in Iceland.

This is because the nights are at their darkest and longest in winter. Indeed, winter’s dark skies are key to spotting the aurora, as the dancing lights are easily seen against the backdrop of night.

The aurora borealis is a natural phenomenon. So while sightings can’t be guaranteed, you’ll have a better chance of glimpsing the northern lights when you join an expert-led outing.

Choose a multi-day tour in winter, and you could enjoy a guided aurora hunt as part of your trip. You can also take a look at this full range of Iceland northern lights tour packages if you’d like to make seeing them the focus of your winter getaway.

Learn more about the best time and place to see the northern lights in Iceland in this blog. And check out this handy aurora borealis travel guide for hints and tips, such as how to photograph this incredible spectacle.

11. CAN I CHOOSE THE ARRIVAL DATE?

Yes, you can select the start date that suits you from a variety of itineraries that let you travel year-round in Iceland.

Make the most of summer’s better weather and longer daylight hours by choosing a tour from May to September. Or if you’d rather experience Iceland in winter, opt for start dates between October and April.

Once you’ve decided whether you’d like to travel in summer or winter, simply select the departure that works for you. You’ll find up-to-date availability for the tour you’re interested in on its online calendar.

12. CAN I CUSTOMISE MY ICELAND TOUR?

Absolutely, you can personalise your itinerary by choosing from a variety of optional activities. For example, you can pick from excursions including food tours of Reykjavík, super jeep outings and wildlife-watching boat trips.

You could also opt to extend your stay in Iceland with extra nights in Reykjavík at the start or end of your trip. This is ideal if you would like more time to explore the city’s cultural highlights independently.

If you have something specific in mind for your trip, don’t hesitate to contact us and a dedicated travel consultant will help plan your dream adventure.

13. WHEN SHOULD I BOOK MY FLIGHTS?

We recommend checking what flights are available before booking your trip. That said, it’s best to hold off on purchasing them until your travel consultant has confirmed your tour package.

Waiting until your tour is finalised will let you pick flights that suit your itinerary. Plus, it will give you the opportunity to ask any questions you might have about the arrangements for your arrival or departure.

14. WHAT SHOULD I PACK FOR ICELAND?

The weather in Iceland is known for being changeable, so even if you’re travelling in summer, it’s best to be prepared for all conditions.

We always recommend packing warm layers and waterproofs. This way, come rain or shine, you’ll be comfortable when you’re out and about soaking up Iceland’s natural beauty.

It’s good to know that on some of your guided excursions in nature, a short walk may be the best way to make the most of your visit. So, as well as weatherproof layers, be sure to bring sturdy walking boots or shoes.

If you’ve chosen an excursion that requires special equipment, then this will be provided. For example, on a guided glacier hike you’ll be given, and taught how to use, crampons and an ice axe. Plus, your personal itinerary will detail any essential items needed for each activity on your trip.

Here is an all-season Iceland packing list for your multi-day tour:

  • Walking boots or shoes with good grip
  • Waterproof jacket and trousers
  • Insulated jacket
  • Woollen or fleece jumpers
  • Seljalandsfoss waterfall
  • Thermal base layers
  • Warm hat, scarf and gloves
  • Warm hiking socks
  • Quick-drying travel towel

The Best Iceland Tours

With terrain shaped by volcanic eruptions and shifting tectonic plates and the surrounding waters filled with glaciers, icebergs and whales, Iceland is like no other place on Earth. It's also an ideal spot to observe a seasonal phenomenon above the Earth: the northern lights  (or aurora borealis).

The following Iceland tours, determined by U.S. News to be the best available thanks to expert input and traveler sentiment, provide ideal ways of experiencing all that this extraordinary place has to offer. All of these excursions are conducted by knowledgeable guides eager to share their insights into their country's special features.

In addition to icebergs and the glacial wall, you might also spot wildlife like seals and various bird species. Tourgoers consistently describe the guides as passionate and knowledgeable, and say photo opportunities abound. Trips are available from May through October several times a day, with departures in both the morning and the afternoon. The park containing the lagoon sits in the southeast part of the country, about 236 miles from Reykjavik . Ice Lagoon Adventure Tours also runs private excursions.

Other highlights include Geysir, a hot spring that shoots plumes of vapor into the air; Gullfoss (aka the Golden Waterfall) over which water cascades down more than 100 feet into a narrow canyon; Kerid, a colorful red-earth volcanic crater; and a two-hour stop at the heated waters of the popular Blue Lagoon. Tour-takers invariably find the scenery spectacular and the guides friendly and informative, though a few found the bus to be too small for the number of people on the tour. Tours happen daily all year long. Pickup from various locations in Reykjavik occurs between 8:30 and 9 a.m. and minibuses return to the city around 8 p.m.

Tourgoers report spotting ample wildlife, and appreciate the knowledgeable, friendly guides.

Day 2 – Golden Circle & South Coast

We start day 2 with picking you up from your hotel in Reykjavik. This day will include some of Iceland’s best attractions. You will definitely not want to miss out on any of the sightings that you will see on this day.

Close by your guide will take you to Skógafoss, an impressive 60-meter high waterfall located at the foot of a mountain range, followed by a visit to the Skógar Folk Museum.

The last stop before continuing to your accommodation is at the black sand volcanic beach near the village of Vík í Mýrdal. Here, you will be able to see the spectacular rock arch and steep cliffs of along with the Reynisdrangar basalt columns just off the shore.

Next, you will travel to your carefully selected charming boutique hotel, situated far from the city lights to give you the best chance of seeing the Northern Lights. Enjoy dinner at Magma Hotel with the group (dinner is included).

Day 4 – Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon & Diamond Beach

Start the day bright and early as you have a full day of exciting icy highlights ahead of you. You will spend some time exploring Skaftafell, part of the immense Vatnajökull National Park, and a place of great natural beauty. The tour will then head to the spectacular Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon, famous for its floating icebergs in shades of milky white and bright blue.

On a clear day, you may even get a good view of Breiðamerkurjökull glacier behind the lake. Next to the glacier lagoon, we'll stop at Fellsfjara, aka Diamond Beach. Here you'll see large chunks of ice that have washed up on the shore after being shaped and polished in the surf of the glacier lagoon. It’s truly a beautiful sight and a great photo op!

After some time at the Diamond Beach, you will be driven to your accommodation for the night. A delicious local dinner will be served, and after, you can end the evening by putting on some warm clothes to gaze at the sky waiting for the Northern Lights to appear (dinner is included).

Day 5 – Eastfjords and Lake Mývatn area

Today you will get to experience a slice of Iceland that few travelers get to explore. Your group’s drive takes you along majestic East Iceland, with gorgeous scenery that includes tranquil fishing villages, narrow fjords, rugged tundra, and sweeping landscapes. If you are lucky, you might spot a reindeer or two as they come down from the mountains to stay close to the sea during the winter months.

Among other highlights, you will stop in the small villages of Stöðvarfjörður and Fáskrúðsfjörður, the latter known for its French heritage and a fascinating northern lights photo exhibition. The final destination of the day is the otherworldly Lake Mývatn area. Here, you have the option of either relaxing at the hotel after today’s drive or going to visit the warm alkaline geothermal lagoon and saunas at the Mývatn Nature Baths, with a view to mountains and lava fields (not included).

The Lake Mývatn area is known for being one of the best places in Iceland to view the Northern Lights due to the altitude and the lay of the land. We therefore highly recommend that you are on the lookout for the Aurora Borealis tonight!

Day 6 – North Iceland & Akureyri

Start the day by exploring the unusual, moon-like landscapes of the Lake Mývatn area, including the Námaskarð pass and the Skútustaðagígar pseudocraters: sights that are even more surreal in wintertime. You will also have a chance to see Goðafoss, the Waterfall of the Gods, which is among the most beautiful falls in the country. While the waterfall is not very tall, the cascade is divided into two horseshoe-shaped falls, making it unique among Icelandic waterfalls.

You’ll then have some free time in Akureyri to explore on your own. Akureyri is a charming town with museums, shops, cafés, and a picturesque harbor area, before heading to Skagafjörður, where your will dine and stay at Hofsstaðir (dinner is included).

Day 7 – West Iceland & back to Reykjavík

Before heading back to Reykjavík, you will get the chance to explore the incredible western part of Iceland along beautiful Borgarfjörður. Your guide will stop at Deildartunguhver, the most powerful hot spring in Europe, the beautiful and the spectacular twin waterfalls of Hraunfossar and Barnafoss.

Hraunfossar is a thrilling series of waterfalls seemingly originating in a field without a river or lake. The water is actually streaming through rivulets in the Hallmundarhraun lava field.

Meanwhile, Barnafoss is more like a series of rapids caused by the water of Hvitá entering a narrow passage. Next, you will be driven to the historical sites at Reykholt, which is rich in saga history. Reykholt was the home of 13th century writer, poet, and scholar Snorri Sturluson.

After being dropped off at your accommodation, you can spend the evening at your leisure in the city center of Reykjavík.

Day 8 – Goodbye Iceland

Shared airport transfer to Keflavík Airport for your return flight (included).

When it’s time for your Iceland adventure to end, you will be picked up from your hotel by a shuttle bus about three hours before your flight. If you’re flying in the afternoon, you have the option to visit the Blue Lagoon geothermal spa to relax in the warm mineral waters before continuing to the airport (not included).

FAQs about our guided group trips

How does a guided group tour work.

On this type of tour, you’ll travel around Iceland by bus with the same driver-guide for the length of your trip. Guided group tours are a great way to make like-minded friends, as you’ll spend time with the same travelers for your whole vacation.

You’ll get to stay in accommodation around the country, and some tours include a few evening meals too. After a day’s exploring, you’ll go back to your private room and meet your guide and group the next morning to continue your trip.

All of our guided group tours start and finish in Reykjavík.

How big will the group be on the tour?

There are 2 group sizes available:

  • Small group: Up to 16 people
  • Big group: Up to 36 people

Small groups offer a more intimate travel experience, whereas big groups are more wallet-friendly.

What will the other people in my group be like?

You’ll likely be with people from a whole mix of backgrounds, from different countries and of different ages. Your guide will entertain you with fun facts and jokes as you journey around Iceland. It’s almost guaranteed you’ll be laughing along with your group!

There will most probably be a mix of solo travelers, couples, and small groups of friends and family.

Is there a luggage size restriction on the bus?

The luggage restrictions on guided group tours 3 days and longer are as follows:

  • 1 suitcase or large bag per person for clothes and overnight items
  • 1 day bag for essential items, like a camera, extra clothes, and valuables

The luggage restrictions on guided group tours up to 3 days are as follows:

  • 1 small carry-on luggage, bag size: 50 x 30 x 60 cm (19.9 x 11.8 x 23.6 inches)
  • If you have large luggage with you, please check with your accommodation if they offer luggage storage while on this tour. If that is not a possibility, you can pay an extra fee per luggage (2000 ISK) with 72 hours notice.

Each day your luggage will be loaded onto the bus. In the evening, you’ll take all your bags with you to your room.

Can I customize a guided group tour?

Our guided group tours have fixed start dates and itineraries. While it’s not possible to customize the actual tour, you can tailor your trip with extra days and activities before or afterwards.

For example, you could add a couple more days in Reykjavík at the end of your trip. Fill these with day tours or exciting activities like ice caving and snowmobiling.

WEST COAST OF ICELAND

Our 4-day trip will begin in Reykjavik, where we’ll pick you up from your hotel or at a nearby pickup point. Then, we’ll head towards the West, where enchanting landscapes of rural Iceland will take your breath away. Have your camera ready at all times as exquisite and unique scenery might sneak up on you at any time. Our first stop of the day will be at a small town called Borgarfjörður, where hot spring Deildartunguhver sprays groundwater at everyone who comes close. Then, we’ll drop by the waterfalls of Hraunfossar and Barnafoss, and you’ll learn the stories behind their names. Both waterfalls are attractive and whimsical in their own way. We’ll cap the day off by seeking out the supernatural Northern Lights phenomenon in the dark sky.

On the second day of our trip, we’ll continue to explore the west of Iceland, in the radiant Snaefellsnes Peninsula, and we’ll start by traversing the ravishing Djúpalónssandur beach. Once home to a thriving fishing village, the cape is now known for its gorgeous black sand and a few ruins from the mid-20th century. Try to spy the antique British trawler Epine that lies lifeless on the shore or the few colossal lifting stones that were once used to test the strength of daring locals. After we’ve explored most of what the Snaefellsnes Peninsula has to offer, we’ll head back to Reykjavik for the night.

SOUTH COAST OF ICELAND

The third day of the trip begins with us paying a visit to the Seljalandsfoss and Skogafoss waterfalls. We’ll explore these wonders of nature from the inside, where remarkable photo opportunities of the waterfalls and surrounding areas await. Remember to bring waterproof clothing for this adventure. Next, we’ll head to Reynisfjara, a world-famous black sand beach with majestic basalt column formations just off the shore, the Reynisdrangar peaks, which, according to the legend were once trolls, petrified one fateful morning when the sunlight touched their skin. We’ll finish the day off with a Northern Lights chase!

EAST COAST OF ICELAND

Ready for some adrenaline? Our fourth and final day will begin with an enthralling hike in a Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon. Before the hike, you’ll be provided with the necessary equipment and safety guidelines, to make sure the hike is a delightful experience all around. To make this hike even more sensational, our tour guide will tell you about the lagoon, when and how it was formed, point out the most astonishing icebergs. From here, we’ll have a short walk toward the Diamond Beach. This beach is covered in icebergs, some massive and others minuscule, and the chiaroscuro of crystal on black creates a sort of apocalyptic scene. Plenty of photo opportunities are to be had here!

Day 1: West Iceland

Pick up will be at 9 am from the Reykjavík meeting point you have chosen. Please note that even though the pickup procedure up can take up to 30 minutes, you do have to be ready and waiting at 9 am.

Be prepared to embark upon a tour that will leave you inspired long after you’ve left Iceland. We’ll first head towards a town called Borgarfjörður, home to Europe’s biggest hot spring, Deildartunguhver. The hot spring pumps out around 33 ounces (180 liters) of hot water per second. The temperature of the hot spring is about 100°C and it is used to provide heating and hot water to the neighboring areas.

day tours northern iceland

You will have the option of visiting the  Krauma  geothermal baths on this day. For those that choose not to visit Krauma, we will go and visit a nearby horse farm and pet some Icelandic horses!

day tours northern iceland

Afterward, we’ll be on our way to Reykholt, a small, yet culturally important town in Iceland where famed medieval poet and politician Snorri Sturluson lived. There’s also a hot spring pool where he’s said to have bathed. Close to Reykholt, you’ll visit two waterfalls unlike any other in the world: Hraunfossar and Barnafoss. Afterward, if the forecast is favorable, we’ll try to catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights. As the day draws to an end, we’ll head to the Snæfellsnes Peninsula, where the next day’s adventures await.

The accommodation for the night will be in Hotel Borgarnes.

Day Highlights

  • Deildartunguhver hot spring
  • Hraunfossar and Barnafoss Waterfalls
  • Northern Lights Hunt (in the right conditions)
  • Pick up from Reykjavik
  • Guided minibus tour to all highlights
  • One night at a hotel

Once awake and spoiled with a generous breakfast, we’ll head towards Djúpalónssandur Beach. On the way there, you’ll be able to soak in the beautiful alpine and coastal scenery of western Snæfellsnes. Djúpalónssandur used to be a flourishing fishing village with around 60 fishing boats. You might notice a handful of huge stones on the shoreline. Back in the day, fishermen would challenge each other to lift the stones in order to prove their strength. Here we’ll enjoy a short hike along the coast, as the shimmering silver-tipped Atlantic waves roll over the glossy black pebbles of this beach. An old British trawler, shipwrecked in 1948 is still visible from the shore.

At the top of the beach, we’ll come across a picturesque view of Iceland’s most photogenic mountain, Kirkjufell. Snæfellsnes is known for its diverse and artistic landscapes, and is often referred to as “Iceland in a nutshell.” We’ll cap the day off with spectacular views of Snæfellsjökull, the monumental glacier, made famous by Jules Verne’s book “Journey to the Center of the Earth.” After a full day of adventures, we’ll drive you back to the Reykjavík for the overnight.

Day 3: the grand south coast.

The second half of your trip will take place in the southern and eastern parts of Iceland. Throughout out the entire day, expect to see breathtaking landscapes, consisting of immense, moss-smothered lava fields, waterfalls, volcanic black sands, and glacier tongues.

After a hearty breakfast in Reykjavik, we’ll head along the South Coast, passing through farmlands, towns, and villages, towards the Seljandsfoss waterfall. This remarkable waterfall is definitely worth getting damp for as you hike up behind the waterfall, soaking in the pleasant peek through the water curtain cascading down. Our next highlight is the neighboring Skógafoss, located on the base of a volcano called Eyjafjallajökull. Hike up this waterfall’s crest for panoramic views of the lowland below, and, on a clear day, Mýrdalsjökull is also visible.

Our next stop is Reynisfjara, a black sand beach with wind-sculptured basalt cliffs and sea stacks. On the way to our accommodation in Hof, we’ll drive through the charming small town of Vík. Once at the hotel, we’ll enjoy a peaceful evening and, if the conditions are right, we’ll hunt for the Northern Lights once more.

Day 4: ice cave and glacier lagoon.

Once well rested, we’ll start our last day of the trip by visiting world-famous Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon nearby Diamond Beach. We encourage you to explore the glittering, out-of-this-world ice lagoon and go on an ultimate hike in the Vatnajokull ice cave.

day tours northern iceland

Many of these natural ice sculptures are washed onto the beach and broken into a million pieces that then decorate the black sand like sparkling diamonds. This is how the site earned the name of   “Diamond Beach” .   Don’t forget to look out for the floating icebergs, cut off from the glacier tongue, on the shore of Diamond beach. You might even see a seal or two.

Next, we will literally enter the body of a glacier and   visit a spectacular ice cave , accompanied by a qualified guide, of course. Ice caves are fascinating natural wonders that are always changing, winter after winter. Due to the melt and freeze cycle of the glaciers, new caves are born each year and will later refill with ice and disappear.

Inside a glacier , you will find ice of a surprisingly deep jewel blue. This color is caused by both the compression of the ice under its own weight and the way that our eyes perceive light and color. For any photographer, the journey into an ice cave will give them the superb opportunity to capture the shimmering blue light that filters through the glacial ice into the ice cave.

day tours northern iceland

On our way back to Reykjavik, we’ll stop by the Vatnajökull National Park for a quick visit. Skaftafell Nature Reserve is a green area in the middle of jagged mountains and snow-capped peaks. The splendid scenery of Skaftafell is definitely going to be the highlight of the day. As night falls, we’ll go on a hunt for Northern Lights.

happy woman at night under Northern Lights

Due to traffic, weather, and the possibility of Northern Lights, we can expect to return to Reykjavík from around 9 pm to 11 pm.

Please note that as the ice caves are an ever-changing natural phenomenon, it is, therefore, not possible to say that we will visit any specific cave. The choice of ice cave will always be based on the conditions and safety considerations at the time of the trip.

  • Vatnajokull Glacier
  • Jokulsarlon Glacier Lagoon
  • The Crystal Beach (Diamond Beach)
  • Skaftafell Nature Reserve
  • Guided Ice cave tour
  • Certified Glacier Guide
  • All glacier and ice cave equipment
  • Drop off in Reykavík

Please note

If you do not choose the single supplement you will be paired in a twin room with another participant of the same gender.

Attractions Map

If we arrive in iceland on the same date as we booked our tour, could we miss out on it.

We always recommend booking a multi-day tour starting at least one day after arriving in Iceland. If you’re flying in from the US or will be landing early (4-6:30 am) you should be able to join the tour, but some risks would follow (i.e if the flight gets delayed) and could, therefore, miss out on the tour.

Is it guaranteed that we will see the Northern Lights during the tour?

Most of the hotels we use during our tours are remotely located and therefore ideal for spotting the northern lights. If the forecast is in your favor, then it is more than likely that you will be able to see the magical show put on by the dancing northern lights during your tour with us. Most of the hotels offer a Northern Lights wake-up call up on request if the lights are spotted.

The Northern Lights are a natural phenomenon; therefore, we can unfortunately never promise they will be seen. Their appearance depends upon atmospheric and weather conditions. The best time to see them is between September and March when it’s dark and clear. The sky needs to be as dark as possible, so the best places to see them are well away from city lights (that’s where we are going!). For more information on the Northern Lights, please look at our blog about   Northern Lights .

I'm not sure I have all suitable gear, do you offer any for rent?

If you are not sure that you have suitable gear for your tour, we offer some necessary items for rent. For most of our multi-day tours, we rent out waterproof jackets and pants as well as hiking boots. You can book these items and more under the selection “Extras” in the booking widget when booking your tour on our website.

If you have already booked the tour and wish to add some rental gear to your booking, you can do so at least 24 hours prior to your tour starting by using our customer portal - My Adventures , or contacting our customer care .

What will the average driving per day be?

We drive on average around 300 km (186 miles) per day on our multi-day tours. You will be spending approximately 4-5 hours in the car each day. We do of course stop on multiple locations throughout the tour for sightseeing, activities, bathroom breaks and lunch stops.

Does this tour suit me?

We do welcome participants of all ages older than the listed minimum age for each tour. We have people of ages ranging from 8-99 years joining our multi-day tours.  Our average group usually consists of participants between the age 20-55 years. We do get a lot of solo travellers joining our tours, as well as families and friends.

If you have difficulties participating in any of the activities included in the tour, for example, a glacier activity, you are more than welcome to skip it. You can explore your surroundings in the meantime or wait elsewhere. Our guide should be able to drop you off at a nearby place where there are some services available.

What is my luggage allowance on a multi-day tour?

For multi-day tours, each participant is allowed to bring a small backpack and 1 piece of luggage weighing a maximum of 20 kg (44 lbs). If you have more or heavier luggage with you, you will need to book storage for the surplus luggage before you arrive, there is a small fee for using this facility. Luggage storage in Reykjavík can be added during the booking process of your order in the extras section.

* The combined dimensions of each bag must not exceed 158 cm (62 in).

Which type of meal options are available for me on the tour?

Breakfast is included at all the hotels we stay in during the tour. The breakfast will be a typical breakfast buffet, offering bread, toppings, cereal, yogurt, fruits, coffee, and tea etc.

Your guide will also find a good place for the group to eat lunch. We always try to choose places that have a wide selection of dishes on the menu, so there will be options available for everyone. The dinner is usually at the hotels we stay at for the night.

Are meals included in the tour?

If your tour includes accommodation, breakfast is always included during the tour at the hotel/guesthouse restaurant.

Meals and beverages are otherwise not included on your tour. (Unless it’s specifically stated in the description of the tour)

On our multiday tours, we will be making stops at restaurants and convenience stores where you will be able to purchase all necessities. Cash is not necessary, as credit cards are almost always accepted. Having a small amount of cash doesn’t hurt though.

I'm a solo traveller, is there a single supplement?

A single supplement is available if you want to have your own room, but you are not required to pay a single supplement. If you are a single traveler and do not wish to book a single room, you’ll be roomed with another traveler of the same gender.

What kind of rooms can be expected when booking the multi-day tour with Arctic Adventures?

When booking with Arctic Adventures, you are guaranteed an accommodation at a nice country hotel and/or a guesthouse. The hotels we have partnered up with are all of the same standard and offer nice rooms with made-up beds. The rooms come with private or shared bathrooms, depending on your booking. The standard room is a twin room but it’s possible to request a double room or a triple room, with no extra charge.

If you are traveling solo, you will have to add the single room fee if you wish to have a single room.

All hotels have free Wi-Fi. Towels, a hairdryer and a kettle are accessible at all of the hotels. Hotel breakfast is included!

Both experiences are included in the tour price but with room for upgrades, such as combining aurora hunting with an ATV ride.

Alternatively, you can start your northern lights hunt with a visit to an aurora museum, learning all about the science and folklore of this ethereal natural wonder before journeying out of the city to spot it.

On days two and three, a minibus will take you to the countryside to see the most prized highlights of the Golden Circle and the South Coast.

You can head to the icy slopes of Mount Hafrafell, just outside the city, to race around the beautiful landscapes on an ATV. After an hour of adventure, a bus will pick you up and escort you into the dark surroundings in search of the lights.

On a cruise, you’ll set out from the city’s harbor into the still waters of Faxafloi Bay, providing magnificent views of the Reykjavik skyline and the fjords and volcanoes of the west. When the sky turns dark, there are few better places to admire the aurora.

Finally, you could instead elect to take a more personalized minibus tour, before which you will have admission to the Aurora Reykjavik Museum.

Here, you can learn about the science and folklore surrounding the northern lights and helpful information on spotting and photographing them.

If you have time before your tour, be sure to explore Reykjavik. It is a beautiful city with interesting architecture and many public artworks, like the Sun Voyager statue.

There is plenty to see and do in Reykjavik if you have extra free time.

Tonight you’ll stay in comfortable accommodation in Reykjavik.

Experiences

Accommodation, day 2 – reykjavík.

  • Thingvellir National Park
  • Geysir geothermal area
  • Gullfoss waterfall

After a fantastic start to your holiday, you will spend your second day getting further out of the city and exploring the Golden Circle sightseeing route on a guided tour. One of the most famous trails in the country, it has three iconic sites that show the diversity of Iceland.

Since you're on a guided tour, expect a more immersive experience as you visit each location. You'll learn about the attractions' history and most exciting trivia. You're also free to ask your guide questions if anything piques your interest.

First to see on your itinerary is the most famous UNESCO World Heritage Site on the island, Thingvellir National Park. Not only is it the birthplace of modern democracy in the country, but it boasts a landscape of beautiful waterways, forests, and lava fields.

While here, you can opt into a snorkeling tour, in which you are equipped with a drysuit and guided through a crystal clear stream in the Silfra ravine. Snorkeling participants must be comfortable in the water and able to swim.

The second attraction of the Golden Circle sightseeing route is Strokkur, a geyser that ejects steaming water to great heights of around 66 feet (20 meters). It is located in the Geysir geothermal area, home to many vibrantly colored hot springs and fumaroles.

Finally, you'll reach a powerful, two-tiered waterfall thundering in an ancient valley, Gullfoss waterfall. The cascade is a beautiful sight to behold in winter when snow and ice formations surround it.

If you elect to do so when booking, you can choose to add a snowmobiling trip after your time at Gullfoss waterfall. You'll set off to the nearby Langjokull glacier and zoom across its gleaming, beautiful surface.

The third choice of the tour is a ride on an Icelandic horse, where you'll explore the serene countryside of South Iceland like the first settlers.

In the evening, if you didn't get a chance to see the northern lights the night before, you will have another opportunity tonight before heading back to your accommodation in Reykjavik.

Day 3 – Reykjavík

  • Seljalandsfoss Waterfall
  • Skogafoss waterfall
  • Reynisfjara black sand beach
  • Reynisdrangar Sea Stacks

On the third day of your winter vacation, your adventure brings you to the South Coast of Iceland, home to many of the country’s most diverse and stunning attractions, surrounded by the North Atlantic Ocean.

The South Coast boasts two incredible waterfalls, Seljalandsfoss Waterfall and Skogafoss Waterfall. Both face out to the ocean and stand at an impressive 197 feet (60 meters) tall, though they differ in every other way.

Seljalandsfoss waterfall is narrow, with a massive cavern behind it, carved by the ocean centuries ago. Tourists can walk on this cavern to view and photograph the water curtain from behind or at any angle they prefer.

Skogafoss waterfall, however, is much more powerful and has fascinating folklore of hidden treasure. You can view its cascade from a flat valley on the bottom or hike toward the top cliff.

To make your visit to Skogafoss waterfall extra special, beautiful rainbows are familiar sights above the waterfall’s water curtain on a sunny day.

Behind this waterfall are the glaciers of Eyjafjallajokull and Myrdalsjokull, both of which conceal notorious volcanoes. If you choose to, when booking, join a glacier hiking tour and scale the magnificent outlet of Solheimajokull glacier for some spectacular views.

The glacier hike includes gear and equipment to keep you safe while exploring the beautiful terrain. Your guide is also ready to assist you during the adventure.

Further along the South Coast, you’ll come to Reynisfjara, a beautiful black sand beach with dramatic, powerful waves, towering sea stacks, and great views over the enormous rock arch of Dyrholaey.

Here, you’ll turn back and return along the South Coast route back to the capital. If the sky turns dark, keep a keen eye out for the auroras. Of course, you are welcome to add on another northern lights tour if you are eager for another hunt.

Tonight, you’ll return to your accommodation in Reykjavik.

Day 4 – Reykjavík

  • Reykjavík - Departure day

Your fourth day is sadly the last of your long weekend in Reykjavik. If you have an early flight, you may only have time to say a quick goodbye to the capital city as you take your Flybus back to the airport.

However, you can fit in one more adventure if you have a late departure.

If traveling before the end of October, you can take an excursion only offered in Iceland, descending into the magma chamber of a dormant volcano.

Large enough to easily fit the Statue of Liberty and dyed vivid colors, it is an incredible place to marvel over the volcanic forces of the earth.

Those who would rather see Iceland’s landscapes from another angle can opt for one of two flightseeing tours in a helicopter or small plane.

Such excursions, which leave from the domestic airport, provide spectacular views over the magnificent mountainous landscapes surrounding the capital and are a unique way of admiring the city.

You can also spend the last day of your long weekend in Reykjavik, walking its charming streets, shopping for souvenirs in its boutiques, admiring its public artworks, and exploring its museums and galleries.

For those who have a later flight and choose to visit the Blue Lagoon geothermal spa today, you will finish your stay unwinding before heading to the airport.

The Blue Lagoon geothermal spa is the perfect place to relax as you bathe in the warm, mineral-rich waters and reflect on the incredible adventure you have just taken in the land of fire and ice.

You’ll reach the airport with plenty of time to drop off your luggage and check-in for your flight. Once in the terminal, you can relax, shop, or grab a drink from the bar while waiting for your flight.

What to bring

Good to know.

The northern lights are a natural phenomenon, and therefore cannot be guaranteed, but this itinerary is designed to maximise your chances to see them if the weather allows. Please be aware that your itinerary may have to be rearranged to fit your arrival date and time better.

Those who opt to go snorkeling must be comfortable in the water and able to swim, and must present medical documents before snorkeling or diving.

It can happen, in the case of extreme weather, that an activity is canceled. If your chosen activity is canceled, we will assist you with rearranging or booking other activities when possible, and any potential price difference will be refunded to you.

Note that Icelandic roads and pavements can be slippery in the wintertime. We recommend you bring shoes with slip-resistant soles or ice-grip shoe covers. The covers can be purchased in most supermarkets and gas stations around the country.
