We spent a week in Dubrovnik as part of a month spent exploring Croatia with our kids. As full-time travelers, we see lots of pretty beaches, but our whole family loved exploring this ancient city. The museums in the Old City were a great way to escape the heat, as is kayaking around the famous walls and visiting gorgeous beaches.

In this post we’ll explain what is included in the Dubrovnik Card, also called the Dubrovnik Pass, whether it is worth it, where to buy it, how to use it, and why you should get one! We’ll cover who should buy a Dubrovbnik Pass and who should skip. Since the Dubrovnik Card includes admission for one child under seven with every pass, families can save even more than the average visitor.

When we visit cities, we usually stay for at least a week and don’t usually visit a lot of pricey attractions, so often the city cards or city passes don’t make sense for us. This Dubrovnik City Card is the exception! Read on for why the Dubrovnik Pass is a must for your first visit to Dubrovnik, Croatia.

The Dubrovnik Card is a city pass for tourists that includes admission to some of the major sites in Dubrovnik, as well as access to public transportation, and discounts at other attractions, restaurants, and stores. Used properly, the DuPass should save you money on major attractions that you’ll want to visit anyway!

Is the Dubrovnik Pass the Same as the Dubrovnik City Card?

Yes, the Dubrovnik Pass is the official name of the Dubrovnik tourist pass. It was rebranded in 2022 from the name Dubrovnik Card when a digital version was created.

The Dubrovnik Pass can be bought online and used with an app on a mobile device. It is sometimes also abbreviated as the DuPass. They are all the same card designed to make visiting popular attractions in Dubrovnik easy for tourists and give them an incentive to visit some lesser-known attractions as well.

How Many Days Is the Dubrovnik Pass Valid?

The Dubrovnik Pass has three versions- you can buy a Daily Pass (1 Day), 3 Day Pass, or 7 Day Pass. You’ll have to look at which included attractions you are interested in visiting to determine which pass is right for you.

The 3-Day Pass is only 10€ more than the 1-Day Pass, so visiting one extra attraction will justify buying the longer pass and allow you a more relaxed visit, rather than trying to squeeze as much as possible into one day.

What is Included in the Dubrovnik Pass?

The One Day Dubrovnik Pass includes admission to the following attractions in Dubrovnik:

-Dubrovnik City Walls (including Lovrjenac fortress) -Cultural History Museum, Rector’s Palace – Maritime Museum , Fort St. John -Ethnographic Museum -Marin Držić House – Dubrovnik Natural History Museum -Friars Minor Franciscan Monastery Museum (known for its old pharmacy) – Museum of Modern Art Dubrovnik -Dulčić Masle Pulitika Gallery -The Pulitika Studio -Archeological Exhibitions, Fort Revelin

Also includes a 1 Day bus card, valid for 24 hours on city buses.

All passes include one child under 7 in your admission. You may only visit each attraction once.

The 3-Day and 7-Day passes include the same attractions, as well as the Bukovac House in nearby Cavtat. These include 3-day (72 hours) and 7-day (168 hours) bus passes as well. A one-way bus ticket is approximately 2€ without the Dubrovnik Card.

Each Dubrovnik Pass also includes discounts on other attractions, tours, and restaurants. This includes discounts on tickets for the famous Dubrovnik Summer Festival . You can see the full list of discounts , but I would consider these “bonuses” and not factor them directly into the cost of the Dubrovnik Card.

As you book other tours or visit shops or restaurants in Dubrovnik, make sure to inquire whether they offer a discount with your Dubrovnik Card.

What is Not Included in the Dubrovnik City Pass?

There are so many things to do in Dubrovnik, and not all of them are included in the Dubrovnik City Pass. You should note that the Dubrovnik Cable Car up to Mt. Srd and the ferry to Lokrum Island are not included in the Dubrovnik Card. This is one of many families’ favorite things to do in Dubrovnik , and is not cheap.

However, with the 3-Day Pass, you do get a 20% discount on the Lokrum Island Ferry, which increases to 30% with the 7-Day Pass.

Lokrum island is a quiet oasis, and a great day trip away from the heat and crowds of Dubrovnik. It’s also a must for Game of Thrones fans , as the original Iron Throne is located here. Check out our full guide to visiting Lokrum Island .

What Does the Dubrovnik Pass Cost?

As of 2024, the Dubrovnik Pass costs 35€ for the 1 Day Pass, 45€ for the 3 Day Pass, and 55€ for the 7 Day Pass.

There is one price for everyone 7 years old and up, there are no discounts for seniors, students, or children.

Is the Dubrovnik City Card Worth it?

Yes, if you plan to walk the Dubrovnik City Walls, the Dubrovnik City Card is worth getting for adults. The cost of a ticket to the walls is currently 35€, the same as the Daily Pass. You will also be able to bring one child with you, saving their admission cost of 15€.

If you are a first-time visitor to Dubrovnik we highly recommend walking the old city walls of Dubrovnik be one of the first things you do in the city. You’ll get a great overview of the city and can see for miles around, including out to Lokrum Island.

We walked the city walls our first morning in Dubrovnik, and it gave us all a great overview of the city and out to Lokrum Island. Don’t forget to peer into the bell tower to see the famous twin bell ringers called “zelenci”.

You can walk at your own pace, our kids loved exploring the nooks and crannies, and climbing the stairs to get even higher above the city. We also had a chance to take some fun family photos.

Make sure to start early (they open at 8 a.m.) to avoid annoying crowds. We also prefer starting at the entrance on St. Dominics Street, rather than by Pile Gate, as you are less likely to have crowds.

Keep in mind that the Dubrovnik Card also includes skip-the-line access, so you’ll spend more time seeing the sights of Dubrovnik, and less time waiting in line.

If you decide to join one of the popular Game of Thrones Tours in Dubrovnik they usually include a visit to Lovrjenac fortress which was featured as the Red Keep in the series. However, the cost of admission to the fortress is not included in most tours but will be covered by your Dubrovnik Pass.

If you are not planning to walk the City Walls, you’ll need to calculate whether the cost of the DuPass is worth it based on the cost of your planned attractions. Many attractions offer reduced rates to children, so it is unlikely that a DuPass will make sense for children. Instead, buy them only for the adults in your group.

We highly recommend a visit to the Museum of Modern Art Dubrovnik – it’s included in the Dubrovnik Pass, and is a great break from all the ancient sites in Dubrovnik.

Our family also enjoyed visiting the Rector’s Palace , which contains the Cultural History Museum and is also included in the Dubrovnik Pass. This beautiful building houses a mix of displays, from weapons and intricately locked chests, to ornately decorated rooms and painted palanquins.

Here are some of the reasons we think the Dubrovnik Card is a good fit for a lot of visitors to Dubrovnik:

-Incentives to Do More Things: With so many attractions included, you can see more things in Dubrovnik without worrying about “whether they are worth the cost”. Check out a new gallery, or museum, and you may be surprised how much you and your family enjoy it! Without an extra ticket cost, you can pop into an attraction at no extra cost and see if it interests you. We are sure you’ll discover some hidden gems!

-Free Public Transport: No worrying about how much to pay for the bus, grab the bus pass that is included in your Dubrovnik Pass and hop on and off the bus as much as you like. You can easily visit beaches, restaurants, and more outside of Old Town.

Although Croatia is part of the EU and also Schengen as per January 2023 there should be no roaming costs if you already have a sim card from Italy , Denmark , Sweden , UK , Germany  or any other country in Europe.

There are three mobile internet operators in Croatia: T-Mobile Croatia, A1 and Telemach Croatia. All three providers offer Croatia prepaid sim cards for tourists.

Where to buy a sim card for Croatia

The best places to buy a prepaid sim card for Croatia are in the city centers of any big tourist destination and city. T-Mobile, A1 and Telemach all have shops in Zagreb, Zadar, Pula, Dubrovnik, Split, etc. The Croatia sim card deals you find at the international airports are more expensive, but more convenient.

When in the city use Google Maps to determine the nearest mobile internet shop by just typing in the by you preferred mobile internet provider in the search bar.

Zagreb Airport

Split, Dubrovnik and Zadar Airport

I have done research online about buying a sim card at these airports in Croatia and found out that every airport sells the same prepaid sim cards in the Tisak convenience stores, like at Zagreb Airport.

Convenience stores / gas stations

In Croatia it is NOT necessary to bring your passport when buying a prepaid sim card. Prepaid sim cards are NOT registered on your name. This makes it possible to buy a prepaid sim card for Croatia in the bigger convenience stores. In Croatia they are called: Tisak, INA, iNovine and Hrvatska Posta. At bigger gas stations they also sell prepaid sim cards. The sim cards you buy here are self service and you will need to activate them yourself. It is not my first recommendation for tourists traveling to Croatia.

Prices for prepaid sim card plans for tourists are not the only thing that determines the best sim card for traveling in Croatia. In fact the mobile data network coverage is actually even more important. Therefore let's compare the  4G/5G networks coverage maps for Croatia  for 2024 and find the best 4G/5G network.

Is there 5G in Croatia?

Yes, there is 5G in Croatia and it is actually pretty ok. As per August 2024 you can find 5G in most of the popular tourists destination in Croatia. On my recent trip in Croatia I enjoyed a 5G signal most of the time in Zagreb, Zadar, Split and even in Plitvice National Park, but it depends which sim card you buy.

Although the above mobile data network coverage maps are updated for 2024 they are not 100% accurate. However, they are a great reference to compare the 4G/5G networks of the mobile internet providers in Croatia in 2024.

From the above coverage maps we can clearly see that T-Mobile has the best 4G/5G network in Croatia in 2024 . Telemach also covers most tourist destinations in Croatia with a 5G signal, but for road trips in Croatia T-Mobile is definitely the recommend sim card for tourists in Croatia.

So for people that go on a sailing trip in Croatia the best prepaid sim card is T-Mobile. T-Mobile has the strongest network around the islands by far.

Prices Croatia prepaid sim card in 2024

All the below prices are up to date as per August 2024. Prices are in Euros and $1 USD = €0.92 EUR and €1 EUR = $1.09 USD.

T-mobile Croatia prepaid sim card

T-Mobile Croatia has a special prepaid sim card for tourists. It costs €11.49 EUR ($13 USD) and comes with unlimited data for 10 days. This bundle is only valid in Croatia, there is NO free EU roaming included.

IF you stay longer than 10 days you can top up the same T-Mobile Croatia tourist sim card with another 10 days unlimited high speed data for €8 EUR ($9 USD). For more info check the  T-Mobile Croatia website . In T-Mobile stores in Croatia you can only get a physical prepaid sim card, there are no eSIMs for tourists available.

Telemach Croatia prepaid sim card

Tourist that are buying a Telemach Croatia prepaid sim card have 2 choice.

• 10 GB data + 200 minutes or sms + 10 KN credit valid 30 days = €9.95 EUR ($11 USD)

Or a prepaid sim card for Croatia with unlimited data for 10 days = €9.95 EUR ($11 USD)

The above Telemach prepaid sim card plans are ONLY valid in Croatia, EU roaming is NOT included. For more info check the  Telemach Croatia website . In Telemach stores in Croatia you can only get a physical prepaid sim card, there are no eSIMs for tourists available.

A1 Croatia prepaid sim card

A1 Croatia also keeps it really simple and offers 1 prepaid sim card plan for tourists traveling to Croatia:

• Unlimited data + 100 minutes/sms valid for 10 days = €10 EUR ($11 USD)

Also for an A1 tourist sim card counts that minutes and data are only valid in Croatia, EU roaming is NOT included. Check the  A1 Croatia website  for more info. In A1 stores in Croatia you can only get a physical prepaid sim card, there are no eSIMs for tourists available.

Best prepaid sim card for Croatia in 2024

Once you have a balance in Euro you can spend with your card with no extra fees - just tap and pay as you would at home. You'll also be able to make cash withdrawals whenever you need to, with no extra conversion fee to pay. Your card - or the ATM operator - may charge a withdrawal fee, but this can still be a cheap, secure and convenient option for getting cash when you need it.

With other cards, you can't hold a balance in Euro on your card - but you can leave your money in US Dollar and let the card convert your money for you when you spend and withdraw.

Some fees may apply here - including currency conversion or foreign transaction charges - so do compare a few different cards before you sign up, to make sure you're picking the one which best suits your specific spending needs.

Bear in mind though, that not all cards support all currencies - and the range of currencies available with any given card can change from time to time. Best SIM Cards In Croatia

Trying to figure out which telecom company offers the best SIM card deals for tourists can feel quite overwhelming. To help you with this task, today I’m going to go over the best SIM card options available in Croatia .

In this article, I will give you a general overview of the different options offered by the main mobile providers in Croatia so you can decide for yourself which is the best Croatian prepaid SIM card for your trip.

SIM card options available in Croatia

Croatia has 3 major telecom companies through which you can pick up a SIM card: Hrvatski Telekom, A1, and Telemach.

Let’s start by going over the SIM card options they have for tourists.

Hrvatski Telekom SIM card options for tourists

Hrvatski Telekom is T-Mobile branch in Croatia. They have the widest and fastest 4G and 5G coverage in the whole of Croatia (they’ve even won awards for it). So, getting a SIM card from Hrvatski Telekom is a great option for travelers who will be working remotely or exploring the lesser-known areas of the country.

Hrvatski Telekom offers two prepaid SIM packages in Croatia exclusively for tourists and travelers:

• The first costs €9.90 or 74.59kn , and it offers 80GB of mobile data for 30 days . This package only offers 4G speed .
• The second has a slightly higher price point costing €11.49 or 86.57kn for unlimited mobile data for 10 days . Alternatively, for just a little more you can pick up a package that offers 70GB of mobile data for €11.95 or 90.04kn . The higher price point for this package is down to it offering 5G speed.

There are also options available to top-up your account if you happen to be staying longer than 30 days, or if you use up all your data. If a top-up is necessary, you can do it online by downloading the Moj Telekom HR app. Another option for topping up is to pick up a Simpa voucher from a T-Centar, petrol station, post office, newsstand, or supermarket. 

One thing that is important to note is that despite Croatia being in the EU, your tourist SIM card with Hrvatski Telekom will only work inside Croatia – it won’t grant you free data roaming across the rest of the EU. So if you plan on traveling to other destinations in Europe within the same trip, you may want to consider another option ( continue reading to check our tip).

A1 SIM card options for tourists

Next up we have A1, which is also a major player in the telecom market boasting over 24 million customers throughout Europe. They have excellent network coverage throughout the country, but overall Hrvatski Telekom still takes the top spot in terms of coverage.

A1 offers one prepaid SIM card option for Croatia dedicated to tourists. This package offers 5G speeds provided that your phone has 5G capabilities.

For just €10 or 75.35kn, you can get access to a tourist package that lasts for 10 days , with unlimited mobile data . Where A1 differs from Hrvatski Telekom is that it also offers up to 100 minutes/SMS messages to local Croatian numbers.

You can top up your A1 account online through the A1 app and the company’s webpage. Recharge your balance at physical locations including ATMs, post offices, A1 stores, and petrol stations.

Unfortunately, the prepaid SIM card for Croatia from A1 also doesn’t offer EU roaming – it will only work within Croatia. If you need more information, check the A1 website directly .

Telemach SIM card options for tourists

Telemach is the third major company operating in Croatia. They are a large telecom company operating throughout the whole of Southeastern Europe.

The coverage offered by Telemach was often considered the worst among all three providers because they didn’t have coverage in Croatia’s rural areas. However, as of 2023, Telemach’s 5G coverage now extends across the whole country, putting all three providers at a similar level.

Telemach has two prepaid SIM card packages available to tourists in Croatia:

• NET2GO – this prepaid SIM card offers users an unlimited amount of GBs for 10 days . It costs €9.95 or 75kn . 
• SIM2GO – coming in at €9.95 (75kn) too, this Croatian tourist SIM is valid for 30 days . In terms of data, this SIM offers just 10GB for a duration of 30 days. However, you will get 200 minutes of local calls.

There’s no information on whether Telemach offers 4G or 5G on their site. However, I did contact their customer service team who informed me that their SIMs are not 5G enabled . So, you’ll only have 4G speeds with a Telemach Croatia SIM card for tourists.

Top-ups can be done by texting various codes listed on their website. You can also top-up through the app, or using vouchers brought online, in Telemach stores, newsstands, supermarkets, post offices, and petrol stations. 

Once again, Telemach tourist SIM cards only offer coverage for Croatia – outside of Croatia they won’t work. Read more on Telemach’s official website .

Which is the best Croatia SIM card for tourists?

For a trip of 10 days or less.

The best prepaid SIM card in Croatia for short trips is the one offered by A1 . It costs only €10 and gives you unlimited data with 5G speed. It doesn’t get much better than this.

Additionally, A1’s package also gives 100 free minutes of calls and texts to local numbers. Even though I never use calls at home, they can come in handy when traveling, especially if you will be renting apartments via Airbnb or Booking. Having the possibility of calling your host can be extremely helpful.

For a trip of longer than 10 days

For a trip longer than 10 days to Croatia, my recommendation does change. 

In this case, Hrvatski Telekom’s 1st package is the best deal for anyone who wants a prepaid SIM card for their Croatia trip. For only €9.90, you will get 80 GB of data for 30 days, which is a very good value.

The main trade-off with this package is that it doesn’t have access to 5G speeds.

However, I only recommend this package if you will be staying only in Croatia . If you will be visiting other countries within the same trip, you may want to consider other options that have better international coverage. See my recommendation below .

Best SIM card for traveling to Croatia and other European countries

If you will be visiting multiple European countries within the same trip, instead of buying a SIM card for each destination, you may want to consider picking up an eSIM instead.

With an eSIM, you can easily get EU-wide coverage or you can select the exact countries you will be visiting and tailor a plan exactly to your needs.

Our favorite eSIM providers are Airalo and Nomad. We have used their mobile plans in multiple countries and have always had great experience.

What is the best SIM card for Croatia and Slovenia?

It depends on which country you will be visiting first. If Slovenia will be your first destination, you can buy a Slovenian prepaid SIM card with EU coverage such as the HoT plan, and use it for both destinations.

However, if you will be visiting Croatia first, the best option would be to buy an eSIM because the Croatian prepaid SIM card options do not offer EU coverage. In this case, get a quote with Airalo or Nomad to avoid the hassle of having to buy a SIM card in every country.

What is the best SIM card for Croatia and Montenegro?

Since Montenegro is not part of the EU, most local prepaid SIM cards will not offer the option of data coverage in both countries.

In this case, the best choice is to get an eSIM from Airalo or Nomad and tailor a plan to your needs.

Where to buy prepaid SIM cards in Croatia?

SIM cards are widely available all over Croatia, so you should have little trouble finding them. Here are the options of places you can buy prepaid SIM cards from each of Croatia’s main telecom companies.

• Hrvatski Telekom – You can buy a Hrvatski Telekom SIM card at T-Centars, Tisak (convenience store), iNovine (newsstands), and post offices. You can also arrange to have a SIM delivered to you for free .
• A1 – You can buy A1’s SIM cards in A1 stores, newsstands, petrol stations, supermarkets, convenience stores and post offices. You can also order your A1 SIM online here . 
• Telemach – Like the other two mobile providers, you can buy a Telemach SIM from all the usual stores including Telemach Shops, newsstands, supermarkets, post offices, and petrol stations. There’s currently no option to order a Telemach SIM online.

It’s worth noting you should be able to buy a SIM card at all major Croatian airports upon arrival . Just head for the nearest convenience store in the airport (probably a Tisak). I’ve done this multiple times when visiting Croatia. Just make sure you don’t fall for the overpriced international mobile plans they sometimes offer.

Do i need a sim card in croatia.

If you currently have a non-EU SIM card, I would highly recommend buying a SIM card while in Croatia to make sure you stay connected during your trip.

Having a SIM card in a foreign country always makes life immeasurably easier. It allows you to navigate, translate, and keep in contact with people while you are outside of your accommodation.

Which mobile network is best in Croatia?

In terms of coverage and speed, Hrvatski Telekom is the best mobile network in Croatia. They’ve won multiple awards over the past several years for their speed and coverage.

How much does a SIM card cost in Croatia?

If you pick up a prepaid SIM card for Croatia from one of the country’s three main providers, expect to pay between €9.90 and €11.95 .

However, please keep in mind that the prepaid SIM cards for Croatia listed above will only work inside Croatia – they won’t work outside the country! If you will be visiting other destinations within the same trip, I recommend getting an eSIM with Airalo or Nomad instead.

If you are looking for a T-mobile tourist SIM card, then you need to get the Hrvatski Telekom SIM card in Croatia. Hrvatski Telekom is the Croatian branch of T-mobile.

Buying a prepaid SIM card for Croatia is a cheap and easy way to get high-speed mobile data while traveling and it can save you a lot of money compared to using your current carrier’s international plan. In this guide, I’ll teach you how to buy a SIM card in Croatia—including the best places to purchase SIM cards, tips for activating your service, and I’ll cover any quirks you might encounter along the way.

How To Buy An SIM Card With A High-Speed Data For Croatia

You have two main options for buying a prepaid SIM Card for Croatia:

• The Easy Way – Buying A SIM Card Before You Travel : Buying a physical SIM card before you travel is a little more expensive but it’s way more convenient (and you have mobile data as soon as you arrive in Italy).
• In general, it’s easier to pre-buy a prepaid data plan if you’re visiting for less than two weeks. But buying a local SIM card after arriving is cheaper for longer trips.

How To Buy A Prepaid SIM Card For Croatia Before You Travel (i.e. The Easy Way)

The easiest way to get mobile data in Croatia is to buy a prepaid Croatian/European SIM card before departing from an online dealer who will mail you the physical SIM card.

There are a few European data plans aimed at visitors—they’re a bit more expensive than waiting to buy in Croatia but there is zero hassle (no tracking down a mobile phone shop, no registering your SIM card, no dealing with people who don’t speak English, etc).

Once you receive the SIM card, you simply install it once you’re in Croatia and it automatically connects to a local mobile data provider.

There are a number of different mobile data plans available at SimOptions.com (I’ve used them in the past) and they’ll ship the SIM card to you before your trip. Again, check to see if your phone accepts eSIM cards because eSIM delivery is instant and free (both SimOptions.com and Holafly are two reputable sellers).

I estimate that you’ll spend an extra $12-$22 over the course of a two-week trip if you buy ahead vs waiting to purchase a physical SIM card in Croatia—which I think is worth the convenience.

Orange Holiday Europe Prepaid SIM Card For Croatia

In my opinion, the Orange Holiday Europe Prepaid SIM Card is the best full-featured SIM card option for Croatia (and the rest of Europe) because it offers generous data for a fair price—and it includes worldwide calling and texts. The main drawback is the 14-day validity period—which doesn’t matter if your trip is less than two weeks. That said, you can buy an extra 10GB of credit for an additional two weeks for around $25.

Unlike some other plans, the Orange Holiday Europe plan allows data tethering so you can use your phone as a mobile hotspot. Additionally, Orange is one of the largest mobile companies in Europe so they have great coverage throughout most of Europe (which isn’t always the case with smaller European carriers).

Buying a local prepaid SIM Card in Croatia is a fairly straightforward process but knowing where to buy a SIM card can be confusing because different cards are sold at multiple places—including individual grocery stores, airport kiosks, and retail storefronts.

If you don’t want to deal with the hassle, it’s easiest to simply buy an Orange Holiday Europe SIM Card , Orange Holiday eSIM , or Holafly Croatia eSIM before you arrive in Croatia—plus the service works in any European country.

Buying SIM Cards From Major Mobile Carriers in Croatia

The three major mobile carriers in Croatia are T-Mobile Croatia ,  A1 Croatia , and  Telemach Croatia/Net2Go . They all have a 10-day prepaid “tourist” SIM card data plan which costs around $12—most will mail the SIM card to a local Croatian address or you can buy them in-store. They also have other data plans but this is going to be the best option for most travelers.

All of Croatia’s major carriers have one or two physical storefronts in major cities. Their employees will likely speak some English but it’s not guaranteed. That said, they deal with phones all day so you shouldn’t have too much trouble.

Buying SIM Cards At The Airport In Croatia

All the major airports in Croatia have SIM card sellers but they’re overpriced since they’re targeting desperate, data-hungry travelers.

Newsstands, Tobacco Shops, Vending Machines, Grocery Stores, Post Offices, Etc:

SIM cards are sold in multiple smaller shops, train stations, newsstands, grocery stores, and at random shops throughout most cities. Don’t expect any customer service at these locations and options will be limited.

You Don’t Need Your Passport

Many companies require you to bring your passport when buying a SIM card for registration but Croatia doesn’t require this.

Your Service Works Anywhere In The European Union

A law was recently passed in the EU which banned mobile carriers from charging roaming fees within the EU—which means a SIM card you bought in Croatia can be used in Frace without paying any extra fees. This is great for travelers because you can use one plan everywhere.

Your Phone Must Be Unlocked (Before You Leave)

Some mobile carriers (mainly in the US, Australia, and New Zealand) “lock” their phones so they’ll only work on that carrier’s network—this typically applies if you have a plan that includes a free phone with a multi-year contract. You’ll need to contact your carrier and have them “unlock” your phone so it will accept a third-party SIM card.

In the US, carriers are required to unlock phones if the customer requests it but it’s rarely unlocked by default. That said, a few carriers still make customers jump through hoops to unlock their phones so don’t put this off until the last minute or you could be out of luck.

A New SIM Card Gives You A New Phone Number

Installing a new SIM card gives you a new phone number so your old number won’t work until you reinstall your original SIM card (unless your phone has two SIM slots). So, if people need to reach you, you’ll need to tell people your new European number.

Furthermore, lots of websites and apps use two-factor authentication that’s connected to your phone number so that will no longer be an option with the new SIM installed. And if you use Uber/Lyft, you’ll need to update your new phone number in the app when you install your new SIM.

A benefit of getting an eSIM instead of a physical SIM is that you keep your original phone number.

Keep Your Old SIM Card Safe

You’ll need to reinstall your old SIM card to get your domestic service back once the trip is over.

How Much Mobile Data Do You Need?

As long as you’re not streaming music/videos or uploading a ton of photos, you probably won’t use more than 3GB-6GB of mobile data a week.

If you’re spending a lot of time on social media (notably Instagram and TikTok) then you might use a bit more but if you’re just doing normal web browsing and using Google Maps then you might only use 1-2GB a week.

Buy A Portable Battery Charger

Traveling with your phone will quickly drain your batteries so I highly recommend a portable battery. I use  Anker PowerCore 10000  because it’s tiny and affordable but there are multiple options.

Take Steps To Lower Your Mobile Data Usage

Data can be expensive and it’s extremely easy to unknowingly burn through a lot of data because many apps use data in the background. Facebook, email, Instagram, Snapchat… those all constantly use data throughout the day without you knowing it. That’s it’s important to know how to limit your data usage.

Use Airplane Mode And Block Data to Specific Apps

I’ll put my phone in Airplane Mode because that disables all data (but GPS still works in Airplane Mode). You can also go into the settings and disable data access to each individual app. I’ll go in and turn every off except for things like Google Maps or others that I’ll use more frequently — this way when I turn off Airplane Mode only those apps that will use data. Then I’ll turn Airplane Mode back on when I’m done.

Download Offline Maps

Google Maps lets you download entire city maps so they can be used offline. As an added bonus, GPS doesn’t use data so offline Google Maps works fairly well (but not all functionality works). Here is a good YouTube video that explains everything.

Make Calls Over WiFi

WhatsApp is an excellent app for free calling and text messages — I’ve found that many Europeans exclusively use WhatsApp to communicate (including many Airbnb hosts).

Do you need a visa to visit Croatia?

Croatia is an endlessly appealing destination with sun-drenched beaches , picturesque hilltop towns and atmospheric streets.

Many come for the Dalmatian Coast delights and Istria's rural charms. Others are here for superb  hiking routes , treasured national parks , food and drink experiences , or the chance to enjoy hip Zagreb's art, music and cafes.

Thankfully, the government has ensured the country is a breeze to enter for most visitors. Croatia joined the European Union (EU) in 2013 and became part of the free-traveling Schengen Area in January 2023. That means visitors from much of Europe have basically no bureaucracy to deal with.

Travelers from further afield have a few hoops to jump through. For most there's no need for a specific visa to enter Croatia, just yet. From mid-2025 the ETIAS (European Travel Information and Authorisation System) comes into effect.

Here’s our guide to Croatia’s entry requirements, with everything you need to know about whether you need a visa, how to get one and whether you can take a working holiday in Croatia.

Do I need a visa for Croatia?

EU citizens don’t need a visa for stays of any length, they don’t even need a passport providing they have an ID card. The same applies to members of the European Free Trade Association (EFTA): Iceland, Liechtenstein, Norway and Switzerland, that means you.

Many other nations don’t need visas either, but from mid-2025 visitors to Croatia (and most of Europe) will need to apply for the ETIAS travel authorisation before departing. This applies to nearby countries like the UK, Serbia, Montenegro, Kosovo, Bosnia and North Macedonia, as well as people from Canada, the US, most of Latin America, Australia, New Zealand and several Asian nations, including Japan, South Korea and Taiwan.

How often do I need to get an ETIAS?

The ETIAS lasts for three years and costs €7. With it you can enter the territory of 30 European countries as often as you want for short-term stays (normally for 90 days in any 180-day period). You also need a passport that's valid for at least three months after the date you plan to leave. The application is expected to be approved in hours but it's always best to apply ahead of time in case there is any bureaucratic hold-up. 

How do I apply for a Croatian tourist visa?

Of course, not every nationality is able to travel to Croatia visa-free. Everyone else – including citizens of China , India , Pakistan ,  Russia , Turkey and South Africa , will need visas to enter the country. For a complete list, check the website of Croatia’s Ministry of Foreign and European Affairs – you can use the drop-down to find individual nations.

The site has details for individual countries’ requirements and embassy locations. Most pages also link to the relevant VFS Visa Application Centre page, where you can find out costs (visas are usually €80 plus fees for applicants ages 12 and older, €40 for children aged between six and twelve, and no charge for kids under six), and start the application process.

Applications for tourist or business visas (both of which are valid for 90 days) should be started online, although they may eventually need to be submitted in person at an embassy, consulate or VFS Visa Application Centre. You’re recommended to start an application no more than three months before your trip starts.

Visas may sometimes be issued at the border, but this is only under exceptional circumstances  and is unlikely to be worth the risk of being turned away.

You can bring in a vehicle if your paperwork is satisfactory, and the normal EU rules apply when bringing  animal products into the country.

Can I extend a Croatian visa?

Citizens of the EU and EFTA, as well as Swiss nationals, can stay as long as they like. Citizens of other countries – whether they’re traveling visa-free, on a tourist visa or on a business visa – can only spend 90 days in the country over a 180-day period. There are a few exceptions:

• visas may be extended for serious personal circumstances ;
• longer stays may be possible for people who take seasonal employment or study in the country;
• workers who intend to settle in Croatia may apply for residency.

Can I work in Croatia?

If you’re from the EU or EFTA (or you’re Swiss), you can work in Croatia.

People from outside the EU may be able to work in Croatia. Still, you’ll need to be supported by your employer and meet the requirements of the Croatian Employment Service  – essentially proving you’re filling a gap in the Croatian workforce. Highly qualified workers who intend to make their home in Croatia may qualify for an EU Blue Card .

The rules are more relaxed for seasonal employment in agriculture, forestry, catering and tourism, where a job offer alone may be enough for a 90-day stay.

Keen to swap your normal working environment for a Zagreb cafe or an apartment overlooking the Adriatic? Digital nomads  working for themselves or a non-Croatian company may be able to stay for up to a year if they meet the application form requirements.

Entry requirements

This information is for people travelling on a full ‘British citizen’ passport from the UK. It is based on the UK government’s understanding of the current rules for the most common types of travel. 

The authorities in Croatia set and enforce entry rules. If you’re not sure how these requirements apply to you, contact the  Croatian Embassy in the UK . 

COVID-19 rules 

There are no COVID-19 testing or vaccination requirements for travellers entering Croatia. 

Passport validity requirements 

Croatia follows Schengen area rules . Your passport must:

• have a ‘date of issue’ less than 10 years before the date you arrive – if you renewed your passport before 1 October 2018, it may have a date of issue that is more than 10 years ago
• have an ‘expiry date’ at least 3 months after the day you plan to leave the Schengen area

Check with your travel provider that your passport and other travel documents meet requirements.  Renew your passport  if you need to. 

You will be denied entry if you do not have a valid travel document or try to use a passport that has been lost or stolen. 

Visa requirements 

You can travel without a visa to the Schengen area , which includes Croatia, for up to 90 days in any 180-day period. This applies if you travel:

• as a tourist
• to visit family or friends
• to attend business meetings, cultural or sports events
• for short-term studies or training

The requirements for working in Croatia are different.

If you’re travelling to other Schengen countries make sure your whole visit is within the 90-day visa-free limit. Visits to Schengen countries in the 180 days before you travel count towards your 90 days. If you overstay the 90-day visa-free limit, you may be banned from entering Schengen countries for up to 3 years.

Make sure you get your passport stamped on entry and exit (until November 2024). 

If you’re a visitor, border guards will look at your entry and exit stamps to check you have not overstayed the 90-day visa-free limit for the Schengen area.

If your passport is missing a stamp, show evidence of when and where you entered or left the Schengen area (for example, boarding passes or tickets) and ask the border guards to add the date and location in your passport.

At Croatian border control, you may also need to: 

• show proof of your accommodation, for example, a hotel booking confirmation or proof of address for a second home
• show proof of your travel insurance
• show a return or onward ticket
• prove that you have enough money for your stay – the amount varies depending on your accommodation

Staying longer than 90 days in a 180-day period 

To stay longer, you must meet the Croatian government’s entry requirements. Check which type of visa or work permit you need with the  Croatian Embassy in the UK . See the Croatian Ministry of the Interior’s guidance on work permits .

If you’re in Croatia with a residence permit or long-stay visa, this does not count towards your 90-day visa-free limit.

New Schengen entry requirements (planned for November 2024 onwards)

From November 2024, the new EU Entry/Exit System (EES) will start for all non-EU nationals, including British nationals, travelling in or out of the Schengen area. The Schengen area is made up of 29 European countries, 25 of which are EU Member States. The EES is a digital border system which registers non-EU visitors travelling into the Schengen area instead of stamping their passports.

You will need to have your fingerprints and your photo taken when entering the Schengen area. If you enter the Schengen area through Dover, Eurotunnel at Folkestone or St Pancras International, your fingerprints and photo will be taken before you leave the UK. You will also need to provide either your fingerprint or photo on exit.

You may experience longer queues at borders when the new system starts.

Croatia-Slovenia border crossings

Registering with the police 

Your accommodation provider must register your arrival in Croatia with the police within 48 hours. Your hotel will normally register you. If your accommodation provider is unable to do this for you,  fill in and print form obrazac 16a (PDF) . You must hand in the completed form at a police station. Alternatively, you should go to the nearest police station with the owner of the accommodation to register your address in Croatia. 

Customs rules 

There are strict rules about  goods that can be brought into and taken out of Croatia . You must declare anything that may be prohibited or subject to tax or duty. 

Taking food into Croatia 

You cannot take meat, milk or products containing them into EU countries . There are some exceptions such as powdered baby milk, baby food and special foods or pet feed required for medical reasons.

Taking money into Croatia

Declare cash or travellers cheques if the value is 10,000 euros or more . You will get a certified declaration to show you brought it in with you. If you do not, your money could be seized when you leave.
