What you need to know before you visit Xcaret

Located in Mexico’s popular Riviera Maya, Xcaret is an eco-archaeological park with over 50 attractions. Visitors come to Xcaret to snorkel with fish, explore underground rivers and caves, learn about Mayan culture, see wildlife and enjoy its tropical surroundings. It has a lot of similarities to nearby Xel-Ha Park .

This family friendly adventure park is situated 60 km south of Cancun International Airport, 6 km from Playa del Carmen and 57 km north of Tulum. It takes about an hour to drive to Xcaret from Cancun .

We have visited the Riviera Maya several times before, but this was the first time we visited its amusement parks. After researching each one, and reading the recommended ages (our youngest is 4 years old), we decided to visit Xel-Ha and Xcaret on our most recent trip to Mexico.

Should you visit Xcaret? Is it worth it?

In our opinion, the answer is yes. However, you’ll want to be prepared before you go.

We learned a lot during our first visit to the park. The big realization was that we were not fully prepared for our visit. The purpose of this post is to share our firsthand experience with you so you don’t make some of the mistakes/assumptions that we did.

Below are a few things we learned while visiting Xcaret.

Xcaret map inside Mexico amusement park, Xcaret travel guide for travelling families

Xcaret park is really big

Xcaret is over 200 acres (81 hectares)! You’re unlikely to explore the entire park in one visit, especially with young children. It’s just too big to do it properly in one day.

We suggest you take a look at the map  and plan your activities in order of location.

A good way to organize your day would be to group your activities by sections, like South, North, East and West. Or, by water activities versus land activities. For example, you would do land activities in the morning and evening, and water activities mid-day so you avoid changing clothes multiple times a day.

If you’re traveling with young kids, we suggest you bring a stroller or rent one at the park.

They have single (299 pesos) and double strollers (399 pesos) available to rent. It’s a big park, so this is money well spent. Our boys were 6 and 4 years old during our visit and they complained that we were walking too much.

Keep in mind, it’s quite hot during the day. Bring hats and reef safe sunscreen .

Xcaret is very family friendly

If you’re traveling with kids 4 years old or under, admission to the park is free. Children between the ages 5 to 12 years old will get a discounted rate on admission.

It’s a good idea to bring or rent a stroller if you have younger children. Most of the park is flat and there are stroller friendly paths to most exhibits.

Kid friendly activities include: viewing jaguars, turtles of all sizes, sharks, manatees and coral reef aquarium. Children’s World , one of the newest attractions at Xcaret, has water slides, hanging bridges, cenotes, a parakeet habitat and a playground. There’s also a butterfly pavilion and wild bird aviary inside Xcaret.

Information about Xcaret activities can be found here .

Xcaret restaurant not all inclusive, things to know about Xcaret Mexico

Xcaret is NOT all-inclusive

Xcaret is NOT all-inclusive. If you are staying at an all-inclusive resort in the Riviera Maya, this may feel like a surprise. Some of the other adventure parks in the area are all inclusive, so this can be confusing.

You will need to bring cash and a credit card with you. There are extra charges for day lockers, strollers, snorkel equipment, towels, food and beverages.

Should you watch Xcaret Mexico Espectacular?

We made the mistake of not properly planning our time inside the park. We arrived early, around 9:30 AM. On the surface, this seemed like the right idea. However, if you want to attend the evening shows, we learned that an early arrival time is not ideal.

Our boys were pretty tired and cranky by 6:00 PM. There was no way they would survive the Xcaret México Espectacular evening show.

Because of this, we did not get to see the big show. This was unfortunate because we’ve heard it’s the highlight of Xcaret. We did see some of the actors in costume before the show began. It looks like quite the spectacle.

Travel tip – Plan your visit to include the evening show. If you have young kids, it might be wise to arrive at the park late morning or mid-day.

xcaret visit plan

We did watch the evening horse show.

This Mexican cowboy show is quite entertaining and worth watching. If you haven’t had dinner yet, consider eating at La Cocina (located near the park entrance) because it’s right beside the horse show. The restaurant has some of the best seats to watch the show.

The horse show finishes before the Xcaret Mexico Espectacular evening show.

Should you spend time at Xcaret Beach?

If your hotel or resort does not have a nice beach, you may want to save some beach time for Xcaret. It’s beautiful stretch of beach with safe and calm water, which is ideal for young children who cannot swim. The water is warm and crystal clear (see photo above), and the sand is silky smooth. And there are plenty of chairs and loungers available.

To keep the cove water clear, and the fish safe, you’ll want to bring special sunscreen with you. Xcaret asks that guests only use biodegradable sunscreen, because normal sunscreens contain oils that pollute the water and cause illnesses to the marine life. The park strives to protect the environment and they ask visitors to do the same.

If you don’t have biodegradable sunscreen with you, you can purchase a bottle inside the park. Otherwise, it’s a good idea to purchase before you leave home. You can  order it on Amazon here .

Should you buy the Xcaret Plus Package?

Because Xcaret is NOT all-inclusive, you may find that the expenses start to add up. If you plan to eat while inside Xcaret, we suggest you purchase the Xcaret Plus package. Full details here .

The difference in price, from the basic admission, is an increase of $35.00 CAD per adult ($17.00 CAD for kids). The Xcaret Plus package gives you the following:

  • Access to Area Plus facilities including restrooms, dressing rooms and showers
  • Use of snorkeling equipment, life jackets and inner tubes
  • Safety bag service during the river journey
  • 1 Buffet lunch including 1 beer and unlimited beverages (soft drinks, flavored waters and coffee). There are 5 restaurants to choose from. The buffet costs $29 USD per adult, so if you plan to eat at the buffet, the price of the Plus Package will cover this cost.

Xcaret has optional activities for additional cost. Here’s the list

Build your own package and choose 2, 3 or 4 of the best Tours in Cancun and Riviera Maya.

Book online and save up to 25% at Xcaret

Swimming in Xcaret’s underground caves

There are lots of things to do at Xcaret. Too many, actually (see the list of activities  here ). So, you have decisions to make.

One activity you can’t miss is swimming and snorkeling through the park’s network of underground rivers and caves. These sacred rivers and caves are unique to the Riviera Maya.

We underestimated the length and darkness of the caves, but you can exit at several stops along the way if you find it too long. Our 4 year old was a little scared of the darkness, and my father and mother (the kids grandparents, age 70 and 75 years old) found some sections to be too long.

Make sure you get a pair of fins. They make swimming through the caves so much easier.

If you purchase the Xcaret Plus package, you’ll want to find the dedicated Area Plus facilities to store your belongings. If you purchased basic admission, you’ll want to find day lockers to rent.

Last minute personal items, like shoes, hats, towels and wallets, are stored in a locked bag and transported to a station at the end of the river. You keep the key with you and pick up your belongings at the designated station. This is a nice service but it can be a little confusing.

When in doubt, ask questions.

What to pack for a day trip to Xcaret?

Here’s what we recommend you bring with you:

  • Bottled water
  • Biodegradable Sunscreen
  • Snorkel gear
  • Waterproof Camera ( we use this one )
  • Stroller (if you have kids)
  • Wrap for over your bathing suit
  • Extra change of clothes
  • Sweater (it gets chilly in the evening)
  • Small snacks for kids
  • Comfy shoes AND a pair of flip flops (you will do a lot of walking)
  • Cash and credit card

Travel tip – write your name and phone number on your kid’s wrist band (guests receive a wrist band upon entrance). That way, if your child gets lost, they can show an employee the phone number to call.

Also, it’s wise to explain to your kids what to do should they get lost. Create a plan and communicate it to them. Have them repeat the plan back to you.

Bring snacks and water with you

The park does not allow outside food, however, it’s a good idea to bring some bars and snacks for your kids. Our boys are always hungry, so they’re constantly snacking.

Our youngest boy is allergic to dairy and eggs, so we don’t know what food will be available for him. The park says it’s okay to bring baby food and milk/formula if you’re traveling with an infant.

Xcaret Park Hours of Operation

Xcaret Park is open 365 days a year from 8:30 AM to 9:30 PM. Regardless of when you plan to visit the Riviera Maya, you’ll be able to visit Xcaret.

According to the park website, the best days to visit are Saturday and Sunday because most hotel packages arrive and depart on those days.

If you’re traveling with young kids, and you want to watch the evening shows (it ends at 9:30 PM), we suggest you arrive a little later in the day. Have breakfast at your resort, then plan to arrive around noon and stay for the evening shows.

Xcaret Prices and How to get Xcaret Tickets

You can save 15% by booking online . There are different packages that include transportation, all inclusive food and options for additional activities like the Stingray Encounter and Swim with Dolphins.

The Xcaret Basic admission is $120.99 USD, while Xcaret Plus is $164.99 USD.

You can also purchase Xcaret tickets at most of the resorts in the Riviera Maya, and if you stay at the Xcaret Hote l admission is included.

Xcaret Ticket Price for Children

The admission is free for children under the age of 4. Children ages 5 to 11 get a discounted rate from the adult ticket price. ID is required in both cases.

Accessing your Xcaret tickets after online purchase

When you purchase Xcaret tickets online you will receive a coupon. This means your purchase was completed. This coupon must be printed and presented at the park’s ticket booths, with the signed credit card used for the payment and an official ID. Then, you will receive your access bracelets.

Expect long lines to get your tickets at the Xcaret entrance. Because there are so many vendors, tour operators and hotels selling tickets to guests, it can be a long process.

Get up to a 25% discount on activities and tours in Cancun and Riviera Maya.

How do you get to Xcaret Park?

Getting to Xcaret is easy. If you purchase a package, transportation is often included. Or, you can get a private transfer from your hotel or resort (that’s what we did).

The private transfer will pick you up at your hotel and drive you directly to the park entrance. It will also bring you back to your hotel at a time of your choosing.

We used Cheap Transfer Cancun. We actually used this company multiple times on our vacation to the Riviera Maya . The vans are new and they offer the proper car seat for our 4 year old. We would recommend them. Prices vary depending on distance and number of people. More info here .

We stayed at the Iberostar Del Mar and the trip to Xcaret was about 45 minutes. We paid $100 USD for a private transfer for 6 people (including car seat).

Staying at Hotel Xcaret

Another option is to stay at the all-inclusive Hotel Xcaret , which is connected to the park. This is by far the most convenient resort for Xcaret. The benefit to staying here is that admission to Xcaret parks and/or tours is included in the hotel price.

Read this hotel review to learn more about Hotel Xcaret. Hotel Xcaret is a 5 star property so you’ll want to compare prices to find the best deal.

We visited XCaret a few weeks ago. To say that it’s beautiful doesn’t do it justice! The staff is friendly and knowledgeable. Every question was greeted with a smile and useful answer with suggestions. The food is scrumptious and authentic. Please taste the molé and flan. You won’t regret it! The activities are unique and fun for all ages. Never a dull moment everywhere you go. The evening show, Spectacular Mexico, is a definite must-see! You will learn everything about the Mayan history and Mexico’s culture from it’s early beginnings that encompasses every state in the country. It will make you laugh. It will make you cry. It will make you love Mexico’s culture. It really takes 2 days to enjoy and experience everything. Wear comfortable shoes and swimwear underneath light clothes. You will WANT to get wet and jump into every watering hole. Just delightful!

We just booked our trip and are staying at the Occidental at Xcaret which is right next door to the park. My question is, can you enter and exit the park throughout the day or is it as soon as you leave you are done?

My husband and I will want to do a lot of things, but could also see us wanting to pop back to the resort next door for meals, shower, etc. but then go back for dinner show at Xcaret. Is this feasible?

We just got back 2 days ago from our family trip in the Riviera Maya. Xcaret park is amazing and yes you definitely need 2 days to cover all the park, we were able to go in and out as we pleased to any of the parks along with transportation but we stayed at Hotel Xcaret México (best decision it’s beautiful) which includes all the parks even Chichenitza one of the seven wonders of the world.

Followed your post. Got good tips. We are here now. We are staying at Hotel Xcaret. NOT Occidental. The hotel resort itself is only 1yr old. This place is is amazing. I booked this because i never heard of an ALL inclusive that included ALL PARKS and Tours. This included buffet food at the parks. The hotel is built into the environment and ecologically responsible. This was one our 1st all inclusives and i dont think anything will come close to this in awhile.

This place is incredible. If you can stay in Hotel Xcaret its worth every penny. You may need at least 5 days to see this area.

I was just there, for my first time, since moving to Playa del Carmen, over four years ago. LOVED IT!!! (I am a resident of Quintan Roo so I was able to purchase a one year pass-card for free admission to Xcaret for a year, as many times as desired. I will certainly be using it a LOT.

I brought a 1 liter bottle of water only half full to refill at the free water-refill stations throughout the park. That was suggested to me, the day before when I confirmed my ticket with official park office. She also advised taking only a small towel for drying off.

My friend, a Canuck, and a resident of QR, too, brought a giant beach towel and it really added a lot of weight to her back pack.. We are old broads and there is a lot of walking especially making ones way over to the beach area.

Thanks for the information, it really helps us plan. Wondering what time the show starts (sorry you missed it). Is there plenty of seating or do you have to get there early? Do you have to bring your own water or can you get it there? Thanks!

07/09/2019 at 9:28 am

The horse show is at 6, and the evening show is at 7. When we were watching the horse show, we did see a lot of people walking to get seats for the evening show. I think they will always have room, but if you want the prime seats then it’s best you go a bit early.

We did bring a bottle of our own water into the park. They didn’t ask to check our bags.

Our 4 year old will get free admission, but how much will they charge for his lunch?? (we will get Xcaret plus with lunch included)

My assumption is that if you get lunch included, so will your child. But you’d need to confirm with Xcaret.

Park Xcaret Tips & Tricks Before Your Visit

xcaret visit plan

Before you visit Xcaret Park , it’s important to understand what it is and what it isn’t. You can think of XCARET! Park kind of like a Mexico theme park, but instead of focusing on illustrated characters and thrill rides the attractions are centered around Mayan culture and Yucatán peninsula wildlife. That doesn’t mean it’s all fake: the Mayan ruins within the park are genuine remnants of the ancient seaport town, while the cemetery contains recreations of unique and colorful graves from around Mexico. Visiting Xcaret isn’t a substitute for exploring the Yucatan peninsula but it’s an extremely fun way to get a taste of the Indigenous culture and nature. It’s part theme park, part eco park, and part water park. A good way to describe it is the Xcaret adventure park!

xcaret visit plan

Expect crowds, especially during holiday periods. We visited the week before Christmas and it felt packed. The crowd was a mix of Mexicans and Americans with a smattering of other nationalities thrown in. It’s popular with everyone who vacation in the area, especially those visiting Riviera Maya with kids! If your travel crew includes any small children, be sure to explain to them how important it is to stick together. If you’re blessed with a runner, you may need to use all the tricks up your sleeve!

Try to arrive as close to opening as possible – 8:30 as of this writing. It won’t be as crowded and you’ll be able to see and do more!

Xcaret Park Tickets

If possible, buy your tickets in advance rather than buying Xcaret tickets at the door. We didn’t because we’d had some stomach upset in the family and weren’t confident everyone would be up for such a big day, and it cost us an extra $10 per adult and $5 per kid. Ouch! Sometimes you can even get additional promotions here. In addition, the line to enter was quite long – about 20 minutes. There are also additional ticket booths inside, and you can try your luck with those to see if they’re faster.

Annoyingly, you have to walk alllllllll the way through the gift shop to enter. This is an easy place to get separated, especially with small kids. If you have young ones who can’t resist the power of a souvenir, you may want to carry them. Just power through and find the exit so you can get to enjoying the park!

What to Bring to Xcaret Park

xcaret visit plan

Prepare to walk a ton! We clocked about 15k steps. I was fine in my favorite flip flops because they’re very supportive but if you have grumpy feet, wear something comfortable.

Wear your swim suit instead of (or under) regular clothes. My daughter and I wore two-piece suits topped with a rash guard and shorts, while the boys wore trunks and rash guards. That saved us time so that we didn’t have to change for water activities. We packed everyone’s dry clothes and our travel towels in these wet bags , so at the end of the day we had the perfect spot to store our wet swimsuits.

xcaret visit plan

Bring sunscreen and bug repellant. We made it just fine with a single application of sunscreen, but if we’d spent more time in the afternoon sun we probably would have reapplied. We didn’t find the mosquitos too vicious but perhaps that’s because we preemptively wiped our legs down with these . They’re super handy and I just wish I’d done another round in the late afternoon!

There are water bottle filling stations everywhere. Just bring one bottle – I recommend this insulated bottle , which we bring everywhere!

xcaret visit plan

If you plan to experience the underground rivers (which you should) I recommend bringing a waterproof pouch for your smartphone . You’ll definitely want Xcaret park photos and videos of the experience!

Xcaret Activities: The Best Things To Do In Xcaret

xcaret visit plan

There’s a giant Xcaret park map when you enter with a QR code. Open it and save it to your phone. You’ll need it! We found the park to be pretty confusing to navigate, even with the map. There are signs everywhere but they don’t always work out exactly as you plan. We managed to get ourselves lost a few times unfortunately and definitely burned some much-needed time that way.

two scarlet macaws on a perch at Xcaret Park in Playa del Carmen, Mexico

The different zones are broken up by colored lines on the ground. Our recommended Xcaret park itinerary is to start your day with the white line, which takes you to the Mayan Village (including the birds, butterflies and jaguars). Pro tip: start with the aviary when you get here. There’s strong directionality to it and it feeds you in to the butterflies. Of course don’t miss the cultural attractions in this section as well! Next, try to find your way to the blue line for aquatic creatures. Then hook up the the green line (Playa) to make your way to the “snack bar.” After lunch, go back toward the park entrance to begin the underground river.

xcaret visit plan

Speaking of snack bar… clearly the definition isn’t the same as in America. This is a sit-down eatery with waiters bringing hot food and cold drinks. It can be extremely hard to find, but is worthwhile. Why? Because in the blue section you’ll encounter an extremely crowded buffet restaurant that charges $35 USD per person (same for kids) for a crowded and heavy buffet lunch. By contrast, the snack bar offers a la carte option like chicken fajitas for $10 USD and a hamburger for $12 USD. It also has a fantastic view out to the water! It can be hard to find but it’s worthwhile if you’re put off by Xcaret food prices; just follow the green line and if you aren’t sure, ask a staff member. Note that guests of Hotel Xcaret have access to the buffet for free and it’s also included in the Xcaret Plus package.

xcaret visit plan

Don’t plan to do everything, you’d really need two days for that. The Mexico Xcaret park offers far too much to fit in one day! We plan to return again a different year to experience even more. For example, our kids were really excited to do the cacao workshop, but it’s a 45 minute experience and the timing wouldn’t have worked out for us this time. We didn’t make it anywhere near the Children’s World either!

xcaret visit plan

One activity we deliberately skipped (and we hope you will too) is Xcaret’s extensive dolphin encounter program. They have several options that range from hanging out in the water with dolphins in a group of 10 people to actually riding on the dolphins. We don’t consider ourselves zealots, but can’t get on board with that kind of forced up-close animal interaction. If you’re on the fence, please research carefully before you book one of these experiences. Our kids were pretty upset to see the dolphins being handled by other visitors.

We brought our own snorkel gear, but honestly the snorkeling inlet (near the snack bar, in the green section) didn’t look that great. It’s also extremely crowded and when we walked to the steps fully geared up we could see that there were very few fish. We didn’t end up using our gear despite lugging it around all day. When we return to Xcaret in the future, I’ll consider the add-on snorkel tour that goes out to the reef. We’re probably just spoiled by all of our experiences snorkeling on Oahu and Big Island but we couldn’t get excited about this one, and our snorkel tour on Isla Mujeres the following week was a much better experience.

xcaret visit plan

The family favorite was the underground river. If your kids are school age on up (or you’re going without kids), don’t miss this! It worked well as our last daytime activity, but you really need to allow yourself tons of time for it. We went from beginning (near the park entrance) to end (right back at the playa) and wouldn’t have done it any other way but in total all of the preparation, swimming and then changing afterwards will take you at least an hour and a half – it took us a little longer even since we lingered.

You need to go down to the river entrance first to deposit your belongings. Go to the cashier in the center and pay to rent a bag and fins. Trust me, you want the fins! Life jackets are free. Additional snorkel gear isn’t necessary. You’ll put everything you don’t want to take in the water in the giant bag – we just put our whole backpack in there along with our flip flops. Keep your phone with you in its waterproof pouch ! They gave us a locker key but we didn’t bother with it, as we had the only key to the bag (Ronnie wore it around his neck). Thankfully the bag gets transported up to the end of the river so that you’re met with your flip flops and towels! When you’re done there are changing rooms through the gift shop, and feel free to enjoy the stunning views at the top from a hammock while you warm up.

At least during our visit, most of the live performances were late in the day – around 5-5:30pm. Unfortunately that means you’ll have to choose what you want to see. Those shows do get busy, so you may have to jockey for position if you don’t arrive in advance. We opted to watch the horse exhibition, which was wonderful and featured live mariachis and bilingual narration.

Xcaret Mexico Espectacular

xcaret visit plan

Speaking of jockeying for position… the evening spectacular begins at 7, but I recommend that your group starts heading that direction after you finish watching the live performance. Catch a glimpse of the horses as they cool down, poke into the art museum and church and slowly make your way to the massive open-air theater. There are costumed performers along the way showcasing Mayan costumes and music, so take your time as you go. Unless you’ve purchased dinner or an Xclusive ticket, seating is first-come, first-served.

If you don’t purchase dinner, there are snacks available for purchase as you enter the theater. Most of them weren’t that great (especially the paletas and nachos), so I’d save your money. The popcorn is a solid option and you can buy it from your seat with pesos before the show begins.

xcaret visit plan

The evening spectacular at Xcaret eco theme park runs 7-9pm, which is prime dinner time at most resorts. Even if your resort serves food until 10, staying until the end of the show guarantees a massive crowd upon departure – through the park, the gift shop and the parking lot. I can’t imagine being able to stay for the entire show and still arriving in time for dinner. We left shortly after intermission during the state-by-State cultural performances. I was sad to miss some of them, but we walked through the positively empty park and faced no challenges getting our car out. We made it back to our hotel just in time for dinner! Next time we go, I’d book the dinner package and stay for the evening to avoid stressing about it.

Everything You Need to Know About Visiting Xcaret Parks

Rosie Bell

These adventurous eco-parks celebrate Mexico’s diversity as vibrantly as Disneyland celebrates fairy tales.

Riviera Maya is a collection of distinctive seaside locales along the Yucatán Peninsula’s northeast shore. This belt of Caribbean charm includes Puerto Morelos and its well-preserved reefs and Akumal which is celebrated for its turtle-encounter experiences. The Mexican-owned Xcaret Group eco-parks in Riviera Maya make brilliant use of this verdant terrain by providing immersive land and water experiences ranging from snorkeling in clear underground rivers and driving amphibious vehicles through caves to zip-lining over jungles and enjoying one of the world’s largest butterfly pavilions.

The Xcaret Group (pronounced “ish-ka-ret”) has a formidable presence in Riviera Maya and it’s a name you’ll encounter frequently from the moment you touch down at Cancún International Airport, the main gateway to the region . The riveting park portfolio is made up of Xcaret, Xavage, Xplor, Xplor Fuego, Xenses, Xenses Insomnia, Xoximilco, and the Xel-Há water park which has cenotes, iridescent scarlet macaws, and a 131-foot lighthouse slide.

Each park is a self-contained excursion providing an interactive look at Mexico’s cultural and natural richness. In addition to the thrilling parks, the group also runs Xcaret Xpeditions (Xichén, Xenotes, Tulum, and Cobá), Xcaret Xailing (ferry and catamaran trips to Cozumel and Isla Mujeres), and has three outstanding hotels for park guests to lodge at with over 1,800 rooms between them. Here is a definitive guide to Riviera Maya’s Xcaret parks, known to some as Mexico’s answer to Disneyland .

Launching in 1990, the 200-acre Xcaret eco-archaeological theme park was the first in the family, blending modern ecotourism with Mexican heritage. With over 50 cultural and nature-focused attractions nestled within lush jungle surroundings, visitors young and old can float through grottoes, visit a Mayan village, lay on a white sand beach, and meet a host of winged, furry, and feathered friends: jaguars, parrots, flamingos, tapirs, howler monkeys, and over 20 species of butterflies at the 37,673-square-foot Butterfly Pavillion.

Located just under four miles south of Playa del Carmen , this flagship Xcaret park also has a coral reef aquarium, a Mexican folk-art museum, and a pre-Hispanic ball game court as well as restaurants celebrating moreish cuisine from Jalisco to Veracruz. The park’s unmissable highlight is the nightly Xcaret México Espectacular show when over 300 performers take to the stage to vividly narrate Mexico’s history through music and dance. Xcaret’s daily hours of operation are 8:30 am to 10 pm.

As with all the group’s parks, there are discounts to be had when buying Xcaret tickets online at least 14 days before your intended visit. A 20% discount applies when purchasing tickets for three or more Xcaret Group parks or tours at once. Roundtrip transportation from your hotel is available at an additional cost.

Spend the day with your nearest and dearest at Xel-Há which means the “place where water is born” in Mayan. This all-inclusive water park invites families, friends, and water lovers to snorkel with nearly 100 fish species in mangrove-surrounded rivers, cenotes, and inlets that are fed by both fresh and seawater. You can zipline into the water, float leisurely down a lazy river, or pose for photos with guacamayas (scarlet macaws) admiring their brilliant plumage up close. For a panoramic view of the fetching jungle surroundings, climb the park’s scenic 131-foot lighthouse before descending via one of four water slides.

Xel-Há is around 15 minutes away from the Tulum Archeological Zone by car and is actively committed to sustainability. The park has earned EarthCheck Gold Certification for its environmental practices like water treatment and solid waste recycling. Visitors are encouraged to use biodegradable sunscreen (without ingredients like butyl carbamate, benzophenone, and polyethylene) so as not to contaminate the waters of the Yucatán Peninsula. Upon entry, Xel-Há will swap any offending sunblock you have with its own biodegradable SPF free of charge. Your sunscreen will be returned before you leave at the 6 pm closing.

Xavage dares visitors to embrace their wild sides through a variety of heart-pumping activities like kayaking, rafting, getting wet at a splash zone with hanging bridges and water slides, and an intense four-level ropes course which are all part of the basic entry package. The all-inclusive package includes three extra activities—monster trucks, a 65-foot-high zipline, and an exhilarating ride on a 10-person jet boat through narrow canals. “Xnacks,” buffet lunches, and unlimited non-alcoholic drinks are always part of the deal, and best of all, this full spectrum of excitement is just 10 minutes from Cancún International Airport and open every day from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m.

Xenses and Xenses Insomnia

It’s worth setting aside half a day to experience Xenses which can best be described as a fun optical illusion park. At this creative playground, reality blends with fantastical illusions across over 50 mind-bending scenarios and there are two main paths to explore: the Path of Feeling and the Path of Doing. The former allows you to navigate through varied environments—from complete darkness to a vibrant garden—relying on senses other than sight. The latter tests your sense of orientation and balance in a whimsically constructed village where gravity seems askew.

You will certainly be getting wet at Xenses so comfortable beachwear, towels, and a change of clothes are advised. Typically only available as a daytime excursion, Xenses extended its opening hours with the launch of Xenses Insomnia night park in March 2024, granting entry to curious visitors (over five years old) between 5:30 pm and 11 pm every day except Sunday.

Xplor and Xplor Fuego

Xplor by Xcaret is the park that caters the most to adrenaline pursuits. It is located between Playa del Carmen and Puerto Aventuras near Xenses and the main Xcaret park and has the tallest ziplines in Riviera Maya. There are 14 ziplines soaring up to 45 meters high and spanning over two miles across two circuits complete with refreshing water landings. Down below there are amphibious vehicle circuits, stalactite river swims, spelunking hikes, and lockers to secure all belongings while you play away.

As part of the all-inclusive experience at Xplor, two smoothie stations complement Troglodita restaurant where a robust buffet service is provided though no alcoholic beverages are served to maintain the focus on wholesome fun. Five is Xplor’s minimum age for entry (ID cards must be provided for age verification purposes) and it is open from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Monday to Saturday with an additional nighttime experience, Xplor Fuego , that keeps the fun going until 11:30 p.m.

If you can’t make it to the floating gardens of Mexico City , Xcaret’s Xoximilco in Cancún is the next best thing. As traditional trajineras carry you under the starlit sky through canals, you’ll be treated to authentic Mexican dishes and the jubilant sounds of mariachi and other regional music under the watchful eye of a charismatic host. Xoximilco operates from Monday to Saturday with festivities kicking off at 7:00 pm (last boarding is at 8:30 pm). Tickets include dinner, unlimited drinks from a generous open bar, and live music performances, and it’s ideal for family outings or festive feasts with friends.

The Xcaret Group Hotels

The Xcaret Group has a trio of exceptional hotels, Hotel Xcaret Mexico , Hotel Xcaret Arte , and La Casa de la Playa , which are seamlessly integrated into the “All-Fun Inclusive” program. This grants guests unfettered access and complimentary transport to all of Xcaret’s parks and tours throughout Riviera Maya. While most Xcaret hotel dining experiences are included, two gourmet restaurants— Xaak at Hotel Xcaret Arte and Ha’ at Hotel Xcaret Mexico which is overseen by Michelin-starred chef Carlos Gaytán—come at an additional cost. Similarly, the indulgent experiences at Muluk Spa are not covered under the program and require separate payment.

Hotel Xcaret Mexico opened in 2017 as the group’s first property spanning 900 suites across five architecturally distinct buildings that adhere to a universal element theme: Spiral, Wind, Water, Earth, and Fire. The resort also has a plethora of family-friendly options including the Xiquillos Kids Club and a creatively designed aquatic playground.

Adults-only Hotel Xcaret Arte is also a 900-suite marvel. The resort is organized into five Casas, each representing a different artistic discipline like textile, dance, painting, and pottery, allowing guests to get their creative juices flowing. Additionally, each element within the hotel—from the furniture to fixtures—is crafted by Mexican artisans.

La Casa de la Playa , the newest of the bunch, opened in 2021 with 63 waterfront suites that all boast private plunge pools, jellyfish habitats, and hammock-adorned terraces. Guests at this beautiful boutique property also have access to personal butler service and around-the-clock gourmet offerings from a master chocolatier.

How to Xcaret: A guide to plan your day of activities at Xcaret

  • 11 minute read

xcaret finale espectacular show

  • March 11, 2020

Before we went to Xcaret, we had a hard time finding information about how to plan the order of our day’s activities. So, here is the information that we wish we had that will help you get a plan together for your perfect day at Xcaret! This article will help you order your activities , discover the shows and workshops available , learn how to get cheap tickets and also to decide whether you want to get food or transport included.

What is Xcaret?

I’d describe it as equal parts animal park, water park and Mexican cultural celebration/demonstration. Some people say it’s like Disneyland. It’s really not. It’s a beautiful park with an emphasis on conservation and preservation of the local culture, flora and fauna. The park is suitable and interesting for all ages.

If you only have one day in this area of Mexico, Xcaret is a fantastic place to get a taste of the region’s delights. You can go snorkelling, swim in underground rivers, see animals from the region, learn about Mayan traditions, see ruins and watch an authentic Mexican show.

How to plan your day at Xcaret

What is each route all about.

  • Black route – has the three rivers and a random selection of animals and ruins.
  • Blue route – has all the sea animal enclosures.
  • Green route – snorkelling and the beach.
  • Red route – natural pools and paid beach activities.
  • White route – Mayan cultural structures and butterflies, birds and jaguar enclosures.
  • Brown route – the grand theatre, the scenic tower and Mexican art.

What are the must-do activities at Xcaret?

  • Evening show from 7pm to 9pm.
  • Underground rivers. We did the Mayan river, as recommended by our guide as the river that are displayed in Xcaret’s promotional pictures. There are three rivers, and each one takes 45 minutes. The first half of the Mayan route is uneventful, but the second half goes through the stained-glass plaza, a bat cave, photo opportunities and a Mayan statue.
  • Ceremony of the Voladores and Flying with Eagles. Arrive there just before 11am, the Flying with Eagles show immediately follows the Voladores. Both shows are super interesting.
  • Pre-Hispanic Dances in the Mayan village.
  • Admire the turtles, manatees, sharks and dolphins. Xcaret offer interactive activities with the dolphins and sharks, if you’re interested in them.

Is one day enough at xcaret.

It depends, you may prefer to get the two-day pass (second day half price) if you have plenty of time. If you stay at their hotel, you can access the park whenever you like for free, so this could be a relaxing way to explore Xcaret without having to cram it all into one day. For example, the beach area looked really lovely, but with limited time, we didn’t stop to enjoy it.

I left feeling like there was still more to enjoy at Xcaret, but we were still satisfied with what we had seen. We arrived at 10am and I would recommend getting there earlier to get more done.

To get the most from one day:

  • Do only one river. The river ends at the beach, so you’ll then explore the red, green or blue route, or return back down the black route to get changed if you do the rivers at the end of the day.
  • Skip beach and snorkel activities if you’re going to spend time on the beach in Mexico or go snorkelling at Akumal. This means you can entirely ignore the red and green routes.
  • Do a maximum of one paid activity .
  • Plan which shows or workshops you want to attend, then plan your day around them.
  • Skip the scenic tower. You don’t get much of a view because (and this is a good thing) the park is almost entirely covered by trees. The tower ride takes about ten minutes and you have to walk down to the end of the park to where the evening show takes place, so there’s a time-suck there.

view of xcaret from tower

What’s the best order of activities?

The Xcaret representative we met when we arrived recommended to start with the rivers, then explore the blue, black, red and green routes doing what interests you, then spend the last two hours of the day in the white and brown routes. She recommended arriving at 6:30pm for the 7pm show.

Xcaret Itinerary (what we did)

  • 10:30 am Scenic tower to get the lay of the land (suggest skipping this)
  • 10:45 am Check into Plus lockers, put clothes and shoes away and get changed into swimwear and swim shoes
  • 11:00 am Watch Voladores and Flying Eagles
  • 11:45 am Choose a river to swim along (definitely have your towel sent to the end of the rivers)
  • 1:00 pm Have a snack and relax in the natural pools
  • 1:30 pm Walk along the black route to see bats and manatees
  • 2:00 pm Start the blue route and see the turtles and other sea life
  • 3:00 pm Get changed into clothing
  • 3:15 pm Late lunch at Mexican buffet (wouldn’t really recommend this restaurant)
  • 4:15 pm Explore the white route and catch the 5:00 pm Pre-Hispanic dances
  • 6:15 pm Walk along to the theatre for the evening show

Overall, I wish we came earlier to have more time for the white (Mayan) route as it was extremely interesting, and also to feel less rushed to see everything we wanted to see.

how to plan day baby turtles xcaret

Day Plan at Xcaret with an early start

  • Arrive as early as you can and start with the blue, green and red routes. Allow two hours or more if you do an activity.
  • 11:00 am Voladores and Flying with Eagles. You do see a simplified version of the Voladores in the evening show, so skip this if there’s other things you’d rather do.
  • 12:00 pm Do the rivers
  • 1:00 pm Chill on the beach and have lunch or walk back down the black route then have lunch
  • 3:30 pm Start the white route. Do a 45-minute workshop, like the Chocolate workshop, which is held every hour on the hour. Don’t miss the Pre-Hispanic dances at 5:00 pm, they are incredible, and you won’t see this in the evening show.
  • 6:15 pm Grab a snack or drink and head down the brown route to the show

relaxing photo spot

Day Plan at Xcaret with a Paid Activity

  • Arrive as early as you can
  • 9:00 am Start with a river
  • 10:00 am Do a paid activity
  • 12:00 pm Lunch on the beach
  • 1:00 pm Explore the blue and black routes
  • 3:00 pm Start the white route. Do one or two 45-minute workshops and watch the Pre-Hispanic dances.
  • 6:00 pm Watch the Horse Exhibition
  • 6:20 pm Grab a snack or drink and head down the brown route to the show

Think about the three elements of the park: animals, water and Mexican culture. If one of them doesn’t interest you, don’t allocate your time to it. You’ve visited cenotes already? You could skip the river, or save it as a back up if you have time. If you haven’t gone snorkelling but have been to an aquarium before, skip the blue route and do the green route!

ritual ceremony of voladores xcaret

What are the performances?

There are several shows during the day. Pick the ones that interest you, then plan your day around them. I highly recommend the shows we saw; the Ritual Ceremony of the Voladores, Flying with Eagles, Pre-Hispanic Dances and the evening show.

Harp Recital (45 mins)

  • 9:00 am and 10:00 am every day except Tuesday.
  • La Ordíquea Restaurant, in the park’s entrance.

Ritual Ceremony of the Voladores (20 mins)

  • 11:00 am, 1:00 pm, 3:00 pm every day.
  • Near the Plus lockers, on the black route, five minutes’ walk from the entrance.

Flying with Eagles (20 mins)

  • 11:15 am every day.

Dance of the Owl (5 mins)

  • 4:45 pm every day, depending on the season.
  • At the white route caves entrance.

Pre-Hispanic Dances (25 mins)

  • 5:00 pm every day.
  • In the heart of the Mayan village, on the white route.

Water Bottle Chimes (45 mins)

  • In the museum on the brown route.

Folkloric Exhibition (20 mins)

  • 5:30 pm every day.
  • In the open-air theatre, on the blue route, where it meets the black route.

Horse Exhibition (20 mins)

  • 6:00 pm every day.
  • Near the park entrance, where the black, brown and white routes converge.

Pre-Hispanic Welcome (50 mins)

  • Not a show, but along the route to the theatre for the evening show, the performers from the Pre-Hispanic Dances earlier in the day pose for photos and selfies. There is live traditional music.

Xcaret México Espectacular (2 hours)

  • 7:00 pm every day (arrive at 6:30 pm)

ancient ball game show

What are the workshops?

They’re held in the Mayan village, in the white route, and they all last 45 minutes. The workshops are on different subjects on each theme. For example, the coconut workshops could be on braiding coconut leaves, or using the coconut milk. Check that the time slot is going to happen on the day you are there. We noticed a listed workshop that didn’t seem to be running.

  • Chocolate Workshop – hourly from 10:30 am to 5:30 pm
  • Coconut Workshop – 10:00 am, 12:00 pm, 2:00 pm, 4:00 pm
  • Wool Workshop – 10:00 am, 12:00 pm, 4:00 pm, 5:00 pm
  • Ceramics Painting Workshop – 11:00 am, 12:00 pm, 1:00 pm, 4:00 pm, 5:00 pm
  • Clay Workshop – 11:00 am, 12:00 pm, 3:00 pm, 4:00 pm, 5:00 pm
  • Bead Workshop – 1:00 pm, 3:00 pm, 4:00 pm, 5:00 pm

Tips for your day at Xcaret Park

Do you need water shoes to visit xcaret.

No. Flip flops or sneakers are fine. Make sure you put them in the bag to meet you at the end of the river. If you don’t enjoy swimming with fins (provided for free), then wear water shoes to protect your feet from the rivers.

dance at xcaret show

Is it worth staying for the Xcaret evening show?

Yes! The first half showcases two ancient games, the Mayan ball game and hockey with a flaming ball. Then it tells the story of the Spanish conquest. There is a ten-minute intermission, and then the second half begins. The second half includes the ceremony of the Voladores and a collection of songs and dances from all around Mexico. The show finishes with a grand Mariachi medley. It’s a fantastic and high-quality show that will excite every age.

Only want to go for the evening show?

This is an option, with the discounted evening ticket to Xcaret . You can enter the park from 4:00 pm. This will give you enough time to explore one route, like floating along one of the rivers or exploring the white Mayan route before heading on to the evening show.

Can you take food and drink into Xcaret?

water refill stations

No one checked our bags and there isn’t a specific area set up for bag checking. We took in avocado sandwiches, protein bars and water bottles.

There are water fountains for drink bottles around the park, so you can refill your drink bottle during the day.

There are drinks and snacks available in the park, and they aren’t priced extortionately. The big Stax chips cans (like Pringles but also gluten free) are 80 pesos and soft drinks (‘refrescos’) are around 45-60 pesos. These are easy, albeit unhealthy, options to sustain you through the evening show.

Is the Plus package worth it?

We felt it was average value for money. Since we didn’t do snorkelling, we didn’t get to take advantage of the value of the free snorkel hire (you only get snorkels at the beach, there is no snorkelling in the rivers). If you’re set on a buffet lunch, it may be worth it for you. They’re about 650 pesos per person if you just go on the day.

You can choose from lots of buffet restaurants. We ate our buffet lunch at La Cocina, the Mexican buffet. The quality of the food extremely disappointed us. The meat was good, but it was the worst Mexican food we had eaten all trip. We were expecting to try a variety of Mexican food, but we felt there was a limited variety. The guacamole for example, was awful. It was the kind that is manufactured and sold in supermarkets, with that fake texture and flavour. This surprised us given that avocados are only 60 pesos per kilogram in the supermarket, and we’ve had amazing guacs all around the Yucatan peninsula.

Verdict: If you will eat good Mexican food during your stay, go to a different buffet. If you’re staying in Playa, some good Mexican restaurants we ate at are Axiote, Micaela’s, Porfirio’s, El Fogon and Zitla’s. They can all cater to celiac/coeliac disease.

How do you get to Xcaret?

I’d recommend taking a taxi. But here’s your summary of options:

  • Take a colectivo there for 25 pesos pp. There’s a shuttle to take you from the highway to the entrance. You must catch a taxi back, however, if you’re going home after the evening show.
  • Take a taxi. Just flag one down on the street. 250 pesos is the standard 1-4-person taxi cost between Xcaret and Playa del Carmen. The Cabify app can be helpful to get a taxi from your accommodation if you’re not staying somewhere where taxis are accessible. The Cabify price is between 250 and 300 pesos from Playa del Carmen to Xcaret.
  • Self-drive. Keep in mind it’s not recommended to drive in the dark in Mexico, so do this at your own risk.
  • Take the Xcaret transportation. This is an expensive option (500 pesos pp for return to Playa del Carmen) and not as convenient as a taxi.

Are there discounts for tickets to Xcaret?

You are always eligible for up to 15% off at Xcaret’s website .

Yes, check their promotions page .

Otherwise, don’t pre-book and just go haggle on Fifth Ave with the ticket sellers. Despite our best planning, we ended up unable to access a printer so ended up buying tickets from a street seller. We got our Xcaret Plus tickets with return transport included for 2,350 pesos per person (that’s 25% off the Xcaret website price). Didn’t need any promotional code or special credit card. The only catch was that they needed us to pay in cash, so we had to make a quick trip to the ATM on 10 th before purchasing and it made for a later start in the day than we had originally planned.

Do I have to print my ticket?

If you buy online, you have to present a printed ticket but try downloading the app and buying your tickets on the app, because this is the only way they will accept your phone ticket at the park.

How to pronounce the Xcaret park names

If you’re not sure how to pronounce the Xcaret park names, you’re not alone!

I’ll never forget how hard my Mexican friends laughed at me the first time I tried to say “Xcaret” 😂

But I quickly learned the key to pronouncing Xcaret park names is to sound out the ‘X’ as either “s” or “sh”.

  • Xcaret = Ish-ka-ret
  • Xel-Ha = Shell-Ha
  • Xplor = Ish-plor
  • Xavage = Sha-vage
  • Xenses = Shen-ses
  • Xoximilco = So-chee-meel-koh
  • Xibalba = She-bal-ba
  • Xenotes = Shay-know-tays
  • Xichen = She-chen

How Much Do Xcaret Park Tickets Cost?

Xcaret prices vary between each park and can range from $70 USD-$175 USD per person. It’s best to check the official park websites for the most accurate prices.

I’ve also outlined additional ways to save in the next section.

Sea Trek at Xel Ha Xcaret Park

  • ⭐️ KNOWN FOR : Water Activities, Water Slides, Snorkeling
  • 🏆 BEST FOR: Adults and Families with Older Children
  • 🕘 PARK HOURS : Daily from 8:30AM–6:30PM

Known for aquatic adventures, Xel-Ha Park has a prime location around an inlet of the Caribbean Sea, which yields the best water activities.

Boardwalks and the Jungle Train connect all the cenotes, caves, hidden beaches, and hammock gardens. In the center lies an expansive “pool”, where red flags mark areas rich in marine life.

While swimming and snorkeling take the spotlight, this Xcaret water park isn’t just a large natural aquarium. Manmade slides, high jumps, and water ziplines add dimension to the park.

Snorkeling at Xel Ha Park

There’s even a mile-long float down the river. For land activities, check out the manatee sanctuary and Mayan port city ruins.

Definitely climb the Scenic Lighthouse water slide for panoramic views over the park!

You can read my full Xel Ha review for all the details!

Travelista Tip:  Xel-Ha is the only Xcaret park that includes unlimited alcohol so it’s one of the best Xcaret parks for adults if you’re looking for a fun adults waterpark experience with a group of friends.

Xplor Zipline

  • ⭐️ KNOWN FOR : Ziplining, ATVs
  • 🕘 PARK HOURS : Monday-Saturday from 9:00AM–5:00PM

Xplor is the first Xcaret park I ever visited and still remains one of my favorites, offering ziplines, underground caves, and ATV experiences.

Xplor by Xcaret takes you deep into the Riviera Maya jungle landscape, where naturally carved gorges are hidden within dense forest.

The sky-high zipline course was what propelled Xcaret Xplor onto the lists of “best adventure parks in Mexico”, letting you skim above the treetops and take in the views.

Xplor Park

Some of the highest ziplines in Riviera Maya end with a vigorous drop into a cenote so be prepared to get wet!

The newest Underground Expedition activity at Xplor will have you trawling through 800 yards of subterranean trails.

Start by driving an amphibious vehicle through jungle and flooded caves, before the Rafts challenge takes you river paddling through ancient caves.

Xplor Fuego Amphibious Vehicles

  • ⭐️ KNOWN FOR : Nighttime Ziplining, ATVs
  • 🕘 PARK HOURS : Monday-Saturday from 5:30PM–11:00PM

After 5:30PM, Xplor Park transforms into its night-time persona when sunset hits and flickering torches and cackling bonfires signal the arrival of Xplor Fuego .

Basically, Xplor Fuego is the exact same park as Xplor–only at night!

What was scenic fun in day time is now a dramatic and mysterious landscape. It’s kind of like an “extreme night adventure”.

Xplor Fuego Rafts

The same ziplines now show you starry skies, the rainforest becomes strange and haunting, and the underground rivers are illuminated only by fire torches.

End the night at Xplor Fuego with a generous BBQ buffet, and make the most of the nightscape before it closes at 11PM.

Xavage Park

  • ⭐️ KNOWN FOR : Extreme Adventure Activities
  • 🏆 BEST FOR: Adrenaline Junkies
  • 🕘 PARK HOURS : Monday-Saturday from 8:30AM–5:00PM

Located about 45 minutes north of Playa del Carmen, Xavage Park is Xcaret’s newest adventure park.

I’d equate it to an Xcaret park on steroids, since it’s where you’ll find the most adrenaline pumping activities!

Each of the extreme Xavage activities are named after animals:

  • Ropes course (Howler Monkey)
  • Superman-style ziplining (Hawk)
  • White water rafting (Barracuda)
  • Monster trucks (Puma)
  • Kayaking (Crocodile)
  • High speed jet boat experience (Dragonfly)
  • Kids pool (Serpent)

The white water rafting and monster truck course at Xavage are intense – and probably some of the most unique experiences you’ll find at Xcaret theme parks.

The Town at Xenses Park

  • ⭐️ KNOWN FOR : Sense-Themed Activities
  • 🏆 BEST FOR: Budget Travelers or Those Short on Time
  • 🕘 PARK HOURS : Monday-Saturday from 8:30AM–7:00PM

If you haven’t gathered from its name, Xenses by Xcaret is all about challenging your senses – nothing is as it seems.

The unusual world teems with sensory deceptions, starting with an enormous water-jet-supported boulder at the entrance.

The charming streetscapes of Town at Xenses feel like an uphill climb when they’re actually level ground. Xensatorium takes you through forest, desert, and savanna without your sight.

Xenses Bird Flight Zipline

The Bird Flight zipline at Xenses has you flying horizontally while mud rivers float you through stalagmite-dotted caverns.

Don’t forget crazy photo ops either! Take a photo of the clean-water drinking fountain…set inside a toilet.

Xoximilco Xcaret

  • ⭐️ KNOWN FOR : Mexican Floating Fiesta
  • 🏆 BEST FOR: Party Animals
  • 🕘 PARK HOURS : Monday-Saturday from 7:00PM–11:00PM

Located next to Xavage near Cancun, Xoximilco is a literal, floating fiesta!

Not your stereotypical “park”, the Xoximilco tour offers a traditional Mexican party aboard a cruise, a re-creation of the famous Xochimilco attraction outside Mexico City.

The evening begins with carnival games and live performances, followed by a scenic cruise on trajineras (flat-bottomed boats).

Local musical genres such as mariachi and norteño play background music to your Mexican dinner. Dinner is the highlight of this experience, serving tasting platters of traditional foods.

Enjoy ceviche, tamales, Oaxacan chocolate, and more. There’s also an all-night bar which serves alcoholic and fruity beverages.

The Cobá Xcaret tour is combo tour, so you can choose to continue onto Xel-Ha or the Tulum Ruins after Cobá.

Visiting the Xcaret Parks

Here’s the basic visitor information that you should know before visiting the Xcaret adventure parks:

Transportation

The Xcaret eco-parks are spread out across the Riviera Maya region so when planning your experience, you’ll need to consider how you’re going to get to the parks.

On Your Own

To get to each Xcaret park on your own, you can drive or rent a car , hire a taxi, or take the ADO bus (Xcaret and Xel-Ha only). If you drive, free parking is available on-site.

Xcaret Transportation Service

Most people opt for round-trip transportation service for the most hassle free option. Simply add this request at the time of purchase for an Xcaret all inclusive experience.

The Xcaret transportation cost varies by park but is typically around $30 USD per person and picks up from most major hotels in Playa del Carmen .

It’s important to know that transportation can only be added at the time of purchase , so be sure to add this when you’re buying your tickets.

If your hotel is not on the list of affiliated hotels, you’ll be given a list of meeting points where Grupo Xcaret’s official transport will pick you up.

Xcaret Bus Transportation

Food and Drink

Xcaret is known for providing more upscale food and beverage experiences but they differ between the parks.

For instance, Xcaret Park Mexico doesn’t automatically include food and drink in their packages – you have to add it to your purchase.

On the other hand, Xel-Ha offers continental breakfast, lunch buffet, snack bar and open bar (including alcohol).

Likewise, the other Xcaret adventure parks also offer buffet lunch, unlimited snacks and non-alcoholic drinks. And even though most of the restaurants are buffet style, the food is still very good!

Xcaret Buffet

Facilities and Services

The exact amenities vary but you can expect all Xcaret parks to have: rest areas, dressing rooms, lockers, restrooms, WiFi, ATM, and free parking.

Gift shops are located near the entrance where you can purchase Xcaret park photos, souvenirs, clothing, and gear.

Xavage Rest Areas

Xcaret Photos

One of my favorite takeaways from these parks is the Grupo Xcaret photos!

A Photo Pass can be added to your admission package upon purchase, which covers all group photos of up to 10 people. You can pick up your photos at the gift shops.

What’s cool is that there are cameras and “Xelfies” photo opportunities all over the parks.

Tracking technology is inserted in your helmet or wristband so they can track your photos and you’ll be able to scan and review them all at the end of the day.

The photo packages can be expensive but are a great way to capture your memories if you don’t have a GoPro or waterproof camera.

Travelista Tip: It’s cheaper to buy the Xcaret photo packages online when you’re booking your tickets rather than on the day of your visit. If you think you’re going to want park photos, be sure to add this when booking your tickets.

Tips for Visiting Xcaret Parks

To make the most of your Xcaret experience, follow these easy Xcaret tips!

  • Book in advance : You’ll automatically save 15% by booking at least 21 days in advance, or 10% by booking 7-20 days in advance. It’s best to book online ahead of time to get the best deal.
  • Combine the parks to save money : You get 15% to 20% off depending on how many experiences you package together .
  • La Casa de la Playa (adults only)

Hotel Xcaret Mexico

🆚 Related Reading: Hotel Xcaret Mexico vs Hotel Xcaret Arte: Which is better?

  • Get there early and plan for a full day experience: You get to do each activity unlimited times so you’ll want to arrive early to get the most out of the price of your admission.
  • Study the Xcaret parks map: When planning your day, prioritize which activities you are most interested in and plot out a route on the Xcaret park map for maximum efficiency. You’ll also want to plan your meal times around the different activities. For example, some of the more intense activities are not the best on a full stomach!
  • Bring biodegradable sunscreen: Many of the parks are located in natural environments, beaches, and cenotes. Wearing biodegradable sunscreen is essential to protect these natural reserves.
  • Bring a GoPro or waterproof camera: The parks are action-packed and most involve water activities so you won’t be able to use your cell phone to take photos. Bring a GoPro or waterproof camera to capture your memories.
  • Wear water shoes: Pretty much all of the parks involve water activities, so having a pair of water shoes will let you run between water, beach and jungle floor comfortably and quickly.
  • Wear a one-piece swimsuit and activewear: You will most likely be getting wet so I usually always wear a one-piece swimsuit and athletic shorts to be comfortable for all activities.
  • Bring a towel: In addition, you’ll want to bring a beach towel to dry off after the water activities. These microfiber beach towels are a great option because they are super light weight and dry quickly.

Which Xcaret Park is the Best?

So, which is the best Xcaret park? That is a tough question to answer!

Honestly, all of the Xcaret parks are worth visiting and provide tremendous value and unique and unforgettable experiences you won’t find anywhere else in the world.

Of course, everyone will have a different Xcaret park that they like the best depending on personal preferences, whether or not you have kids, or what kind of activities you like.

But if I really had to choose, here’s my list of Xcaret parks ranked:

  • Xibalba (not open yet)

Final Thoughts: Xcaret Parks Explained

I hope this guide to the Mexico Xcaret parks was helpful if you’re interested in visiting one of these thrilling Xcaret adventure parks while visiting Riviera Maya Mexico.

I know it’s a LOT of information to digest but hopefully this Xcaret park guide has given you a better understanding of the overall Xcaret attractions and offerings to find the best Xcaret park for you.

While all the Xcaret theme parks and tours are tremendously fun, Xel-Ha is my personal favorite and the best option for water activities.

But no matter which park you choose to visit, you’re sure to have an amazing time!

Just remember to buy your park tickets on the official Xcaret website ahead of time to get the best deal!

The Ultimate Guide to Exploring Mexico's Xcaret National Park

Xcaret

Mexico’s Xcaret park in Cancun is an eco-extravaganza of things to see and do. Formerly an important Mayan port and town, Xcaret is the size of 40 football fields, and although it has been called Mexico’s Disney World, it’s unique for its insights into traditional Mayan culture and its luxurious location right on the beach.

Xcaret

Prices and Tickets

Entrance to the park is not cheap. Tickets usually cost just over US$100 for adults, and while there any many packages and optional activities available (including swimming with sharks, dolphin rides, and a traditional sweat lodge) most visitors find that the park’s regular activities keep them pretty busy for a day or even two days. The food here is expensive, so our advice is to buy the Xcaret-plus package that includes one meal while you are here. The package also includes free snorkel rental, which you will definitely want to have.

You can also buy tickets more cheaply online or direct through the Xcaret website. Do also remember to bring biodegradable sunscreen with you, or the park will force you to buy their own expensive brands. You can buy combo tickets that will give you access to both Xcaret and other adventure parks in the area such as Xplor , Xel-ha , Xenses , and Xoximilco .

There are several routes suggested by the park for different types of guest. The truth is that you don’t have to follow a route at all, but if you think your interests line up with a certain set of activities, it might be worth letting someone else plan your day. On the Ruta Del Río you will see all kinds of wild creatures up close, as well as archeological sites and an orchid museum; the Ruta Acuario allows you to see and interact with marine life such as sea turtles and sharks; the Ruta Playa focuses on the beach and snorkeling in the clear Caribbean waters; Ruta Delfines has more snorkeling options, lots of relaxing, and spa amenities; the Ruta Pueblo Maya engages guests with the history and culture of the area’s original inhabitants, including the games they played and the way they lived; and the Ruta México Espectacular offers Mexican folk art and the Virgin of Guadalupe Chapel.

Xcaret sea turtles

There are lots of eating options in the park, none particularly cheap, but many good. We suggest that you check out the traditional Mexican restaurants and skip the international food (you came to Mexico for the real thing, right?). El Manglar is probably the most highly recommended, but there are also La Cocina, and Cenas Mexico Espectacular, which is located right next to where the end-of-the-day show is held.

There are snack bars scattered throughout the park that sell cold drinks and simple stuff like hamburgers, and this makes for a slightly cheaper menu than at the full restaurants. You can’t bring food into the park, but you can re-enter if you would like to have a parking lot picnic and then come back. As mentioned above, paying for an Xcaret-plus ticket is a good idea if you know you are going to eat at least one meal here.

Unmissables

You won’t want to miss the incredible water activities available in the park: swimming in underground rivers, snorkeling in the Caribbean, even lying on the beach for a spell – the park’s location make it ideal for water babies of all ages. You also shouldn’t miss the end-of-the-day spectacle, which includes art, dance, music, and lights. It’s an homage to Mexico’s history, from prehistoric times through to today, using music and dance to illustrate the passage of time. The cost of the show is included in every ticket price and it starts at 7 p.m. daily.

Unusual Extras

Xcaret offers a few activities that you won’t be able to get at just any theme park . Though all their optional activities cost extra, if you are looking for a special something to do during your visit, look no further. The Xpá is located in a lagoon surrounded by underground rivers and you have the option of choosing between two different kinds of relaxing massage. The Xcaret Temescal is a ancient indigenous tradition that involves several ritual stages in a sweat lodge to cleanse your mind, body, and spirit, and a cooling swim afterwards. Xcaret also offer wine tasting in their wine cellar, with delicious Mexican wine and food pairings. Adrenalina is a high-speed boat ride out in the Caribbean. There are also a myriad of options for snorkeling, diving, swimming with dolphins and sharks, and visiting underwater landscapes as a couple or a family.

It’s important to get the lay of the land, and for first-time visitors, it’s recommended that you head to the top of the park’s lookout tour to get a sense of the park’s layout. Below is a sneak preview of the park; take a look in advance to help plan your day. You can use credit cards or cash here, and there are ATMs, but we suggest you take you cash out in advance and avoid high transaction fees.

Make sure that you take a look at the day’s shows and events when you arrive, so you can plan you time accordingly. You don’t need to rent a locker if you want to snorkel in the underground rivers, as at the beginning of the route you can lock your things into a bag that only you have a key to, and they will be sent to the end point of your swimming route.

Finally, take time to relax and enjoy the scenery. There is much to see, but don’t spend the whole day running!

Everything You Need to Know About Xcaret Park, Mexico

Xcaret Park Playa del Carmen was the first of six eco-parks in the Mayan Riviera under the Experiencias Xcaret umbrella. It’s also one of the largest theme parks in Mexico. But is it the best park for you? This article covers Xcaret activities, Xcaret tips, Xcaret reviews and Xcaret itineraries.

The aim is to help you decide if Xcaret is your best choice and how to make the most of your time at this exciting theme park.

xcaret visit plan

What is Xcaret Eco-Park?

How to get to xcaret park, xcaret tips for the best park experience, 2. decide how much time you need at xcaret, 3. decide which xcaret tickets to buy, xcaret park itineraries, live dream discover’s xcaret itinerary, nature lovers xcaret itinerary, xcaret itinerary for water lovers, xcaret cultural itinerary, xcaret prices for admission, xcaret discount tickets, what to take to xcaret, xcaret review and final thoughts, more articles that might interest you:.

Xcaret (ish-ka-ret) is a 250-acre theme park with more than 40 attractions. Xcaret activities include adventurous water sports, educational and cultural exhibits, local nature and wildlife attractions and impressive live shows.

Situated just minutes from Playa del Carmen and Tulum it’s one of the most popular attractions in the Riviera Maya of Mexico attracting over a million visitors each year from all over the world.

Due to the size of the park and the abundance of things to do at Xcaret it really does deserve at least two days to see everything. Luckily, Xcaret Park offers multi-day passes as you’ll see below.

However, if all you have time for is one full day you can still hit the main Xcaret attractions and have a fantastic time. Especially if you do a bit of pre-planning with our handy itineraries below.

Xcaret Eco Park mexican Culture, Folklore and Typical Flavors, Underground rivers at Cancun and Riviera Maya.

This depends on whether you are staying in Playa del Carmen or one of the many resorts in Cancun .

  • You can add first-class bus transportation to your admission for $30 USD
  • The local  ADO  bus also makes stops at Xcaret. Check at the Cancun and Playa del Carmen bus stations for the schedule.
  • Collectivos (shared vans) run up and down the main 307 Highway and will stop at Xcaret
  • If you are staying in Playa del Carmen a taxi is a viable option but from a Cancun Airbnb or hotel, it would be about $80-$100 USD
  • If you have a car the drive is quite easy and there is free parking on site.

As we just mentioned, there are so many Xcaret activities that it’s next to impossible to see everything in just one day. This is why planning is a must.

Start with the following tips for planning your visit to Xcaret Park:

Xcaret Beach

1. Study All the Xcaret Activities Available

The first thing we suggest you do in the planning stage is to look at the many Xcaret activities and attractions and decide your priorities.

Do you favor water activities? Does your love of nature top everything else? Or are you really interested in learning more about the Mayan culture ?

Once you’ve determined what your priorities are, take a look at the map of Xcaret park and suggested itineraries for Xcaret adventure park below and create your own day of fun.

Keep in mind that if you are a family or group of four or more and you have different interests you could always split up for the morning/afternoon and set a time to meet for lunch.

If you have the time and money we highly recommend 2 days at Xcaret Park. This way you can spend the first day getting an overview of the park, then return the next day to spend more time on the things you liked the most.

Another reason to go for more than 1 day is that the evening show is a must-see. However, it doesn’t start until late evening and if you’ve been at the park since opening you’ll be too exhausted to enjoy the show.

Having said all that we understand that not everyone can afford to spend two days at Xcaret Park. Not to worry, all of our itineraries below are based on one day at Xcaret.

Xcaret Activities

Now that you’ve decided what Xcaret activities you most want to do and how many days you will be spending, it’s time to buy your Xcaret Park tickets.

There are several options for Xcaret Park tickets and you can find more detail further along in this post. The main thing you need to decide is if you want food and drink or optional activities included. There are various ticket options depending on how much you want to be included.

If you’re interested in visiting any of the other wonderful parks in the Xcaret family be sure to check the Xcaret Packages offered. These packages allow you to purchase admission for two of the parks. For example, you can combine Xcaret and Xel-Ha for a discount price.

Once you’ve gone through the Xcaret tips above you’ll be ready to plan your day. We have been to Xcaret Park many times over the years and we’ve used that experience to create several one-day itineraries.

For a taste of all the park has to offer go with our Live Dream Discover itinerary. But, we’ve also created itineraries that focus on specific Xcaret activities like water sports, nature or culture.

Xcaret Waterfall

Since we enjoy variety and wanted to taste a bit of all Xcaret Park has to offer we created a balanced day by combining little parts of everything that make Xcaret eco theme park special. If that sounds like you then you may want to use our personal Xcaret activities itinerary as a guide.

*Note: Everything on this itinerary is included with the basic Park Admission unless otherwise noted as extra charge.

  • Arrive at 9:00 am
  • Pick up a map and make your way to the events board just inside the park. Some of the shows and events change regularly and you won’t find them online so, therefore, can’t pre-plan. If there is something, in particular, you want to see you’ll have to adjust this itinerary accordingly. We opted to just go to the big evening extravaganza usually about 7:00 pm.
  • The first stop is at the Rotating Scenic Tower (#16 on map) for a spectacular panoramic view of the entire park and out to the Caribbean Sea.
  • About 10:30 am head to the lockers near the beginning of the Underground River (#12 on map) . Here for an extra charge (unless you purchased the Plus ticket) you can get a locker for the day and rent snorkel gear. You can then change into your swimsuit, grab a life vest (free and mandatory) and get ready for the underwater river. As an alternative to the locker, you can put all of your belongings in a large locking dry bag (no charge) which will be transported to the end of the river. We chose to rent a locker for some things (valuables, non-water camera, car keys, extra money etc) and place items in the transit bag that we would want to use at the beach at the end of the river (towel, flip flops, sunscreen, some money etc).
  • To swim/snorkel the underground river to the end takes about 45 min to 1 hour . Be sure to stop at the photo points along the way.
  • Around noon you will emerge from the river at the other end of the park right where it meets the Caribbean Sea (#36 on map) . Here you can pick up your belongings and return your life vest but hold on to your snorkel gear.
  • Follow the black route past the Manatee Lagoon and stay right following signs for the beaches, natural pools and snorkeling inlet (#4 & #21 on map) . This is where you’ll be for the next hour or two. You can snorkel, take part in water activities or simply find a beach chair or hammock to take a nap.
  • Right about now you’ll likely be ready for lunch. There are a couple of restaurants and bars you can eat at (extra charge unless you purchased the Plus ticket) and you can choose a sit-down meal, a buffet or as we did order some fajitas and margaritas at a beach palapa.
  • By this time it should be around 2:00 pm, depending on how long you lingered at the beach.
  • Check your map and start making your way back to your locker. If you want to you can stop along the way to see the turtles (#5), the aquarium (#6), and if your timing is good you may catch the Voladores ceremony (#10) .
  • By about 3:00 pm you’ve returned your snorkel gear and belongings and are dried off and ready for nature and culture time.
  • Check your map and head down the path towards the Cave Route to the Mayan Village (#26) . If you’re timing is right you can check-in at Nature and Culture Tours (#27) or the Pre-Historic Ball Game (#29) . Otherwise, just follow the Cave Route to the Mayan Village.
  • After a look at the Mayan Village you can walk through the Mexican Cemetery (#34) and St Francis of Assisi Chapel (#33) on your way to the Butterfly Pavilion and Aviary (#9) where you should arrive around 4:00 pm if you didn’t stop to take in a ball game or nature tour.
  • The Aviary and Butterfly Pavilion are quite extensive and if you’re enjoying it and taking lots of photos you could be there for at least an hour bringing you to about 5:00 or 5:30 pm
  • Assuming the Mexico Xcaret Espectacular starts at 7:00 pm you should have time for some dinner or snacks. There are many restaurants and snack bars to choose from but we suggest you make your way towards the main theater so that you’re close and can go and get seats right after your meal. If you’re running late or aren’t overly hungry there are snacks like popcorn, hot dogs and ice cream at the theater.
  • Whatever you do, don’t miss the Xcaret show! It truly is spectacular and is worth the price of admission alone. The theater is huge so you’ll usually always get a seat but we still recommend getting there at least 15 minutes before showtime to get good seats. The theater is open-air so there is no AC and as heat rises the lower you sit the cooler you will be. Plus you’ll be close to the action.

xcaret visit plan

If nature is your primary focus and/or you have no desire to swim or snorkel you may want to follow the Xcaret eco theme park Nature Lovers Itinerary which takes in the abundant wildlife, flora and fauna in the park.

  • Start your day the same way as the Live Dream Discover Itinerary but check the schedule for any nature related events to add into your day.
  • Before going to the Rotating Scenic Tower stop in at the Regional Wildlife Breeding Farm (#15) and check-in at Nature and Culture Tours to see if there is a tour you are interested in.
  • After the Scenic Tower stop by the Mushroom Farm (#17) and the Museum of Orchids (#18) before doing the Paradise River Raft Ride (#13)
  • After the raft walk the Tropical Jungle Trail (#19) and visit Spider Monkey Island (#23)
  • In the same vicinity you will find the aquarium, the Tapir’s and the deer shelter
  • By this time you should be ready for lunch so pick a restaurant close by to relax over a tasty meal. Then maybe grab a hammock for a little nap.
  • After lunch and nap you may want to try the exciting Sharks! Hands on Adventure (#40) or the Stingray Encounter (#43) . Note: There is an additional charge for these activities.
  • From there head to the Jaguar Island (#7) before heading to the Aviary and Butterfly Pavilion and Bat Cave (#32) where you will have plenty of time to enjoy the beautiful birds and butterflies.
  • End your day as in the Live Dream Discover itinerary with a meal and the Xcaret Espectacular show.

Water Activities at Xcaret Park Mexico

If you love being in the water it’s easy to spend the whole day exploring the rivers, lagoons and beaches at Xcaret adventure park.

  • Follow the Live Dream Discover Itinerary for the first half of the day.
  • Once you’ve completed the Underground River swim head to the Water Activities Center (#30 on map) to see if there’s anything you want to do.
  • You can spend the rest of the day exploring and playing at the snorkeling inlet, in the natural pools and on the pristine beach.
  • There is also Snuba (#1 & #3), Snorkeling Tours (#1) and a Sea Trek Underwater Walk (#21) for an additional cost.
  • Just make sure to be dried and dressed in time for the show!

xcaret visit plan

If your main interest is in learning more about the local culture there is plenty to keep you busy.

  • Start your day the same as the Live Dream Discover Itinerary however pay extra attention to the posted schedule for cultural shows and cultural Xcaret activities.
  • This itinerary will not be as structured as the others since you’ll want to plan around the showtimes. For this reason, we won’t list the order of things but instead, we just list the must see’s for lovers of culture.
  • The Horse Exhibition is a beautiful display by Mexican charros and adelitas which combines the elements of Mexican horsemanship with typical music and colors of Mexico
  • The ritual ceremony of the “Voladores” (#20) is a custom that expresses respect for nature and the spiritual universe. It’s really beautiful and awe-inspiring to watch. It’s usually on at 11 am, 1 pm and 3 pm but check the schedule for changes.
  • The Pre-Hispanic Dances display the history and culture of these land through music and movement. The dances may change seasonally so check the program for times.
  • The Sacred Mayan Journey recreates the ancient annual pilgrimage the Maya performed in canoes paddling towards the island of Cozumel to worship the goddess Ixchel.
  • Seek out the various archaeological sites around the park to learn more about the history of these ancient people.
  • The Hacienda Henequenera and the Museum of Mexican Folk Art is a representation of typical 19th-century mansion architecture and Mexican handicrafts.
  • The Mexican Cemetery and Bridge to Paradise are great examples of the respect, humor and colorful symbolism that this culture brings to life and death.
  • Emerge from the Xcaret jungle into a replica of an ancient Mayan Village where you can learn about their way of life, social organization, how they build their homes, and what they eat.
  • Of course, you should finish the day with the best display of Mayan Culture at the Xcaret Espectacular Show.

Planning a trip to Mexico? Make sure you don’t forget anything with this checklist on what to pack for a beach vacation !

  • With so many Xcaret activites in the water,  swimsuit  is probably the #1 item on this list
  • Don’t forget a  change of clothes  to put on when you’ve finished your water activities.
  • A  waterproof bag  comes in really handy to carry your phone and some cash.  Click here  to see our favorite phone pouch dry bag.
  • Sunglasses  are a must when you’re on land although you won’t need them when you’re snorkeling.
  • A  waterproof camera is highly recommended as you will be spending some of your time in the water. We captured so many great photos & video at Xcaret with our GoPro and couldn’t imagine traveling without it. The good news is the prices have dropped since we purchased a couple of years ago. Click here  for pricing and reviews.
  • Water shoes  or flip flops are a good idea because you’ll be in and out of the water and having to dry your feet to put on shoes every time is a pain. You can  pick up a good pair  quite inexpensively if you plan ahead.
  • A  hat is a good idea as the Mexican sun is really strong and you don’t want to ruin your day with sunstroke. We love these  waterproof, sunscreen hats  when we travel in hot climates. They are lightweight, durable and fold up into nothing.
  • Eco-friendly sunscreen  is vital at Xel Ha water park, in fact it is required that you only use the  reef safe type . They do sell it at the park but it is more expensive than buying your own before you go. You will need it in other protected areas on the Maya Riviera so it’s definitely worth purchasing a bottle.

Note: Lockers and towels are provided so you can safely store your camera and clothing when not in use.

If you’re interested in some of the other Experiencias Xcaret Parks take a look at our Xel-Ha Itineraries for a great day or snorkeling, fun and relaxation or check out Xplor for a day of adventure.

Xcaret Park Playa del Carmen

We would definitely recommend a day trip to Xcaret when you’re in the Riviera Maya and if you can spare the time we’d even suggest two days. It’s clear why Xcaret is the flagship for the Experiencias group as it has a little bit of everything.

The activities at Xcaret Park are almost endless. You can learn about the Mayan culture and history, see native birds, animals and sealife, snorkel or boat along an underground river, relax on the beach or in a hammock and in the evening enjoy an incredible live show. Plus of course, there’s an abundance of food and drink options.

If what you’re looking for is a well-rounded experience that gives you a taste of all that this beautiful region of Mexico has to offer then you will not be disappointed in Xcaret. It’s a place for all ages and activity levels and is perfect for families, couples and groups of friends with similar or diverse interests.

However, if you are looking for a little less culture and more adventure check out Xplor Park for a day of adrenaline-pumping fun.

If your desire is to spend the day exploring a beautiful undersea world and enjoy all-inclusive food and drink then Xel-Ha may be more to your liking. We have a similar review of Xel-Ha if you are considering a visit.

If you are having a difficult time deciding between Xel Ha and Xcaret this comparison article will be of some help.

There are also several other Experiencias Xcaret Parks offering a variety of fun adventures and experiences so if you have decided that Xcaret is not for you there is bound to be a park that is.

What is the Best Time to Visit Xcaret? Here’s What to Know to Not Have Your Vacation Ruined

Knowing the best time to visit Xcaret is key to having a perfect vacation, so I put together the ultimate guide with everything you need to know to time your visit right.

Xcaret is one of the most popular eco-theme parks in Mexico, located just south of Playa del Carmen on the Riviera Maya.

With its beautiful natural attractions like underground rivers, beaches, and wildlife, it’s a top destination for travelers looking to experience the natural beauty and culture of the Yucatan Peninsula.

However, the weather and crowds can vary significantly depending on when you visit.

In this post, we’ll explore the best time to visit Xcaret to enjoy the attractions without massive crowds while also having ideal weather conditions.

Best Time to Visit Xcaret (General Info on Seasons)

Weather considerations, peak vs off-peak seasons, best time to visit xcaret: monthly breakdown, january to march, april to june, july to september, october to december, best time to visit xcaret for special events and festivals, xcaret mexico espectacular, festival of life and death traditions, xcaret’s eco-park celebration, tl,dr: what is the best time to visit xcaret, planning your visit to xcaret, hours of operation, ticket prices, how to get to xcaret, public transport, book a transfer, best things to do in xcaret, swimming in underground rivers, cultural shows and exhibitions, wildlife encounters, faqs about the best time to visit xcaret, what is the best time to visit xcaret to avoid crowds, what are the peak seasons to avoid at xcaret, how far in advance should i purchase tickets to xcaret for the best deal, are there any benefits to staying at the hotel xcaret for park access, can you experience all of xcaret in one day, or should you plan for more, are package deals for xcaret worth considering for a budget-friendly trip, best time to visit xcaret: conclusion.

When planning your visit to Xcaret, it’s essential to consider the weather.

The region experiences a tropical climate, with warm temperatures and high humidity throughout the year.

The year is divided into two main seasons:

Dry season (November to April): This is the most pleasant time of year to visit Xcaret, with temperatures generally ranging from 75°F to 85°F (24°C to 29°C) and lower humidity.

There is a reduced likelihood of rain during these months.

Wet season (May to October): This is the hotter and more humid season with temperatures ranging from 80°F to 90°F (27°C to 32°C).

Rain is more frequent and heavy during this period, especially from June to September.

Another key factor to consider when choosing the best time to visit Xcaret is the tourist season.

The park sees a higher volume of visitors during certain times of the year, impacting how crowded it can be:

Peak season: December to April is generally considered the peak tourist season when most people visit Xcaret.

Large crowds, higher prices, and limited availability of accommodations are common during this period, especially around holidays like Christmas and Easter.

Off-peak season: Visiting Xcaret during the off-peak season (May to November) can have its benefits.

Though the weather is more humid and rainy, you’ll find fewer crowds, lower prices, and better availability of accommodations.

This time is the best time to visit Xcaret if you’re looking to save money or enjoy a more relaxed atmosphere at the park.

In summary, the best time to visit Xcaret largely depends on your weather preferences and your tolerance for crowds.

The dry, peak season offers better weather but comes with bigger crowds, while the wet, off-peak season provides a more budget-friendly and relaxed experience with a trade-off for increased rain and humidity.

During these months, Xcaret experiences mild weather with average temperatures of around 75°F (24°C).

This is a great time to enjoy the park’s outdoor attractions, but keep in mind it can get a bit crowded due to the winter holiday travelers.

  • Pros : Nice weather, festive atmosphere
  • Cons : Crowded, higher prices

As spring starts to roll in, the temperatures in Xcaret begin to rise, averaging around 82°F (28°C).

This period is particularly remarkable for its fewer crowds and moderate pricing, so it’s considered the best time to visit Xcaret for budget travelers who don’t mind a bit of rain.

  • Pros : Warm weather, less crowded
  • Cons: Occasional rain showers, start of the hotter season

Summer months bring intense heat and humidity to Xcaret, with temperatures averaging 86°F (30°C).

This can make it challenging to fully enjoy outdoor activities. To beat the heat, plan on going earlier in the day or later in the afternoon.

On the plus side, you can snag some deals on accommodations and park entrance fees.

  • Pros : Deals and discounts, fewer crowds
  • Cons : Very hot and humid, occasional storms

With temperatures cooling down again, hovering around 77°F (25°C), Xcaret becomes a pleasant place to visit in the fall.

However, it’s crucial to note that this period also coincides with the hurricane season in the region, which usually runs from June to November.

  • Pros : Pleasant temperatures, fewer crowds
  • Cons : Chance of hurricanes or tropical storms, occasional rainfall

Xcaret Mexico Espectacular is a show you don’t want to miss when visiting Xcaret.

This event takes place year-round, every evening starting around 6 PM.

The best time to visit Xcaret to see it would be in the cooler months like December through February when evenings are a bit more cool and comfortable.

You can enjoy this fantastic showcase of Mexican culture, history, and traditions, featuring over 300 artists on stage.

If you’re looking to dive into Mexican culture, you should plan your visit around the Festival of Life and Death Traditions.

This celebration occurs from October 30th to November 2nd annually, coinciding with Mexcio’s famous Day of the Dead.

The festival features a variety of activities, including:

  • Traditional workshops
  • Day of the Dead symbols
  • Regional cuisine tastings
  • Altar exhibitions
  • Theatrical performances
  • Live music and dancing

Visiting Xcaret during this time allows you to fully immerse yourself in the rich and colorful Mexican traditions.

It’s definitely the best time to visit Xcaret if you want to experience Day of the Dead in a really unique way

Tip: You can also check out Day of the Dead in Mexico City ).

If you’re an Earth-conscious traveler, the best time to visit Xcaret is doring the park’s Eco-Park Celebration.

This annual event typically takes place in June, aligning with World Environment Day.

The celebration highlights the importance of sustainability, environmental education, and conservation efforts.

During this time, you can participate in activities such as:

  • Waste management workshops
  • Tree planting
  • Educational seminars

When considering the best time to visit Xcaret, you’ll want to take into account factors such as the weather, crowds, and events.

Generally, the optimal time to visit is during the low season, which runs from April to June and September to November.

During these months, you’ll experience pleasant weather, fewer crowds, and lower prices.

On the other hand, the high season for Xcaret is from December to March, where you may face more crowds, higher prices, and a busier atmosphere due to school vacations and holidays.

If you come during this time, be prepared to spend extra time waiting in lines for attractions and booking accommodations in advance.

Another important aspect to consider is the weather.

Xcaret experiences a tropical climate, meaning it’s warm year-round.

However, the region’s rainy season typically falls between June to October, which may cause some outdoor activities and attractions to be affected by occasional downpours.

As for events, Xcaret offers various exciting events and cultural experiences throughout the year.

Some popular events include the Sac Ha Festival in May, the Day of the Dead celebrations in October, and the Life and Death Festival held on November 1st and 2nd.

To sum up, for a more relaxed and budget-friendly experience, pick the low season months of April to June or September to November as the best time to visit Xcaret.

Just keep in mind the possibility of rain during the rainy season and plan accordingly.

Now that you’ve chosen the best time to visit Xcaret for you, here’s a little bit more info about the park!

Xcaret is open 365 days a year, giving you plenty of flexibility in planning your trip.

The park’s hours of operation are from 8:30 AM to 10:30 PM , which means you can enjoy a full day exploring the various activities, shows, and attractions that Xcaret has to offer.

There are various ticket options available to suit your needs and preferences.

Here’s a quick breakdown of the main ticket types:

  • Xcaret Basic Admission : This ticket grants you access to more than 50 attractions throughout the park. Book your ticket here.
  • Xcaret Plus Admission : In addition to the Basic Admission offerings, this ticket includes extra perks like a buffet lunch, snorkel gear rental, and private locker rooms, to name a few! You can book your ticket here (it includes private transfer to and from Cancun, so it will save you lots of headaches).
  • Arrive Early : To make the most of your day at Xcaret, plan to arrive early, especially during peak seasons. This gives you ample time to explore the park at a leisurely pace.
  • Wear Comfortable Clothes : Xcaret features a mix of water and land-based activities, so it’s best to dress accordingly. Light, quick-drying clothing, swimsuits, and water shoes are recommended.
  • Bring Sun Protection : The sun can be intense, so don’t forget to bring sunscreen, hats, and sunglasses for your protection.
  • Stay Hydrated : It’s essential to drink plenty of water throughout the day. Many water stations are available throughout the park, so you can easily refill your reusable water bottles.

Many people rent a car so they can move around. You can do so at Cancun or Tulum international airports.

Infrequent public buses do run between Playa del Carmen and Puerto Aventuras where you can get another bus or taxi to Xcaret. More time-consuming than other options.

This is the option I personally recommend in order to save time and stress!

What I recommend is booking an all-inclusive tour that includes your entry ticket as well as round-trip transportation. This is the one I personally recommend.

One of the must-do activities in Xcaret is taking a dip in the beautiful underground rivers.

These natural wonders, surrounded by lush foliage and limestone cliffs, offer a refreshing break from the heat.

Don’t forget your snorkel gear to explore the underwater caves and admire the colorful fish.

It’s not every day that you get to swim through an ancient, eco-friendly oasis!

Immerse yourself in Mexico’s rich cultural heritage with the various shows and exhibitions at Xcaret.

Be sure to catch the famous Xcaret México Espectacular performance, showcasing traditional dances and music from across the country.

Don’t miss the Papantla Flyers, an ancient ritual where dancers twirl gracefully from a tall pole.

Between shows, explore the Mayan Village for an insight into indigenous culture.

For animal lovers, Xcaret offers unforgettable encounters with a diverse range of wildlife.

During your visit, you can interact with playful dolphins, sea turtles, and stingrays at various spots throughout the park.

The butterfly pavilion, home to dozens of colorful winged residents, creates a beautiful kaleidoscope effect as they flutter around you.

Stroll through the fascinating manatee lagoon and admire these gentle giants in their natural habitat.

The best time to visit Xcaret to avoid crowds is during September and October. This is when schools are in session, and it’s also the rainy season.

You can enjoy fewer crowds and still have plenty of fun, just pack a rain poncho and expect occasional showers.

The peak seasons to avoid at Xcaret are the holiday months of December and January, as well as spring break (usually in March).

If you want to avoid larger crowds, try to visit during weekday mornings or later in the evening when it’s less busy.

To get the best deal on Xcaret tickets, it’s recommended to purchase them at least a month in advance.

This gives you time to look for discounts and promotions and ensures that you have the best availability for activities and shows.

Yes, staying at the Hotel Xcaret comes with several benefits for park access.

Guests enjoy unlimited access to all the Xcaret parks and tours, as well as free transportation between the hotel and the parks.

You’ll also have the convenience of an on-site concierge for park activity recommendations and reservations.

While it’s technically possible to rush through Xcaret’s attractions in one day, you’ll enjoy your visit more if you plan for two or more days.

This will give you enough time to experience the different activities, relax on the beach, and take in the cultural shows without feeling rushed.

Package deals can be worth considering if you plan on visiting multiple Xcaret parks or participating in several tours.

Many packages offer discounted prices for combined experiences, and you can often find promotions that include accommodations and meals, which can save you money overall during your trip.

Xcaret is one of the top attractions on the Riviera Maya for its beautiful natural settings and cultural experiences.

The underground rivers, beaches, wildlife, and live shows immerse visitors in the heritage of the Yucatan Peninsula.

Whether you come during high or low season, Xcaret offers a memorable glimpse into the area’s environment and traditions.

The best things to do at Xcaret Park Mexico

shows people snorkelling in the lagoon at Xcaret park

Hello and welcome to our guide on the best things to see and do at Xcaret park, Mexico! We visited Xcaret during our stay in Riviera Maya and were blown away by the number of activities on offer. You could spend days here and not get bored!

Depending on how long you’re planning on visiting the park for, you may not have enough time to see absolutely everything, so we’ve made things a bit easier by highlighting the things you simply cannot miss. From cultural experiences in a realistic Mayan village to the colourful tropical birds at the aviary, we cover the attractions that are highly rated by everyone that visits. We’ve also included a few personal favourites.

Read on for a list of the best things to do at Xcaret Park that you can’t miss off your list. Once you’ve seen these, you have plenty of free time to check out everything else on offer. 😊

Underground Rivers

The first stop on our list of the best things to see and do at Xcaret park is to float through one of the three underground rivers (Blue River, Mayan River, and the Manatee River). Each of the underground rivers offers a unique and relaxing experience, where you’ll swim through a maze of caves and tunnels. Admire stunning rock formations, waterfalls and tropical jungle scenery as you float along the lazy river… This is widely regarded as the best thing to do at Xcaret Park so arrive early to beat the crowds!

  • The underground rivers will each take approximately one hour to swim through from beginning to end. They all have various stop off points, for those who want to take a break or get out and finish the underground river earlier.
  • You’ll need to pick up your life jacket before entering the underground river and drop these off at the station when you’ve finished.
  • Keep an eye out for the various photo spots along the river where you can scan your photo-pass wrist band.

Bridge to Paradise (Mexican cemetery)

A large part of Mexican culture is celebrating the lives of the dead, usually through lots of colour, decorations and positive energy. Day of the dead, or día de los Muertos in Spanish, is a time where everyone gets together on the 2 nd of November to remember lost ancestors. Girls dress up in colourful dresses, and the guys get suited and booted with floral detailing and skeleton-painted faces.

The bridge to paradise, also known as the Mexican cemetery, gives you an idea of what a real life cemetery might look like in Mexico. It’s incredibly colourful and it’s like nothing you’ve ever seen before.  In addition to this, if you visit the park around November, then you’ll definitely see lots of día de los Muertos activities and events happening in the park! Don’t miss the underground crypts, which are lit up with hundreds of candles.

The Mayan Village

If you’re looking to get a real taste of what Mexican culture is really like, then the Mayan Village at Xcaret park has it all. This diverse village area is proudly showcases Mayan culture, arts, food and activities. Whilst exploring the Mayan village, you’ll have the opportunity to see a show that takes place on an evening, which you simply can’t miss.

For those of you who are looking to get first-hand experience of what it’s like to be a true Mayan for the day, you can have a look around the quaint villages and take part in some of the workshops they have available, such as wood carving and embroidery. We personally loved the architecture of the village.

Aviary: Sanctuary of Birds

The next stop you’ll want to take at Xcaret, and the most impressive part of the park in our opinion, is the vibrant aviary. If you’re a lover of birds and fancy seeing them roam freely in the park, then it’s not to be missed. The aviary boasts hundreds of species of birds, from slightly cheeky and loud parrots, to the majestic bright-beaked toucan. How about seeing some forever hungry vultures? The interior of the aviary is occupied by a huge waterfall. It really makes you feel like you’re in the middle of the amazon jungle and the surround scenery will blow you away!

It’ll take you around 30-40 minutes to explore the entire aviary, depending on how many stops you take along the way. There are some excellent photo spots amongst the waterfalls and birds, with the ground floor waterfall being a prime photo backdrop.

P.s. Don’t miss the toucan! We were incredibly fortunate to see the king of birds when we visited. He was parked up on a branch having his afternoon snack.

Natural pools

Next up on our list of the best things to see and do at Xcaret park is the natural pools. After exploring the park in the morning, you’ll want to relax for a bit and soak up the Mexican sunshine before continuing on with your day. Xcaret is home to a number of freshwater pools that are located on the seafront, right next to the snorkelling lagoon.

The freshwater pools are generally a little quieter than the main beach area of the park and are a good place to relax. There are 2 freshwater pools, with one of them having a water slide. Adults can kick back on the hammocks with a drink whilst the kids have fun splashing about in the water. Lifeguards are on standby just in case. When we visited, this area of Xcaret was very quiet, providing a welcome retreat from the busy attractions.

The snorkelling lagoon / inlet

The snorkelling section at Xcaret park is an absolute must see attraction, especially for those underwater explorers out there. The snorkelling pool is home to some amazing tropical fish that you’ll see swimming beside you as you venture under water. To enjoy this activity, you’ll need to wear a life jacket. If you haven’t brought your own snorkelling gear, you can rent them from the equipment booth right next to the lagoon for a small fee. Snorkelling equipment is free for Xcaret Plus Admission ticket holders.

  • The snorkelling area can get very busy, especially during the afternoon. Therefore, we recommend arriving in the morning to avoid the crowds. Heading here straight after exploring the underground river is your best chance to beat the crowds.
  • Don’t forget to bring a pair of water shoes, as the rocks and the steps to get into the pools are quite slippery.

Image showing people in the water snorkeling at Xcaret park

Coral Reef Aquarium

Whilst we’re on the topic of sea life, you must pay a visit to Xcaret’s Coral Reef aquarium. It’s home to some stunning tropical fish in their hundreds. You’ll be able to get up close and personal as you explore the dimly lit aquarium floor, marvelling at everything from jellyfish and eels to vibrant clown fish. You’ll see species of fish that you didn’t even know existed!

After exploring the indoor section of the aquarium, you can head outside to the highlight of the aquarium attraction… You’ll encounter many baby turtles swimming around in their little pools waiting to be fed, so if you didn’t get the chance to see some sea turtles at your resort’s beach, then you needn’t worry! There’s also several giant sea turtles swimming happily up and down the river. We have never seen anything like it and were truly amazed by their size!

Xcaret’s aquarium isn’t just any standard aquarium and you’ll be glad you paid it a visit.

Image of tropical fish in the water tank at Xcaret aquarium

Ceremony of The Voladores

We’re almost coming to the end of our guide on the best things to see and do at Xcaret park. Before we finish, we can’t forget about the tantalising and extremely tense ceremony, Dance of the Flyers, otherwise known as, ‘Danza de los Voladores’ in Spanish. This traditional Mayan performance is an ancient ceremony that’s said to ask the gods to end a severe draught.

Located near the Xcaret Plus area of the park, the ceremony takes place at an outdoor theatre where you’ll have the chance to get sit and comfortable for the show. The ‘Voldadores’ climb up a pole that’s 30 metres in height, with four out of the five participants tying their feet to the pole itself. They’ll then hang and swing in mid-air, whilst the other plays a traditional Mexican instrument. It’s a fantastic show to witness and will definitely have you on the edge of your seat!

The best optional paid activities at Xcaret Park:

Whilst most attractions at Xcaret Park are free, there are several optional activities that you can pay an additional cost for. There’s no way you can do them all, so we’ve hand selected some of the best.

Xcaret Mexico Espectacular evening dinner show

One of the top things to do at Xcaret park in the evening, after a long day of exploring the park, is to watch Xcaret’a Mexico Espectacular show. It’ll give you a true taste of the rich Mexican culture and is filled with pre-Hispanic dances, horse exhibitions and drummers, amongst many other performances. Be prepared for lots of face paint, colourful costumes and vibrant Mexican music!

The show is included as part of the standard Xcaret Park admission ticket. However, if you’re looking to make enjoy your evening to the fullest, you can also dine at the show, going all out with a 7-course meal as you watch the spectacular show. It’s well worth the additional cost! Tickets are limited so be sure to book the dinner show as soon as you arrive at the park, or online the day before.

Snuba Underwater Adventure

The final activity on our list of the best things to see and do in Xcaret park is for all you explorers out there who thrive off adventure. Snuba is an activity you may have seen before in other destinations. It’s a combination of both snorkelling and diving that provides you with a comfortable and secure experience under water. It’s a great choice for experienced adventurers, but also beginners, as there are qualified instructors to help and support you. Spend just over an hour walking across the floor of the huge aquarium pool, looking up at an array of tropical sea life. It’s immersive for all ages and a cool thing to do if you haven’t experienced it before.

We recommend booking in for the early morning slot if possible, as it’ll give you a better chance of seeing more fish, and perhaps some sea turtles! As the activity takes just over an hour, you’ll have plenty of time to see the park afterwards.

For a full list of all attractions at Xcaret Park and a map of the different attraction routes, check out the official Xcaret website here .

We made it! We hope you enjoyed reading through our list of the best things to see at Xcaret park. We know opinions are subjective, but we personally loved these attractions and they’re highly regarded by everyone we’ve talked to. If you think we’ve missed any attractions off our list, then please let us know in the comments section below, as I’m sure we’ll be back for some more Xcaret fun in the future!

Copy my trip: Hotel Xcaret México in Playa del Carmen

Melissa Yeager

Lonely Planet editor Melissa Yeager swimming in the river surrounding the resort at Hotel Xcaret México in Playa del Carmen.

Lonely Planet editor Melissa Yeager floating the river surrounding the Hotel Xcaret México resort in Playa del Carmen © Melissa Yeager / Lonely Planet

Lonely Planet destination editor Melissa Yeager recently traveled to Playa del Carmen to take in the relaxing natural beauty of one of its ecoresorts. Here, she shares some tips and insights for anyone planning a similar trip.

Inevitably there are destinations and hotels you come across that you immediately think, in the words of Liz Lemon: “I want to go to there.”

That feeling washed over me when I first saw the images of the Hotel Xcaret swirling on social media several years ago. I combed through dozens of prospective dates, but it was booked solid and I had to let the dream of swimming through the turquoise waters of Xcaret’s stalactite-gilded underground rivers drift from my mind.

The first Xcaret (pronounced Ish-cah-ret) opened as a natural eco-park in 1990 in Playa del Carmen , a little more than an hour's drive from Cancun International Airport. Architect Miguel Quintana Pali originally intended to build his dream home on the property, but as he started clearing the land for construction, he discovered cenotes, underground rivers and Mayan ruins on the site. Instead of keeping it for himself, he developed it into Mexico’s first eco-park and a tribute to his country and culture.

xplorriverplayadelcarmenmexicoyeager.jpeg

In recent years, the popular Grupo Xcaret’s portfolio has grown to include five theme parks and three luxury all-inclusive resorts that provide not only all your food, drink and activities on the property but also theme park entrance as well.

So when Xcaret invited me to check out the property, it was an immediate yes. But I wondered: would it live up to the hype? Would the theme parks be natural wonders or “Disney-fied” versions of the real thing?  Here’s what I experienced.

Where did you stay? What was the vibe?

I stayed in the original Hotel Xcaret México resort – the largest of the properties with 900 rooms sprawled over five buildings, all recessed delicately among the lush river and beachfront landscape.

xcaretriverroomplayadelcarmenyeager.jpeg

With that many rooms, you would think the resort would feel crowded. And it does in the lobby, where you get a sense of just how many people are staying at this resort. However, the frenetic movement of people checking in and baggage delivery is confined to that area.  Once you enter the stunning greenery and waterways of the resort,  you often forget that this is a large place. It has a chic atmosphere and plenty of quiet places to relax.

chapelhotelxcaretplayadelcarmenyeager.jpeg

The resort tries to match its guests to appropriate rooms by looking at the ages of people staying in the room. Often, they’ll group families with smaller children near each other and in places with activities suitable for those ages (there’s a wading pool with a nearby kid-friendly buffet and a bar with a view of the pool for parents).  Meanwhile, they have an adults-only building (along with their adults-only property Hotel Xcaret Arte) with an exclusive rooftop pool boasting a bar and an Instagram-worthy clear tunnel to swim through.

Xcaret is a luxury, five-diamond resort with a price tag to match, ranging from US$650-1000 a night. But, before sticker shock sets in,  I’d encourage you to do some math here to see if it is within your budget. Entrance fees for the parks and all activities on the resort (paddleboarding, kayaking, floating the river) are included along with your food, beverages (including alcohol), room service and transit to/from the airport.

Best thing you ate?

cantinahotelxcaretplayadelcarmenyeager.jpeg

The food at the resort is all-inclusive, and there are 35 restaurants available ranging from carts in multiple locations replicating Mexico’s beloved street food scene to a Mercado with handmade, fresh tortillas.

But one restaurant in particular stood out – HA' (Maya for water). A creation of chef Carlos Gaytán, its seven-course tasting menu is newly minted with a Michelin star and is open to the public. The upcharge required to dine here is one of the few you'll encounter in the resort.

escamoleshahotelxcaretyeager.jpg

It costs US$150, but if you love fine dining and wine, it’s an incredible experience considering the price point. Every round – the Wagyu, the Beignet, the Filet Mignon – is a culinary delight. However, the standout on the menu for me was the escamoles (insect caviar). Well-seasoned and tasty, it's unique to this destination and a great introduction to insects if you've never tried them before.

xplorstalactiteplayadelcarmenmexicoyeager.jpeg

What was your favorite experience on the trip?

By far the rivers around the resort and in the Xplor park. It was the most tranquil experience. Suit up in a life jacket (and helmet at Xplor) and float. In Xplor, I loved the serenity of floating in the turquoise, transparent waters while admiring the stalactites decorating the ceiling overhead. The river was outdoors at the resort and floating was a great way to cool off on a hot afternoon and notice little details – a waterfall, a waterslide, hammocks in caves. It was a truly enchanting experience.

xoximilco1playadelcarmenmexicoyeager.jpeg

What was the most touristy thing you did?

Xoximilco. That’s not a typo. The “ch” has been replaced by the Xcaret “X” and yes, the evening, party-atmosphere boat float is inspired by the real floating gardens of Xochimilco, the UNESCO World Heritage site in Mexico City.  The park does not try to be the same as the real Xochimilco (how could it be?) but aims to replicate the cultural and communal spirit of the original.

Having experienced both, I think the Xoximilco experience gives that same vibe of heading out on the trajineras (gondolas) for a day of celebration, but these are tailored to a luxury guest experience with much fancier vessels than the ones in CDMX – think coolers filled with beer, sodas and premixed cocktails and a three-course meal as well as the boat being cleaned between stops. Still, the experience replicates the warmth of community, music and dancing that makes the original such a memorable occasion.

The boats float to different stations hosting Mariachi and traditional Mexican music, while your guide encourages you to dance, eat and drink. If you're traveling as a group, it would be a great way to kick off the trip.

What is the one thing that you did not expect?

So many joyful moments of sweet surprises dotted around the resort and parks. In the lobby, there’s a cart with popsicles. While floating in the river surrounding the resort, we discovered caves with hammocks and a hidden water slide. Relaxing at the pool, suddenly a band playing the xylophone appeared. In the Xenses theme park, we emerged from one of the attractions to discover a lemon tree where you could get a small cup of crisp, cool limonada to enjoy. These delights are spread around the resort like confetti, so make sure to keep your eyes open.

bridgeriverxcaretplayadelcarmenyeager.jpeg

What was the handiest thing you packed?

Water shoes, an SPF shirt and a waterproof case for my phone. All came in useful multiple times. The SPF shirt freed me from having to endlessly reapply sunscreen while in the park.

My packing regret is not bringing some fast-drying shorts to wear at the theme parks. You’re moving from water slides and underground rivers to zip lines, and wearing shorts instead of swimsuit bottoms would have been much more comfortable.

Best tip for someone who wants to plan the same trip?

I have a few to share. First, book in advance. The property is proud of its high occupancy rates so plan ahead to get the dates you want.

Second, make your reservations for the spa and specialty restaurants early, as these fill up. Don’t worry, there are plenty of spots to eat, but if you want to get into one of the specialty places, think ahead.

Finally, take advantage of all the selfie cameras positioned around the resort. Scan your bracelet and the prepositioned camera will snap your photo. Then, when you go to your room at the end of the night, turn on the TV and the resort has a channel where you can view your photos. Grab a glass of wine and laugh with your travel companions at all your silly snapshots from the day.

Melissa stayed at Hotel Xcaret México and visited the related parks on an invitation from the resort. Lonely Planet does not accept freebies in exchange for positive reviews.
