Chiquis Talks Keeping Banda Fresh & Honoring Jenni Rivera in ‘Abeja Reina’

Chiquis is back with her new album Abeja Reina . The Mexican-American singer is continuing to push banda music to new places on the 18-track LP. This time around, Chiquis tells Remezcla that she “doesn’t give a fuck” and does what she wants with this album, including an homage to her late mother Jenni Rivera. In an interview, Chiquis opens up about making Latin Grammy history, her favorite songs on the album, and her mom’s legacy .

Abeja Reina is a nod to Chiquis’ fan base, the Boss Bee Nation, who crowned her queen bee. It also reflects the struggles that she has overcome in her life. “I became a queen because I survived so many different things,” Chiquis says. This is Chiquis’ first album since she made history in 2020 as the first female artist to win the Latin Grammy Award for Best Banda Album . Jenni Rivera was previously nominated two times in her lifetime but never won. “I feel like the things she wanted to accomplish, I’m also accomplishing for us,” Chiquis says. “I always saw us as a power team. I see it as a win for both of us. It’s crazy. I feel like it’s all coming full circle.”

Like Jenni, Chiquis remains a powerful voice for women in the male-dominated banda genre. On Abeja Reina , she’s also updating the genre with new sounds. In the empowering title track “Abeja Reina,” Chiquis fuses banda with a bit of a corridos twist. “It’s basically just telling a story with just balls,” she says with a laugh. “I felt like I’m standing in my own power and I don’t care what anyone has to say.” Chiquis keeps the peda going in “ Entre Besos y Copas .” “I feel like you’re going to need tequila with this,” she says about the track that was inspired by Jenni’s “No Llega El Olvido.” And for those going through heartbreak, Chiquis has the sexy cumbia anthem “ La Ex .”

The sexiest song on the album is Chiquis’ cover of “ De Contrabando ,” one of Jenni’s biggest hits. She supplies the classic track with some sultry vocals while also giving it a fresh R&B spin. It’s a beautiful tribute to her mother. This December will mark the 10th anniversary of Jenni’s tragic passing. Reflecting on mom’s impact, Chiquis says, “It was like a woman of her size physically & with five children wasn’t supposed to make it, & she did. I want people to remember that because if she could do it, we could all do it. She was a strong woman full of courage. Era muy luchona.”

As a woman in banda music, Chiquis also has a strong LGBTQ+ fanbase. On her album, she dedicates the fierce “ Lo Que Está de Moda Soy Yo ” to them. “I’m with you guys!” Chiquis says. “I love you guys! Be proud and don’t let anyone dim your light.” With the music video, she plans to celebrate the LGBTQ+ community. “I want transgender people in the video!” she adds. “I want drag queens! I want to be in drag! This song is for the LGBTQ+ community.”

As for what’s next, Chiquis has plans to tour the Abeja Reina album. She is also working on her other projects, including two books to follow her recent memoir, Unstoppable, and looking into more opportunities with her skincare line. “I want to keep expanding [my empire] even more so,” she says.

Once again, Chiquis is opening a window into her life. But this time, the singer and TV personality, who has appeared with her family in several reality shows, does it through a documentary series titled Chiquis Sin Filtro , meaning Chiquis Without Filter , which premieres Friday (Aug. 16) on the Spanish-language streaming platform ViX.

“Today I feel more mature and ready to talk about things that before I could not and today I do publicly,” says the daughter of the late Mexican music star Jenni Rivera , whose siblings will also appear at times in the docuseries.

The first of 10 episodes will be available for free on ViX, with the following debuting every Friday through the ViX’s Premium plan, where the first two will premiere at the same time. Chiquis Sin Filtro is produced by JK Media Group and Busy Bee Productions, owned by the singer. Directed by Melissa Bidwell, the series is produced by Tuti Loor and Chiquis herself, who says she has been attentive to all the details.

Winner of Latin Grammy Awards for best banda album for Playlist (2020) and Abeja Reina (2022), Chiquis has been touring with her most recent album, Diamantes , for which she hopes to receive her third nomination in the category this year. “I feel like it’s the best thing I’ve done so far,” she says. “I feel very proud of this project. I’ve always liked to take risks musically. I’ve done it since the beginning of my career and now even more so. I like my voice; I like what I’m doing.”

“I have had the Auditorio in my sights for years, and when I performed up at the Lunario almost two years ago, I said ‘I want that venue,'” Chiquis said. “I didn’t think it would happen this year, but it did, and I’m a woman who likes to take risks and go for it.”

She continued: “It’s very important to me because it’s Mexico, and Mexico is obviously very important to my music, to my genre. So I’m preparing something definitely special that is still Diamantes Tour, but I want to have special guests singing with me songs that I haven’t performed [yet on the tour], add songs that my fans are asking me to this performance.”

Currently, Chiquis is also participating as a judge on TV Azteca’s talent show La Academia , which searches for the best voice among participants from Mexico and Central America.

“I’m having a great time. At first I didn’t know what to expect. I was a little nervous because I know it’s a very big responsibility. I didn’t want to hurt anyone’s feelings, I’m not that kind of person, but I like to be honest,” she says enthusiastically. “So far I feel very good. I feel content and happy to be part of these young people’s career and life who are looking to be singers. Seeing their growth every week inspires me and makes me feel proud of them.”

Jenni Rivera's five children, Mexican singer Gloria Trevi and hundreds of fans participated in the unveiling of the star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.

Rivera always knew that one day, she'd have a star on Hollywood’s Walk of Fame; this is what her children said. In between joy and tears, they remembered a woman who imposed herself with her music and talent in a world dominated by men.

In an emotional posthumous celebration to honor Rivera's legacy, aka “La Diva de la Banda’s,” her five children remembered the singer, entrepreneur and single mother, who taught them how to fight for their dreams.

“It is a great honor,” said the teary-eyed Chiquis Rivera. “It is a great honor to be the daughter of such a wonderful woman. A woman who achieved a lot, yes, but more than anything, being the daughter of a woman who has left her mark on this earth and in the hearts of so many people.”

Chiquis, who continued the musical path that she inherited from her mother, said, “even though nearly 12 years have passed, she is still alive and I see her in my brothers and I see her in all of you.”

All attributions of Jenni Rivera's life and legacy were honored Thursday at the unveiling of her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame. The late Mexican singer and businesswoman was represented by her five children, who received the star in her honor and gave speeches highlighting the life of Jenni Rivera.

As the ceremony began, hundreds of Rivera fans who arrived early sang her music and chanted “Jenni, Jenni!” in anticipation of her star.

The presenters, Rivera's five children, Jenni’s close friend and journalist Ninette Ríos, and Mexican singer Gloria Trevi, were introduced by Hollywood Chamber of Commerce President Steve Nissen.

“Jenni's spirit will live on forever in her art and work, and she continues to change lives,” Rio's said. “The Hollywood Chamber of Commerce is honored to be able to continue her legacy at this ceremony and her place on the Walk of Fame.”

After Ríos, Trevi took the podium. As she approached the microphone, fans began chanting “Gloria, Gloria!”, after which Trevi responded with “Jenni, Jenni!”, encouraging the audience to focus on the honor being given to Rivera.

Trevi, a Mexican singer raised in the same musical environment as Rivera, spoke about the challenges of being a Latina woman in the music world and how Rivera was able to succeed despite all obstacles.

“Jenni, ahead of her time, triumphed in a genre dominated by men, highlighted the bravery of women, prevailed with her musical legacy and her personal story, and that is why she is unforgettable and unrepeatable,” said Trevi.

Rios added that her successes in the industry were largely due to Rivera's open and loving disposition.

“Jenni had a unique gift of being able to connect with people and understand their hearts,” said Ríos.

Rivera's youngest son, Johnny López, spoke about her mother's philanthropic side, emphasizing that Jenni Rivera's big heart was her “greatest strength” as an artist.

Among other efforts in the city, López highlighted the help that Jenni Rivera gave to the Children's Hospital of Los Angeles, including a donation of $35,000 just before her death. López also acknowledged the help Rivera gave to her fans when they needed it. For example, a time she did a raffle to help raise money for a fan and also donated a hearing aid to another fan who had hearing problems.

“I hope that when you see this star, you not only think about her spectacular voice, her audacity and ingenuity, or her beautiful laugh, but also her great heart,” said López.

After the unveiling of the star, all of Rivera's children and grandchildren released butterflies from Jenni Rivera’s newly dedicated star on Hollywood Boulevard. The butterflies symbolize “La Mariposa del Barrio” a nickname given to Rivera that represented her journey in trying to achieve her dreams of fame that seemed so far away.
