Golden visas allow residents to change jobs more easily and spend periods of time out of work without having to worry about their legal status in the country

The National author image

Hundreds of thousands of UAE residents have been awarded a golden visa since the scheme was first introduced in 2019.

The 10-year residency permits are given to people who have made an outstanding contribution to the country, have highly prized skills or work in key industries that are crucial to economic growth.

In Dubai, the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs said in November that more than 150,000 golden visas were issued in the emirate.

Golden visas have been granted to a variety of people, including outstanding pupils and students who earned top marks in their final-year exams and health workers who served on the front line during the Covid-19 pandemic.

Numerous global celebrities and stalwarts of the business community have also been awarded golden visas.

The process involved in applying for a golden visa is different from applying for a normal residency permit. The National explains how.

What are golden visas?

Golden visas are designed to enable foreigners to live, work and study in the UAE without the need for a national sponsor and with 100 per cent ownership of their business on the UAE mainland.

These visas are issued for 10 years and as long as the recipient continues to meet the conditions of the visa, they can renew for a further decade when it is due to expire.

Normal expatriate workers must renew their visas every two to three years.

Golden visas are different to Emirati citizenship , which can be granted only to people nominated by the government or royal court officials.

Who can get a golden visa?

Golden visas can be granted to investors, entrepreneurs, people with special talents, researchers in various fields of science and knowledge, and bright students with promising scientific capabilities.

Sometimes people are nominated for golden visas by senior Emiratis or government bodies, and in other circumstances, people apply online.

People investing Dh1 million to Dh2 million in property also have several options.

If a person is awarded a golden visa, then their spouse and children can also apply.

How do the authorities decide who is eligible for a golden visa?

The following categories of people are entitled to apply for a 10-year residence visa in the UAE.

1. People with public investments of at least Dh10 million. The investment may take many forms, such as:

  • A deposit of at least Dh10m in an investment fund inside the country
  • Establishing a company in the UAE with a capital of not less than Dh10m
  • Partnering in an existing or new company with a share value of not less than Dh10m
  • Having a total investment of not less than Dh10m in all areas mentioned, on condition that the investment in sectors other than real estate is not less than 60 per cent of the total investment.

The golden visa includes the spouse and children of the holder, as well as one executive director and one adviser. It can also be extended to include business partners, on the condition that each partner contributes Dh10m.

2. People with special talents

This includes people in the fields of science and knowledge, such as doctors, specialists, scientists and inventors, as well as creative people in the fields of culture and art.

If you hold a doctorate or a patent, you are eligible, but there are other conditions regarding how the specialised talents are defined, as outlined on the UAE's government portal .

All categories of applicants are also required to have a valid employment contract in a specialised field of priority in the UAE.

How do you apply for a golden visa?

Applicants need to register their interest on the UAE's Federal Authority for Identity and Citizenship (ICA) website.

There is a special area for golden visa services.

If you are from one of the eligible categories but have not yet been nominated, then you should apply via the box labelled "Visa - Golden Visa - Nomination Request For Golden Residence - New Request".

visit dubai golden visa

There is an online form which requests your personal details, plus the category under which you believe you can be nominated.

You will also need your Unified Identification Number (UID) - a six-digit number automatically assigned to anyone who enters the UAE.

Dubai's General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs has also set up a new team to handle applications for golden visas and other important people.

Called "You are Special", the service can be accessed 24-7 online or by calling 800 5111.

How do exceptional pupils or graduates apply?

The Golden Residency is granted to outstanding pupils who have obtained an average rate of at least 95 per cent in the high school certificate from public or private schools; and to university students from inside or outside the country who have a cumulative GPA of no less than 3.75, or its equivalent in specific scientific disciplines.

The visa includes the students' families.

Applications for Golden Residency are submitted through the Emirates Schools Establishment.

How long does the nomination process take?

Within 30 days you will receive an email notifying you of the outcome of your application to be nominated.

Once your nomination has been approved, you will receive an emailed link to upload the required documents for the visa.

Within weeks of uploading your documents, your application will be verified by the Federal Authority for Identity and Citizenship, and you will receive your visa.

If you are currently residing within the UAE, you will be given a temporary one-month visa and will be required to convert your temporary visa into a residency permit during this period.

What if I am applying from outside the UAE?

If you currently live outside of the UAE, you will be given a six-month visa to enter the country, explore its opportunities, and settle.

To apply for this multi-entry visa, you need to fill in an online form. There is one for investors , and one for entrepreneurs and outstanding students . It costs Dh1,150.

The six-month visa for talented people is only single entry.

During this period, you will be required to convert your temporary visa into a residency permit.

Does my golden visa qualify me to work in the UAE?

To work in the UAE, you need to have a valid employment contract, work permit or a licence.

However, the UAE's Ministry of Human Resources and Emiratisation has started to issue work permits for golden residency holders.

These are required by those who were unemployed when they received their golden visa and wish to start working for a specific employer, and by those who plan to start a new job with a new employer.

Individuals who meet the qualifying criteria and wish to obtain a Golden Residency permit in the United Arab Emirates can easily submit their applications through the relevant government authorities and various available channels, electronically or in person.

The authorized service channels include the official website of the Federal Authority for Identity and Citizenship, Customs, and Ports Security, as well as the UAE Identity and Citizenship Phone Application (UAEICP), Customer Happiness Centers, and approved typing offices authorized by the Federal Authority for Identity and Citizenship in the UAE.

Those interested in obtaining Dubai Golden Visa can apply through the official website of the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs in Dubai. Eligible individuals can also submit their applications through the Abu Dhabi Residents Office, which issues the Abu Dhabi Golden Visa.

The application process may vary depending on the application category, the location of submission, and whether the application is submitted in person or online. However, in general, most applicants will need to follow these basic steps:

  • Access a service provider: Access the website or mobile application of one of the service providers or visit a personal submission center, such as Customer Happiness Centers or typing offices.
  • Complete the application form: Fill out the application form for obtaining a Golden Residency or the Golden Visa Nomination, completing all required information.
  • Submit the required documents: The required documents for the Golden Residency will vary depending on the category through which the application is submitted and the case's complexity.
  • Pay the service fees: The fee amount may vary based on the information provided in the application.
  • Submit the completed application: Once the Golden Visa application is completed and submitted, applicants will receive a tracking number that will allow applicants to monitor the status of their requests.

Typically, the processing time for Golden Residency applications ranges from two (2) to seven (7) working days but may take longer depending on the complexity of the application.

Before following the steps mentioned above, applicants from outside the UAE should apply for an entry permit. By obtaining this entry permit, they can travel to the UAE to complete the Golden Residency application procedures within the country. If approved, they will be granted a multiple-entry visa valid for a six-month stay, allowing them to proceed with their UAE Golden Visa application procedures within the UAE.

While some eligible categories, like public investors, real estate investors, and entrepreneurs, have additional specific investment requirements for Golden Residency, all applicants for the UAE Golden Residency are also required to pay the relevant fees.

Below is a breakdown of the fees required for the Golden Visa application:

  • Request fees: AED 100

Golden Residency permits in the United Arab Emirates are issued either for 5 years or 10 years. They can be renewed for the same duration, provided the requirements and conditions for the Golden Residency visa are maintained for the duration of the residency.

The issued duration of residency (5 or 10 years) will depend on the application category and the issuing authority of the Golden Residency. For example, real estate investors are granted a renewable five-year Golden Residency, while investors in public investments are granted a renewable 10-year Golden Residency. Similarly, high school graduates usually receive a five-year Golden Residency, while university graduates are granted a 10-year Golden Residency.

It should be noted that the Abu Dhabi Residents Office recently announced that the duration of Golden Residency for all categories, without exception, has been fixed at 10 years. Therefore, all Golden Residency visas issued by Abu Dhabi will be valid for 10 years, regardless of the category.

Furthermore, according to recent amendments to the UAE's Golden Residency program, investors will not be subject to any minimum residency requirements. Instead, they will be permitted to stay abroad for any duration while still receiving all the benefits of UAE residency by investment.

The UAE's Golden Residency program offers successful applicants long-term residence permits, which are available for either 5 or 10 years. It also offers more advantages than those granted to standard residents but fewer than Golden Residents. A Standard Work Residency is a basic short-term residency, typically requiring renewal every two (2) or three (3) years. Applicants must have a valid employment contract with an employer in the UAE.

You can check whether you are eligible for Golden Residency in the UAE through the website of the Federal Authority for Identity and Citizenship and Customs and Port Security. You can also refer to the details of the eligible categories and the conditions required for each category on our website.

Most of the expats residing in the UAE travel frequently due to business and personal reasons, and do not stay in the country all throughout the year. Sometimes, these trips would last longer than six months, thereby affecting the validity of their residence visa.

If a UAE resident has stayed outside the Emirates for more than six months or 180 days, his/her residence visa will be automatically cancelled.

Here's how you can apply for a new entry permit to enter the UAE again:

Stay up to date with the latest news. Follow KT on WhatsApp Channels.

  • Click 'Next'
  • Attach required documents such as passport copy and Emirates ID copy.

GDRFA website

If you're a Dubai resident who has stayed outside the UAE for more than six months, you will not be able to apply for a new entry permit on your own. You will need to ask your sponsor to apply for your entry permit.

Your sponsor has to apply through the following:

  • Register in the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDFRA) website using your email address
  • Log in through username.
  • Click 'Services'.
  • Click 'Issuance of a Residency Visa'.
  • Click 'Visa Issuance for Foreigners linked with Job Contract'.

Your sponsor can also apply for a new entry permit through the Customer happiness centre:

  • Get a ticket using the queue system
  • Submit the application fulfilling all conditions and documents to the customer service representative.
  • Pay service fees (if required).

Requirements

  • The application must be submitted from outside the country.
  • You can apply for this request after 180 days of staying outside the country.
  • You need to provide a valid reason to justify being outside the country for more than 180 days.
  • A fine of Dh100 will be charged for every 30 days or less that you spent outside the country. However, if you're a Dubai resident that has stayed outside the country for more than 180 days, you will only have to start paying for the days after your 180-day grace period is over.
  • The remaining period of your residence visa must be more than 30 days upon submitting the application.
  • If you're sponsored by an establishment, your application can be submitted either by you or by the establishment.
  • Fine fees can only be refunded if your application is rejected.
  • When your application is approved, you must enter the country within 30 days starting from the approval date.

Application fee

The fee for the new permit entry application is Dh200 and can go up to Dh420 if the permit was applied through customer happiness centres such as Amer. It is worth noting that the total amount of the fee may vary depending on your circumstances.

Fine exemption

If you have already exceeded 180 days outside the UAE, but the status of your residency is still showing as 'Active' and it has at least 30 days of validity, you will be exempted from paying the fines.

Check your residency status

While you're travelling, be it for business or pleasure, it is possible that checking the status of your residence visa may slip your mind. It's a good thing you can do it from the convenience of your phone or laptop.

You can check the status of your residency by visiting the ICP website and doing the following:

  • Click 'File Validity' tab.
  • Hit 'Search By' and choose between 'File No.' and 'Passport Information'.
  • Click 'Select the Type' and choose 'Residency'.
  • Hit 'File Type' and choose 'Emirates ID Number'.
  • Fill in your Emirates ID number, nationality, and date of birth.
  • Click 'Search'.

You can also check your residency status by doing the following:

  • Download the "UAEICP" mobile app.
  • Register with a working email if you still don't have an account.
  • Sign in with UAE Pass.
  • Once you're in the app, select the "Sponsored" option from the main page of the app, where you sill see if your visa is still active or not.

Once you're done with the process, you can expect a result of your request for a new entry permit in 48 hours or less.
